WE DO HAVE A QUORUM PRESENT TODAY IN ACCORDANCE WITH CHAPTER FIVE FIVE, ONE OF THE TEXAS OPEN MEETINGS ACT.

[1. Roll Call - Announcement of Quorum]

I CALL TO ORDER THE REGULAR BOARD MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF DALLAS COLLEGE FOR MAY TEN, 2022 AT 4:45 P.M..

MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC WHO HAVE FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE DALLAS COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES WEBSITE FOR REGISTERING TO SPEAK DURING THE PUBLIC COMMENT PORTION WILL BE GIVEN 5 MINUTES TO SPEAK.

THIS BOARD MEETING IS BEING BROADCAST OVER THE INTERNET.

AN AUDIO RECORDING AND TRANSCRIPT OF THIS MEETING ARE BEING MADE AND WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC ON THE BOARD'S WEBSITE AFTER THE AFTER THE MEETING AT A LATER DATE. CHANCELLOR, CAN YOU PLEASE CONFIRM THIS MEETING HAS BEEN POSTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LAW?

[2. Certification of Notice Posted for the Meeting]

MADAM CHAIR, I CAN CERTIFY THAT THIS MEETING WAS POSTED ACCORDING TO SECTION 551.054 OF THE TEXAS GOVERNMENT CODE.

THANK YOU. TRUSTEE ZIMMERMAN, WOULD YOU PLEASE LEAD US IN THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE? I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.

HONOR THE TEXAS FLAG.

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO TEXAS.

ONE STATE, ONE INDIVISIBLE.

MM. OKAY.

WELL, MOVING ON TO ITEM FOUR, CITIZENS DESIRING TO ADDRESS THE BOARD.

[4. Citizens Desiring to Address the Board]

PERSONS WHO ADDRESS A BOARD ARE REMINDED THAT THE BOARD MAY NOT TAKE FORMAL ACTION ON MATTERS THAT ARE NOT PART OF THE MEETING AGENDA AND MAY NOT DISCUSS OR DELIBERATE ON ANY TOPIC THAT IS NOT SPECIFICALLY NAMED IN THE AGENDA THAT WAS POSTED 72 HOURS IN ADVANCE OF THE MEETING TODAY.

FOR ANY AGENDA TOPIC THAT IS INTRODUCED DURING THIS MEETING, THERE ARE ONLY THREE PERMISSIBLE RESPONSES TO PROVIDE A FACTUAL ANSWER TO A QUESTION.

TO CITE SPECIFIC BOARD OF TRUSTEES POLICY RELEVANT TO THE TOPIC, OR TO PLACE THE TOPIC ON THE AGENDA OF A SUBSEQUENT MEETING.

SPEAKERS SHALL DIRECT OUR PRESENTATIONS ONLY TO THE BOARD CHAIR OR THE BOARD AS A WHOLE, AND SHALL CONFINE THEIR COMMENTS TO THE AGENDA ITEM ABOUT WHICH THEY HAVE REQUESTED TO SPEAK TO THE BOARD. MAXIMUM TIME LIMIT FOR ALL COMMENTS IS 5 MINUTES.

THE BOARD RESERVES THE RIGHT TO LIMIT THE MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE TIME FOR PRESENTATION FOR ALL SPEAKERS ON THAT AGENDA ITEM AS MAY BE REASONABLY NECESSARY TO ACCOMMODATE ALL PERSONS WISHING TO ADDRESS THE BOARD.

I HAVE A COUPLE CITIZENS WHO HAVE SIGNED UP TO SPEAK, BUT I AM TOLD THAT THEY ARE THAT ONLY ONE PERSON IS HERE AND THAT WOULD BE EDWARD. SO BASED ON THE BEST OF THE BEST, YOU WOULD LIKE TO APPROACH THE PODIUM AND HAVE 5 MINUTES.

THE STREET HAS BEEN RENAMED BLOSSOM JEAN.

YET IF I GO IN FRONT OF THE BUILDING, IT'S STILL AS LAMAR AND THE CITY PUT A GREAT EFFORT INTO RENAMING IT.

IT WAS RENAMED WITH A GREAT CEREMONY.

YOU ARE AS EDUCATORS, MORAL LEADERS AND THEIR SOCIETY.

AND YOU ALSO SERVE THE DALLAS COUNTY OF STUDENT POPULATION, WHICH HAS A VERY HIGH MINORITY CONTENT.

I THINK IT'S OBLIGATORY FOR YOU TO MAKE A GOOD FAITH EFFORT TO GET THE BATHROOM GENE ADDRESS ON THIS BUILDING.

DEVONTE PETERS AND ALSO YOUR FAIL MADE INQUIRIES.

I FOUND THE REPLY FROM DALLAS COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO BE SOMEWHAT OBSCURE.

I THINK THAT WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND, HAVE A CONCRETE PLAN TO GET THE SIGNAGE HERE TO CONVERT IT TO BARTHELME JEAN TO BE FORMALLY ANNOUNCED WITH A TIMETABLE.

YOU ALSO SERVE AS A MORAL LEADER FOR THE REST OF THE COMMUNITY.

AND IF YOU GO UP AND DOWN THE MALL, I FOLLOWED DOCUMENTED THAT A GREAT MANY ADDRESSES HAVEN'T BEEN UPDATED.

SO I THINK IT WOULD DO VERY WELL FOR THE CITY IF YOU GUYS COULD GET MOVING AND ALSO POSE SOME TYPE OF COMMITMENT.

I HAD TO WRITE IN ABOUT THE FACT THAT THE WEBSITE WASN'T UPDATED AND ALSO YOU.

WHEN THE CITY OF DALLAS SENT OUT A LETTER ASKING FOR INPUT ON THE RENAMING, DALLAS COMMUNITY COLLEGE DID NOT RESPOND.

I THINK YOU GUYS NEED TO ENGAGE THIS ISSUE.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU, MR. SIESTA, FOR YOUR COMMENTS.

WE WILL NOW MOVE ON TO ITEM FIVE, SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS OF WHICH WE HAVE A FEW TODAY.

[5.1. Phi Theta Kappa Student Recognitions]

WE DO HAVE A FEW, SO IT'S THE END OF THE SEMESTER.

SO WE'VE GOT A LOT OF STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF THAT WE WANT TO RECOGNIZE TODAY.

STARTING WITH K FIVE.

THETA KAPPA IS AN INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION THAT ENGAGES HIGH ACHIEVING STUDENTS AND ENCOURAGES THEM TO BECOME LEADERS IN OUR COMMUNITY.

[00:05:06]

AND WE ALWAYS HAVE HAD WELL-ESTABLISHED TC CHAPTERS HERE AT DALLAS COLLEGE, AND THEY'RE ALWAYS COMPETITIVE BOTH AT THE STATE LEVEL AND THE INTERNATIONAL LEVEL AT THE INTERNATIONAL TC CATALYST CONVENTION THAT WAS RECENTLY HELD.

AND SO WE HAD SOME OF OUR LEADERSHIP THAT PARTICIPATED IN THAT.

AND SO I'LL ASK THAT DR.

FLACO AND DR.

WILLIAM WILLIAMS BOTH COME TO THE PODIUM AND SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR TC EFFORTS AND THEN INTRODUCE OUR STUDENTS AND THEIR ADVISORS THAT HAVE BEEN PART OF THIS. HAPPY TO DO THAT.

DO WE NEED TO LET THEM GO AHEAD AND COME IN SO Y'ALL CAN LOOK AT THEM? WELL, LET'S DO IT.

AND SO I'M GOING TO OPEN IT AND THEN DR.

WILLIAMS WILL CLOSE.

SO FIRST, I'LL START WHILE THEY'RE COMING IN TO TELL YOU HOW THEY ARE ELIGIBLE TO BE PART OF THIS GROUP.

THEY HAVE TO HAVE 12 HOURS OF COLLEGE CREDIT AND A 3.5 GPA.

ONE OF THE PRIMARY INCENTIVES FOR JOINING KAPPA IS ACCESS TO ABOUT $90 OF SCHOLARSHIP MONEY FROM THE TC FOUNDATION, FROM CORPORATE PARTNERS LIKE COCA-COLA AND CENGAGE, AND UNIVERSITY PARTNERS SEEKING TO ATTRACT GOOD STUDENTS TO TRANSFER.

BUT ONE OF THE THINGS YOU PROBABLY HAVEN'T HEARD ARE Y'ALL.

I'M SORRY. SHOULD I KEEP GOING? ONE OF THE THINGS YOU PROBABLY HAVEN'T HEARD IS WHY OUR DALLAS COLLEGE CHAPTERS ALWAYS DO SO WELL.

AND THEY ARE ONE OF THE MOST COMPETITIVE GROUPS OF CHAPTERS AT THEIR STATE LEVEL AND ALSO INTERNATIONALLY.

AND I SAY INTERNATIONALLY BECAUSE THERE ARE 11 NATIONS INCLUDED THAT HAVE CHAPTERS.

SO IT'S NOT JUST EVEN THE UNITED STATES.

SO THE COMPETITIONS RECOGNIZE EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH, IN WRITING AND PROBLEM SOLVING COMMUNITY AND CAMPUS ISSUES.

YOU'RE GOING TO HEAR REFERENCES TO AWARDS FOR THINGS LIKE COLLEGE PROJECT OR HONORS IN ACTION.

THESE INDICATE THAT THE CHAPTER DISTINGUISHES ITSELF BY PROBLEM SOLVING AROUND A VERY SPECIFIC COMMUNITY ISSUE OR A CAMPUS ISSUE.

THE OTHER THING, THERE ARE ALMOST 1300 CHAPTERS ACROSS THIS INTERNATIONAL LANDSCAPE, AND MOST OF THE AWARDS YOU'RE GOING TO HEAR ARE GIVEN TO THE TOP 50 OR FEWER CHAPTERS.

SO WHEN YOU HEAR THAT THEY WANT IT, THAT'S VERY SMALL GROUP.

SO IT'S A REALLY BIG DEAL AND IT ABSOLUTELY WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT ALL THE FACULTY, STAFF ADVISORS WHO SPEND TIME WITH THIS, DOING THAT RESEARCH AND THE WRITING AND THE PREPARATION.

SO I WOULD LIKE TO QUICKLY RECOGNIZE OUR DALLAS COLLEGE ADVISORS.

WE HAVE A LOT OF THEM TODAY.

CAN Y'ALL? AND THEN I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT, YOU KNOW, REBECCA BENAVIDES, SHE IS HAS OVERSIGHT OF ALL OF THE HONOR SOCIETIES AND OUR OTHER HONOR SOCIETIES FOR DALLAS COLLEGE.

SO IN HER NEW ROLE.

SO AT THIS TIME, I'M GOING TO BRING UP DR.

SHERI BOYD, WHO IS THE ADVISER OF THE ALPHA ZETA ZETA CHAPTER AT NORTHLAKE.

AND SHE'LL BE BRINGING UP THE STUDENTS AND YOU'LL GET TO HEAR FROM THEM AND ABOUT THEIR AWARDS.

THANK YOU. FIRST OF ALL, I'D LIKE TO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR INVITING US HERE TODAY. AND I LOVE WORKING WITH THESE STUDENTS.

AND I'D LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THE SUPPORT THAT YOU GIVE TO OUR THETA KAPPA STUDENTS, BECAUSE WE WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO DO WHAT WE DO WITHOUT YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT THAT YOU GIVE TO OUR PHI BETA KAPPA STUDENTS.

SO FIRST, I WOULD LIKE TO BRING UP THE BROOKHAVEN STUDENT CHAPTER PRESIDENT AND HAVE HER SPEAK TO YOU.

HI, EVERYONE. MY NAME IS AISHA, AND I'M THE PRESIDENT OF THE BROOKHAVEN CHAPTER OF KAPPA ALPHA DATA PI.

WHEN I THINK ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE WI FI KAPPA, I THINK ABOUT THE PEOPLE.

WHEN I JOINED, I KNEW IT WAS A GREAT ORGANIZATION WITH AMAZING STUDENTS, SMART AND BUT I COULDN'T IMAGINE HOW THE BENEFIT AND HOW AMAZING PEOPLE ARE WHOSE MET I WOULD MEET.

AND SO WITH THE HELP OF OUR ADVISORS, IT REALLY HELPED US TO GO BEYOND OUR ABILITIES OR WHAT WE THOUGHT WE WOULD BE CAPABLE OF.

WE'VE DONE A PROJECT ON SUSTAINABILITY AND WE WORK WITH THE SUSTAINABILITY DEPARTMENT AT BROOKHAVEN AND WE DID A STORY MAP, SOMETHING WE WE HAVEN'T HEARD ABOUT.

[00:10:01]

AND WE WERE ABLE TO CREATE A MAP OF THE BROOKHAVEN CAMPUS AND HOW SUSTAINABILITY POINTS THAT STUDENT CAN USE AND DO OTHER PROJECTS ON.

AND THAT'S SOMETHING WE WILL NEVER THOUGHT TO BE CAPABLE OF.

SO THANKS TO BTCC AND OUR ADVISOR, WE WERE ALSO ABLE TO HAVE SOME GREAT AWARDS.

