[ERG Adelante Meeting]
THIS [INAUDIBLE] WITH DALLAS COLLEGE EMPLOYEE RESOURCE GROUP.MS. BOCCALANDRO YOU HAVE THE STAGE TO BEGIN THE MEETING.
WELL, THANK YOU WE ARE HERE COLLEAGUES. THIS IS SUCH A GREAT EVENT THAT WE HAVE PLANNED FOR YOU.
WE HAVE BEEN WORKING A LOT FOR MANY, MANY YEARS.
AND YOU WILL HEAR OUR PANELISTS TALK ABOUT THIS.
I WANT TO SHOW YOU IN THIS NEXT SLIDE THE AGENDA SO THAT YOU SEE IT AND YOU KNOW THAT WE HAVE NOT ONLY ARE YOU GOING TO HEAR FROM ME, BUT YOU'RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO HEAR DR.
JOSE ADAMES TALKING ABOUT THE HISTORY.
AND THEN DR. MARISA PIERCE WILL SHARE THE VISION, MISSION AND OBJECTIVES OF OUR ERG.
AND THEN WE HAVE A GREAT GUEST, WHICH IS CHAIR DIANA FLORES, WHO'S GOING TO TALK TO US HOW TO CONNECT WITH THE COMMUNITY.
THEN ISAAC FAZ IS ALSO ONE OF OUR GUEST SPEAKERS AND HE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF THE LATINO VOTE.
AND THEN WE WILL HAVE Q&A AND THEN YOU WILL HAVE THE CLOSING REMARKS.
I DO WANT TO TALK ABOUT SOME RULES.
YOU KNOW THAT WE ARE RECORDING.
AND THAT WAY SOME OF OUR COLLEAGUES THAT CAN'T BE HERE TODAY CAN SEE IT LATER ON.
AND THEN WE WILL HAVE Q&A AND ALSO THE CHAT.
YOU HAVE THE Q&A AND THE CHAT.
YOU CAN ALWAYS ASK THE QUESTIONS THERE AS WELL.
SO WITHOUT MORE HESITATION, I DO WANT TO GIVE THE MICROPHONE TO DR.
JOSE ADAMES AND ALL OF YOU KNOW THAT HE IS THE PRESIDENT OF EL CENTRO.
NOW, I'D LIKE TO SAY WHO HE IS FOR ME.
HE IS A LEADER THAT HAS BEEN SO GRACIOUS TO BE A MENTOR FOR MANY, MANY PROFESSIONALS.
BUT HE DOES MENTOR HISPANICS WITH A LOT OF CARE AND DEDICATION.
I HAVE BEEN PRIVILEGED TO BE MENTORED BY DR.
JOSE ADAMES. I WAS ABLE TO SHADOW HIM AS THE PRESIDENT OF EL CENTRO.
AND I KNOW HE'S GOING TO BE DOING REALLY INCREDIBLE PROJECTS IN THE FUTURE.
AND I WOULD LIKE TO FOR EACH OF THE PANELISTS TO TALK BEFORE THEY START ABOUT THEIR HERITAGE, BECAUSE HISPANIC MEANS MANY, MANY THINGS.
FOR EXAMPLE, IN THE CHURCH THAT I GO TO, BEING HISPANIC IS 16 NATIONALITIES.
SO MY HISPANIC HERITAGE COMES FROM VENEZUELA.
JOSE ADAMES' HERITAGE COMES FROM PUERTO RICO.
BUT I'M GOING TO BE HIGHLIGHTING THIS BECAUSE IT IS HERITAGE MONTH AS WELL.
ARE WE HAVING SOME TECHNICAL PROBLEMS? I BELIEVE HE MAY BE HAVING TECHNICAL ISSUES.
PIERCE, IN THE MOMENT THAT WE [INAUDIBLE] DR.
LET ME INTRODUCE HER. MARISA PIERCE HAS JUST BEEN NAMED THIS INCREDIBLE POSITION, LEADING STUDENT SERVICES FOR EVERYTHING THAT SHE HAS DONE IN NORTHLAKE AND BEYOND THAT AND AGAIN, I WANT TO JUST WHO SHE IS FOR ME, SHE IS THE FIERCE LEADER THAT SINCE DAY ONE HAS BEEN KEEPING ALL OF US ON TRACK.
AND A LOT OF IT WAS LIKE HERDING CATS.
SO I REALLY WANT TO WELCOME MARISA PIERCE AND SHE'S GOING TO TALK ABOUT OUR ERG AND A LITTLE BIT OF WHERE WE ARE AND WHERE WE'RE GOING.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THAT INTRODUCTION.
IT IS TRULY MY PLEASURE TO BE WITH EVERYONE TODAY.
AND I WILL PICK UP AND SHARE WITH YOU ALL A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR INTERIM BOARD AS WE ARE TRYING TO GET DR. ADAMES BACK ON WITH THE TECHNOLOGY.
SO WE'LL SKIP AHEAD A LITTLE BIT ON BEHALF OF THE INTERIM BOARD [INAUDIBLE] LIKE TO THANK YOU ALL FOR JOINING US TODAY.
[00:05:02]
THIS CONVENING MARKS A MILESTONE FOR A MOMENT FOR ALL OF US.IT COMES AT A TIME WHEN WE COULD ALL USE TOGETHERNESS, A GREAT SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND AN IMPENETRABLE SUPPORT SYSTEM.
WHAT I'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU ALL TODAY IS THAT WE HAVE WORKED VERY HARD AND INTENTIONAL TO INTENTIONALLY TO BRING FORTH OUR EMPLOYEE RESOURCE GROUP PROGRAMING IN ORDER TO PROVIDE ALL OF US A RICH AND REWARDING EXPERIENCE.
THE MOST PART IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF WHAT WE'VE DONE IS FINALLY HERE, AND THAT IS ALL OF YOU. SO, AGAIN, WE THANK YOU FOR BEING WITH US.
I KNOW THAT TOGETHER WE CAN ACHIEVE GREAT THINGS FOR OURSELVES AND OUR STUDENTS.
OUR VISION AS A BOARD AND AS A COLLECTIVE IS TO BE SUPPORTIVE, PROVIDE INSPIRATION AND TO BE CONTINUOUS ADVOCATES FOR ONE ANOTHER AS A PEOPLE THROUGH OUR HERITAGE WHO ARE ALREADY SO GROUNDED IN A CULTURE OF CARE.
OUR MISSION IS TO ENSURE THAT THIS CULTURE PERMEATES OUR INSTITUTION AS ONE SO AS TO EMBRACE AND FOSTER THE SUCCESS OF LATINOS AND LATINAS.
WITH THAT IN MIND AND IN CONTINUING OUR PLANNING AHEAD, I'D LIKE TO TAKE A MOMENT TO INTRODUCE OUR INTERIM BOARD I SERVE, AS YOU KNOW, AS INTERIM DR. KATHY ACOSTA, EXECUTIVE ADMINISTRATOR FOR ONE OF OUR COMMUNITY CAMPUSES THAT HAVE [INAUDIBLE] VICE CHAIR.
MR. ARTURO OZUNA, SENIOR MANAGER FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT EXCUSE ME, SENIOR MANAGER FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, AS TREASURER.
DR. JAVIER OLGUIN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AT ANOTHER ONE OF OUR COMMUNITY CAMPUSES AS SECRETARY AND MS. ANABEL JUAREZ DEAN OF ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT AND STUDENT SUCCESS AT NORTHLAKE IS OUR COMMUNICATIONS AND MEMBERSHIP OFFICER.
AS A BOARD, WE WANT YOU ALL TO KNOW THAT WE ARE COMMITTED TO ESTABLISHING A FRAMEWORK GROUNDED IN THE INFORMED PRACTICE, GUIDANCE AND DIRECTION AS PROVIDED BY OUR FOUNDING MEMBERS AND IN ALIGNMENT WITH OUR CHARTER AND THE OVERALL VISION, MISSION AND PURPOSE OF DALLAS COLLEGE, DALLAS COLLEGE'S EMPLOYEE RESOURCE GROUPS.
AS MANY OF YOU KNOW, YESTERDAY WE HAD A CONVERSATION OR WE WERE ENLIGHTENED BY A CONVERSATION BY OUR BOARD, ALONG WITH CHANCELLOR MAY AS TO THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR RESOURCE GROUPS. I'M HOPING THAT DR.
ADAMES HAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO COME BACK ON AND SPEAK TO YOU ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR ERG AND HOW WE CAME TO BE IN TERMS OF THE SUPPORT OF OUR ADVISORY GROUP AND OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM THAT'S WORKED OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS.
