[1. Roll Call - Announcement of Quorum]
UM. WELCOME, EVERYONE.DO CONFIRM THAT A QUORUM IS PRESENT IN ACCORDANCE WITH CHAPTER 5.51 OF THE TEXAS OPEN MEETINGS ACT.
MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC WHO HAVE FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE DALLAS COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES WEBSITE FOR REGISTERING TO SPEAK DURING THE PUBLIC COMMENT PORTION WILL BE GIVEN FIVE MINUTES TO SPEAK.
THIS REGULAR BOARD MEETING IS BEING BROADCAST OVER THE INTERNET.
[2. Certification of Notice Posted for the Meeting]
CHANCELLOR, CAN YOU PLEASE CONFIRM THIS MEETING HAS BEEN POSTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LAW? MADAM CHAIR, I CAN CERTIFY THIS MEETING WAS POSTED ACCORDING TO SECTION 551.054 TEXAS GOVERNMENT CODE.THANK YOU. WE'LL NOW RISE FOR THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE.
I GUESS IT STANDS ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.
HONORED TO AT LEAST ONE SEEING ONE AND INDIVISIBLE.
DO WE HAVE ANY CITIZENS DESIRING TO ADDRESS THE BOARD TODAY? MS.. MOLINA. ANYONE.
AND WE WILL NOW START THE MEETING WITH OUR FIRST PRESENTATION.
[5.1. Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) 2023 National Legislative Summit featuring Student Delegates]
I WILL HAND IT OVER TO CHANCELLOR LENNON.AS WE HAVE DONE FOR THE PAST 17 YEARS.
WE TOOK STUDENTS TO THE NATIONAL LEGISLATIVE SUMMIT IN FEBRUARY AND TO SEE OUR STUDENTS BE ABLE TO ENGAGE WITH OUR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS. TO LEARN MORE ABOUT COMMUNITY COLLEGES, TO SHARE THEIR PERSONAL STORIES IS ALWAYS REWARDING.
SO I APPRECIATE TRUSTEES THAT WERE ABLE TO GO WITH US THIS YEAR AND PARTICIPATE.
SO WE TOOK FOUR STUDENTS WITH US THIS YEAR.
SO I'D LIKE TO ASK DEBBIE RICHARDS TO COME ON IN ALONG WITH OUR STUDENTS.
AND AND DEBBIE WILL INTRODUCE OUR STUDENTS.
THEY'LL TELL A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THEMSELVES AND ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE IN D.C.
BUT, YOU KNOW, IN ALL THE YEARS THAT I HAVE BEEN WITH THE COLLEGE.
AND AGAIN, THE FOUR OF THEM TO REPRESENT ALL 125,000 OF OUR STUDENTS AS THEY TELL THEIR STORIES AND THEIR JOURNEYS AND THEIR EXPERIENCE HERE AT DALLAS COLLEGE. SO IT'S GOOD TO SEE ALL OF YOU.
CHAIR BRAVO BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND CHANCELLOR LENNON, THANK YOU FOR GIVING US THE OPPORTUNITY TO ADDRESS THE BOARD AND HIGHLIGHT OUR TRIP TO THE NATIONAL LEGISLATIVE SUMMIT IN WASHINGTON, DC TO BEGIN OUR JOURNEY.
WE BOARDED SOUTHWEST AIRLINES AT 7 A.M.
THESE STUDENTS DIDN'T BAT AN EYE WHEN I TOLD THEM THEY NEEDED TO BE THERE TWO HOURS AHEAD OF TIME.
SOME OF THEM DIDN'T, INCLUDING MYSELF.
DURING THE CONFERENCE, THE STUDENTS ATTENDED SESSIONS WITH THOMAS VILSACK, SORRY, SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE AND PETE BUTTIGIEG, SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION.
THEY ATTENDED THE TEXAS DELEGATION BREAKFAST ON TUESDAY MORNING WITH ALL OF THE OTHER INDIVIDUALS FROM TEXAS REPRESENTING THE COMMUNITY COLLEGES, THE CHANCELLORS, THE PRESIDENTS AND OTHER BOARD OF TRUSTEE MEMBERS.
AND THERE WERE SIX STUDENTS THERE, FOUR FROM DALLAS AND TWO FROM SAN ANTONIO ALAMO COLLEGES.
WE LEFT THERE, WENT TO THE HILL.
THEY MET WITH CONGRESSMAN VEASEY, CONGRESSMAN ALLRED, CONGRESSWOMAN CROCKETT, CONGRESSWOMAN VAN DINE, SENATOR CORNYN AND CONGRESSMAN JAKE ELLZEY.
CONGRESSMAN ALLRED'S OFFICE ALSO ARRANGED FOR US TO HAVE A PRIVATE TOUR OF THE CAPITOL.
AND SO SEVERAL OF THE STUDENTS ATTENDED THAT.
A COUPLE OF THEM WENT OVER TO THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS DURING THAT TIME.
THESE STUDENTS WERE SELECTED FROM 40 APPLICATIONS.
[00:05:04]
OVER 40 APPLICATIONS WERE RECEIVED FOR THE STUDENTS.AND I HAVE KIND OF LABELED THEM AS THE FAB FOUR.
AND SO WE'RE GOING TO START AND LET THEM TELL YOU ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE.
AND I'M GOING TO START WITH JAROD SHELTON.
GOOD AFTERNOON, EVERYONE. MY NAME IS RON SHELTON, SO I'M THE SGA PRESIDENT FOR THE CENTRAL CAMPUS.
IT IS GOOD TO SEE YOU ALL AGAIN.
WE USED TO SEE YOU AT THIS POINT, AND I SEE HIM LIKE ALL THE TIME.
I DON'T THINK IT'S BEEN ANY OTHER STUDENT AT DALLAS COLLEGE.
I SPENT MORE TIME THAN I HAVE.