FOR EXAMPLE, I WAS NOMINATED AS A DISTINGUISHED CHAPTER OFFICER AT THE STATE LEVEL AND ALSO ONE OF OUR MEMBERS, TANYA.

SHE GOT THE DISTINGUISHED CHAPTER MEMBER AWARD AND WE ALSO HAVE A COCA-COLA SCHOLARSHIP WINNER IN OUR TEAM.

AND ALSO WE GOT OUR DISTINGUISHED ADVISORY TEAM ON THE AWARD, SOMETHING WE ARE REALLY GRATEFUL FOR.

AND THANKS TO TC, I WAS ABLE TO APPLY TO UNIVERSITIES.

NEVER THINK I'LL BE ABLE TO BE ADMITTED IN AND WITHOUT THEIR SUPPORT.

I DON'T THINK I'LL BE HERE TODAY.

I GOT SOME LEADERSHIP SKILLS, PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS AND ALL OF THAT.

IT WAS BECAUSE OF OUR ADVISOR.

SO I REALLY WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO ALL OF THEM BECAUSE WITHOUT THEM, WE WILL NOT BE STANDING HERE TODAY.

THANK YOU. OH, AND THEY WANT ME TO MENTION THAT I JUST GOT ADMITTED TO PRINCETON UNIVERSITY TODAY.

WOW. THANK YOU.

DR. TOMMY THOMPSON IS GOING TO SPEAK FOR CEDAR VALLEY.

HE'S GOING TO READ A STATEMENT FROM ONE OF OUR STUDENT OFFICERS.

THEY HAD TO WORK. THEY COULDN'T BE HERE TODAY.

CHAIR BRAVO TRUSTEES.

CHANCELLOR LONDON.

I GUESS I'M IMPERSONATING A STUDENT TODAY.

HIS NAME IS QUINCY SMITH, AND HE IS A MARVEL.

HE IS WORKING TODAY AND HE IS A DESIGN AND GRAPHICS STUDENT WHO WILL FINISH THE VALLEY THIS YEAR AND GO ON ON A SCHOLARSHIP TO UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT ARLINGTON.

TC CATALYST 2022, INSPIRED ME TO FOCUS ON ETHICAL SKILLS REGARDING LEADERSHIP, RESPONSIBILITY AND TEAMWORK.

CATALYST ACTIVITIES WERE NOT ONLY MOTIVATIONAL BUT STRESSED THE IMPORTANCE OF CONNECTIONS AND COMMUNICATION AMONG LEADERS FOR VARIOUS STATES AND COUNTRIES.

WHAT WAS UNIQUE ABOUT ATTENDING TC CATALYSTS WAS THAT I WAS ABLE TO LEARN FROM DIVERSE LEADERS THROUGH EDUCATIONAL FORUMS AND GENERAL SESSIONS.

SOME THINGS THAT I LEARNED WERE THE VARIOUS LESSONS OVER THE HONOR'S STUDY TOPIC THE ART OF PLAY.

I LEARNED THE ACTS OF PLAY AND HOW TO BUILD AN HONORS AND ACTION PROJECT THAT CAN NOT ONLY HELP MY COMMUNITY, BUT BUILD A TEAM AND UNITE OUR CHAPTER WHILE HAVING FUN LEARNING AND STRENGTHENING RELATIONSHIPS.

MY FUTURE EXPERIENCES WHILE BEING PART OF PHI BETA KAPPA WILL PROPEL A LEADER READY TO TEACH OTHERS AND ENSURE ORGANIZATIONAL SUCCESS WHILE FOSTERING MANY SCHOLARLY FRIENDSHIPS.

DURING THIS YEAR, I WILL UTILIZE MY SKILLS AS PRESIDENT TO HELP TEACH, FORM AND UNITE COMMUNITIES USING LEADERSHIP SKILLS TO BUILD AN ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE.

THIS YEAR'S PRESIDENT WILL BE BOTH A LEARNING AND ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE WHEN COLLABORATING, ALTHOUGH SOMETIMES MANY CHALLENGES EXIST, SUCH AS JOB AND WORK RESPONSIBILITIES, OFFICER SCHEDULES AND FAMILY COMMITMENTS, I BELIEVE THAT OUR CHAPTER CAN STEP UP AND ACHIEVE MANY GOALS.

I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO TAKING THE MANTLE AS CHAPTER PRESIDENT, REALIZING THIS POSITION WILL BE SOMETHING TO REFLECT ON AS A VALUABLE, REWARDING EXPERIENCE.

THANK YOU TO THE DALLAS COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES.

MANY OF OUR OFFICERS ARE LEAVING US THIS YEAR.

THEY'RE GRADUATING, SO THEY'LL HOPE TO SEE MANY OF YOU AT GRADUATION.

OUR NEXT PERSON IS FROM NORTH LAKE.

CHAPTER PRESIDENT RANDY MERRILL.

SORRY. RIGHT. SORRY.

HAVE A LITTLE MOMENT WITH THE ORDER.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING US.

MY NAME IS BRANDY MERRELL, AND I AM THE CHAPTER BUZZ.

THE CHAPTER PRESIDENT AM NO LONGER AT NORTH LAKE.

[00:15:03]

AND THIS YEAR, WHEN WE STEPPED INTO THE ROLE I WAS RETURNING.

I HAD STARTED SCHOOL BACK IN 2006 AND MY CHAPTER ADVISOR WAS ACTUALLY OUR CHAPTER PRESIDENT AT THE TIME.

AND SO WE HAVE A VERY INTERESTING RELATIONSHIP ALL YEAR LONG, BUT THIS YEAR WE REALLY HAVE THE GOAL BECAUSE NORTH LAKE, AS SOME OF YOU KNOW, HAS HAD A VERY CHALLENGING COUPLE OF YEARS COMING BACK FROM SOME OBSTACLES.

AND WE MY VICE PRESIDENT OF SCHOLARSHIP, NICOLE AND I, AS MANY OF YOU KNOW, HER SET ONE GOAL AND IT WAS TO REESTABLISH OUR CHAPTER AS A FIVE STAR CHAPTER. AND INSTEAD WE ENDED UP WINNING MANY AWARDS AT THE REGIONAL LEVEL FOR TEXAS AND EVEN WON TWO INTERNATIONAL AWARDS FOR HONORS IN ACTION AND FOR DISTINGUISHED CHAPTER, WHICH IS ONE OF THE TOP 30 CHAPTERS IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.

SO WE WERE VERY, VERY EXCITED.

AND I'M VERY EXCITED THAT THE LEGACY OF NORTH LAKE AND OF ALPHA ZETA ADA TO THE REST OF THE STUDENTS WHO ARE COMING BEHIND US.

AND ONE MORE THING.

THIS IS THE ENTIRE OFFICER TEAM FROM LAST YEAR, NICOLE AND MACKENZIE AND MYSELF.

AND I WILL SAY WITH RORY, WHO IS OUR STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT, WE HAVE BECOME A FAMILY AND THAT IS IRREPLACEABLE.

THANK YOU. I WOULD NOW LIKE TO INTRODUCE THE CHAPTER PRESIDENT FROM EL CENTRO COLLEGE, FATIMA RICARDO.

WELL, A BOARD OF TRUSTEES. HELLO, EVERYBODY.

MY NAME IS FATIMA AND I AM PRESIDENT OF SIGMA TAU CHAPTER.

FIRST OF ALL, I WANT TO THANK MY ADVISORS.

THEY ARE THE BEST PEOPLE THAT I'VE EVER COME ACROSS TO.

THERE'S STILL SOME MISSING, BUT KUDOS TO THEM.

I WANT TO THANK ALL THE MEMBERS IN OUR HUMBLE LITTLE CHAPTER.

SOME OF THE OTHER OFFICERS COULDN'T BE HERE, BUT THEY ARE STILL ACKNOWLEDGED.

I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY AND MY EXPERIENCE HERE IN TCA HAS BEEN A VERY DIFFERENT.

I DON'T KNOW. I GOT TO EXPERIENCE FRIENDSHIP.

I GOT TO EXPERIENCE MEETING NEW PEOPLE.

AND I ALSO GOT TO HEAR A LOT OF MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS WHO WENT TO CATALYST AND TEXAS REGION AS WELL.

WE GOT TO SEE DIFFERENT COLLEGES AND WE REALLY JUST HAD A GREAT TIME AND WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY.

THANK YOU. MOUNTAIN VIEW CHAPTER PRESIDENT GRACIELA OLVERA.

I'M GRACE SILVEIRA, PRESIDENT OF THE OMEGA OMEGA CHAPTER FROM MOUNTAIN VIEW.

THIS WAS A YEAR OF REBUILDING FROM THE PANDEMIC FOR OUR CHAPTER.

WE STARTED WITH NO OFFICERS OR NO ACTIVE MEMBERS IN FALL 2021.

OUR ADVISORS WORKED HARD DURING SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER TO ORGANIZED ORIENTATIONS, MEETINGS AND OUR COLLEGE PROJECT.

BY THE END OF OCTOBER, WE HAD THREE ACTIVE MEMBERS THAT HELPED COMPLETE THE COLLEGE PROJECT.

WE ARE EXTREMELY PROUD OF THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS ACHIEVED BY OUR CHAPTER DURING THIS SHORT TIME OF REBUILDING.

THESE ACTIVE MEMBERS BECAME OFFICERS FOR THE CHAPTER BEGINNING IN JANUARY 2022.

I USED TO BELIEVE I COULDN'T FINISH COLLEGE THANKS TO PI THETA KAPPA.

MY CONFIDENCE IN MY STUDIES HAVE GROWN TREMENDOUSLY.

IN TWO DAYS, I GRADUATE WITH MY ASSOCIATES AND IN FALL I WILL TRANSFER TO A FOUR YEAR UNIVERSITY.

I THANK GOD FOR GIVING ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO JOIN SUCH AN AMAZING CLUB.

THANK YOU. SO RICH IN COLLEGE.

THE CHAPTER PRESIDENT, ORLANDO SILVA.

HELLO, EVERYONE. MY NAME IS.

I AM THE DALLAS COLLEGE JERUSALEM CAMPUS ALPHA AVICI CHAPTER PRESIDENT.

P TC IS VERY SPECIAL TO ME BECAUSE HONESTLY I WAS DEDICATED TO MY STUDIES AND I ALWAYS UNDERSTOOD, HEY, YOU KNOW, GRADES ARE IMPORTANT, BUT I ALWAYS FELT LIKE THERE WAS SOMETHING MISSING AND I FELT LIKE STAYING AWAY HAS SORT OF HELPED ME FIND WHAT WAS MISSING, AND THAT IS HELPING OTHERS AND ALSO FINDING QUALITIES IN MYSELF THAT I CAN IMPROVE ON AND ALSO HELPING OTHERS FIND THE SAME THING.

IT'S KIND OF CRAZY BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE MANY FRIENDS AT RICHLAND CAMPUS, BUT AFTER JOINING TC, LITERALLY ALL OF THE OFFICERS BECAME SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS.

[00:20:02]

AND THIS CAME FROM WHAT, JUST JOINING ONE ORGANIZATION AND THIS FOLLOWING ALONG WITH THIS, A LOT OF THE PEOPLE THAT I MET, I'VE CREATED GREAT RELATIONSHIPS WITH, I'VE BONDED WITH, AND WE'VE ACTUALLY ACCOMPLISHED SO MUCH.

WE'VE GOT TO DO A COLLEGE PROJECT ON AN ACTION IN WHICH WE WERE ABLE TO ACTUALLY MENTOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS.

WE WERE ACTUALLY ABLE TO DO CAREER PATHWAY AT OUR CAMPUS, AND WE WENT ON TO WIN DIFFERENT AWARDS.

WE WON OUR TEXAS REGIONAL MOST DISTINGUISHED COLLEGE PROJECT.

WE WON TOP TEXAS CHAPTER AND DISTINGUISHED ALL INTERNATIONALLY AS WELL.

SO IN GENERAL, I THINK TC JUST PROVIDES THAT EXTRA ACTUAL QUALITY THAT DIFFERENT STUDENTS SEEK A PURPOSE, SOMETHING THAT I FEEL LIKE MOST OTHER MOST PEOPLE LOOK FOR BUT CAN'T FIND SIMPLY ANYWHERE.

I THINK TC IS SPECIAL FOR THAT REASON.

THANK YOU. SO.

NO. YEAH.

NO, THANK YOU. YEAH. THANK YOU.

THAT'S TOUGH TO FOLLOW WHEN YOU HEAR THAT SOMEONE'S BEEN ACCEPTED INTO AN IVY LEAGUE SCHOOL AND THE FACT THAT THEIR LIFE GO.

CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, IS A NEUROSURGEON OR IF YOU YOU HAVE OTHER STUDENTS WHO WHERE YOU ARMY OR MARINE OR MARINE MARINE CORPS OR THOSE TYPES OF STORIES. THERE'S NO DATA POINT THAT CAPTURES WHERE PEOPLE COME FROM.

