[1. Roll Call - Announcement of Quorum]
FIVE MINUTES TO SPEAK.THIS REGULAR BOARD MEETING IS BEING BROADCAST OVER THE INTERNET.
CHANCELLOR, CAN YOU PLEASE CONFIRM THIS MEETING HAS BEEN POSTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LAW?
[2. Certification of Notice Posted for the Meeting]
MADAM CHAIR, I CAN CERTIFY THIS MEETING WAS POSTED ACCORDING TO SECTION 551.054 TEXAS GOVERNMENT CODE.THANK YOU. WE WILL NOW RISE FOR THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE.
ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.
HONOR. I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE TEXAS ONE STATE, ONE AND INDIVISIBLE.
OKAY. DO WE HAVE ANY CITIZENS DESIRING TO ADDRESS THE BOARD TODAY, MISS MOLINA? NO ONE BEFORE ME.
THANK YOU. WE WILL NOW START OUR MEETING WITH A PRESENTATION.
[5. Special Presentation: Texas Cup Pitch Competition: Michael Moe, Global Silicon Valley, Founder; Prabin Dhakal, Finalist]
CHANCELLOR LONDON. MADAM CHAIR, BOARD MEMBERS.IT'S A PLEASURE TO SPEND SOME TIME TALKING ABOUT OUR RECENT SUMMIT THAT WAS HELD HERE.
THE MISSION SUMMIT HELD AT SMU IN PARTNERSHIP WITH GSB GLOBAL SILICON VALLEY, AND A COMPONENT TO THAT MISSION SUMMIT. YOU'LL HEAR ABOUT IN JUST A COUPLE OF MINUTES WAS ALSO THE TEXAS CUP, A PITCH COMPETITION THAT WE'LL TALK ABOUT A LITTLE BIT.
AND WE HAD ONE OF OUR AMAZING STUDENTS WHO WAS A FINALIST IN THAT.
AND YOU'LL GET TO MEET IN A MINUTE, BUT IT'S MY PLEASURE TO INVITE TO THE PODIUM MICHAEL MOE, WHO IS THE FOUNDER AND CEO OF GSV HOLDINGS, WHICH IS A GROWTH FOCUSED INVESTMENT PLATFORM THAT HAS BEEN BASED IN SILICON VALLEY.
GSV IS INVESTED IN COMPANIES THAT MAYBE YOU'VE HEARD OF, PLACES LIKE FACEBOOK AND TWITTER AND DROPBOX AND SNAP AND LYFT AND LYFT AND SPOTIFY AND GSV IS REALLY BEEN FOCUSED ON BRINGING GREAT BUSINESS IDEAS TOGETHER AND HOLDS AN ANNUAL SUMMIT EVERY YEAR IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY THAT SOME OF US WERE PRIVILEGED TO ATTEND THIS YEAR, THAT THERE WAS OVER 7000 PARTICIPANTS, I THINK IT WAS. AND SO AMAZING OPPORTUNITY TO BRING THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY TOGETHER, TECHNOLOGY TOGETHER AND THE EDUCATION SECTOR TOGETHER.
AND WE'RE LUCKY THAT THE MICHAEL'S ALSO CHOSEN NOW TO MAKE DALLAS HIS HOME AND HAS RELOCATED HERE TO REALLY BUILD AND EXPAND ON THE WORK THAT CAN BE DONE HERE IN DALLAS.
AND THE MISSION SUMMIT WAS WAS A BIG PART OF THAT.
SO, AGAIN, MY PRIVILEGE TO WELCOME MICHAEL MOE TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ALL OF US.
THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. MICHAEL. KNOW MY PRIVILEGE.
CHANCELLOR. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE DID WHEN WE MOVED HERE AND THIS REALLY WAS SOMETHING THAT WAS CATALYZED DURING THE PANDEMIC WAS A WROTE A BOOK CALLED THE MISSION CORPORATION, WHICH WAS REALLY ABOUT THIS EVOLUTION OF CAPITALISM DRIVEN BY ENTREPRENEURSHIP, WHICH IS WHAT WE BELIEVE STRONGLY IS THE GREAT BUSINESSES OF TOMORROW ARE GOING TO HAVE THE AMBITION OF A FOR PROFIT AND THE HEART OF A NOT FOR PROFIT COMBINING PURPOSE AND PROFITS.
AND THAT WAS REALLY THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE MISSION SUMMIT.
AS YOU MENTIONED, WE DID IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SMU.
SO AND WE'RE HOPING THAT THE MISSION SUMMIT CAN EVOLVE AND GROW.