SO I THINK THAT'S LIKE A BRAGGING, RIGHT? SO I DID ATTEND THE COLLEGE DAY AS WELL.
SO WHOEVER TOOK TOOK THE LEAD IN THAT AND BRING BRING THE INSTITUTION TO TAMPA.
ACTUALLY, IT GOT ME CONNECTED IN ROOMS I NEVER THOUGHT I'D BE IN.
SO I NOW HAVE CORRESPONDENCE WITH WITH JASMINE CROCKETT'S OFFICE.
I GOT CORRESPONDENCE WITH SENATOR NATHAN JOHNSON'S OFFICE, AND I THINK MY BEST EXPERIENCE WAS A BETH VAN DUYNE BECAUSE SHE HAD US CLIMB OUT A WINDOW AND I WAS NOT EXPECTING A TEAM LEADER.
THE SPANISH RESTAURANT. OH MY GOSH.
YEAH. SO OTHER THAN THAT, I DEFINITELY DO WANT TO BE SERIOUS AND DEFINITELY TAKE THE TIME TO THINK.
AND AND I DON'T WANT TO SAY I APPRECIATE YOU GUYS FOR GIVING US THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRAVEL.
SO THANK YOU. NEXT UP IS GISELLE LOPEZ.
AS YOU GUYS PROBABLY KNOW, MY NAME IS GISELLE.
I'M A SOPHOMORE AT DALLAS COLLEGE.
I JUST WANT TO THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH, ESPECIALLY DR.
GLENNON, FOR EVERYTHING YOU DID FOR US AND FOR WHAT EVERYONE DID FOR US AT THE TRIP.
I HONESTLY HAD SUCH AN AMAZING TIME GOING INTO THIS.
I DID NOT KNOW WHAT I WAS WALKING INTO, BUT DR.
AND I JUST WANT YOU GUYS TO KNOW THAT YOU GUYS HAVE A GREAT TEAM HERE.
UM, HOW DOES HOW TO DEAL WITH SLEEPY PASSENGERS OVERALL, I WOULD SAY THAT I LEARNED A LOT NOT ONLY ABOUT MYSELF, BUT ABOUT THE LEGACY THAT I WANT TO LEAVE.
YOU CAN'T JUST STAY STEADY AND THERE'S PEOPLE OUT THERE TO MAKE THAT POSSIBLE FOR YOU.
OF COURSE, WE ALL HAVE CONFLICT.
I LEARNED HOW TO DEAL WITH CONFLICT AT THE TRIP.
THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS, RIGHT.
I ALSO LEARNED THAT I COULD BE SUCCESSFUL AT SOMETHING.
SO, YOU KNOW, SOME PEOPLE DON'T GROW UP WITH THE MOST SELF ESTEEM.
LONDON AND DAVEY RICHARDS FOR ALLOWING ME TO BE TRANSPARENT WITH MY STORY.
IT'S NOT AN EASY STORY TO TELL.
IT TOOK ME A WHILE TO, YOU KNOW, ACTUALLY START SAYING HOW I FELT, BUT THEY MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR ME TO BE TRANSPARENT AND REAL WITH MY STORY BECAUSE THEY TOLD ME THAT THAT MAKES ME A STRONGER INDIVIDUAL AND NOT TO HIDE IT AWAY, BUT TO EMBRACE IT.
SO THOSE ARE SOME OF THE KEY THINGS THAT I TOOK AWAY FROM IT.
ALSO THAT I LOVE SPANIARD FOOD.
THANK YOU, DR. LENNON. SO, YEAH, SHE HAD A GOOD POINT RIGHT THERE.
AND YEAH, JUST THANK YOU ALL FOR EVERYONE WHO JOINED IN.
IT WAS REALLY NICE TO GET TO MEET YOU.
TRULY, REALLY NICE OPPORTUNITY.
AND I REALLY APPRECIATE WHAT YOU GUYS HAVE DONE.
I APPRECIATE THE LESSONS AND I APPRECIATE THE CONFLICT.
[00:10:09]
HOPEFULLY YOU REMEMBER ME FROM THE TRIP.UH, SO I'M THE SEBATA PRESIDENT AT NORTHLAKE COLLEGE AND I AM GOING TO GRADUATE WITH AN ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE OF ARTS WITH A FIELD OF STUDY IN PSYCHOLOGY IN THE MONTH OF MAY.
I REALLY CAN'T DESCRIBE ENOUGH WITH WORDS HOW GRATEFUL I AM TO HAVE GONE TO WASHINGTON, D.C., AND BE PART OF THE NATIONAL LEGISLATIVE SUMMIT.
UM, TO TELL YOU A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MYSELF.
I'VE NEVER CONSIDERED MYSELF TO BE A LEADER.
I'VE ALWAYS CONSIDERED MYSELF TO BE A FOLLOWER BECAUSE I'VE ALWAYS BEEN AFRAID OF REPRESENTING STUDENTS AND MAYBE REPRESENT BEING AFRAID OF DOING IT THE WRONG WAY BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH GUIDANCE AND GOING ON THE TRIP AND TELLING MY STORY AS AN IMMIGRANT, AS A STUDENT WHO WANTED AN EDUCATION AND REPRESENTING EVERY STUDENT AT NORTHLAKE COLLEGE TAUGHT ME A LOT ABOUT MYSELF AND WHAT I AM CAPABLE OF DOING AND FOR MYSELF AND FOR OTHERS.
UM, I'VE ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED IN STUDYING LAW, BUT I NEVER HAD THE MOTIVATION UNTIL I WENT TO WASHINGTON, D.C. AND THANK YOU SO MUCH TO ALL OF YOU FOR BEING SO NICE AND BEING THE BEST MENTORS FOR US TO BE ABLE TO SPREAD THE MESSAGE OF HOW TO BE LEADERS AND NOT BE AFRAID OF FACING OUR FEARS.