SO WITH THAT IN MIND, I'D LIKE TO MAKE SURE THAT EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU KNOW THAT WE ARE WE ARE INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL FOR YOUR PRESENCE TODAY.
AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO MOVING US FORWARD AS A TEAM AND OUR FIRST GENERAL MEMBERSHIP THAT IS FORTHCOMING LATER THIS MONTH.
SO I WITH THAT BEING SAID, I WILL CONCLUDE MY PART OF THE OF THE PRESENTATION AND MOVE ON TO NOW INTRODUCE DR.
ADAMES, WHO I BELIEVE IS READY TO GO.
CAN EVERYONE HEAR ME. YES, OK, SO THANK YOU, DR.
PIERCE. THIS IS REALLY A VERY EXCITING TIME.
I'M PLEASED TO SHARE WITH YOU A SYNOPSIS OF THE ORIGINS OF ADELANTE AND ITS IMPORTANCE.
THE ELECTION PROCESS FOR THE INTERIM BOARD AND THE ROLE OF THE EXECUTIVE SPONSORS.
ADELANTE AS YOU MAY KNOW, IS A SPANISH WORD THAT MEANS MOVE FORWARD TO FURTHER TO MOVE AHEAD THE FORMATION OF THE FIRST DALLAS COLLEGE OF LATINO EMPLOYEE RESOURCE GROUP.
ERG HAS BEEN REALLY A JOURNEY OF TWO YEARS, THE IDEA OF THE LATINO ERG WAS CONCEPTUALIZED IN 2018 IN A CONVERSATION THAT [INAUDIBLE] AND I HAD AFTER ONE OF THE MEETINGS OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES. IF WE CAN GO TO THE COMPRESSION PLANNING WITH SUPPORT OF THE DISTRICT HR OFFICE OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND [INAUDIBLE] AND [INAUDIBLE] IN NOVEMBER OF 2018 WE CONDUCTED A COMPRESSION PLANNING SESSION AT THE WEST CAMPUS, AS YOU CAN SEE IN THAT SLIDE. WITH NEARLY 60 LATINO AND ALLIED EMPLOYEES IN ATTENDANCE.
ALLIES ARE NON LATINO SUPPORTERS OF ADELANTE.
AN OUTCOME OF THE SESSION WAS A COMMITMENT TO ESTABLISH A LATINO ERG AND THE SETTING OF SHORT AND LONG TERM GOALS, WHICH WE DID.
NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE. SO IN JANUARY OF 2019, WE HELD OUR FIRST DALLAS
[00:10:01]
COLLEGE LATINO CONVENING AT THE LATINO CULTURAL CENTER.WE HAVE PARTICIPATION FROM TRUSTEE MONICA LIRA BRAVO, DR.
MAY DR. [INAUDIBLE] AND COLLEGE PRESIDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF, AND A SPECIAL GUEST THAT EVENING, DEBORAH SANTIAGO, CO-FOUNDER OF EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION, EL CENTRO SPRING 2019 CONVOCATION SPEAKER.
NEXT SLIDE PLEASE. IN OCTOBER 2019 OUR ERG ADELANTE WAS FORMALLY ANNOUNCED OR LAUNCHED AT THE WEST CAMPUS WITH AN AMAZING EVENT, THE WELCOME FOR DR.
BEATRICE JOSEPH, THE NEW MOUNTAINVIEW PRESIDENT, AND THE LAUNCH OF OUR ERG.
WE ALSO GOT INPUT FROM THOSE THAT ATTENDED THE EVENT IN TERMS OF THE NAME OF THE ORGANIZATION ULTIMATELY DECIDING ON THE NAME ADELANTE.
TRUSTEE, DIANA FLORES SPOKE ON BEHALF OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, [INAUDIBLE] AND MOUNTAINVIEW MARIACHI BAND, AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PICTURE ON THE LEFT SIDE AT THE BOTTOM WERE ALSO THERE, AND THEY DID A MARVELOUS JOB OF PRESENTING THEIR MARIACHI MUSIC, IT WAS JUST AN AMAZING EVENT.
SO THE NEXT STEP, IN JULY OF 2020, OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM APPROVED A [INAUDIBLE] OR BYLAW THAT DEFINED GOALS AND OBJECTIVES AND THE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE.
SO THE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE INCLUDES A GROUP OF EXECUTIVE SPONSORS.
DR. BEATRICE JOSEPH,[INAUDIBLE], [INAUDIBLE], ISAAC FAZ, DR.
THE ROLE OF EXECUTIVE SPONSORS IS TO SUPPORT THE MISSION OF THE ORGANIZATION, PROVIDE GUIDANCE, ENSURE ALIGNMENT WITH DALLAS COLLEGE POLICY, ESPECIALLY THE NEW OFFICE OF SOCIAL JUSTICE THAT WAS CREATED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
AND THE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE INCLUDES AN ELECTED INTERIM BOARD OF FIVE OFFICERS, THE INTERIM BOARD PROVIDES DIRECTION AND CONTINUITY OF OUR EFFORTS TO LAUNCH THE ADELANTE ERG . AN ELECTION OF NEW OFFICERS IS PLANNED FOR SPRING OF 2020.
WE WILL THEN TAKE OFFICE IN THE FALL OF 2021.
WE ARE PROUD OF THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE GROUP SO FAR.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO SPRING OF 21 WHEN A NEW ELECTED BOARD IS DECIDED UPON.
WE ARE WE HAVE AN EXCELLENT AND ENTHUSIASTIC LEADERSHIP TEAM.
THOSE EXECUTIVE SPONSORS AND THE ACTUAL LEADERSHIP BOARD, AND THAT IS COMMITTED TO ADVANCING ON THE LONDON AND COLLEGE DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION AGENDA.
SO WE ARE VERY PLEASED WITH THE WORK SO FAR AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE PARTICIPATION OF, YOU THE VIEWERS, THE LATINO COMMUNITY HERE IN DALLAS COLLEGE AND THE ALLIES THAT SUPPORT US AS WELL. AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEXT STEPS IN ENHANCING AND SOLIDIFYING THE LEADERSHIP OF THIS ADELANTE GROUP AND THE AMAZING WORK THAT THEY'RE GOING TO DO MOVING FORWARD WITH THEIR GOALS AND OBJECTIVES THAT THEY HAVE SET.
ADAMES. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ENCOURAGEMENT SINCE DAY ONE AND I WOULD PERSONALLY LIKE TO THANK YOU IN FRONT OF THIS FORUM FOR LETTING ME SHADOW YOU AND YOU HELPING AND MENTORING ME IN MY CAREER.
AND I KNOW THAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO SOME INCREDIBLE FUTURE PROJECTS.
SO THE NEXT PERSON, THE NEXT SLIDE IS ACTUALLY MARISA.
AND SHE ALREADY WENT THROUGH THIS SLIDE.
BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SHOW YOU THE PICTURES OF OUR INTERIM BOARD.
ADAMES EXPLAINED, WE DECIDED TO ELECT AN INTERIM BOARD SO THAT WE COULD GO TO ELECTIONS AND THEN ALL OF US CHOOSE WHO WE WANT US TO LEAD.
AND SO THESE ARE THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE THAT ARE LEADING THE ERG RIGHT NOW.
AND I DO WANT TO ASK YOU TO USE THE Q&A, THE Q&A THAT WE HAVE SET UP.
AND I WANT TO THANK [INAUDIBLE].
THANK YOU SO MUCH. SHE SAYS SHE LIKES TO LISTEN TO SPANISH.
WELL, SO THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENTS.
PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS VIA CHAT SO THAT WE CAN DISCUSS AT THE END OF THIS INCREDIBLE MEETING. SO WITH WITH NO MORE DELAY, I DO WANT TO THANK OUR SPECIAL GUEST CHAIR DIANA FLORES.
YES, IT'S THE NEXT SLIDE. YOU'RE ON YOUR RIGHT.
[00:15:01]
YOU'RE READING MY MIND. PERFECT.AND I WANT TO JUST YOU ALL KNOW WHO DIANA IS.
I MEAN, SHE'S BEEN AROUND HELPING STUDENTS FOR MANY, MANY YEARS.
SHE'S THE LATINA THAT HAS HAD THE LONGEST YEARS BEING ELECTED.
AND I JUST WANT TO SAY HOW I MET DIANA.
I'M ORIGINALLY FROM VENEZUELA, SO I WENT TO THE [INAUDIBLE] IN OAKLAWN AND THERE WAS THIS BIG TABLE WITH ALL THESE HISPANIC WOMEN.
I SAID, OH, I WANT TO SIT THERE.
