TEXAS OPEN READING ACT.WE ARE NOW IN SESSION OF MAY TEN AT 204P.
THE COMMITTEE MEETING IS BEING BROADCAST OVER THE INTERNET, AND THE AUDIO RECORDING AND TRANSCRIPT OF THIS MEETING ARE BEING MADE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC ON THE BOARD'S WEBSITE AFTER THE MEETING AT A LATER DATE.
[2. Certification of Notice Posted for the Meeting]
FIRST OF ALL, CAN YOU PLEASE CONFIRM THIS MEETING PERSONAL IMPORTANCE FOR THE BOARD AND CERTIFY THAT THIS MEETING WAS POSTED ACCORDING TO SECTION 5511054 AND THE TEXAS GOVERNMENT. THANK YOU, SIR.DO WE HAVE ANY CITIZENS DESIRING TO ADDRESS THE BOARD? THANK YOU. WE HAVE TWO PRESENTATIONS TO THE COMMITTEE TODAY.
WE'RE GOING TO FLIP THE ORDER AND FIRST OFF, APOLOGIZE TO EVERYBODY FOR THE DELAY.
AND WE HAVE SOME OUTSIDE GUESTS WITH US.
WE'RE REALLY GLAD THAT YOU'RE HERE.
[4.2. Spring 2022: Automated Vehicles]
SO WE'RE GOING TO BEGIN WITH THE PRESENTATION ON AUTOMATED VEHICLES.WILKINSON, WE'RE GOING TO KICK THIS OFF FOR.
BUT WE'LL GO AHEAD AND GET STARTED.
AND I HAVE AT THE TABLE WITH ME JUSTIN CUNNINGHAM AND GEORGE LIQUN AND THEY ARE BOTH INTERNAL FOLKS.
THEY WILL INTRODUCE THEMSELVES WHEN WE GET TO THEIR SECTION.
AND DURING THE FIRST PART OF THIS PRESENTATION FOR DR.
IRIS FREEMAN, WHO IS ASSOCIATE VICE CHANCELLOR OF ADVANCEMENT DEVELOPMENT, SHE OUT ILL TODAY.
SO I'M GOING TO WING IT AND TAKE HER SLIDES AND TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ADVANCEMENTS AND HOW THE PROJECT THAT EVERYBODY ELSE IS GOING TO TALK ABOUT TODAY, WHICH IS AUTOMATED VEHICLES, HOW THAT IS ADVANCEMENT AND HOW WE ARE THINKING ABOUT ADVANCEMENT IN THE NEW STRUCTURE OF DALLAS COLLEGE.
AGAIN, WE'LL INTRODUCE THEM AS THEY COME UP.
SO I'LL START OUT AND TALK ABOUT OUR FIRST SLIDE, WHICH IS SLIDE THREE.
WHO'S DRIVING THIS? THEY'RE DRIVING THE PRESENTATION.
THERE ARE SOME AUTOMATED VEHICLES MOVING AROUND ON HIGHWAY.
SO AS WE THINK ABOUT HOW EVERYTHING IS CHANGING AND THE SPEED OF WHICH THINGS ARE CHANGING.
ESPECIALLY POST-PANDEMIC, HOW QUICKLY THINGS ARE CHANGING.
SO WE ARE THINKING ABOUT THINGS IN A MUCH DIFFERENT WAY.
WE'RE TRYING TO BE VERY STRATEGIC, VERY INTENTIONAL.
WE HAVE TO KEEP UP IN THIS WORLD WHERE THINGS ARE CHANGING SO QUICKLY.
WE ARE ABOUT SOLVING PROBLEMS AND WE'VE GOT A LOT OF THOSE TO SOLVE.
SO WE'VE GOT A LOT OF GREAT PEOPLE TO HELP SOLVE THEM.
PARTNERS IN THE COMMUNITY, OUR OWN INTERNAL STAFF AND USE BOARD MEMBERS TO HELP US DO THAT.
BUT REALLY WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT IS HOW DO WE HELP DALLAS COUNTY BE REALLY A FORWARD LOOKING COMMUNITY WHERE EVERYBODY HAS EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR EDUCATION BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL, FOR GOOD JOBS, FOR SUCCESSFUL LIVES AND HAPPY LIVES WHERE WE LIVE.
NEXT SLIDE. YOU'VE SEEN THIS A LOT, A MILLION TIMES.
I CALL THIS SLIDE, BUT IT'S HARD TO SEE ON THE SCREEN.
BUT THIS IS ADVANCEMENT AND THIS IS HOW WE THINK ABOUT ADVANCEMENT.
IT TAKES EVERYBODY TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS THAT WE HAVE IN THIS GAME AND PROVIDE THOSE OPPORTUNITIES ACROSS THE BOARD EQUALLY FAIRLY WITH EQUITY. AND WE'VE WORKED ON THIS NETWORK, BUILDING THIS NETWORK FOR MANY YEARS NOW, AND THE SLIDE HAS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS AS WE'VE UNDERSTOOD MORE ABOUT OUR ROLE AND WHAT WE NEED TO DO.
I'VE TALKED JUST BRIEFLY BEFORE.
WE'LL HAVE A FUTURE PRESENTATION ABOUT ANCHOR INSTITUTIONS, AND THAT'S WHO WE ARE IN THIS COMMUNITY.
[00:05:01]
OUR ECONOMIC ASSETS TO REALLY ADDRESS SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DISPARITIES HERE IN DALLAS COUNTY FOR PEOPLE WHO LIVE AND WORK HERE AND REVITALIZE THE COMMUNITIES THAT WE SERVE.SO ADVANCEMENT IN THE PAST AND WE CAN MOVE ON TO OUR NEXT SLIDE.
IN ADVANCEMENT ACROSS THIS COUNTRY, YOU HEAR ADVANCEMENT MAINLY IN FOUR YEAR INSTITUTIONS, BUT DEFINITELY IN TWO YEARS AS WELL HAS TRADITIONALLY BEEN A VERY FOCUSED TOPIC AND IT WAS FUNDRAISING AND IT WAS SPECIAL EVENTS AND IT MIGHT BE MARKETING.
AND THAT'S HOW PEOPLE THINK ABOUT ADVANCEMENT, THAT THAT'S NOT HOW WE THINK ABOUT IT.
AND I THINK IT'S CHANGING IN THE WAY THAT PEOPLE THINK ABOUT IT.
ACROSS THIS COUNTRY, TEACHING IS ONLY ONE OF THE MISSIONS OF THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
IT IS MULTIPLE DEPARTMENTS ALL WORKING TOWARDS THAT ADVANCEMENT STRATEGY, COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, ALUMNI CONNECTEDNESS, FEDERAL AND STATE FUNDING. SO RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES AND CIVIC PARTNERSHIPS.
IT'S BUILDING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITH EMPLOYERS, WITH SMALL BUSINESSES, WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS AND INSTITUTIONS HERE AND FAR BEYOND THAT CAN REALLY HELP US CREATE ECONOMIC MOBILITY IN DALLAS COUNTY AND ENSURING THAT FUNDING IS AVAILABLE FOR THESE PROGRAMS BEYOND WHAT WE HAVE AS AN INSTITUTION THROUGH OUR NORMAL FUNDING CYCLES.
SO SEEKING PHILANTHROPIC FUNDS, SEEKING ADDITIONAL FEDERAL AND STATE RESOURCES THROUGH PUBLIC GRANTS, WORKING WITH CORPORATE PARTNERS WHO WOULD AWARD US DOLLARS FOR SPECIFIC REASONS AND PURPOSES.
AND WE ARE DOING ALL OF THAT THROUGH OUR OFFICE FOR ADVANCEMENT TODAY.
SO WE ARE ALSO YOU CAN GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE THINKING ABOUT THIS IS A LITTLE BIT OF THE SAME KIND OF WHAT I JUST TALKED ABOUT, WHY WE DO THIS, BUT WE ARE ALSO VERY MUCH WORKING TOGETHER ACROSS DALLAS COLLEGE.
IT'S NOT JUST THIS OFFICE, IT'S FOCUSED ON THESE SOLUTIONS AND HOW WE DO IT.
IT'S WORKFORCE AND ADVANCEMENT IN A STUDENT SUCCESS.
IT IS THE ACADEMIC SIDE AND ALL OUR PARTNERS IN THE SCHOOLS.
WE CAN'T DO ANY OF THIS WORK IF OUR OPERATIONAL AREAS DON'T SUPPORT THE WORK.
SO HE'S BEEN HERE JUST A JUST A SHORT TIME AND I'LL LET HIM TALK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT HIMSELF.