THANK YOU FIRST FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY TO BE HERE TODAY WITH ALL OF YOU.
AND MY NAME IS DIANA ALGER, AND I'M STUDYING BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION.
I'M ABOUT TO GRADUATE IN MAY AND HOPEFULLY STILL THE IDEA OF MY RESTAURANT IS ON.
SO FOR THIS TRIP, UM, IT WAS REALLY HARD TO GET OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE.
I NEVER THOUGHT, I'M GOING TO BE IN THIS OPPORTUNITY TO BE HONEST.
UM, BEING IN WASHINGTON DC MADE ME.
MEET A NEW PEOPLE, NEW ENVIRONMENT.
GET OUT OF MY CULTURE, MY LIFE.
AND WAS AN AMAZING, AMAZING THING.
I THINK THE FIRST TIME I STARTED TO SPEAK OVER THERE, I WAS SHAKING LIKE I DO NOW.
BUT AFTER THAT, I HAD A LOT OF CONFIDENCE TO SPEAK OUT LOUD BECAUSE I NEVER SPOKE LOUD AND.
I WAS MY PLEASURE MEETING CHANCELLOR LENNON AND DEBBIE.
AND IT WAS MY PLEASURE TO MEET MR. CLEF AND HIS WIFE ALSO.
AND I CAN'T SAY THAT WAS AN GREAT EXPERIENCE OVER THERE, BUT I FIGURED OUT MR. LENNON, HE'S A GOOD PHOTOGRAPHER THERE.
THANK YOU FOR THIS. THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT PICTURES.
I THINK THIS IS GOING TO LIKE TAKE ME MOVE FORWARD IN MY LIFE AND MY DEGREE AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR INVITING ME AND MAKING ME BE HERE AND MAKE ME BE A NOTICEABLE PERSON.
SO I WANT TO THANK YOU AGAIN FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE ABOUT OUR TRIP.
AND YOU CAN TELL FROM THESE FOUR STUDENTS THAT WHAT A LASTING IMPRESSION THEY LEFT THERE AND FROM EVERYONE THAT WE MET, FROM THE SENATOR'S OFFICES TO THE CONGRESSIONAL OFFICES TO THE STAFF WITH ACT AND TO THE STUDENTS THAT WERE THERE, OTHER CHANCELLORS AND PRESIDENTS, THEY LEFT.
THEY LEFT A LASTING IMPRESSION WITH EVERYONE, AND I'M VERY PROUD OF THEM.
SO AND WE'LL SAY ON THAT LAST POINT AGAIN, WE'RE ONE OF A FEW THAT TAKE STUDENTS.
THERE ARE CERTAINLY OTHER COMMUNITY COLLEGES AROUND THE COUNTRY THAT WILL BRING SOME STUDENTS WHERE WE WERE AMONGST THE FIRST TO DO THAT 17 YEARS AGO AND HAVE CONTINUED TO DO SO. BUT WHEN THESE FOUR AMAZING STUDENTS SPOKE IN EVERY ROOM THAT THEY SPOKE IN, THEIR PERSONAL
[00:15:09]
STORIES AND JOURNEYS WILL CAPTIVATE YOU.AND AND SO THEY DID THAT IN EVERY ROOM THEY WERE IN.
TO THE EXTENT WHERE THERE ARE OTHER COLLEGES IN TEXAS THAT ASK FOR US TO.
HOUSTON BUT THAT JUST REALLY SPEAKS TO EVEN WHERE THERE ARE OTHER COLLEGES.
SO I HOPE YOU ALL GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO INTERACT AND GET TO KNOW THESE FOUR AMAZING STUDENTS.
TRUSTEE COMPTON. OH, I JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT I THINK THAT THE INITIATIVE THAT THE BOARD.
HAS BEEN SUPPORTIVE OF AND PUT FORTH IS TO ALLOW OUR STUDENTS TO TRAVEL TO DIFFERENT VENUES AND, AS YOU SAY, PUT YOU IN A DIFFERENT ARENA FROM WHAT YOU'RE NORMALLY USED TO.
I THINK IT'S ONE OF THE BEST THINGS THAT WE'VE DONE AS A BOARD.
AND OVER THE YEARS I'VE HEARD SOME AMAZING STORIES.
I HAVE A QUESTION FOR THE STUDENTS.
YOUR FIRST TIME? YEAH, THIS IS MY FIRST TIME IN D.C..
IN D.C.? YEAH, THAT WAS MY FIRST TIME AS WELL.
YEAH, THIS IS ACTUALLY MY SECOND, BUT IT WAS DEFINITELY MORE ENJOYABLE THAN THE FIRST.
ALSO, WHEN I WAS DOWN IN AUSTIN WITH THE STUDENTS FROM COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT DAY, I TOLD THEM, AND I'M TELLING YOU NOW WHEN YOU'RE DEALING WITH THESE POLITICIANS, IF THEY DON'T REMEMBER ANYTHING ELSE, THEY REMEMBER WHEN YOU LET THEM KNOW FOR SURE THAT YOU VOTE AND THEY RESPECT YOUR VOTE.
SO WHEN YOU START DEALING WITH THESE POLITICIANS SOMEWHERE BEFORE YOU LEAVE, YOU LET THEM KNOW THAT YOU ARE A VOTER, BECAUSE THAT'S ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO.
AND THESE POLITICIANS, THEY RESPECT THAT BECAUSE THEY WANT THAT VOTE.
BUT, YOU KNOW, I JUST WANTED TO ADD THOSE COMMENTS.
