SORRY ABOUT THE WEB LINK MIX UP THERE.[Academics Town Hall: Faculty Supervision and Scheduling ]
THANKS FOR JOINING US ON SWAGIT FOR THE FIRST OF OUR ACADEMIC TOWN HALLS.THIS ONE FEATUREING VICE PROVOST DR. ROB DEHAS, VICE PROVOST OF THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION.
AND TODAY'S TOPIC IS THE RECENT ANNOUNCEMENT AROUND THE DESIGN OF THE NEW ACADEMICS ORGANIZATION WITH A SPECIFIC FOCUS ON THE ROLL OF FACULTY SUPERVISION, THE STRUCTURE OF THAT, THE NEW SCHEUDLING TEAM.
AND BEFORE WE BEGIN, I'LL TURN IT OVER TO OUR PROVOST DR. SHONNDA FLOYD FOR A FEW WORDS OF WELCOME.
>> THANKS EVERYONE FOR JOINING THE TOWN HALL TODAY AND SORRY FOR THE TECHNICAL ISSUES.
WE ARE WORKING WITH COLLEAGUES ACROSS ACADEMIC AFFAIRS FOR WORK FORCE ADVANCEMENT AND STUDENT SUCCESS.
LAST WEEK WE POSTED POSITIONS FOR VARIOUS DISCIPLINES.
TODAY'S INFORMATION SESSION WILL PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THOSE ROLES.
I WANT TO ENSURE YOU THE FULL TIME FACULTY WILL BE ENGAGED IN THE PROCESS AFTER THE INITIAL SCREENING FOR MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS.
>> THIS DOES NOT RULE OUT THE POSSIBILITY OF REASSIGNED TIME ON A CASEBYCASE BASIS.
BUT THIS MEANS THAT NONE OF THIS GOES TO THE CREATION OF THE SCHEDULE.
PLEASE KNOW THAT THE DEPARTMENT CARE THAT OVERSEES FACULTY OF A SIMILAR DISCIPLINE AND IT SOMEONE OF SIMILAR EXPERIENCE.
HERE YOU SEE THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR'S REPORT.
[00:05:03]
IN THE CASE OF OUR SCHOOL THE DEPARTMENT REPORTS DIRECTLY TO ME.WE'LL LIKELY ADD ADDITIONAL CHAIRS TO SUPPORT THE FACULTY.
LET ME TALK ABOUT THE SCHEDULING CHANGES.
GREAT, THANKS FOR THE SECOND SLIDE.
HERE WE SEE THE CREATION OF A SINGLE SCHEDULING TEAM THAT IS HEADED UP BY NICOLE.
THE SCHEDULING TEAM FEATURES REPRESENTATION FROM EACH SCHOOL WITH PEOPLE FAMILIAR WITH THE SCHEDULE.
EACH SCHOOL HAS THREE INDIVIDUALS ON THE TEAM FOCUSED ON THE SCHEDULE.
THIS TEAM WILL LEVERAGE A TOOL AND PRESERVE THE HUMAN TOUCH.
FACULTY HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPRESS PREFERENCES EACH YEAR.
AND THEN ASSIGN FACULTY TO THE COMPLETED SCHEDULE.
LET'S TURN TO THE QUESTIONS AND WE'LL START WITH SCHEDULING.
THE FACULTY WITH SHARE THEIR PREFERENCES IN THE FUTURE.
THERE WAS A SCHEDULING PILOT IN THE LAST TWO SEMESTERS.
TEACHING PREFERENCES WERE COLLECTED PRIOR TO THE SEMESTER.
IN THE FUTURE THE DATA IN THE FORM IS PROVIDED TO THE DEPARTMENT CHAIRS AND COLLECTED BY THE SCHEDULING TEAMS TO HELP CREATE THE OPTIMAL SCHEDULES.
THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION WAS NOT PART OF THIS BUT ALL SCHOOLS WILL GO THROUGH THE PROCESS FOR THE CREATION OF FUTURE SCHEDULES.
LET'S TALK ABOUT FUTURE SCHEDULES.