RIGHT. AND WHEN WE LOOK AT HOW LIFE WEAVES ITS WAY THROUGH THE MAGIC WE DO HERE AT DALLAS COLLEGE, AND SO WHEN YOU LOOK AT FACULTY AND STAFF ADVISORS TO THE TC PROGRAM, THESE ARE DREAM BROKERS, RIGHT? AND WE ALL NEEDED SOMEBODY TO PULL US THROUGH, BUT ALSO PUSH US THROUGH SOMETIMES.

AND THAT'S YOU'LL SEE HANDPRINTS ON THE BACKS OF MOST OF THESE STUDENTS HERE, BECAUSE WHEN THEY DIDN'T BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES, YOU HAD FACULTY AND STAFF SAYING, YES, YOU CAN DO THIS. AND THAT'S WHY.

TC AND THIS ORGANIZATION IS INCREDIBLE.

ONE THING YOU CAN'T OVERLOOK, THOUGH, IS THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE STUDENTS WHO HAD TO HAVE SOMEONE READ THEIR STATEMENT TO YOU TODAY BECAUSE THEY WERE AT WORK AS BIG AS THIS IS.

AND YOU TALK TO ANY ONE OF THESE STUDENTS WHO WHO WHO MADE EVERY CHANGE THEY COULD TO BE HERE TODAY.

SOME COULDN'T WRITE.

AND THAT'S THE TYPE OF STUDENT THAT WE SERVE HERE AT DALLAS COLLEGE.

AND NEVER FORGET THAT, BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT WE DO.

THAT'S A STUDENT WE SERVE.

AND THESE PEOPLE HERE WILL CHANGE THE WORLD AND WE WILL BE PART OF THAT SUCCESS STORY.

SO THANK YOU ALL. BEFORE WE TAKE A PICTURE, I THINK THERE WAS A COUPLE OF TRUSTEES WHO WANTED TO MAKE COMMENTS.

KRISTI FLORES, CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL Y'ALL.

I WAS INDUCTED INTO THE SIGMA METAL CHAPTER OF BTCC AND BACK IN 9394, HOWARD FINNEY WAS THE ADVISOR.

AND SO THAT'S WHY AT EACH GRADUATION CEREMONY THAT WHERE I REPRESENT THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, I WEAR MY STOLE IN CASE SOME OF YOU ARE WONDERING AND ARE GOING TO BE IN THE GRADUATION CEREMONY THAT I, TOGETHER WITH TRUSTEE BOYD, WILL BE REPRESENTING THE BOARD.

BUT SO PROUD OF Y'ALL.

SO PROUD OF YOU.

ANY OTHER TRUSTEES? NOT CONGRATULATIONS.

WE LOVE HEARING YOUR SUCCESS STORIES, AND I KNOW WE'RE PROUD TO JUST PLAY A SMALL PART IN WHAT I KNOW.

Y'ALL WILL HAVE SUCCESSFUL LIVES AFTER THIS.

WITH THAT, JOIN US FOR A PICTURE.

AND WHILE YOU'RE COMING UP, LET ME JUST SAY TO THE BOARD AND EVERYONE HERE, SO MANY OF THE FOLKS AROUND THIS ROOM, THE FACULTY AND THE STAFF THAT HAVE BEEN PART OF TC FOR YEARS AND YEARS, THEY ARE PASSIONATE ADVOCATES FOR THESE STUDENTS AND FOR TC.

SO, I MEAN, SHERRI AND TOMMY AND REBECCA AND MARIA AND SO MANY OTHERS THAT HAVE BEEN ENGAGED AND SUPPORTED SO MANY STUDENTS.

I REALLY DO APPRECIATE EVERYTHING YOU ALL DO AND HAVE DONE TO SUPPORT THESE AMAZING INDIVIDUALS THAT COME ON UP AND.

LET'S GET A PICTURE. YOU WANT TO SEE THINGS? SO YOU SEE THEM, RIGHT? RIGHT. THAT'S EXACTLY RIGHT. THANK YOU.

IT'S BEEN GREAT TO SEE YOU.

DAD WAS LIKE, WAIT A MINUTE.

THANK YOU. THAT'S FANTASTIC.

I'VE BEEN WORKING A LITTLE BIT MORE

[00:25:07]

FOR YOU. IS THIS YOUR FATHER OR SOMETHING? IT'S GOOD TO HAVE A BACKUP.

IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO HAVE A BACKUP.

YEAH. OH, WOW.

THAT LOOKS GOOD. LOOK AT YOURSELVES.

WOW. THAT'S GREAT.

ARE NOT IN A VERY, VERY.

I KNOW.

OH, GOODNESS.

I HOPE IT'S NOT ONE. SHE'S NOT GOING ANYWHERE.

KNOW SHE HAS TO HAVE MORE PLACES.

IT'S SO COLD THERE. OH, HERE IT IS.

LOOK AT THIS. YES, I KNOW.

WE'RE TRYING TO FIND THAT HERE.

LIKE I'M SITTING ON THE FLOOR.

I GOT OUT NEARLY Ā£20 WHEN YOU LOVE THAT.

GOOD FOR YOU. IT'S USUALLY BY BECOMING SELF-SUSTAINING.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE.

[5.2. Texas Intercollegiate Press Association Awards: Dallas College Student Media Participants]

SO AS WE CONTINUE GOING AND HAVE THE STUDENTS COME IN AND AND THE FACULTY TO SUPPORT THE OUR JOURNALISM PROGRAM, OUR STUDENT MEDIA PROGRAM, THAT WE ARE VERY PROUD OF, OUR STUDENT JOURNALISTS AND THE WORK THEY DO.

MANY OF US HAVE ENGAGED WITH THEM ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIC, AND THEY'RE SERIOUS ABOUT WHAT THEY DO THERE.

THEY'RE JUST AMAZING PROFESSIONALS AND WE'RE SO PROUD OF THEM.

AND EVERY YEAR THEY GO TO SHOWCASE THEIR WORK AGAINST OTHERS AT THE TEXAS INTERCOLLEGIATE PRESS ASSOCIATION CONVENTION, AND THEY ALWAYS BRING BACK A BUNCH OF ACCOLADES. AND THIS YEAR IS NO DIFFERENT.

IN FACT, THEY BROUGHT HOME MORE THAN 100 AWARDS THIS YEAR.

SO I'D LIKE TO ASK DR.

EDDIE TAYLOR TO COME UP AND INTRODUCE SOME FOLKS AND SHARE A LITTLE BIT OF DETAIL.

THANK YOU, CHANCELLOR. TRUSTEE, CHAIR BRAVO.

MEMBERS OF THE BOARD.

WE DON'T DO THIS WORK ALONE.

SO I SAY I'D LIKE TO RECOGNIZE THE OTHER PRESIDENTS AND CAMPUSES THAT ARE PART OF THIS.

AND THAT'S PRESIDENT BRADDY, OF COURSE, FROM OUR BROOKHAVEN CAMPUS.

PRESIDENTS LIKE FROM OUR NORTH LAKE CAMPUS AND PRESIDENT EGGLESTON FROM OUR RICHLAND CAMPUS.

SO AS CHANCELLOR, ONE INVENTION, OUR STUDENTS, WE HAD 15 STUDENTS THAT WERE ABLE TO GO FROM OUR FOUR CAMPUSES TO THE TEXAS INTERCOLLEGIATE PRESS ASSOCIATION, BETTER KNOWN AS TIPA, AND IT IS THE OLDEST PRESS ASSOCIATION IN THE NATION.

SO I THINK THAT ALONE TELLS YOU THIS GREAT WORK THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE DOING.

SO THIS ALSO WAS THE FIRST FACE TO FACE CONFERENCE SINCE 2019.

SO A LOT OF OUR STUDENTS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS CONFERENCE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FACE TO FACE SETTING.

SO AS OUR CHANCELLOR MENTIONED, WE HAD OVER 104 WORDS, BUT THERE WERE 800 GIVEN OUT.

SO WE ARE REALLY PROUD OF OUR STUDENTS FOR THEIR WORK.

BUT NONE OF THIS WORK CAN BE DONE WITHOUT THE ADVISORS AND FACULTY, AS WAS MENTIONED.

AND SO IT IS MY PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE TO YOU THE STUDENT ADVISOR, PROFESSOR DANIEL RODNEY, WHO HAS WORKED REALLY HARD, AND HE'S GOING TO COME AND SHARE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE CONFERENCE AS WELL AS THE AWARDS THAT WERE GIVEN.

YOU MAY. I JUST WANTED TO KNOW HOW MANY COLLEGES PARTICIPATED.

IT WAS ABOUT 37 OR 38, I BELIEVE.

IS THAT RIGHT? DOWN FROM USUALLY 47 TO 50, OF COURSE, BECAUSE WE'RE IN A TIE AND EVERYTHING HE DOES, EVERY TIME HE COMES TO CAMPUS, I DRESS DOWN, I JOKE WITH MY WIFE ABOUT IT.

IT'S IT'S A RUNNING JOKE NOW.

SO. CHANCELLOR LONDON TRUSTEES, THANK YOU ALL FOR INVITING US HERE TODAY TO HONOR OUR STUDENTS.

[00:30:03]

THEY'RE SO TALENTED. AND THE COURIER QUOTED ME IN A STORY ABOUT PIPPA, AND THEY QUOTED ME SAYING, FEW THINGS ARE MORE AFFIRMING THAN RECOGNITION FOR HARD WORK IN SUCH A COMPETITIVE SETTING. AND I FELT LIKE THAT WAS THEY QUOTED ME WITH IT AND READ IT LATER.

I WAS LIKE, THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT.

WHICH JUST SAID THIS WAS THE FIRST CONVENTION BACK ON SITE SINCE 2019.

THE TEXAS INTERCOLLEGIATE PRESS ASSOCIATION WAS HELD HERE IN FORT WORTH, FOUNDED, AS YOU SAID, 1909.

TIPP IS THE OLDEST COLLEGIATE PRESS ASSOCIATION IN THE NATION.

IT'S GROWN TO ONE OF THE LARGEST AND MOST RESPECTED COLLEGIATE GROUPS IN THE COUNTRY.

A FEW FORMER STUDENT JOURNALISTS INCLUDE WALTER CRONKITE, DAN RATHER, GLORIA CAMPOS, AND FORMER PRESIDENT LYNDON JOHNSON, TO NAME A FEW JUST SOME PEOPLE WE MIGHT HAVE HEARD OF RIGHT OVER THE THREE DAY CONVENTION, OUR STUDENTS FROM TWO YEAR COMPETED AGAINST OTHER TWO YEARS AND FOUR YEAR SCHOOLS FROM ACROSS TEXAS.

AGAIN, IT WAS ABOUT 37 OR 38 COLLEGES TAKING PART.

THEY TOOK PART IN THESE ONSITE COMPETITIONS.

THEY GOT TO ATTEND SESSIONS AND WORKSHOPS LED BY LOCAL AND REGIONAL MEDIA PROFESSIONALS, SOME FROM HERE IN DALLAS, FORT WORTH, ALL AROUND NORTH TEXAS.

THEY WERE ALSO GIVEN THE CHANCE TO NETWORK WITH POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS DURING A CAREER FAIR AND INTERNSHIP.

FAIR AND COMMUNITY IMPACT WAS VERY INTO OUR DALLAS COLLEGE STUDENTS.

THEY SAID THEY'VE HAD SEVERAL THERE AND LOVE THEM, SO THEY WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO MEETING MORE.

I'M KIND OF REPEATING A LITTLE BIT NOW, BUT DALLAS COLLEGE STUDENT MEDIA BROUGHT HOME 104 AWARDS IN TOTAL, 104 IN TOTAL, WITH SIX OF THOSE BEING THE LIVE COMPETITIONS LIVE CONTEST.

AND AGAIN, THOSE LIVE CONTESTS ARE WHERE OUR STUDENTS WERE PITTED AGAINST, IN SOME CASES, BAYLOR, U.A., UTA AND ALL THE HAY-ADAMS SORRY, ALL OF THEM, OUR STUDENTS.

THESE AWARDS, YOU KNOW, THEY GET TO PUT THESE ON THEIR RESUMES AND THEIR JOB APPLICATIONS AND THESE ARE AWARDS TIPS WHEN THAT POPS UP.

EDITOR'S BEEN AROUND SINCE 1909.

EDITORS, MANAGING EDITORS, HIRING EDITORS ALL ACROSS THE STATE.

THEY KNOW THOSE TYPE OF AWARDS.

SO WHEN WE HAVE STUDENTS GET THEM, IT'S IT'S REALLY ENCOURAGING FOR FOR US AND FOR THEM.

NOW I'M GOING TO INTRODUCE VERY QUICKLY I DIDN'T SAY IT, BUT I AM DANIEL RODRIGUE FROM BROOKHAVEN.

I STARTED AS A AS A STUDENT AT BROOKHAVEN ON THE COURIER, SO I WAS AN UNPAID COPY EDITOR.

THAT'S HOW I GOT STARTED IS LLOYD DAN, THE FACULTY ADVISOR AT EASTFIELD.

AND THEN THERE IS ERIKA EDWARDS, A FACULTY ADVISOR AT RICHLAND.

JUAN BETANCOURT IS THE PART TIME ADVISOR AT NORTHLAKE.