AND SO I'M HERE IF Y'ALL EVER NEED ANYTHING AND I'M SURE Y'ALL CAN HELP US WITH CRAFTING SOME POLICY AROUND MAYBE A STUDENT TRUSTEE THINK THAT WAS SOMETHING WE TALKED ABOUT AND MAYBE IT MAY NOT BE FOR YOU, BUT FOR OTHER GENERATIONS OF STUDENTS OF DALLAS COLLEGE WHO CAN BE ABLE TO INTERACT NOT JUST AT A SUMMIT IN DC BUT ON A MONTHLY BASIS WITH US.
SO THANK YOU FOR COMING AND SHARING YOUR STORY.
LET ME ALSO SAY I AGREE WITH YOU, CONGRESSMAN VAN DIEN, PUT US THROUGH.
IT WAS INTERESTING TO WATCH OUR CHAIRMAN CRAWL THROUGH A WINDOW IN A DRESS, IN A DRESS TO GO OUT.
AND SHE SAYS, I THINK WE'LL HAVE A BETTER PICTURE IF WE GET OUT ON THE ROOF.
AND THAT'S WHAT WE DID, RIGHT.
WE ALL CRAWLED THROUGH THE WINDOW AND AND HAD OUR PICTURE.
BUT I THINK THAT THAT THIS WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR MYSELF.
IT WAS IT LETS US KNOW WHY WE'RE HERE.
THANK YOU. WE CAN DO A PICTURE.
LET'S DO A PICTURE. YEAH. COME ON UP AND ASK.
ARE WE GOING TO GO IN FRONT WITH THEM? IN FRONT? WE'LL STAND JUST A FEW.
[00:21:17]
SO. SO CONTINUING OUR THEME, WE ALSO HAVE ANOTHER GROUP OF STUDENTS WHO ATTENDED THE TEXAS ASSOCIATION OF CHICANOS IN HIGHER EDUCATION ATACHI[5.2. Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education (TACHE) 2023 Conference featuring Students and Staff]
HERE RECENTLY. AND SO THEY WENT ALL THE WAY TO HOUSTON.BUT WE HAD 11 STUDENTS AND A NUMBER OF OUR STAFF THAT WENT DOWN THERE AND PARTICIPATED.
SO BEFORE WE GET TO THE STUDENTS, I'D LIKE TO ASK DR.
JOSEPH TO COME UP AND SHARE A FEW WORDS AND THEN INTRODUCE THEM.
UM, FIRST, I WANT TO THANK THE STAFF WHO HELPED ORGANIZE THE TRIP FOR THE STUDENTS.
AS YOU ALL KNOW, THAT IS A THAT IS A HUGE TASK AND THEY DID GREAT WORK.
I'M EXCITED TO INTRODUCE ONE HUSKIES AND ALTHOUGH ONE HAS MOVED ON TO AN OPPORTUNITY TO EDUCATE TEXAS, HE HAS GRACIOUSLY, GRACIOUSLY RETURNED TO TALK ABOUT THE GREAT WORK HE HAS DONE WITH OUR DALLAS COLLEGE STUDENTS.
EVERYONE WAS GOING TO INTRODUCE MYSELF, BUT THANK YOU FOR THE INTRODUCTION.
SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT THAT I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT I MENTIONED IS HOW GRATEFUL WE ARE.
WE WERE FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND THE CONFERENCE ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO NOW, AND SO WE DID HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE THERE, BUT ALSO A TEXAS TRIO, WHICH MAKES ME IMMENSELY PROUD OF THE STUDENTS THAT THAT WERE THERE, WHICH IS THOSE TWO GENTLEMEN OVER THERE, UH, XAVIER CHANCELLOR AND CARLOS CORTEZ.
AND SO WHAT IS THE ROLE OF MENTORSHIP WITHIN THAT? AND THAT WAS THE TITLE, THE ROLE OF MENTORSHIP BUILDING A MILITARY MAN PROGRAM.
SO WHAT HAS THE PROGRAM DONE FOR YOU? AS YOU ALL MAY KNOW, THE PROGRAM IS NEW IN THE SENSE OF LIKE IT'S ONLY IN THE SECOND YEAR.
HOW DOES THAT LOOK LIKE AND WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE AND WHAT IS IT THAT WE CAN DO? SO ONE OF THE GOALS WAS LET'S HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY WHERE STUDENTS CAN GO AND PRESENT AND TALK ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES.
AND SO THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE DID, AND I'M GRATEFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY WE APPLIED FOR.
TWO, WE'RE SUBMITTED TWO PROPOSALS, AND BOTH OF THEM WERE ACCEPTED.
AND WE WERE THERE FOR THAT, TOO.
SO I'LL ALSO BE INTRODUCING THEM A LITTLE BIT.
BUT AS WE TALK ABOUT BEING INTENTIONAL, BEING STUDENT CENTERED, THAT'S ENOUGH ABOUT ME AND SPECIFICALLY THE PROGRAM, THE MILITARY PROGRAM, WHAT IT IS THAT WORK THAT IS THAT WE'RE DOING AND BEING INTENTIONAL AND BEING STUDENT CENTERED IN WHAT WE DO.
I WANT YOU TO HEAR FROM THE STUDENTS THEMSELVES.
SO I'M PROUD TO PRESENT JESSE LOPEZ.
AS WELL AS TO CELIA CRUZ, CARLOS CORTEZ AND CHANCELLOR.
[00:25:11]
HI EVERYONE. MY NAME IS CECILIA CRUZ.I'M FROM THE EASTFIELD CAMPUS.
I FIRST WANT TO EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE TO YOU ALL.
SO THIS CONFERENCE WAS WAY OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE.
I REALLY HAD TO PUT MYSELF OUT THERE.
I KNOW WE HAD A BATCH OF TOWN WHERE WE DID THE BYLAWS AND IT WAS ALL NEW TO ME.
BUT ONE THING THAT I COULD PROUDLY AND CONFIDENTLY SAY IS THAT I ENJOYED EVERY PART OF IT.
I MET NEW PEOPLE, I MET NEW FRIENDS.
IT WAS SUCH A GREAT EXPERIENCE.