I'M GOING TO BE THE FIRST PERSON TO MOVE OUT OF THE CHAIR AND MOVE SOMEBODY ELSE IN.
AND WE'LL CONTINUE TO MUSICAL CHAIRS THROUGHOUT THIS PRESENTATION.
THANK YOU. VERY WELCOME TO US. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
SORRY THEY PUT THE TALL GUY IN FRONT OF THE POWERPOINT.
HOPEFULLY I CAN SEE SEE YOU OVER ME OR THROUGH ME, BUT I JUST IN FRONT OF HIM.
ASSOCIATE VICE CHANCELLOR OF INNOVATION BUSINESS STRATEGY.
I JUST WANTED TO KIND OF GIVE YOU A QUICK BACKGROUND, THE BACKGROUND ON WHO I AM.
I COME FROM HOUSTON, SO I ACTUALLY MOVED HERE IN JANUARY.
I'VE REALLY ENJOYED DALLAS SO FAR, SO THANK YOU, DALLAS, FOR THE WARM WELCOME MY CAREER HAS SPANNED.
I WAS WORKING ON AN UNDEVELOPED DRILLING WELL, WHICH WAS THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN THE NORTH SEA.
I'VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK ON THREE DIFFERENT PROGRAMS WHERE WE TOOK CONCEPTS AND BUILT PRODUCTS AND TOOK THEM OUT TO MARKET AND HAVE DONE THAT IN A INDUSTRY THAT MAYBE NECESSARILY ISN'T THE QUICKEST TO ADAPT TO NEW TECHNOLOGY.
AND THEN ABOUT SEVEN YEARS AGO, I STARTED MY OWN SMALL BUSINESS AND ON GAS AND EXIT THAT THIS SUMMER AND HAD THE OPPORTUNITY WITH WITH PIPER TO WORK ON INNOVATION AND BUSINESS STRATEGY FOR DALLAS COLLEGE, WHICH I'M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT IN THAT.
[00:10:06]
AND THE OPPORTUNITIES HERE ARE REALLY LIMITLESS WITH THE WITH THE SUPPORT THAT WE HAVE.AND I'LL TALK JUST A LITTLE BIT ABOUT.
THE. KIND OF THE VIEW OF INNOVATION IN BUSINESS STRATEGY, THE WAY I SEE IT.
NECESSITY IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION.
I THINK PIPER KIND OF ALREADY EXPLAINED THIS.
THE SAME THING HAPPENED IN THE WORKFORCE WITH HOW COMPANIES HAVE TO INTERACT WITH THEIR EMPLOYEES.
AND I THINK SOME OF THE THINGS WE'RE GOING TO WORK ON IS BEING INTENTIONAL IN HOW WE LOOK AT EMERGING MARKETS AND DIFFERENT INDUSTRIES. AND THIS IS GOING TO BE SOMETHING WHERE WE WORK WITH THE NIELS GROUP A LOT, A LOT WITH THE LABOR MARKET, INTELLIGENCE, UNDERSTANDING WHAT JOBS ARE GOING TO BE CREATED, WHAT JOBS WE NEED TO LOOK FOR IN THE FUTURE SO THAT WE CAN CREATE CERTAIN PLANS AND SYSTEMS TO HAVE A WORKFORCE THAT IS PREPARED TO MEET THE FUTURE NEEDS OF A POOR EMPLOYER INSTEAD OF THE CURRENT NEEDS OF EMPLOYERS.
AND IF YOU JUST KIND OF LOOK AT THE QUICK INNOVATION MATRIX THAT'S ON THE RIGHT, I THINK CURRENTLY WE KIND OF WORK WITH A LOT OF THE COMPANIES THAT ARE STAYING IN THE SUSTAINING AND INCREMENTAL PORTION OF THAT GRAPH WHERE THERE'S LOW RISK, BUT THE SOCIAL IMPACT IS SMALL AND WE KIND OF WANT TO MOVE OVER TO THE DISRUPTIVE AND RADICAL SIDE AS WELL, WHERE WE'RE TAKING A LITTLE MORE RISK.
WE'RE WORKING WITH COMPANIES THAT ARE WILLING TO TAKE A LITTLE MORE RISK, BUT PREPARING THEM, PREPARING THE WORKFORCE SO THAT THEY CAN HAVE CAREERS THAT ARE GOING TO BE LONG STANDING AND NOT OBSOLETE IN A FEW YEARS.
BUT I'LL LET GEORGE SORT OF TAKE IT FROM HERE, BECAUSE HE'S WORKING ON SOME OF THESE INITIATIVES WHERE PEOPLE ARE WORKING ON INNOVATIVE PROJECTS AND AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES.
YOU'LL HAVE ME THE SLIDE MOVER HERE WHEN WE GO THROUGH THE SLIDES.
ONE OF OUR TEAM MEMBERS SAID, WELL, CAN YOU GIVE US AN EXAMPLE OF HOW DALLAS COLLEGE HAS TAKEN A RELATIVELY HIGH RISK AND GOT A HIGH IMPACT? THE FIRST THING THAT CAME TO MY MIND IN THIS PROJECT, SOME OF YOU MIGHT REMEMBER BEING OUT.
AND WE WERE WE PROPOSED THAT WE WERE AWARDED THE GRANT TO START TO DO THAT.
BUT IN THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPING THAT, EVEN IN THE HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY AND SOME COLLEAGUES OF MINE IN OTHER COLLEGES AND INSTITUTIONS SAID, YOU GUYS ARE CRAZY, YOU'RE GOING TO TRY TO OVERLAY APPRENTICESHIP IN HEALTH CARE.
BUT BECAUSE OF THE EXCELLENT RELATIONSHIPS THAT DALLAS COLLEGE HAD WITH EVERY SINGLE HEALTH CARE ORGANIZATION HERE IN DALLAS AND DALLAS COUNTY, WE FELT LIKE WE HAD A FULL WHEEL OF SPOKES IN THAT HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY AND THAT WE COULD PULL IT OFF.
EVEN IF WE LOST A STROKE OR TWO, WE COULD STILL PULL IT OFF.
WE'VE GOT OVER 3500, ALMOST 4000 APPRENTICES IN THE HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY.
QUITE HONESTLY, THEY TOOK TO IT LIKE A DUCK TO WATER AND ARE ANXIOUS NOT ONLY TO IMPLEMENT IT HERE IN DALLAS, BUT TO TAKE SOME OF THEIR MODELS IN THE CASE OF HCA MEDICAL CITY NATIONWIDE.
SO WE'RE VERY, VERY PROUD OF THAT PROJECT.
BUT IT'S AN EXAMPLE OF WHERE WE TAKE A LITTLE BIT OF A RISK AND WE GET AN EXTREMELY HIGH RETURN.
[00:15:06]
AND AND WHERE WE SEE IT GOING IN THE FUTURE FOR SUSTAINABILITY AND ON.BUT TODAY WE ARE WE'RE HERE TO TALK ABOUT AUTOMATED VEHICLES.
WE THOUGHT WE'D TAKE THE APPROACH OF EXPLAINING A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE SITUATION IN THIS SUB SECTOR OF THE TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY AND TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY THAT THAT SITUATION AFFORDS US DALLAS COLLEGE AND ALL OF OUR PARTNERS.
SO WHAT IS THE SITUATION? WELL, THE SITUATION IN THE TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY.
SO THIS YOU COULD DO IT MANUALLY FOR ME.
WE KNOW THAT TODAY WE ARE LIVING WITH THIS VERY SEVERE SUPPLY CHAIN INTERRUPTION THAT IS DRAMATICALLY AFFECTING AND IMPACTING EVERYBODY'S LIFE AND NOT IN A POSITIVE WAY.
COVID AND THE PANDEMIC GET A LOT OF CREDIT FOR THAT DISRUPTION.
BUT THE FACT IS TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY LEADERS SAW SOMETHING LIKE THIS COMING YEARS AGO.
WHY? WELL, ONE OF THE REASONS WHY IS IS CONSUMERISM.
IT'S UP. WE BUY A LOT OF STUFF AND THAT STUFF HAS TO BE CARRIED BY TRAINS AND TRUCKS AND.
SO SO THAT WE CAN GET IT AND WITH THE DEMAND FOR THOSE TYPES OF SERVICES UP.
THEY STARTED TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH GETTING ENOUGH WORKFORCE, GETTING ENOUGH TALENT TO COME IN TO ACTUALLY DRIVE, TRANSPORT AND DELIVER THOSE THOSE GOODS, THOSE GOODS THAT WE NEED. SO FOR A LONG TIME NOW, THERE'S BEEN A TREMENDOUS SHORTAGE FOR CDL OPERATORS.