BUT REALLY THE KEY PART ABOUT IT IS HOW WE BRING TOGETHER PEOPLE TO ACCELERATE THESE IDEAS THAT CAN BE TRANSFORMATIVE FOR SOCIETY DRIVEN BY ENTREPRENEURSHIP.
AND AND THAT'S WHERE WE GET INTO THE TEXAS CUP.
AND SO, AGAIN, WE USE THE PLAYBOOK THAT WE USED WITH THE ASU GSV SUMMIT.
WE HAVE A STARTUP COMPETITION FOCUSED SOLELY ON EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY THERE.
WE HAD 900 PARTICIPANTS IN THAT COMPETITION.
SO USING THAT PLAYBOOK, BUT FOCUS ON MISSION COMPANIES.
[00:05:08]
WE HAD 13 DIFFERENT UNIVERSITIES IN THE STATE OF TEXAS, PARTICIPATED 100 DIFFERENT PARTICIPANTS.WE'LL INTRODUCE PRIVATE IN A SECOND.
BUT REALLY A KEY PART THAT WE YOU KNOW, THAT WE BELIEVE WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO TO TO HELP DEVELOP IS, YOU KNOW, WE REALLY BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP, INNOVATION IDEAS.
I LIKE TO SAY THAT OLD MACDONALD HAD A FARM.
E-I-E-I-O WELL, NEW MACDONALD HAS A STARTUP.
AND THAT'S REALLY WHAT THIS THIS TEXAS CUP ADMISSION COMPETITION WAS REALLY ABOUT.
AND THAT'S THAT'S THE GOAL OF THE TEXAS CUP.
AND I THINK BOB IS A GREAT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE TYPE OF PEOPLE THAT WE'RE IN THIS COMPETITION.
HE WAS ONE OF THE 12 FINALISTS THAT WE HAD AT THE AT THE MISSION SUMMIT AND DID A GREAT JOB.
SO WITH THAT, MAYBE I'LL TURN IT OVER TO ROBIN.
AS YOU HEARD ME SAY, THE NUMBER OF INITIATIVES THAT HE HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN AND THAT HE HAS SUPPORTED AND THAT GSV HAS SUPPORTED, THAT IS REALLY PUSHING INNOVATION AND REALLY AT THE FOREFRONT FOR A LONG TIME.
AND SO TO BE ABLE TO ENGAGE AS WE HAVE AS PARTNERS, TO REALLY THINK ABOUT WHAT IS OUR ROLE AS AS AN INSTITUTION, AS DALLAS COLLEGE, TO DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY AND TO BE INNOVATIVE AND TO BE PARTNERING AND LOOKING AT NEW WAYS TO DO THINGS.
AND SO MICHAEL AND GSV ARE A BIG PART OF THAT.
SO I APPRECIATE YOU TAKING TIME TO BE HERE WITH US TODAY.
AND BEFORE WE DO GET TO TO TO OUR ROCK STAR STUDENT, I WOULD LIKE TO ASK PIPER TO COME UP AND TALK JUST A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ON THE OPERATIONAL SIDE OF OF WHAT WE'VE DONE ON THE PITCH CUP SIDE.
AND JUST BEFORE I GO, I JUST WANT TO SAY A LITTLE COMMERCIAL FOR DALLAS.
I LIVED IN SILICON VALLEY FOR 25 YEARS AND FELT VERY PRIVILEGED TO DO THAT.
I MOVED HERE BECAUSE I REALLY DO BELIEVE THE FUTURE IS BEING CREATED OUT OF DALLAS AND WE THINK HAVING A PARTNERSHIP WITH DALLAS COLLEGE IS ABSOLUTELY EXCITING AND CRITICAL AND WE COULDN'T BE MORE PRIVILEGED. SO THANK YOU.
THANK YOU FOR THAT. APPRECIATE.
THANK YOU, MICHAEL. THANK YOU, CHANCELLOR LONDON.
I THINK MOST OF YOU KNOW, WE'VE SPENT A LOT OF TIME THINKING ABOUT INNOVATION, PLANNING FOR INNOVATION, AND YOU'LL HEAR MORE ABOUT IT AT THE END OF JUNE IN OUR PLANNING SESSION THEN.
BUT WE'VE WE'RE LOOKING AT INNOVATION AS WAY BEYOND TECHNOLOGY.
AND I THINK THE PARTNERSHIP WITH MICHAEL AND KATHERINE AND WHAT THEY DID LAST WEEK WITH THE MISSION SUMMIT AS WELL AS WITH THE TEXAS CUP PITCH COMPETITION, IS JUST JUST THE BARE MINIMUM OF WHAT WE'RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO DO IN THE FUTURE.