HE COULD NOT BE HERE. AND THEN I HAVE TO INTRODUCE JUVENILE AGUILAR.

HE IS FULL TIME NOW SPLIT BETWEEN RICHLAND AND BROOKHAVEN, BUT HE'S ALSO HELPING ALL OF US WITH THINGS LIKE TYPE OF PAPERWORK.

AND THEN I AM SUPPOSED TO INTRODUCE PRESIDENT EGGLESTON.

I HAVE A QUESTION.

SO HOW MANY FACULTY MEMBERS DO WE HAVE IN JOURNALISM FULL TIME? THIS IS IT. SO YOU CALLED A FACULTY ADVISOR, BUT YOU'RE ALSO YOU'RE AN ADVISOR, BUT YOU'RE FACULTY.

PREVIOUSLY WE WERE MOSTLY FACULTY AND A LITTLE BIT OF ADVISING.

NOW WE DON'T HAVE ADVISORS AND STAFF ANYMORE, SO WE'RE.

OKAY. THANK YOU.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

THANK YOU. DANIEL CHANCELLOR LEINEN, CHAIR BRAVO AND TRUSTEES.

I HAVE THE DISTINCT PLEASURE OF INTRODUCING OUR STUDENTS, BUT I WANT TO ALSO SAY THAT THIS IS A MIGHTY TEAM OF FACULTY ADVISORS. THEY WORK TIRELESSLY.

SO WE ONLY SAW THREE.

I MEAN, THESE INDIVIDUALS GIVE THEIR HEART AND SOUL.

SO I WANT TO GIVE EXTRA RECOGNITION TO OUR FACULTY ADVISORS.

YEAH. AND OF COURSE, WE COULD NOT BE PROUDER OF OUR STUDENTS.

AND SO I WOULD LIKE TO ASK EACH OF THEM TO COME AND SAY A FEW WORDS.

REPRESENTING BROOKHAVEN CAMPUS, ROSA PETOSKEY.

IF YOU'D PLEASE COME FORWARD.

THANK YOU. HI.

MY NAME IS ROSA PETOSKEY, AND I'M THE EDITOR IN CHIEF AT THE BROOKHAVEN COURIER.

SO MUCH LIKE DANIEL, I STARTED OUT AS AN UNPAID COPY EDITOR AND ACTUALLY I STARTED OUT AT BROOKHAVEN JUST TAKING HIS PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS.

I WANTED TO HONE MY SKILLS AND HE JUST REALLY ENCOURAGED ME TO CONTRIBUTE, YOU KNOW, TO JUST BE A PART OF IT AND TO LEARN A LITTLE BIT MORE.

AND, YOU KNOW, FOR ME, HONESTLY, IT HAS ACTUALLY HELPED MY PHOTOGRAPHY BUSINESS TO BE ABLE TO CREATE BETTER DELIVERABLES FOR MY CLIENTS FROM FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY ALL THE WAY UP TO CORPORATE CLIENTS LIKE CARTER BLOOD CARE.

SO IT HAS PROVIDED A REALLY GREAT WORK READY ENVIRONMENT AND A HANDS ON ENVIRONMENT FOR US.

AND THEN ON THE PAPER SIDE, IT ACTUALLY HAS PROVIDED NEW JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR ME BECAUSE I'VE HONED IN ON MY AP STYLE WRITING AND HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MANAGE SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS FOR OTHER COMPANIES.

[00:35:01]

SO IT'S A REALLY GREAT COMMUNAL LEARNING.

WE HAVE EACH OTHER'S BACK, WE LEARN HOW TO HELP EACH OTHER AND KIND OF SHARPEN EACH OTHER SKILLS.

AND I'VE I'M NOWHERE WITHOUT OUR ADVISORS, THE TEAM OF STAFF THAT LOOK AT MY COPY AND MAKE SURE THAT IT'S IN GOOD SHAPE AND READY TO BE PRODUCED.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS TIME.

THANK YOU, ROSA.

AND FROM EASTFIELD CAMPUS, HARRIET RAMOS.

WELL, GOOD AFTERNOON.

IT'S A PRIVILEGE TO BE HERE TODAY.

I KNOW OFTEN I'VE SEEN VIRTUAL BOARD MEETINGS BEFORE AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I'VE BEEN IN THE ROOM.

SO IT'S A SMALLER, SMALLER SPACE THAN I'D IMAGINED.

BUT IT'S A PRIVILEGE TO BE HERE TODAY.

AND AGAIN, MY NAME IS HARRIET RAMOS AND I'M THE CURRENT EDITOR IN CHIEF OF THE ETC.

EAST FIELD STUDENT MEDIA ORGANIZATION.

AND I'M A NONTRADITIONAL STUDENT.

I CAME TO DALLAS COLLEGE FOUR YEARS AGO TO GET AN ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE WITH A PATHWAY TO JOURNALISM TO FULFILL MY LIFELONG DREAM OF BEING A WRITER.

AND SO, THANKS TO THE TOOLS I'VE BEEN GIVEN AT DALLAS COLLEGE, I CAN SEE THAT THAT INSIGHT THAT'S GOING TO BECOME A REALITY.

NOW, I'VE TAKEN A LOT OF GOOD CLASSES AT DALLAS COLLEGE, GREAT PROFESSORS.

BUT WHAT HAS HELPED ME MORE THAN ANYTHING, BAR NONE, IS STUDENT MEDIA.

I WASN'T JUST SITTING IN A CLASSROOM LEARNING ABOUT HOW TO WRITE LEADS AND INTERVIEW AND STORY STRUCTURE.

I WAS OUT ON CAMPUS PRACTICING THAT DAY AFTER DAY AFTER DAY, PRODUCING CONTENT, AND SO IT'S JUST NOTHING LIKE SEEING YOUR NAME IN PRINT FOR THE FIRST TIME.

IT'S JUST IT'S AND JUST THOSE MOTIVATIONS JUST IS WHAT, WHAT KEEPS YOU, WHAT KEEPS YOU GOING AND ALL THAT HANDS ON EXPERIENCE THAT THE ADVISORS GAVE US LOOKING OVER OUR SHOULDER SAYING, YOU KNOW, CORRECT THIS, FIX THIS, THAT JUST POINTED ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

AND SO LATER, AFTER WORKING FOR ABOUT A YEAR FOR FREE, I WAS ABLE TO MOVE INTO THE POSITION OF EDITOR IN CHIEF.

AND THAT'S BEEN NEW CHALLENGES, NEW RESPONSIBILITIES, BUT AGAIN, MORE HANDS ON EXPERIENCE ON HOW TO BE A JOURNALIST IN THE REAL WORLD.

AND SO A FEW WEEKS AGO, I WAS ABLE TO GET HIRED AS A FREELANCE WRITER WITH THE COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER IN MY EDITOR, AH, IN MY, IN MY AREA.

AND SO I GOT MY FIRST STORY PUBLISHED.

AND THEN THIS SUMMER I'VE BEEN ABLE TO GET AN INTERNSHIP WITH THE FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM AS A REPORTER.

SO AGAIN, I'M EXCITED DOORS HAVE OPENED FOR ME AND NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE WITHOUT STUDENT MEDIA EXPERIENCE AT DALLAS COLLEGE.

AND UNFORTUNATELY, OUR ADVISOR THAT WE HAD WAS OUR FULL TIME ADVISOR WAS LAID OFF IN FALL BECAUSE DURING THE REORGANIZATION AND WE STILL HAVE OUR FACULTY ADVISOR, BUT AND WE HAVE A PART TIME ADVISOR, WE'RE THANKFUL FOR THEM, BUT REALLY TO PREPARE STUDENTS THE WAY THEY NEED TO BE PREPARED, THEY REALLY NEED TO BE A FULL TIME ADVISOR IN EVERY, EVERY NEWSROOM.

THAT'S JUST WHAT'S GIVEN US THE BEST EXPERIENCE.

WE CAN GO OUT, WE CAN WIN AWARDS, WE CAN HAVE TALENT.

BUT IF WE DON'T HAVE SOMEONE TO SHAPE US AND MOLD US AND DIRECT US IN THE RIGHT WAY, THAT'S GOING TO GO FOR FOR NOTHING.

SO, AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE HERE TODAY.

AND FROM RICHLAND CAMPUS, BARBARA MARTINEZ.

HELLO. HELLO.

NICE TO MEET YOU. I'M BARBARA KANIKA MARTINEZ.

BUT TRULY, WITHOUT STUDENT MEDIA, I DON'T THINK I WOULD BE WHERE I AM RIGHT NOW.

LIKE, IF YOU HAVE TOLD ME FOUR YEARS AGO WHEN I CAME HERE TO THE US THAT I WILL BE THE EDITOR IN A NEWSPAPER, I'LL BE LIKE, WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? BUT HONESTLY, CINEMA HAS HELPED ME SO MUCH, ESPECIALLY ON GRADE AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS.

SORRY IN NOT ONLY THAT, BUT IT HAS IMPROVED MY ENGLISH WAY A LOT.

AND BECAUSE YOU ARE EXPOSED TO THAT EDITING SCHEDULE, YOU ARE EXPOSED TO DEADLINES.

YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY AND HAVING REALLY NICE FEEDBACK FOR NOT ONLY YOUR ADVISORS BUT ALSO FOR OTHER STUDENTS.

AND I THINK THAT WITHOUT THE MEDIA, I WOULDN'T I WOULDN'T CALL THIS COUNTRY AT HOME BECAUSE I'VE BEEN ABLE TO LOOK FOR STORIES THAT ARE HAPPENING IN MY LOCAL COMMUNITY AND BEING ABLE TO SEE THIS COUNTRY IN A WAY DIFFERENT ANGLE.

SO HONESTLY, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO TALK WITH YOU GUYS TODAY.

AND I HOPE THAT WE CAN CONTINUE TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENT MEDIA DEPARTMENTS.

THANK YOU. AS YOU CAN SEE, THESE WONDERFUL STUDENTS REPRESENT SO MANY STUDENTS. EACH OF THEIR STORIES IS UNIQUE.

EACH OF THEIR STORIES AND THEIR PATH IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER.

BUT YOU CAN SEE THE BONDS THAT THEY HAVE BUILT IN THEIR CHOSEN PROFESSION OF JOURNALISM.

AND WE KNOW WE NEED GOOD JOURNALISTS IN THIS CITY AND IN THIS COUNTRY AS WE GO FORWARD.

[00:40:03]

AND I FEEL MORE CONFIDENT BECAUSE WE HAVE STUDENTS LIKE THESE AT DALLAS COLLEGE AND WE HAVE THE FACULTY AND ADVISING TO SUPPORT THEM.

SO THANK YOU BOARD FOR CONTINUING TO DO SO.

AND I THINK DANIEL WILL COME BACK FOR A MOMENT TO CLOSE US OUT.

THANK YOU ALL AGAIN FOR HAVING US AND FOR GIVING OUR STUDENTS SUCH A LONG LASTING MEMORY TO HAVE TO HOLD ON TO.

I'M JUST SUPPOSED TO COME UP AND THANK ALL OF OUR STUDENTS AGAIN, AND IT DOESN'T SAY BY NAME.

SO I'M GESTURING BOTH DIRECTIONS AND THANK YOU FOR THE HARD WORK, THE THANKLESS HOURS OR ENDLESS NIGHTS ON STAFF. MANY OF US HAVE SPENT MANY LONG NIGHTS IN THOSE NEWSROOMS. I DID AS A STUDENT COPY EDITOR AND THEY ALL DO IT NOW.

SO THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HARD WORK.

YOU WOULD LIKE TO COME UP AND WE WILL TAKE A PICTURE.

BUT I THINK THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED ALL OVER AGAIN.

THANKS, BUT NO THANKS.

OH, GREAT.

THANK YOU. SO IT'S GETTING DARK OUTSIDE.

I GOT TO GO WALK THE DOG OR WITH SANDY.

OH, OKAY.

OKAY. EVERYBODY CAN SEE HER.

YEAH, WE CAN SEE THE REAL STAR.

HERE WE GO. SO MUCH FOR PHOTO EDITING.

ALL RIGHT. WELL, LET'S SEE.

ALL RIGHT. SO YOU THINK YOU'RE NOT ON THE FLOOR ANYMORE? WELL, YOU'RE NOT ON THE FLOOR ANYMORE.

NO, IT'S ALL OVER.

OKAY. SO THEY WERE THE ONES WHO DID THE ARTICLES.

SO THEY WERE THE ONES WHO GET THE ARE THE NEXT.

THE NEXT PROGRAM. THAT GROUP'S GONE? WELL, I THINK SO.

WHILE WE CONTINUE THE THEME, WHILE WE CONTINUE THE THEME, WE'VE GOT ONE MORE GROUP THAT WILL HAVE COME IN OUR SKILLS USA GROUP.

[5.3. SkillsUSA Student Engagement & Programming]

I THINK THE SAME WEEKEND THAT DR.

SEABROOK'S COME ON UP, I THINK THE SAME WEEKEND THAT WE HAD A TEAM AT TC, WE HAD A DIFFERENT TEAM AT SKILLS USA THAT DR. SEABROOK'S WILL COME UP AND SHARE SOME DETAILS ABOUT SKILLS USA.