AND MY SISTER IN LAW KNEW VIOLA WHO WAS THERE, AN ARTIST.
AND SO SHE SAID, HEY, MY MY SISTER IN LAW IS HERE FROM VENEZUELA.
SHE'S VISITING. SHE WANTS TO KNOW YOU GUYS.
AND IT WAS THE HISPANIC WOMEN'S NETWORK OF TEXAS THAT THEY WERE MEETING THERE.
AND WHAT REALLY IMPACTED ME OF HER WAS THE WAY SHE EMPOWERED, YOU KNOW, ALL TYPES OF BUSINESSES IN THE HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, THE GREATER DALLAS HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, AND HOW SHE FELT SO AT EASE AMONG SO MANY MEN THAT WERE DOING BUSINESS.
BUT THEN SHE WAS ALSO VERY APPROACHABLE AND VERY CINQ TO PEOPLE AND LISTENING TO PEOPLE.
IT'S A MIXTURE OF AND SO WITH THAT, I WANT TO WELCOME OUR CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES FOR DALLAS COLLEGE, DIANA FLORES.
WELCOME. THE MICROPHONE IS YOURS.
I FORGOT I WAS MUTED WHEN IS SOME IDEA WE'LL SETTLE UP LATER THAT WHAT I AGREED TO PAY YOU FOR THAT INTRO. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT GENEROUS INTRODUCTION.
ADAMES, YOU KNOW, I'VE TOLD YOU THIS IN PERSON BEFORE, BUT WE'RE REALLY, REALLY GOING TO HAVE A HUGE VOID ONCE YOU GO INTO RETIREMENT.
AND I KNOW IT WON'T BE RETIREMENT TO BE TOTALLY AWAY FROM GIVING UP YOUR EXPERTISE AND YOUR TIME TO GROUPS, ETC.
BUT IT WILL BE RETIREMENT FROM DALLAS COLLEGE.
SO I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT WE'RE NOT THAT MANY MONTHS AWAY FROM WHEN YOU ACTUALLY RETIRE.
BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP, FOR STEPPING FORWARD TO FORM THE ERG AND FOR HOW FAR YOU HELP THEM WITH THE TEAM THAT'S TO COME TOGETHER TO TO BRING US TO THIS POINT.
AND WITH THAT, MARIA SAID SHARE YOUR HERITAGE.
STATES FOR US THAT ARE CHILDREN OF THE 60S AND 70S, IT HAS A POLITICAL CONNOTATION BECAUSE, AS YOU KNOW, THOSE OF US WHO ARE PRIMARILY OF MEXICAN DESCENT IN THE UNITED STATES IS SEPARATE FROM HISTORICAL DISCRIMINATION, PREJUDICE, DISENFRANCHISEMENT, ET CETERA, ET CETERA. SO IN THE 60S AND 70S, THE FEW COLLEGE STUDENTS THAT EXISTED AT THAT TIME ROSE UP AND SAID, OR NOT, A LOT OF PEOPLE DIDN'T IDENTIFY WITH THAT TERM, WHICH IS ALL WELL AND GOOD.
BUT AGAIN, MY HERITAGE IS MEXICAN HERITAGE.
MY FAMILY IS ORIGINAL UNFORTUNATELY, WHEN WE FOUND THAT OUT, I TOLD MY KIDS I ALWAYS KNEW I HAD MONEY.
I JUST DIDN'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS.
WE LOST THE LAND IN THE TEXAS MEXICO WAR AND DIFFERENT REGARDLESS. AND MY GRANDFATHER, I'M SORRY, GREAT GRANDFATHER ACTUALLY FOUGHT IN THE CIVIL WAR, BEING THAT HE LIVED IN BROWNSVILLE.
HE WAS DRAFTED INTO THE CONFEDERATE ARMY, BUT HE DID FIGHT IN THE CIVIL WAR.
SO I'M AND I SAID I'M FROM A TEXAS WAS MEXICO, AND SO WE ARE MANY GENERATIONS BACK WHEN THOSE PEOPLE WHO HAVE RACIST INTENT OR RACIST VIEWS LOOK AT US.
THEY THINK ALL OF US JUST GOT HERE.
AND THAT'S VERY FAR FROM THE TRUTH.
SO WITH THAT [INAUDIBLE] MY SLIDES, PLEASE.
I DON'T SEE THEM. SO I DID A QUICK POWERPOINT, YOU KNOW, I WORK FULL TIME AND I'M IN A MASTER'S PROGRAM, I HAVE TWO MASTER'S CLASSES THIS SEMESTER AND I'M ALSO RUNNING FOR REELECTION.
I USUALLY WHEN I MAKE A PRESENTATION, LIKE TO HAVE DATA.
UNFORTUNATELY, I PUT THIS TOGETHER LIKE BETWEEN 12:30 AND ONE.
[00:20:01]
SO I WASN'T ABLE TO BRING ABOUT ANY DATA.BUT I HAVE ASKED JILL TO SHARE WITH ALL OF YOU A REPORT THAT WAS IN THE BOARD AGENDA.
IT'S THE WORKFORCE DEMOGRAPHICS.
IT'S A REPORT THAT SEVERAL YEARS AGO I ASKED TO BE INCLUDED IN EACH OF OUR MONTHLY BOARD AGENDAS. IT'S THE REPORT THAT UNFORTUNATELY DOES NOT GET MUCH ATTENTION, BUT IT TELLS WHERE WE ARE IN TERMS OF EMPLOYEES OF COLOR IN THE DISTRICT AND WE ARE NOT WHERE WE NEED TO BE. AND THAT'S WHY IT'S SO GOOD THAT THE ADELANTE EMPLOYEE RESOURCE GROUP WAS FORMED, BECAUSE WE REALLY NEED TO IMPROVE OUR NUMBERS IN DALLAS COLLEGE AT ALL LEVELS, ESPECIALLY IN THE ADMINISTRATIVE AND FACULTY LEVELS.
AND THAT'S WHY I LIKE TO HAVE THOSE NUMBERS EVER PRESENT SO PEOPLE REALIZE WE'RE NOT WHERE WE ARE. BUT YOU AS A RESOURCE GROUP, HAVE THE POWER TO BRING ABOUT CHANGE IN THAT AREA THROUGH DIFFERENT WAYS.
NO, I DON'T WANT TO SHOW THAT.
I WANT THEM TO GET THAT REPORT.
NEXT POWERPOINT SLIDE, OK, SO I HOPE ALL OF YOU REALLY HAVE THIS MISSION INGRAINED IN YOU THAT YOU LIVE AND BREATHE THIS MISSION BECAUSE IT IS VERY, VERY POWERFUL.
I KNOW THAT IT IS POWERFUL FOR ME AND IT DRIVES EVERYTHING THAT I DO AS A TRUSTEE AND EVERYTHING THAT I DO IN THE COMMUNITY.
THE DALLAS COLLEGE MISSION IS TO TRANSFORM LIVES AND COMMUNITIES THROUGH HIGHER EDUCATION. AND THOSE OF YOU WHO WORK IN DALLAS COLLEGE WHO ARE PART OF A HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM, YOU'RE A PART OF SOMETHING THAT IS BIGGER THAN YOURSELF.
ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT YOU'RE PART OF SOMETHING THAT IS BIGGER THAN YOURSELVES, YOU HAVE THE POWER, YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO IMPACT THOSE THAT ARE IN THE POSITION WHERE YOU ONCE WERE IN TERMS OF GETTING THEIR COLLEGE EDUCATION.
SO I TALKED ABOUT THE WORKFORCE DEMOGRAPHICS.
WE ARE NOT WHERE WE WANT TO BE.
BUT WE NEED TO WORK TO GET THERE NEXT SLIDE.
SO IN MY MASTER'S PROGRAM, I CAME ACROSS THIS QUOTE, ONE OF MY PROFESSORS USED IT A FEW WEEKS BACK AND IT REALLY IMPACTED ME BECAUSE DALLAS COLLEGE RIGHT NOW, AS YOU KNOW, IS ALL ABOUT CHANGE.
AND SO THIS GENTLEMAN, WILLIAM POLLARD, WAS A QUAKER MINISTER WHO LIVED BACK IN THE EIGHTEEN HUNDREDS. BUT THIS QUOTE, AS ALL QUOTES DO, TRANSCEND TIME AND AGE.
WITHOUT CHANGE THERE IS NO INNOVATION, CREATIVITY OR INCENTIVE FOR IMPROVEMENT.
THOSE WHO INITIATE CHANGE WILL HAVE A BETTER OPPORTUNITY TO MANAGE THE CHANGE THAT IS INEVITABLE. SO I HOPE YOU WILL REMEMBER THAT, TOO.