AND AS I WAS THINKING OF LIKE WHAT TO SHARE BACK TO MY CAMPUS AT EASTFIELD, I WAS LIKE, THE MOST IMPACTFUL AND IMPORTANT PART IS THAT WE GET STUDENTS WHO ARE LIKE ME IN THE FUTURE TO GO TO THESE EVENTS BECAUSE YOU EXPOSE THEM TO NEW TO THIS NEW COMMUNITY.
AND I THINK ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PART THAT I GOT OUT OF IT, I WAS REFLECTING BACK AND I WAS LIKE, YOU KNOW WHAT? WHAT WAS THE MOST HEARTWARMING PART? AND IT'S NOT WHAT THEY SAID, BUT IT'S SOMETHING THAT THEY DIDN'T SAY.
WE KNOW THAT THERE ARE THEY KNOW THAT THERE ARE OBSTACLES HERE IN FRONT OF US THAT EVEN IF WE TRY OUR BEST, EVEN IF WE USE ALL OF OUR GRIT, WE'RE NEVER GOING TO GET TO THAT PART THAT WE WANT TO. AND THAT'S WHY THEY'RE THERE, BECAUSE THEY THEY KNOW THE OBSTACLES AND THEY COULD SHARE IT.
SO AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR THIS WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE.
SO. I'M CURIOUS WHAT IMPACT IT HAD ON YOU TO ATTEND THE CONFERENCE WHERE IT WAS FULL OF LATINO EDUCATIONAL PROFESSIONALS, HIGHER EDUCATIONAL PROFESSIONALS.
SO I AM PART OF AN ORGANIZATION CALLED LULAC.
SO THAT STANDS FOR LEAGUE OF UNITED LATIN AMERICAN CITIZENS.
LIKE, THESE ARE OUR PEOPLE, THIS IS WHAT WE NEED TO HEAR.
THEY WERE LIMITED ABOUT THE STUDENTS THAT WERE GOING.
SO I WENT UP THERE REPRESENTING COLLEGE OR EASTFIELD.
AND IT'S IMPORTANT THAT I THAT I SHARE THAT.
WHEN I WENT THERE, I WAS REALLY LOOKING FOR SUPPORTERS OR ADVISORS, MENTORS ACTUALLY, WHO COULD SUPPORT MY PEOPLE BACK OVER THERE BECAUSE IT'S SO HARD TO FIND NOT ONLY A LATINO, BUT A LATINA WHO IS A WOMAN WHO KNOWS OUR STRUGGLES AND THAT COULD GO AND MENTOR OUR COMMUNITY BACK OVER THERE.
WELL, HAVEN'T SEEN YOU IN A WHILE.
ALL RIGHT. SO GOING BACK TO THE TORCH, SINCE THAT WAS MY SECOND ROW IN THE BOAT, I HAD EXTREME AMOUNTS OF FUN. I COULDN'T EVEN TELL YOU.
HONESTLY. THAT'S WHEN I LOOK BACK ON THAT DAY.
I FELT LIKE I WAS RIGHT WHERE I WAS MEANT TO BE.
THEY TALK LIKE ME. THEY HAVE SIMILAR STORIES TO ME.
THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO FILL THEIR FAFSA, STUFF LIKE THAT, YOU KNOW? Y'ALL KNOW THE STRUGGLES, RIGHT? YEAH. SO JUST BEING ABLE TO SURROUND MYSELF AND CREATE NEW CONNECTIONS, I WAS ABLE TO COME OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE, REALLY EXPRESS WHO I AM.
I WAS ABLE TO CONNECT WITH NEW PEOPLE THAT I THOUGHT I WOULD NEVER GET TO MEET, LIKE BOOK AUTHORS.
I ACTUALLY WON A BOOK IN A RAFFLE, SO THAT WAS FUN.
I DON'T KNOW HOW I CAME IN KIND OF LATE TO THAT MEETING, BUT WE'RE NOT GOING TO TALK ABOUT THAT.
[00:30:03]
IT WAS ONLY A FEW MINUTES LATE, YOU KNOW, JUST ONE.UM, NEVERTHELESS, I REALLY DO APPRECIATE, ESPECIALLY WITH MISS COMPTON SAID ABOUT MAKING SURE STUDENTS ARE GETTING INTO THESE AREAS, ESPECIALLY MYSELF.
I CONSIDER MYSELF A LOW INCOME HOUSEHOLD.
SO A TRIP TO HOUSTON FOR FREE.
THAT WAS MY NUMBER ONE MOTIVATOR.
BUT. YOU KNOW, FREE, FREE, FREE, FREE 99.
YOU KNOW, LIKE I SAY, NO, BUT ALSO YOU'RE GOING TO LEARN A LOT.
AND I ALWAYS, ALWAYS BEING THE PRESIDENT OF MY BROOKHAVEN STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION, I ALWAYS ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO TAKE THESE OPPORTUNITIES BECAUSE THEY IMPACT YOU A LOT.
THEY CHANGE THEIR PERSPECTIVE.
THEY MAKE YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE.
AND IF YOU'RE FEARLESS, ABSOLUTELY FEARLESS.
AND I FEEL LIKE THAT'S ONE OF THE MOST THINGS I APPRECIATE.
MY FRIENDS SAW ME DANCING OUT THERE.
I KNOW Y'ALL REMEMBER ME DANCING, BUT.
YEAH, IT WAS THE LAST EVENT, BUT IT WAS THE FUNNEST EVENT.
NOT THE MOST EDUCATIONAL, BUT THE FUNNEST.
NEVERTHELESS, LIKE I SAID, I DID LEARN A LOT.
I LEARNED EXACTLY WHAT MY FRIEND SAID.
THEY TELL YOU TO GANAS, WHICH MEANS PUT IN THE WORK, PUT IN THE EFFORT.