AND THAT'S WHY I'M SO EXCITED ABOUT WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO HEAR TODAY.
AND SO JUSTIN TOOK THIS ON TO MANAGE THE OUR PART OF THE TEXAS CUP AND OUR VOLUNTEERS WHO WENT AND TRIED TO HELP AT THE MISSION SUMMIT JUST HELP ORGANIZE WORK AT REGISTRATION TABLES AND THOSE KINDS OF THINGS.
WE HAD A NUMBER OF FOLKS THAT VOLUNTEERED TO JUDGE SOME OF THESE TEXAS CUP PRESENTATIONS AROUND OUR CAMPUSES, AND WE DID THIS AT EVERY CAMPUS. AND I GOT TO BE A JUDGE AT BROOKHAVEN, AND I ACTUALLY GOT TO HEAR 3 OR 4 DIFFERENT PRESENTATIONS.
AND SO THAT WAS SOMETHING WE HOPE TO EXPAND IN THE YEARS TO COME AS WELL.
SO, JUSTIN, IF YOU'LL COME UP AND TELL A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT AND INTRODUCE OUR STUDENT.
WELL, I GUESS THE EVENT WAS OPEN TO STUDENTS, ALUMNI, ADMINISTRATION STAFF.
WHOEVER WAS ASSOCIATED WITH DALLAS COLLEGE COULD COULD APPLY.
WE HAD 47 REGISTER, AND PRAVEEN WAS WAS THE ONE WHO WHO MADE IT TO THE FINALS.
[00:10:02]
SO, YOU KNOW, I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE IN HIS INITIAL PITCH WITH KATHERINE MERRICK, THE DIRECTOR AT GSV AND ALSO VICE CHANCELLOR WILKINS WAS THERE AS WELL.BUT. WHEN YOU LISTEN TO HIM TALK, HE HAS SUCH A PASSION FOR WHAT HE WANTS TO CREATE.
AND THIS IS EXACTLY THE TYPE OF THING THAT WE WANT TO HARBOR AND WE WANT TO PUSH FORWARD.
I THINK NO MORE THAN MAYBE 12 HOURS AFTER HIS FINAL PITCH AT THE SMU MISSION SUMMIT, I GOT AN EMAIL ASKING OR AN EMAIL FROM KEVIN ASKING WHAT THE NEXT STEP WAS.
HOW DO I KEEP GOING? WHERE CAN I PRESENT NEXT? YOU KNOW, SO I THINK YOU'RE GOING TO GET TO EXPERIENCE THE PASSION THAT HE HAS.
SO LET ME JUST GIVE YOU HIS BIO REAL QUICK.
AND PRE-MEDICAL IS FROM NEPAL.
HE'S STUDYING COMPUTER SCIENCE.
HE'S THE FOUNDER AND CREATOR OF MINECRAFT ACADEMY, WHICH ALLOWS STUDENTS TO LEARN ABOUT FOCUS AND CONCENTRATION, ALLOWING THEM TO GET HELP FROM EXPERTS AND TRANSFORM THEIR LIVES BY GETTING THE SUPPORT THEY NEED TO SUCCEED ALONG THEIR EDUCATION JOURNEY AND IN LIFE.
THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR ME.
I WAS REALLY HAPPY WHEN I KNEW I WENT TO THE FINALS.
MAKING IT TO THE FINALS WAS ONE OF MY BIGGEST DREAM ACHIEVED AND HELP ALSO LIKE GSP, ARE HELPING SO MANY STUDENTS, LIKE LISTENING TO ALL THE STUDENTS TRYING TO FIND NEXT GENERATION IDEAS AND COMBINING PROPOSED WITH PROFIT IS REALLY GREAT I BELIEVE, AND MY APP IS SIMILAR LIKE THAT.
SO YEAH, LET ME JUST SPEAK A FEW WORDS ABOUT MY APP.
SO LET ME ASK YOU ALL, LET ME ALL ASK YOU A SIMPLE QUESTION.
OKAY? SO HOW MANY OF YOU IN YOUR LIFE HAVE BEEN TOLD TO FOCUS AND CONCENTRATE SO I CAN SEE A LOT OF YOU, BUT THE REAL QUESTION IS HOW MANY OF THEM ACTUALLY TAUGHT YOU HOW TO DO IT? VERY FEW OR NOBODY AT ALL.
PROBLEMS LIKE NOT BEING ABLE TO FOCUS AND CONCENTRATE CAN CAUSE HUGE ISSUES LIKE DEPRESSION.
