[00:00:02]
WELCOME TO TODAY'S ACADEMIC'S TOWN HALL.THE TOPIC TODAY IS THE RECENT ANNOUNCEMENT WITH SPECIFIC FOCUS ON THE FACULTY SUPERVISION STRUCTURE AND THE SCHEDULING TEAM.
BEFORE WE BEGIN, I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE OUR PROVOST DR. FLOYD.
>> THANK YOU FOR JOINING THE TOWN HALL.
I'M EXCITED FOR YOU TO HEAR THE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE.
WE SPENT AN AMOUNT OF TIME VISIONING ON THEIR OWN WITH COLLEAGUES FROM THE REST OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS, WORKFORCE AND ADVANCEMENT AND STUDENT SUCCESS TO ENSURE WE ALIGN OUR STRUCTURES TO BEST SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS NEEDS.
LAST WEEK, WE POSTED POSITIONS FOR THE DEAN OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS.
TODAY'S SESSION WILL PROVIDE MORE DETAIL ON HOW THESE ROLES WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE WILL WORK.
IN TIMES OF SELECTING WHO WILL APPLY FOR THE POSITION, I WILL ENSURE THAT FACULTY WILL BE ENGAGED IN THE PROCESS.
AFTER THE INITIAL SCREENING FOR MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, FACULTY WILL BE ESSENTIAL IN THE SELECTION PROCESS.
DALLAS COLLEGE IS ONLY 4Â MONTHS OLD; IT IS NECESSARY FOR US TO ALIGN THE HIRING PRACTICES WITH THE NEW ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE.
AS WE BEGIN TO FORM SEARCH COMMITTEES, KNOW THAT FACULTY WILL BE ENGAGED BASED ON THEIR SCHOOL AFFILIATION NOT THEIR CAMPUS.
IT IS CRITICAL THAT WE BECOME FOCUS ON OUR ALIGNMENT BY SCHOOL AND DISCIPLINE AND NOT CAMPUS LOCATION.
TO THAT END, THERE WILL BE 7 SEARCH COMMITTEES.
COMPRISED OF TWO TO FOUR FACULTY MEMBERS PER SCHOOL AND EQUAL AMOUNT OF STAFF AND REPRESENTATIVES, THESE COMMITTEES WILL REVIEW THE CANDIDATES EXPRESSION OF INTEREST.
WE ARE EXCITED THAT FACULTY WILL HAVE A MEANINGFUL VOICE IN THIS PROCESS.
YOUR GUYS' PROVOST WILL REACH OUT TO YOU SHORTLY ON HOW FACULTY MEMBERS CAN GET INVOLVED.
IN THE MEANTIME, THE TOWN HALL WILL ADDRESS QUESTIONS ON THE STRUCTURE.
I WILL TURN IT OVER TO ROBERT.
>> THANKS FOR THE WORDS OF WELCOME DR. FLOYD.
WE WILL SPEND THE BULK OF THE TIME TALKING ABOUT REORGANIZATION, THE ROLES OF THE DEANS AND THE CHAIRS AND WE'RE GOING TO BE ANSWERING QUESTIONS THAT WERE SUBMITTED BY FACULTY.
NOW, DR. FLOYD SUBMITTED AN ANNOUNCEMENT A FEW WEEKS AGO WHEN THAT HAPPENED WE WE SELECTED QUESTIONS EARLIER SO THERE WILL NOT BE LIVE QUESTIONS COMING THROUGH THE SWAGIT STREAM SINCE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ASKING THAT ON EMAIL THROUGH THE PROGRAM ON A THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS.
WITH THAT, I WILL TURN IT OVER TO DR. FLOYD TO TALK ABOUT THE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE THAT WE TALKED ABOUT AND THEN WE WILL START WITH THE QUESTIONS.
I AM GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR.
IT IS ENROLLED AND I WILL APOLOGIZE IN ADVANCE AND DR. CROSS IS TRYING TO JOIN US.
I DON'T WANT TO BELIEVE THAT THE SCHOOL MEMBERS BELIEVE THAT HE'S NOT HERE.
WE'RE HAVING TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES.
DEPARTMENT CHAIR TO ENROLL AND WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT IT.
THESE INDIVIDUALS WILL EVALUATE FACULTY, ASSIGN THEM TO COURSES AND SCHEDULE.
PROVIDE MENTORSHIP AND COACHING ROLE.
THIS ROLE WILL BE WITH WE FELT IT WAS IMPORTANT IN CREATING THIS NEW STRUCTURE THAT WE HAVE PEOPLE THAT UNDERSTOOD FACULTY, FORMER FACULTY MEMBERS TO BE ENGAGED WITH THEM AT THIS LEVEL AS THEY'RE PROVIDING SUPPORT FOR THEM THROUGH THE JOURNEY IN DALLAS COLLEGE.
IN THE FUTURE, THIS WILL BE THE ONLY POSITION WITHIN DALLAS COLLEGE.