IN FACT, IT DEPENDS ON THE TIME OF THE YEAR AND WHICH WHICH STUDY AND WHICH NUMBERS YOU LOOK AT.
BUT CDL OPERATOR IS ALWAYS RIGHT UP THERE AT THE TOP OF.
OF JOB OPENINGS IN THE NATION.
IN FACT, BEN STEIN GAVE US A NUMBER.
RIGHT NOW, TODAY, THERE'S ABOUT 50,000 JOB OPENINGS IN THE TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY.
SO THEY SAW THIS COMING AND IT'S DEFINITELY STILL PART OF THAT SUPPLY CHAIN.
EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, YOU HEAR THAT WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TRUCK DRIVERS TO BRING STUFF AROUND.
THE THE OTHER PART OF THE SITUATION IS THAT THE TECHNOLOGY NEEDED, NEEDED TO BE UPDATED AND AN UPGRADED INNOVATION NEEDS TO BE BROUGHT IN TO MAKE THINGS MORE EFFICIENT AND WORK BETTER.
SO WE'LL TALK ABOUT THAT IN JUST A MINUTE.
BUT THIS SITUATION, HOW HAS THE TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY RESPONDED? WELL, THE FIRST WAY IS TRY TO INCREASE THE MORE WORKFORCE.
LET'S TRY TO GET SOME MORE FOLKS IN.
AND THEN ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO DO THAT, TRIED AND TRUE METHOD INCREASE WAGES AND BENEFITS.
THE TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY HAS DONE THAT.
IF YOU'VE BEEN A CDL OPERATOR FOR A WHILE, GET SOME EXPERIENCE.
IT'S PRETTY EASY TO MAKE 100,000 OR MORE.
THAT'S ONE OF THE REASONS WHY WE CAN'T ATTRACT PEOPLE WITH THOSE KIND OF SALARIES.
PEOPLE DON'T LIKE BEING OUT THREE WEEKS OUT OF THE YEAR, DRIVING AROUND THE NATION.
THEY WANT TO BE THEY WANT TO BE HOME.
SO YOU GOT TO GET THE RIGHT PERSON.
BUT THEY HAVE DONE A LOT TO RAISE THE WAGES AND BENEFITS TO BRING PEOPLE INTO THAT INDUSTRY.
LIKE I MENTIONED BEFORE, IN WAREHOUSING, FOR EXAMPLE, THINK OF AMAZON, WHAT THEY HAVE DONE FOR WAREHOUSE AND WITH AUTOMATION, STRATEGIC LOCATION, ETC., LET ALONE THE DELIVERY PIECE OF THAT AGAIN NEEDING CDL DRIVERS.
HE CAN GET SOMETHING DELIVERED FROM AMAZON IN 2 HOURS.
TEN YEARS AGO. WHO SAID THAT TO THE MAP? MY MOM LIVES IN RURAL GEORGIA.
SHE CAN GET THINGS IN TWO DAYS AND SHE'S AS HAPPY AS A LARK.
SO THEY'VE BEEN ABLE TO DO THAT EVEN WITH THESE SHORTAGES, BY UTILIZING INNOVATION, UPGRADING TECHNOLOGY TO TO THE BLEEDING EDGE IN WAREHOUSING.
WELL, THE SAME THING IS BEING DONE WITH TRANSPORTATION VEHICLES TO USING CUTTING BLEEDING EDGE TECHNOLOGY TO TO CHANGE THE WAY THAT LONG HAUL AND EVEN SHORT HAUL TRUCKING AND DELIVERY IS DONE.
[00:20:06]
THAT'S WHY WE'VE GOT AUTOMATED VEHICLES TODAY, AND THAT'S WHAT WE'RE WE'RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT.AND THAT LEAVES US WITH AN OPPORTUNITY.
WHAT CAN WE DO? WHAT? WHAT OPPORTUNITY IS THERE FOR DALLAS COLLEGE, FOR THE REGION, FOR STATE TAXES? FOR OUR PARTNERS? FOR EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS? WELL, THE OPPORTUNITY IS IS TO COME TOGETHER AND HELP THE SUBSECTOR OF AUTOMOTIVE OR AUTOMATED VEHICLES EXPAND THAT INNOVATION THAT WE WERE TALKING ABOUT, BUILD THAT WORKFORCE SO THAT THEY CAN DO WHAT THEY NEED TO DO TO MOVE PEOPLE, GOODS AND DATA IN THE MOST EFFICIENT WAY THAT THEY CAN.
THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US, BUT IT'S REALLY I KIND OF WANT TO EMPHASIZE IT.
IT'S REALLY A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY FOR DALLAS AND FOR THE REGION.
WIDEOUTS. WELL, LIKE THE SLIDE SAYS, LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.
WE GET I-30, EAST AND WEST, HIGH 35, NORTH AND SOUTH, 45, SOUTH TO THE COAST.
I-10 IS PROBABLY THE MOST TRAVELED CORRIDOR.
IT'S MOSTLY HOUSTON, BUT MOST THINGS ARE RIGHT HERE AND EASY TO ACCESS.
WE'VE GOT GOOD WEATHER, REALLY GOOD ROADS, AND WE'VE GOT A SUPPORTIVE LEGISLATURE.
THERE'S A LOT OF REGULATION IN THIS INDUSTRY, BUT THE STATE OF TEXAS HAS BEEN VERY FRIENDLY.
WE WANT TO BE SAFE. WE WANT TO KEEP PEOPLE SAFE.
WE WANT TO KEEP, KEEP YOU KNOW, THE EMPLOYEES SAY WE WANT SAFETY, BUT THE LEGISLATION IS BEING DONE SO THAT WE CAN HAVE THAT SAFETY, BUT ALSO IN A WAY THAT ENCOURAGES THE INDUSTRY TO BE ABLE TO HIRE PEOPLE, TO BE ABLE TO IMPLEMENT THIS NEW AND CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY WHERE OTHER PLACES MAY BE A LITTLE FEARFUL OF IT.
I GO AHEAD AND SAY THIS NOW AND MAY HAVE IT LATER, MY NOTES.
BUT I DON'T KNOW IF YOU KNOW THIS.
BUT RIGHT NOW ON IE 35 NORTH AND SOUTH TODAY THERE ARE LIVE LOADS OF FREIGHT BEING CARRIED BY AUTONOMOUSLY DRIVEN TRUCKS RIGHT NOW AND ALMOST EVERY DAY.
I'M GOING TO LET CLINT SPEAK TO MORE ABOUT THAT A LITTLE BIT, BECAUSE THIS IS A SURPRISE.
BUT THEY'RE NOT BIG, UGLY TRUCKS.
AND BUT THEY'RE LOADED WITH TECHNOLOGY AND IT'S HAPPENING EVERY DAY.
SO TEXAS HAS BEEN FRIENDLY TO THAT.
THAT'S ONE OF THE REASONS WHY WHY BUSINESSES SUCH AS PLANTS AND KODIAK.
DAN IS WITH US. I THINK ONLINE HERE ARE MOVING TO TEXAS AGAIN.
AND THAT'S WHY WE'RE. ALL RIGHT.
SO SITUATION, OPPORTUNITY, LET'S TALK MORE IN DETAIL ABOUT THE SOLUTION.
THE SOLUTION IS FOR US TO BRING OUR NATIONAL INDUSTRY PARTNERS, OUR GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES, OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS AND OUR EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS, NOT JUST REGIONALLY HERE, BUT BUT NATIONALLY TOGETHER, TO BE ABLE TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE INDUSTRY SECTOR.
WE NEED TO AND I'M ALMOST GOING TO READ THIS.
WE CAN ALSO WORK WITH THE INDUSTRY TO CREATE A PIPELINE OF NEW HIRES.
ALSO, FROM THOSE COMPRESSION PLANNING SESSIONS, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT WE ARE PART OF THE SOLUTION AND OUR PART IN IT IS THAT WE CAN ALIGN AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND TRAINING WITH INDUSTRY EXPECTATIONS.
THAT'S THE PART THAT DALLAS COMMUNITY COLLEGE OR DALLAS COLLEGE CAN DO IN DOING.
AND THAT'S WHAT. TO TALK SOME MORE DETAIL ABOUT ALL OF THOSE THINGS.
WE'D LIKE TO SAY THAT WE DID HAVE THOSE TWO COMPRESSION PLANNING SESSIONS ABOUT A YEAR AGO.