BUT WHAT'S IT WORTH IF THE SYSTEM IS NOT FOR YOU? SO THAT'S SOMETHING THAT I REALLY TOOK AWAY FROM IT, NOT TO ALWAYS FEEL LIKE SOMEONE IS FIGHTING FOR YOU BECAUSE SOMETIMES PEOPLE ARE REALLY NOT.
SO FIGHT FOR YOURSELF, INDIVIDUALIZE YOURSELF AND BE POWERFUL IN WHO YOU ARE.
UH, HELLO. GOOD AFTERNOON TO YOU.
FIRST OF ALL, I WANT TO SAY BEING A HISPANIC MALE IS NOT ALWAYS THE GREATEST.
WE DEAL WITH A LOT OF MACHISMO, EVEN AS MALES IN GENERAL.
THERE'S THAT MASCULINITY THAT WE HAVE TO BE STRONG MEN.
SEEING LIKE SEEING PROFESSIONALS.
HONEY, YOU KNOW, MAN CRYING TO ME.
IT WAS A IT WAS LIKE A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE.
MY FATHER IS NOT THE TYPE TO SHOW EMOTION.
SO IT WAS IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE SEEING THAT.
AND IT'S REALLY EYE OPENING EXPERIENCE.
UM, FIRST OF ALL, I WANT TO THANK JUAN AND THE MILITARY PROGRAM AND ALSO MR. LONDON, BECAUSE HE'S ALWAYS, ALWAYS AT OUR EVENTS AND THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT.
LIKE I SAID, HAVING PROFESSIONALS THERE, HAVING PEOPLE HIRE US, ACTUALLY PUTTING PUTTING THAT EFFORT AND PUTTING THAT, YOU KNOW, THAT INTEREST IN OUR PROGRAMS MAKES US FEEL INCLUDED. IT MAKES US FEEL LIKE WE'RE IMPORTANT.
THIS EVENT, YOU KNOW, IT WAS GREAT.
I DON'T CRY IN FRONT OF PEOPLE AND I DON'T SHOW MY EMOTIONS.
I'M THAT TYPE OF PERSON THAT DOESN'T SHOW EMOTIONS.
AND AND OF COURSE, IT HELPED ME A LOT.
UM, THE ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM AS A WHOLE.
LIKE I WOULD LOVE FOR Y'ALL TO PUT EXTREME FOCUS ON THAT BECAUSE YOU KNOW, IT'S OPENING EYES TO GENERATIONS THAT, THAT HAVE LIVED THROUGH, THROUGH, YOU KNOW, THE HARDSHIPS OF HAVING OTHERS THAT DON'T SHOW EMOTION OR NO FATHER FIGURES IN THE HOUSEHOLD.
YOU KNOW, THESE MEN ARE NOT JUST OUR MENTORS.
LIKE WE'VE I'VE SAID THIS COUNTLESS TIMES.
JUAN HAS BEEN LIKE A BROTHER TO ME.
YOU KNOW, SOMETIMES IN THE MORNINGS, 3:00 IN THE MORNING, I TEXT HIM ONE TIME AND LIKE, THIS IS GOING ON IN MY LIFE AND LIKE, LIKE, CAN YOU HELP ME OUT? IT'S NOT, YOU KNOW, IT'S NOT.
IT'S HIS JOB INSIDE OF DALLAS COLLEGE, BUT OUTSIDE HE DOESN'T.
HE DOESN'T HAVE TO TAKE AN ACCOUNTABILITY OR TEXAS, BUT HE DOES IT.
AND THAT'S THE PART PART OF THIS PROGRAM THAT'S, YOU KNOW, AMAZING.
AND THAT I REALLY HOPE THAT Y'ALL PUSH, PUSH AND PUSH FOR MORE EDUCATION.
IT WASN'T ONLY JUST LIKE EDUCATIONAL, BUT IT WAS ALSO FOR OUR BENEFIT.
I'M AN ENGINEERING MAJOR, SO I DON'T REALLY GET TIME FOR MYSELF.
[00:35:10]
HE'S A LITTLE TALLER THAN ME, SO I HAD TO SCOOT DOWN A LITTLE BIT.FIRST OF ALL, I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY.
HI, EVERYBODY. HOW ARE Y'ALL DOING? IT'S GOOD TO SEE Y'ALL. UM, MY NAME IS EXECUTIVE CHANCELLOR, AND MY EXPERIENCE AT THE TASHA EVENT WAS AMAZING.
UM, BEING ABLE TO LEARN AND ACTUALLY SEE A VIDEO, A SHORT FILM.
IT ENCOURAGED ME TO GET TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE CULTURE.
UM, THEN ONE OF THE ONLY AFRICAN AMERICAN MALES THERE OF HISPANIC DESCENT WAS KIND OF CRAZY, YOU KNOW? BUT IT WAS VERY ENCOURAGING TO JUST BE THERE AND JUST BE SURROUNDED BY PEOPLE THAT WERE ENCOURAGED YOU TO DO BETTER WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LIFE AS ONE DID FOR US AT THE MALE ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM.
A LOT OF TRUST TO JUST SEND US TO.
OUT OF ALL THE STUDENTS THAT WERE AT THE MALE ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM.
UM, WE LEARNED VARIOUS THINGS.
UM. WE LEARN THAT THE EVENTS AND THE SPEAKERS THERE CAME FROM SIMILAR BACKGROUNDS AS US, AND SO MOSTLY EVERYONE THERE HAD CAME FROM SOME TYPE OF STRUGGLE AND HOW WE COULD LEAD TO PROGRESSION AND BECOMING BETTER IN WHAT WE DO.
AS FAR AS MALE ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM, IT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST PROGRAMS THAT I JOINED AT MOUNTAIN VIEW, AND WHEN I SAY IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST PROGRAMS THAT I'VE JOINED AND IT MADE ME WANT TO JOIN OTHER ORGANIZATIONS AND TELL PEOPLE ABOUT THESE RESOURCES SO THAT THEY CAN HAVE THEM.