WE WILL NOT HAVE FACULTY SUPERVISION THROUGH COORDINATORS AND SUPERVISED TIME.
THIS DOES NOT RULE OUT THE POSSIBILITY THAT FACULTY MEMBERS WILL RECEIVE REASSIGNED TIME CASE BY CASE BASIS.
WE WILL GO THROUGH THE HIRING PROCESS IN A BIT MORE DETAIL SHORTLY.
KNOW THAT THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR WILL OVERSEE FACULTY MEMBERS OF A SIMILAR DISCIPLINE OR THEY WILL BE SOMEONE WITH EXPERIENCE ADJACENT TO THAT TEACHING
[00:05:05]
DISCIPLINE.NOW, YOU WILL SEE THE DEPARTMENT CHAIRS REPORT TO THE DEAN OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS WHO REPORTS TO THE VICE PROVOST TO THE RELEVANT SCHOOL.
THE DEAN OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS POSITION IS HIGHLY EXCITING AND STRATEGIC.
IT IS GOING TO LOOK DIFFERENT THAN THE ACADEMIC TEAMS WE HAD IN THE PAST AND THEY WILL SEE THE DEPARTMENT'S CHAIR RESPONSIBLE FOR DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES.
AGAIN, THEY WILL NOT SUPERVISE FACULTY MEMBERS.
THE DEAN'S GOAL IS ORIENTED TOWARDS FURTHERING THE PROGRAM AND THEY WORK WITH EXTERNAL PARTNERS AND THE COMMUNITY.
THEY WILL SUPPORT THE VICE PROVOST IN COORDINATING WITH THE ORGANIZATION IN DALLAS COLLEGE AND WORK WITH TEAM MEMBERS AND PARTNERS AND WORKFORCE AND ADVANCEMENT AND STUDENT SUCCESS.
THE DEAN WILL BE INTERFACING MORE AND MORE WITH THE COMMUNITY.
IN ADDITION TO DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, THE DEANS WILL OVERSEE LATIN MANAGEMENT, GALLERIES AND CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE THAT ARE SPECIFIC TO THE DISCIPLINE.
I WILL TURN IT OVER TO MIKE AND HE WILL TALK ABOUT THE SCHEDULE.
>> GREAT, THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS JOINED US TODAY.
I APPRECIATE THAT YOU HAVE TAKEN THE TIME THIS AFTERNOON TO HEAR THIS INFORMATION.
I'M EXCITED TO TELL YOU ABOUT THE NEW SCHEDULING PROCESS.
AS YOU CAN SEE, ON THE GRAPHIC THAT'S ON THE SCREEN THERE.
WE HAVE ASSEMBLED DEDICATING SCHEDULING TEAM.
EXCITING PART OF THIS SCHEDULING TEAM THAT IS SCHOOL SPECIFIC.
SO EACH OF THE 7 SCHOOLS WILL HAVE A DEDICATED TEAM AND THAT TEAM CONSISTS OF AT LEAST THREE INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE PROCESS.
YOU CAN SEE THE DESCRIPTION OF THOSE JOB FUNCTIONS THERE ON THE SCREEN.
EACH TEAM WILL HAVE SO EACH SCHOOL WILL HAVE A SCHEDULING COORDINATOR WHO WILL WORK WITH THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR TO WORK WITH THE FACULTY TO CREATE THE SCHEDULE AND MAKE THOSE ASSIGNMENTS.
EACH TEAM WILL HAVE A SCHEDULE BUILDER AND SOMEONE WHO IS A CONTRACT SPECIALISTS THAT WILL TAKE CARE OF THE INPUT OF THE SCHEDULE, ROOMS ASSIGNED AND ALSO GENERATE FACULTY CONTRACTS.
THEN, A THIRD MEMBER OF THOSE TEAMS WILL BE SOMEONE WHO TAKES CARE OF DATA ENTRY AND BOOK INPUTTING.
WE ALL KNOW WHAT A CRITICAL PIECE OF THE PICTURE THAT IS.
THEY WILL COORDINATE WITH THE DEPARTMENT CHAIRS AND THE FACULTY TO MANAGE THAT WHOLE BOOK AND LEARNING MATERIALS, ORDERING PROCESS.
THE WHOLE INCLUDE ED AREA IS ALSO INCLUDED IN THIS NEW ACADEMIC SCHEDULING AREA.
WE HAVE A NEW DIRECTOR, NICOLE, WHO IS IN CHARGE OF THAT.
ONE OF THE EXCITING THINGS A COUPLE OF THINGS TO NOTE.
AGAIN, THERE'S ONE PER SCHOOL.
AS YOU ALL KNOW, AS WELL AS I DID, WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT THE DIFFERENT SCHOOLS AND THE DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES THERE'S A LOT OF NUANCES THAT DIFFERENTIATE THE SCHEDULING PROCESS AND THE CREATION OF CONTRACTS.
THOSE THINGS CAN BE VERY SPECIFIC ACCORDING TO DISCIPLINE.