ONE WAS APRIL 20, A YEAR OF 2021.
THE NEXT ONE WAS APRIL 18, LED BY MARY BERNBACH AND HER TEAM.
[00:25:10]
BEST THAT I'VE EVER SEEN IN A COMPRESSOR PLANNING SESSION THAT I'VE ATTENDED TO.SO WE'VE GOT A REALLY GOOD FOUNDATION.
PIPER MENTIONED THAT FOUNDATION EARLIER AND THAT'S PART OF WE'VE GOT A GOOD FOUNDATION TO BUILD THIS PROJECT ON TO HELP PEOPLE GET JOBS, TO HAVE COMPANIES GROW, ETC..
WITH THAT, I'D LIKE TO I THINK I WAS GOING TO READ THIS SLIDE HERE, WHICH I NORMALLY DO, BUT THIS IS REALLY THE SOLUTION. THE AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE ECOSYSTEM OF WHICH WE ARE PART HAS TO COME TOGETHER TO ADDRESS THE TALENT SHORTAGE THROUGH TARGETED, WELL DEVELOPED WORKFORCE PROGRAMS, ADDRESS THE REGULATORY AND SAFETY CONCERNS, AND ACQUIRE THE FUNDING TO GET THIS STARTED.
AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT WE'RE DOING AND WHAT WE'RE HERE TO EXPLAIN TODAY.
SO THANK YOU FOR BRINGING IT INTO THE FUNDING.
YEAH, WE SURE ARE. SO I'M GOING TO TRY AGAIN.
I WANT TO PLAY A VIDEO HERE JUST A SECOND BY CONGRESSWOMAN EDDIE BERNICE JOHNSON.
SHE IS A SENIOR MEMBER OF THE US HOUSE COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE.
SHE VISITED WITH VANS COMPANY KODIAK, WHICH IS IN LANCASTER, TO GATHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE STATE OF THE INDUSTRY, INDUSTRY FROM INDUSTRY EXPERTS TO BE ABLE TO GO BACK AND MAKE SOME RECOMMENDATIONS ABOUT AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES TO THE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE.
SO THE CONGRESSWOMAN JOHNSON WAS HERE DECEMBER 16, 2021.
THE HOUSE HEARING ON AUTOMATED VEHICLES WAS FEBRUARY 22ND, 2022, JUST THIS YEAR.
AND WHAT I'D LIKE TO DO NEXT IS PLAY A LITTLE VIDEO THAT OF AT THE MEETING AND PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION TO HOW SHE MENTIONS DALLAS COLLEGE AND OUR AND OUR INDUSTRY PARTNERS.
AND TWO COMPANIES, KODIAK, ROBOTICS AND WAYMO, HAVE OPENED OPERATION HOMES IN MY DISTRICT, AND ANOTHER COMPANY, AURORA, EXPANDED INTO THE DALLAS-FORT WORTH AREA IN JUNE OF 2020, BRINGING HIGH QUALITY AND HIGH TECH JOBS TO MANY OF OUR CONSTITUENTS.
INDEED, THIS WAVE OF INVESTMENT IS DUE IN LARGE PART TO THE LEADERSHIP AND CLOSE COORDINATION DEMONSTRATED BY DALLAS COLLEGE, WHICH IS OUR COMMUNITY COLLEGE NETWORK, AND HAS A NORTH CENTRAL TEXAS COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENTS AND THE DALLAS REGIONAL CHAMBER, THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT, TEXAS TRANSPORTATION AND PUBLIC SAFETY AND DALLAS COLLEGE HAS BEEN THE LEADER IN CREATING THE WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT AT COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT.
FOCUS ON THE FUTURE TRANSPORTATION, IN PART FUELED BY $1 MILLION GRANTED FROM FARM TO DEVELOP A CURRICULUM FOR AID AND TRANSPORTATION TECH JOBS THROUGH A GRANT.
AND SHE WENT BACK WITH SOME REALLY, REALLY GOOD INFORMATION.
AND WE ARE. SHE MENTIONED THEIR NAMES.
THERE'S A KODIAK IS A COMPANY THAT HANDLES FREIGHT.
IN FACT, THEY'RE THE ONES I MENTIONED WITH LIVE FREIGHT ON 35.
RIGHT NOW, AURORA IS IN ARLINGTON.
ARLINGTON HAS A DEMONSTRATION PROJECT OF AUTOMATED VEHICLES CARRYING PASSENGERS THROUGH THE UT AREA.
A LITTLE BIT MORE ON THAT LATER.
BUT YEAH, CARRYING PASSENGERS IN IN AUTOMATED VEHICLES.
SO THEY'RE THEY'RE HERE TOO IN DALLAS AND PART OF OUR PROJECT ALSO.
[00:30:03]
AND THAT'S WHY WE'RE HERE TODAY TO BRING YOU GUYS UP TO SPEED ON THAT AND TO LET YOU KNOW A BIT ABOUT OUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE.SHE ALSO MENTIONED THE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN DALLAS COLLEGE CENTRAL NORTH CENTRAL TEXAS COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENTS AND THE DALLAS REGIONAL CHAMBER, ALONG WITH A LITTLE BIT OF FUNDING THAT'S AVAILABLE, WHICH WE'LL GET INTO HERE IN A MINUTE.
THE TECHNOLOGY CHANGES RAPIDLY.
IN FACT, YOU'VE PROBABLY HEARD ME REFER TO IT AS AUTOMATED VEHICLES AND AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES.
THE THIRD NAME, WHICH IS THE NEWEST OF THOSE THREE, IS CONNECTED AUTOMATED VEHICLE CAB FOR SHORT.
SO IF YOU DIDN'T PICK UP THAT, I WAS REFERRING TO THIS TECHNOLOGY BY THREE NAMES, THAT'S THE CASE.
SO THE NAME OF OUR TEAM RIGHT NOW IS DALLAS COLLEGE AUTOMATED VEHICLE INITIATIVE PROJECT.
WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON IT, LIKE I SAID, SINCE 2019 AND PUT A LOT OF OUR PARTNERS TOGETHER.
WHAT I'D LIKE TO DO NOW IS ASK DAN GOFF, THE HEAD OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS, TO COME IN AND GIVE US A LITTLE BIT OF THE SOLUTION AS SEEN FROM THE OUR INDUSTRY PARTNERS PERSPECTIVE.
CAN YOU HEAR ME OKAY? I THINK THERE'S A BIT OF AN ECHO.
UM. BUT SO MAYBE A THUMBS UP IF YOU CAN HEAR ME.
GREAT. OKAY. SO I'M DANIEL GOFF.
I'M THE HEAD OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS AT KODIAK ROBOTICS AS AS WE AND I'LL TAKE CONTROL OVER WHAT I CAN SWITCH SEISMIC SIDE WE WE ARE WORKING ON I'LL ADD ONE MORE NAME TO THE MIX.
WE ARE ABOUT FOUR YEARS OLD AS A COMPANY WITH OUR WERE INITIALLY FOUNDED IN THE BAY AREA.
BUT ABOUT A YEAR AFTER WE WERE FOUNDED WE WERE STARTING TO THINK ABOUT WHERE WE WANTED TO BASE OUR OPERATIONS AS AS KIND OF GROWING INTO BEING A TRUCKING COMPANY AND WORKING WITH PARTNERS TO DELIVER FREIGHT.
AND WE VERY QUICKLY NARROWED DOWN INTO INTO THE DALLAS-FORT WORTH AREA AND FOR ALL THE REASONS I THINK WE TALKED ABOUT ON ON THE PREVIOUS SLIDES, I THINK DALLAS HAS BEEN A FANTASTIC HOME FOR US AND WHERE OUR OFFICE AND I KNOW A FEW OF YOU HAVE HAD THE CHANCE TO COME OUT AND VISIT, BUT OUR OFFICE IS IN LANCASTER, RIGHT BY DALLAS COLLEGE'S CEDAR VALLEY CAMPUS.
AND I THINK WE WERE THE FIRST COMPANY IN THE SPACE TO LOCATE IN DALLAS.
AND I THINK I THINK THAT'S BEEN A REALLY FANTASTIC DECISION FOR US.
AS YOU CAN SEE, THIS IS THIS IS A LOT OF OUR TRUCKS.
WE THIS IS THIS TRUCK IN PARTICULAR.
THE TRUCKS HAVE TWO PARTS, THE TRACTOR, WHICH IS THE FRONT AND THE TRAILER WHICH IS THE BACK.