ARE THEY PERMITTED TO OFFER COURSES OUTSIDE AFTER THEY HAVE REACHED A LOAD? AND CAN AN INSTRUCTOR OFFER A SECTION REGARDLESS?
>> WE TEND TO OFFER COURSES BASED ON STUDENT DEMAND.
THESE INDICATORS INCLUDE STUDENT SURVEYS AND WE'RE GOING TO BE CAREFUL TO LOOK AT ENROLLMENT TRENDS.
IF THE PROPOSED CLASS IS SUPPORTED BY THESE MEASURES, WE CAN DISCUSS THE TIMES AND FORMAT.
THERE'S OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE WITH FACULTY AND OTHER PEOPLE.
LET'S SAY A STUDENT ISSUE ARISES, A SUBSTITUTION QUESTION OR A STUDENT WANTS TO BE ADDED TO A SECTION AND THE CLASS LINK, WHO MANAGES THAT PROCESS?
>> CONSISTENT WITH THE APPROACH THAT'S STUDENT CENTRIC, ALL MATTER ARE DEALT WITH WAYS THAT ARE EQUITABLE AND ENSURE ALL STUDENTS ARE PLACED CORRECTLY.
SPECIFIC ACADEMIC ADVISING TEAMS HAVE BEEN ADDED.
THESE ADVISORS COORDINATE THE WORK AND WORK WITH THE SCHEDULING TEAM TO MAKE SURE COURSES ARE MANAGED.
SCHEDULING RELATED REQUESTS ARE PASSED TO THE SCHEDULING TEAM.
THROUGH THE ENROLLMENT MONITORING PROCESS.
THESE REQUEST ADHERE TO THE NEW DALLAS COLLEGE STUDENTCENTRIC PRACTICES.
[00:10:08]
AND FACULTY CONTINUE TO PROVIDE ADVICE AND GUIDANCE AND REFER THEM TO ADVISORS WHEN ADDITIONAL SUPPORT IS NEEDS.>> HOW DO YOU SEE ADJUNCTS IN THE NEW STRUCTURE? ARE THE DEPARTMENT CHAIRS OVERSEEING THEM?
>> ADJUNCT FACULTY IS SUPERVISED BY THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR.
THE COMMUNICATE BETWEEN THE TWO IS ONGOING.
THEY SHOULD CONTACT THE CHAIR WITH ANY ISSUES.
>> WHAT IF THEY WANT TO APPLY FOR A FULL TIME FACULTY POSITION?
ADJUNCTS PROVIDE A NECESSARY SERVICE FOR THE COLLEGE AND THE COLLEGE HAS HIRED MANY FULL TIME FACULTY FROM THE RANKS.
THEY MUST MEET THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION AND THEY MUST APPLY WHEN THERE'S A VACANCY WITHIN THE SCHOOL.
LET'S TALK ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR ROLE.
CAN YOU SPEAK TO THE GROUP ABOUT HOW THEY GOING WILL BE COMPENSATED?
>> THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR POSTING WENT OUT FRIDAY AND WILL CLOSE AT THE END OF THIS FRIDAY.
I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE INTERESTED IN THE POSITION TO APPLY.
AND IT'S LISTED THE COMPENSATION IS BETWEEN 75,OOO AND 125,000 FOR THIS ROLE.
>> THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR MAY KEEP TWO SECTIONS OUTSIDE OF HOURS FOR SERVICES.
WILL THEY BE COMPENSATED FOR THIS?
THERE WON'T BE A MARKET DISPARITY STIPEND ATTACHED TO THE POSITION.
DEPARTMENT CHAIRS ARE PERMITTED TO TEACH ONE [INAUDIBLE] AND NOT RECEIVE ANY EXTRA SERVICE.
HOWEVER, IF THEY TEACH OUTSIDE OF NORMAL BUSINESS HOURS, UP TO TWO SECTIONS ARE PERMIT IN THE FALL AND SPRING.
THEY RECEIVE EXTRA SERVICES FOR THESE COURSES THAT ARE TAUGHT.
>> WE HAVE RECEIVE QUESTIONS ABOUT GRADING DISPUTES AND COMPLAINTS.