IT IS EXCITING THAT WE DECIDED TO INVEST A TEAM PER SCHOOL.
THE OTHER PART OF THIS TOO, IN NO WAY TAKES AWAY THE HUMAN IMPACT HERE.
WE STILL ARE GOING TO HAVE THIS GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING TO BE WORKING WITH OUR FACULTY.
WE WILL CONTINUE TO EXPRESS THEIR PREFERENCES AND HAVE THOSE CONVERSATIONS WITH THE DEPARTMENT CHAIRS SO ALL OF THE CRITICAL VOICES ARE IN THE ROOM WHEN THIS SCHEDULING IS TAKING PLACE.
I THINK IT IS GOING TO BE A GREAT SYSTEM, A GREAT WAY FOR US TO WORK TOGETHER TO
[00:10:02]
CONTINUE TO PROVIDE REALLY EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE SERVICES FOR OUR STUDENTS.THANK YOU, BOTH FOR THOSE ANSWERS.
I WANT TO TURN TO THE QUESTIONS FROM THE FACULTY.
ONE PLACE, YOU TALKED ABOUT FACULTY PREFERENCES.
WE'RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT SCHEDULING.
WE'RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT CHAIRS AND THAT SORT OF THING.
GOING BACK TO THE SCHEDULING QUESTION.
HOW ARE FACULTY GOING TO SHARE THE QUESTIONS WITH THE SCHEDULING TEAM AND WITH THEIR DEANS, SOMETHING DIRECTLY OR BASE OFF OF PERHAPS WHAT THEY TAUGHT PREVIOUSLY?
IF YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT FACULTY PREFERENCES FOR TEACHING, ROBERT, I THINK THAT'S WHERE WE ARE AT.
FACULTY PREFERENCE SURVEY CONDUCTED EACH TERM PRIOR TO THE SEMESTER.
COLLECT WHAT THE FACULTY WOULD LIKE TO TEACH.
WE WORKED OFF OF ROLLOVER AND WORK ON THE BACK END TO MODIFY THE SCHEDULE ON SHIFTS AND FACULTY MEMBERS LIVES.
WE ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE OUR MIND.
WE WILL TAKE THOSE PREFERENCES IN ADVANCE TO PUT IN SCHEDULE AHEAD OF TIME AND WORK ON THE BACK END THEY SHOULD LOOK AT THOSE BEFORE EACH TERM.
SECOND TO THAT, LET'S TALK ABOUT SPECIFIC COURSES THAT ARE BEING OFFERED.
WE HAD A FACULTY MEMBER WHO ASKED WILL FACULTY BE PERMITTED TO OFFER COURSES OUTSIDE OF SCHEDULING RECOMMENDATION? WE HAVE AN EXAMPLE OF THIS.
FACULTY IS INTERESTED IN OFFERING THAT; WILL THEY BE ABLE TO DO SO?
>> WE ARE MOST INTERESTED IN STUDENT DEMAND AND WHAT THEY'RE LOOKING TO TAKE.
WE ARE ENROLLING STUDENTS TO GET A JOB.
ONE IS THE STUDENT BASE PER COURSE.
OTHER INDICATORS LIKE THE STUDENT PREFERENCE SURVEY, JUST LIKE A PREFERENCE SURVEY ON FACULTY WHAT THEY WANT TO TEACH.
WE WILL BE MONITORING THE STUDENTS ON WHAT COURSES THEY WOULD LIKE TO TAKE.
WE WILL REVIEWING DATA SO WE CAN MAKE DATA INFORMED DECISIONS AND LOOKING AT STUDENT POPULATION ANALYSIS AND ENROLLMENT AND SPECIFIC FIELDS OF STUDY, CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS. ALSO, LIVE INPUTS.
WE HAVE EXCITED AREAS THAT WE CREATED FROM DALLAS COLLEGE.
SO WE WILL BE LOOKING FOR PLACES LIKE THE INCUBATOR TO INFORM THE COURSE SCHEDULE.
LIVE TIMES SO THAT WE CAN BE RESPONSIVE TO NOT ONLY THE STUDENTS NEEDS BUT THE COMMUNITY AND EMPLOYER NEEDS.
THE SCHEDULING PROCESS, OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE FACULTY TO ENGAGE WITH THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR AS WELL AS DEANS AND THEY WILL BE ABLE TO PROVIDE CRUCIAL INPUTS TO THE SCHEDULE AS BEING CREATED.
WHAT'S, FOR INSTANCE, THAT STUDENT ISSUE ARISING NEEDING TO DROP A CLASS THAT IS CROSS LISTED WITH SOMETHING ELSE? A SECTION THAT IS FULL, HOW ARE THOSE GOING TO BE HANDLED?
>> WELL, THINGS LIKE COURSE SUBSTITUTIONS AND ADD/DROP REQUESTS ALL OF THOSE ISSUES ARE GOING TO GO TO WHAT WE CALL A STUDENT SUCCESS DEPARTMENT.