THIS TRAILER WAS WE PUT SELF DRIVING TRUCK ON THE SIDE FOR THIS PHOTOSHOOT, BUT GENERALLY SPEAKING WE DON'T DRIVE AROUND WITH A BIG THING THAT SAYS SELF DRIVING TRUCK ON THE SIDE AND OTHER THAN THAT IT OPERATES LIKE AND LOOKS LIKE A REGULAR TRUCK.
AND THAT'S I THINK THAT'S TO SOME EXTENT BY BY DESIGN.
SO I THINK OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH DALLAS COLLEGE REALLY BEGAN WITH WITH REALLY RIGHT AS WE WERE RIGHT AS WE FIRST CAME INTO THE DALLAS AREA, WE WERE CONNECTED WITH KISHA AND AND MANY OTHERS ON THE TEAM AND STARTED THINKING.
SO AT THE TIME WHEN WE FIRST LOCATED IN DALLAS, MOST TESTING IN THIS INDUSTRY WAS HAPPENING IN ARIZONA AND PIMA COLLEGE IN TUCSON HAD DEVELOPED SOME PROGRAMS AROUND SORT OF TRAINING PEOPLE FOR FOR WORKING IN THIS INDUSTRY.
AND WE SORT OF SAT DOWN AND SAID, HOW CAN WE BRING SOME OF THESE THINGS TO TO THE DALLAS AREA? SINCE THEN, THE INDUSTRY HAS GROWN A TON.
I MEAN, WE'VE GONE FROM ABOUT 12 TO 15 PEOPLE, OVER 40 PEOPLE IN THE LAST YEAR, YOU KNOW, AND I THINK AND I THINK OUR COMPETITORS HAVE DONE THE SAME OR MORE.
[00:35:05]
AND I THINK THAT'S THAT'S SET TO GROW EVEN FURTHER.THEY'VE GOT A GREAT QUALITY OF LIFE.
THEY WE HAVE LIKE SORT OF TECH COMPANY PERKS.
SO, YOU KNOW, ALL THE THINGS PAY VACATION WHICH TRUCK DRIVERS TYPICALLY DON'T DON'T HAVE KNOW AND I THINK PART OF THE SORT OF PROMISE OF THIS TECHNOLOGY IS BEING ABLE TO CREATE TRANSPORTATION JOBS AND TRUCKING JOBS WHERE PEOPLE CAN CAN COME CAN COME HOME EVERY NIGHT AND NOT BE AT THE ON ON THE ROAD FOR WEEKS AND WEEKS AT A TIME.
SO I THINK WE I THINK WE HAVE A REALLY SORT OF CORE TEAM THAT HASN'T TURNED OVER A TON BECAUSE PEOPLE REALLY LIKE WORKING AT KODIAK AND LIKE THE JOBS THAT, THAT, THAT, THAT WE'RE DOING OR THE JOBS WE'RE CREATING IN, IN THE DALLAS AREA.
I MUST ADMIT, I FORGOT HOW TO TAKE CONTROL OVER THE PRESENTATION.
SO IF CAN GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE OR MAYBE SEE ME CONTROL, THAT WOULD BE THAT WOULD BE GREAT.
SO SO WHY DON'T I TAKE A QUICK OPPORTUNITY WHEN WE TALK ABOUT AN AUTONOMOUS OR SELF-DRIVING OR WHATEVER, WHERE DO YOU WANT TO USE WHAT THAT REALLY MEANS IN OUR CASE? SO FOR US AND FOR MOST COMPANIES IN THE INDUSTRY, THE FOCUS IS REALLY ON THOSE LONG HAUL ROUTES.
AND THEY'RE KIND OF ARE TWO REASONS FOR THIS.
ONE IS KIND OF THE WORKFORCE REASON THAT, YOU KNOW, WE SORT OF TALK ABOUT DRIVER SHORTAGE, THE NUMBERS OF OF OF WE'VE ALL KIND OF FELT THE IMPACTS OF THOSE OF THE DRIVER SHORTAGE OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS.
THOSE ARE REALLY DIFFICULT JOBS AND THEY'RE NOT VERY SUSTAINABLE JOBS.
UM, YOU KNOW THAT IT'S HARD TO KEEP PEOPLE FOR.
SO OUR, OUR VIEW IS TO BASICALLY REALLY FOCUS ON THAT THOSE LONG HAUL MILES AND LEAVE THE FIRST AND LAST MILE FIRST MILE PICKUP AND LAST MILE DELIVERY TO TRADITIONAL DRIVERS AND HAVE PLACES WHERE WE CAN SORT OF SWITCH OFF THOSE LOADS CLOSE TO THE HIGHWAY.
AND SO THAT BOTH MEANS WE CAN CREATE KIND OF MORE OF THE MORE SUSTAINABLE JOBS.
BUT YOU DON'T GET ROUTINE, YOU KNOW, BIKES AND PEDESTRIANS AND DOGS AND KIDS CHASING FOOTBALLS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET THE WAY YOU MIGHT IN ANY OF YOUR NEIGHBORHOODS.
AND WHEN YOU SEE THOSE THINGS, IT'S REALLY OBVIOUS WHAT YOU DO.
YOU HIT THE BRAKES AND IT'S MUCH SORT OF EASIER TO TO TO TRAIN A COMPUTER TO DO THAT KIND OF THING.
SO I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE ANY QUESTIONS, ANYTHING THAT POPS UP IN PEOPLE'S MINDS.
I KNOW THERE'S A BIT OF AN ECHO, BUT WANT TO MAKE SURE CAN ANSWER QUESTIONS AS THEY THEY POP UP.
BUT THE LONG HAUL LIVE BY THE AUTOMATED VEHICLE AND THE PICKUP AND DELIVERY.
THE FIRST MILE AND LAST MILE, SO TO SPEAK, ARE THE TRADITIONAL DRIVING.
YES, THAT'S THE THAT'S THAT'S KIND OF THE MODEL THAT WE'RE WORKING TOWARDS.
AND WE THINK OUR OUR TARGET IS TO DO OUR FIRST DRIVERLESS DELIVERIES ON THAT LONG HAUL IN ABOUT THE 2024 TIMEFRAME.
AND I SHOULD SAY THAT I SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED THIS EARLIER.
WE DO WORK WITH A RANGE OF COMMERCIAL PARTNERS AND ARE DELIVERING FREIGHT EVERY DAY BETWEEN FROM OUR HUB IN DALLAS TO HOUSTON, SAN ANTONIO, AUSTIN, OKLAHOMA CITY.
AND LATER THIS YEAR WE'LL START DAILY DELIVERY TO ATLANTA AS WELL.
SO THIS IS ALL HAPPENING WITH A SAFETY DRIVER BEHIND THE WHEEL, WITH A TRAINED COMMERCIAL TRUCK DRIVER WHO'S IN THE TRUCKS EVERY DAY, KIND OF MONITORING THE SYSTEM AND MAKING SURE THAT IT'S DOING WHAT IT'S SUPPOSED TO DO.
BUT THIS IS A REAL TECHNOLOGY THAT WE AND OUR COMPETITORS ARE USING WITH CUSTOMERS EVERY DAY.
MY VIEW FUELS THE VEHICLES ON THE ROAD.
[00:40:04]
SO RIGHT NOW, THE SAFETY DRIVER, THE THE TRUCK DRIVER WHO'S MAINTAINING CONTROL FUELS THE VEHICLES.AND I THINK THAT ALSO GOES TO SOME OF THE JOBS THAT WE'RE LOOKING TO CREATE IS IN THIS IN THIS PICTURE THAT YOU SEE ON ON THE SLIDE, THERE'S KIND OF THESE CIRCLES BETWEEN THE FIRST MILE PICKUP AND LAST MILE DELIVERY.
AND WE'RE WE'RE SORT OF WORKING TO DEVELOP A MODEL FOR TRANSFER HUBS OR SPOT WHERE VEHICLES CAN BE MAINTAINED, WHERE THE LOADS CAN BE SWITCHED, WHERE THEY CAN BE INSPECTED.
YOU KNOW, A LOT OF THE SORT OF MAKING SURE THAT THE TECHNICIAN KIND OF LIKE WORKING ON A TRUCK JOBS, I THINK IN GENERAL, THEY'RE THEY'RE WE'RE GOING TO NEED A LITTLE BIT MORE OF THAT RATHER THAN THERE IS GOING TO BE A LOT OF NEED TO SORT OF MAINTAIN THESE VEHICLES THAT GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND WHAT'S HAPPENING TODAY, LIKE A FLAT TIRE OR A BLOWN HOSE.