>> YOU ARE ASSUMING THERE ARE GOING TO BE COMPLAINTS; NOT IN OUR SCHOOL.
WE'RE ENSURING THIS PROCESS IS FAIR AND EQUITABLE.
IT NEEDS TO INVOLVE OUR ACADEMIC SERVICE DIVISION TO ENSURE THE COMPLAINTS ARE NOT HANDLED IN SILOS.
THE PROCESS WILL RESEMBLE THE FOLLOWING: THE INSTRUCTOR ATTEMPTS TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE.
IF NOT REACHED, IT'S ASSIGNED TO THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR OF THE DISCIPLINE.
IF THE STUDENT IS NOT SATISFIED WITH THE RESOLUTION, THEY CAN FORWARD IT TO THE DEAN OR VICE PROVOST.
>> WE HAVE RECEIVED QUESTIONS ABOUT CONTINUING EDUCATION.
HOW ARE WE GOING TO THINK ABOUT THE CE PROGRAM?
>> AS OUR FACULTY KNOW, CE IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION AND
[00:15:08]
DALLAS COLLEGE.WE WANT TO MAKE SURE WE'RE PRIORITIZING CE IN THE FINAL PROCESS.
MANY POSITIONS AROUND THIS ARE BEING CONFIRMED.
I CAN CONFIRM FIRST, CE FACULTY IS SUPERVISED BY THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR WITHIN THEIR INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL.
AND THE FACULTY IS CONTINUING TO TEACH CE COURSES.
SECOND THE REGISTRATION (NO AUDIO).
THIRD, THE SCHEDULING TEAM WILL SCHEDULE ALL CE COURSES.
IN ADDITION TO THESE SERVICES THERE'S STRATEGIC THINKING THAT INTEGRATES ACROSS THE SCHOOLS.
THIS TEAM WORKS WITH A SMALLER TEAM TO ENSURE THE SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM.
WE'RE FOCUSED ON GETTING THIS RIGHT AND APPRECIATE YOUR PATIENCE.
WE HAVE ANSWERED SEVERAL QUESTIONS THAT APPLY TO THE SCHOOL AND FACULTY.
THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK TO YOU ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION.
WHAT ARE THE GUIDING PRINCIPLES BEHIND THE DESIGN?
>> YOU KNOW, AS A LOT OF PEOPLE WATCHING TODAY KNOW, OVER THE LAST YEAR, WE HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENGAGE A NUMBER OF EDUCATION LEADERS FROM ACROSS THE NATION ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY TO DESIGN A NEW SCHOOL OF EDUCATION AT DALLAS COLLEGE.
IN THESE DISCUSSIONS, I HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENGAGE A NUMBER OF FACULTY IN CONVERSATIONS.
AND THROUGH THE CONVERSATIONS THERE SURFACED THERE'S CORE PILLARS THAT PROVIDE HIGH QUALITY SCHOOL EDUCATION PROGRAMS. THERE'S FIVE CORE PILLARS.
EQUITY, SUSTAINABILITY, AND THE ABILITY TO CREATE HIGH QUALITY, AND AFFORDABILITY, AND IMPACT.
WE CAN BE THE FIRST SCHOOL IN THE STATE TO DEMONSTRATE THIS.
WE TAKE AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO THIS.
I'M GOING TO GO THROUGH THE PILLARS IN MORE DETAIL.
AROUND EQUITY, BY RECRUITING AND ENROLLING AND SERVING UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS, WE'RE DEDICATED TO SERVING LOW INCOME CLASSES.
STAINABILITY IS REALIZED THROUGH PATHWAYS AND WORKING WITH DISTRICT AND STATE PARTNERS.
WORK FORCE TRAINING IS A PRIORITY TO INNOVATE ON WORK/LEARN MODELS, STRONG STUDENT TEACHING PARTNERSHIPS WITH AN EYE TOWARD DIGITAL LEARNING.
AS THE LOWEST COST BACHELOR DEGREE, WE PROVIDE ACCESS ACROSS THE COMMUNITY.
IMPACT IS IN ALIGNMENT WITH OUR OWN DISTRICT STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT MEASURES.
