THANK YOU. WE WILL NOW STAND FOR THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE.

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE REPUBLIC, WHICH STANDS ONE NATION UNDER GOD WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE.

HONORED TO SEE YOU IN TEXAS.

ONE, ONE, ONE.

MS.. MOLINA DO WE HAVE ANY CITIZENS DESIRING TO ADDRESS THE BOARD TODAY? MADAM CHAIR. THANK YOU.

WE WILL NOW BEGIN OUR MEETING TODAY WITH SOME SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS.

[5.1. Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Scholars Convention Highlights and Awards]

CHANCELLOR LENNON, WOULD YOU LIKE TO INTRODUCE OUR SPEAKERS? THANK YOU, MADAM CHAIR. SO WE DO HAVE A NUMBER OF SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS WE'RE DOING TODAY.

WE'RE AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER, SO WE HAVE A LOT OF STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF AND OTHERS THAT WE WANT TO RECOGNIZE.

WE'RE STARTING WITH PTK, AND SO I'LL MENTION A LITTLE BIT ABOUT PTK, WHICH IS OUR HONOR SOCIETY.

DALLAS COLLEGE HAS A LONG HISTORY OF PARTICIPATING WITH PTK AND AN ACTIVE CHAPTER AT EACH CAMPUS.

CURRENTLY, THERE ARE OVER 2200 MEMBERS OF PTK AT DALLAS COLLEGE RECENTLY, WE HAD DELEGATES FROM ALL CAMPUSES COMPRISED OF ABOUT 72 STUDENTS, 14 ADVISORS AND SIX EXECUTIVE LEADERS TRAVELED TO COLUMBUS, OHIO, FOR THE PTK CATALYST 2023 ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION.

I HAD THE PLEASURE OF ATTENDING THAT AND TO SEE THESE AMAZING STUDENTS IN ACTION.

AND THIS TRIP ALLOWED AN OPPORTUNITY TO RECOGNIZE OUR ACADEMICALLY HIGHEST ACHIEVING STUDENTS AND ALLOW THE CHAPTERS TO PROVIDE EXPERIENCES OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOMS AND INTERACTIONS WITH LEADERSHIP AND OTHERS, AND CERTAINLY ENGAGE WITH PEERS FROM FROM AROUND THE STATE AND FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY.

SO I'D LIKE TO ASK DR. FLOYD TO COME UP AND SHARE A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT PTK, AND THEN WE'LL TALK ABOUT OUR OUTSTANDING STUDENTS.

TODAY YOU'RE GOING TO HEAR ABOUT FOUR SPECIFIC ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT PROGRAMING ACTIVITIES COMING UNIQUELY OUT OF ACADEMIC AREAS.

TO BE CLEAR, THESE ARE NOT CLUBS, BUT RATHER FACULTY DRIVEN ACADEMIC EXPERIENCES THAT HELP STUDENTS CONTEXTUALIZE LEARNING, COMPETE AND HONE THEIR LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL.

SEVERAL OF THESE INITIATIVES ARE LED FROM OUR SPECIAL ACADEMIC PROGRAM AREAS, WHICH INCLUDE HONORS SKILLS, USA, PTK SERVICE LEARNING AND OTHER ACADEMIC DRIVEN PROGRAMS AND ACADEMIC SERVICES.

WE HAVE SUCCESSFULLY BEEN ABLE TO COALESCE PROGRAMING FROM OUR SEVEN CAMPUSES BASED ON THESE ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT EXPERIENCES ACROSS THE WHOLE OF DALLAS COLLEGE. IN SOME CASES, IN DOING THIS, WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MORE THAN DOUBLE OUR STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN THESE LIFE CHANGING OPPORTUNITIES.

DR. GREG MORRIS, A SENIOR VICE PROVOST FOR ACADEMIC SERVICES, WILL COME UP AND PRESENT PTK.

WELL, GOOD AFTERNOON, EVERYBODY. DR.

FLOYD, THANK YOU SO MUCH, DR.

LON AND MEMBERS OF THE BOARD.

IT'S A REAL PRIVILEGE TO BE ABLE TO JUST SHARE A FEW MOMENTS ABOUT THE AMAZING GROUP OF STUDENTS, FACULTY, ADVISORS AND STAFF ADVISORS WHO ARE HERE TODAY.

AS YOU MENTIONED, WE JUST CAME BACK FROM CANADA, SO WE WERE ON A BIT OF A HIGH.

AND JUST TO GIVE A LITTLE BIT OF CONTEXT BEFORE WE ASK A COUPLE OF OUR STUDENTS TO SPEAK.

PTK REPRESENTS ABOUT 300,000 STUDENTS.

THESE ARE PROBABLY THE MOST HIGH ACHIEVING ACADEMIC STUDENTS ACROSS THE NATION AND SOME INTERNATIONALLY.

THERE WERE OVER 1200 CHAPTERS AT THIS NATIONAL CONFERENCE THAT WE JUST CAME BACK FROM THAT DR.

RONAN MENTIONED.

THEY GIVE OUT MAYBE 50 TO 75 KEY AWARDS, BOTH TO INDIVIDUALS, BUT ALSO CHAPTERS.

TODAY, I JUST WANTED TO MENTION SOME OF THE WORDS WE WON.

AND JUST GOING TO GIVE YOU AGAIN, CONTEXT OF OUR DALLAS COLLEGE IS REALLY LEADING IN THIS SPACE AND REALLY NOT US.

[00:05:02]

OUR STUDENTS AND OUR FACULTY ARE REALLY LEADING IN THIS SPACE.

THIS YEAR ALONE AND I'VE GOT TO START WITH DR.

LOWMAN. DR. LOWMAN RECEIVED THE PARAGON AWARD THAT'S GIVEN TO NEW PRESIDENTS AND CHANCELLORS.

WE ALSO HAD SEVERAL FACULTY WHO WERE RECOGNIZED FOR BEING KEY ADVISORS.

DR. JEFF MANZI, DR.

SHERI BOYD, DEBORAH JENSEN AND THEN WE HAD SEVERAL STUDENTS, TWO OF WHICH YOU'RE GOING TO MEET TODAY THAT ALSO RECEIVED AWARDS.

AND AGAIN, YOU KNOW, IN A SPACE WHERE YOU'RE REPRESENTING ABOUT 300,000 STUDENTS AND WE'RE REPRESENTING ON THE STAGE SOMEWHERE TO 5 TO 10 TIMES ACROSS OUR ORGANIZATION IS PRETTY IMPRESSIVE.

IN ADDITION TO SOME OF THE INDIVIDUAL AWARDS WE'VE WON, WE ALSO RECEIVED RECOGNITION FOR OUR CHAPTER AWARDS, AND THESE WERE AWARDS.

WE DO HAVE SEVEN CHAPTERS.

ONE OF THOSE WE'VE TRIED TO DO IN THE PTK SPACE IS CONTINUE TO HONOR THE CAMPUS PERSPECTIVE AND THE CULTURE THAT EACH ONE OF OUR CAMPUS CHAPTERS HAVE.

AND SO WE HAD RICH GNAGE CHAPTER, CEDAR VALLEY, NORTH LAKE WERE ALL RECIPIENTS OF SOME OF THESE AWARDS.

BUT WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, I REALLY WANT TO FEATURE A COUPLE OF OUR STUDENTS.

BUT BEFORE I DO, I DO WANT TO RECOGNIZE SHAWNDA KIND OF TOUCHED ON THIS.

THESE PROGRAMS DON'T HAPPEN UNLESS FACULTY DEEPLY INVEST IN THIS WORK, AND THERE ARE FACULTY ADVISORS AND STAFF ADVISORS THAT GIVE THEIR TIME FREELY. AND I'M TALKING HOUR UPON HOUR HELPING STUDENTS WITH THESE KEY PROJECTS THAT IMPACT NOT ONLY OUR CAMPUSES, BUT REALLY IMPACT THE LIVES OF THESE STUDENTS. SO I JUST WANT TO SAY A SPECIAL THANKS.

I'M GOING TO TRY TO MENTION THEM BECAUSE I THINK THEY'RE IMPORTANT, TOO.

SO DR. CASSANDRA BUCK, DR.

TOMMY THOMPSON.

CURTIS LEE. I KNOW JENNIFER MCGUIRE IS HERE.

UH, DR.

SHERRY BOYD AND DOUG JENSEN, TWO OF WHICH ACTUALLY WON AWARDS THERE AS WELL.

IF I MISSED ANYBODY, I APOLOGIZE.

BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH.

SO NOW THE BEST PART, WE'VE GOT TWO STUDENTS WHO WOULD HAVE TO COME UP AND SPEAK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THEIR OWN PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE, BUT ALSO A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THEIR INVOLVEMENT.

AND FIRST IS QUINCY SMITH.

QUINCY. GOOD EVENING.

COUNCILMAN CHAIR.

BRAVO AND TRUSTEES.

OKAY. PHI BETA KAPPA HAS TAUGHT ME A MULTITUDE OF VARIOUS LEADERSHIP SKILLS THROUGH INTEGRITY, WORK ETHIC, PASSION AND COLLABORATION.

THROUGH THIS PROGRAM HAS TAUGHT ME A LOT AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS.

IT HAS BROUGHT ME ALL THE WAY FROM BEING ON THE MOON IN 2021.

I JOINED CATALYST IN MAY 2022 AND WE WENT TO DENVER.

THROUGH BEING AT DENVER, I WAS ABLE TO GAIN CONNECTIONS AND DIFFERENT INTERACTIONS WITH MULTIPLE STATES, NOT JUST TEXAS BUT DIFFERENT COUNTRIES OVERALL.

AND ONE THING THAT I LEARNED WAS THAT THE WORKSHOPS AND SPEECHES HAD EMBRACED ME.

JUST ONE JUST DIFFERENT WAYS ON HOW TO BE A BETTER LEADER AND A BETTER PRESIDENT FOR MY TEAM.

I WAS ABLE TO TAKE BACK THE INFORMATION.

GIVER. AND I WAS ABLE TO USE THIS INFORMATION TO GAIN TWO OFFICERS BY THE NAME OF JONATHAN AND TRAVIS.

I WAS ABLE I WAS ABLE TO USE THESE TWO OFFICERS IN MY TEAM AND WE WENT THROUGH THE 2023 CALENDARS, WHICH WAS THIS YEAR, AND WE WERE ABLE TO WIN DIFFERENT AWARDS, SUCH AS MOST DISTINGUISHED CHAPTER.

OKAY. AND WE GOT INTO THE TOP 100 CHAPTERS OUT OF INTERNATIONALLY IN THE ENTIRE WAR, IN THE ENTIRE WORLD.

UM. AND BRICK, OHIO HAS TAUGHT ME SOMETHING NEW WITH THE WORKSHOPS THAT WERE GIVEN.

NOT ONLY THAT, I'VE LEARNED TO SPEAK WITH DIFFERENT PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, BUT I'VE ALSO LEARNED THAT IT'S IMPORTANT TO LEARN MULTIPLE VERSIONS OF TEAMWORK AND TO ALSO BE ABLE TO USE THIS TEAMWORK SKILLS TO MAKE CONNECTIONS THROUGHOUT DIFFERENT COMPANIES AND OTHER RESOURCES OUTSIDE OF DALLAS COLLEGE.

AFTER OHIO, I TOOK BACK THIS INFORMATION AND I LOOKED MORE AT IT.

[00:10:04]

IT MADE A HUGE IMPACT ON ME.

AND SO JUST BEING FROM ONE CHAPTER, I MEAN, I'M SORRY, ONE MEMBER NOT THINKING THAT WOULD HAVE ANY CHAPTER MEMBERS AT ALL.

I WAS ABLE TO GET AT LEAST TWO AND USE THESE TWO PEOPLE TO HELP ME JUST BE WELL KNOWN.

BRICK DALLAS COLLEGE WELL KNOWN THROUGH CEDAR VALLEY.

AND THIS HAS HELPED ME IN MULTIPLE WAYS THROUGH HELPING ME WITH WORK AND ALSO.

MY DIFFERENT JOBS IN DIFFERENT STUDIES OUTSIDE OF DALLAS COLLEGE.

THANK YOU.

SO OUR LAST SPEAKER TODAY, I KIND OF WANT TO CUE HER UP BECAUSE SHE'S A BIG DEAL.

SO IS QUINCY. QUINCY IS A BIG DEAL, TOO.

UM, YOU KNOW, I MENTIONED ABOUT HOW THE LARGE THE SCALE OF PTK IS.

UM, THERE WAS A SERIES OF FOUR INTERNATIONAL VICE PRESIDENTS AND A PRESIDENT THAT IS ELECTED EACH YEAR AMONG THESE 300,000 STUDENTS TO REPRESENT 300,000 COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS IN THE NATION.

WE ARE HONORED TODAY THAT ONE OF OUR DALLAS COLLEGE STUDENTS FROM NORTH LAKE WAS VOTED INTO THIS PRESTIGIOUS POSITION.

AND SO I'D LIKE TO INVITE HER TO THE STAGE.

LETITIA LARANJEIRA.

ONE THING. OH, SORRY.

HELLO. ONE THING THAT I LEARNED WITH BTK IS THAT MY FAVORITE THING IS COMMUNITY.

SO MY VOICE IS NOT ONLY MY OWN TODAY, SO I SPEAK IN NAME OF MY CHAPTER AND ALL OTHER SIX CHAPTERS.

UM. DALLAS COLLEGE HAS SEVEN PHI DELTA KAPPA CHAPTERS AND THREE OF MY EXCHANGES WITH MEMBER ON ALL CAMPUSES.

I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT PHI DELTA KAPPA REPRESENTS A SUPPORT SYSTEM THAT WE WOULDN'T WE WOULDN'T FIND ELSEWHERE.

NAVIGATING THROUGH COLLEGE LIFE IS CHALLENGING, AND WITHOUT PROPER GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT, STUDENTS MIGHT FEEL UNMOTIVATED.

SO PHI DELTA KAPPA ALLOWS THOSE STUDENTS TO REALIZE OUR FULL POTENTIAL, THE SKILLS WE ALREADY HAVE AND THE ONES THAT WE CAN WORK ON.

GETTING THE SOCIETY'S FOCUS ON STUDENT SUCCESS PUSHES US TO ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE, BUT ALSO UNDERSTAND OUR LIMITS.

AND BY BEING ACTIVE AND TAKING LEADERSHIP POSITIONS, WE GROW PROFESSIONALLY, ACADEMICALLY AND PERSONALLY.

IT IS NO SECRET THAT DALLAS COLLEGE STUDENTS HAVE BEEN MAKING A MARK IN THEIR PROJECTS AND WORK ALL OVER THE SEVEN CAMPUSES WITH BTK.

AND THE PROOF ARE THE SEVERAL AWARDS THAT OUR CHAPTERS GOT RECENTLY ON TEXAS REGION CONFERENCE, BUT ALSO ON THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE PTK CATALYST, JUST TO NAME A FEW.

THE RICHLAND CHAPTER COLLEGE PROJECT THUNDERLINK WON MOST DISTINGUISHED CHAPTER DISTINGUISHED PROJECT IN ALL TEXAS REGION.

BOTH RICHLAND AND SILVER VALLEY CHAPTERS WERE RANKED ON TOP 41 OUT OF 1300 CHAPTERS INTERNATIONALLY, AND THE NORTHLAKE CHAPTER IS CURRENTLY HOLDING TWO POSITIONS. SO WE HAVE A REGIONAL OFFICER HERE, CHRISTIAN HEWITT.

UM, HE IS ONE OF THE VICE PRESIDENTS OF TEXAS REGION AND I MYSELF AS INTERNATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT FOR DIVISION TWO.

I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT THE STUDENT LEADERS THAT WON AWARDS.

GRANT GANZEL FROM BROOKHAVEN BROOKHAVEN CAMPUS.

HE GOT DISTINGUISHED MEMBER AND MYSELF AND RICE O'MALLEY WE GOT DISTINGUISHED CHAPTER OFFICERS.

UM, ONE THING ABOUT DISTINGUISHED CHAPTER OFFICERS, THEY'RE ONLY GIVEN TO 30 STUDENTS AND WE ARE THE ONLY CAMPUS THAT GOT TWO OFFICERS ON THIS AWARD.

UM, AND, WELL, AFTER A CONVERSATION WITH MY ADVISOR LAST YEAR, I DECIDED TO RUN FOR INTERNATIONAL OFFICER.

THIS IS THE HIGHEST POSITION A STUDENT CAN GET IN THE SOCIETY.

AND I WAS INSECURE.

UM, MOST OF THE CANDIDATES HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH PTK FOR OVER A YEAR AND THEY HOLD LEADERSHIP POSITIONS AT LOCAL AND REGIONAL LEVELS.

UM, I WAS A CHAPTER OFFICER IS STILL WORKING ON MYSELF AND MY LEADERSHIP STYLE, BUT I DECIDED TO GIVE IT A TRY.

UM, MY CHAPTER SAW SOMETHING IN ME AND I WAS SUPPORTED AND ENCOURAGED AND NEVER ONCE THEY LET ME BELIEVE I COULDN'T MAKE IT.

UM, THE PROCESS WAS ENRICHING AND ALLOWED ME PERSONAL GROWTH AND ALSO SHOWED ME HOW FAR A STUDENT CAN GO WHEN WE ARE PROVIDED WITH THE RIGHT RESOURCES.

UM, NOW I'M INTERNATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT OF DIVISION TWO, REPRESENTING OVER 378,000 STUDENTS IN 11 NATIONS.