AN AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE DOESN'T HAVE SOMEBODY TO HOP OUT AND DO SOMETHING THAT Y'ALL HAVE, DON'T HAVE MAINTENANCE TEAMS, ALL THAT ARE KIND OF LIKE READY TO GO ON CALL WHEN SOMETHING LIKE THAT HAPPENS.
THEY'VE ALREADY PLANNED FOR THAT.
SO IS THAT NOT THE PLAN BY THE TIME YOU GET TO THE FULL AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE.
YEAH. I MEAN I THINK PART OF THE ANSWER HERE.
YEAH. IS, IS HAVING THOSE PARTNERS WE HAVE A ONE OF OUR INVESTORS IS BRIDGESTONE, THE BIG TIRE COMPANY AND THEY DO MAINTENANCE SERVICES AND AND THINGS LIKE THAT AS WELL.
SO HAVING PEOPLE WHO CAN RESCUE THE TRUCK WHO ARE CLOSE BY IF SOMETHING WERE TO HAPPEN ON THE ROAD, IS IS KIND OF PART OF THE PART OF THE OPERATIONS HERE AND PART OF WHERE I THINK THERE'S THERE'S REALLY SORT OF INTERESTING JOB OPPORTUNITIES HERE.
BUT I THINK PART OF THE THE OPERATIONAL MODEL IS TO MAKE SURE THAT THE VEHICLES ARE MAINTAINED TO A REALLY HIGH STANDARD AND SO THAT SOME OF THESE THINGS WILL KNOW WHERE THE TRUCKS ARE, ARE TIRES ARE LESS LIKELY TO KIND OF BLOW, HOPEFULLY, BECAUSE WE'RE GOING TO TAKE VERY, VERY GOOD CARE OF THEM IN A WAY THAT THAT MOST BUT NOT ALL PEOPLE IN THE TRUCKING TRUCKING INDUSTRY DO TODAY.
SO IT DOUBLES THE JOBS? IT DOES, YEAH.
AND SO THE THE LEFT SEAT DRIVER THERE IS THERE AS A SAFETY DRIVER, THE SOFTWARE IS NOT PERFECT.
IT'S STILL BEING PERFECTED, BUT THEY'RE THERE JUST IN CASE.
SO SOMETHING DID GO WRONG OR WHATEVER.
THEY'RE THERE TO TAKE OVER IN CASE THE SOFTWARE DID.
YES, TECHNOLOGY IS AMAZING, THOUGH.
BUT THE SAFETY DRIVERS THERE JUST IN CASE, SO YOU'LL SEE THEM ON THE ROAD.
WE'RE GOING TO GET INTO THAT, TOO.
THEY'RE MONITORING THE TECHNOLOGY AND THEREFORE, SOME OF THE JOB OPPORTUNITIES ARE WELL.
AND I RECOGNIZE I MEAN, I'M THINKING ABOUT THESE ALL DAY AND AND EVERYTHING.
I THINK I GET THAT THAT SOME PEOPLE MAY FIND THIS IDEA MORE THAN A DRIVERLESS OR EVENTUALLY DRIVERLESS VEHICLE, £80,000 VEHICLE WITH NOBODY INSIDE IS SOMETHING THAT MAY.
LEAVE SOME PEOPLE WITH, LET'S SAY, A LITTLE BIT OF TREPIDATION.
AND I THINK THAT'S A BIG PART OF MY JOB.
I THINK WE HAVE NEVER HAD A BAD MEETING, LIKE WHEN PEOPLE SEE THIS TECHNOLOGY AND KICK THE
[00:45:07]
TIRES AND LITERALLY AND FIGURATIVELY AND SORT OF UNDERSTAND HOW WE THINK ABOUT SAFETY AND HOW WE THINK ABOUT HOW TO DEPLOY THIS KIND OF TECHNOLOGY.NO ONE HAS EVER WALKED AWAY FROM THAT, EVER SAYING, I DON'T KNOW.
I DON'T I DON'T BELIEVE IN THIS.
BUT WE HAVE 15 DIFFERENT SENSORS THAT ARE ALL LOOKING AT THE ROAD TEN TIMES A SECOND, UPDATING THE PLAN FOR FOR WHERE TO DRIVE BASED ON THAT INFORMATION, JUST SIMPLY DOING THINGS THAT HUMAN BEINGS CAN'T DO.
YOU KNOW, IT TAKES US SECONDS TO SHIFT OUR ATTENTION ON THE ROAD.
WE CAN'T MONITOR MULTIPLE OBJECTS AT THE SAME TIME.
YOU KNOW, BASICALLY PEOPLE WHEN THEY.
BUT EVERY FIVE OR 6 SECONDS BETWEEN DIFFERENT OBJECTS WHEN THEY'RE DRIVING AND AND THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU WHEN YOU DRIVE HOME TODAY ABOUT HOW HOW YOU'RE MONITORING DIFFERENT ITEMS ON THE ROAD.
AND AND THINK ABOUT HOW A COMPUTER CAN TAKE ALL THIS INFORMATION IN AND PROCESS IT, YOU KNOW, THE BLINK OF AN EYE, I THINK I THINK PEOPLE PEOPLE SORT OF GET IT FROM A SAFETY PERSPECTIVE PRETTY QUICKLY.
SORRY. WHAT IS THE SIZE OF YOUR FLEET? OH, WE HAVE ABOUT 20 TRUCKS ALL IN TODAY.
BUT I THINK THEY'RE ALL LOCAL, NOT OVER THE ROAD.
THERE. WE HAVE A FEW TEST TRUCKS IN CALIFORNIA, BUT MOSTLY THEY'RE IN THERE IN DALLAS.
AND THEN WHO PROVIDES YOU TRAINING NOW? DO YOU ALL DO THAT IN-HOUSE? WE DO IT IN-HOUSE.
AND WE'VE BEEN SORT OF TALKING ABOUT HOW TO DO CREATE SORT OF PROGRAMS WITH DALLAS COLLEGE.
BUT AS WE STANDARD, THERE WILL BE MORE MORE THERE'LL BE OPPORTUNITIES TO STANDARDIZE IT MORE AND AND STANDARDIZE IT ACROSS COMPANIES AS WELL. SO I'M CERTAIN THIS IS A GROWTH INDUSTRY AND THAT'S WHY YOU'RE TRYING TO GET IN EARLY IN TERMS OF THE TRAINING AND DEVELOPING THE PROGRAMS, ETC..
ABSOLUTELY. PLEASE CONTINUE, DANIEL.
SURE. I THINK. READY TO GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE.
AND I THINK THAT'S THAT'S THE MOST CRITICAL THING IN IN ANY TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY.
AND, YOU KNOW, TAKE IT OUT ON THE ROAD AND ON OTHER PEOPLE.
WE ACTUALLY I WAS JUST IN AN INTERESTING CONVERSATION ABOUT RIGHT NOW WE WE WHERE WE BRAKE ON A DOWNHILL INSTEAD OF LETTING THE TRUCK SORT OF GO TWO OR THREE MILES ABOVE THE SPEED LIMIT. AND WHETHER OR NOT WE SHOULD BE DOING THAT, WHICH I THINK IS KIND OF AN INTERESTING PHILOSOPHICAL QUESTION, KNOW WE DON'T SPEED I'VE GOTTEN A FEW SORT OF CALLS OR TEXT MESSAGES FROM FRIENDS SAYING, YOU KNOW, I JUST SAW ONE OF YOUR TRUCKS ON THE ROAD AND I KIND OF TRIED TO TO FOLLOW IT FOR A BIT, BUT I GOT I GOT TIRED OF FOLLOWING THE SPEED LIMIT AND I EVENTUALLY I DROVE AROUND IT AND THEY'RE VERY BORING DRIVERS.
I THINK WE'VE SEEN THAT THIS TECHNOLOGY IS REALLY NEEDED IN THE INDUSTRY GIVEN SORT OF THE THE WORKFORCE CHALLENGES AND THE SUPPLY CHAIN CHALLENGES AND AND REALLY THE QUALITY OF LIFE CHALLENGES.
I MEAN, HOW WE WHAT WE ASK TRUCK DRIVERS TO DO IN TERMS OF BEING OVER THE ROAD FOR WEEKS AT A TIME.
I THINK A COUPLE OTHER THINGS THAT PEOPLE DON'T REALLY THINK ABOUT.
SO OUR TRUCKS GET ABOUT 10% BETTER GAS MILEAGE WHEN THEY'RE DRIVEN AUTONOMOUSLY THAN IN THEN WHEN THEY'RE HUMAN DRIVEN, WHICH IS A A HUGE DIFFERENCE.