YOU MAY HAVE TO ADJUST HIS MIC.

HE'S VERY SHY, BUT COME ON UP.

DR. SEABROOK'S FANTASY.

THANK YOU FOR RUNNING.

MADAM CHAIR. MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, YOU HAVE TO FORGIVE MY ENTHUSIASM.

I'VE BEEN WAITING ON THIS OPPORTUNITY TO EXPRESS HOW VERY PROUD I AM.

WE ARE OF OUR STUDENT DELEGATION WHO REPRESENTED US IN HOUSTON FOR SKILLS USA.

SKILLS USA. YOU MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR IS A GLOBAL ORGANIZATION THAT FOCUSES ON STUDENTS PROVING THAT THEY HAVE THE SKILLS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE CAREER AND TECHNICAL PROGRAMS. AND SIMILAR TO THE OLYMPICS, THEY GET RECOGNIZED WITH MEDALS, GOLD, SILVER AND BRONZE.

AND WHEN I TELL YOU, THEY WERE A PART OF THE DELEGATION THAT WENT DOWN TO HOUSTON ON APRIL 7TH, TO THE NINTH OF THIS YEAR AND THIS YEAR, HOUSTON, TEXAS, WILL NEVER BE THE SAME BECAUSE WE RODE DOWN THERE, WE SHOWED UP AND WE SHOWED OUT JUST AS AN EXAMPLE.

WE WON TEN GOLD MEDALS, SEVEN SILVER AND FIVE BRONZE.

AND THE FIRST TIME THAT YOU'RE GOING TO APPLAUD THAT, YOU KNOW, HISTORICALLY

[00:45:07]

DALLAS COLLEGE FOR PARTICIPATE AS THE EL CENTRO CAMPUS.

EL CENTRO IS EXTREMELY GROUNDED BECAUSE OF THE LEADERSHIP OF INSTRUCTOR.

HOWEVER, YOU'LL HEAR FROM IN A MOMENT.

BUT THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE REALLY WENT DOWN AS A AS A COLLEGE DELEGATION.

AND AND THAT PARTLY BECAUSE, AS I INVITED MARIA ALONSO TO COME TO THE PODIUM, PARTLY BECAUSE OF OUR NEW STRUCTURE HERE AT DALLAS COLLEGE.

AND AS MARIA COMES UP, I WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE DR.

SHAWNDA FLOYD, DR.

GREG MORRIS, BECAUSE HONESTLY, IT TOOK A LITTLE BIT OF MOUNTAIN MOVING TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN.

AND WITH THAT, DR.

LANDRO, SHE IS THE DEAN OF OUR SPECIAL ACADEMIC PROGRAMS, AND SHE'S A CHAMPION IN HER OWN RIGHT.

AND THE REASON WHY WE'RE HERE TODAY.

SO THANK YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH, MADAM CHAIR.

BUT OUR REST OF TRUSTEES, CHANCELLOR LAWTON, I AM SO PROUD TO BE HERE.

THIS IS WHY WE WORK SO HARD.

THIS COMPETITION TRANSFORMED THESE STUDENTS AND THEY'RE TRANSFORMING THEIR COMMUNITIES.

SOME OF THEM COULDN'T COME BECAUSE THEY WERE WORKING.

I DON'T KNOW IF YOU SAW THE YOUNG LADY WITH HER SCRUBS THAT SPOKE ABOUT.

SHE ASKED FOR PERMISSION TO COME SPEAK AND GO BACK.

SO THESE STUDENTS ARE AMAZING, BUT IT'S A TEAM EFFORT WITHOUT THE FACULTY ADVISORS IMPOSSIBLE THAT THESE STUDENTS COULD BE READY FOR A COMPETITION AS SUCH THAT THEY WON.

NOT ONLY I AM NOT A ONE WOMAN SHOW, I HAVE NO ALY BIGGS AND HANNAH ALPHA WHO HAVE BEEN TRYING TO EXPAND SOMETHING THAT WE FOUND THAT WAS A TREASURE IN EL CENTRO.

SO THE QUESTION WAS WE HAD INCREDIBLE PIECES OF A BEAUTIFUL QUILT THAT WERE DONE.

EL CENTRO WAS COMPETING AND WINNING.

HOW DO WE EXPAND THIS? HOW DO WE GROW THIS IN AN ORGANIC AND SUSTAINABLE WAY? SO THIS SPECIAL ACADEMIC PROGRAMS, MOST PEOPLE GO SPECIAL LIKE ACADEMICS.

WHAT? I GO, WELL, WE'RE STILL TRYING TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS, BUT WHAT WE'VE DONE IS WE'VE STUDIED VERY CAREFULLY THE BEST PRACTICES OF EACH OF THE CAMPUSES, AND WE'VE BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER AND WE LEARNED FROM THE BEST.

THE PERSON THAT'S SPEAKING AFTER ME IS A CONTENT EXPERT, AND SO WE'VE ACTUALLY TAPPED INTO THESE POCKETS OF EXCELLENCE AND NOW WE'RE EXPANDING.

SO THE BEAUTY OF IT IS EL CENTRO WAS VERY WELL KNOWN.

WE HAD MANY, MANY MEDALS YEAR AFTER YEAR.

BUT NOW CEDAR VALLEY IS COMING UP WITH THAT ALSO IS NORTH LAKE.

EASTFIELD AND RICHLAND ARE OUR NEXT GOAL FOR NEXT YEAR.

SO WE HOPE TO COME BACK NOT WITH THREE CAMPUSES, BUT WITH FIVE.

AND I LOVE SEVEN.

BUT AS I SAY, SOME OF THEM TELL ME THE DEANS, THE MACHINE, SHE'S THE ONE WHO PAYS THE BILLS.

SO I'M ALWAYS GETTING ALL TYPES OF BUDGETS TO TO SUPPORT THIS.

AND I DO WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE MY BOSS, DR.

GREG MORRIS, WHO'S ALWAYS HELPING US SUPPORT THESE STUDENTS.

SO I'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE A CONTENT EXPERT, AND SHE'S ACTUALLY A FACULTY ADVISOR FOR EL CENTRO.

SHE KNOWS ALL THE INS AND OUTS.

AND ON TOP OF THAT, SHE IS ALSO THE REGION TWO ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF THE BOARD OF SKILLS USA.

AND WE HAVE DR.

SEABROOKS, REGION TWO DIRECTOR OF THE BOARD.

SO NOW WE HAVE DALLAS COLLEGE AND THE LEADERSHIP.

SO I HOPE TO SEE MORE GROWTH, MORE EXPANSION AND MORE HAPPY STUDENTS HERE WITH LOTS OF MEDALS AND ADVISORS.

HEAL UP, COME ON UP AND TALK TO US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT.

THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH FOR HAVING US HERE.

I JUST WANT TO START BY INTRODUCING YOU A LITTLE BIT TO SKILLS USA.

SO SKILLS USA IS A NATIONAL CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY STUDENT ORGANIZATION.

WE HAVE MORE THAN 300 STUDENTS NATIONWIDE AND IN DALLAS COUNTY ALONE IN THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, WE HAVE OVER 3000 REGISTERED STUDENTS.

SO JUST KNOW THAT THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR US.

WE PARTNER WITH BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY TO HELP CLOSE THE SKILLS GAP AND ENSURE THAT AMERICA HAS A SKILLED WORKFORCE.

OUR PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES ARE INTENTIONALLY DESIGNED TO DEVELOP WORKPLACE SKILLS, TECHNICAL SKILLS.

PERSONAL SKILLS. SORRY.

AND THEN. AND THAT'S WHAT THESE STUDENTS ARE ALL ABOUT, RIGHT? HOW DO WE GROW THEM AS LEADERS? SO MANY TIMES IN MY CLASSROOM, MY STUDENTS, EVERYBODY'S EXPECTING THEM TO BE ABLE TO LEARN TO DO THEIR TASK.

VERY FEW EXPECTED THEM TO LEARN TO SPEAK.

ONE OF THE PARTIES THAT I HELD TO CELEBRATE THEM, SOMEBODY CAME AND THEY WERE LIKE, WAIT, YOU DON'T TEACH PREPARED SPEECH?

[00:50:04]

HOW TO DO A PERSON WITH PREPARED SPEECH? YOU DON'T TEACH EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEECH.

HOW DID YOU DO THAT? YOU DON'T TEACH JOB INTERVIEW, BUT I DO.

THOSE ARE ALL THE THINGS THAT WE ARE TEACHING WITHIN OUR CTE PROGRAMS AND SKILLS.

USA ALLOWS OUR STUDENTS TO BE ABLE TO BE RECOGNIZED FOR MORE THAN JUST ONE THING AND BE INTENTIONAL ABOUT THEIR TRAINING FOR THESE OTHER PIECES.

AS YOU ALL KNOW, THE SUCCESS OF TSU MEMBERSHIP IS WELL DOCUMENTED.

NATIONAL GRADUATION RATES SHOW THAT FIRST YEAR STUDENTS GRADUATE, FIRST YEAR COLLEGE STUDENTS GRADUATE AT A RATE OF 17% TO 59%, DEPENDING ON IF THEY'RE FULL TIME OR PART TIME. WHEN STUDENTS ARE MEMBERS OF TSOS, THAT GRADUATION RATE IS DOCUMENTED UP TO 94%.

NOT ONLY ARE THESE STUDENTS GRADUATING MORE FREQUENTLY, BUT THEY ALSO TEND TO HAVE MUCH HIGHER GPAS.

I PERSONALLY BELIEVE THAT COMPETITION BREEDS EXCELLENCE, AND I'M EXCITED TO BE JOINED BY ALL THESE PEOPLE ADMINISTRATORS, FACULTY AND STUDENTS AS WE GROW TOGETHER TO CONTINUE THE LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE FOR DALLAS COLLEGE.

IT IS MY PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE OUR MY FELLOW ADVISORS.

THERE'S SO MUCH LIKE COLLEGE.

MR. LAWRENCE JOHNSON.

FROM CEDAR VALLEY, LATISHA BOO MARINO, KEVIN SPEAKS AND WENDELL COOKS ARE ALSO VERY INVOLVED AT THEIR CAMPUS AND FROM EL CENTRO.

THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE CHEF NINE ONE HUNTER AND CHEF PATRICK START.

AND AT THIS TIME I WOULD LIKE TO ASK THAT THE STUDENTS BE RECOGNIZED WITH ONE MORE BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE, AND I'LL TURN THE MICROPHONE BACK OVER TO DR.

SEABROOKS. EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT.

AND SO AND SHE WAS BEING EXTREMELY MODEST.

I MEAN, SHE IS INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED FOR HER ROLE AND SKILLS, YOU WOULD SAY.

IN FACT, WE WOULD NOT BE WHERE WE ARE SO QUICKLY IF NOT FOR HER LEADERSHIP.

SO CAN WE PLEASE ACKNOWLEDGE HER? NOW PLAY TO YOUR SEATS BECAUSE YOU OFFER SOME CONTEXT.

TESTY CONFLICT. 42 INSTITUTIONS COMPETED DOWN IN HOUSTON.

OVER 700 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED.

AND SO THE STUDENTS THAT YOU'RE GOING TO HEAR FROM ARE ABSOLUTELY, UNEQUIVOCALLY UNDISPUTED, THE BEST IN THEIR AREAS IN THE STATE OF TEXAS.

AND THEY WILL BE REPRESENTING US IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA, IN A FEW WEEKS TO COMPETE NATIONALLY.

SO SO WITH THAT, I WANT TO START WITH MR. SHAWN THOMAS.

ME? OH, I'M SORRY.

OKAY. THIS THOMAS WAS A GOLD MEDAL IN JOB INTERVIEW AND COMMERCIAL BANK.

OH, WOW. YES.

HELLO. THANK YOU, GUYS.

WELL, THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH FOR HAVING US TO REALLY APPRECIATE IT.

MY NAME IS SHAWN THOMAS AND I PLACED GOLD IN JOB INTERVIEW AND COMMERCIAL BANKING.

AND I AM GETTING MY ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE RIGHT NOW IN BAKING AND PASTRY WITHIN THE HOSPITALITY DEPARTMENT.

SO YEAH, THROUGH SKILLS, YOU WOULD SAY.

I NEVER EXPECTED TO BE ASKED SHEILA AND MY CHEF.

THEY APPROACHED ME. I THOUGHT I WAS IN TROUBLE.

THEY ASKED ME TO GO AND I SAID, OKAY, LET'S DO THIS.

AND I REALLY I WENT THERE AND PUT IT ALL OUT ON THE FLOOR.

AND IT WAS JUST A FABULOUS EXPERIENCE.

AND THROUGH SKILLS USA, I WAS ABLE TO KIND OF HONE MY ADAPTABILITY AND BEING ABLE TO THINK ON MY FEET.

I WAS WORKING IN AN UNFAMILIAR KITCHEN WITH UNFAMILIAR TOOLS AND HAVING TO DO THESE RECIPES AND THAT KIND OF ENVIRONMENT.

I HAD TO MAKE DECISIONS REALLY QUICKLY AND I HAD TO MAKE GOOD DECISIONS.