AND SPEAKING ABOUT DEPRESSION, IT IS REPORTED THAT MORE THAN 4.1 MILLION TEENS JUST AGE BETWEEN 12 TO 17 HAVE BEEN REPORTED TO HAVE SOME SORT OF MENTAL HEALTH RELATED ISSUES WHERE THEY CANNOT FOCUS, CONCENTRATE OR DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING.
THAT'S ONLY IN THE UNITED STATES.
6.7% OF THEM HAD PLANNED HOW THEY ARE GOING TO DO IT.
AND UNFORTUNATELY, 1.5% OF THEM TRIED COMMITTING SUICIDE ONCE OR TWICE IN THEIR LIFE.
SEEING THIS ALARMING STATISTICS I FOUND THIS COMPANY MINECRAFT ACADEMY.
LATELY, I THINK WE ALL HAVE SEEN MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF APP OR RELATED TECHNOLOGIES LIKE CHATGPT WHERE YOU CAN JUST TYPE YOUR QUESTION AND ANSWER YOU SOLVE WITHIN A MINUTES, OR TRYING TO TAKE EDUCATION TO A DIFFERENT PART OF THE WORLD.
THIS IS THE TIME I WILL ASK YOU ONE MORE QUESTION.
SO IF ALL THOSE RESOURCES AND EDUCATION WAS MORE SUFFICIENT FACTOR, WHY DOESN'T EVERYONE WHO ATTENDED COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY ENDS UP BECOMING DOCTOR, ENGINEER, PILOT OR THEY DON'T HAVE THEIR DREAM JOB? OR LIKE, LET'S TALK ABOUT DALLAS COLLEGE.
THERE ARE SO MANY STUDENTS IN DALLAS COLLEGE RIGHT NOW.
MOST OF THEM WILL NOT EVEN GET AN OPPORTUNITY OR GET A GOOD, GOOD JOB THAT THEY WANT.
AND THE BEST PART ABOUT THE APP IS IT'S A FACEBOOK LIKE PLATFORM WHERE YOU CAN MAKE NEW FRIENDS, CONNECT WITH DIFFERENT PEOPLE, SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE, GET A FEEDBACK AND LEARN WITH THOUSANDS OF OTHER USERS ALONGSIDE, WHICH MEANS LIKE YOU ARE LEARNING NEW THING EVERY SINGLE DAY.
UM. THOUGH I WAS REALLY SHOCKED TO KNOW.
ACCORDING TO THE RESEARCH DONE BY MICROSOFT, IN 2015, THEY FOUND AN AVERAGE ATTENTION.
TIME SPAN OF HUMAN HAS DECREASED FROM 12 SECONDS IN 2000 TO JUST EIGHT SECONDS RIGHT NOW.
CAN YOU ALL IMAGINE THAT EVEN AN AVERAGE ATTENTION TIME SPAN OF GOLDFISH IS MORE THAN US, WHICH IS NINE SECONDS? AND BELIEVE ME OR NOT, IF THIS CONTINUES AFTER 50 YEARS, WILL BE A WALKING ZOMBIE FOR SURE.
YEAH, I'M SURE, BECAUSE IT SEEMS A SMALL NUMBER, BUT IT REALLY DOES MAKE A HUGE SENSE OF.
OF GROWING UP, I ALWAYS HAD A QUESTION WHY IS ELON MUSK SO SUCCESSFUL? LIKE, WHY IS ELON MUSK SO SUCCESSFUL? RATAN TATA OR LIKE BILL GATES? I WAS I ALWAYS HAD THAT QUESTION IN MY MIND.
[00:15:01]
UH, IT WAS NOT LIKE THEY HAD THIS BIG OF A BRAIN AND I HAD A SMALL ONE OR LIKE, YOU KNOW, ONE, ONLY ONE ONE, ONE PERSON, A PERSON IN THE WORLD ARE ACTUALLY SUCCESSFUL.AND ACTUALLY. THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND THEY ACHIEVE WHAT THEY WANT.
UH, BY DOING ALL THE RESEARCH, I CAME TO A CONCLUSION THAT THEIR MINDSET WAS REALLY GREAT.
THEY KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THEY WERE DOING.
SO RIGHT NOW, I WANT TO TEACH EACH AND EVERY STUDENT THE SAME THING.
SO, YEAH, IF POSSIBLE, ASK HELP FROM DALLAS COLLEGE TO COMPLETE THIS PROJECT.
UM, AND THEN, YEAH, LET'S CHANGE THE FUTURE GENERATIONS AND OUR STUDENTS DO.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. WELL, THANK YOU FOR FOR REPRESENTING DALLAS COLLEGE.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR PASSION AND YOUR FOCUS THAT THAT YOU BRING TO THIS INITIATIVE.