UM, I SAY ALL THAT BECAUSE IT'S JUST TO EXEMPLIFY HOW FAR STUDENTS CAN GO WITH DELTA KAPPA.

AND WE REALLY APPRECIATE THE SUPPORT THAT DALLAS COLLEGE GIVES TO THE SOCIETY ON ALL SEVEN CAMPUSES.

[00:15:06]

SO YEAH, THAT'S IT.

THANK YOU. AND I WILL SAY LATISHA'S IS A LITTLE MODEST.

IT'S BEEN A LITTLE MODEST AS A HUGE, HUGE DEAL THAT SHE WAS SELECTED FOR THIS.

HER PEERS HAD TO VOTE FOR HER.

SHE HAD TO GIVE GET UP AND GIVE SPEECHES IN FRONT OF EVERYONE THAT SHE MEMORIZED HER SPEECHES.

IT WAS AMAZING TO TO WATCH HER IN ACTION.

SO SO CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU.

SO. ALSO DON'T WANT TO TAKE YOUR TIME.

BUT AS INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS FROM NORTH LAKE, WE HAVE A LETTER THAT WE'D LIKE TO GIVE YOU.

SO ON MY WAY OUT, I'LL GIVE IT TO YOU GUYS.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

PICTURE. PICTURE.

SO THEY SAID, I DON'T KNOW. I THINK IT'S ON THE SIDE.

I THINK IT'S BIGGER.

YOU CAN OPEN IT. TEXAS REGION.

BUT WHAT'S THE NAME? WHAT'S THE NAME OF IT? THERE YOU GO. OKAY.

I AM SORRY TO INTERRUPT THE MEETING, BUT WE DO HAVE A MEDAL FOR THE CHANCELLOR, JUSTIN LENNON FOR THE HONOR.

NEW PRESIDENT THAT WE RECEIVED AT THE CONFERENCE.

THE REGIONAL CONFERENCE FOR PHI THETA KAPPA.

THANK YOU. CONGRATULATIONS, DR.

ONO. THANK YOU.

SO CARE TO TAKE IT UP? TAKE IT UP? YEAH. YEAH.

OPEN IT. OH, SORRY.

READING IT. AND THEN WROTE A FOLLOW UP.

OKAY, SO HERE WE GO.

[00:20:04]

YEAH, LET'S GO.

THANK YOU. THANK.

THIS THING.

OKAY. NEXT GROUP.

BIERI. OH, MY.

I'M REAL STRONG. SHE'S REAL.

ALL RIGHT, NOW WE HAVE THE THEATER.

[5.2. Dallas College Theater Awards]

YEP. NOW WE HAVE SOME THEATER AWARDS TO RECOGNIZE.

RICHLAND CAMPUS HAS ENTERED SEVEN PRODUCTIONS AND THE KENNEDY CENTER AMERICAN COLLEGE THEATER FESTIVAL.

THIS YEAR, THERE WERE APPROXIMATELY 250 PRODUCTIONS ELIGIBLE FOR THE REGION.

SIX AREA, WHICH CONSISTS OF COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES IN TEXAS, NEW MEXICO, ARKANSAS, LOUISIANA AND OKLAHOMA.

AND SO ONE OF THOSE PRODUCTIONS HAS BEEN SELECTED TO ADVANCE IN THE FESTIVAL.

AND SO I'D LIKE TO ASK DR.

FLOYD TO COME UP AND SHARE ADDITIONAL DETAILS.

UH, THANK YOU, DR. LON, AND NOT MANY ADDITIONAL DETAILS, JUST REALLY OVEREMPHASIZING HOW EXCITING IT IS FOR US TO BE SELECTED AND FEATURED AS A KENNEDY CENTER AMERICAN COLLEGE THEATER AWARD GOING INTO THIS COMPETITION.

THIS IS A FIRST FOR DALLAS COLLEGE.

WE'RE EXTREMELY EXCITED AND AT THIS TIME I'M GOING TO HAVE MY VICE PROVOST FOR THE COMMUNICATION, ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT AND DESIGN SCHOOL. WELL, HAVE A SILKY JONES COME UP AND JOIN US.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

DR. FLOYD, CHAIR BRAVO, DR.

LENNON AND OUR BOARD OF TRUSTEES.

IS SUCH AN HONOR TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO INTRODUCE YOU TO OUR THEATER DEPARTMENT AND THEATER FACULTY.

THE KENNEDY CENTER REGIONAL FESTIVAL IS BUT ONE REPRESENTATION OF THE INCREDIBLE WORK OUR ART DEPARTMENT IS DOING BOTH WITHIN OUR COLLEGE AND FOR OUR COMMUNITY.

THIS IS A FIRST.

AS DR. FLOYD MENTIONED, THERE ARE ONLY FIVE PERFORMANCES THAT WERE SELECTED TO PERFORM AT THE KENNEDY CENTER FESTIVAL IN THE FIRST TIME IN DALLAS COLLEGE HISTORY THAT DALLAS COLLEGE HAS BEEN SELECTED IN ADDITION TO PERFORMING.

OUR STUDENTS BROUGHT IN 11 AWARDS FOR THEIR PRODUCTION AT RICHLAND AND THREE NATIONAL AWARDS, WHICH YOU'LL HEAR MORE ABOUT SHORTLY.

STUDENTS ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN WORKSHOPS WITH INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS AND COMPETE IN INDIVIDUAL EVENTS.

YOU'LL HEAR MORE SHORTLY FROM PROFESSOR LONG.

THE SPECIFIC HONORS THAT WERE AFFORDED TO OUR STUDENTS AS WELL AS SOME DIRECT PATHWAYS TO CAREER OPPORTUNITIES STARTING AS SOON AS THIS SUMMER.

NOW I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE TO THE PODIUM PROFESSOR ANDY LONG, WHO HAS BEEN A FULL TIME FACULTY MEMBER AT DALLAS COLLEGE FOR 12 YEARS.

COMES TO US WITH OVER 15 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD AS A DIRECTOR AND PERFORMER AND ARTIST IN RESIDENCE FROM DALLAS CHILDREN'S THEATER, HE RECEIVED THE 2011 FOCUS ON EXCELLENCE AWARD FROM DALLAS COLLEGE RICHLAND CAMPUS.

THANK YOU TO ANDY FOR YOUR EXTRAORDINARY VISION AND LEADERSHIP.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH. BRAVO AND BOARD.

AND I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO EXTEND A PERSONAL THANK YOU.

SEVERAL OF THE BOARD MEMBERS CAME TO OUR CAMPUS AND SAW THE PRODUCTION.

AND SO I REALLY WANT TO THANK YOU AND IT MEANS A LOT TO THE STUDENTS AND TO THE FACULTY AND STAFF.

WHEN WE SEE BOARD MEMBERS WALKING AROUND OUR CAMPUS WHERE WE ARE.

I'D LIKE TO SEND SOME THANKS.

THEATER IS A COLLABORATIVE ART FORM.

NO ONE DOES IT ALONE.

SO CHEER ON AND THANK YOU.

THANK YOU TO DR.

FLOYD AND TO VASUKI JONES, OUR VICE PROVOST.

THANK YOU TO DEAN GERARD PALETTE AND TO OUR INTERIM CHAIR OF PERFORMING ARTS, SCOTT VENTERS, AND OUR LIVE EVENT MANAGER, JENNIFER OWEN, LOCALLY ON THE RICHLAND CAMPUS. I'D LIKE TO THANK SOME GREAT COLLABORATIVE SUPPORT FROM OUR PRESIDENT, DR.

KAY EGGLESTON AND SENIOR DIRECTOR JANET JAMES, AND FROM OUR THEATER TECHNICIANS, GEORGE HAGEL AND CHARLES SELF.

THEY DID A MAGNIFICENT JOB IN HELPING US PUT THIS PRODUCTION TOGETHER.

TO GIVE YOU A LITTLE BIT OF PERSPECTIVE, THE KENNEDY CENTER AMERICAN COLLEGE THEATER FESTIVAL, THERE WERE APPROXIMATELY 2000 PRODUCTIONS IN THE ENTIRE UNITED STATES.

OUT OF THOSE 2000 PRODUCTIONS, APPROXIMATELY 41 ADVANCED TO REGION FESTIVALS.

THERE ARE EIGHT REGIONS IN THE UNITED STATES.

AND THESE THESE ARE MADE UP PRIMARILY ABOUT 85% BY UNIVERSITIES, MANY OF THEM WITH ADVANCED GRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS WHERE THEIR PRODUCTIONS MIGHT INCLUDE SECOND OR THIRD YEAR MFA GRAD STUDENTS.

AND SO THIS IS THE TOP LEVEL OF COMPETITION.

YOU CAN YOU CAN ADVANCE TO.

WE DID WIN 11 INDIVIDUAL AWARDS WHEN THE PRODUCTION WAS MOUNTED AT THE RICHLAND CAMPUS IN OCTOBER.

IN DECEMBER, IT WAS SELECTED BY THE COMMITTEE TO ADVANCE TO THE REGIONAL FESTIVAL.

SO WE REMOUNTED THE SHOW AT RICHLAND IN FEBRUARY.

[00:25:03]

THEN WE TOOK IT TO THE REGIONAL FESTIVAL AND WHILE THERE, THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE FROM THE KENNEDY CENTER TRAVELS TO ALL OF THE REGIONS TO SEE ALL OF THE PRODUCTIONS.

AND WE WERE AWARDED THREE NATIONAL AWARDS.

AND I'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU, FIRST OF ALL, TWO COMPANY AWARDS THAT WERE GIVEN.

ONE WAS THE CITIZEN ARTIST AWARD, WHICH I THINK IS A FANTASTIC TITLE, THE CITIZEN ARTIST AWARD, AND I'M QUOTING FROM THE KENNEDY CENTER HERE, RECOGNIZES PROGRAMS IN HIGHER EDUCATION USING THEATRICAL PRODUCTION TO PROMOTE LONG TERM SOCIETAL IMPACT THROUGH AN ARTISTIC LENS, TO ENCOURAGE EMPATHETIC EXPLORATION OF THE COMPLEX, COMPLEX, CULTURAL AND PHYSICAL WORLD, AND TO ADVOCATE FOR JUSTICE ON CAMPUS AND THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.

OUR PRODUCTION WAS CENTERED AROUND AUTISM AND AND WE WERE CHAMPIONING SOME FAMILIES.

IT WAS BASED UPON A TRUE STORY OF A LADY THAT TOOK PLACE HERE IN DALLAS, TEXAS.

OUR SECOND AWARD THAT WE RECEIVED AS A COMPANY IS THE DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT IN THE FACILITATION OF A BRAVE REHEARSAL SPACE WHICH CELEBRATES TEACHING ARTISTS WHO CREATE A REHEARSAL ROOM COMMUNITY THAT PRIORITIZES THE MENTAL, PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING OF THEIR STUDENT ARTISTS, EMPOWERING THEM TO SAFELY ENGAGE WITH CHALLENGING THEATRICAL STORIES.

WE WERE ONE OF NINE PRODUCTIONS IN THE UNITED STATES TO WIN THAT AWARD AND THE ONLY COMMUNITY COLLEGE, WHICH I THINK IS PRETTY COOL.

OKAY. I'VE GOT A COUPLE OF STUDENTS THAT ARE GOING TO COME UP AND SPEAK TO YOU.

THE FIRST ONE IS JUST ADORE HER.

SHE'S ONE OF MY STRAIGHT-A STUDENTS.

SHE'S ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL.

AND SHE AT THE REGIONAL FESTIVAL, SHE WAS NAMED ONE OF THE TOP 32 ACTORS IN REGION SIX, WHICH IS, AGAIN, ALL OF TEXAS, OKLAHOMA, ARKANSAS, LOUISIANA AND NEW MEXICO.

MISS KENDRA BAILEY.

EACH TIME I HAD A SPEECH PREPARED AND IT WAS I THINK IT WAS PRETTY WELL DONE.

BUT NOW THAT I SPEAK BEFORE YOU, I FEEL LIKE MY WORDS.

I JUST SPEAK FROM A PLACE OF EMPOWERMENT AT THE MOMENT.

BUT THERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT THINGS THAT I WOULD LIKE TO SAY.

FIRST AND FOREMOST, I WOULD LIKE TO USE THIS PLATFORM TO SHED LIGHT ON ON THOSE AT DALLAS COLLEGE WHO HELP MAKE OUR SUCCESS POSSIBLE.

THAT INCLUDES AHAVA SILKY JONES.

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK HER.

GERARD. I'M SORRY IF I MISPRONOUNCE NAMES.

OKAY. THANK YOU.

SCOTT WINTERS, GEORGE HAGEL, JENNIFER OWEN AND ANDY LONG, AS WELL AS OUR ADJUNCT STAFF MEMBERS AS WELL.

AND I BELIEVE THAT ALL OF THESE PEOPLE FERVENTLY BELIEVE THAT THESE PEOPLE DESERVE RESPECT, RECOGNITION AND BURIES THE THREE R'S.

UM, MY THOUGHTS MAY NOT BE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OR PROFOUND, BUT I DO BELIEVE THAT MY STORY IS A PART OF THE COLLECTIVE OF THOSE HERE AT DALLAS COLLEGE.

AND I DON'T TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK HERE LIGHTLY.

IT IS A GREAT HONOR AND I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU ALL FOR ALLOWING ME THE SPACE.

UM, SO IF I WAS ANY LESS BRAVE, I THINK I WOULD COME UP HERE AND SAY LIKE, THANK YOU GUYS FOR EVERYTHING.

BUT THERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT I WOULD LIKE TO SAY.

I WOULD LIKE TO SAY FIRST AND FOREMOST, THAT THE ARTS IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO THRIVE AND TO BECOME THEM THEIR TRUE SELVES.

UM, AS YOU CAN SEE, ALL OF MY BEAUTIFUL CLASSMATES HERE, WE HAVE SEVERAL MEMBERS WHO ARE ACTUALLY DIAGNOSED WITH AUTISM.

SO THIS STORY WAS IMPORTANT TO THEM AS WELL.

WE ALSO HAVE PEOPLE WHO IDENTIFY AS A PART OF THE LGBTQ PLUS COMMUNITY, ALSO TRANS INDIVIDUALS AS WELL.

AND WE RECEIVE THIS HONOR FOR THE REHEARSAL SPACE BECAUSE WE ALLOW THESE PEOPLE TO USE THIS PLATFORM TO COMPLETELY BE THEMSELVES COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY.

AND THAT IS SOMETHING THAT IS IMPORTANT TO ALL OF US.

I HOPE YOU GUYS WOULD AGREE.

UM, AND I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU GUYS AS WELL FOR ENCOURAGING THOSE AT DALLAS COLLEGE TO BE THEMSELVES THROUGH ALL OF THE THE EFFORTS THAT YOU HAVE.

UM, BUT ALSO I'D LIKE TO SAY THAT MY STORY AS A STUDENT AT DALLAS COLLEGE IS SIMILAR TO OTHERS, BUT IT'S UNIQUE BECAUSE I'M ME.

UM, I STARTED OFF AS A STUDENT AT DALLAS COLLEGE, NOT AN ACTOR AT ALL.

MY DAD WANTED TO BE ME, TO BE AN ENGINEERING MAJOR.

WE SEE HOW THAT WORKED OUT.

UM, AND, BUT I DID DECIDE TO TAKE AN ACTING CLASS BECAUSE I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE INTERESTED IN ARTS, WHERE I FOUND PROFESSOR LANG, AND HE ALWAYS ENCOURAGED ME TO LISTEN TO MYSELF TRULY AND FAITHFULLY, WHICH IS SOMETHING THAT NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE.

SO I'M GRATEFUL FOR HIM AND I'M GRATEFUL FOR DALLAS COLLEGE BECAUSE THAT ALSO ALLOWED ME AS WELL TO EMBRACE WHO I AM FULLY.

AND I THINK THAT KIND OF PAID OFF.

SO THANK YOU GUYS FOR THAT.

UM, BUT ALSO I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT THROUGHOUT THIS TRANSITION AT DALLAS COLLEGE, I BELIEVE THAT WE CAN ALL AGREE THAT IT'S BEEN KIND OF A LOT.

AND I APPRECIATE YOU GUYS FOR TRYING YOUR BEST AND YOUR HARDEST BECAUSE I'VE HEARD ALL OF THE THINGS THAT YOU'VE DONE TO HELP UNIFY US AS A COLLECTIVE.

[00:30:02]

BUT I DO BELIEVE THAT WE ARE EACH AND EVERY STUDENT IS WORTHY OF THE ATTENTION AND THE DEDICATION AND THE BRAVERY OF PEOPLE, OUR STAFF AND OUR FACULTY AS WELL.

SO I'D LIKE TO THANK YOU GUYS AT THE MOMENT.

YOU'RE CURRENTLY GETTING MORE PEOPLE IN OUR DEPARTMENT AND I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH FOR THAT BECAUSE I KNOW IF WE'VE DONE WHAT WE'VE DONE, WHAT WE HAD THIS YEAR, NEXT YEAR, WHAT'S WHAT'S TO COME? I KNOW IT'S GOING TO BE FANTASTIC.

SO I'D LIKE TO THANK YOU GUYS FOR THAT.

UM, ALSO, UM, PRETTY MUCH THE ONLY THING I'D LIKE TO SAY IS I WOULD LIKE TO END THIS SPEECH WITH THIS QUOTE FROM F SCOTT FITZGERALD.