CERTAINLY, WE WANT TO CONTINUE IN THE NEW STRUCTURE TO BE STUDENT CENTRIC AND THIS ALLOWS FOR THAT.
WE HAVE ADVISING TEAMS WHO ARE SET UP AND THEY'RE ALIGNED WITH THE GUIDED PATHWAYS AND OF COURSE THAT MEANS THEY'RE ALIGNED WITH THE SCHOOLS.
THEY'RE GOING TO BE COORDINATED WITH THE SCHEDULING TEAM THAT WILL RESOLVE ISSUES THAT MIGHT COME UP.
CERTAINLY, THE FACULTY WE ALL KNOW THIS.
SOME OF THE THINGS GO TO THE FACULTY AND WE WANT TO MAKE IT AS EASY AS POSSIBLE FOR THE FACULTY TO HAVE A PLACE AND WAY A TO GET THAT NEED STUDENT NEED ALONG TO THIS GROUP.
WE WILL BE TAKING CARE OF THAT PROCESS AS WELL, BUT THEN THIS GROUP IS GOING TO MANAGE.
THE STUDENT SUCCESS GROUP IS GOING TO MANAGE THE ENTIRE PROCESS.
GOING TO DO IT QUICKLY AND EFFECTIVELY THAT THE STUDENT NEEDS ARE TAKEN CARE OF.
AND CERTAINLY, YOU ALL KNOW THIS YOU KNOW THAT WE NEED THE FACULTY TO CONTINUE IN THE ROLE WITH WORKING WITH THE STUDENTS TO WORK THROUGH THEIR PROBLEMS. AS YOU ALL KNOW, BETTER THAN ME, STUDENTS COME TO YOU BEFORE, DURING, AFTER CLASS AS WELL AS DURING OFFICE HOURS.
THERE'S A CONSTANT NEED FOR THE FACULTY TO REMAIN INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS.
SO, OBVIOUSLY, THAT WILL CONTINUE.
WE FEEL WITH THE WAY WE ARE SETTING IT UP IT WILL MAKE THE PROCESS GO SMOOTHLY FOR
[00:15:01]
THE STUDENTS TO MAKE SURE WE CAN CONTINUE TO BE STUDENT CENTRIC IN THAT.LET'S TALK A BIT ABOUT DEPARTMENT CHAIRS.
WHAT DEPARTMENT CHAIRS WILL BE ASSIGNED TO EACH OF THE SCHOOLS?
I'LL TALK ABOUT TWO OF OUR SCHOOLS.
JUST SO I DON'T LEAVE ANYTHING OUT.
I WILL CHEAT A LITTLE BIT AND LOOK AT THE CHART.
SCHOOL OF LAW AND PUBLIC SERVICE THERE ARE ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR, FIVE, SIX DEPARTMENT CHAIRS.
WE HAVE A DEPARTMENT CHAIR WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY.
TWO DEPARTMENT CHAIRS HANDLING THAT AREA.
TWO DEPARTMENTS CHAIRS IN THE DISCIPLINE OF DEPARTMENT.
ALL FOUR DEPARTMENT CHAIRS WILL REPORT TO A DEAN OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS.
THEN, ALSO, WITHIN THE SCHOOL OF LAW WE GOT DEPARTMENT CHAIR WHO HANDLES ANTHROPOLOGY, SOCIOLOGY.
THERE'S ANOTHER DEPARTMENT CHAIR WORKING IN THE DISCIPLINE OF PSYCHOLOGY.
THIRD DEPARTMENT CHAIR WORKING WITH PUBLIC SERVICE AND PHILOSOPHY AND THIS WOULD ALSO, OF COURSE, WILL YOU RELIGION.
THOSE THREE DEPARTMENT CHAIRS REPORT TO A DEAN OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS.
IN THE SCHOOL OF LAW AND PUBLIC SERVICE, THAT'S ONE, TWO, THREE 7 DEPARTMENT CHAIRS IN THAT AREA.
THEN I'M LOOKING AT THE CHEAT SHEET HERE.
IN THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, THERE'S A DEPARTMENT CHAIR RESPONSIBLE FOR ECONOMICS.
THERE ARE TWO DEPARTMENT CHAIRS WHO WILL BE WORKING IN THE AREA OF BUSINESS.
THEN, ANOTHER DEPARTMENT CHAIR OVERSEEING ACCOUNTING.
SO THOSE FOUR DEPARTMENT CHAIRS REPORT TO A DEAN OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS.
AND THEN, ALSO IN THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS WE HAVE A DEPARTMENT CHAIR WHO IS WORKING WITH REAL ESTATE AND MARKETING AND OFFICE SYSTEMS AND I HAVE LEFT YOURS OUT.
I APOLOGIZE THERE'S A FEW IN THERE.
ANOTHER DEPARTMENT CHAIR OVER HOSPITALITY, TOURISM AND IN TOTAL FOR THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS THERE ARE 6 DEPARTMENT CHAIRS REPORTING TO TWO DEANS OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS.