AND SO WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEE WHAT WHAT IS NEXT AND CERTAINLY HOW WE AS AN INSTITUTION CAN HELP SUPPORT YOU AND IN WHAT YOU DO.
BUT BUT WE LOOK FORWARD TO THAT APP BEING ON ALL OF OUR PHONES HERE BEFORE LONG.
YEAH. THANK YOU SO MUCH. IT REALLY MEANS A LOT FOR ME.
I WANT TO KNOW WHEN THAT APP IS READY BECAUSE I'VE GOT GRANDCHILDREN MYSELF.
YEAH. THANK YOU SO MUCH. THANK YOU.
THANK YOU. SO IF WE CAN GET A QUICK PICTURE WITH YOU ON THE BOARD, WE'D LOVE TO DO THAT.
SO HOW DO YOU WANT TO ARRANGE THIS IN THE FRONT? ALL RIGHT, WE'LL COME AROUND AND.
OKAY. AND WE WILL CONTINUE WITH ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE CHANCELLOR.
[6. Chancellor and Board Announcements]
THANK YOU, MADAM CHAIR.I JUST HAVE A FEW THINGS TO TO MENTION THIS EVENING.
FIRST OF ALL, JUNE IS OBVIOUSLY A VERY BUSY MONTH FROM THE BOARD PERSPECTIVE.
WE HAVE THIS MEETING AND THEN WE HAVE OUR A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER IN JUNE.
AND SO I APPRECIATE THE COMMITMENT OF THE BOARD TO SPEND TIME AS WE TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE BUDGET ASPECTS, THE FACILITIES PIECES AND OUR OVERALL PLANNING THAT WE'RE GOING TO DO WITH THAT. AND AND THANKS TO THE STAFF FOR HELPING PLAN AND PREPARE FOR THAT.
I ALSO WANT TO MENTION THAT THAT JUNE IS IS PRIDE MONTH AND DALLAS COLLEGE IS A STRONG ALLY PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES AND SUPPORT FOR OUR STUDENTS TO SUCCEED AND OUR EMPLOYEES AS WELL.
RECENTLY WE HAD A NUMBER OF OUR TEAM AND STUDENTS THAT PARTICIPATED IN THE DALLAS PRIDE PARADE TO SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY AND THERE'LL BE ADDITIONAL EVENTS THAT WE'RE PARTICIPATING IN THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF JUNE AS WELL.
ALSO WANT TO MENTION ONE OF THE THINGS THAT JUST CONCLUDED WAS THE REGULAR LEGISLATIVE SESSION.
BUT I'LL MENTION JUST A COUPLE VERY QUICKLY.
AND AND WE'RE WAITING FOR THE GOVERNOR'S SIGNATURE ON THAT.
BUT CERTAINLY WHEN THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE PUT OUT A RECAP OF THE SPECIAL SESSION AND WHAT WAS ACCOMPLISHED IN THE PRIORITIES, THIS BILL WAS ONE OF THOSE THAT WAS LISTED. AND SO A LOT OF WORK AND EFFORT AND ADVOCACY AMONGST THE 50 COMMUNITY COLLEGES, AMONGST THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY, AMONGST OUR TRUSTEES AND OUR TRUSTEE ASSOCIATION TO HELP SUPPORT THAT.
BUT THIS OUTCOMES BASED MODEL IS NEW AND DIFFERENT.
[00:20:04]
AND SO IT'S GOING TO IT'S GOING TO CAUSE US TO NEED TO SHIFT, TO FOCUS ON OUTCOMES IN WAYS PERHAPS THAT WE HAVEN'T ALWAYS.AND ALSO, I WANT TO MENTION THAT, YOU KNOW, WHEN WHEN PEOPLE READ THE HEADLINES OF THIS NEW INVESTMENT IN COMMUNITY COLLEGES, WHICH IS NEARLY $680 MILLION, THERE'S THIS AUTOMATIC ASSUMPTION THAT IT'S A HUGE WINDFALL FOR DALLAS COLLEGE, AND THAT'S THAT'S NOT THE CASE.
YOU KNOW, WE WE WILL SEE SOME INCREASE IN THIS FIRST YEAR FROM IT, BUT IT PROVIDES A FRAMEWORK FOR US TO BUILD ON, QUITE FRANKLY, AS WE INCREASE OUR OUTCOMES THAT ARE GOING TO BECOME IMPORTANT.
AND THEN ALSO, YOU KNOW, THERE'S STILL DETAILS TO BE WORKED OUT.
AS I MENTIONED BEFORE, WORKING WITH THE COORDINATING BOARD, DOING SOME EMERGENCY RULE MAKING AUTHORITY OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS AND THEN OVER THE NEXT YEAR, BECAUSE AGAIN, THIS IS NEW, THIS IS DIFFERENT.