WE NEED ALL OF YOUR ENERGIES TO HELP US BRING ABOUT THE CHANGE, TO FULFILL OUR MISSION AND ALSO TO FULFILL OUR MISSION FOR LATINO STUDENTS AND FOR OUR PROFESSIONALS AND OUR SUPPORT STAFF. YOU ARE THE CHANGE, WHICH I'M GOING TO USE THAT IN JUST A MOMENT.
YOU CAN BE THE CHANGE THAT WE WANT TO SEE.
AND ALWAYS BELIEVE IN YOURSELF, BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.
THAT YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH WHAT WE NEED TO ACCOMPLISH TO ELEVATE ALL OF OUR COMMUNITY.
AND THEN I HEARD [INAUDIBLE] YESTERDAY, PRESENT TO THE BOARD ABOUT THE ERGS, SO THE WAY I SEE IT, THE ERGS ARE ABOUT CHANGE AND HISTORIC CHANGE IN DALLAS COLLEGE.
SO WHEN GEORGE SAID WE DID ABOUT WHEN THE ERGS FIRST FORMED YOU KNOW, YOU FIRST BEGAN TO HEAR THAT TERM, I LOOKED IT UP REAL QUICK BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE BENEFIT OF HIS PRESENTATION AT BETWEEN 12:30 AND ONE WHEN I WAS DOING THIS POWERPOINT.
SO THE ERGS FIRST APPEARED ON THE SCENE IN THE 1960S.
THEY HAVE ROOTS IN THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT.
AND ONE THING THAT WE ALSO ALWAYS HEAR ABOUT THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT AS IT RELATES TO THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN BROTHERS AND SISTERS, BUT RARELY EVER DO WE HEAR ABOUT THE CHICANO CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT OR THE NATIVE AMERICANS, WHICH ALSO AT THAT TIME WERE VERY POLITICALLY ACTIVE AND WERE FORCING TO BRING ABOUT CHANGE.
THAT IS WHERE MANY OF OUR ORGANIZATIONS FORMED.
YOU'VE HEARD OF [INAUDIBLE] YOU HEARD OF [INAUDIBLE], YOU'VE HEARD THEY'VE CHANGED THEIR NAME. THERE'S ANOTHER NATIONAL ORGANIZATION.
BUT SEVERAL OF THE NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS THAT ADVOCATE FOR OUR COMMUNITY FORMED DURING THIS TIME. SO IN ITS 55 YEARS, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT ERGS HAVE FORMED IN DALLAS COLLEGE. AND IT'S FUNNY THAT THEY'VE EXISTED SINCE THE 60S.
BUT HERE WE ARE. FIFTY FIVE YEARS LATER FOR DALLAS COLLEGE.
[00:25:03]
THE YEA R2020, AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME, EVEN THOUGH IT STARTED, HAD ITS GENESIS BACK IN 2018 AS DR.ADAMES WAS SAYING, BUT NOW IT'S FORMALIZED HERE IN 2020.
SO MY QUESTION IS, WHY HADN'T WE FORMED BEFORE? MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE NO ONE ASKED BEFORE, OR MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE NO ONE FELT EMPOWERED ENOUGH TO ASK. FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT DON'T KNOW, I WORKED AT DALLAS COLLEGE.
WHAT WAS THEN THE DCCCD AT THE DISTRICT OFFICE FOR TEN YEARS FROM 1985 TO 1995.
SO I KNOW WHAT THE CULTURE WAS LIKE THEN, AND I THINK THERE'S STILL VESTIGES OF THAT WHERE IF YOU STOOD OUT AND YOU SPOKE IN A WAY THAT WAS DIFFERENT FROM GROUPTHINK, YOU WERE LABELED AND YOU WERE STIGMATIZED.
AND I KNOW THERE'S SOME OF YOU THAT WERE BACK IN THE SYSTEM AT THAT TIME, AND YOU KNOW VERY WELL WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.
I HOPE THAT DOESN'T EXIST TO A LARGE EXTENT NOW, BUT I KIND OF SUSPECT THAT IT DOES.
BUT WE NEED TO CHANGE ALL OF THAT.
WE NEED TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO BE THEIR AUTHENTIC SELVES SO THEY CAN GIVE OF THEIR BEST SELVES TO FULFILL OUR MISSION, WHICH AGAIN IS TO TRANSFORM LIVES AND COMMUNITIES THROUGH HIGHER EDUCATION. NEXT SLIDE.
SO THE ERGS WHILE HAVING ROOTS IN THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT TODAY, THEY SERVE AS POWERFUL RESOURCES FOR FACILITATING DISCUSSIONS AND PROVIDING NETWORKS FOR PROFESSIONALS BASED ON SHARED IDENTITIES, EXPERIENCES AND ALLY SHIP.
SO I HOPE THAT IS WHAT YOU ALL WILL DO WITHIN DALLAS COUNTY COLLEGE, WITHIN DALLAS COLLEGE. YOU ALL NEED TO BE.
WHAT WAS THE WORD TERM THAT I USED APPROPRIATELY BOLD WHEN I MET WITH THE LEADERSHIP GROUP OF ADELANTE. Y'ALL NEED TO BE APPROPRIATELY BOLD IN ADVOCATING FOR THE CHANGE, FOR THE TYPES OF PROGRAMS, THE TYPES OF INITIATIVES WE NEED TO ASSURE THAT MORE OF OUR STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM COLLEGE, FINISH THEIR CERTIFICATES, AND TO ASSURE THAT MORE OF YOU HAVE WHAT YOU NEED TO SCALE UP AS YOU WANT IN THE SYSTEM.
AND IF THERE'S NO PLACE FOR YOU IN THE SYSTEM, HOPEFULLY THAT WILL NOT BE THE CASE.
YOU'RE THE MOST PREPARED TO GO ANYWHERE AND BE MARKETABLE.
SO ERGS HAVE ROOTS IN THE DESIRE TO ADVOCATE FOR EMPLOYEES AND GIVING THEM A SPACE AT WORK TO BE THEIR BEST AUTHENTIC SELVES.
IN OTHER WORDS, NOT BE AFRAID TO SPEAK UP, NOT BE AFRAID.
IF YOU KNOW OF A BETTER STRATEGY THAN WHAT'S BEING DISCUSSED, PUT THAT STRATEGY FORTH.
AND AGAIN, WE NEED TO WHAT THE BOARD DOES AND THOSE THAT HAVE HIGH ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS, DR.
ADAMES, I CAN'T THINK OF ALL OF THE NAMES.
DR. FLINT. YOU ALL NEED TO BE SURE TO ENCOURAGE EMPLOYEES TO BE APPROPRIATE AND TO GIVE UP THEIR BEST IDEAS, THEIR BEST INNOVATIONS, THEIR BEST CREATIVITY TO MAKE SURE THAT WE FULFILL OUR MISSION INSTEAD OF WHAT HAS TYPICALLY EXISTED, WHICH IS IF YOU SAY SOMETHING DIFFERENT, RADICALLY DIFFERENT FROM WHAT'S OUT THERE, YOU'RE STIGMATIZED.
AGAIN, I'M TALKING ABOUT WHEN I WAS BACK IN THE DISTRICT.
I HOPE THAT DOESN'T STILL EXIST.
BUT IF IT DOES, WE NEED TO BREAK THROUGH THAT BECAUSE IT'S THROUGH THE BEST THINKING, THE DIFFERENT VOICES THAT WE COME UP WITH THE BEST STRATEGIES.
THAT IS PROVEN BY RESEARCH, AS I HAVE LEARNED IN MY MASTER OF SCIENCE IN PUBLIC LEADERSHIP. SO BEST PRACTICES, [INAUDIBLE] MADE UP, MADE A PRESENTATION TO THE BOARD BACK IN, I THINK IT WAS 2019 ON DIVERSITY.
AND THAT'S WHEN THEY SAID ERGS ARE ONE OF THE BEST PRACTICES IN BUSINESS.
AND WHEN I HEARD THAT, THAT'S WHEN I TOLD THE CHANCELLOR, WE NEED TO GO DOWN THIS ROAD AND IT TOOK A BIT TO GET HERE, BUT HERE WE ARE.
SO ERGS ARE INTEGRATED INTO BUSINESS STRATEGIES AS IMPERATIVES, AND THAT'S MORE SO RIGHT NOW IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR THAN IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR.