THE TRUCKING INDUSTRY USES A TON OF DIESEL.
SO YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW MUCH GAS THESE THINGS BURN OR HOW MUCH DIESEL THESE THINGS BURN.
[00:50:05]
AND I THINK THAT EFFICIENCY IS IS REALLY IMPORTANT.IN FACT, THEY THEY LIKE THREE IN THE MORNING IN SOME WAYS.
I THINK PEOPLE NOBODY LOVES DRIVING NEXT TO AN 18 WHEELER ON ON ON THE HIGHWAY.
AND, YOU KNOW, AND I THINK PEOPLE WILL LIKE THAT.
DOES THAT INCLUDE THE SALARIES OF THESE DRIVERS? SO TODAY WE PAY MORE THAN MOST IN THE INDUSTRY.
UM, YOU KNOW, I CAN'T SAY ALL, BUT AGAIN, THESE ARE THESE ARE GREAT JOBS AND THERE ARE ALWAYS GOING TO BE THOSE THE NEED FOR THOSE DRIVING JOBS, BOTH FOR FIRST AND LAST MILE AND FOR KIND OF TESTING AND BURNING IN THE TRUCK.
MOST OF THE COST SAVINGS IS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS TECHNOLOGY ACTUALLY ARE ABOUT UTILIZATION.
SO A TRUCK TODAY, YOU KNOW, TRUCKS ARE VERY EXPENSIVE AND RIGHT NOW THEY GET USED.
IT KIND OF DEPENDS ON WHICH SEGMENT OF THE TRUCKING INDUSTRY, BUT THEY GET USED BETWEEN EIGHT AND AN ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM 11 HOURS A DAY BY BY LAW, THEY GET USED 11 HOURS A DAY UNLESS YOU'RE YOU CAN YOU CAN DO WHAT'S CALLED TEAM DRIVING WHERE YOU HAVE TWO PEOPLE AND THEY'RE SWITCHING OFF.
BUT GENERALLY SPEAKING, THEY GET USED NOT JUST LESS, BUT WELL LESS THAN HALF THE TIME.
AND SORT OF ONE OF THE REAL ADVANTAGES OF THIS TECHNOLOGY IS GOING TO BE OPERATING, BEING ABLE TO OPERATE BASICALLY 24, SEVEN AND JUST STOPPING FOR MAINTENANCE AND FUEL AND THINGS LIKE THAT. AND THAT'S KIND OF ACTUALLY WHERE THE COST SAVINGS COME FROM.
THANK YOU. REDUCE THESE STORYBOOK REGULATIONS ON OUR DRIVERS.
COULDN'T WE AS HUMANS DO THAT SAME KIND OF TIME ON THE ROAD? UM. WE I THINK THERE ARE LIMITS TO HOW MUCH.
I THINK ALREADY WE ASK A LOT OF DRIVERS AND THE REGULATIONS THAT CURRENTLY EXIST ARE PRIMARILY SAFETY REGULATIONS AND THEY COME KIND OF COME OUT OF THEY HAVE EVOLVED NATURALLY.
I DON'T THINK THAT THE REGULATIONS ARE NECESSARILY PERFECT AND I KNOW THAT A LOT OF DRIVERS HATE HOURS OF SERVICE REGULATIONS, WHICH IS WHAT THEY'RE CALLED, WHICH THE HOURS OF SERVICE REGULATIONS BASICALLY SAY THAT A DRIVER CAN DRIVE 11 HOURS OUT OF A 14 HOUR WORKDAY.
AND WITH SOME THERE ARE SOME REQUIREMENTS AROUND BRAKES AS WELL.
AND I THINK I THINK THERE'S CERTAINLY THERE ARE MANDATED BREAK PERIODS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
SO I THINK JUST SORT OF ONE MORE SLIDE AND I'M HAPPY TO TAKE OTHER QUESTIONS.
THIS MAP COMES FROM FROM TEXAS AND IS A SORT OF COMPREHENSIVE MAP OF OF EVERYWHERE IN IN TEXAS, WHERE AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES ARE BEING TESTED AND TESTED AND DEPLOYED TODAY.
AND. SO YOU SEE THERE'S A LOT OF THINGS HAPPENING THROUGHOUT THE STATE, BUT DALLAS DEFINITELY GETS THE THE BIGGEST HUB OF OF DOTS ON THE MAP.
AND I THINK WE SEE WE SEE THAT PRETTY.
UH, YOU KNOW, PRETTY, PRETTY STARKLY.
AS I SAID, WE DELIVER FREIGHT TO HOUSTON, SAN ANTONIO AND AUSTIN.
UM, BUT THERE ARE ALL SORTS OF TECHNOLOGIES IN THIS INDUSTRY FROM SORT OF TAXIS AND PASSENGER CARS TO SHUTTLES IN THERE, SORT OF SHUTTLES BEING TESTED IN ARLINGTON AND COLLEGE STATION AND ELSEWHERE.
AND, YOU KNOW, I THINK WE'VE SEEN WE'VE SEEN A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF GROWTH IN THIS INDUSTRY.
[00:55:02]
AND I THINK AS TEXAS GROWS AND KIND OF THE SOUTH GROWS, THAT HUB IS BECOMES MORE AND MORE IMPORTANT.THERE ARE FIVE COMPANIES IN THE DALLAS AREA MENTIONED, MOST OF THEM.
AND THEN I THINK WE SEE A LOT OF OF INTERESTING JOB OPPORTUNITIES AND APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITIES, NOT JUST FOR THOSE THOSE SAFETY DRIVERS AND POTENTIALLY BRIGHT SEAT OPERATORS, BUT REALLY ATTRACT TECHNICIANS, INSPECTORS AND PEOPLE KIND OF IN THE LONG RUN, BUILDING AND OPERATING THESE FLEETS, WORKING IN OPERATIONS CENTERS, WORKING ON THE TRUCKS, WORKING ON BOTH THE SORT OF UNDERLYING TRUCKING PLATFORMS AND THE AND ON THE THE SORT OF AUTONOMY PLATFORM AND AND REALLY OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE THIS REALLY GROW THIS BOTH IN TERMS OF OF JOBS AND ECONOMIC IMPACT IN IN THE DALLAS AREA.
SO THAT'S KIND OF THE END OF MY PRESENTATION, BUT I'M MORE THAN HAPPY TO ANSWER QUESTIONS AND THINK ABOUT AND TALK ABOUT WHERE WE'RE GOING FROM HERE. THANK YOU, DANIEL.
WE REALLY APPRECIATE THE OVERVIEW OF YOUR COMPANY AND WHAT'S GOING ON IN AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES.
AND WE'RE GLAD YOU'VE CHOSEN TEXAS AND NORTH TEXAS.
ALL RIGHT. ANOTHER KEY PART OF THE SOLUTION IS OUR FRIENDS AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES.
IT IS LIKE RIDING WITH A I WILL JUST PUT THIS GINGERLY AN ELDERLY RELATIVE WHO DRIVES SLOWLY.
THAT'S THAT'S ABOUT ABOUT HOW THE EXPERIENCE FEELS LIKE.
BUT SO YOU EVER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY.
GO FOR IT. IT'S IT'S REALLY INTERESTING.
SO AND THERE'S ONE AND I'LL HIGHLIGHT VERY BRIEFLY IN MY PRESENTATION, BUT THE DEPLOYMENT AT ARLINGTON IN AND AROUND THE UKIAH CAMPUS, THAT'S A COMPANY CALLED MAY MOBILITY, THEY'VE TEAMED UP WITH VIA SORT OF ESSENTIALLY LIKE A PRIVATE TRANSIT COMPANY.
AND MORE AND MORE PEOPLE SEEM TO BE CLICKING YES ON THAT.
SO THEY'VE HAD A LOT OF REALLY GREAT GROWTH.
AND SO I'LL SPEAK TO THAT JUST VERY BRIEFLY.
BUT YEAH, JUST GET OUT THERE, SEE IT FOR YOURSELF.
MAYBE. YEAH, MAYBE I'LL HAVE TO DO IT AS WELL.
AND I CAN'T GET MY POWERPOINT TO CHANGE SLIDES EVERY TIME, EVERY TIME.
SO I JUST WANT TO GIVE YOU ALL A SENSE OF CONTEXT FOR THE REGION.
AND SO LET ME BACK UP, INTRODUCE MYSELF.
MY NAME'S CLINT HALE. THANK YOU TO THE BOARD FOR INVITING ME TO BE A PART OF THIS.
IT'S A MOUTHFUL, AND A FEW OF YOU HERE ARE INTIMATELY AWARE OF THE KEY COG.