AND THROUGH THAT KIND OF ADAPTABILITY, I WAS ABLE TO TRUST MYSELF TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION, AND IT REALLY PAID OFF.

IN THE END. I WAS ABSOLUTELY ECSTATIC TO RECEIVE GOLD IN BOTH MY PLACES.

WITHOUT SKILLS USA AND MY INSTRUCTORS.

I REALLY WOULD NOT BE AS CONFIDENT I AM AS A PERSON TODAY, AS AN EMPLOYEE, A MANAGER, A STUDENT, A DAUGHTER, A SISTER, A PERSON.

AND I REALLY THANK SKILLS USA SO MUCH FOR THAT.

REPRESENTING EL CENTRO AS A STATE OFFICER AND ALSO AS A COMPETITOR HAS BEEN ONE OF THE GREATEST JOYS OF MY LIFE AND I'M SO EXCITED TO GO TO NATIONALS AND REPRESENT US AGAIN.

SO THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH.

WHAT AN INCREDIBLE COMBINATION OF SKILLS.

COMMERCIAL BANKING, BANKING, OPEN BANKING, BANKING MAKING, BANKING MOVEMENT.

AND THE FUNNY THING IS, THE NEXT STEP THAT WE'RE GOING TO RECOGNIZE IS GOING TO GIVE ME SOME LESSONS.

AND THAT'S MARINE GREEN'S GOLD MEDAL AND SILVER LININGS SPEAKING.

YES, INDEED. OKAY.

SORRY I'M SHORT. HELLO, EVERYONE.

I'M SO HONORED TO BE HERE FOR TONIGHT.

[00:55:02]

MY NAME IS IRENE CRUZ.

I'M CURRENTLY STUDYING FOOD AND HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT DEGREE IN EL CENTRO.

ALSO, I'M WITH PROFESSOR HEIDE AND ALSO CHEF P, CHEF NINE HUNTER.

AND THERE'S JUST THE GREATEST INSTRUCTORS AND THEY'RE SO GOOD WITH LIKE MOTIVATING US AND PUSHING US TO DO THE BEST.

SO I APPRECIATE THEM FOR THAT.

AND I LEARNED SO MUCH BEING IN THIS PROGRAM AND ALSO COMPETING AND I'M VERY COMPETITIVE.

SO I LEARNED SO MUCH ABOUT SELF AWARENESS IN THE WORKPLACE INDUSTRY BECAUSE IT EMPHASIZES THE ACTIONS YOU TAKE UNCONSCIOUSLY WHEN YOU'RE IN TENSE SITUATIONS.

SO I FEEL LIKE THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT'S SOMETHING THAT EVEN PROFESSIONALS HIGHER THAN YOU DON'T HAVE SELF AWARENESS AND THAT'S, THAT'S HOW LIKE THAT'S HOW CONFLICTS, YOU KNOW, THEY KIND OF IT KIND OF JUST YEAH.

AND I ALSO LEARNED A LOT ABOUT INNOVATION BECAUSE IT ALLOWED ME TO DO SO MUCH MORE THAN WHAT I'M FAMILIAR WITH AND SOMETHING THAT I'M LIKE, CAN I REALLY DO THAT? LIKE, FOR INSTANCE, THE EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEECH, I TOLD PROFESSOR HEIGHT, I WAS LIKE, PROFESSOR, I CAN'T DO THIS, I CAN'T DO THIS, I CAN'T TALK.

AND SHE'S LIKE, MEAN, YOU DO IT IN CLASS ALL THE TIME.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT? AND I'M LIKE, OKAY, OKAY, I'LL DO IT.

SO THEN WHEN I WAS TALKING UP THERE, 5 MINUTES, I CAN DO THIS, AND SHE SAID, THE GUY THAT WAS THERE, SHE WAS LIKE, OH, YOU FINISHED RIGHT ON THE DOT.

I WAS LIKE, OH, OKAY.

SO I FEEL LIKE IT TAUGHT ME A LOT.

NOT ONLY LIKE TO TALK FOR THAT AMOUNT OF TIME, BUT ALSO A LOT ABOUT.

SORRY. IT HELPED ME TALK.

IT HELPS ME MORE WITH COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND HOW I'M GOING TO LIKE EXPLAIN THIS AND EXPAND ALL THAT.

YEAH. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE SUPPORT.

TAKE YOUR TIME. PICK YOUR TIME.

ALL RIGHT. COME ON UP.

YOU'RE UP. JOIN US.

ALL RIGHT. CONGRATULATIONS, EVERYBODY.

SO LET'S JUST BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND THAT I THINK IT'S GOING TO BE NICE, BUT I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT PEOPLE SEE THAT IT'S NOT ILLEGAL TO SEE US ALL IN THEIR HOMES.

YOU KNOW, BUT IT'S NOT EXPECTING EVERYONE TO BE FUNNY.

I THINK IT WAS GREAT TO

[01:00:02]

BE HERE.

IT'S GOOD WE HAVE THE FLOWERS AND THE FLOWERS ON THE DIAS FOR ALL THE PICTURES.

THAT SHOULD BE. THAT SHOULD BE WHAT WE DO ALL.

OH, THAT'S GOOD.

WOW. THAT WAS VERY EXCITING.

NOW WE WILL CONTINUE WITH ITEM SIX, CHANCELLOR AND BOARD ANNOUNCEMENTS.

[6. Chancellor and Board Announcements]

CHANCELLOR. WELL, I WILL KEEP MY REMARKS SHORT.

IT'S ABOUT AN HOUR OR SO AT THIS POINT.

BUT I DID WANT TO MENTION A COUPLE OF THINGS.

CERTAINLY WHAT WE JUST HEARD IS JUST A GREAT REMINDER OF EVERYTHING WE DO.

SO WORDS LIKE LEARN NEW LIVE SKILLS, SKILLS THAT HELPED ME IN MY JOB.

WORDS LIKE PRINCETON, THE IMPORTANCE OF MY FACULTY AND MY ADVISORS AND THE SUPPORT.

SO WE JUST APPRECIATE EVERYTHING THAT ALL OF YOU DO EVERY DAY TO MAKE ALL OF THAT POSSIBLE AND TO MAKE POSSIBLE WHAT WE'LL SEE LATER THIS WEEK AT OUR GRADUATION CEREMONIES, WHERE WE ALL GET TO CELEBRATE TOGETHER THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF OUR STUDENTS.

BUT IT'S A REFLECTION OF THE WORK THAT EVERYONE AT THIS COLLEGE DOES.

AND SO I KNOW WE LOOK FORWARD TO THAT EVERY YEAR.

AND AND LET ME ALSO MENTION ANOTHER STUDENT RELATED COMMENT.

WE HAD WE HAD A FEW STUDENTS HERE FROM OUR CULINARY PROGRAM.

AND YOU'LL REMEMBER A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO WE HAD PRESTON ON THE WIN HERE, WHO WAS GOING TO COMPETE AT THE WORLD FOOD CHAMPIONSHIP. HE WON THE DALLAS ONE AND HE WAS HE WAS HEADED OFF TO THE TO THE WORLD ONE.

WELL, AS YOU MAY HAVE SEEN IN THE PAPER, HE WON.

HE NEEDS TO MAKE US A DINNER.

YEAH. AND HE WON 100 GRAND TO TAKE HIM OUT TO SUCCESS. SO I THINK OUR ALUMNI TEAM HAS ALREADY BEEN CONNECTING WITH HIM.

BUT OBVIOUSLY, WE'RE VERY PROUD OF HIM.

YOU REMEMBER HIM AND HIS DAD WERE HERE.

BUT WHAT A GREAT, AMAZING ACCOMPLISHMENT.

AND SO I ALSO WANT TO DO A COUPLE OF QUICK INTRODUCTIONS FOR NEW TEAM MEMBERS THAT HAVE RECENTLY JOINED US, IF DR.

FLOYD WILL COME UP. WE WANT TO INTRODUCE GENERAL JONES, WHO'S OUR NEW VICE PROVOST FOR THE SCHOOL OF CREATIVE ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT AND DESIGN.

SHE BRINGS A WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE HERE IN DALLAS COLLEGE.

SO WE'RE GLAD THAT SHE'S HERE.

SO. DR. FLOYD OKAY, GOOD.

WELL, GOOD EVENING. BRAVO TRUSTEES CHANCELLOR LANNAN.

I HAVE THE DISTINCT PLEASURE OF INTRODUCING MRS. HARPIST SILKY JONES, OUR NEW VICE PROVOST FOR CREATIVE ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT AND DESIGN.

VICE PROVOST SILKY JONES BRINGS TO DALLAS COLLEGE OVER A DECADE OF EXPERIENCE IN ARTS ADMINISTRATION, ALONG WITH SCHOOL AND NONPROFIT LEADERSHIP.

MOST RECENTLY, SHE WAS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE DAVINCI ACADEMY IN MINNESOTA.

SHE CURRENTLY SERVES ON THE NATIONAL ADVISORY COUNCIL FOR AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS.

IS THE BOARD CHAIR AND CO-FOUNDER OF THE PROFESSIONAL THEATER AND DANCE YOUTH ACADEMY AND A NEW LEADERS COUNCIL FELLOW.

THIS IS JONES.

IT'S AN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND AN ARTS EDUCATION FROM HARVARD UNIVERSITY, AND SHE IS ALSO A LICENSED PRINCIPAL AND SUPERINTENDENT.

PLEASE JOIN ME IN WELCOMING MRS. JONES. WELL, THE CHANCELLOR AND CHAIR BRAVO AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES.

I JUST WANTED TO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE DALLAS COLLEGE.

I'M REALLY EXCITED AND INVIGORATED AFTER HEARING FROM SO MANY STUDENTS, MANY OF WHOM ARE IN THE PROGRAM THAT I'LL BE SUPPORTING TO REALLY EMBRACE ALL THE CREATIVE, ARTISTIC STUDENTS IN DALLAS COUNTY AND BRIDGE COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS ON BEHALF OF THE COLLEGE.

I REALLY SEE THE CREATIVE ARTS WORKFORCE AS A HUGE IMPACT ON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND ALSO FEEL HOW CRUCIAL IT IS TO SUPPORT ARTISTS IN DEVELOPING THE TOOLS AND TRADES THEY NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL.

SO ONCE AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME AND I LOOK FORWARD TO SERVING YOU.

WELCOME. NEXT, I WANT TO INTRODUCE A KEY MEMBER OF MY TEAM, JUAN GARCIA.

COME ON UP. WHO HAS JOINED US.

YOU ON WEEK FOUR NOW, I THINK JOINED IN AS CHIEF OF STAFF.

FOUR WEEKS FEELS LIKE 40 PROBABLY, BUT.

BUT AS AS HE CAN TELL YOU, HE WAS ONE OF OUR STUDENTS BACK IN THE DAY AND HAS HAD AMAZING ACCOMPLISHMENTS SINCE THAT TIME.

AND AND SO I RECRUITED HIM BACK HERE FROM THE CITY OF DALLAS, WHERE HE WAS WORKING FOR THE CITY MANAGER AND THAT TEAM THERE.

SO WANTED TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

SURE. SO, AGAIN, I'M GARCIA.

[01:05:01]

SO I'M ORIGINALLY FROM MEXICO, BUT I GREW UP IN OAK CLIFF, SO I REP OAK CLIFF EVERY CHANCE I GET.

AND THEN SO I'M A PRODUCT OF DISD.

SO I WENT TO EL CARIBE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, STOCKER MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND THEN I WENT TO SUNSET HIGH SCHOOL AND THEN ENDED UP GRADUATING FROM WHERE MY HUTCHINS HIGH SCHOOL, WHERE I KIND OF HIT A ROADBLOCK AT THAT POINT SINCE I WAS AN UNDOCUMENTED STUDENT AT THE TIME.

SO I DIDN'T KNOW THAT I COULD GO TO COLLEGE UNTIL I FOUND OUT ABOUT THE NORIEGA BILL OR THE HB 1403 BILL THAT WAS PASSED IN 2001 THAT KIND OF ALLOWED UNDOCUMENTED STUDENTS LIKE MYSELF AT THE TIME TO BE ABLE TO ATTEND SCHOOL COLLEGE WITH IN-STATE TUITION.

SO I WAS KIND OF THE BIGGEST BLESSING, I THINK, FOR ME THAT I WAS ABLE TO FIND THAT OUT, WENT TO COLLEGE.

AND I THINK FOR ME THE BIGGEST THING FOR ME THAT I GOT FROM CEDAR BALLARD'S VALLEY COLLEGE AT THE TIME WAS THAT I JUST WENT JUST LIKE, YOU KNOW, SOME SOME STUDENTS WERE TALKING ABOUT EARLIER JUST TO GO AND GET MY CREDITS AND THEN JUST TRANSFER OUT.

BUT I WAS ACTUALLY INVITED TO A STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION, SGA MEETING, AND THEY'RE LIKE, HEY, THERE'S PIZZA.

AND THEY'RE LIKE, AND SO AND YOU KNOW, AND AT THE TIME, YOU KNOW, I WAS A STRUGGLING COLLEGE STUDENT, SO I WAS LIKE, YES, I'LL GO, I'LL TAKE SOME FREE PIZZA.