THERE'S A LOT OF MOVING PIECES AND PARTS TO THIS.
BUT FROM A STATE POLICY PERSPECTIVE, IT IS A IT IT'S A BIG LIFT AND IT'S A BIG CHANGE.
BUT BUT I THINK WE SHOULD ALL BE EXCITED ABOUT THAT.
ALSO MENTIONED A COUPLE OF OTHER PIECES OF LEGISLATION WHERE I KNOW THAT THERE'S BEEN QUESTIONS.
ONE OF THOSE IS SENATE BILL 17, WHICH IS AROUND DEI.
THERE ARE SOME ELEMENTS THAT OF IT THAT AREN'T REALLY GOING TO CAUSE ANY SHIFTS FOR US.
BUT I KNOW AS AN INSTITUTION WE BELIEVE IN DIVERSITY.
WE BELIEVE IN SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS, OUR EMPLOYEES AND OUR COMMUNITY, AND THAT WE WILL CONTINUE TO DO THAT AS WE COMPLY WITH THE NEW REQUIREMENTS OF SENATE BILL 17. SO THERE WILL BE MORE MORE TO COME ON THAT.
BUT I JUST WANTED TO MENTION THAT.
AND THEN THEN ALSO ON THE LEGISLATIVE SIDE, I'LL MENTION SENATE BILL 1987, WHICH WAS A BILL AROUND ACCREDITATION THAT WE'VE SPENT A LOT OF TIME TALKING ABOUT ACCREDITATION AND THE IDEA OF CHANGING ACCREDITORS.
AND SO THAT BILL DID NOT PASS.
AND SO THERE'S STILL SOME LANGUAGE WITHIN CODE THAT IS SPECIFIC TO SACHSE OUR CURRENT ACCREDITOR.
AND SO WE CONTINUE TO ENGAGE IN SOME DIALOG WITH THE COORDINATING BOARD ABOUT WHAT POSSIBILITIES MAY BE IF WE CHOSE TO PURSUE ACCREDITATION OUTSIDE OF SACHSE.
BUT I'LL CLOSE MY REMARKS WITH.
UM. HOW MUCH I APPRECIATE THE WORK THAT THE TEAM AND THAT MOLLY BEWLEY AS THE EVENT CHAIR OF OUR COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES.
WE HAD SIX OF THOSE OVER A THREE DAY PERIOD.
WE HAD SUCH OUTSTANDING REPRESENTATION OF THE BOARD THAT PARTICIPATED OF OUR FACULTY THAT PARTICIPATED, OUR STAFF, OUR VOLUNTEERS WHO WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND.
AND SO, YOU KNOW, I WANT US ALL TO LEAVE HERE AND QUITE FRANKLY, LEAVE EVERY DAY, KEEPING IN MIND OF THE 95, 100 GRADUATES THAT WE HAD AND THE IMPACT THAT THIS INSTITUTION AND THE WORK OF THIS BOARD AND EVERY EMPLOYEE HAS.
AND SO 9500 INDIVIDUALS THAT, YOU KNOW, AGAIN, ABOUT A THIRD OF THEM WERE FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS, 71% WERE FEMALE, 85% STUDENTS OF COLOR.
AND SO WE WERE PROVIDING AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THOSE THAT WE SERVE.
AND SO NOW AS WE BEGIN TO BUILD ON ALL OF THAT, THAT IS ALWAYS WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO.
BUT BUT CERTAINLY IS WHAT I JUST MENTIONED.
EVEN FROM THE STATE POLICY PERSPECTIVE, THERE'S GOING TO BE MORE FOCUS ON HOW ARE WE SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS WITH THEIR SUCCESSFUL JOURNEY, WHATEVER THAT JOURNEY AND OUTCOME MAY BE.
CONCLUDES MY REMARKS. THANK YOU, CHANCELLOR LENNON.
DO YOU HAVE ANY TRUSTEES WHO HAVE ANY ANNOUNCEMENTS? TRUSTEE CLARK. SO ON MAY 27TH, I WAS INVITED TO BE ON THE WHAT PLATFORM? ON THE PLATFORM OF AVANCI.
THAT'S AN EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM.
THEY HAVE SIX CENTERS, FIVE IN DALLAS, ONE IN FORT WORTH.
SO THEY HAD ALL OF THEIR GRADUATIONS IN ONE DAY AT THE WEST CAMPUS.