DO YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF ARTS?
>> ACTUALLY, I AM HAPPY THAT I WAS ABLE TO JOIN US BY PHONE.
>> I DO HAVE TO HOP OVER FOR ANOTHER CALL.
I HAVE HAD TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES.
HAPPY TO BE HERE TO TALK ABOUT THE NEW POSITIONS THAT WILL BE PART OF DALLAS COLLEGE AND HAPPY TO SPEAK TO THE CURRENT QUESTION.
WHAT IT MEANS TO HAVE A LEADERSHIP TEAM IN THE SCHOOL OF ART ENTERTAINMENT AND DESIGN.
THREE ACADEMIC AFFAIR POSITION AND SUPPORT 7 DEPARTMENT CHAIRS AND THE BREAKDOWN WILL LOOK LIKE THIS.
THE DEAN ENGLISH WILL OVERSEE THREE DEPARTMENT CHAIRS WHO WILL SUPERVISE IN THE DISCIPLINES OF ENGLISH AND INTEGRATED ENGLISH AND READING.
THE SECOND DEAN IS DEAN OF COMMUNICATION.
OVERSEE TWO DEPARTMENT CHAIRS.
ONE IS ESL AND WORLD LANGUAGES AND THE OTHER DEPARTMENT CHAIR OUT OF THE SUPERVISION OF DEAN AND COMMUNICATION FOCUS ON MASS AND COMMUNICATION AND THAT INCLUDES JOURNALISM.
LASTLY, A DEAN WHO WILL OVERSEE THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR OF VISUAL ART AND DESIGN INCLUDING ARCHITECTURE, VISUAL ART AND FASHION DESIGN, FASHION MARKETING AND THE HUMANITIES AND THEY WILL OVERSEE THE SECOND DEPARTMENT CHAIR INCLUDING DANCE AND DRAMA AND MUSIC.
EXCITING POSITIONS IN OUR SCHOOL AND LOOKING FORWARD TO GO THROUGH THE PROCESS TO IDENTIFY THE CANDIDATES.
>> CAN I MAKE A COMMENT ABOUT THAT, PLEASE.
SOMEONE ASKED ME THIS QUESTION INDEPENDENTLY.
EVERYONE UNDERSTAND THAT WHAT WE HAVE CREATED HERE WE MIGHT IN A YEAR OR WE MIGHT WANT TO TWEAK THAT.
THE ALIGNMENT MIGHT HAVE TO CHANGE.
IT IS NOT 100Â PERCENT CERTAIN.
WE'RE GOING TO BE LOOKING AT THIS TO MAKE SURE WE ARE DOING IT EFFECTIVELY AND
[00:20:02]
EFFICIENTLY.WE ALL FEEL STRONGLY IT IS A GREAT STARTING POINT THAT WILL ALLOW THE FACULTY TO CONTINUE TO DO THE GREAT WORK.
SULLIVAN, CAN WE TALK ABOUT ADJUNCT FACULTY AND HOW THEY FIT IN THE STRUCTURE.
WE HAVE A STRUCTURE OF HOW ADJUNCTS WILL INTERFACE WITH DEPARTMENT CHAIRS AND WILL
DEPARTMENT CHAIRS >> YES, WHEN WE ARE LOOKING HOW THE FUNCTION OF THE ROLES WILL SUPPORT THE FULLTIME AND ADJUNCT FACULTY, WE INCLUDED THE ADJUNCT FACULTY AS NECESSARY FOR US TO MOVE IN DALLAS COLLEGE.
WE HAD FULLTIME FACULTY COME THROUGH THE ADJUNCT FACULTY RANKS.
WE HAD MINIADJUNCTS THAT ARE IN FULLTIME ROLE.
ADJUNCT FACULTIES WILL REPORT TO DEPARTMENT CHAIR AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO THAT RELATIONSHIP THAT THEY'LL GAIN FROM THE LEADERSHIP AND THE MENTORSHIP OF DEPARTMENT CHAIRS.
YOU TALKED ABOUT ADJUNCT FACULTY COMING THROUGH THE RANKS AND BECOMING FULLTIME FACULTY.
SOMETHING THEY CAN DO WITH THE FULL STRUCTURE.
IF SOMEONE ADJUNCT, CAN THEY APPLY FOR THE FULLTIME JOBS?
BE SURE TO LOOK AT THE REQUIREMENTS AND THEY MAY APPLY ANYTIME THERE'S A VACANCY OPEN.
I THINK WE SHOULD HAVE ONGOING CONVERSATION AS TO WHAT IT MEANS TO LOOK AT THE PIPELINE FOR ADJUNCTS IN THE DISTRICT MOVING FORWARD.
IF YOU ARE AN ADJUNCT THAT HAS EXPERIENCE I ENCOURAGE YOU TO APPLY.
MOVING TO THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR ROLE.
CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE ROLE AND HOW IT IS COMPENSATED IN THE NEW MODEL?