BUT MY VISION IS THAT DALLAS COLLEGE WILL SET THE STANDARD IN DIVERSITY FOR HOW IT'S DONE RIGHT, SO THAT EVERYBODY CAN BE THEIR AUTHENTIC SELVES AND SO THAT EVERYBODY CAN LIVE UP TO THEIR POTENTIAL AND FUNCTION AT THE BEST LEVEL POSSIBLE FOR THEMSELVES, BUT ALSO AS IMPORTANT FOR THE INSTITUTION.
AND SO THIS LAST LITTLE NUGGET, I GOT IT FROM DIVERSITY INC.
OK, SO I HAD SAID I HAD SAID EARLIER THAT YOU WERE PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER THAN YOURSELF.
AS WE ALL KNOW, WE HAVE DEFICIENCIES IN OUR COMMUNITY AS A GROUP, WHETHER YOU IDENTIFY AS
[00:30:07]
LATINO, HISPANIC, [INAUDIBLE], ETC., ESPECIALLY THOSE THAT HAVE IMMIGRATED AND MAYBE HAVE COME IN ON AN UNDOCUMENTED STATUS.THOSE OF US THAT WERE BORN HERE THAT SUFFERED HISTORIC DISENFRANCHISEMENT, DISCRIMINATION, PREJUDICE.
IT WAS NOT UNTIL WORLD WAR TWO THAT WE WERE ABLE TO REALLY GO TO COLLEGE BECAUSE OF OUR SOLDIERS AND AT THAT IT WAS VERY LIMITED NUMBERS THAT WE WERE ABLE TO GET THROUGH.
IT WAS NOT UNTIL THE CHICANO CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT OF THE 60S AND 70S THAT WE WERE ABLE TO THEN BEGIN IN LARGER NUMBERS, BUT STILL NOT LARGE ENOUGH TO GO TO COLLEGE.
IT IS NOW THAT THAT IS HAPPENING.
SO EDUCATION ALLEVIATE POVERTY.
ALL OF YOU WHO ARE HERE ARE LIVING PROOF OF THAT.
IF IT WERE NOT FOR YOUR EDUCATION, YOU PROBABLY WOULD NOT HAVE YOUR POSITION.
SO EDUCATION ALLEVIATES POVERTY.
THAT IS WHY WE NEED TO BE ABOUT MAKING SURE THAT AS MANY OF OUR STUDENTS TRANSITION OUT SUCCESSFULLY AS POSSIBLE, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO ARE FIRST GENERATION STUDENTS, WE NEED TO BREAK THROUGH THOSE CYCLES OF GENERATIONAL POVERTY.
TOO MANY OF US, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO DO NOT COME FROM COLLEGE EDUCATED FAMILIES, LIVE IN POVERTY OR IN LOW INCOME FAMILIES.
AS I ALREADY STATED, YOU ELEVATED YOURSELF THROUGH EDUCATION.
YOU ARE LIVING TESTAMENT TO EDUCATION, ALLEVIATING POVERTY.
SO YOU ARE PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER THAN YOURSELF.
HELP OTHERS MAKE IT OUT, HELP OTHERS ELEVATE THEMSELVES.
AGAIN, YOU ARE PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER THAN YOURSELF.
OK, SO ANY WAY YOU LOOK, YEAH, PICK YOUR CAUSE.
ANY WAY YOU LOOK, AND I HEARD A FRIEND OF MINE SAY THIS ONE TIME AND IT'S SO VERY TRUE.
PICK YOUR CAUSE, EDUCATION, HEALTH, PRIVATE SECTOR, WHEREVER YOU LOOK, WE ARE IN DEFICIENCY STATUS, THERE'S NOT ENOUGH OF US.
SO WHETHER IT BE A COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION, A SCHOOL, ETC., THEY NEED EDUCATED PEOPLE.
TO BE VOLUNTEERS, TO HELP OUT, TO BE MENTORS, ET CETERA, ET CETERA, I KNOW DALLAS COLLEGE. I DON'T KNOW IF THEY STILL DO, I GUESS I'LL HAVE TO ASK, BUT, YOU KNOW, WE USED TO HAVE WELLNESS TIME.
WELL, WE NEED TO ADVOCATE FOR COMMUNITY TIME, YOU KNOW, SO THAT YOU HAVE THAT ONE HOUR FREE A WEEK THAT YOU CAN BE A MENTOR.
YOU HAVE THAT ONE HOUR A WEEK THAT YOU CAN PROVIDE YOUR EXPERTISE TO A COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION. WE NEED THAT.
YOU KNOW, THAT SAYING ABOUT REACH BACK TO GIVE BACK, ETC..
WE ALSO NEED ELECTED LEADERS WHO UNDERSTAND OUR COMMUNITY, ENABLE POLICIES, PROGRAMS AND FUNDING TO MEET OUR NEEDS.
AND ISAAC'S GOING TO TALK ABOUT THIS IN A MINUTE, BUT ABOUT.
THAT'S HOW YOU GET TO EXERCISE YOUR VOICE AND YOUR TAX DOLLARS, HOW IT'S BEING USED IS THROUGH THE POWER OF THE VOTE.
AS I SAID, YOU ARE BIGGER THAN YOURSELF.
YEAH, YOU ARE BIGGER THAN YOURSELVES.
IN OTHER WORDS, YOU KNOW WHAT I'VE ALREADY SAID THIS IS ABOUT MORE THAN JUST YOU.
AND I HOPE YOU WILL SEE IT THAT WAY THROUGH MY COURSE OF WORKING IN THE COMMUNITY.
AS MARIA SAID, I MET HER THROUGH HWMP.
I'M VERY, VERY IMPRESSED BY MARIA AND HER ABILITIES, HER KNOWLEDGE.
I HOPE THAT SHE CAN ELEVATE HERSELF.
I KNOW HER. THE HISPANIC WOMEN'S NETWORK OF TEXAS, WHEN I WAS WORKING THE STARS ON THE RISE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM WHEN SHE WAS DEAN AT A&M COMMERCE, THE PASSION SHE HAD FOR STUDENTS AND HOW SHE MADE SURE THAT SCHOLARSHIP TO A&M COMMERCE WERE AVAILABLE TO THE CHAMBERS STARS ON THE RISE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM THROUGH THE MASTER OF SCIENCE AND PUBLIC LEADERSHIP PROGRAM, I'VE GOTTEN TO MEET [INAUDIBLE], [INAUDIBLE], [INAUDIBLE], WHO ARE ALSO YOUNG PROFESSIONALS THAT HAVE PREPARED THEMSELVES.
ALL OF THESE PEOPLE THAT I'VE NAMED HAD THE PASSION TO SERVE, AND I HOPE ALL OF THEM WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SCALE UP WITHIN OUR SYSTEM BECAUSE WE NEED PEOPLE JUST LIKE THEM WITH THAT PASSION, WITH THAT ENERGY, WITH NOT FORGETTING HOW THEY GOT TO WHERE THEY ARE AND STILL WANTING TO MAKE AN IMPACT ON THOSE THAT ARE COMING BEHIND.
SO, AGAIN, YOU ARE THIS, YOU ARE INVOLVED IN SOMETHING THAT IS BIGGER THAN YOURSELF.
I HOPE YOU ARE COMMITTED TO BEING CHANGE AGENTS FOR THE GOOD.
YOU ARE COMMITTED TO HELPING TO TRANSFORM LIVES AND COMMUNITIES THROUGH HIGHER EDUCATION BECAUSE YOU ARE IN THE POSITION TO DO THAT.
USE THE ERG AS YOUR VEHICLE TO BE ABLE TO IMPACT WHAT WE THE INSTITUTION IS DOING.
NEXT SLIDE. SO THIS IS A FAVORITE
[00:35:09]
VERSE OF MINE WHEN I FIRST HEARD IT.THEY PRESENTED IT AS A MEXICAN PROVERB, BUT I LOOKED IT UP FURTHER AND IT'S NOT.
IT WAS SAID BY A GREEK POET MANY CENTURIES AGO.
THEY DIDN'T KNOW WE WERE SEEDS.
SO YOUR RESPONSIBILITY? MY RESPONSIBILITY IS TO BLOSSOM, BLOOM, FLOURISH SO THAT WE CAN DO THE BEST WE CAN, NOT ONLY FOR OURSELVES, FOR OUR FAMILIES, BUT OUR COMMUNITY AT LARGE.
I HOPE YOU TAKE ALL OF THAT TO HEART.
I HOPE YOU DON'T FEEL THAT THE INSTITUTION IS A BARRIER TO YOU.
DALLAS COLLEGE. THE WAY WE ARE NOW STRUCTURED IS ALL ABOUT REMOVING BARRIERS FOR STUDENTS. THAT ERGS CAN BE A VEHICLE TO REMOVE BARRIERS FOR INDIVIDUAL EMPLOYEES TO BE ABLE TO SCALE UP.