[00:20:02]
WHAT'S THE CORE FOCUS OF THE DEANS AND HOW TO THEY HELP WITH THE GOALS MOVING FORWARD?IN ADDITION TO THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR POSITION WE DISCUSSED, THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION HAS FOUR DEANS THAT WERE POSTED LAST WEEK.
AND EACH OF THESE DEANS OWN WHAT I LIKE TO CALL AN ECOSYSTEM WITHIN THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION.
I'M GOING THROUGH WHAT THAT MEANS AS WELL.
WHEN WE'RE TALKING ABOUT AN ECOSYSTEM, THE DIVISION OF LABOR REFLECTS THE NECESSARY PIECES THAT WE'RE GOING TO NEED AND THE SKILLS THAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR OF THESE INDIVIDUALS TO HOLISTICALLY SERVE STUDENTS AND FACULTY WITHIN THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION.
WHEN WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE DEAN OF BACCALAUREATE STUDIES, THIS REQUIRES A DEAN WITH KNOWLEDGE OF THE ACCREDITATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS.
AND THAT ENSURES OUR SCHOOL OF EDUCATION MAINTAINS HIGH QUALITY.
THEY LEAD WITH EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING SPACE AND THIS PUTS THE SCHOOL AT THE FOREFRONT OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES.
THIS IS BUILDING CLASSROOMS TO SUPPORT VIRTUAL K12 CLASSROOMS, AND AVATARS, AND A LOT OF INNOVATION AND EXCITEMENT ABOUT THIS.
WITH THE CHILDHOOD AND EARLY LEARNING DEAN, THIS SPACE AND ECOSYSTEM REQUIRES SOMEONE EMBEDDED IN THE EARLY CHILDHOOD COMMUNITY AND RESPECTED AS A LEADER IN OUR REGION AND STATE.
THIS INDIVIDUAL IN THIS SPACE, THE TEAM DESIGNS AND IMPLEMENTS THE EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION THAT MEETS THE COMMUNITY NEEDS.
THIS IS A CRITICAL SPACE, ESPECIALLY NOW DURING COVID AND BECOMES MORE CRITICAL POSTCOVID.
WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THE TEACHER REPRESENTATION DEAN AND PATHWAYS, THIS IS A SPACE THAT REQUIRES, YOU KNOW, A FOCUS ON TRAINING, ASSESSMENT, TEACHER RESIDENCY MODELS, AND PAID TEACHER INTERNSHIPS AND STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS THAT ALLOW US TO BUILD ROBUST PATHWAYS WITH LOCAL AND REGIONAL PARTNERS.
AND THE DEAN OF STUDENT FACULTY EMPOWERMENT.
THIS IS WHAT I'M GOING TO CALL OUR SECRET SAUCE.
ONE OF THE PILLARS OF THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION, AND I ARTICULATED THIS BACK IN JULY, IS THERE HAS TO BE AN AUTHENTIC AND INTENTIONAL LENS TO INCLUSION.
THEY WORK WITH THE DISTRICT OFFICE AND WORK TO EMBODY THAT THROUGH THE CULTURAL FABRIC IN OUR SCHOOL OF EDUCATION.
I'LL CLOSE ON THIS QUESTION BY SAYING IT'S IMPORTANT WHY THESE ARE EACH DIFFERENT DEANS.
THE WORD ECOSYSTEMS WAS INTENTIONALLY USED TO DESCRIBE THE WORK.
EACH OF THESE ARE INTERCONNECTED AND THE WORK CAN'T HAPPEN IN SILOS.
AND EACH OF THESE PILLARS WORKING TOGETHER AND I'M EXCITED ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY WE HAVE TO BUILD AND THIS INNOVATIVE DESIGN.
>> HOW DO YOU SEE THE FACULTY AND DEANS INTERACTING WITH EACH OTHER?
[00:25:09]
>> THERE NEEDS TO BE ENGAGEMENT BETWEEN THE TWO.
JUST AS I COMMUNICATED WITH THE FACULTY FOR THE WAY I HOPE I'M HOLDING MYSELF ACCOUNTABLE, I WANT TO BE HANDSON AND VISIBLE AND ACCESSIBLE.