THAT ROLE WAS OPENED UP FOR APPLICANTS A WEEK AGO AND IT CLOSES TODAY.
THE FIRST THING THAT I WANT TO SAY TO EVERYONE.
PLEASE, IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT THAT IF YOU HAVE AN INTEREST IN THAT, IT IS NOT TOO LATE.
THE SALARY RANGE FOR THAT JOB IS 75 TO $120,000 A YEAR.
WITH THE DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, WILL THEY ALSO BE RETAINING MARKET DISPARITIES LIKE THEY HAVE NOW? YOU MENTIONED THEY CAN TEACH UP TO TWO SECTIONS OUT OF WORK HOURS FOR EXTRA SERVICE.
ARE THEY GOING TO BE PAID EXTRA SERVICE HOURS?
THERE'S NO MARKET DISPARITIES STIPENDS.
REGARDING EXTRA SERVICE CLASSES.
IN THIS ROLE, IN THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR ROLE, THE INDIVIDUAL IS ALLOWED TO TEACH ONE CLASS DURING BUSINESS HOURS.
FOR THAT ONE CLASS THAT THEY TEACH, THERE'S NO ADDITIONAL PAY.
THERE'S NO EXTRA SERVICE PAY FOR THAT.
HOWEVER, IF A DEPARTMENT CHAIR WANTED TO TEACH A CLASS FOR EXTRA SERVICE PAY THEY WOULD BE ALLOWED TO DO UP TO TWO DURING THE LONG SEMESTER.
IF A DEPARTMENT CHAIR WANTED TO TEACH OUTSIDE OF BUSINESS HOURS, THEY COULD TEACH CLASS DURING THE FALL SEMESTER AND DURING THE SPRING SEMESTER UP TO TWO.
THAT WOULD HAVE TO BE OUTSIDE OF BUSINESS HOURS AGAIN.
NOT ANY TEACHING POSSIBILITY IN THE SHORT SEMESTERS.
THAT'S NOT GOING TO BE AN OPPORTUNITY THAT THEY WOULD HAVE.
WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THE BROAD SCHOOL STRUCTURE.
WHEN WE GO BACK TO THE PHYSICAL CAMPUSES, IF STUDENTS, FACULTY STAFF NEED ASSISTANCE OR HELP, WILL WE BE MAINTAINING THOSE ROLES ON CAMPUS AND SAY DIVISION OFFICES LIKE WHAT WE HAVE?
>> YEAH, WE WILL HAVE SUPPORT STAFF ON EACH CAMPUS.
WE ARE STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE CAPACITY.
IN TERMS OF PREPARING THE DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, THEY WILL HAVE OFFICES ON CAMPUSES.
THE EXACT DISTRIBUTION AND THE PLACE OF THE POSITIONS AT THE SCHOOL LEVEL ARE WORKED OUT ON WHAT MAKES SENSE MOVING FORWARD.
WE WILL UPDATE EVERYONE FORWARD AS SOON AS WE HAVE THEM FINALIZED.
WE WILL LOOK FOR AN UPDATE IN THE COMING WEEKS.
WE HAVE A COMPLAINT ABOUT STUDENT STRUCTURE.
>> CURRENTLY, FINALIZING THE PROCESS OF STUDENT COMPLAINTS.
THIS PROCESS, OF COURSE, WILL INVOLVE THE DEAN OF STUDENTS AND THEIR STRUCTURE
[00:25:05]
TO MAKE SURE THAT THE STUDENTS COMPLAINTS ARE NOT HANDLED IN SILO.ALSO, IF THE COMPLAINT IS ACADEMIC IN NATURE, PROBABLY GO THROUGH WE ACCUSTOMED TO ACADEMIC FIELD.
THE STRUCTURE HAS THE RIGHT TO ATTEMPT TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE TO MAKE SURE THEY'RE SUPPORTING THE STUDENT AND MAKING SURE THEY'RE GIVEN THE RESOURCES AVAILABLE FOR THE STUDENT FOR THE COURSE THEY'RE TAKING.
IF THE RESOLUTION IS NOT RESOLVED, THE STUDENT CAN APPEAL AND LOOKED AT FROM THEIR PERSPECTIVE WITH THE FACULTY MEMBER.
IF THE STUDENT IS NOT SATISFIED, WE CAN GO THROUGH THE RANKS OF THE DEAN POSITION AND ALSO TO THE VICE PROVOST IF THE STUDENT IS NOT CLEAR.
THE DECISION THAT THE VICE PROVOST MAKES, IF IT MAKES IT TO THE LEVEL, IT WILL BE FINAL DECISION.
ONCE IT IS FINALIZED, WE WILL BE SURE TO GET MORE DETAILS AFTER THE PROCESS.
WE ALSO HAD QUESTIONS ABOUT CONTINUING EDUCATION AND THINKING ABOUT THAT.
DO DEPARTMENT CHAIRS HAVE RESPONSIBILITY FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSES? DR. WALKER, YOU ARE MUTED.
>> CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? SORRY ABOUT THAT.
I TALKED ABOUT THE POSSIBILITIES OF WHERE WE CAN GO WITH EACH OF THE SCHOOLS.
IT IS JUST IT IS SO IMPORTANT THAT WE REALIZE THAT CE IS CRITICAL PART OF DALLAS COLLEGE AND SO WE ARE CREATING NEW POSITIONS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE FIND WAYS TO NOT JUST KEEP CE GOING.
WE'RE TRYING TO FIND WAYS TO ALLOW TO GROW AND BECOME INTEGRAL PART OF WHAT WE ARE DOING.
AGAIN, MUCH MORE TO COME ABOUT NEW POSITIONS AROUND THAT.
I DO KNOW THREE THINGS ABOUT CE.
NUMBER ONE, THAT THE CE FACULTY THEY WILL REPORT TO A DEPARTMENT CHAIR WITHIN EACH OF THE SCHOOLS AND THEY WILL CONTINUE TO TEACH CE COURSES.
THE SECOND THING, REGISTRATION FOR CE, THAT'S IN THE WORLD OF WORKFORCE.
THIS IS WHETHER IT IS EMPLOYER RELATED, CE COURSES ALL OF THE CE CLASSES, THE REGISTRATION PIECE IS GOING TO BE TAKEN CARE BY WORKFORCE.
THE THIRD THING IS THAT THE SCHEDULING FOR THOSE COURSES IT WILL FALL UNDER THE SCHEDULING PROCESS THAT WE DESCRIBED EARLIER.
THE SAME SCHEDULING TEAM WILL TAKE CARE OF SCHEDULING THE CLASSES FOR CE.
IN ADDITION TO THIS, THERE'S GOING TO BE A CENTRAL TEAM WHO IS IN THE ACADEMIC SERVICES AREA THAT WILL BE WORKING WITH CE WITH THE SCHOOLS TO UNDERSTAND HOW CE MIGHT BE INTEGRAL PART OF THE OFFERINGS OF EACH OF THE SCHOOLS.
IT IS EXCITING NEW AREA THAT WE ARE GETTING INTO.
EVERYONE HANG ON FOR MORE DETAILS ABOUT HOW THAT'S GOING TO WORK.
EARLIER WE TALKED ABOUT THE DEAN OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS.
I UNDERSTAND IT IS GOING TO BE A MAJOR ROLE IN THE FUTURE MOVING FORWARD.
DO CURRENT DEANS AUTOMATICALLY BECOME DEANS OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS?
THAT WAS A JOB THAT WAS IT HAS BEEN IT WAS POSTED LAST THURSDAY A WEEK AGO.
SO WE'RE LOOKING FOR THAT TO BE HIGHLY COMPETITIVE SEARCH PROCESS.
THAT IS NOT ONE OF THE JOBS THAT HAS MOVED OVER IN THE NEW WORLD.
THE PREVIOUS DEANS IN THE DIVISION OFFICES THAT IS NOT AUTOMATIC ROLLOVER.
IT IS A COMPETITIVE SEARCH PROCESS THAT IS TAKING PLACE TO FILL THE ACADEMIC DEAN ROLES.
SULLIVAN? CERTAIN DISCIPLINES ARE GOING TO RESIDE.
THEY ASKED ABOUT [INAUDIBLE] AND DIW.
>> DEPARTMENT CHAIRS WILL TEACH SIMILAR SUBJECT AREAS.
I DID SEND AN EMAIL THAT HAS THE BREAKDOWN IN TERMS OF THE DISCIPLINES ASSOCIATED WITH THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR AND DEAN ROLE.
[00:30:03]
I ENCOURAGE YOU TO LOOK THROUGH THAT.I WANTED TO MENTION THAT, I BELIEVE, THE LINK WAS NOT WORKING CORRECTLY AND YOU HAD TO GO THROUGH A DIFFERENT PLACE TO GET TO THIS CONVERSATION.
I WANT TO SAY IN ADVANCE I WILL PROBABLY GET EMAILS ABOUT THAT.
TO ANSWER THE QUESTION, THE DISCIPLINARY [INAUDIBLE].
ALSO, IN THE DESCRIPTION OF DEANS OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS IT TALKS ABOUT GALLERY AND FACULTY SUPPORT.
ARE WE STILL GOING TO HAVE GALLERY MANAGER POSITION?
>> YES, WE ARE TALKING ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS FOR GALLERY MANAGERS AND LEADERSHIP THAT WILL REPORT TO THE DEAN OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS.
ONE OF THE DEAN OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS POSITION.
WE ARE LOOKING AT FINALIZING THAT.
WE PROJECT THE HIRING WILL TAKE SOONER RATHER THAN LATER HOPEFULLY TO BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF 2021.
DEPENDING ON HOW WE REACH THE FINAL DECISIONS ON THE PLAN OR CHART.
WE'RE GETTING CLOSE TO THE QUESTIONS THAT WE HAD IN ADVANCE.