I'M NOT EXACTLY THE MOST PRETTY SPEAKER, BUT I THINK HE IS.

SO I HOPE THESE WORDS MOVE YOU LIKE THE WAY THE WAY THEY MOVE ME.

SO HERE'S THE QUOTE.

FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH, IT'S NEVER TOO LATE.

OR IN ANY CASE, TO BE TOO EARLY TO BE WHOEVER YOU WANT TO BE.

THERE IS NO TIME LIMIT.

STOP WHENEVER YOU WANT.

YOU CAN CHANGE OR STAY THE SAME.

THERE ARE NO RULES TO THIS THING.

WE CAN MAKE THE BEST OR THE WORST OF IT.

I HOPE YOU MAKE THE BEST OF IT.

I HOPE YOU SEE THINGS THAT STARTLE YOU.

I HOPE YOU FEEL THINGS THAT YOU HAVE NEVER FELT BEFORE.

I HOPE YOU MEET PEOPLE WITH A DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW.

I HOPE YOU LIVE A LIFE THAT YOU'RE PROUD OF, AND IF YOU FIND THAT YOU'RE NOT, I HOPE YOU HAVE THE COURAGE TO START AGAIN.

THANK YOU. AND HUZZAH.

OUR FINAL STUDENT SPEAKER WON OUR THIRD AWARD NATIONAL AWARD.

THIS STUDENT WAS NAMED ONE OF 17 IN THE ENTIRE UNITED STATES TO WIN THE NATIONAL STAGE MANAGEMENT AWARD.

NOW, PART OF THEATER TRAINING IS NOT JUST PERFORMANCE, BUT IT'S ALSO PREPARING STUDENTS TO ENTER THE WORKFORCE.

WE HAVE AN ENTIRE WING OF THEATRICAL TRAINING THAT IS DEDICATED TO EVENT TECHNOLOGIES.

I'M NOT SURE IF YOU'RE AWARE, BUT DURING THE GREAT COVID SHUTDOWN THAT LASTED TWO YEARS, APPROXIMATELY 30% OF EVENT TECHNOLOGY WORKFORCE LEFT THE INDUSTRY. AND THEY'RE NOT COMING BACK.

AND THIS IS NOT JUST BACKED UP BY DATA, IT'S BACKED UP BY INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS THEMSELVES.

JUST YESTERDAY, WE HAD A MEETING WITH REPRESENTATIVES FROM INDUSTRY TO BEGIN DISCUSSIONS ABOUT CREATING AND IMPLEMENTING WORKFORCE CERTIFICATION TRAININGS IN TECHNICAL THEATER TO LEAD TOWARD DIRECT EMPLOYMENT.

THIS NEXT STUDENT IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THAT.

WE CURRENTLY TEACH A LOT OF THESE SKILLS IN TO OUR CREDIT TRANSFER STUDENTS.

WE'RE ALSO LOOKING TO TEACH THEM TOWARD OUR WORKFORCE CERTIFICATION STUDENTS.

THIS NEXT STUDENT NOT ONLY WON THE NATIONAL STAGE MANAGEMENT AWARD, BUT THEY'VE BEEN OFFERED AND ACCEPTED INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY.

THEY WILL THEY'RE BEING PAID TO MOVE AND FULL TIME EMPLOYMENT MAY 15TH THROUGH AUGUST 15TH, THEY WILL BE WORKING AT A VERY GOOD SALARY FOR THE INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN SANTA FE OPERA IN SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO, WHERE THEY WILL BE WORKING ON FIVE PRODUCTIONS AND THEN BRINGING ALL THAT KNOWLEDGE BACK TO US BECAUSE THEY'RE ONLY A FRESHMAN.

I'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE AVA STIPE.

HI, EVERYBODY.

GOOD AFTERNOON. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING US TODAY.

I JUST WANT TO TAKE A SECOND AND THANK ALL OF THE FACULTY AND STAFF AT DALLAS COLLEGE AND, OF COURSE, THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES.

I'M KIND OF BLANKING OUT AT THE MOMENT.

I'M A LITTLE EMBARRASSED.

SORRY. UM.

UH, I WANT TO TALK ABOUT MY STORY COMING TO DALLAS COLLEGE, BECAUSE THIS WAS NOT ORIGINALLY IN MY PLAN, BUT I'M SO HAPPY THAT I AM HERE.

I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL AS A HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR.

I WAS DRIVING MYSELF 6 TO 7 HOURS AWAY IN DIFFERENT STATES, JUST TOURING DIFFERENT CAMPUSES.

I GOT A LOT OF SCHOLARSHIP OFFERS, BUT I DON'T.

MY FAMILY DOESN'T HAVE THE FINANCIAL MEANS TO SEND ME AWAY TO COLLEGE, YOU KNOW, AS MANY AS MANY PARENTS DO.

SO EVENTUALLY I KIND OF GAVE UP.

I WAS BEING OFFERED TONS AND TONS OF SCHOLARSHIPS, AROUND 60 TO $80,000.

AND IT JUST STILL WASN'T ENOUGH.

AND MY ONE DAY ONE OF MY TEACHERS TOLD ME THAT I NEEDED TO GET IN CONTACT WITH PROFESSOR LONG.

IMMEDIATELY, I REACHED OUT TO HIM AND MS..

OWEN AND THEY GAVE ME A TOUR OF RICHLAND COLLEGE, AND THEY TOLD ME ALL ABOUT THE PROGRAM.

AND IT WAS EVERYTHING THAT I HAD SEEN AT ALL THE OTHER COLLEGES, BUT SO MUCH MORE.

AND I WAS THINKING TO MYSELF, THIS IS A COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

WHY? WHY DO THEY HAVE ALL OF THIS STUFF? WHY DO THEY HAVE MORE THAN THESE BIG PRESTIGIOUS UNIVERSITIES? AND I WAS LIKE, YOU KNOW, I'M GOING TO SAVE MYSELF SOME MONEY, YOU KNOW? BUT PROFESSOR LONG AND MISS OWEN GAVE ME AN OPPORTUNITY THAT I COULD NOT REFUSE.

THEY HAVE STOOD BY MY SIDE AND GUIDED ME TO SUCCESS.

I HAVE NEVER BEEN ONE WHO WAS CONFIDENT TO PRESENT MYSELF AS A PROFESSIONAL OR AS A REAL STAGE MANAGER.

BUT WITH THIS SHOW, I FEEL LIKE I'VE DEVELOPED AND GROWN SO MUCH AS A PERSON AND AS A PROFESSIONAL IN THIS IN MY DREAM INDUSTRY THAT IT'S JUST

[00:35:05]

IT'S AMAZING. THE SHOW THAT WE ALL CREATED TOGETHER WAS BEAUTIFUL.

THE THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE THAT WE IMPACTED EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, PEOPLE WOULD LEAVE THE THEATER CRYING.

THEIR LIVES WERE CHANGED.

I KNOW I WAS PERSONALLY IMPACTED.

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU GUYS, BUT IT TRULY WAS A BEAUTIFUL MOMENT.

AND THIS HAS BEEN AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE THAT I WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO FORGET.

AND, YOU KNOW, A LOT OF KIDS, THEY WANT TO GO TO ALL THESE BIG, CRAZY, EXPENSIVE UNIVERSITIES AND EVERYTHING THAT THE STUDENTS NEED.

IT'S ALL RIGHT HERE.

IT'S IN THE FACULTY, IT'S IN THE STAFF.

IT'S BEING LED IN THESE SMALLER CLASSROOMS, PEOPLE REALLY PAYING ATTENTION TO YOU.

AND I'M SO GRATEFUL TO YOU GUYS FOR BRINGING US MORE.

PROFESSOR LONG'S MISS OWENS MORE BUSINESS VENTURES.

YOU KNOW, JUST A LOT OF AMAZING PEOPLE WHO HELP US COME TOGETHER AS A COMMUNITY AND REALLY GROW AND DEVELOP OUR SKILLS.

AND I AM SO THANKFUL FOR MISS OWEN, ESPECIALLY.

SHE WOULD SIT ME DOWN AND HELP ME PREPARE FOR MY INTERVIEW WITH SANTA FE.

I WAS INITIALLY JUST GOING IN TO GET MY RESUME LOOKED OVER, BUT ANDY TOLD ME HE WAS LIKE, YOU NEED TO YOU NEED TO GET IN THERE AND DO YOUR THING, YOU KNOW? AND THEN IT TURNED OUT TO BE THIS.

AND I'M JUST I'M SO HAPPY AND I'M SO PROUD OF ALL OF MY FRIENDS AND JUST EVERYTHING THAT WE'VE DONE.

SHOUT OUT TO MILTON.

HE'S THE BEST ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER I'VE EVER HAD.

AND WITHOUT THE HELP OF ANDY AND EVERYBODY ELSE, IT JUST IT WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE AND I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN HERE TODAY.

SO THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH.

THAT'S OUR PRODUCTIONS.

ANY QUESTIONS FOR US? OH, MY GOD. GREAT WORK.

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH, EVERYBODY.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU. YEAH.

PHOTO. LET'S COME OVER HERE BEHIND ME.

THE CELEBRATION CONTINUES.

SO NOW WE WANT TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SKILLS USA.

[5.3. Skills USA Student Awards]

SKILLS USA IS A PARTNERSHIP OF STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND INDUSTRY WORKING TOGETHER TO ENSURE AMERICA HAS A SKILLED WORKFORCE, SERVES MORE THAN 331,000 STUDENTS AND INSTRUCTORS ANNUALLY AND HAS SERVED NEARLY 14 MILLION ANNUAL MEMBERS.

IT'S RECOGNIZED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF ED AND THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AS A SUCCESSFUL MODEL OF EMPLOYER DRIVEN WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT.

SO I'D LIKE TO ASK DR.

FLOYD TO COME UP YET AGAIN AND SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THESE STUDENTS.

THANK YOU, DR. LOUDEN.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT OUR ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT WORK IS THAT WE ARE EQUALLY COMMITTED TO TRADITIONAL TRANSFER STUDENTS AND OUR CAREER AND TECHNICAL PROGRAMS.

[00:40:05]

MANY OF YOU HAVE HEARD ABOUT THE AMAZING WORK WE ARE DOING WITH SKILLS USA, AND I WOULD LIKE TO ASK DEAN MARIA CALANDRO TO COME AND SHARE HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR REGIONAL AND STATE COMPETITION, WHERE WE WON QUITE A FEW CTE AWARDS.

MARIA. GOOD.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

DR. FLOYD CHANCELLOR, BOARD OF TRUSTEE.

MEMBERS. COLLEAGUES.

STUDENTS. THIS IS MY FAVORITE TIME OF THE YEAR.

WE ARE JUST CELEBRATING EVERYTHING THAT OUR STUDENTS AND OUR FACULTY HAVE DONE ALL YEAR, SO IT'S WORTHWHILE TO PUSH ALL THOSE PAPERS TO GET THEM TO WHERE THEY NEED TO GO.

YOU'VE HEARD ABOUT SKILLS USA BEFORE.

REMEMBER LAST YEAR WE CAME WITH TWO SCHOOLS OF THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, HOSPITALITY AND GLOBAL TRADE WITH CULINARY CULINARY ARTS.

AND WE BROUGHT SOME STUDENTS AND LET'S RECOGNIZE SHEILA HYDE, WHO HAS BEEN DOING THIS FOR YEARS IN EL CENTRO, BECAUSE, AS DR.

MORRIS SAID, THIS IS STUDENT CENTRIC, BUT IT'S FACULTY DRIVEN.

SO WE NEED THOSE ADVISORS, WE NEED THOSE CHAMPIONS.

BUT GUESS WHAT? WE HAVE MORE CHAMPIONS IN THE ROOM BECAUSE FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME WE HAVE THE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING, TECHNOLOGY, MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE MS WITH AN INTERACTIVE SIMULATION AND GAME TECHNOLOGY GAME DESIGN.

AND THEY WON GOLD FIRST TIME.

ISN'T THAT AMAZING? AND THEN THE SCHOOL OF MIT.

THEY HAD NEVER PARTICIPATED IN A WHILE, AND THEY WENT WITH A SMALL DELEGATION AND THIS YEAR THEY WENT WITH EVEN MORE STUDENTS.

SO WE HAVE AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY, CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINE TECHNOLOGY.

THEY WERE THEY WERE THERE COMPETING WITH THEIR HANDS AND WHATNOT.

BUT GUESS WHAT? THEY ALSO COMPETED IN TWO OTHER PARTS OF SKILLSUSA, WHICH ARE LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND PERSONAL SKILLS.

SO THEY WENT AND THEY BUILD A WALL AND THEN THEY GO TO AN INTERVIEW OR THEY GO TO A SPEECH COMPETITION.

SO WE TRIED SOMETHING NEW THIS YEAR.

WE TOOK OUR STUDENTS AND HONOR STUDENTS AND WE PUT THEM IN SKILLS USA.

GUESS WHAT? THEY CAME BACK WITH A WHOLE BUNCH OF MEDALS TOO.

SO WE HAVE GROWN 76% OF AMOUNT OF MEDALS IN THE STATE, 21 GOLD, 15 SILVER AND EIGHT BRONZE.

AND NOW WE'RE GETTING READY TO GO TO THE NATIONAL COMPETITION WHERE ALL THE GOLD MEDALISTS WILL GO.

NOW, THE GOOD NEWS IS SOME OF THE GOLD THAT WERE WON BY OTHER COLLEGES ARE NOT SHOWING UP.

SO WE'RE TAKING OUR SILVER AS WELL.

SO WE HAVE A HUGE DELEGATION GOING IN JUNE.

TO ATLANTA.

NOW. WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT SKILLS USA, IT IS YOU HAVE TO GO.

YOU ARE ALL INVITED.

OKAY, TO ATLANTA, BECAUSE IT IS A MIXTURE OF THE OLYMPICS WITH THE UNITED NATIONS AND A MULTI LEVEL MARKETING EVENT WHERE WE'RE JUMPING AND DOING A LOT OF JUMPING AND SCREAMING AND EVERYTHING.

SO YOU HAVE TO COME.

IT IS SO COOL.

AND SO WE'VE EXPANDED OUR CAREER AND TECHNICAL ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS TO OTHER SCHOOLS LIKE THE BUSINESS AND EDUCATION AND CREATIVE ARTS AND DESIGN AND LAW LAW AND PUBLIC SERVICES AND HEALTH SCIENCES.

AND WE'RE INCORPORATING EASTFIELD AND MOUNTAIN VIEW WHO HAVE NEVER PARTICIPATED IN A NEW ASSOCIATION THAT'S CALLED BPA.

AND THAT'S WHAT'S COMING FOR FOR NEXT YEAR.

SO NEXT YEAR WILL COME WITH MORE STUDENTS.

OKAY, SO WE ARE SO EXCITED AND I DON'T WANT TO TAKE MORE TIME FROM THE STUDENTS I WANT TO INTRODUCE TO YOU, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO PRESENT MY ASSOCIATE, DEAN. DR. ROBINSON'S NOT HERE.

NOEL BIGGS IS HERE.

SHE'S A SENIOR MANAGER, HANNAH ALFORD.

AND THEN WE HAVE ERIKA MACHUCA, WHO'S HOLDING THE FORT WHILE WE'RE HERE.

SO WE ARE FOUR TIME, FOUR FULL TIME EMPLOYEES, GIVING ALL OUR BEST TO SUPPORT SEVEN CAMPUSES AND SEVEN SCHOOLS OF, OF COURSE, THE ACADEMIC CHAIRS, DR.

STEVEN PAPP, SAVITA PINEAPPLEY, INTERIM CHAIR, SHEILA HYDE, THE CHAPERONS.

WE HAD TO START FINDING CHAPERONS EVERYWHERE.

WE DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH CHAPERONS.

SO SHAMIKA, DANLEY, MOORE, ROLANDA PRICE STEPPED IN.

AND OF COURSE, OUR PRESIDENT, DR.

SEABROOKS, IS REPRESENTING DALLAS COLLEGE AT THE STATE LEVEL.

AND DR. SEABROOKS HAS PUSHED AND PUSHED FOR THIS TO GROW.

AND DR. SALAKO IS IN THE BACK PUSHING, TOO.

SO THE BEAUTY OF IT IS THAT NOW UNDER THIS UMBRELLA OF SPECIAL ACADEMIC PROGRAMS, WE HAVE SKILLS USA, WE HAVE PTK.

AND GUESS WHAT?

[00:45:01]

DR. LYNN TRENCHER OF OF PTK IS TRYING TO DO THAT AT HER LEVEL BECAUSE THERE'S WIN WINS OF USING THE DATABASES AND EVERYTHING. SO WE ARE GOING TO TALK AT CATALYST.

SHE INVITED US TO TO SHARE WHAT WE'RE DOING HERE IN DALLAS COLLEGE AS PIONEERS.

SO WHO ARE OUR STUDENTS? OUR FIRST STUDENT IS JESSIE SERRANO, AND JESSIE SERRANO MOVED TO DALLAS TO ATTEND RICHLAND CAMPUS FROM PECOS, TEXAS AND IS ORIGINALLY FROM MINNESOTA.

HE IS CURRENTLY ONE YEAR INTO AN ASSOCIATE DEGREE FOR INTERACTIVE SIMULATION AND GAME DEVELOPMENT AND EARNED A GOLD MEDAL IN THE INTERACTIVE SIMULATION AND GAME DEVELOPMENT CATEGORY.