I EXPECT EACH DEAN TO TAKE A SIMILAR APPROACH.
EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS IN THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION, NEEDS TO HAPPEN COLLABORATIVELY.
MY GOAL IS TO CREATE A CULTURE WHERE EVERYONE WITHIN THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION, REGARDLESS OF POSITION OR TITLE, WORKS TOGETHER TO THE UNIFIED GOAL OF BEST PREPARING OUR STUDENTS FOR THE WORK FORCE.
I'M EXCITED ABOUT THE WAY SOME OF THIS HAS TAKEN PLACE.
WE DO HAVE EVERY DAY, FACULTY FROM ALL OF OUR SEVEN CAMPUSES COLLABORATING WITH DEANS AND ADMINISTRATION AND ADVISORS.
SO, YOU KNOW, I THINK THE MESSAGE THERE IS THAT WE WILL CONTINUE TO, UM, TO DEMAND THIS COLLABORATION AND BECAUSE WE'RE ALL ON THE SAME TEAM.
AND THAT OUR NEW STRUCTURE CONTINUES TO SUPPORT THE COLLABORATION AND THE FOUNDATION HAVE BEGUN TO BUILD.
WHAT KIND OF INNOVATION DO YOU THINK THE DEANS ARE GOING TO BRING AND HOW DOES IT IMPACT FACULTY?
AS I TALK ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION, IT'S EVIDENT THAT I GET EXCITED.
I'M EXCITED BECAUSE THERE'S SO MUCH MOMENTUM AROUND THIS WORK.
THERE'S A BUZZ LOCALLY AND REGIONALLY AND NATIONALLY AROUND WHAT WE'RE DOING.
JUST IN THE LAST SIX MONTHS, WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SECURE MORE THAN A HALF MILLION DOLLARS IN PRIVATE PHILANTHROPY.
THESE ARE PRIVATE DOLLARS TO SUPPORT THE WORK WE'RE GOING TO DO.
AND ANOTHER RECENT INNOVATION, WE HAVE RECENTLY BEEN INVITED TO JOIN THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR TEACHER'S RESIDENCY NETWORK.
AND WITHIN THIS, YOU KNOW I'M EXCITED ABOUT A LOT OF COMPONENTS ABOUT IT.
THE MOST EXCITING IS THEY LAUNCHED A $20Â MILLION INITIATIVE TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF BLACK EDUCATORS.
BY BEING A PART OF THIS, WE'RE GOING TO EMBARK ACROSS THE ENTIRE SCHOOL, IN AN EFFORT TO DEVELOP A CENTER FOR THE EDUCATION OF BLACK EDUCATORS.
OUR REGION IS NEED OF ROBUST PIPELINES OF TEACHERS, ESPECIALLY MINORITY TEACHERS.
AS WE CONTINUE TO BUILD OUT THE STRUCTURE, I'M EXCITED NOT ONLY TO ENGAGE THE DEANS IN THE WORK, BUT THE FACULTY AND OTHERS ACROSS THE COLLEGE IN DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS THAT ALL WORK HANDINHAND WITH US TOWARD THE COMMON GOAL.
MORE TO COME WITH THAT, BUT WE'RE DEFINITELY THERE'S A FOUNDATION THAT'S BEEN SET AND THIS STRUCTURE IS GOING TO SERVE AS THE ROAD MAP TO HELP US AND THE LAUNCH PAD TO ACHIEVE GREAT THINGS FOR OUR STUDENTS.
[00:30:04]
I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR THE THOUGHT AND TIME FOR ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS.
WE'LL GET A RECORDING UP IN A WEEK AND THAT'S UP IN SHARE POINT FOR YOU TO LOOK AT.
AND FOR ALL THE FACULTY THAT JOINED US, THANK YOU FOR TAKING TIME OUT OF YOUR DAY AND SUBMITTING THE QUESTIONS AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE UPCOMING CHANGES.
HAVE A GREAT REST OF YOUR DAY AND SEE YOU SOON.
BYE.