AND, YOU KNOW, THE FUNNIEST PART IS I WAS WORKING AT MCDONALD'S AT THE SAME TIME, SO I GOT PIZZA AND THEN I GOT BURGERS RIGHT AFTER THAT.

SO BUT AND YEAH, SO I THINK THAT WAS KIND OF ONE OF THE BIGGEST THINGS THAT KIND OF EXPOSED ME TO THE POSSIBILITIES FOR ME TO BE ABLE TO SERVE MY COMMUNITY.

AND, YOU KNOW, WHILE I WAS THERE, I WAS I BECAME THE PRESIDENT OF STUDENT GOVERNMENT THE NEXT SEMESTER.

THEN I WAS A STUDENT AMBASSADOR AS WELL, BUT NONE OF THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE WITHOUT BEING A RISING STAR STUDENT.

SO I WAS ABLE TO BE ONE OF THOSE STUDENTS THAT TOOK ADVANTAGE AND WAS ABLE AND PRIVILEGED TO BE ABLE TO RECEIVE THAT THAT ASSISTANCE THAT I NEEDED IN ORDER FOR ME TO GO AND DO BETTER THINGS. AFTER THAT, WENT OVER TO YOU AND AND RECEIVED MY BACHELOR'S DEGREE AND THEN RECEIVED A MASTER'S IN EDUCATION AND THEN RECEIVED AN MBA FROM TO DALLAS AS WELL.

BEFORE, AS SOON AS I GRADUATED FROM UNT, SOMEBODY WAS ABLE TO SEND ME A RANDOM LINK ABOUT A JOB POSITION IN AUSTIN AND WORKING AS A LEGISLATIVE AIDE. AND I APPLIED AND THEY CALLED ME AND THEY'RE LIKE, HEY, YOU GOT TWO WEEKS TO MOVE TO AUSTIN.

AND YOU KNOW, AND SO I DID.

AND I WAS ABLE TO KIND OF GET SOME EXPERIENCE THERE AND THAT PART OF THE FIELD AND THEN CAME BACK TO MOUNTAIN VIEW AND THAT'S WHERE I WAS WORKING UNDER THE UPPER BOUND PROGRAM I WORKED AT FOR ABOUT FOUR YEARS.

AND I WAS THE ONLY BILINGUAL STUDENT, THE ONLY BILINGUAL STAFF MEMBER THERE AT THE TIME, WHICH MADE A BIG DIFFERENCE JUST BECAUSE MOUNTAIN VIEW AND THE AREA, THERE IS A LOT OF FIRST GENERATION LIKE MYSELF, LOW INCOME STUDENTS LIKE MYSELF, AND UNDOCUMENTED STUDENTS LIKE MYSELF AS WELL.

SO I FELT LIKE I WAS ABLE TO MAKE A BIG IMPACT TO NOT ONLY THE STUDENTS, THE COMMUNITY, BUT ALSO THE PARENTS.

BECAUSE LIKE MYSELF, MY PARENTS DIDN'T EVEN FINISH MIDDLE SCHOOL.

SO IT WAS MORE LIKE, GO FIGURE IT OUT, IT'S OUT THERE.

AND THAT'S WHAT I DID.

SO I FELT LIKE JUST WORKING FOR THAT PROGRAM KIND OF GAVE ME A LITTLE BIT MORE EXPERIENCE AND BEING ABLE TO ASSIST THOSE STUDENTS.

THEN I WENT UP TO WORK AT UT DALLAS AS AN ADMISSIONS COUNSELOR, WHERE I KIND OF ALSO WAS ABLE TO ASSIST A LOT OF STUDENTS WHO WERE IN MY SHOES UNDOCUMENTED STUDENTS, FIRST GENERATION, LOW INCOME STUDENTS FROM THE OAK CLIFF AREA AND ALL THE SURROUNDING AREA AS WELL, AND THEN ENDED UP AT THE CITY OF DALLAS WORKING UNDER THE CITY MANAGER'S OFFICE WHERE I DID A SIMILAR ROLE THAT WHAT I'M ABOUT TO START DOING HERE AS WELL.

AND I WAS GIVEN THAT OPPORTUNITY JUST, YOU KNOW, I PROVED MYSELF AND I FELT LIKE THEY NOTICED MY WORK ETHIC AND ALSO WAS ABLE TO CONNECT WITH THE COMMUNITY JUST BY BEING FROM HERE. AND NOW I'M BACK.

SO HOPEFULLY I'M ABLE TO MAKE AN IMPACT LIKE I TRIED TO DO IN MY PAST YEARS AND MY PAST POSITIONS.

AND I WELCOME THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE ABLE TO MOVE FORWARD AND HELP THE DALLAS COLLEGE MOVE FORWARD AS WELL.

SO THANK YOU FOR.

THANKS BELONG TO LUCKY TO HAVE WON HERE AND AND BE PART OF OUR TEAM.

I'LL JUST MENTION QUICKLY, I APPRECIATE TRUSTEE BOYD AND SEVERAL MEMBERS OF OUR TEAM THAT WENT TO THE RCC CONVENTION.

SEVERAL OF OUR TEAM MEMBERS PRESENTED THERE AND SEVERAL HOPEFULLY LEARN SOME THINGS THERE AND BROUGHT THAT BACK.

BUT CERTAINLY APPRECIATE TRUSTEE BOYD, YOU YOU JOIN HIM FOR THAT.

AND THEN LET ME JUST MENTION, OBVIOUSLY, WE JUST HAD ELECTIONS BOARD ELECTIONS AND SO SO WELCOME BACK, JERRI BRAVO FOR SIX YEARS WITHOUT HAVING TO RUN.

SO GLAD YOU'RE HERE.

AND VICE CHAIR RITTER.

I WELCOME YOU BACK AS WELL FOR FOUR, SIX YEAR TERMS. SO CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU BOTH.

WE KNOW THAT THE RACE IN DISTRICT ONE STILL CONTINUES INTO A RUNOFF ON ON JUNE 18TH.

AND WE'LL BE SWEARING IN OUR ELECTED TRUSTEES THAT THAT JUST WENT THROUGH THE ELECTION PROCESS AT THE JUNE 7TH BOARD MEETING.

[01:10:04]

BUT WELCOME WELCOME BACK.

AND THEN ALSO IN CLOSING CLOSING, I'D LIKE TO THANK TRUSTEE ZIMMERMAN FOR HER YEARS OF SERVICE FOR YOUR PASSIONATE COMMITMENT TO YOUR IDEALS AND YOUR VALUES.

TRUSTEE ZIMMERMAN AND I FIRST GOT TO KNOW EACH OTHER ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO WHEN WE WOULD BOTH SIT IN THE BACK OF THE ROOM.

AND SO SHE'S SHE'S BEEN AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT ON BOTH SIDES OF THIS HORSESHOE FOR QUITE SOME TIME.

AND SO WE WE APPRECIATE YOUR SERVICE THE LAST SIX YEARS.

THANK YOU. TO.

IT'S. MADAM CHAIR, THAT CONCLUDES MY REMARKS. DO ANY TRUSTEES HAVE ANY COMMENTS? LET'S START WITH TRUSTEE FLORES.

I JUST WANT TO THANK DR.

ANA ROMERO JUAREZ, WHO JOINED ME LAST WEEK IN A WEBINAR TO TALK TO A MOTHERS ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID AND THE OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE HERE AT DALLAS COLLEGE.

THE ORGANIZATION ADVANCING IS THE ONE THAT EXTENDED THE INVITATION, AND THAT IS A PROGRAM FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW A SCHOOL READINESS PROGRAM FROM BIRTH TO FOUR YEARS OLD.

AND 97% OF THE STUDENTS THAT GO THROUGH THAT PROGRAM ENTER READY FOR SCHOOL.

AND THE MOTHERS ALSO ARE LEARNING ABOUT HOW TO WORK WITH THE CHILD SO THAT AND BE AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT IN THEIR CHILD'S EDUCATION SO THAT GRADUATE GRADUATION RATES FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND THEN FROM COLLEGE ARE ALSO VERY HIGH FOR THE ADVANCED STUDENTS.

SO DR. JUAREZ REPRESENTATIVES VERY, VERY WELL.

SHE'S VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE. SHE'S DEAN OF RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION, AND SO DID AN EXCELLENT JOB, PERFECTLY BILINGUAL, BECAUSE IT WAS ALL IN SPANISH.

SO SOME GOOD WORK AND GOOD REPRESENTATION FOR DALLAS COLLEGE.

OKAY. TRUST ME. I JUST WANTED TO SAY IT WAS REALLY AN HONOR AND A PRIVILEGE TO ATTEND THE NATIONAL CONVENTION.

IN MY YEARS OF PUBLIC SERVICE, I'VE ALWAYS FOUND THAT IT'S EXTREMELY HELPFUL TO TO GO AND ASSOCIATE WITH THE OTHER INSTITUTIONS THAT ARE IN THE SAME OPPORTUNITY BUSINESS WE'RE IN.

AND YOU LEARN A LOT.

AND I MEET A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT ARE GOOD REFERENCES THAT YOU CAN CALL ONCE YOU GET BACK HOME AND WITH ISSUES AND SO FORTH.

AND SO I'M VERY THANKFUL FOR THAT.

AND AND IT'S ALSO A TIME WHERE WITH THE STAFF MEMBERS THAT WE HAD FROM THE COLLEGE TO BE ABLE TO SPEND MORE INFORMAL TIME AND GETTING TO KNOW THEM AS INDIVIDUALS AND GETTING TO KNOW SOME OF THE IDEAS AND THOUGHTS THAT THEY MAY NOT TAKE THE TIME OR HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPRESS IN A MORE FORMAL ENVIRONMENT.

SO I ALWAYS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT OPPORTUNITY FOR EVERY CONVENTION OR GATHERING OF PEOPLE THAT ARE IN THE SAME OPPORTUNITY FIELD THAT WE'RE IN.

AND SO I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT.

AND IT WAS JUST A GOOD VISIT AND I BELIEVE THERE WOULD BE A LOT OF GOOD IDEAS AND THOUGHTS THAT WILL COME FROM IT, AND IT WAS JUST A GOOD TIME.

SO THANK YOU, STAFF MEMBERS FOR TOLERATING MY IN-DEPTH QUESTIONS.

THIS VICE CHAIR WRITER.

WELL, I JUST WANTED TO REFLECT FOR A FEW MINUTES ON THE RECENT ELECTION PROCESS.

IT'S HUMBLING TO GO OUT AND TALK TO YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS ABOUT ABOUT EVERYTHING WE DO.

BUT I'LL TELL YOU, YOU KNOW, USUALLY THE FIRST REACTION WHEN YOU KNOCK ON THE DOOR SAID, HI, I'M PHIL RITTER AND I'M RUNNING FOR DALLAS COLLEGE.

IT'S WHAT'S DALLAS COLLEGE? AND THEN THEY ASK ME, WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR OFFICE? BECAUSE THEY DON'T REALLY KNOW WHY WE WERE ELECTED.

AND. BUT FOR ME, THE PAST THREE WEEKS HAVE BEEN ABOUT, YOU KNOW, REALLY GOING OUT AND TALKING TO A LOT OF MY NEIGHBORS ABOUT WHAT WE DO, WHAT YOU DO, WHAT WE DO TOGETHER.

AND THE THE AFFIRMATION THAT THAT I RECEIVED FROM PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY IN SMALL GROUPS, WHEN YOU SIT DOWN WITH LIKE, YOU KNOW, 20 OR 30 PEOPLE AND YOU JUST SAY, HEY, YOU KNOW, HERE'S HOW THE PLACE IS RUN, HERE'S THE QUALITY OF THE PEOPLE THAT WE HAVE WORKING HERE.

HERE'S HOW WE IMPACT OUR STUDENTS.

HERE'S WHY WE'RE DOING ONE COLLEGE.

YOU KNOW, HERE'S HOW OUR MISSION IS EXPANDED TO SERVE ALL THE COMMUNITY.

AND AND, YOU KNOW, PEOPLE ARE BLOWN AWAY BY THIS PLACE.

I MEAN, THEY REALLY, REALLY ARE.

AND IT'S AND IT'S YOU.

I MEAN, IT'S IT'S YOU GUYS ARE WHAT YOU DO.

SO I'M GRATEFUL FOR THE CHANCE TO SERVE ANOTHER SIX YEARS.

I HOPE YOU ALL WILL FEEL THE SAME WAY.

WE'LL SEE. BUT, YOU KNOW, IT'S GREAT TO BE BACK.

AND AND THANKS TO MANY OF YOU WHO'VE OFFERED ME INDIVIDUAL ENCOURAGEMENT AND SUPPORT ON THIS JOURNEY.

AND I'M PROUD TO BE A PART OF THIS GREAT ENTERPRISE.

THANK YOU. AND I ECHO TRUSTEE

[01:15:10]

RITTER'S COMMENTS, ALTHOUGH I DIDN'T HAVE TO RUN A CAMPAIGN.

I'M VERY HUMBLED TO BE ABLE TO SERVE YOU FOR ANOTHER SIX YEARS.