HE HAS BEEN LEARNING COMPUTER GRAPHICS AND GAME DEVELOPMENT SOFTWARE ON HIS OWN FOR OVER A DECADE TO CREATE HIS OWN PERSONAL VIDEO GAME WORLD.

HE DECIDED THE GAME WOULD HAVE A GREATER IMPACT ON OTHERS AND NEEDED TO BREAK AWAY FROM THE ISOLATION OF WHERE HE LIVED.

TO REALIZE IT, HE'S SEEKING TO COMPLEMENT HIS TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE WITH THE PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS NECESSARY TO START HIS OWN GAME DEVELOPMENT STUDIO.

AND WE WANTED TO BRING THE GAME BUT AND PUT ALL OF YOU TO PLAY.

BUT I'LL SEND THE LINK SO YOU CAN PLAY ON YOUR OWN TIME.

COME ON UP, JESSE.

THANK YOU. RIGHT HERE.

YEAH. THANK YOU.

HELLO. MY NAME IS JESSE SERRANO.

I HAVE BEEN A STUDENT AT THE DALLAS COLLEGE ON CAMPUS SINCE JUNE OF LAST YEAR.

I'M PURSUING ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE FOR INTERACTIVE SIMULATION IN GAME DEVELOPMENT, AND I'VE EARNED A GOLD MEDAL IN THE RESPECTIVE CATEGORY FOR THE SKILLS USA AND NATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND SKILLS CONFERENCE.

SO I HAD STARTED COLLEGE WITH THE SOFT SKILLS OF TEAMWORK AND LEADERSHIP AS A PRIORITY IN ANTICIPATION OF STARTING MY OWN GAME DEVELOPMENT STUDIO AFTERWARDS.

AND I HAVE WORKED IN A STATE OF CREATIVE ISOLATION FOR MOST OF MY LIFE.

SO BEING GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH A TEAM AND CREATE A VIDEO GAME HAS BEEN SOMETHING I'VE BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR A VERY LONG TIME.

AND I WANT TO EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE TO DALLAS COLLEGE FOR BEING AT THE FOREFRONT OF WHAT I CONSIDER TO BE A MAJOR MILESTONE IN MY LIFE.

TO THE BOARD. MEMBERS CHANCELLOR.

DR. JUSTIN LONDON PROVOST.

DR. SHAWNDA FLOYD, SENIOR VICE PROVOST OF ACADEMIC SERVICES AND THE SPECIAL ACADEMIC PROGRAMS TEAM.

AND TO THE FACULTY ADVISORS CHRISTOPHER KARA AND JASMINE CUEVAS FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTION AND SUPPORT IN MAKING THIS POSSIBLE.

AND I ALSO WANT TO GIVE A SPECIAL THANKS TO THE FIVE OTHER TEAM MEMBERS WHO HAVE HAD THE COURAGE AND PATIENCE TO ALLOW ME THE PRIVILEGE OF GUIDING THEM THROUGH THE STRESS AND UNCERTAINTY OF A DIGITAL WORLD THAT ONLY RECENTLY BEEN EXPOSED TO.

TO KATE DUKE FOR HER ARTISTIC ABILITY, UNWAVERING SUPPORT TO SHAINA ALBERT FOR HER STORY, WRITING AND OPTIMISM.

TO ANGEL RUIZ AND DANIELA MALDONADO FOR THEIR ASSISTANCE AND WORLDBUILDING, AND TO NATHAN HAWKINS FOR HIS CONTRIBUTION IN BLUEPRINT PROGRAMING.

AND WE ALL CONTRIBUTED SLEEPLESS NIGHTS TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN, AND WHICH IN MY CASE WAS CONTRIBUTING FIVE IN A ROW AT THE VERY END TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'D CROSS THE FINISH LINE.

IT'S NOT A STRATEGY TO BE REPEATED, BUT BUT THE STRONGEST LESSONS ARE LEARNED THROUGH TRIALS OF FIRE.

SO I LOOK FORWARD TO THE COMING YEAR WITH NEWFOUND CONFIDENCE AS WELL AS WITH THE MENTAL CLARITY OF THE CHALLENGES SKILLS USA ENTAILS SHOULD WE ENCOUNTER IT AGAIN? AND I THANK ALL OF YOU FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY OF SHARING MY EXPERIENCE WITH YOU.

AND I LOOK FORWARD TO THE OPPORTUNITY TO ASSUME THE ROLE OF A LEADER ONCE AGAIN.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH, JESSE.

THE SECOND STUDENT I'M GOING TO INTRODUCE IS VERY CLOSE TO MY HEART BECAUSE I WAS ORIGINALLY BORN IN VENEZUELA AND HE'S BRAZILIAN.

SO WE'RE NEIGHBORS IN OUR PAST LIFE.

HE STARTED HIS BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AND GLOBAL TRADE AND WORKED IN THE FAMILY BUSINESS OF A HOME IMPROVEMENT RETAIL CORPORATION, SELLING TOOLS, CONSTRUCTION PRODUCTS AND SERVICES IN HIS HOME COUNTRY, BRAZIL.

HE IS GRADUATING WITH AN ASSOCIATE DEGREE IN ARTS AT DALLAS COLLEGE AND TRANSFERRING TO PAUL QUINN TO PURSUE A BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND PLAY SOCCER ON AN ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP.

HE WANTS TO CONTINUE HIS GRANDFATHER'S LEGACY AND IMPROVE THE FAMILY BUSINESS, ENVIRONMENTAL, SOCIAL AND GOVERNANCE RATES AND EXPAND IT TO INTERNATIONAL MARKET MARKETS. HE EARNED TWO GOLD MEDALS AT SKILLS USA, CUSTOMER SERVICE AND COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT.

HE IS ALSO A DALLAS COLLEGE EMPLOYEE THAT WE WILL BE MISSING BECAUSE HE'S GOING TO GET HIS BACHELOR'S DEGREE.

SO WE'RE LOOKING FOR MORE EMPLOYEES.

STUDENTS AT SPECIAL ACADEMIC PROGRAM.

PLEASE, GIOVANNI, COME ON UP.

[00:50:08]

GOOD AFTERNOON, EVERYONE.

MY NAME IS GIOVANNI TUTTI AND I HAVE.

I AM A STUDENT FROM DALLAS COLLEGE SINCE FALL 2021.

I'M GRADUATING NEXT WEEK WITH A ASSOCIATES OF ARTS, AND I'M TRANSFERRING TO BERKELEY TO COMPLETE MY DEGREE IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND PLAY SOCCER.

GETTING AN ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP AT SKILLS USA.

I PARTICIPATED IN TWO COMPETITIONS AND I GOT TWO GOLD MEDALS FOR DALLAS COLLEGE.

OKAY. THE FIRST ONE WAS A GROUP PROJECT WITH SALLY MORRIS AND DEB TUDOR.

WE PRESENT THE LETTER TO ELDERS PROJECT, WHICH WE IMPACT SEVERAL NURSING HOME RESIDENTS IN DALLAS COUNTY WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE SENIOR SOURCE BEING PART OF THE TEAM AND COMPETING AT SKILLS USA TOGETHER WAS A FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY.

IT MADE ME STRONGER AND MORE CONFIDENT IN MY SKILLS.

THE SECOND COMPETITION WAS THE INDIVIDUAL CUSTOMER SERVICE SITUATION, WHERE I WAS FORCED OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE AND HAD TO DEAL WITH A HAPPY AND AN ANGRY CUSTOMER.

I USED ALL MY PREVIOUS JOB EXPERIENCE AND THE LESSONS FROM THE QSA FRAMEWORK TO WIN THIS COMPETITION.

I ALSO USE MY EXPERIENCE AS A STUDENT WORK IN DALLAS COLLEGE IN THE SPECIAL ACADEMIC PROGRAM DEPARTMENT.

HERE IS EASY BECAUSE OUR CUSTOMERS ARE STUDENT.

THEY ARE NORMALLY NOT TOO ANGRY.

I AM THANKFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT DR.

MARIA MELI BIGGS AND REBECCA BENAVIDEZ GAVE ME.

TWO YEARS AGO, I WAS AN ESL STUDENT AND TODAY I'M PRESENTING MY SKILLS USA UNIT TO THE DALLAS COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES. I'M SO THANKFUL TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES FOR THIS LIFE CHANGING OPPORTUNITY.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

AT THIS TIME THAT THE STUDENTS COULD COME AROUND SO WE COULD TAKE YOUR PHOTO.

OH, THE GOLD. OH, THE GOLD.

GOLD. THE GOLD.

[00:55:01]

OH, SO FINALLY, FINALLY, WE HAVE ONE MORE GROUP THAT WE WANT TO RECOGNIZE AND TALK ABOUT MORE.

[5.4. Civil Rights Tour 2023 Highlights]

SO I'VE BEEN HEARING FOR SOME TIME KEITH BAKER, FACULTY MEMBER FROM NORTH LAKES, THE IN THE BACK ROW THERE.

BEEN TELLING ME ABOUT THIS AMAZING TRIP THAT HAPPENS EVERY YEAR AND IT'S THE CIVIL RIGHTS TOUR.

AND SO WE HAD ABOUT 100 STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF FROM ALL OF OUR CAMPUSES PARTICIPATE IN THIS THREE DAY EXCURSION TO EXPLORE AND LEARN ABOUT CIVIL RIGHTS. MONUMENTS AND MUSEUMS IN ALABAMA AND MISSISSIPPI INTERACTED WITH WITH AN AUTHOR WHO'S WHO'S WRITTEN A LOT ON THIS SUBJECT.

AND SO WE WANT TO SPEND A LITTLE TIME TALKING ABOUT THEIR TRIP.

AND SO DR.

SLEJKO FROM NORTH LAKE AND BROOKHAVEN.

TELL US A LITTLE MORE. YEAH.

THANK YOU, CHANCELLOR.

MADAM CHAIR, TRUSTEES, MY ROLE HERE TODAY IS JUST TO REPRESENT AN EXPERIENCE THAT WAS A STRONG CAMPUS PROGRAM THAT WE ALL WORK TOGETHER TO SCALE TO A DALLAS COLLEGE.

EXCELLENT EXPERIENCE.

AND WE STARTED WITH SPECIAL ACADEMIC PROGRAMS. AND THEN WE BROUGHT IN DR.

STEPHANIE HILL FROM STUDENT SUCCESS.

AND THEN WE HAD HELP FROM THE BUDGET OFFICE AND TYPEKIT THOMAS TO MAKE THIS A BIGGER AND BETTER AND MORE EXCLUSIVE EXPERIENCE.

SO AT THIS TIME, I'M GOING TO BRING UP OUR FACULTY CHAMPION, DR.

ROY VU AND MISS SHANNON MOORE.

AND THEY WERE THE LEADERS OF THE TRIP, AND THEY'LL TELL YOU ABOUT IT.

THANK YOU, CHANCELLOR, AND THANK YOU, DALLAS COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES FOR INVITING US TO BE HERE.

IT IS DEFINITELY A PRIVILEGE AND AN HONOR TO BE HERE.

SPECIAL THANKS TO DR.

MORRIS AND DR. SLEJKO FOR THEIR STEADFAST SUPPORT AND LEADERSHIP, AS WELL AS DR.

FLOYD FOR SUPPORTING OUR TRIP EVER SINCE 2018.

I ALSO WANT TO THANK OUR FACULTY AND STAFF ADVISORS.

SO MORE HERE, SO MANY.

DR. DARRELL HOWARD, REAL QUICKLY AND PROFESSOR STUART ALEXANDER.

THERE YOU GO. THANK YOU, MR. PERRY. MISS MAGGIE LOPEZ.

ALL RIGHT. AWESOME. AND ALSO MR. DARWIN. ARCHIE PETTIS.

DR. SHERRY BOWIE.

NOW HERE. OKAY. AND MR. SO THEY DID A FANTASTIC JOB OF LEADING AND GUIDING OUR STUDENTS.

AND SO MY DEEPEST GRATITUDE TO THEM.

THEY PROVIDED A SAFE SPACE FOR OUR STUDENTS TO SHARE THEIR VOICES AND SHARE THEIR WORDS.

I ALSO WANT TO RESERVE MY DEEPEST GRATITUDE TO MY PARTNER IN CRIME.

RIGHT BEHIND ME, MISS SHANNON MOORE, FELLOW CO-ORGANIZER OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS TRIP.

AGAIN, OUR FACULTY AND STAFF ADVISORS DID A WONDERFUL JOB OF LEADING THEIR STUDENT GROUP DISCUSSIONS AND FACILITATING CONVERSATIONS AND AGAIN PROVIDING A SAFE SPACE FOR THEM TO EXPRESS THEIR THOUGHTS AND SHARE THEIR WORDS.

AND FINALLY, MY DEEPEST, DEEPEST GRATITUDE TO OUR STUDENTS, BECAUSE THEY LEND THEIR VOICES.

THEY HAD THE COURAGE AND THE RESILIENCE TO LEND THEIR VOICES AND SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS.

WITHOUT THEM, A CIVIL RIGHTS TRIP WOULD NOT EXIST.

SIMPLE AS THAT.

THEIR VOICES TRULY MATTER WITH THEIR DREAMS REALIZED AND NOT DEFERRED.

JUST TO BORROW FROM LANGSTON HUGHES.

SO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE.

UM, ALSO, OUR TRIP PLAYS AN INTEGRAL ROLE OF FURTHERING OUR ACADEMIC STUDIES.

IN ADVANCE OF THE TRIP, WE HOSTED AN ANNUAL CIVIL RIGHTS SPEAKER SERIES WHERE WE SHARE PRESENTATIONS ON US CIVIL RIGHTS, HISTORY AND TOPICS.

WE ALSO HAVE GUEST SPEAKERS AND ORIENTATION SESSIONS AS WELL.

ADDITIONALLY, OUR SITES TO AFFILIATED COURSES INCLUDE WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS PERTAINING TO OUR TRIP AND OUR 20 2223 SURVIVED TRIP INCLUDED STUDENTS, EMPLOYEES FROM ALL SEVEN DALLAS COLLEGE CAMPUSES AND FOUR OF OUR SCHOOLS.

SO THAT'S THE FIRST TIME THAT WE HAD STUDENT PARTICIPANTS FROM ALL SEVEN CAMPUSES.

FOLLOWING OUR SUPERVISED TRIP HAS BEEN A TRANSFORMATIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE THROUGH EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING.

OUR STUDENTS TRACE THE FOOTSTEPS OF JOHN LEWIS IN ANY PRO-SLAVERY AND OUR CIVIL RIGHTS FOOT SOLDIERS IN SELMA.

THEY REFLECT WHERE FOUR YOUNG BLACK GIRLS WERE MURDERED IN BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA, AND THEY SET AND REFLECT IN THE CHURCH PEWS WHERE DR.

KING GAVE SERMONS IN MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

AND NOW I'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE MISS SHANNON.

GREETINGS. SO I'LL GO QUICKLY BECAUSE I KNOW THE BEST IS YET TO COME.

OUR STUDENT SPEAKERS.

BUT FIRST, I JUST WANT TO THANK YOU ALL BECAUSE THE DECISIONS THAT YOU ALL MAKE REALLY PROVIDE THESE OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS.

AND SO I'M GLAD THAT YOU ALL ARE REALLY ABLE TO SEE THE FRUIT OF YOUR LABOR.

NOW, BEFORE I BEGIN CALLING UP THE STUDENTS, I DO WANT TO BRIEFLY MENTION THE CONTRIBUTIONS FROM SOME OF

[01:00:01]

OUR UNSUNG HEROES, WHICH IS TISKA THOMAS AND HER TEAM AS WE WERE TRANSITIONING THROUGH WORKDAY.

HER TEAM WAS AMAZING AND REALLY HELPED US GET THIS ALL, GET THE BALL ROLLING.

AND SO I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT.

AND ALSO OUR EXECUTIVE ASSISTANTS LIKE JANELLA BARCELO AND ALSO DELRAY.

THEY ARE AMAZING.

AND I KNOW YOU SEE OUR FACES UP HERE, BUT THEY ARE THE PEOPLE IN THE BACKGROUND THAT ARE REALLY PUTTING IN THE WORK.

AND YOU ALL SEE THESE COOL T SHIRTS WE HAVE.

WELL, WE ARE.

WE BROUGHT A T SHIRT FOR EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU ALL SO YOU ALL CAN HAVE A SHIRT.

SO WE WANT TO GIVE THAT TO YOU.

ABSOLUTELY. AND SO NOW I WANT TO INTRODUCE OUR STUDENT SPEAKERS HERE AND I WILL, YOU KNOW, WARN YOU, PLEASE HOLD ON TO YOUR SEATS BECAUSE THEY ARE VERY PASSIONATE. THIS WAS A A TREMENDOUS EXPERIENCE, A TREMENDOUSLY IMPACTFUL EXPERIENCE.

AND THEY HAVE POWERFUL, POWERFUL WORDS THAT THEY WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU ALL.

AND SO, WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, I WANT TO FIRST INTRODUCE NATHAN, FOLLOWED BY FOLLOWED BY XAVIER, AND THEN JADEN WILL WRAP IT UP.

SO THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

DALLAS COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCE ABOUT THE 2023 CIVIL RIGHTS TRIP.

MY NAME IS NATHAN STEINMETZ AND I'M A RETURNING COLLEGE STUDENT IN MY SECOND SEMESTER AT DALLAS COLLEGE NORTH LAKE.

I WANT TO TAKE THE TIME TO THANK SOME OF THE FACULTY AS WELL, ESPECIALLY DR.

