I WANT TO A COUPLE OF UPDATES AND SPEND A COUPLE OF MINUTES TALKING ABOUT THE CURRENT SITUATION THAT'S GOING ON IN OUR COMMUNITY.

BUT ALSO, ACROSS THE NATION.

AND TO WHICH THE CHAIR JUST ELUDED TO.

LET ME START WITH SACSCOC.

AND ABOUT 10 DAYS THE SACSCOC WILL CONSIDER OUR CONSOLIDATION PROPOSAL.

THIS FOLLOWING THEIR DECISION I WILL IMMEDIATELY NOTIFY THE BOARD.

THE QUESTION I BELIEVE THE CHAIRED ASKED ME RECENTLY IS THIS A UP OR DOWN VOTE? WELL THE REALITY IS IT'S AN UP VOTE.

AND THEN THE WORSE THEY COULD DO WAS SEND BACK FOR ADDITIONAL WORK BUT ULTIMATELY, WE SEE NO REASON THIS WON'T BE APPROVED.

AND I'M EXCITED ABOUT THE ABILITY TO BRING FORWARD SOME INDIVIDUALS THAT I THINK WILL WORK WITH US INCREDIBLY WELL AS WE TRANSITION INTO DALLAS COLLEGE.

BUT AS WE FOLLOWING THE SACSCOC DECISION, THAT'S WHEN WE'LL TAKE ACTION AND FINALIZE THE DECISIONS AND I'LL BE SHARING THAT WITH THE BOARD SO YOU WILL BE FULLY AWARE OF WHAT WE'RE DOING.

LET ME ALSO JUST MENTION, YOU HEARD EARLIER SHERRI AND OTHERS TALK ABOUT RETURNING TO CAMPUS.

AND NOW, THIS IS REALLY, I CALL IT A MULTI-PHASE RETURN.

BUT IT'S REALLY MORE THAN THAT.

IT IS LOOKING AT HOW WE CAN OPEN TO SERVE OUR STUDENTS AND OUR COMMUNITY WHILE BEING MINDFUL OF HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS AND SPECIAL REQUESTS MADE BY THOSE IN CERTAINLY AT THE STATE LEVEL BUT ALSO NATIONALLY AS WELL.

THAT ARE INTENDED TO GUIDE US, GUIDE AND INFORM US.

WE'RE PAYING SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THIS INFORMATION AS WE CAREFULLY PLOT OUR STEPS FORWARD.

BUT NOT LOSING SIGHT OF THE MAIN THEME.

AND THAT'S MAKING SURE THAT WE'RE ABLE TO SERVE OUR STUDENTS BUT DO SO SAFELY AND MAKING THAT SAFETY FIRST BOTH WITH STUDENTS AND OUR EMPLOYEES.

AS YOU CAN TELL, I HAVE INDICATED I AM BACK IN MY OFFICE THIS WEEK.

WE'VE ASKED THE REST OF THE LEADERSHIP TEAM TO RETURN NEXT WEEK.

AND WE'LL BE BEGINNING, AS I SAID EARLIER, TO TEST OUT THE SYSTEMS AS WE GO FORWARD AND UNDERSTAND THE PROTOCOLS, THE CHALLENGES, BUT REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE WORK EVERYONE HAS DONE TO MAKE THIS POSSIBLE.

LET ME, I ALSO ONE GROUP OF VERY IMPORTANT PEOPLE THAT I DON'T WANT TO FORGET AT ALL IN THIS PROCESS, AND THAT'S OUR GRADUATES.

THIS YEAR WE HAVE MORE THAN 8,000 STUDENTS WHO WILL BE RECEIVING THEIR DEGREES.

WE'LL MAKE THAT AWARD FOR ALL 7 COLLEGES ON JUNE 13TH.

AS I PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED, MARK CUBAN WILL BE OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER.

AND I KNOW HAVING LIKE MANY OF YOU HEARD HIM SPEAK, HE WILL DELIVER BOTH AN ON-TARGET INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE OUR STUDENTS WILL NO DOUBT TAKE GEMS AWAY AS THEY LOOK AT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.

THIS WILL BE OUR FIRST VIRTUAL GRADUATION FOR THIS.

I HOPE THIS IS NOT A PATTERN FOR ALL STUDENTS.

BECAUSE WE'VE ALWAYS HAD STUDENTS WHETHER THEY EARNED THE DEGREES ONLINE OR ELSEWHERE, CAN BENEFIT FROM A VIRTUAL COMMENCEMENT.

PERHAPS WE'LL KEEP PARTS OF THIS IN THE FUTURE GOING FORWARD.

THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO VOLUNTEERED TO MAKE STATEMENTS FOR GRADUATES THAT.

I APPRECIATE THAT AND I KNOW THEY WILL TOO AS THEY RECEIVE RECOGNITION, THEY HAVE WORKED HARD TO EARN.