BUT YOU ALSO HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY WHENEVER DALLAS COLLEGE OFFERS TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES, REDUCED TUITION OPPORTUNITIES IN AN AREA WHERE YOU NEED TO DEVELOP SKILLS, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT, BE YOUR BEST SELF THROUGH EDUCATION, AND THEN THE OTHERS SHOULD FOLLOW, BE YOUR BEST SELF IN TERMS OF HOW YOU INTERACT WITH OTHERS, YOU COMMUNICATE WITH OTHERS, ETC., ETC..
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THANK YOU SO MUCH CHAIR DIANA FLORES.
I LOVE THAT PHRASE BLOSSOM BLOOM FLOURISH, AND I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO QUOTE HERE, SOMETHING, I THINK ALL OF US, WE HAVE DIFFERENT [INAUDIBLE] AND SOMETIMES WE'VE BEEN CATEGORIZED AS WEIRD.
I REMEMBER MY CHILDREN, THEY CAME TO THE UNITED STATES AND THEY WERE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND THEY SAID, MOM WAS SO WEIRD.
YOU KNOW, WE LOOK WHITE, BUT WE'RE NOT WHITE.
WE'RE HISPANIC, BUT WE'RE NOT HISPANIC FROM MEXICO.
AND I SAID, YOU KNOW, I FOUND THIS THE SLOGAN THAT I REALLY LIKE THAT SAYS, I AM NOT WEIRD. I AM A LIMITED EDITION.
SO EACH OF YOU ARE A LIMITED EDITION.
AND NOW I WANT TO INTRODUCE YOU ISAAC FAZ.
AND AS WELL, HE HAS A VERY IMPORTANT ROLE GOING TO AUSTIN, MAKING SURE THAT ALL THE LAWS THAT ARE APPROVED WE'RE ALIGNED AND WHATNOT.
BUT MY CONTACT WITH ISAAC WAS GREAT BECAUSE HE CAME TO OUR COLLEGE WITH SOMEBODY THAT WORKED WITH HIM, WITH MARTA, AND THEY SPOKE ABOUT VOTING AND THE IMPORTANCE OF VOTING.
AND I AM A GOVERNMENT INSTRUCTOR, SO ANYBODY THAT SPEAKS ABOUT VOTING IS MY BFF.
SO THANK YOU SO MUCH ISAAC FOR BEING HERE AND GIVING US THIS IMPORTANT MESSAGE, ESPECIALLY IN THE TIMES THAT WE ARE NOW.
I ALWAYS TELL MY STUDENTS DECISIONS ARE BEING MADE EVERY SINGLE DAY.
IF YOU PARTICIPATE OR YOU DON'T PARTICIPATE THE DECISION, BUT IT'S IMPORTANT TO HAVE A VOICE AND VOTING IS THE FIRST STEP TO BECOMING A CITIZEN.
SO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE ISAAC FAZ.
THE FLOOR IS YOURS. THANK YOU, MARIA, SO MUCH.
I'LL MAKE SURE I REMEMBER THAT.
THANK YOU AND THANK YOU CHAIR FLORES, FOR SUCH WONDERFUL COMMENTS AND TALKING ABOUT WHAT WE CAN DO AND PICKING A CAUSE.
I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT FOR ALL OF US TO FIND A CAUSE.
AND I THINK MINE WAS REALLY TO TO BE INVOLVED IN GOVERNMENT RELATIONS BECAUSE I THINK OF THE IMPACT POLICIES REALLY CHANGE SORT OF OUTCOMES THAT WAY AS WELL.
THANK YOU FOR THE INVITATION TO BE HERE.
AND YES, I AM LATINO, HISPANIC, MEXICAN-AMERICAN.
CHOOSE A TERM THAT YOU PREFER.
MY DAD IS FROM THE STATE OF [INAUDIBLE] IN MEXICO AND MY MOM'S FROM PUEBLA.
AND I WAS BORN HERE AND GREW UP SPEAKING SPANISH AT HOME AND HOPING TO DO THE SAME WITH MY CHILDREN. SO LET ME SET THE TABLE HERE REALLY QUICKLY.
I WANT TO START OUT BY SHARING SOME NATIONAL DATA, SOME STATE DATA AND THEN SOME IMPORTANT DATES AND THEN WHAT WE'RE DOING AT DALLAS COLLEGE DURING THIS ELECTION SEASON.
SO FIRST, I KNOW IT SOUNDS LIKE A BROKEN RECORD AND A CLICHE, BUT THIS IS AN IMPORTANT ELECTION. AND I'LL SAY IT AGAIN, THIS IS AN IMPORTANT ELECTION AND IT'S IMPORTANT IN MANY WAYS FROM A NATIONAL PERSPECTIVE.
OUR NEXT PRESIDENT WILL DETERMINE HOW WE CONTINUE TO FACE NOT ONLY THIS PANDEMIC, BUT HOW WE GET OUR ECONOMY BACK ON TRACK.
HE WILL SET THE TONE, HOW WE TREAT EACH OTHER, AND HE WILL REPRESENT ALL OF US TO THE REST OF THE WORLD FROM TRADE POLICY TO ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES.
SO AS WE KNOW, IN 2020, HISPANICS FOR THE FIRST TIME WILL MAKE UP THE LARGEST MINORITY
[00:40:02]
VOTING BLOCK. LET ME REPEAT THAT ONE MORE TIME.IN 2020, LATINOS FOR THE FIRST TIME WILL MAKE UP THE LARGEST MINORITY VOTING BLOCK BY ELECTION DAY, WHICH IS NOVEMBER 3RD.
THE PEW RESEARCH CENTER STATES THAT AN ESTIMATED THIRTY TWO MILLION HISPANICS WILL BE ELIGIBLE TO CAST A BALLOT IN THE ELECTION.
SO WE TAKE A LOOK AT THAT A LITTLE BIT.
IN ALL 50 STATES, BETWEEN 2000 AND 2018 HISPANIC VOTERS MADE UP THE LARGEST SHARE OF THE ELECTORATE IN EVERY STATE.
AND SPECIFICALLY, THESE GAINS ARE LARGE IN SOUTHWESTERN STATES.
NEVADA, CALIFORNIA AND TEXAS HAVE SEEN THE RAPID GROWTH IN THE HISPANIC SHARE OF THE ELECTORATE OVER THE LAST 18 YEAR PERIOD, AS I LIKE TO SAY, WE HAVE THE NUMBERS. WE JUST GOT TO GET OUT AND VOTE.
SO FROM A STATE PERSPECTIVE, WE'VE ALSO SEEN GROWTH ACROSS THE STATE IN OUR LATINX COMMUNITIES. SO THE CENSUS IS CARRIED OUT PROPERTY TEXAS WILL POST A HUGE POPULATION GAIN SINCE 2010 WITH MORE THAN THREE POINT EIGHT MILLION NEW RESIDENTS.
AND ACCORDING TO THE CENSUS BUREAU, THOSE ESTIMATES INDICATE HISPANICS WILL ACCOUNT FOR MORE THAN HALF OF THAT GROWTH.
SO WE'RE GROWING IN LARGE NUMBERS.
AND IF WE DO THINGS RIGHT, WE'RE GOING TO SEE POSSIBLY THREE ADDITIONAL CONGRESSIONAL SEATS IN THE STATE OF TEXAS.
AND WE KNOW THAT ALMOST 50 PERCENT OF LATINOS LIVE IN FIVE BIG URBAN COUNTIES.
SO IF WE DO THE MATH, WE KNOW THAT LATINOS SHOULD BE ABLE TO ELECT ADDITIONAL MEMBERS OF CONGRESS FROM WITHIN THE LATINO COMMUNITIES BECAUSE WE HAVE THOSE NUMBERS.
I ALSO WANT TO SAY THAT THE ANNUAL GROWTH OF HISPANIC RESIDENTS HAS OUTPACED THE COMBINED GROWTH AMONG WHITE, BLACK AND ASIAN RESIDENTS EVERY YEAR SINCE 2010, AND THAT'S A PRETTY BIG NUMBER. SO ANOTHER NUMBER I WANT TO SHARE IS LATINOS ACCOUNT FOR 30 PERCENT OF THE ELIGIBLE VOTERS POPULATION IN TEXAS.
SO 30 PERCENT OF THE LATINOS OUT THERE CAN VOTE.
WE'RE THE SECOND LARGEST BEHIND NON HISPANIC WHITE.
THAT'S AGAIN, ACCORDING TO THE PEW RESEARCH CENTER.