VU MRS MOORE AND THE SPEAKERS ON THE CIVIL RIGHTS SPEAKER SERIES BEFOREHAND, DR.

HOWARD AND DR. BRADEN.

THIS WAS EASILY ONE OF THE MOST IMPACTFUL EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE, AND EVERY STUDENT THAT I'VE SPOKEN TO ON THE TRIP AND SINCE HAS SHARED THAT SAME SENTIMENT. WE TOURED SIGNIFICANT SITES AND MUSEUMS ACROSS JACKSON, BIRMINGHAM, MONTGOMERY AND SELMA.

WE SAW THE MISSISSIPPI CIVIL RIGHTS MUSEUM AND THE LEGACY MUSEUM IN MONTGOMERY, WHICH IS THE MOST POWERFUL MUSEUM I'VE EVER BEEN TO.

BUT PERHAPS MOST SIGNIFICANTLY, WE WENT TO THE SITES OF MANY HISTORICAL EVENTS.

WE VISITED THE 16TH STREET CHURCH, THE SITE OF WHAT MARTIN LUTHER KING CALLED ONE OF THE MOST VICIOUS AND TRAGIC CRIMES EVER PERPETRATED AGAINST HUMANITY.

WE STOOD IN THE ROOM WHERE THEY PLANNED THE MONTGOMERY BUS BOYCOTT, AND TOGETHER WE WALKED THE EDMUND PETTUS BRIDGE, SITE OF THE BRUTAL BLACK BLOODY SUNDAY CRACKDOWN AND THE DEFIANT MARCH THAT STUDENTS MADE TWO DAYS LATER.

THE SENSE OF PLACE THAT WASHED OVER US ON THIS TRIP IS PRETTY HARD TO EXPLAIN.

THE ONE DRAWBACK TO THE TOUR WAS THAT THE CITIES JUST HAD SO MUCH HISTORY THAT OCCASIONALLY WE HAD TO RUSH.

AND AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, A HISTORY MAJOR LIKES TO WALK A LITTLE SLOWLY IN A MUSEUM.

THE GUIDED DISCUSSIONS THAT WE HAD EACH NIGHT WERE QUITE SIMPLY WHAT I'D ALWAYS IMAGINED COLLEGE COULD BE LIKE.

COMPLEX TOPICS TALKED ABOUT THOUGHTFULLY AND PRODUCTIVELY, WHICH IS DIFFICULT, ESPECIALLY WITH SOME OF THE MATERIAL WE WERE TALKING ABOUT.

BUT SEEING MY FELLOW STUDENTS ENGAGE AND CONNECT WITH HISTORY AND MORE SPECIFICALLY, SEEING THEIR IDEAS CHALLENGED AND CONFIRMED BY HISTORY IN REAL TIME REALLY CEMENTED THE POWER OF HISTORY AND MADE ME FEEL VERY CONFIDENT IN MY FUTURE TEACHING HISTORY, MOST LIKELY AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

AND IT MAY NOT SURPRISE YOU THEN, THAT I BELIEVE THAT LEARNING FROM THE PAST IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO TO DEEPEN YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD AROUND YOU. THAT IT'S ONE THING TO READ ABOUT THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT AND SOMETHING ELSE TO STAND ON THE SAME GROUND FOR ORDINARY PEOPLE LIKE YOU CHANGED THE WORLD.

AND IT'S SOMETHING ELSE ENTIRELY TO MEET THOSE PEOPLE AND HEAR THEIR EXPERIENCES FOR YOURSELF.

AS DR. VU ALLUDED TO, WE MET JERRY MITCHELL, WHOSE INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING BROUGHT KLANSMEN TO JUSTICE, INCLUDING THE KILLERS OF MEDGAR EVERS.

WE HEARD FIRSTHAND STORIES FROM PEOPLE WHO KNEW DR.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JUNIOR PERSONALLY, AND WE SPOKE WITH UNSUNG CIVIL RIGHTS LEADERS LIKE ANNIE PEARL AVERY, WHO WAS IN SELMA ON BLOODY SUNDAY.

AND THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO HISTORY REMIND US THAT ORDINARY PEOPLE CAN AND DO CHANGE THE WORLD.

IN FACT, THEY'RE THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT DO.

THERE IS POWER IN THE SENSE OF PLACE, BUT THERE IS EVEN MORE POWER IN THE LIVED EXPERIENCE.

LAST WEEK, THE WOMAN WHO FALSELY ACCUSED EMMETT TILL, CAROLYN BRYANT, DIED AT 88 YEARS OLD.

EMMETT WOULD HAVE BEEN 81 THIS YEAR WHEN WE STOOD IN FRONT OF THE DOORS TO THE BRYANT STORE WHERE THAT TRAGEDY BEGAN.

THE FLAKING PAINT AND RUSTING FIXTURES MIGHT TRICK YOU INTO THINKING THAT THAT HAPPENED A VERY LONG TIME AGO.

HOWEVER, THIS TRIP AND BRYANT'S PASSING REALLY CLARIFY FOR ME JUST HOW RECENT THIS HISTORY IS.

SOON, TIME WILL REDUCE ALL OF THESE LIVED EXPERIENCES TO STORIES, AND I WANT TO THANK DALLAS COLLEGE FOR GIVING YOUNG PEOPLE THE OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR THOSE STORIES BEFORE THEY CAN'T. THANK YOU.

SWAGIT. HI.

[01:05:06]

I JUST WANT YOU GUYS TO KNOW YOU GUYS LOOK VERY NICE TODAY.

I LOVE ALL THE OUTFITS, BUT GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE.

MY NAME IS HALIL HICKS, AND I ATTEND DALLAS MOUNTAIN VIEW COLLEGE CAMPUS.

I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE A SPECIAL THANKS TO THE CIVIL RIGHTS TOUR TEAM, FACULTY AND STAFF FOR COLLABORATING WITH THE SPONSORS TO GRANT THIS OPPORTUNITY TO STUDENTS ATTENDING DALLAS COLLEGE. THIS EXPERIENCE HAS ALLOWED ME NOT ONLY TO READ ABOUT UNITED STATES HISTORY, BUT TO FEEL IT AS WELL.

THIS WAS AN EXPERIENCE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY THAT MADE A PROFOUND IMPACT ON ME AND SEVERAL DALLAS COLLEGE STUDENTS.

THIS TOUR HELPED CONNECT THE CLASSROOM LEARNING ENVIRONMENT TO IDENTIFIABLE REAL TIME, REAL WORLD PROBLEMS. THIS TOUR ALSO HELPED SHED LIGHT ON TRUE ISSUES OF AMERICA AND ITS FIGHT TOWARDS EQUAL OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL AMERICAN PEOPLE, DESPITE THEIR RACE, COLOR, RELIGION AND SEX.

THE REAL FIGHT IS AGAINST THE WHITE SUPREMACIST IDEOLOGIES, RACIAL INJUSTICE, AND SYSTEMATIC OPPRESSION.

IN PARTICULAR, THE MISSISSIPPI CIVIL RIGHTS MUSEUM, THE ALABAMA LEGACY MUSEUM, AND THE ALABAMA NATIONAL MEMORIAL FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE REPRESENTED THE CURRENT ISSUES IN A DIGESTIBLE, CONNECTABLE, RELATABLE MANNER TO ME AND OTHER PEOPLE.

I WAS STRONGLY MOVED MENTALLY, SPIRITUALLY AND EMOTIONALLY BY ATTENDING THESE IMPACTFUL AND STABLE ESTABLISHMENTS.

I EXPERIENCED FEELINGS OF PEACE, JOY, SADNESS AND HOPE ALL AT THE SAME TIME.

THE FEELING OF SADNESS DUE TO THE RAW TRUTH OF WHAT HAPPENED TO MY ANCESTORS DISPLAYED CLEAR AS DAY NOT ONLY IN MY FACE, BUT IN THE FACE OF MANY OTHERS, IN DENIAL ABOUT THE TRUTH.

A FEELING OF HOPE AND PEACE, KNOWING THERE IS ALWAYS A PERSON FIGHTING FOR EQUAL OPPORTUNITY AND RIGHTS, NOT ONLY FOR BLACK AMERICANS BUT FOR EVERYONE.

LASTLY, THE FEELING OF JOY, REALIZING THAT I AM STANDING HERE TODAY AND ABLE TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCE WITH YOU ALL BECAUSE MY ANCESTORS PERSEVERED THROUGH ALL THE OPPRESSION, MASS GENOCIDES, LYNCHINGS AND RUTHLESS MURDERS AND EXECUTIONS.

I FOUND JOY IN KNOWING NO MATTER THE FIGHT MY PEOPLE FACE.

WE ARE RESILIENT, DETERMINED AND MOTIVATED TO FIGHT BACK STRONGER EACH AND EVERY DAY.

JUST LIKE ANNE PEARL, WHO FOUGHT FOR VOTERS RIGHTS ALL ACROSS THE SOUTH.

IT WAS A PLEASURE MEETING HER, BY THE WAY, AT THE NATIONAL VOTING RIGHTS MUSEUM IN ALABAMA.

I FEEL DALLAS COMMUNITY COLLEGE MISSION STATEMENT WAS FULFILLED OVER THE THREE DAY EXPERIENCE WITH THE CIVIL RIGHTS TOUR.

THIS MISSION TO THE MISSION TO TRANSFORM LIVES AND COMMUNITIES THROUGH HIGHER EDUCATION MOST DEFINITELY.

MOST DEFINITELY TOOK PLACE DURING THIS TIME.

THE TOUR OPENED UP STUDENTS EYES BY SEEING THE REAL TRUTH IN PROBLEMS, AND IT OPENED UP STUDENTS MINDS BY INFORMING THEM THAT HIGHER EDUCATION IS ONE OF THE WAYS OF POSITIVE IMPACT AND CHANGE CAN HELP FIGHT FOR EQUALITY FOR ALL.

THE TRIP HAS IMPACTED ME FURTHER BY INSTILLING THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION.

THE THE EDUCATION I RECEIVED WILL POSITION ME TO SERVE MANY PEOPLE OF MANY DIFFERENT ETHNIC BACKGROUNDS AND COMMUNITIES IN DIFFERENT WALKS OF LIFE.

MY GOAL IS TO EMPOWER AND ENCOURAGE MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE TO TO CHASE THEIR DREAMS AND OBTAIN THE IMPOSSIBLE THROUGH EDUCATION AND KNOWLEDGE.

AND BEING A PART OF DALLAS COMMUNITY COLLEGE FAMILY THAT HAS PLACED ME IN A POSITION TO DO JUST THAT.

EACH DAY I ENCOUNTER A STUDENT, I ENCOURAGE THEM TO DO THEIR BEST IN CLASS IN OBTAINING A DEGREE.

THEY ARE WORKING TOWARDS.

EVERYONE PLAYS A PART IN THE FIGHT FOR EQUALITY FOR ALL.

EVERY TINY PART OF EACH PERSON'S CONTRIBUTION WILL ULTIMATELY ADD UP TO A HUGE PART TO FIGHT THE FIGHT AGAINST INJUSTICE IN AMERICA TODAY, NO MATTER YOUR AGE, SEX OR RACE, EVERYONE PLAYS A ROLE IN CREATING A BETTER AMERICA FOR THEMSELVES AND THE FUTURE GENERATIONS TO COME.

IT IS MENTIONED THAT WHEN WE LOVE, WE REFLECT THE IMAGE OF OUR CREATOR AND FULFILL THE PURPOSE OF OUR EXISTENCE.

I FEEL MY PURPOSE HERE IN THIS WORLD IS TO FIGHT FOR EQUALITY, FOR THE VOICELESS, SPREAD LOVE TO THE LOVELESS AND BRING PEACE TO THE RESTLESS.

WITH EVERYONE DOING THEIR PART, THE UNVEILING OF THE TRUTH WILL START THE PROMOTION OF HEALING FROM THE PAST, WHICH WILL RESULT IN A BETTER AMERICA IN THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE.

INDIVIDUALS SUCH AS.

MYSELF AND YOU GUYS HAVE REALLY OPENED UP THE MINDS OF YOUNGER ADULTS TO MAKE A POSITIVE CHANGE AND IMPACT IN THE WORLD.

I PRAY YOU ARE MOVED TO KEEP THIS AMAZING HANDS ON LEARNING EXPERIENCE AVAILABLE TO MANY OTHER DALLAS COMMUNITY COLLEGES, CAMPUSES AND STUDENTS.

I PRAY THAT IT EVEN EXPANDS TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THE EARLY COLLEGE PROGRAMS AT DALLAS COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND POSSIBLY EVEN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT A PART OF THAT

[01:10:05]

PROGRAM. I PRAY IN YEARS TO COME.

THIS PROGRAM EXPANDS TO EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT HISTORY IN AMERICA THAT MANY PEOPLE DO NOT WANT TO BE TOLD.

THIS CAN BE MADE POSSIBLE BY INCREASED FUNDING TO THIS PROGRAM TO SPREAD THE TRUTH, AWARENESS AND EDUCATION TO ALL STUDENTS IN DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES.

ON BEHALF OF ALL THE STUDENT ATTENDEES, WE GREATLY AND PROUDLY THANK YOU AND APPRECIATE ALL YOUR HARD WORK AND EFFORT PUT INTO THIS TRIP TO MAKE IT STRESS FREE AND SMOOTH OPERATING. THANK YOU.

HELLO, EVERYBODY.

FIRST, I'D LIKE TO GIVE THANKS AND HONOR TO MY LORD AND SAVIOR GOD.

AND I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU GUYS FOR JUST BEING HERE TODAY AND EVERYBODY THAT'S IN THIS ROOM AS WE SPEAK.

SO I HAD THE PLEASURE OF GOING ON THE CIVIL RIGHTS TOUR LAST YEAR, AND IT WAS AMAZING.

BUT THIS TIME I BELIEVE THAT I WAS CHOSEN TO GO ON THIS TRIP SO I CAN BE A SUPPORT FOR THE STUDENTS THAT ARE HERE TODAY.

UM, DURING THIS JOURNEY, IT WAS JUST LONG AT FIRST, BUT WE GOT THROUGH IT AND LIKE THEY SAID, WE RUSHED THROUGH A LOT OF THE THINGS THAT A LOT OF THE MUSEUMS AND EVERYTHING.

BUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LAST YEAR AND THIS YEAR WAS THE DIFFERENT SPEAKERS, THE WAY THEY ORGANIZED IT, AND I FEEL LIKE IT WAS BETTER THAN BEFORE.

UM, THERE WAS A LOT OF EMOTIONS EVERYWHERE FROM FACULTY MEMBERS, STAFF MEMBERS AND TO THE STUDENTS AND JUST BEING ABLE TO GO AGAIN AND SEE THOSE PEOPLE THAT WERE THERE.

THE ADVOCATES AND JUST SEEING EVERYTHING THAT THEY WENT THROUGH AND EDUCATING US AS A WHOLE.

IT WAS JUST AN AWESOME EXPERIENCE.

SO I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU GUYS.

AND I FEEL THAT, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE TO KEEP ON FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT, YOU KNOW, BECAUSE CHANGE WON'T JUST COME OVER OVERNIGHT.

YOU HAVE TO KEEP FIGHTING.

AND I FEEL LIKE WE CONTINUE TO FIGHT THIS FIGHT OF INJUSTICE, BUT IT STARTS WITH JUST US.

LIKE IT WASN'T JUST OUR ANCESTORS.

IT WAS OTHER PEOPLE'S ANCESTORS FROM DIFFERENT RACES, BACKGROUNDS AND JUST EVERYWHERE.

EVERYONE WAS FIGHTING, BUT IT WAS ONLY TOLD THAT WE WERE JUST FIGHTING AGAINST EACH OTHER.

BUT, UM, I WOULD LIKE TO SAY IT WAS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY AND I WISH THAT WE CAN CONTINUE THIS ON.

AND I WAS HAPPY TO SEE PEOPLE THAT I SAW THE YEAR BEFORE AND I WAS ACTUALLY PUT INTO THE SELMA TIMES NEWSPAPER.

SO IT WAS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY.

LIKE, THANK YOU GUYS.

JUST THANK EVERYONE THAT'S HERE TODAY.

THANK YOU.

HELLO, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.

MY NAME IS JADEN.

I AM FROM NORTH LAKE COLLEGE IS MY FIRST SEMESTER, ACTUALLY, SO I'M GONNA BE PERFECTLY FRANK WITH YOU.

WHEN I FIRST WENT ON THIS TRIP, IT WAS $100.

IT LOOKED LIKE A NICE VACATION.

SO I TOOK MY VACATION.

I WENT ON THIS TRIP. BUT AS UNEXPECTED AS THIS MIGHT SOUND, THE TRIP PROVED TO BE ITS OWN TRIGGER FOR ME.

SO ONCE UPON A TIME BACK IN HIGH SCHOOL, I WAS IN THE MARCHING BAND.

AND IF ANY OF YOU ALL HAVE CHILDREN IN THE MARCHING BAND OR HAVE BEEN IN YOURSELF IN MODERN AGES, IT GETS PRETTY EXPENSIVE TO JUST TO PARTICIPATE.

YOU HAVE TO AFFORD THE COMPETITIONS.

YOU HAVE TO AFFORD TO KEEP THE BAND GOING.

YOU HAVE TO AFFORD PROPS.

THAT WAS A TOTAL OF PROBABLY ABOUT $1,200 THAT I HAD TO PAY.