BOARD AND THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY, I REALLY WANT TO TURN MY ATTENTION TO WHAT HAS BEEN DOMINATING OUR MINDS BUT CERTAINLY THE MEDIA.

AND THAT'S THE CURRENT STATE OF OUR COUNTRY AS WE GRAPPLE WITH THE SENSELESS DEATH OF MR. GEORGE FLOYD IN MINNEAPOLIS.

I'VE PUT OUT A COUPLE OF STATEMENTS ON THIS.

AND FRANKLY, I STRUGGLE WITH THE WORDS GIVEN ALL THAT -- THAT'S BEEN GOING ON.

AND YOU KNOW, THE -- CERTAINLY THE ACTIONS OF THE POLICE OFFICERS INVOLVED IN THIS SITUATION EXACERBATED THE FEELINGS OF FRUSTRATION AND HOPELESSNESS EXPERIENCED BY MANY IN OUR COMMUNITIES AND LED US TO THE BOILING POINT AT THIS UNIQUE TIME IN OUR NATION'S HISTORY.

AND UNFORTUNATELY, FOR MANY AFRICAN AMERICANS AND OTHER MINORITIES AS WELL, THE RECENT DEATHS OF MR. FLOYD, AHMAUD ARBERY, BRIANNA TAYLOR ARE REMINDERS OF THE RACIAL INJUSTICE THAT CONTINUES IN OUR COUNTRY.

INSTANCES WHERE CHILDREN HAVE BEEN LOCKED IN CAGES AND SEPARATED FROM FAMILIES.

WE SAW HATE COME DIRECTLY TO OUR FRONT DOOR AT EL CENTRO IN 2016.

2016 IS A REMINDER THAT HOW IMPORTANT LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMUNITY IS.

WE SAW THOSE OUT THERE WITH HARDENED HEARTS, THERE ARE OTHERS WHO ARE BRAVE HEROES PROTECTING ALL THEY ARE SWORN TO PROTECT.

I APPRECIATE ALL OF OUR OFFICERS AND PARTICULARLY, OUR OWN HERE AT DCCCD.

AS A COLLEGE, WE'RE CALLED TO SERVE ALL THE PEOPLE OF OUR COMMUNITY, EVERY SINGLE PERSON.

AND WE'RE CHARGED TO DO SO WITH RESPECT, EQUITY AND COMPASSION.

AND AS I THOUGHT ABOUT THESE WORDS, THEY DO NOT ONLY HAVE SIGNIFICANT MEANING ON THEIR OWN BUT THEY ALIGN WITH OUR OVERALL MISSION OF WHAT NOW DALLAS COLLEGE, TRANSFORMING LIVES AND COMMUNITIES THROUGH HIGHER EDUCATION.

THAT'S NOT GOING TO CHANGE.

AND IF ANYTHING, IT'S MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER FOR OUR STUDENTS, EMPLOYERS AND COMMUNITY AT LARGE.

AS EDUCATORS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS, I REALLY THINK WE COME TO THIS WITH A UNIQUE LENS.

IN WHICH WE HAVE TO VIEW THE CHALLENGES AND UNDERSTAND TOO THAT WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY AND REALLY AN OBLIGATION TO FACILITATE LASTING CHANGES TO ALL THE COMMUNITIES THAT WE SERVE BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, DO IT IN A WAY THEY ALL DESERVE.

WE TAKE THE ROLE OF SERVING OUR COMMUNITY SERIOUSLY.

AND CONSIDERING THE RACIAL AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY OF OUR COLLEGE, YOU KNOW, THIS IS REALLY ONE OF OUR GREATEST STRENGTHS.

AND ONE THAT WE CAPITALIZED ON IN THE PAST THAT WE'VE SHOWCASED AS WE LOOKED AT HOW TO BEST MEET THE NEEDS OF NOT ONLY TODAY, BUT INTO THE FUTURE AS WELL.

AS WE LOOK AT THIS AND LOOK AT HOW WE MOVE FORWARD, I REALLY HOPE I WAS THINKING OF THIS AS WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THE GRADUATION, AND THOSE STUDENTS WE IT IN OUR EMPLOYEES EVERY DAY.

AND WE HAVE SO MANY, AS I THINK ABOUT THIS, IT'S INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT WE MOVE FORWARD WITH A DEEPER LOVE AND RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER.

THAT WE DEMONSTRATE INCREASED EQUITY AND ACTION AND LEARNING AND THAT WE GROW FROM THIS DEVASTATING TIME IN OUR NATION'S HISTORY SO WE CAN EMERGE STRONGER AND HELP MAKE TOMORROW BETTER IN DALLAS AND BEYOND.

THE QUESTION I'VE ASKED OF OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM WHEN WE'VE SPOKEN ABOUT THIS THE LAST SEVERAL DAYS AND GOTTEN INTO DEEP DIALOGUE ABOUT IT IS HOW DO WE BOTH ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE REALITY OF THE SITUATION BUT HARNESS THE ENERGY FROM THIS MOMENT TO CREATE CHANGE AND HOW DO WE ENSURE THAT WE'RE ABLE TO DELIVER AND ACT UPON THAT CHANGE.