SO WHAT DOES THAT TRANSLATE INTO NUMBERS? WE HAVE NUMBERS AGAIN, BUT BEFORE WE CELEBRATE THE NUMBERS, LET ME SAY THAT DEMOGRAPHICS DO NOT NECESSARILY LEAD TO VOTES. THOSE ARE TWO DIFFERENT STORIES, TWO DIFFERENT ISSUES THAT WE HAVE TO FOCUS ON.
I HAVE A SLIDE THAT I WANT TO SHARE WITH EVERYONE TO MAKE SURE WE'RE SORT OF REMEMBERING WHAT'S HAPPENING. FIRST AND FOREMOST, THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER TO VOTE JUST PAST.
BUT YOU CAN STILL CHECK THE YOUR ELIGIBILITY TO MAKE SURE YOU'RE REGISTERED TO VOTE BY VISITING EITHER THE SECRETARY OF STATE'S WEBSITE OR DALLAS COUNTY.
WE HAVE THOSE HERE NOW ON THE SCREEN.
ALSO, WHAT WE'LL DO IS YOU CAN HAVE ACCESS TO THE SHAREPOINT I BELIEVE WE'RE GOING TO PUT ALL THIS INFORMATION ON THE ADELANTE SHAREPOINT AS WELL TO GO BACK AND CLICK ON SOME OF THOSE LINKS SO THAT WE KNOW TO WE'RE WORRIED ABOUT THOSE LONG SORT OF WEBSITE ADDRESSES DOWN. ALSO, IF YOU MOVE TO THE COUNTY, MAKE SURE THAT YOU UPDATE YOUR REGISTRATION.
IF YOU DIDN'T, IT'S NOT A PROBLEM.
IT JUST MAKES IT EASIER IF YOU DO WHAT YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO CHANGE YOUR REGISTRATION ADDRESS ANY TIME YOU MOVE WITHIN THE COUNTY.
YOU'RE NOT REGISTERING FOR THE FIRST TIME OR A NEW TIME, YOU'RE JUST UPDATING YOUR ADDRESS. SO THAT'S ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO DO.
ALSO HERE ARE THE IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER OCTOBER 13TH THROUGH THE 30TH IS EARLY VOTING. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? THAT MEANS THAT BETWEEN THOSE WINDOWS, YOU CAN VOTE ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTY, AS IN MOST TEXAS COUNTIES, YOU CAN VOTE AT ANY LOCATION.
AND MOST POLLING LOCATIONS ARE OPEN BETWEEN 7:00 A.M.
ALSO, WHAT'S IMPORTANT TO NOTE IS GENERALLY VOTING THAT THEY'RE GOING TO BE TWO SATURDAYS AND TWO SUNDAYS THAT FALL WITHIN THAT WINDOW.
AND ON THOSE SATURDAYS THAT'S OPEN FROM SEVEN TO SEVEN AND ON SUNDAYS IS GOING TO BE OPEN FROM ONE TO SIX.
THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO SHARE THAT WITH YOUR FAMILY, WITH YOUR FRIENDS, TO MAKE SURE WE'RE VOTING EARLY, BECAUSE AS WE KNOW, THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF CHALLENGES, A LOT OF POTENTIAL ISSUES CAN ARISE.
SO MAKE A PLAN, TRY TO VOTE EARLY.
WE HAVE AN EXTRA WEEK THIS YEAR TO VOTE EARLY.
SO IT'S IMPORTANT TO MAKE A PLAN TO GO OUT AND VOTE.
ALSO IN DALLAS COUNTY, THE GREAT THING ABOUT ELECTION DAY, WHICH IS NOVEMBER 3RD, A TUESDAY IN DALLAS COUNTY, SPECIFICALLY, YOU CAN STILL VOTE AT ANY LOCATION OF THE COUNTY.
DALLAS COUNTY IMPLEMENTED THIS INITIATIVE CALLED VOTING CENTERS.
SO THAT MEANS EVEN IF I LIVE IN OAK CLIFF AND I'M REGISTERED TO VOTE [INAUDIBLE] TO VOTE ON ELECTION DAY, IF I HAPPEN TO BE SOMEWHERE IN NORTH DALLAS OR I HAPPEN TO BE SOMEWHERE IN THE WEST DALLAS OR EAST DALLAS, I CAN STILL VOTE ON ELECTION DAY AT ANY VOTING CENTER.
I DO NOT HAVE TO VOTE AT MY PRECINCT, WHICH MANY OF US ARE USED TO IN THE PAST.
SO PLEASE MAKE A NOTE OF THAT SO YOU CAN SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS, BECAUSE SOMETIMES WE'RE RUNNING ERRANDS OR PICKING UP KIDS FROM SCHOOL.
SOMETHING HAPPENS YOU NEVER KNOW.
SO ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT DURING EARLY VOTING YOU CAN VOTE AT ANY LOCATION AND ON ELECTION DAY IN DALLAS COUNTY, YOU CAN VOTE AT ANY ELECTION DAY TO FIND OUT IF YOU LIVE IN TARRANT COUNTY, DENTON COUNTY.
I SUGGEST YOU VISIT THE SECRETARY OF STATE WEBSITE.
[00:45:01]
YOU HAVE ALL THE INFORMATION THERE AS WELL.AND I THINK THAT'S THE LAST SLIDE, AND I'M NOT SURE IF THAT'S THE ONLY ONE, BUT WE DO HAVE ONE MORE THING WHERE I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU.
THERE IT IS. THE NUMBERS ARE THERE.
LIKE I SAID, WHAT ABOUT ALL THE INFORMATION ON THE ADELANTE PAGE.
BUT ALSO, I WANT TO SHARE PLEASE REMEMBER, THESE ARE THE TYPES OF IDEAS THAT YOU NEED WHEN YOU GO VOTE. IT'S IMPORTANT THAT YOU TAKE THAT WITH YOU.
SO THAT WAY YOU CAN ENSURE THAT YOU CAST YOUR BALLOT.
ONE THING I WANT TO SHARE IS THAT SOMETIMES PEOPLE SAY, WELL, DO OUR VOTES REALLY COUNT? AM I MAKING A DIFFERENCE? ABSOLUTELY, WE'RE MAKING A DIFFERENCE.
AND I ALWAYS LIKE TO SHARE A COUPLE OF EXAMPLES.
SO IN 2018, WHICH IS THE LAST BIG ELECTION THAT WE HAD IN DALLAS COUNTY, WE SAW STATE HOUSE RACES DECIDED BY 220 VOTES IN DALLAS COUNTY.
IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, I ALWAYS LIKE TO JOKE AROUND AND I ALWAYS SAY THAT'S [INAUDIBLE] YOU KNOW THAT WE CAN REGISTER PEOPLE.
WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN ONE STATE HOUSE RACE BECAUSE THATS 220 VOTES.
AND THE LAST THING I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU IS SOMETHING THAT WE'RE DOING AT DALLAS COLLEGE. IF YOU GO TO OUR WEBSITE, THE DCCCD.EDU/VOTES YOU'LL SEE THAT ON OUR PAGE THAT WE HAVE INFORMATION AGAIN THAT YOU'VE SEEN ON THIS ON THIS SLIDE HANDOUT HERE AS WELL.
WE HAVE INFORMATION ON VOTER GUIDES WHO TO CONTACT THAT THE SECRETARY OF STATE'S OFFICE.
IF YOU HAVE YOU LIVE IN A DIFFERENT COUNTY, WHO TO CONTACT DALLAS COUNTY WITH RESPECT TO NUMBERS, PHONE NUMBERS, THINGS LIKE THAT, ALL KINDS OF INFORMATION YOU CAN FIND ON OUR WEBSITE. SO PLEASE VISIT THAT.
AND IF YOU DON'T FIND INFORMATION THAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR, ALWAYS FEEL FREE TO REACH OUT TO US. YOU CAN REACH OUT TO ME.
SINCE THIS IS THE LATINO ERG, YOU CAN FIND ME ON OUR ON OUR SORT OF OUTLOOK.
SURPRISINGLY, THERE'S A FEW MORE FAZ IN DALLAS COLLEGE THEN I THOUGHT THERE WOULD BE.
BUT I'M ISAAC FAZ, SO PLEASE FEEL FREE TO REACH OUT TO ME IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS THAT I'M ALWAYS HAPPY TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS.
AND FINALLY, THE LAST THING I WANT TO SHARE IS THAT EVERY COLLEGE, EVERY CAMPUS, THE DALLAS COLLEGE, IS GOING TO BE A VOTING LOCATION DURING EARLY VOTING AND ON ELECTION DAY.
SO IT MAKES IT EASY. IF YOU'RE AT THE CAMPUS, STOP BY, GO VOTE.