AND THEN I HAD PEOPLE, INDIAN PEOPLE WHO CAME AND I MEAN, LIKE FROM INDIA WHO CAME UP TO ME AND ASKED IF THEY COULD HAVE MY WHITE PRIVILEGE.

NO, I'M NOT SURE HOW THAT WOULD HAVE MADE ONE OF Y'ALL FEEL, BUT THAT SURE DIDN'T FEEL GREAT.

I CURRENTLY PAY FOR MY COLLEGE.

I WORK BLUE COLLAR.

I CURRENTLY WORK ON CARS.

I WORK AT JUST TIRES.

I CAME FROM THERE.

I DON'T THINK THESE KIDS EVER HAD TO WORK.

I DON'T THINK THEY EVER HAD TO PAY FOR THEIR OWN CAR.

I DON'T THINK THEY HAD TO PAY FOR THEIR OWN INSURANCE OR THEIR TUITION.

MOST OF THEM WERE GIVEN AUDI'S MERCEDES TESLAS.

CARS THEY LIKE TO DRIVE AROUND AS THEY PLEASED.

NO, THIS IS NOT SOME GRAND OLD.

WORLD'S TINIEST VIOLIN COMPETITION HERE.

I DON'T CARE. THIS IS NOT A SOB STORY THAT I CARE TO EMPHASIZE, BUT THIS IS TO PROVE THE POINT THAT THIS TRIP WAS A TRIGGER FOR ME.

AND REMINDED ME OF THIS QUESTION THAT I HAD BEEN RINGING IN MY HEAD INCESSANTLY SINCE THAT ENCOUNTER THAT I HAD.

[01:15:06]

WHAT THE HELL IS WHITE PRIVILEGE? BECAUSE I KNOW IT SURE ISN'T MONEY.

BECAUSE IF I HAVE WHITE PRIVILEGE, I DON'T HAVE MONEY.

THIS TRIP IN AND OF ITSELF HELPED EXPLAIN THAT A LITTLE BIT.

GIVE ME A LITTLE BIT OF CLARITY.

IT HELPED ME UNDERSTAND THAT WHILE THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN VERY WOUNDING TO ME, THAT MIGHT HAVE WOUNDED MY PRIDE, MAYBE.

THAT CERTAINLY WAS JUST ONE CUT ON MY SKIN.

FOR MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE FACED RACISM, BLACKS, LATINOS, ASIANS, WHATEVER THEY MIGHT BE, THAT MIGHT VERY WELL HAVE BEEN THE 1,000TH CUT ON THEIR SKIN.

IT WAS VERY ENLIGHTENING GOING ON THAT TRIP.

BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, IT HELPED ME KIND OF REACH THE REVELATION THAT IT'S NOT ABOUT RACE.

IT'S NOT ABOUT SEX.

IT'S NOT ABOUT SEXUALITY.

IT'S ABOUT CLASS.

WHY ARE WE FIGHTING OVER WHO HAS THE MOST MORAL SUPERIORITY BASED OFF OF RACE, SEXUALITY, GENDER? WHENEVER THERE ARE PEOPLE, MANY PEOPLE LIKE ME MAKING UNDER 30 K A YEAR DOING WHAT I'M DOING.

WHO ARE BLACK, WHITE, MALE.

FEMALE. WHY ARE WE FIGHTING? WE'RE ALL THE SAME.

AND IN MANY WAYS I HAVE.

I WOULD ARGUE MAYBE THIS MIGHT BE A LITTLE CONTROVERSIAL.

PEOPLE WHO DON'T WORK HAVE LESS MORAL SUPERIORITY THAN ME, BUT I DON'T CARE ABOUT THAT.

IT'S NOT ABOUT WHO'S RIGHT AND WHO'S WRONG.

IT'S ABOUT US ALL COMING TOGETHER AND REALIZING THAT THE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO DIVIDE US, OUR LEADERS, OUR BUSINESSMEN, OUR CEOS OF THE WORLD, THEY PROFIT WHENEVER WE FIGHT.

DO YOU WANT TO FIGHT? OVER SOMETHING AS FEEBLE AS RACE.

DO YOU WANT TO FIGHT OVER SOMETHING AS FEEBLE AS SEXUALITY? OR WOULD YOU RATHER COME TOGETHER? LOOK, YOUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN THEIR EYES, THEIR BLACK BROTHERS, WHITE BROTHERS, ASIAN BROTHERS, WHATEVER THEY MIGHT BE.

AND POINT AT THEM AND SAY, I KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN THROUGH.

SHOW THEM YOUR HANDS.

I KNOW WHAT WORK IS.

I THINK THAT'S A FAR MORE PRODUCTIVE.

AND I THINK WHAT WE NEED TO DO AS CITIZENS AND ENCOURAGE EACH OTHER NOT ONLY TO THINK ABOUT WHAT WHITE PRIVILEGE IS, BUT TO THINK ABOUT WHAT ALL OF OUR PRIVILEGE IS BECAUSE WE ARE ALL PRIVILEGED IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.

I OBVIOUSLY I HAVE WHITE PRIVILEGE.

I'M WHITE. I DON'T HAVE MONEY.

THOSE INDIAN KIDS WHO WENT CRITICIZED ME, HAD ALL THE MONEY.

THEY DON'T HAVE WHITE PRIVILEGE.

WE ALL HAVE PRIVILEGE.

WE ALL WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT DISPARITIES IN WEALTH.

SO WHY SHOULD WE WHY SHOULD WE BE CRITICIZING OURSELVES EACH OTHER OVER THE MONEY THAT WE DO OR DON'T HAVE? IT'S MIND BOGGLING. THANK YOU.

ONE THING THAT AND THANK YOU TO OUR STUDENT SPEAKERS.

BUT ONE THING THAT I FAILED TO MENTION IS THAT WHEN WE INITIALLY OPENED UP REGISTRATION FOR THE CIVIL RIGHTS TOUR, WE HAD TO WE HAD TWO PHASES THAT WE WANTED TO OPEN REGISTRATION FOR, FIRST PHASE FOR OUR STUDENTS THAT WERE CONNECTED TO THE COURSES THAT ACTUALLY TAUGHT THE CIVIL RIGHTS TOUR AND CONNECTED SOME OF THE SPEAKERS IN OUR SPECIALIZED PROGRAMS. WE DIDN'T MAKE IT ONE WEEK WITHOUT US HAVING 170 STUDENTS ON OUR WAITING LIST.

OKAY. SO THAT MEANS ALTHOUGH WE HAD PLANNED TO PROMOTE THIS PROGRAM FOR FOUR WEEKS.

IT. WE WERE WE CAPPED IT, WE HAD TO CAP IT.

AND WE WERE FULL WITHIN THE FIRST WEEK OF SHARING THAT.

SO I JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT I MADE MENTION OF THAT, THAT THIS IS WHAT OUR STUDENTS WANT.

WHEN WE HAVE NUMBERS SHOW UP LIKE THAT, IT MEANS THAT THIS IS WHAT THEY'RE HUNGERING FOR.

THIS IS THE TYPE OF PROGRAM THAT THEY WANT.

SO AGAIN, THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR HAVING US AND ALLOWING US TO PRESENT TO YOU OUR EXPERIENCES.

THANK YOU ALL FOR FOR SHARING YOUR PERSPECTIVE AND PARTICIPATING IN THE TRIP.

AND AGAIN, THANKS TO THE FACULTY AND ADVISORS AND ORGANIZERS WHO PUT IT TOGETHER.

SO COME ON UP.

LET'S GET A PHOTO.

[01:22:23]

WELL, THAT WAS THOSE WERE SOME GREAT PRESENTATIONS.

WE WILL CONTINUE WITH ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE CHANCELLOR.

[6. Chancellor and Board Announcements]

SO I'LL KEEP MY REMARKS TO AN HOUR OR SO.

APPRECIATE EVERYONE'S SUPPORT AND PATIENCE.

IT'S BEEN A LONG DAY. APPRECIATE THE BOARD AND THE TEAM WITH ALL THE PRESENTATIONS THAT THEY DID.

AND AGAIN, TO BE ABLE TO HEAR WHAT WE JUST HEARD, I THINK IS SO REPRESENTATIVE OF DALLAS COLLEGE, YOU HEARD FROM STUDENTS AND FACULTY AND OTHERS THAT WHERE YOU SAW THE CROSS SECTION OF WHAT WE DO AS AN INSTITUTION EVERY DAY FROM THE ARTS, FROM THE TRADES, FROM ACADEMIC TRANSFER PROGRAMS YOU HEARD MENTIONED AND THANKS OF FACULTY AND WHAT OUR INDIVIDUAL FACULTY MEMBERS DO EVERY DAY AND OUR FACULTY ADVISORS, OUR OUR SUPPORT TEAMS AND WHAT THEY DO.

AND AGAIN, I JUST THINK IT'S REALLY REPRESENTATIVE OF EVERYTHING WE DO HERE.

SO THANK YOU FOR FOR YOUR PATIENCE AS WE ENGAGED IN ALL OF THAT.

AND THEN I'LL JUST QUICKLY MENTION A COUPLE OF THINGS.

ONE IS, AS WE CONTINUE TO ENDEAVOR TO TELL THE DALLAS COLLEGE STORY, WE'VE GOT NEW MARKETING AND TV ADS, BROADCAST ADS THAT YOU WILL BEGIN TO SEE IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN ALREADY.

CERTAINLY THE BOARD WILL SHARE THE LINK TO THOSE, SO YOU CAN TAKE A LOOK.

BUT CERTAINLY PROUD OF DOROTHY AND THE MARKETING TEAM AND BRAD AND OTHERS THAT HELPED PUT THIS CAMPAIGN TOGETHER TO TELL OUR STORY.

AND THEN, YOU KNOW, OUR STORY CULMINATES NEXT WEEK WITH GRADUATION.

AND SO I KNOW WE'RE WE'RE ALL EXCITED TO GET TO SEE ALL OF THESE STUDENTS AND THOUSANDS OF OTHERS CROSS THE STAGE.

A LOT OF WORK AND EFFORT GOING INTO PUTTING THIS TOGETHER.

AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, A PRODUCTION OF THIS MAGNITUDE WITH MULTIPLE CEREMONIES.

AND SO I APPRECIATE MOLLY BEWLEY AND MANY OF THE TEAM THAT THAT ARE PUTTING THAT TOGETHER.

AND I KNOW IT'LL BE AN OUTSTANDING SET OF CEREMONIES.

AND THEN ALSO JUST WANT TO SAY WE'VE GOT OVER 500 VOLUNTEERS THAT HAVE SIGNED EXCUSE ME, HAVE SIGNED UP TO SUPPORT THIS.

AS YOU HEARD DR. WILLIAMS SAY EARLIER TODAY, WE COULD USE SOME MORE FOR SATURDAY EVENING.

SO THERE'S NO BETTER WAY TO SPEND YOUR SATURDAY EVENING FOR THOSE OF YOU LISTENING OUT THERE THAN VOLUNTEERING TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS.

SO I ENCOURAGE YOU TO TO ENROLL AND DO THAT.

SO WITH THAT, MADAM CHAIR, THAT CONCLUDES MY REMARKS.

THANK YOU. DO ANY TRUSTEES HAVE ANY REMARKS? YES. TRUSTEE YES.

REMARKS. I WAS UNABLE TO MAKE THEM EARLIER, BUT JUST WANTED TO BECAUSE WE HAD A LOT OF GOOD INFORMATION BUT DIDN'T HAVE AS MUCH TIME FOR

[01:25:05]

FEEDBACK BECAUSE THERE WAS SO MUCH TO DO AND A TIME TO TO MEET ANYWAY.

SO WORKFORCE SCHOLARS, EXCELLENT PROGRAM.

JUST REALLY APPRECIATE THE INNOVATION AND HOW WE'RE REALLY WORKING TO TRANSFORM LIVES IN A REAL IMPACTFUL, A REAL WORLD WAY.

SO THANK YOU FOR EVERYONE WHO'S WORKING AT THAT AND HOPEFULLY IT BECOMES A MODEL AND WE CAN GET MORE GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATIONS LIKE CITY OF DALLAS, DALLAS COUNTY, ETCETERA, TO JOIN US IN THAT EFFORT.

THE VALUE STATEMENT, GREAT WORK DONE.

SO GOOD THAT WE PUT THE MONKEY ON EMPLOYEES BACK, SO TO SPEAK.

WE INVITED ALL TO THE TABLE AND IF THEY DIDN'T COME, THAT WAS THEIR DECISION.

BUT THEY CAN'T SAY THAT THEY WERE SHUT OUT OR NOBODY ASKED THEM, ETCETERA, ETCETERA.

BUT GREAT WORK AND I REALLY HOPE EVERYONE INTERNALIZES THE VALUE STATEMENT AND WHAT IT SAYS AND WE CAN REALLY BUILD TRUST AND EMPLOYEES FEEL COMFORTABLE BRINGING THEM, BRINGING ABOUT THEIR THEIR OPINIONS OR CONSTRUCTIVE VIEWS OF HOW MAYBE WE CAN IMPROVE THINGS.

I KNOW WHEN I WAS AN EMPLOYEE I USED THE VALUE STATEMENT ALL THE TIME TO PUSH THE ENVELOPE AND I COULDN'T REALLY GET CRITICIZED OR RETALIATED AGAINST BECAUSE I WAS USING THE INSTITUTION'S STATEMENTS TO BE ABLE TO MAKE MY CASE.

AND HOPEFULLY EMPLOYEES WILL DO THAT TO BRING US TO REALLY BE WHAT WE WANT TO BE IN TERMS OF DALLAS COLLEGE OF BEST PLACE TO WORK.

REALLY APPRECIATED THE SOCIAL ROI THAT WAS PROVIDED TO US IN THE TWO PROGRAMS. IF WE COULD POSSIBLY DO THAT IN EACH OF THE PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE, I THINK THAT'S A REALLY GOOD MESSAGE THAT WE SEND TO THE PUBLIC ABOUT THEY ALREADY KNOW WE'RE VALUE, BUT THIS WILL CEMENT THAT EVEN MORE.

SO IT'S COMING ON THE SUMMER AND I'M GOING TO GET INFORMATION ON THE SUMMER PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE.

BUT I WOULD HOPE THAT WE REALLY GET TO A DALLAS COLLEGE BECOMES A PLACE FOR KIDS, TO PARENTS TO USE THIS AS A RESOURCE FOR THE CHILDREN AT ALL TIMES OF THE YEAR.

I THINK THIS IS A REALLY GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS LIKE ON SATURDAYS.

I KNOW THAT NOWADAYS THEY SAY IF THE CHILDREN AREN'T LEARNING HOW TO CODE IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, THEY'RE ALREADY STARTING BEHIND THE CURVE.

SO I HOPE THAT OUR STAFF THAT'S RESPONSIBLE.

WILL FOR PROGRAMING FOR FOR CHILDREN LOOKS AT ALSO DOING THIS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR NOT JUST IN THE SUMMER.

AND I HOPE THAT FOR THE SUMMER THERE'S ROBUST PROGRAMS OUT THERE BECAUSE PARENTS REALLY ARE LOOKING FOR OPTIONS.

I KNOW FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND THEN EVENTUALLY CHANCELLOR AND I GUESS IT WOULD BE CHAIR OF EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE IF WE COULD GET A REPORT ON COMMUNITY CAMPUSES.

I THINK THERE'S SOME CONCERNS THERE, BUT WE NEVER GET REPORTS OR INPUT ABOUT OPPORTUNITY FOR INPUT ABOUT THAT.

AND ON THE SUMMER PROGRAMS AND GOING BACK TO THAT REAL QUICK SUMMER SUMMER PROGRAMS, IF YOU ALL COULD ASK TRUSTEES ALSO FOR INPUT BECAUSE WE'RE OUT THERE IN THE COMMUNITY AND WE KNOW WHAT WHAT WE'RE BEING ASKED ABOUT.

SO DON'T LEAVE US OUT OF THE EQUATION WHEN YOU'RE LOOKING AT POSSIBLY WHAT TO PROVIDE OR OFFER.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU, VICE CHAIR RITTER, DID YOU HAVE A COMMENT? YEAH. I JUST WANTED TO BRING TO THE BOARD'S ATTENTION ON APRIL 21ST AND 20TH AND 21ST HERE IN DALLAS, THE DALLAS HELD A CONFERENCE BY THEIR NEWLY ESTABLISHED CENTER FOR SOCIOECONOMIC MOBILITY THROUGH EDUCATION, AND IT WAS KICKED OFF WITH A PANEL DISCUSSION MODERATED BY TODD WILLIAMS OF MIT AND STEPHANIE ELIZALDE WITH ISD.

DR. SHAWNDA FLOYD WAS THERE AND PRESIDENT BOB MONG.

AND AND THEN THE REST OF THE CONFERENCE WAS PANEL DISCUSSIONS ON WHAT'S GOING ON TO REALLY STRENGTHEN THE EDUCATIONAL PIPELINE AND ENSURE STUDENT SUCCESS FOR FOR OUR STUDENTS. IN DALLAS COLLEGE, PEOPLE WERE ALL OVER THIS THING AND INVOLVED IN SEVERAL PANELS.

IT WAS ACTUALLY PROBABLY THE BEST CONFERENCE I'VE BEEN TO WAS A TRUSTEE.

I WAS SO PROUD OF WHAT WAS GOING ON.