[00:25:01]
SO IT WAS REAL GOOD TO SEE THE WEST CAMPUS BEING UTILIZED IN THAT MANNER AND FULFILLING ONE OF ITS PURPOSES, WHICH IS TO TRULY BE OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY AND INVITE THE COMMUNITY IN. THEY EVEN REQUIRED THE THE FORT WORTH PEOPLE TO COME DALLAS FOR THE GRADUATION.SO WE GOT KNOWN AMONG THE FORT WORTH PARENTS AS WELL.
UM, AND THEN I WENT TO THE COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTER THAT THEY HELD AT WEST CAMPUS LAST SATURDAY.
WHAT IS IT? MR. JONATHAN ESTRADA WAS THE ONE THAT COORDINATED THESE, AND HE WAS THERE ALL DAY FOR THE GRADUATIONS AS WELL AS THE COMMUNITY RESOURCE FAIR AND GOT A GOOD CHANCE TO VISIT WITH CATHY ACOSTA AT THE COMMUNITY RESOURCE FAIR.
I JUST WANTED TO AGAIN KIND OF REINFORCE WHAT THE CHANCELLOR SAID ABOUT OUR OPPORTUNITY AND INNOVATION AND OUR OPPORTUNITY TO TO REALLY SET THE STAGE FOR THE NEXT 50 YEARS OF THIS COLLEGE IS IS REALLY, TO ME, ONE OF THE GREATEST CHALLENGES THAT WE WILL EVER FACE PROBABLY IN OUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE AND TO HAVE THE PRIVILEGE TO BE A PART OF THAT.
IT'S I WAS PRIVILEGED TO GO TO SAN DIEGO AND ATTEND THE CONVENTION OUT IN THAT ASU HAD.
AND THEN I SPENT I DID THREE DAYS AT SMU WITH THE SUMMIT THAT WAS JUST HELD OVER HERE.
AND TO BE ABLE TO ASSOCIATE WITH THE PEOPLE WHOSE CREATIVITY IS TOMORROW IS OUR JOB IS TO BECOME THAT CONDUIT THAT TAKES THAT CREATIVITY AND THEN USES OUR BRILLIANT STAFF OF INSTRUCTORS AND PROFESSORS TO BE ABLE TO CONVEY THAT TO THE STUDENTS OF TOMORROW.
I MEAN, THAT'S WHAT SO WHAT WE'VE GOT TO DO IS THAT WE WE CAN'T MAKE PEOPLE BE LIKE THE YOUNG MAN SPOKE TODAY, BUT WE CAN PUT THE OPPORTUNITY OUT THERE AND THAT'S OUR JOB.
AND I BELIEVE THAT THAT OUR PURPOSE AND DIRECTION IS BEING REALLY, REALLY DEFINED, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU GET PEOPLE LIKE MICHAEL MOE RELOCATING TO DALLAS, TEXAS, FROM SAN FRANCISCO, THE HUB OF INNOVATION OF WHAT WE'VE KNOWN IN OUR GENERATION.
AND SO I THINK WE HAVE TO REALIZE WHEN WE'RE REALLY HANDED A GIFT, WE'VE GOT TO REALLY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT AND WE HAVE TO MOVE QUICKLY, WHICH IS NOT THE MODE OF HIGHER EDUCATION.
I'VE LEARNED THAT THAT IT IS JUST NOT SOMETHING, AS I SERVE ON THE STATE BOARD WITH THE OTHER COMMUNITY COLLEGES, I WILL TELL YOU THAT DALLAS COLLEGE MOVES AT AT JET SPEED COMPARED TO THE REST OF THEM IN THE STATE.
AND SO EVEN THOUGH THAT IS NOT FAST ENOUGH, BECAUSE IF WE DON'T MOVE FAST, THOSE OPPORTUNITIES, THINGS WILL TAKE THOSE STUDENTS LIVES AWAY.
SO TO ME, IT IS AN ABSOLUTE PHENOMENAL OPPORTUNITY.
THE FIRST TIME I MET MICHAEL MOE, HE SAID TO ME, HE SAYS, CLIFF, I'M TELLING YOU, THE DALLAS WILL BE THE CENTER OF INNOVATION, AS SAN FRANCISCO WAS IN THE.COM INDUSTRY.
AND OUR CONGREGATION AND OUR KIDS THAT WE HAVE WILL BE HELPING THOSE WHO NEVER GET THAT OPPORTUNITY.
THANK YOU. TRUSTEE FLOYD TRUSTEE MAYOR.
IN THE THEME OF BARRIER BUSTING, I WANT TO RECOGNIZE AMONGST ALL THE BARRIER BUSTERS BUSTERS IN THE DISTRICT ONE THAT IT'S CLOSE TO HOME.