AND I CAN SAY FOR SURE THAT DALLAS COLLEGE WAS.
IS A GREAT SCHOOL FOR, YOU KNOW, STUDENTS TO BE ABLE TO REACH OUT AND HAVE THESE RESOURCES AND BE ABLE TO COME TO EVENTS, BECAUSE I DIDN'T REALLY TRAVEL A LOT UNTIL I CAME HERE.
I WASN'T THINKING ABOUT COLLEGE.
AND ONCE I GOT HERE, IT WAS LIKE SOMETHING WENT OFF.
AND THAT SPARK JUST ENCOURAGED ME TO, YOU KNOW, GET OTHER PEOPLE INVOLVED AND JUST REALLY HELP AS MUCH AS I CAN BECAUSE SOMEONE'S ALWAYS HELPING ME, YOU KNOW, FROM THE TOP TO THE BOTTOM.
AND I CAN SAY CHANCELLOR LEINEN HAS BEEN AND HAS A LOT OF EVENTS.
BUT AGAIN, I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY.
IT WAS VERY INSPIRATIONAL, EDUCATIONAL, AND IT WAS A GREAT EVENT.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR SUPPORT.
SPECIAL SHOUT OUT TO TRUSTEE FLORES FOR BEING HERE WITH US.
JOSEPH, FROM MARISOL TO OUR CHAPERONS, FRANCISCO OBREGON AND THE AUDIENCE.
WE HAD ANOTHER CHAPERON, ELIZABETH CASAREZ, WHO COULDN'T BE HERE.
BUT WHAT I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT ABOUT THE TEXAS ASSOCIATION FOR CHICANOS AND HIGHER EDUCATION IS THAT IT CREATES A FORUM AND AN ENVIRONMENT NOT JUST FOR OUR STUDENTS, BUT ALSO FOR OUR TALENT.
SO WE TOOK OVER AROUND 27 EMPLOYEES AND 11 STUDENTS.
THEY'RE DOING HOMEWORK. THEY REACHED OUT.
THEY'RE LIKE, GOT TO DO SOME HOMEWORK.
NEXT THING YOU KNOW, I WAS ENROLLING FOR MY MASTER'S.
THAT THAT'S A LEVEL OF INSPIRATION THAT I HAVE ON YOU.
AND SO I HOPE THAT WE'RE ABLE TO CONTINUE TO PARTICIPATE.
AND WE'RE CURRENTLY WORKING ON LAUNCHING A CHAPTER.
SO SHOUT OUT TO ROBERT REYES, JUAN VASQUEZ, JONATHAN ESTRADA AND ANA RAMIREZ, AS WELL AS CARLY ROSAS, WHO HELPED JUST PUT EVERYTHING TOGETHER. GREAT START TO TRYING TO ESTABLISH A DALLAS COLLEGE CHAPTER, BUT WE COULDN'T DO IT WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT AND ALL THE SUPPORT THAT WE'RE GETTING INTERNALLY.
[00:40:08]
SOMETHING THAT WE SHOULD CONTINUE TO PURSUE.IN 1992 WHEN I WAS A SECRETARY AT DALLAS COLLEGE.
FERNANDEZ SAYING THAT TORTURE INSPIRED HER TO GO TO GET HER BACHELOR'S.
I'M SORRY, MASTERS. I'M THINKING ABOUT MYSELF BECAUSE YOU ALL HAVE HEARD ME SAY THIS BEFORE.
SO THAT'S THE TYPE OF IMPACT IT CAN HAVE ON US THAT ARE STUCK AND DON'T THINK WE CAN.
THE TWO YOUNG MEN THAT PRESENTED THE MALE ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM, YOU DID AN EXCELLENT JOB.
AND SO JUST CONTINUE DEVELOPING YOUR LEADERSHIP.
YOU'RE CERTAINLY POSITIONING YOURSELF FOR SUCCESS.
THE TWO YOUNG WOMEN, SAME THING.
I INTERACTED MORE WITH GISELLE, BUT IT WAS SO GOOD TO SEE THE STUDENTS THERE.
AND LAST YEAR WHEN I WENT TO THATCHER, WE HAD MORE STAFF THAN USUAL.
LAST YEAR I DIDN'T FEEL AS BAD.
AND I REMEMBER, I DON'T KNOW, IT'S BEEN MAYBE FIVE, TEN YEARS AGO THAT I MADE THE CASE FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL LEVELS OF STAFF, NOT JUST THE UPPER LEADERSHIP.
SO TO ME, THIS WAS A DEMONSTRATION OF THAT OF THE COMMITMENT WE, I THINK, ARE FINALLY GETTING TO IN TERMS OF ALL LEVELS OF STAFF BEING ABLE TO ENGAGE IN THESE TYPES OF PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES.
TO THE EXTENT THAT YOU HAD A SECRETARY THAT NOW HAS A MASTER'S DEGREE.
DR. LANNAN, FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS, FOR SUPPORTING THESE TYPES OF EVENTS AND INVOLVEMENT.
AND WE'RE SO PROUD OF YOU ALL, NOT ONLY THE STUDENTS, BUT OUR STAFF.
FRANCISCO. I DIDN'T FORGET IT.
THANK YOU ALL. YOU NOW COME UP.
[6.1. Announcements from the Chancellor]
CHANCELLOR WELL, THANK YOU, MADAM CHAIR, AND I'LL KEEP MY REMARKS BRIEF, BUT I'LL POINT OUT THAT MARCH IS WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH.SO AS I SIT UP HERE WITH MADAM CHAIR AND THE MAJORITY OF OUR BOARD THAT ARE WOMEN, WHEN I LOOK OUT AND I SEE OUR PROVOST AND OUR VICE CHANCELLORS AND OUR VICE PROVOST AND OUR PRESIDENTS, OUR MANY OF OUR
[00:45:06]
FACULTY LEADERS THERE IN THE BACK OF THE ROOM WHO ARE FEMALE AND ARE IN LEADERSHIP POSITIONS.OBVIOUSLY WE HAVE A LOT TO BE PROUD OF AS AN INSTITUTION.