AND YOU KNOW, THE KEY TAKEAWAY FOR ME, I MEAN, WE'VE BEEN MAKING A LOT OF INVESTMENTS IN IT AND INFRASTRUCTURE LATELY IS THE WAY THAT THIS INFRASTRUCTURE IS BEING DEPLOYED NOT ONLY WITHIN OUR INSTITUTION BUT ACROSS THESE INSTITUTIONS FOR PLANNING OF PATHWAYS, TRACKING STUDENT SUCCESS AND MAKING SURE THAT THAT OUR STUDENTS ULTIMATELY WIND UP IN THE WORKPLACE. SO THANKS TO ALL OF YOU THAT WERE THERE.

SHAWNDA WAS A ROCK STAR.

SHE GOT MORE SPONTANEOUS APPLAUSE THAN ANYBODY ELSE ON THAT PANEL.

AND THERE WERE A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THIS ROOM THAT WERE THERE.

AND I JUST HOPE WE ALL CAN GO NEXT YEAR.

THANK YOU. OKAY, LET'S START OVER HERE AS A TRUSTEE.

I WANT THIS TO CONTINUE.

THE DALLAS COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES IS A MEMBER INSTITUTION OF THE ASSOCIATION OF GOVERNING BOARDS OF COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES.

THE AGP AS SUCH DALLAS COLLEGE BOARD POLICIES RELATED TO SHARED GOVERNANCE ALIGNED WITH ASB'S POSITION, DEFINITION AND VALUES ON SHARED GOVERNANCE.

THE AGP, ALONG WITH THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS AND THE AMERICAN COUNCIL ON EDUCATION, JOINTLY PUBLISHED THE FOUNDATIONAL

[01:30:05]

1966 STATEMENT ON GOVERNMENT OF COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, A DOCUMENT THAT HAS BEEN ENDORSED BY 200 INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER ED ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND HAS SERVED AS THE ARCHITECTURE OF GOVERNANCE STRUCTURES FOR COUNTLESS INSTITUTIONS.

THIS STATEMENT WAS REAFFIRMED IN 2017 AND DEEMED MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER IN THE FACE OF INCREASING EFFORTS TO WEAKEN AND REDEFINE SHARED GOVERNANCE, AS IS HAPPENING WITH THE PROPOSED CHANGES TO DALLAS COLLEGES BOARD POLICY ON SHARED GOVERNANCE.

BECAUSE I AM AN ELECTED OFFICIAL, I HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY WHEN I SEE THINGS GOING IN A DIRECTION THAT IS NOT GOOD FOR EDUCATION, I MUST SPEAK UP.

THE 2017 REAFFIRMATION OF THE 1966 STATEMENT EMPHASIZED THAT SHARED GOVERNANCE IS BASED ON INTERDEPENDENCE, COMMUNICATION AND JOINT PLANNING AND EFFORT AMONG THE COMPONENTS OF AN INSTITUTION.

SHARED GOVERNANCE IS ABOUT HOW KEY CONSTITUENT AGENTS AND INSTITUTIONAL COMMUNITIES, TRADITIONALLY FACULTY, ADMINISTRATORS AND BOARD MEMBERS ENGAGED IN ACHIEVING A COMMONLY SUPPORTED MISSION FOR SHARED GOVERNANCE.

TO WORK, IT MUST BE BASED ON A CULTURE OF MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT BY ALL THE PROPOSED CHANGES, SEEK TO REDEFINE AND WEAKEN SHARED GOVERNANCE AT DALLAS COLLEGE SO AS TO REMOVE THE FACULTY'S PRIMACY OVER ACADEMIC PROGRAMS. A WEAK SHARED GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE TRANSLATES INTO A WEAK QUALITY OF EDUCATION.

WE ARE DOING SO WELL.

I DO NOT THINK IT'S GOOD TO CHANGE.

ACCORDINGLY, I ASK THE BOARD TO CONSIDER CAREFULLY THE CHANGES THAT ARE BEING PROPOSED AND GO BACK TO THE TABLE AND WORK ON THIS.

WE ARE ELECTED TRUSTEES, WE MUST GIVE INTERNAL OVERSIGHT TO THE CHANCELLOR AND THE COLLEGE.

WE CANNOT GIVE AWAY OUR RESPONSIBILITY BECAUSE WE ARE ACCOUNTABLE TO THE VOTERS.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

TRUSTEE. FLOYD.

OR YES, THE BEAUTY.

I DON'T WANT TO ANSWER THAT QUESTION.

OKAY, GO AHEAD. TRUSTEE GO FOR IT.

I'M. I'M WRAPPING UP MY ROOKIE YEAR.

IN A WEEK, IT WILL BE A YEAR SINCE I WAS ELECTED TO THIS BOARD, AND I HAD NO IDEA OF THE HUMBLING AND EXCITING OPPORTUNITY THAT YOU ALL PROVIDE ME.

AND, UH, TO BE HERE AND LISTEN TO STUDENTS WHOSE LIVES ARE CHANGED.

AND I JUST WANT TO LET YOU KNOW THAT YOU'VE CHANGED MINE FOREVER.

IN A GOOD WAY, I HOPE.

BUT THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE.

THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO BROADEN MY MIND AND MY MY UNDERSTANDING ABOUT WHAT WE DO.

THANK YOU ALL.

NOW. TRUSTEE BIERI. YOUR TURN.

MY TURN? NO, I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT I THINK THE FUTURE IS EXTREMELY BRIGHT FOR DALLAS COUNTY.

AND I THINK THE MAIN REASON IS, IS BECAUSE I THINK DALLAS COLLEGE HAS HAS NOT ONLY ASSUMED BUT IS REALLY TAKING SOME VERY AGGRESSIVE ACTION TO BE THE LEADER IN THE WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT AND BEING ABLE TO MAKE DALLAS COUNTY SO ATTRACTIVE TO EMPLOYERS THAT, YOU KNOW, WE WON'T BE HAVING TO COMPETE.

THEY'RE GOING TO BE WANTING TO WE'RE GOING TO BE COMPETING WHETHER WE LET SO MANY OF THEM IN, BECAUSE WE'RE GOING TO HAVE SO MANY PEOPLE WANTING TO COME HERE BECAUSE OF WHAT IS HAPPENING. I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF GOING A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO TO SAN DIEGO TO ATTEND THE INNOVATION SUMMIT THAT WAS PUT ON.

THERE WERE SOMETHING LIKE 7200 PEOPLE IN ATTENDANCE FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD.

AND THIS WAS THE INNOVATORS IN EDUCATION AND SOME OF THE MOST UNBELIEVABLE OPPORTUNITIES THAT THEY'RE NOT DREAMS, THEY'RE NOT POSSIBILITIES.

THEY'RE REALITIES THAT ALREADY EXIST.

AND AND SO WHAT I'M WHAT I'M ENCOURAGED ABOUT IS THAT WE HAD ABOUT 6 OR 7 OF THE STAFF MEMBERS FROM THE COLLEGE THERE. AND I CAN TELL YOU THAT THAT COME THIS FRIDAY, WE WILL HAVE ALREADY HAD AT LEAST ONE AND POSSIBLY TWO MEETINGS WITH THE TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES, BECAUSE WHAT WE'RE REALLY MAKING PEOPLE IN THE WORLD REALIZE IS WITH 125,000 STUDENTS, WE ARE THE GREATEST, THE MOST RIPE OPPORTUNITY FOR BRINGING INNOVATION INTO THE WORLD.

[01:35:02]

AND WE CAN DO IT QUICKER AND WE CAN DO IT IN A MORE A MORE SCALE MODEL THAN MOST ANY COMMUNITY COLLEGE CAN IN THE WORLD.

AND SO I THINK WE'RE REALLY BECOMING KNOWN.

AND WHEN YOU HAVE DAYS LIKE TODAY, WHEN YOU HAVE THE QUALITY AND THE CORE STUDENTS THAT THAT MAKE UP OUR STUDENT BODY, IT'S PUT THAT WITH TECHNOLOGY, PUT THAT WITH INNOVATION AND IT'S A NON STOPPABLE ENGINE.

SO I'M LIKE, PAUL IT'S IT'S REALLY A PRIVILEGE, YOU KNOW, TO TO BE A PART.

I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY WHO PRESENTED TODAY, AND I APOLOGIZE IF WE RUSHED SOME OF YOU THROUGH YOUR PRESENTATIONS.

BUT OBVIOUSLY, BECAUSE WE WERE VERY ENGAGED AND HAD QUESTIONS AND OBVIOUSLY CARE ABOUT THE SUCCESS OF ALL OF OUR PROGRAMS AND ALSO THANK YOU TO CHANCELLOR FOR INVITING THOSE GROUPS TO COME IN TODAY.

EACH ONE OF THEM HIGHLIGHTED OUR STRENGTHS.

ALSO, SOME OF OUR OUR STUDENTS GROWTH.

THE LAST PRESENTATION SPECIFICALLY, YOU KNOW, IT SHOWED WHAT THE VALUE IS OF GOING ON THIS ON THESE TRIPS.

AND SO HOPEFULLY WE CAN BUDGET FOR MORE STUDENTS TO HAVE THAT OPPORTUNITY IN THE NEXT YEAR.

I'D ALSO LIKE TO SAY, YOU KNOW, THANK YOU TO ALL THE BOARD MEMBERS WHO ARE SPEAKING AT GRADUATIONS NEXT WEEK.

NEXT WEEK, WE'RE ALSO HAVING A GRADUATION CEREMONY FOR BACHELOR DEGREES.

SO THAT'S REALLY EXCITING.

AND CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE STUDENTS GETTING DEGREES.

UM, AND ALSO AS ALWAYS, AS PART OF OUR BOARD MONTHLY TRADITION, I'D LIKE TO RECOGNIZE OUR ONE RETIREE WHO WILL BE RETIRING AFTER 21 YEARS OF SERVICE TO DALLAS COLLEGE.

AND THAT IS DAVID MCNABB.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE AND WE WISH YOU WELL.

AND WITH THAT, I WILL CONCLUDE TRUSTEE REMARKS AND WE WILL CONTINUE WITH OUR AGENDA.

TWO ITEM SEVEN OPPORTUNITY FOR MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND CHANCELLOR TO DECLARE CONFLICTS OF INTEREST SPECIFIC TO THIS AGENDA.

DO WE HAVE ANY CONFLICTS TO DECLARE? NO. OKAY, THEN WE WILL MOVE ON TO ITEM EIGHT, THE CONSENT AGENDA.

[8. Consent Agenda]

AND BEFORE I ENTERTAIN ANY MOTIONS, I BELIEVE TRUSTEE GARCIA, DID YOU HAVE ANYTHING? OKAY, GREAT. SO IF WE DO NOT NEED ANY DISCUSSION, CAN I ENTERTAIN A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA? WHICH WOULD BE 8.1.

8.2 AND 8.3.

SO MOVE. SECOND.

GREAT. I HAVE A MOTION IN SECOND.

ALL IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.

AYE. ALL OPPOSED.

PLEASE SAY NAY. ABSTENTIONS.

THE MOTION PASSES.

OKAY. AND ITEM NINE.

WE DO HAVE THREE POLICIES FOR FIRST READING.

[9. Policy Items - First Reading]

IF ANYBODY HAS ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS ON ANY OF THOSE, YOU CAN REACH OUT TO EITHER ROB WENDLAND OR TRICIA HORATIO FOR ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS ON ANY OF THOSE.

OH, I NEED CLARIFICATION ON DEADLINE ONE.

HAS THAT BEEN BROUGHT TO THE BOARD? HAS THAT BEEN BRIEFED TO THE BOARD? IS THAT THE QUESTION? NO, I INSPIRATIO CAN YOU ANSWER THAT QUESTION? ARE YOU REFERRING TO 9.1? BEG YOUR PARDON? 9.1.

YEAH. NO, WE HAVEN'T DONE A WORK SESSION, IF THAT'S WHAT YOU MEAN.

REGARDING THE POLICIES.

THERE'S NO ABSOLUTE RUSH ON IT, IS IT? I THINK BASED ON THE CONCERNS THAT DR.

GARCIA HAS MENTIONED, THAT THERE NEEDS TO BE A FULL DISCUSSION AND CONSIDERATION FROM THE BOARD ABOUT THIS POLICY AND WHAT WE NEED TO CONSIDER AND WHAT HER SPECIFIC CONCERNS ARE.

SO THE POLICIES ARE AS A RESULT OF THE REAFFIRMATION THAT WE'RE UNDERGOING RIGHT NOW.

SO THIS IS PART OF THE POLICY REVIEW THAT WAS CONNECTED WITH THAT.

WE DO HAVE SOMEWHAT OF A TIMELINE ON THAT, BUT WE CAN DO A WORK SESSION AT THE NEXT BOARD MEETING TO DISCUSS IT AND THEN IT WOULD BE UP FOR APPROVAL.

OKAY AT THAT TIME.

HOLD ON. UH.

THIS IS PART OF YOU SAID THE AFFIRMATION REAFFIRMATION FOR OUR ACCREDITATION.

AND SO WE DID UNDERWENT A REVIEW OF ALL OF OUR INSTRUCTIONAL POLICIES IN IN CONNECTION WITH THAT.

AND SO THESE POLICIES AND 9.1 AND THE ONE THAT WAS JUST APPROVED BY THE BOARD THAT WAS PART OF THAT REVIEW PROCESS.

[01:40:03]

OKAY. AND YOU SAID THAT YOU HAD TIME FRAME AND.

OKAY. DISCUSSION OF THE BOARD NEXT MONTH IN JUNE.

YES, I BELIEVE THAT'S THE NEXT SCHEDULE, RIGHT? YES, ON THE 4:00.

NO. SO WE COULD DO A WORK SESSION DURING ONE OF THE COMMITTEES, PROBABLY EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE, AND WE COULD PRESENT IT AT THAT TIME TO THE BOARD LIKE WE DO WITH SOME OF THE OTHER POLICIES THAT WE'VE DONE IN THE PAST.

SO DO A PRESENTATION AND DISCUSS THE POLICY CHANGES.

OKAY. WELL, WHEN WILL IT BE ON THE ACTION AGENDA? THE 4:00. IT WOULD BE FOR APPROVAL AT THAT POINT.

BECAUSE THIS IS FIRST READING.

YES. YES.

IT'LL BE FOR APPROVAL IN JUNE.

SO THIS IS FIRST READING IN MAY.

AND THIS IS JUST ASKING FOR CLARIFICATION.

SUPPOSE THE BOARD DECIDES THAT THEY WANT TO DO SOMETHING ELSE ABOUT THIS POLICY.

THEN WHAT HAPPENS? AND THEN WHAT TYPE OF TIMELINE ARE YOU ON? WE WOULD HAVE TO TABLE IT AT THAT POINT.

I CAN'T SPEAK TO THE TIMELINE BECAUSE I'M NOT MANAGING THE REAFFIRMATION PROCESS, BUT I DO KNOW THAT WE ARE ON A SCHEDULE WITH THAT.

WELL, I'VE NEVER LIKED AND YOU ALL KNOW THIS.

I'VE NEVER LIKED GETTING A BRIEFING OR A DISCUSSION ABOUT AN ITEM, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT PERTAINS TO CHANGING A POLICY AND THEN IS STUCK ON THE 4:00 MEETING FOR YOU TO TAKE ACTION ON IT.

AND WHAT ARE YOU GETTING UP? WANTED. I'M LISTENING.

NO, I SAID I'LL WAIT TILL YOU'RE THROUGH AND THEN I'LL ADDRESS IT.

OH, BUT ANYWAY.

I'M GLAD SHE CALLED IT TO MY ATTENTION SO I CAN LOOK AT IT A LITTLE BIT CLOSER.

AND YOU WERE SAYING A BRIEFING TO THE EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE.

SO WHERE DOES THE GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE FALL INTO THIS SINCE YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT CHANGE? THAT WAS REALLY JUST ME SPEAKING OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD AS TO THE ASSIGNMENT OF THE COMMITTEE.

WE WOULD DETERMINE THAT WHEN WE WERE REVIEWING THE AGENDA AND PULLING IT TOGETHER FOR THAT MONTH.

YES, WE'LL JUST HAVE TO ADDRESS THAT TRUSTEE COMPTON WHEN WE START PLANNING FOR THE JUNE 6TH MEETING, BUT WE WILL CERTAINLY BRING IT TO THE BOARD FOR DISCUSSION.

OBVIOUSLY, WITHIN THE LAST 2 OR 3 YEARS IS WHEN WE FIRST STARTED BRINGING POLICIES FOR TWO READINGS.

IT WAS TO GIVE THE BOARD AN OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE POLICIES TO RAISE ANY QUESTIONS.

WE'VE RECEIVED NONE FROM ANY BOARD MEMBERS WITH RESPECT TO THIS POLICY THUS FAR, BUT WE CAN CERTAINLY ENTERTAIN THOSE BETWEEN NOW AND JUNE 6TH AND ADDRESS THOSE IN THE APPROPRIATE FORM. I KNOW THAT WHETHER IT'S EDUCATION, WORKFORCE OR GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE OR WHATEVER COMMITTEE ENTERTAINS THIS, THIS PROPOSED POLICY, IT WILL BE PRIOR TO SECOND READING AND THE BOARD WILL HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE THEIR INPUT.

AT THAT TIME. WE WILL LIKELY HEAR FROM THE PROVOST AND HER TEAM ABOUT THE ACTIVITIES THAT SURROUNDED THE CHANGES TO THIS POLICY, THE PROPOSED CHANGES TO THIS POLICY ENGAGEMENT WITH STAKEHOLDERS HERE AT DALLAS COLLEGE, AND WE'LL ADDRESS IT AT THAT TIME.