ANYTHING ELSE THAT WE MAY NOT HAVE COVERED THAT YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT FACULTY GOES AWAY WITH TODAY? ANYTHING THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED FROM DOING INTRODUCTION?
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I REALLY WANT FACULTY TO HEAR IS THAT WE THOUGHT ABOUT THESE FUNCTIONS, RIGHT.
WHAT IT MEANT TO SUPPORT FACULTY, WHAT IT MEANT TO HAVE DEAN OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS SUPPORT DEPARTMENT CHAIRS AND HOW THAT WILL MAKE IT IN TERMS OF OUR GOALS AND STRATEGIC GOALS FOR THE DISTRICT.
WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THESE ROLES.
I KNOW THERE'S A LOT OF QUESTIONS THAT I HAVE RECEIVED OVER THE LAST FEW DAYS IN TERMS OF WILL THE DEPARTMENT CHAIRS HAVE ENOUGH SKILL SET IN TERMS OF SUPPORT AND THE FACULTY IN DISCIPLINARY AREAS.
BACK TO WALKER'S POINT, WE ARE LOOKING FOR THE BRIGHTEST TALENT TO EMERGE THROUGH THE PROCESS AND WE ARE EXCITING TO SEE WHAT IS OUT THERE IN THE DISTRICT TO HAPPEN IN THE ROLES AND WHO CAN READ AND STEP IN THE ROLES.
WE TOOK A LOT OF ENERGY AND A LOT OF REFLECTION TO THINK THROUGH WHAT IT MEANT TO RE IMAGINE THE SCHOOLS IN DALLAS COLLEGE AND PARTICULARLY FROM OUR SCHOOL AND I FEEL LIKE IT IS A TIME OF REFRESHING COMING THROUGH THE SCHOOL IN TERMS OF LOOKING AT THE STRUCTURE TO ENHANCE OUR GOALS AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR STUDENTS TO ENTER APPROACHES AS WE MOVE FORWARD.
DR. WALKER, ANYTHING ELSE FROM YOU?
I WOULD LIKE TO SAY ONE MORE THING.
AGAIN, THIS IS SOMETHING THAT I HAVE SPOKEN TO MANY OF YOU ALREADY.
I WANT TO MAKE SURE EVERYBODY UNDERSTANDS.
WHEN WE MAKE THESE CHANGES AND WHEN WE TALK ABOUT HOW EXCITING THEY'RE, THEY'RE EXCITING CHANGES BECAUSE WE BELIEVE THEY ALLOW US TO DO THE GREAT WORK THAT YOU DO.
IT IS IMPORTANT, WHEN WE UNDERGO SUCH AN ENORMOUS STRUCTURAL CHANGE THAT WE PUT PROCESSES IN PLACE AND AREAS IN PLACE THAT WILL ALLOW US TO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS IN THEIR EFFORTS.
SO JUST AS ALL OF YOU HAVE FOCUSED MANY OF YOU FOR A LONG ON HELPING THE STUDENTS BE SUCCESSFUL.
AS WE MAKE THESE CHANGES AND WE TALK ABOUT THINGS LIKE WE'RE GOING TO BE STUDENT CENTRIC AND WE'RE GOING TO DO THIS OR THAT.
PLEASE UNDERSTAND, IN THE MIST OF THIS GREAT CHANGE, WE ARE MOTIVATED TO CONTINUE TO DO THE THINGS THAT HAVE SERVED US WELL IN THE PAST AND THAT IS FIND OUT HOW BEST TO SERVE OUR STUDENTS AND ALLOW OUR FACULTY TO BE SUCCESSFUL.
>> I APPRECIATE THE TIME THAT EVERYONE HAS TAKEN TO LISTEN IN AND I ENCOURAGE YOU TO REACH OUT TO ME, TO SULLIVAN, TO EVERYONE TO WORK TOGETHER TO MAKE IT THE BEST THAT IT CAN BE.
WE ARE GETTING NEAR END OF TIME.
I WANT TO SAY, IN A FEW DAYS, WHEN WE GET THE CAPTIONS REPORTED IN THE PROGRAM AND THE OTHERS WITH PROVOST, IT WILL BE IN SHARE POINT.
IF YOU WANT TO VISIT, YOU CAN WATCH THOSE AS WELL.
[00:35:03]
THE POSITIONS THAT WE TALKED ABOUT TODAY DO CLOSE THIS AFTERNOON.IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THOSE, YOU WANT TO CHECKOUT THE DISTRICT WEBSITE AND THE JOB LISTS SO YOU CAN APPLY FOR THOSE.
DR. WALKER, THANK YOU SO MUCH AND FOR THE WELL OVER FOUR HUNDRED OF YOU THAT ARE LIVE WITH US NOW.
IT IS A FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND WE APPRECIATE THE TIME YOU BEING WITH US AND FOR US TO MAKE A DALLAS COLLEGE BETTER.
BYEBYE.