MANY OF YOU KNOW THAT I OFFICE AT THE GARLAND CENTER, DALLAS COLLEGE GARLAND CENTER, AND WE'VE BEEN THERE FOR ABOUT, WHAT, 13 YEARS? AND WE HAVE WE HAVE A LAB THAT'S BEEN AROUND SINCE 13 YEARS THAT HAD SOME EQUIPMENT IN IT THAT THAT PEOPLE DIDN'T BELIEVE THAT COULD BE MOVED TO MAKE ROOM FOR TRAINING FOR LOTS OF FOLKS IN PARTICULAR.
[00:30:02]
BUT. DR. TRAN AND SHE WASN'T EXPECTING THIS BUT YOU KNOW, IF YOU HAVE A MOUNTAIN TO MOVE, THIS IS THE WOMAN THIS IS THE PERSON THAT YOU WANT TO DO IT. AND I'VE BEEN IN SEVERAL.WE CAN'T DO THIS. WE JUST CAN'T.
THESE MACHINES HAVE BEEN HERE.
THEY'VE BEEN FUNDED BY GRANTS AND THEY'RE GONE.
AND IT WILL BE THE CENTER FOR A COMMUNITY THAT RECOGNIZES THAT ADVANCING SKILLS IS PART OF THEIR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IMPERATIVE, AND THAT WILL BE A CENTER FOR THAT. AND SO GETTING RID OF OLD STUFF AND PUTTING NEW STUFF IN THERE.
ANY OTHER TRUSTEE ANNOUNCEMENTS.
TRUSTEE. GARCIA, YOU GOOD? OKAY. I WILL JUST SAY FOR MY ANNOUNCEMENTS THAT I REALLY DID ENJOY ATTENDING THE GRADUATIONS THIS PAST MONTH.
THE BACHELOR'S DEGREE CEREMONY IN PARTICULAR WAS VERY SPECIAL.
COURTING THE COURTING CEREMONY FOR THE BACHELOR'S DEGREE RECIPIENTS.
YOU COULD REALLY ENGAGE WITH OUR GRADUATES.
SO IT'S GREAT TO SEE THAT HAVE GRADUATES FROM THAT PROGRAM.
I KNOW DALLAS COLLEGE PLAYED A BIG ROLE IN GETTING THAT THROUGH AND THERE WAS LOTS OF VISITS TO AUSTIN THIS PAST LEGISLATIVE SESSION, SO THANK YOU FOR DOING THAT AND IMPROVING IMPROVING EVERYTHING FOR ALL 50 COMMUNITY COLLEGES IN TEXAS.
AND I WOULD JUST LIKE TO ECHO THAT THE BOARD IS BEHIND THE CHANCELLOR AND ALL HIS COMMENTS REGARDING DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION. AND SO WE SUPPORT DIVERSITY IN OUR COLLEGE.
AND LASTLY, FOR THIS MONTH, WE HAVE ONLY ONE RETIREE TO RECOGNIZE, RICHARD LEWIS, WHO SERVED SEVEN YEARS WITH DALLAS COLLEGE. WE WISH YOU WELL IN RETIREMENT.
AND WITH THAT, WE WILL MOVE ON TO ITEM SEVEN.
DOES ANYONE HAVE A CONFLICT THAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO DECLARE? OKAY, NOW WE WILL MOVE ON TO THE CONSENT AGENDA AND WE WILL BE REMOVING.
[8. Consent Agenda]
WICKETS AT EIGHT POINT.I THINK IT'S ALREADY BEEN MOVED.
NO, IT'S STILL ON HERE, ISN'T IT? YEAH, IT'S OKAY.
SO I WOULD LIKE TO ENTERTAIN A MOTION TO APPROVE 8.1 AND 8.2.
ANY ABSTENTIONS? AND TRUSTEE GARCIA, SINCE YOU ARE VIRTUAL OR DID WE LOSE HER? WE JUST LOST HER. OKAY, WELL, NEVER MIND, THEN.
I WAS GOING TO ASK HER FOR HER VOTE, BUT I GUESS WE LOST HER.
[9. Individual Items]
CAN I GET A MOTION TO APPROVE? SO MOVED. SECOND.OKAY, WE GOT THAT FIRST AND SECOND.
OKAY. ITEM TEN. WE HAVE INFORMATIVE REPORTS.
[10. Informative Reports]
DO WE HAVE ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS ON EACH ONE? OKAY, I'M JOKING.I NEVER KNOW. SOMETIMES YOU DO HAVE QUESTIONS.
WE DO NOT NEED AN EXECUTIVE SESSION TODAY.
THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF DALLAS COLLEGE IS NOW ADJOURNED.