IF YOU'RE DRIVING BY ANOTHER CAMPUS, STOP BY, GO VOTE EVERY CAMPUS, EARLY VOTING AND ELECTION DAY WILL BE AN EARLY VOTING SITE AND ELECTION DAY SITE.
SO PLEASE TAKE THE TIME, STOP VOTE, BE HEARD AND LET'S BE THE CHANGE THAT WE ALL WANT TO SEE. I'M HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS [INAUDIBLE] TO BE HERE AND LOOK FORWARD TO THE CONVERSATION.
AND WE HAVE SOME QUESTIONS OVER HERE, SO I WANT TO FIRST TALK ABOUT [INAUDIBLE] THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR COMMENT.
HER COMMENT HAS TO DO AND I TOOK SOME NOTES HERE THAT, YOU KNOW, SOMETIMES SHE DOESN'T FEEL CONFIDENT BECAUSE SHE'S LABIALIZED AS.
YEAH, MAYBE SOMEBODY WHO'S A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT AND SHE THINKS THIS HISPANIC LATIN STUDENTS AND EMPLOYEES HAS TO BE NOT STIGMATIZED ANYMORE.
AND I ALWAYS WHEN I TELL MY CHILDREN AND [INAUDIBLE] DIVERSITY AND AND THE DIFFERENCES IN US IS WHAT COMPLIMENTS US AND MAKES US BETTER.
AND SOMETIMES WE HAVE TO LOOK AT NATURE.
IF ANYBODY HAS DONE ANY GARDENING, YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO HAVE PLANTS IN THE SHADE.
YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE PEAS AND THE CORN.
AND IF YOU'VE EVER DONE, IT'S THE IT'S THE DIVERSITY OF ALL THE DIFFERENT SPECIES IN A GARDEN THAT MAKES IT BEAUTIFUL AND MAKES IT HEALTHY.
AND I WANT TO TELL [INAUDIBLE] THAT NOW, ALL OF OUR COLLEAGUES ARE HISPANIC SERVING INSTITUTIONS, THE LAST ONE TO BECOME AN HISPANIC SERVING INSTITUTION IN CEDAR VALLEY.
WE HAVE A LOT OF STUDENTS AND WE NEED AS EMPLOYEES AND ADMINISTRATORS TO EMBRACE OUR HISPANIC ROOTS AND TO GUIDE THOSE STUDENTS INTO THEIR SUCCESS AND PATH.
WE NEED TO HELP TRANSFORM THEIR LIVES.
SO THANK YOU SO MUCH, [INAUDIBLE], FOR THAT FOR THAT COMMENT.
AND I ALWAYS HEAR MY MOTHER AND HE IN THE CLASSROOM SPEAKS ABOUT THE HISTORY.
SO IT'S SO IMPORTANT TO NOT FORGET HISTORY.
CHAIR FLORES IF YOU'D LIKE TO MAKE A COMMENT OF HOW TO INCORPORATE THAT HISTORY INTO EVERYTHING WE DO.
WE NEED TO HAVE CULTURAL STUDIES IN OUR COLLEGES WHERE WE LEARN OUR HISTORY
[00:50:02]
AND NOT NOW THAT WE HAVE.WHEN I WAS GROWING UP, I WOULD SAY 80, 90 PERCENT OF THE PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY WHO ARE OR HISPANIC ORIGIN OR LATINO ORIGIN WERE MEXICAN ORIGIN, MEXICAN-AMERICAN.
NOW, THAT'S CHANGED QUITE A BIT.
WE HAVE FROM ALL COUNTRIES [INAUDIBLE] DR.
SO WE REALLY NEED TO ADVOCATE IN ALL OF OUR COLLEGES.
[INAUDIBLE], WHAT'S YOUR LAST NAME? DR. FLOYD, DR.
FLOYD WOULD REALLY NEED TO ADVOCATE FOR CULTURAL STUDIES.
IF WE'RE GOING TO BE INTENTIONAL ABOUT DIVERSITY, INCLUSION AND EQUITY, IT COMES ABOUT THROUGH STUDY, THROUGH EDUCATION, NOT JUST IT'S JUST NOT JUST GOING TO HAPPEN.
SO, ONE, WE NEED TO ADVOCATE FOR THAT.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT HELPED ME THE MOST IN MY PROFESSIONAL.
THE WORLD WAS TO TAKE A CLASS IN INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS SO THAT YOU KNOW HOW TO APPROPRIATELY MAKE YOUR POINT KNOWN, MY TENDENCY WAS TO BE AGGRESSIVE.
AND WHEN I SPOKE TO OTHERS AND THAT'LL GET YOU NOWHERE FAST.
THE INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS COURSE TAUGHT ME HOW TO BE ASSERTIVE IN MY COMMUNICATION. AND I'M SORRY TO HEAR THAT WE'RE STILL BEING STIGMATIZED.
YOU THE ERG MEMBERS THAT YOUR LEADERSHIP HAVE IT IN YOUR POWER TO SET A NEW DYNAMIC, A NEW PARADIGM WHERE PEOPLE ARE FREE TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES APPROPRIATELY AND BE VALUED.
DON'T BE STIGMATIZED BECAUSE OF IT, REMEMBER, AND IT'S BECAUSE OF THE DIVERSITY OF VOICES THAT WE COME UP WITH THE BEST, THE BEST PROCESSES, THE BEST PROGRAMS, THE BEST INITIATIVES. AND AS I SAID EARLIER, THAT IS PROVEN BY RESEARCH.
TOO OFTEN IN HIGHER ED, WE PLAY THE SAFE GAME.
WE DON'T WANT TO STAND OUT BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT TO BE LABELED AND WE DON'T WANT TO BE BLACKBALLED, ET CETERA, ET CETERA.
IT GOT US AN ORGANIZATION THAT HAD WAS BEING FOSSILIZED, SO TO SPEAK, WE WEREN'T GETTING THE NUMBERS OF STUDENTS OUT SUCCESSFULLY THAT WE NEEDED TO TO REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR LIVES, TO REALLY FULFILL OUR MISSION AND TO MAKE AN IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY.
WE NEED TO BE ABOUT CHANGE, BUT FOCUS, CHANGE, DELIBERATE CHANGE, DATA BASED CHANGE.
WE NEED TO BE ABOUT CHANGE FOR EMPLOYEES, TOO.
SO ERG ADELANTE, ADELANTE IN THAT AREA.
AND I WANT TO THANK [INAUDIBLE] FOR HER POSITIVE COMMENTS, AND SHE'S SHE SAYS, I'M JOINING THIS ORGANIZATION, [INAUDIBLE] AND THEN WE ALSO HAVE A REALLY GOOD COMMENT ALSO FROM MARTA. SHE'S ACTUALLY ASKING A QUESTION.
AND I HAVE VERY GOOD NEWS FOR YOU MARTA, ERG IS THE PLACE TO ASK FOR THIS.
AND [INAUDIBLE] AND MYSELF, WE WERE THE FACILITATORS OF A GROUP OF 20 PLUS HISPANIC MENTORS. AND WE'RE GOING TO BE SETTING UP THAT.
AND THE BOARD, I ALWAYS TELL THE INTERIM BOARD, SO THEY ASSIGN ME TASKS LIKE MODERATING THIS PANEL, BUT THEY ALSO ASSIGNED ME PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
SO I AM GOING MARTA, I'M GOING TO BE REACHING OUT TO YOU AND WE'RE GOING TO BE SETTING UP THE MENTORING PROGRAM.
THAT'S AS [INAUDIBLE] EXPLAINED MENTORING AND ERGS AND EVERYTHING THAT HAS TO DO WITH DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION ARE TWO SIDES OF THE SAME POINT.
SO WE'RE GOING TO BE WORKING ON THAT, MARTA.
[INAUDIBLE], THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR LIKING THE COMMENT.
YOU ARE A LIMITED EDITION AND THANK YOU FOR WHO YOU ARE.
AND LET'S CONTINUE TO TRANSFORM INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES WITH THIS.
WE HAVE ONLY A FEW MINUTES LEFT, AND I WANT TO GO BACK TO OUR FEARLESS LEADER, DR.
AND, OH, ONE MORE QUESTION JUST CAME UP.
YES, WE HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO DO, EDUCATING OUR PEOPLE IN AMERICA ABOUT OUR CULTURE AND THE IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTIONS WE BROUGHT TO AMERICA.
YES, [INAUDIBLE], THAT'S THAT'S WHAT IT'S ABOUT.
I'M GOING TO GIVE THE MICROPHONE SO THAT DR.