AND IF THE BOARD DECIDED AT THAT TIME NOT TO PROCEED WITH THIS PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO POLICY, THAT WOULD HAVE AN IMPACT ON THE SCHEDULE FOR REAFFIRMATION, I THINK DANIELLE WOULD BEST BE BEST SERVED TO ADDRESS THAT.

AND I DON'T BELIEVE SHE'S SHE'S IN THE MEETING.

BUT BUT WE DO HAVE A RATHER AMBITIOUS SCHEDULE IN TERMS OF MEETING OUR REQUIREMENTS FOR REAFFIRMATION, WHICH REQUIRE SOME POLICIES TO BE ADDRESSED AND REVIEWED, AS TRICIA WAS SAYING.

AND WE'VE BEEN GOING THROUGH THAT PROCESS.

SO HOW THAT WILL IMPACT IT WILL BE PREPARED TO ADDRESS ON JUNE 6TH AS WELL.

BUT REVIEW DOESN'T NECESSARILY MEAN CHANGE.

REVIEW MEANS REVIEW.

OH, ABSOLUTELY. AND WE'RE PROPOSING CHANGES, WHICH IS THE BOARD PREROGATIVE TO CHANGE OR NOT CHANGE A POLICY.

THAT'S WHY WE BRING THE RECOMMENDED CHANGES TO YOU.

SO YEAH, WE'RE NOT VOTING ON THIS TODAY.

THIS IS THE THIS IS A PROCEDURE.

THERE'S NO ACTION TODAY.

THAT'S CORRECT. WE WERE GIVEN THIS ON FRIDAY SO THAT WE COULD REVIEW IT.

AND WE HAD QUESTIONS.

ANY TIME BETWEEN NOW AND THE NEXT MEETING, WE CAN WE CAN RAISE THEM.

AND THEN YOU WILL WE WILL SOMEHOW GET ON SOMEWHERE ON THE SCHEDULE, A MORE A MORE DETAILED EXPLANATION FOR EVERYBODY.

ABSOLUTELY. AND I TRUST IT WILL BE MORE THAN JUST TRICIA AND I THAT WILL ADDRESS THE PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE POLICY AT THAT TIME.

OKAY. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT WE'VE SEEN IT.

WHATEVER. SEE, WHAT HAPPENS IS THAT YOU ALL PUT IT DOWN.

TO BE PRESENTED AT A COMMITTEE MEETING.

THEN YOU HAVE IT ON THE 4:00 MEETING AGENDA AS AN ACTION ITEM.

SO THEN ONCE THAT HAPPENS, YOU START TALKING ABOUT, WELL, WE GOT TO HAVE IT DONE TODAY.

RATHER THAN ALLOWING TIME FOR THAT DISCUSSION TO HAPPEN.

[01:45:01]

AND IF ANY CHANGES OR SOME ACTION THAT SOMEBODY THINKS IT NEEDS TO HAPPEN OR WHATEVER, THEN YOU GOT THIS CONFLICT.

YOU'RE CREATING CONFLICT WHERE IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE CONFLICT.

AND SEE, THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY I DON'T LIKE THAT PROCESS.

NEVER HAVE. AND YOU ALL KNOW THAT I DON'T.

WELL, JUST LET ME BE REALLY CLEAR.

HOWEVER RESPECTFULLY, WE DON'T SET THE AGENDA.

WE BRING THE ITEMS AND WORK COLLABORATIVELY WITH THE ENTIRE LEADERSHIP TO BRING THE AGENDA ON A TIME FRAME THAT MAKES SENSE FOR THE BOARD WITH RESPECT TO THE ACTIONS THAT NEED TO BE TAKEN. IT'S CERTAINLY NOT OUR DECISION.

WHEN THINGS COME TO THE BOARD, WE TRY TO WORK COLLABORATIVELY TO BRING THEM AT THE APPROPRIATE TIME, BUT CERTAINLY WE'LL GIVE AN OPPORTUNITY AT ANY POINT FOR THE BOARD TO HAVE INPUT. IT'S THE BOARD POLICY MANUAL BY NAME AND IT IS THE BOARD'S POLICY.

SO WE DON'T PRESUME THAT THE BOARD SHOULD ADOPT OR WILL ADOPT ANYTHING THAT WE RECOMMEND.

WE MAKE OUR BEST RECOMMENDATIONS AND THE BOARD ACTS ACCORDINGLY.

EXCUSE ME. SO THIS IS WHY WE HAVE THIS TWO MONTH PROCESS TO BEGIN WITH, BECAUSE PREVIOUSLY I BELIEVE IT'S WHEN DR.

LASSITER WAS CHANCELLOR.

POLICIES WERE JUST PUT ON THE BOARD AGENDA WITHOUT ANY REVIEW, WITHOUT ANYTHING FOR US TO VOTE ON THAT DAY, WITHOUT MUCH TIME FOR QUESTIONS, ETCETERA.

THAT'S WHY WE WENT TO THIS TWO MONTH PROCESS.

SO WE NOW IN THIS FIRST MONTH HAVE THE POLICY BEFORE US.

SO ANY OF US THAT HAVE SUBSTANTIVE QUESTIONS OR AS MANY QUESTIONS AS WE HAVE, WE HAVE BETWEEN NOW AND THE JUNE BOARD MEETING TO ASK ALL THE QUESTIONS WE WANT AND GET AS MUCH INFORMATION AS WE WANT.

THEN AT THE JUNE BOARD MEETING AND A COMMITTEE MEETING, WE'LL HAVE A PRESENTATION ON IT.

AND THEN VOTE. BUT IT'S NOT LIKE WE DON'T HAVE ANY TIME WHATSOEVER.

TO ABSORB IT. WE HAVE A WHOLE MONTH TO ABSORB AND ANSWER QUESTIONS.

ET CETERA. ET CETERA.

AND THAT'S WHY WE WENT TO THIS TWO MONTH PROCESS.

THAT WAS THAT WAS THE INTENTION WITH THE TWO READINGS.

IT'S NOT REQUIRED BY LAW TO HAVE TWO READINGS.

WE WENT TO THAT PROCESS TO GIVE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BOARD TO CONSIDER THE PROPOSED POLICIES.

BUT MY POINT BEING, AND YOU'RE SAYING A TWO MONTH PROCESS, OKAY, WE JUST GOT THIS.

YEAH, I CAN READ IT.

AND THINK ABOUT IT.

BUT WHAT I HAVE NOT HAD IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR WHAT EVERYBODY ELSE THINKS ABOUT THAT AND FOR THEM TO BRING THEIR CONCERNS FORWARD.

AND IF FOR SOME REASON I DECIDE, WELL, NO, YOU KNOW, WE DON'T NEED TO DO THIS, THEN LIKE I SAID, IT BECOMES A CONFLICT BECAUSE YOU PUT IT ON THE 4:00 AGENDA AS AN ACTION ITEM.

IT'S NOT ON FOR ACTION.

IT'S A FIRST READING.

NO, I KNOW WHAT IT'S ON HERE FOR.

I'M TALKING ABOUT IN JUNE.

IT WILL IT LIKELY WILL BE ON THE AGENDA.

AGENDA FOR ACTION. THAT'S HOW WE'VE TYPICALLY DONE IT.

A FIRST READING FOLLOWED A MONTH LATER BY A SECOND READING.

AND THE OPPORTUNITY EXISTS FOR THE BOARD NOT TO TAKE ACTION IN JUNE.

WE UNDERSTAND THAT AS WELL.

IN THE INTEREST OF TIME, I THINK YOUR PROBLEM IS WITH THE PROCESS, NOT SO MUCH WITH THIS POLICY, RIGHT? THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE SAYING, THAT YOU DON'T LIKE OUR PROCESS TO HEAR WHAT DR.

GARCIA'S CONCERNS ARE AND WHY IN DEPTH, BECAUSE I MAY DECIDE I'M ON HER SIDE, SO MAYBE FOR FUTURE. NO, BECAUSE WE HAVEN'T DISCUSSED IT.

AFTER SHE VOICES HER CONCERNS, EVERYBODY MIGHT HAVE AN ISSUE WITH IT, BUT YOU'VE GOT IT ON THE 4:00 ACTION ITEM.

DO YOU TABLE IT OR DO YOU GO ON AND TAKE ACTION AND YOU MIGHT GET A VOTE SAYING NO.

AND ONE THING I WOULD ADD TO THAT.

I WAS JUST REMINDED FORTUITOUSLY IN JUNE, YOU HAVE THREE MEETINGS, YOU HAVE A JUNE 6TH MEETING, FOLLOWED BY A JUNE 27TH AND A JUNE 28TH MEETING.

THE OPPORTUNITY ALWAYS EXISTS THEN TO HAVE THREE BITES AT THE APPLE, SO TO SPEAK, WITH RESPECT TO THIS PARTICULAR POLICY.

BUT BY THE SAME TOKEN, WE VOTE OUR CONSCIENCE AND WE VOTE WHAT WE THINK.

SERVES THE INSTITUTION BEST, AND THAT CAN BE A43 VOTE.

IT CAN BE A61 VOTE.

IT CAN BE WHATEVER. BUT IF A MAJORITY DOESN'T VOTE FOR IT, THEN, YOU KNOW, IT GOES BACK, AS WAS DISCUSSED EARLIER WITH THE BOARD, THE BOARD'S ULTIMATE POWER IS TO VOTE NO.

OKAY. ANY OTHER COMMENTS ON THIS? 9.1 WE WILL HAVE A WORK SESSION.

ANY OTHER DO YOU WANT WORK SESSION ON ALL THREE OF THEM OR JUST 9.1? YEAH, LOOKING AT ME BECAUSE SHE JUST SAID BUT WE HAVE TIME CONSTRAINTS NOW.

DID SHE NOT SAY THAT? AND THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING.

WE GET TO THAT JUNE MEETING AND THEN IF WE WANT TO SAY, OKAY, WE NEED MORE TIME TO CONSIDER THIS, AND I

[01:50:07]

UNDERSTAND THAT THE BOARD CAN ALWAYS DECIDE WHAT THEY WANT TO DO, WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT, OR WHETHER IT TAKES MORE TIME. BUT SHE ALREADY MADE THE POINT THAT YOU'RE WORKING UNDER TIME CONSTRAINTS BECAUSE YOU HAVE SOMETHING ELSE TO DO, AND I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT.

ROB I UNDERSTAND ALL OF THIS AND I'M THROUGH.

I'M A SHUT UP. WELL, I DO WANT TO RESPOND TO THAT, THOUGH, IF I MAY.

RESPECTFULLY, MADAM CHAIR, WE WE DON'T I'M NOT CONVERSANT IN THE ACCREDITATION REQUIREMENTS.

I'M SPEAKING FROM A POSITION OF WHAT I UNDERSTAND TO BE THE CASE.

BUT I DO KNOW THAT THERE ARE CERTAIN POLICIES THAT NEED TO BE IN PLACE BEFORE OUR REAFFIRMATION VISIT.

AND THERE IS A TIME FRAME WITH RESPECT TO THAT.

I WON'T SPEAK TO IT.

I DON'T KNOW WHO MIGHT SPEAK TO IT MORE ELOQUENTLY.

SO I MEAN, WE WERE TRYING TO PREPARE FOR WE'RE CLASS OF 2025 FOR ACCREDITATION PURPOSES.

AND SO THAT MEANS THAT NEXT SPRING IS WHEN WE HAVE TO SUBMIT TO TO OUR ACCREDITOR.

AND SO WE ARE TRYING TO PUT POLICIES IN PLACE TO DEMONSTRATE THAT WE HAVE A RECORD OF HAVING THESE THINGS IN PLACE OVER A PERIOD OF TIME, THAT, YOU KNOW, MUCH OF WHAT WE'VE BEEN DOING OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS AROUND THIS POLICY STUFF IS WE'RE CLEANING UP THE OLD TRIPLE C, THE OLD MULTIPLE COLLEGE LANGUAGE TO TRY TO REFLECT CURRENT REALITY OF DALLAS COLLEGE.

AND SO CERTAINLY THERE IS A THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF DISCUSSION, A LOT OF WORK WITH MULTIPLE GROUPS TRYING TO GET THESE DRAFTS TOGETHER FOR THE BOARD'S CONSIDERATION.

AND SO WE'LL WE'LL BE BACK IN JUNE.

WE'LL HAVE THE BRIEFINGS ON THESE ITEMS AND THEN FOLLOW THE WILL OF THE BOARD FROM THERE.

AND SO THE TIME CONSTRAINT IS SPRING OF 24.

YES, IT IS.

YEAH. WITH SACHSE. ABSOLUTELY.

THE REALITY OF THE TIMELINE THAT WE HAVE TO OPERATE ON.

AND I SAID IT'S NOT JUST PUT IT TOGETHER AT THE LAST MINUTE, IT'S TO SHOW THAT THERE'S DEMONSTRATED PROGRESS, THAT WE HAVE PUT THESE THINGS IN PLACE TO REFLECT, REFLECT THE NEW DALLAS COLLEGE.

IT'S NOT THAT WE'VE JUST COME UP, COME UP WITH SOMETHING THAT WE SEND IN OUR REAFFIRMATION REPORT.

AND SO THERE ARE ELEMENTS TO THIS THAT WE'RE TRYING TO PUT IN PLACE THAT WHEN WE DO SEND THAT THING TO THEM NEXT SPRING FOR THEIR CONSIDERATION, THAT WE HAVE A RECORD OF THAT HAVING BEEN IN A PLACE FOR A PERIOD OF TIME.

SO OKAY, SO WE'RE GOING TO PUT IT ON ON JUNE.

AND THEN IF FOR WHATEVER REASON, YOU KNOW, IT DOES NOT PASS, THEN I GUESS WE'LL DEAL WITH IT AT THAT AT THAT TIME OR WHAT ITERATION PASSES, RIGHT? BECAUSE I'M NOT REALLY SURE WHAT YOUR ISSUES ARE.

AND OBVIOUSLY WE DON'T WE'RE NOT GOING TO TALK ABOUT THAT TODAY BECAUSE THAT'S YOU KNOW, IT'S NOT REALLY WE HAVEN'T REALLY HAD THE PRESENTATION.

BUT I KNOW YOU HAVE A COMMENT.

REVIEWING A POLICY DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN IT GETS CHANGED, RIGHT? SO BY THE FACT THAT WE'RE REVIEWING IT, WE ARE DOING THE DUE DILIGENCE THAT WE'RE SUPPOSED TO DO AS A BOARD AND AS AN ADMINISTRATION.

OKAY. BUT WE HAVE UNTIL SPRING OF 24.

SO I JUST WANT TO MAKE A CLARIFYING POINT ON THAT.

WE DON'T CURRENTLY HAVE IN POLICY A SHARED GOVERNANCE POLICY.

SO THE REVIEW IS OF THE POLICY SECTION, BUT WE ADDED LANGUAGE THAT SPEAKS TO SHARED GOVERNANCE.

SO THE LANGUAGE YOU SEE, BECAUSE IT'S UNDERLINED IN BLUE, REFERS TO NEW LANGUAGE, NEW POLICY LANGUAGE.

SO IT'S ACTUALLY ESTABLISHING POLICY IN THIS AREA.

WE HAVE A PRACTICE OF, OF SHARED GOVERNANCE WHERE WE SEEK INPUT ON OUR DECISIONS REGARDING THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS OF THE COLLEGE, BUT WE DON'T CURRENTLY HAVE A POLICY IN PLACE.

AND SO I APPRECIATE THAT POINT.

THAT IS WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO ESTABLISH.

SO WHEN WE GET TO THE REAFFIRMATION THAT WE HAVE THAT IN PLACE, YOU INDICATED THAT WE WERE WATERING DOWN OUR SHARED GOVERNANCE POLICY.

WE DON'T HAVE WE DON'T HAVE A SHARED GOVERNANCE POLICY.

WE'VE HAD SOME REFERENCE AND SOME PRACTICE.

AND SO WE'RE TRYING TO STRENGTHEN THAT, TRYING TO CLARIFY THAT THAT IS IMPORTANT FOR INSTITUTIONAL PURPOSES AND IS CERTAINLY IMPORTANT FOR ACCREDITATION PURPOSES, IF I COULD.

SO YOU'RE RIGHT.

WHEN SHARED GOVERNANCE FIRST CAME INTO THIS DISTRICT THAT WAS UNDER CHANCELLOR WEINRICH, BUT IT WAS NEVER DEFINED.

SO THEREFORE IT WAS LIKE WILD WEST.

AND FACULTY TOOK IT TO MEAN AND I'M SPEAKING OF MY YEARS OF EXPERIENCE ON THIS BOARD FACULTY TOOK SHARED GOVERNANCE TO MEAN BECAUSE OF THEIR INPUT. IF THE ADMINISTRATION DID NOT GO WITH THEIR INPUT, THEN THEY COULD.

THEY HAD VETO POWER.

[01:55:01]

AND THAT'S NOT WHAT SHARED GOVERNANCE IS.

SO IT'S VERY GOOD THAT FINALLY WE ARE AND I THINK I HAD MADE COMMENTS TO THIS PREVIOUSLY THAT WE DO NOT HAVE SHARED GOVERNANCE AND POLICY.

SO I'M GLAD TO SEE WE'RE FINALLY MOVING ON THAT.

SO NOW IT'S DEFINED.

MOST PEOPLE WILL UNDERSTAND WHAT SHARED GOVERNANCE IS BECAUSE WE'RE DEFINING IT.