ONE OF THOSE THAT CHAIR BRAVO IS LEADING WALKING IN HER SHOES.
BUT THANK YOU TO TO ALL OF YOU IN THIS ROOM FOR ALL THAT YOU DO.
THEY ALSO MENTIONED THAT LAST WEEK WE HAD A CONVENING OUT AT OUR GARLAND CENTER AROUND IT WAS A WORK CONVENING TO LOOK AT THE OPPORTUNITIES MADE POSSIBLE BY THE CHIPS AND SCIENCE ACT THAT WAS PASSED LATE LAST YEAR.
WE'VE HAD A LONG STANDING RELATIONSHIP WITH TEXAS INSTRUMENTS, AND SO WE CONVENED THEM AND OTHERS IN THE THE SEMICONDUCTOR SPACE, ALONG WITH OTHER COLLEGES, ABOUT WAYS THAT WE CAN HELP SUPPORT THE NEED IN THIS REGION.
OBVIOUSLY TI IS MAKING A SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT INVESTMENT UP IN SHERMAN.
AND SO IT'S A BIG FOCUS FOR THE REGION ABOUT WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP SUPPORT THAT, TRAIN PEOPLE, GET PEOPLE INTO THOSE JOBS THAT ARE AVAILABLE NOW AND ARE GOING TO CONTINUE TO BE AVAILABLE.
BUT A SPECIAL THANKS TO TWO OF OUR VICE PROVOST, DR.
TRAN AND DR. KONNIKOVA, FOR HELPING PUT THAT TOGETHER, ALONG WITH OUR PROVOST, DR.
FLOYD, AND THE REST OF THE TEAM.
AND THEN FINALLY, I'LL JUST MENTION THAT AS WE CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD ON OUR PLANNING FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF OUR 2019 BOND INITIATIVE, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A SESSION TOMORROW, AN INFORMATION SESSION AROUND OUR BOND INITIATIVE, AROUND THE PHASES TO COME IN THIS.
AND SO WE HOPE THAT FOLKS THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY WILL WILL BE THERE.
BUT AGAIN, JUST TO KIND OF SHARE DETAILS AROUND ALL OF THIS, BECAUSE CERTAINLY WE WANT TO KEEP THE COMMUNITY AWARE OF WHAT WE'RE DOING AS WE MOVE INTO THESE NEXT PHASES, LARGELY AROUND OUR DOWNTOWN INITIATIVE.
AND THEN THE YOU SAY IT TOMORROW, WHAT TIME? IT'S AT 530.
AND THEN FINALLY, I'LL JUST SAY.
I SEE SOME PEOPLE APPLAUDING QUIETLY OVER THERE.
THAT I HOPE ALL OF YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO RECHARGE AND REFRESH AND TAKE A TAKE A BREAK AND COME BACK READY AND RENEWED BECAUSE THE THE YEAR IS GOING FAST.
THE SEMESTER IS GOING QUICKLY.
WE'LL HAVE GRADUATION CEREMONIES BEFORE WE KNOW IT.
BUT BUT WE WILL BE RELAXING NEXT WEEK.
SO AGAIN, I HOPE YOU ALL GET TIME TO ENJOY.
THANK YOU. ANY TRUSTEES HAVE A QUESTION?
[6.2. Announcements from the Board Chair and/or Trustees]
THE CHANCELLOR SAID ABOUT GRADUATION.SO THAT WILL BE COMING UP REAL SOON.
AND WE HAD SOME UPCOMING GRADUATES.
BUT I'VE NOTICED THAT THE GRADUATION CEREMONIES FOR THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS, IT SEEMS LIKE THE ADMINISTRATORS AND FACULTY IN THE PROCESSION ARE SMALLER IN NUMBERS.
THAT IS THERE A REASON WHY? BECAUSE BEFORE I MEAN, THEY THEY THEY FORMED A LONG PROCESSION AND IT WAS REALLY GOOD TO SEE THEM THERE AND SUPPORT AND THE CELEBRATION OF THE PRODUCT OF THEIR LABOR. SO WHAT'S GOING ON? YEAH. SO SO WE ARE MAKING CHANGES TO THAT.
AND SO IN, YOU KNOW, IN 2021, YOU KNOW, IN 2020 WE HAD VIRTUAL GRADUATION CEREMONY, 2021, WE WERE TRYING TO GET FOLKS TO COME BACK. AND SO THERE WEREN'T THAT MANY THAT FULLY PARTICIPATED.
[00:50:06]
GOTTEN THERE, OBVIOUSLY, IF IT WASN'T AS A RESULT OF OUR FACULTY THAT THAT HELPED SUPPORT THEM TO GET THERE.SO SO THIS YEAR MAY LOOK A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT.
NOW. THERE ARE SPACE LIMITATIONS AND OTHER THINGS THAT WE'RE TRYING TO WORK THROUGH.
BUT BUT THE TEAM IS WORKING ON THAT.
IS THERE AN OPTION WHERE FACULTY OR ADMINISTRATORS DON'T HAVE TO ATTEND? WELL, SO THERE ARE SPACE LIMITATIONS.
WE'RE ASKING FOR WE NEED 800 VOLUNTEERS TO HELP SUPPORT THIS WORK.
OUR OWN FOLKS, 800 OF THEM THAT WILL BE THERE, AND MANY OF THOSE FOLKS WILL BE BEHIND THE SCENES.
YOU WON'T NECESSARILY SEE THEM.