I'VE LEARNED.

I THOUGHT I KNEW ABOUT DALLAS COLLEGE BEFORE I RAN, AND YOU ALL HAVE AMAZED ME WITH ALL THE GREAT THINGS THAT WE DO FOR OUR COMMUNITY.

SO I'M GRATEFUL THAT I WILL BE ABLE TO SERVE ANOTHER TERM FOR YOU ALL.

ALSO, I WANTED TO THANK ALL THE STUDENTS WHO WERE HERE EARLIER AND THEIR ADVISORS AND DEANS AND THE WHOLE TEAM THAT GOT THEM THESE AWARDS BECAUSE IT'S TRULY A TEAM EFFORT. SO THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY WHO PLAYED A PART IN THAT.

AS WE KNOW, GRADUATION IS THIS WEEK.

ALL OF US TRUSTEES ARE EXCITED ABOUT THAT BECAUSE IT'S WHERE WE GET TO CELEBRATE OUR STUDENTS FINISHING ONE CHAPTER AND CONTINUING TO HOPEFULLY ANOTHER CHAPTER EITHER WITH US OR ELSEWHERE.

SO VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

I'D LIKE TO ALSO RECOGNIZE OUR NEWLY RETIRED EMPLOYEES WHO WILL BE TRANSITIONING TO TO THE NEXT PHASE FO PHOTON FOR 22.5 YEARS.

AND CASA ELENA, WHO SERVED NEARLY 20 YEARS WITH DALLAS COLLEGE.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME, ENERGY AND COMMITMENT TO OUR STUDENTS, AND WE WISH YOU LUCK IN YOUR NEXT CHAPTER.

AND FINALLY, I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO THANK TRUSTEE ZIMMERMAN FOR HER SERVICE TO DALLAS COLLEGE.

I FIRST MET TRUSTEE ZIMMERMAN ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO, AND WE GOT TO KNOW EACH OTHER VERY WELL.

WE WERE I THINK WE DID LIKE 404 CAMPAIGN FORUMS AND DROVE ALL AROUND CAMPUS, ALL OUR CAMPUSES.

AND SO YOU HAVE BEEN A VERY CONSISTENT TRUSTEE WHO WAS ALWAYS PREPARED FOR HER THINGS AND VERY THOUGHTFUL COMMENTS.

AND I THINK YOU REPRESENTED YOUR CONSTITUENCIES TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITIES, AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO US, AND WE HOPE THAT YOU WILL ENGAGE IN THE FUTURE.

AND I KNOW YOU WERE ADMIRING MY FLOWERS UP HERE.

THEY'RE ACTUALLY FOR YOU.

WELL. I'M GOING TO ASK RICK GLASSMAN FROM. CHAD, THANK YOU.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.

LET'S NOT EXPERIMENT WITH FLOWERS, WHAT GOODIES? AND WITH THAT, IF THERE ARE NO OTHER TRUSTEE COMMENTS, WE WILL MOVE ON TO ITEM SEVEN.

SO ITEM SEVEN OPPORTUNITY FOR MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND CHANCELLOR TO DECLARE CONFLICT OF INTEREST SPECIFIC TO THIS AGENDA.

NOPE. GREAT.

SO THEN WE WILL MOVE ON TO THE CONSENT AGENDA.

[8. Consent Agenda]

DO I HAVE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA? SOME OF. SECOND.

SO FIRST BY TRUSTEE FLORES.

SECOND BY TRUSTEE BOYD.

ALL IN FAVOR. I HAVE QUESTIONS AND QUESTIONS OVER ME.

SO I WAS ON 8 TO 8.

WHAT IS THE CURRENT STUDENT ENROLLMENT AT RICHLAND COLLEGIATE HIGH SCHOOL? OKAY. ANNA BEEN HERE AND I THINK 365.

A. I BELIEVE IT'S 365 STUDENTS AND WE'VE GOT CAPACITY FOR 900, CORRECT? THAT WOULD BE THE CHARTER CAPACITY.

RIGHT NOW, WE'RE SERVING JUNIORS AND SENIORS.

OUR GOAL FOR THIS FALL IS 400 STUDENTS.

WE'VE NEVER REALLY MEANT THAT GOAL.

I'D BE INTERESTED TO KNOW WHY.

I THINK IT'S BECAUSE PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT IT.

BUT ANYWAY. RIGHT. AND PART OF THE THERE'S A BUDGET ADJUSTMENT REQUEST IN THE BOARD AGENDA AND PART OF THAT IS TO DO MORE MARKETING AND MAKE SURE THAT STUDENTS ARE AWARE OF THIS OPPORTUNITY, PARTICULARLY THOSE WHO ARE GOING INTO THE 11TH GRADE THIS COMING YEAR.

GREAT. THANK YOU. AND THEN A TO B, SO IS THE TYPICAL AMOUNT OF YEARS FOR OUR AGREEMENT THAT.

FIVE YEARS. YES.

YES, IT IS. JUST CURIOUS ABOUT THAT.

AND THEN EIGHT THREE.

ON FMLA.

SO FMLA ALLOWS UP TO 12 WEEKS OF LEAVE.

CORRECT? YES.

BUT WHAT HAPPENS IF AN EMPLOYEE NEEDS MORE THAN THE 12 WEEKS BECAUSE OF THE SITUATION THEY'RE DEALING WITH OR EITHER FOR THEMSELVES OR FAMILY MEMBERS? WELL, THEN IT CONVERTS OVER TO AN ACCOMMODATION BASED ON WHATEVER THE CONDITION WAS THAT MIGHT HAVE QUALIFIED THEM FROM FOR AMLA.

SO THEY GET 12 WEEKS ONLY FOR THAT, AND THEN WE START TO ANALYZE IT UNDER THE ACCOMMODATION PROCESS TO SEE IF THEY'RE AVAILABLE FOR IF THEY CAN RECEIVE AN AS AN

[01:20:09]

ACCOMMODATION EXTENDED LEAVE BEYOND FMLA TIME.

AND WHAT'S THE LONGEST THAT YOU KNOW OF THAT? WE'VE HAD AN EMPLOYEE THAT WENT OUT ON FLA BUT THEN HAD TO GO INTO AN ACCOMMODATION.

TOTAL, IT'S GONE UP TO ABOUT 12 MONTHS.

OKAY. INTERESTING.

AND THEN SUSPENSION WOULD PAY WHEN A TERM CONTRACT EMPLOYEES ARE SUSPENDED WITH PAY TYPICALLY.

HOW LONG DOES THE SUSPENSION LAST BEFORE THE DETERMINATION IS MADE TO EITHER RETAIN THE EMPLOYEE OR TERMINATE THEM? TYPICALLY, A PERSON IS SUSPENDED WITH PAY IF IT'S AN INVESTIGATION AND IT'S PENDING.

SO WE TRY TO DO IT AS PROMPTLY AS POSSIBLE.

SO IT'S FOR THE PENDENCY OF THE INVESTIGATION.

WE TRY TO RESOLVE MOST OF THEM WITHIN 30 DAYS.

IF IT GETS LONGER THAN THAT, THEN WE EXTEND IT.

BUT IT DOESN'T USUALLY GO MORE THAN A MONTH OR TWO.

OKAY, SO WHAT'S THE LONGEST THAT YOU CAN REMEMBER THAT IT'S GONE? I WOULD SAY THERE HAVE BEEN EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES, BUT I WOULD SAY MAYBE 2 TO 3 MONTHS.

YES. AND SOME EXCUSE ME.

SOMETIMES IF THERE'S A CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION, WE HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THE CRIMINAL DOCKETS.

AND WE'VE HAD SO I CAN THINK OF SOME EMPLOYEES WHERE WE'VE HAD SOME CRIMINAL ENGAGEMENT THAT PERSISTED.

OKAY. GOT YOU. AND THEN SUSPENSION.

SUSPENSION WITHOUT PAY FOR THE TERM CONTRACT EMPLOYEE THAT'S SUSPENDED WITHOUT PAY.

THE POLICY STATES THAT THEY WILL BE SUSPENDED WITHOUT PAY FOR A DEFINITE PERIOD OF TIME SET BY THE BOARD.

SO COULD YOU PLEASE REMIND ME WHAT WE'VE SAID AS THE DEFINITE PERIOD OF TIME THAT I ACTUALLY CANNOT ANSWER IN TERMS OF A TIME PERIOD? I DON'T BELIEVE THE BOARD IS ACTUALLY TAKING ANY ACTION ON THAT.

OKAY. SO THEN WHY THAT WORDING IN THERE IF WE DON'T HAVE.

THE TIMES SAID DEFINED.

THAT'S ME. THAT'S NEW TO ME LANGUAGE.

AND WE'VE NOT, IN MY EXPERIENCE HERE, HAD A SUSPENSION WITHOUT PAY INCIDENT IN MY EIGHT YEARS HERE.

IF IF WE WERE TO DO THAT, IT WOULD BE A CASE BY CASE DETERMINATION.

WE WOULD HAVE TO CONVENE THE BOARD, PRESENT THE BOARD IN EXECUTIVE SESSION.

THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE OF THESE INCIDENT GIVING RISE TO A RECOMMENDATION OF SUSPENSION WITHOUT PAY AND THEN SET THAT BASED ON ON THAT INFORMATION.

THIS HAS B HAS TOLD US THIS IS THE LANGUAGE WE SHOULD HAVE.

WE NEED TO HAVE SOME DEFINITION BECAUSE IT SAYS THE BOARD HAS DEFINED IT.

SO THAT'S JUST A POSSIBILITY.

WE ALL LOOK AT AND COME BACK TO US.

WE WILL CERTAINLY DO SO.

AND IF WE NEED TO BRING AN AMENDMENT, WE'LL DO SO BECAUSE I'M UNCOMFORTABLE THAT IT SAYS WE'VE SET THAT WHEN WE HAVEN'T.

OKAY. SO IT'S PAGE 33.

YEAH, I THINK IT'S I DO.

I THINK IT'S DISCRETIONARY. WE'LL COME BACK IF WE IF WE FEEL WE NEED TO CHANGE IT.

BUT I THINK THE INTENT OF THAT LANGUAGE IS THAT IT'S SET CASE BY CASE CIRCUMSTANCE BASED ON THE INCIDENT THAT GIVES RISE TO THE SUSPENSION.

SO YOU'RE GOING TO COME BACK.

WE'LL COME BACK IF WE FEEL WE NEED ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE.

ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE IN TERMS OF CHANGING UP THE DEFINITE PERIOD OF TIME OR LANGUAGE TELLING, ESTABLISHING WHAT THE PERIOD OF TIME IS.

I WOULD PREFER RATHER THAN DO IT ON THE FLY.

TO COME BACK WITH WITH A DEFINITIVE RESPONSE ON THAT WHEN I CAN.

BUT I THINK IT MAY BE ONE IT'LL BE ONE OR THE OTHER, BUT MY RECOMMENDATION WOULD BE THAT IT'LL PROBABLY BE NOT SETTING A DEFINITE TIME, BUT PRESCRIBING A CIRCUMSTANCE FOR A PROCEDURE FOR THAT.

THANK YOU. THEN I WASN'T FORGETFUL.

I THOUGHT I HAD FORGOTTEN WHAT WE HAD SAID AS A PERIOD OF TIME.

THOSE ARE MY QUESTIONS. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

ANY OTHER DISCUSSION ON ITEM A? OKAY. SO NOW WE WILL VOTE ON THE MOTION TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA.

ALL IN FAVOR. PLEASE SAY I OPPOSE.

PLEASE SAY NAY ABSTENTIONS.

THE MOTION PASSES.

OKAY, SO ITEM NINE, WE HAVE ONE ITEM.

[9. Individual Items]

I'LL MOVE APPROVAL OF ITEM 991.

THANK YOU. TRUSTEE COMPTON.

CAN I GET A SECOND, SECOND? SECOND BY TRUSTEE BOYD.

ANY DISCUSSION? ALL RIGHT. ALL IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY I.

ALL OPPOSE THIS TODAY.

ABSTENTIONS. MOTION PASSES.

ITEM TEN, WE HAVE A POLICY ITEM FOR FIRST READING.

[10. Policy Items - First Reading]

IF YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS ON THAT, THIS IS FIRST READING.

SO ROB AND TRICIA, YOU HAVE GOT QUESTIONS.

AND IN THE INTEREST OF TIME, I'LL JUST GIVE YOU THE QUESTIONS AND YOU CAN RESPOND.

WE WILL COME BACK TO WE WILL ADDRESS THIS.

THANK YOU FOR THAT.

ANY OTHER TRUSTEES? NOPE. OKAY, GREAT.

ITEM 11 INFORMATIVE REPORTS.

[11. Informative Reports]

[01:25:02]

ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS ON ANY OF THE INFORMATIVE REPORTS? OK. AND THERE WILL BE NO NEED FOR EXECUTIVE SESSION TODAY.

OH, COME ON, LET'S HAVE ANOTHER ONE.

JUST FOR FUN.

NOT DURING THIS MEETING.

AND SO AT THAT IT IS 6:10 P.M.

WE ARE NOW ADJOURNED.