I START ALMOST EVERY ONE OF THESE CONVERSATIONS BY SAYING, I DON'T HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS.

AND I DON'T EVEN KNOW THE QUESTIONS SOMETIMES TO ASK.

BUT I REALLY HOPE THAT ALL OF US WILL FIND A WAY TO EMBRACE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO RAISE OUR VOICES AND TO BE PART OF THE SOLUTION.

WHETHER IT MEANS ASKING OURSELVES SOME POTENTIALLY HARD QUESTIONS ABOUT OUR OWN BELIEFS AND BIASES OR ENGAGING AND HAVING MEANINGFUL YET DIFFICULT

CONVERSATIONS COWORKERS.

AND WE STARTED SOME OF THOSE AS WELL.

TO TALKING TO FAMILY MEMBERS, CLERGY, OUR COMMUNITY LEADERS.

WE'VE BEEN PART OF THOSE AS WE'VE ENGAGED IN THESE CONVERSATIONS.

I REALLY THINK WE HAVE THE CAPACITY, NOT JUST THE CAPACITY, I THINK WE HAVE THE OBLIGATION TO LEARN FROM ONE ANOTHER AND ALL CAN BECOME BETTER VERSIONS OF OURSELVES.

I REALIZE THAT THIS IS A CRITICAL TIME FOR OUR COMMUNITY.

BUT IT'S A CRITICAL TIME FOR ALL OF US AS WELL.

ESPECIALLY AS I THINK ABOUT THE ONGOING RESPONSE TO THE PANDEMIC THAT WE'RE DEALING WITH, I KNOW THAT WHETHER IT BE HOW WE DEAL WITH THE PANDEMIC OR DEALING WITH THE SOCIAL INJUSTICE AND THE RACIAL INEQUITY THAT WE SEE IN OUR COMMUNITY, THAT WE'RE BETTER TOGETHER.

AND THAT TOGETHER WE CAN OVERCOME OUR CHALLENGES AND CREATE A SAFER, MORE JUST AND EQUITABLE SOCIETY FOR ALL.

I THINK THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THE FOUNDERS OF THIS COLLEGE INTENDED US TO DO.

THEY DIDN'T GO DOOR TO DOOR SEEKING NAMES ON A POSITION, ON A PETITION, SO THAT WE COULD TEACH CLASSES.

BUT RATHER, THEY REALLY WANTED TO CHANGE THE COMMUNITY.

AND THAT PURPOSE I DON'T THINK IS ANYMORE IMPORTANT NOW THAN AT ANY TIME IN OUR HISTORY.

WITH THAT, MADAM CHAIR, THAT CONCLUDES MY COMMENTS.

NOW, I DON'T KNOW IF ANYBODY THOUGHT ANYTHING ABOUT THIS EXCEPT ME.

BUT WHEN SHE WAS CALLING THE POLICE, IT WAS NOT A MAN IS THREATENING ME.

IT'S AN AFRICAN AMERICAN MAN.

THAT'S THREATENING ME.

AND WHAT I WOULD SAY IS THAT EVERYBODY NEEDS TO THINK ABOUT YOUR ACTIONS.

BECAUSE WHEN SHE MADE THAT DISTINCTION, THAT'S WHEN IT CROSSED INTO RACISM TO ME.

AT THE END OF THE DAY, WE ARE ALL MEN AND WOMEN.

DOESN'T MATTER ABOUT THE COLOR OF OUR SKIN, OUR BACKGROUNDS, OR WHATEVER.

BUT YOU TREAT PEOPLE HUMANLY.

AND YOU THINK ABOUT THE ISSUES THAT YOU MAY CAUSE FOR SOMEONE ELSE IN THE ENVIRONMENT THAT EXISTS IN THIS COUNTRY.

AND THOSE WERE THE COMMENTS THAT I WANTED TO CONTRIBUTE.

AS I SAID, THEY REPORTED ON IT.

A LITTLE DISCUSSION BUT NOT A WHOLE LOT.

THIS TYPE OF THING HAPPENS EVERY DAY.

AND AS SOMEONE SAID, SOME PEOPLE ARE NOT CUT OUT TO BE POLICE.

AND WE HAVE GOT TO STRIKE SOME BALANCE IN THIS COUNTRY WHERE WE ASSURE JUSTICE FOR EVERYBODY.

REGARDLESS OF WHO THEY ARE.

AND THEN IN THE NEXT SENTENCE IT SAYS, OLYMPIA.

I'M NOT EVEN SURE WHAT THE NAME OF THIS COMPANY WAS AT THIS POINT.

THEN I DIDN'T KNOW THAT THERE WAS A EMPLOYEE FROM NORTH LAKE THAT WAS ON LOAN AT BILL J.