MOST OF YOU ARE NORMAL PEOPLE.
SO WE ARE VERY BRIEFLY, WE'RE THE REGION'S METROPOLITAN PLANNING ORGANIZATION.
THAT WAS US WHERE WE PAVED THE NORTH OF TEXAS.
SO THERE'S THIS WHOLE WORLD THAT YOU HEARD ABOUT OF OF CONNECTED AND AUTOMATED VEHICLES.
AND WHEN WE SAY CONNECTED, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT VEHICLES THAT TALK TO EACH OTHER, VEHICLES THAT TALK TO INFRASTRUCTURE, INFRASTRUCTURE THAT TALKS TO VEHICLES, INFRASTRUCTURE THAT TALKS TO THE CLOUD, EDGE COMPUTING, LOTS OF TALKING AND COMMUNICATION AND LOTS OF BIG DATA.
[01:00:01]
THE WHOLE WORLD OF TRANSPORTATION IS BEING RESHAPED BY THESE NEW CLOUDS OF ACTIVITY IN THIS SPACE.MOST LIKELY IT IS CONSTANTLY PUMPING DATA BACK TO THE MOTHERSHIP AND DETROIT OR WHEREVER IT'S MADE.
AND AND THEY'RE COLLECTING THAT DATA AND THEY COMPILE IT AND THEY SELL IT TO THIRD PARTIES WHO THEN FIGURE OUT WHERE YOU'RE GOING, WHAT YOU'RE DOING, HOW THEY CAN SELL YOU STUFF BETTER, HOW THEY CAN IMPROVE TRAFFIC.
THAT'S FOLKS LIKE US USE THAT DATA SO WE'RE MOST OF US ARE ALREADY DRIVING A CONNECTED VEHICLE.
SO A FEW YEARS AGO, ALL THAT TO SAY A FEW YEARS AGO ON OUR LITTLE TWO MAN TEAM, WE DECIDED THAT WE REALLY WANT TO PUSH NORTH TEXAS TO TO PREPARE IT FOR THIS INCREASING ROADWAY AND VEHICLE AUTOMATION.
AND SO WE THOUGHT WHAT'S A WHAT'S AN INITIATIVE WE CAN TAKE ON THAT WILL DEVELOP THESE SORTS OF CHARACTERISTICS IN THE REGION THAT YOU SEE LISTED UP HERE? HOW CAN WE GET MORE TYPES OF AUTOMATED VEHICLES? THERE'S MORE THAN JUST PERSONAL VEHICLES.
THERE'S EVEN MORE THAN JUST FREIGHT VEHICLES.
THERE'S A LOT OF DIFFERENT FORM FACTORS.
AS I LIKE TO SAY IN THE INDUSTRY, THERE'S A LITTLE SIDEWALK DELIVERY ROBOTS.
THERE'S THERE'S VARYING DEGREES OF OF SLIGHTLY SCARY ROBOTIC FORMS THAT ARE DELIVERING THINGS.
YOU KNOW, THERE'S UAB'S, SO HOW CAN WE GET ALL OF THOSE SORT OF ACCOUNTED FOR AND START GETTING THE REGION NOT ACCUSTOMED TO IT, BUT START GETTING THE REGION ADAPTED TO THE SORTS OF CHALLENGES THAT THESE THINGS CREATE ARE GOING TO BE REALLY PROACTIVE.
SO WE PUT TOGETHER THESE GOALS AND HOW CAN WE MAKE THESE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE REGION? AND SO WE. WHAT'S THE PROJECT? WELL, SEE, ONCE WE GOT IT APPROVED IN 2018 AND THE GREAT WHEELS OF GOVERNMENT TURN FOR A FEW YEARS, AND SO WE ARE FINALLY GETTING THESE PROJECTS UP AND RUNNING.
SO WHETHER A COMMUNITY WITH A COMMUNITY THAT HAS A LOT OR A COMMUNITY THAT HAS A LITTLE, WE'RE GOING TO DO WHAT IT TAKES TO HELP MAKE SURE YOU CAN PARTICIPATE IN THIS KIND OF INITIATIVE.
IT'S CALLED THE AUTOMATED VEHICLES 2.0 PROGRAM.
AND THERE'S THREE INITIATIVES IN IT.
VERY PROUD OF THAT. SO BUT I'M TRYING TO AVOID IT.
SO 2.1, THE WHOLE PROGRAM IS ABOUT 31 AND A HALF MILLION DOLLARS.
THE FIRST MILLION AND A HALF ARE GOING TO A THAT'S CURRENTLY RUNNING OR GOING TO A REGIONAL PLANNING EXERCISE WHERE WE'VE GOT A CONSULTANT WHO WE'RE WORKING WITH AND THEY'RE DOING A LOT OF STUFF ALL AROUND THE REGION AND WITH OTHER LOCAL PARTNERS TO TO PLAN FOR THIS AND DEVELOP A DOCUMENT THAT OUR CITIES AND OTHER AGENCIES CAN USE TO PLAN FOR THE FUTURE.
AND THEN 2.2 AND 2.3 HAVE ESSENTIALLY KIND OF MELDED TOGETHER.
AND WHAT YOU SEE HERE IS THE FRUIT OF THAT.
SO DALLAS COLLEGE IS AN EXCELLENT COMPANY, AS YOU CAN SEE.
THESE ARE ALL OF THE FOLKS WHO HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THIS KIND OF A SUMMARY SLIDE OF EVERYONE WHO'S WHO'S PUT TOGETHER PROPOSALS AND THAT WE'VE APPROVED FOR THIS FUNDING THAT 82.2 AND 2.3 FUNDING.
AND DALLAS COLLEGE IS LOOKING AT AN AUTOMATED VEHICLE DEPLOYMENT.
GETTING AVS OUT ON THE STREET, WHICH WE'VE HAD A GREAT TRACK RECORD AS AN AGENCY FACILITATING, AND NOW DALLAS COLLEGE IS STEPPING IN AND THEY'VE GOT A REALLY EXCITING PROJECT THAT THEY'RE WORKING ON AS WELL.
DALLAS COLLEGE AS I'M SURE SOME OF YOU ARE AWARE ALREADY, IS PUTTING TOGETHER A WORKFORCE INITIATIVE WHICH WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT AND THEY ARE THE LEADER IN THE REGION ON THE WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT SIDE OF THIS AND THEY'RE THE ONLY FOLKS PUTTING TOGETHER A REAL, VERY FORMAL CURRICULAR ASPECT TO WHAT THEY'RE TRYING TO DO.
PORTLAND COLLEGE IS TRYING TO DO AS YOU KNOW, THEY HAVE THE ORGANIC FARM.
[01:05:02]
REALLY FASCINATING STUFF.I'LL SKIP AHEAD. BUT JUST WE'VE GOT A WHOLE WIDE RANGE OF STUFF FROM TRUCK PORTS WHERE THOSE OVER THE ROAD VEHICLES COME AND STOP AND DROP OFF THEIR TRAILERS AND THEN PICK UP ANOTHER TRAILER, GET BACK OVER THE ROAD.
KIND OF LIKE WHAT DAN WAS TALKING ABOUT TO AUTOMATED PARKING AT THE AIRPORT, CONNECTED AUTOMATED VEHICLE DISTRICT IN RICHARDSON, AND THEN EXPANDING THE DEPLOYMENT OUT IN ARLINGTON AS WELL AS FAR AS WHAT KINDS OF TECHNOLOGY ARE PLUGGED INTO IT.
SO I SAID I'D SKIP IT, BUT I HAD TO TALK ABOUT IT.
AND THEN JUST PUTTING TOGETHER AN AUTOMATED VEHICLE, AN ELECTRIC BUT AUTOMATED AND ELECTRIC BUS SERVICE DOWN AT THE THE THEY CALL IT THE LOVE LINK. IT GOES FROM LOVE FIELD DOWN TO INWOOD AND INTO THE SURROUNDING AREA.
SO DOING REALLY EXCITING, INTERESTING STUFF.
YOU MENTIONED DALLAS COLLEGE DOING IT DEPLOYMENT AS WELL AS WHAT WE'RE DOING ON WORKFORCE.
WHAT DOES OUR DEPLOYMENT LOOK LIKE? WHAT IS IT? SO IT'S A AND MAYBE I'LL GET TO SPEAK TO THAT MORE A LITTLE LATER, BUT IT'S ESSENTIALLY CONNECTING THE CEDAR VALLEY CAMPUS, BOTH THE CAMPUS ITSELF AND THE POINTS OF INTEREST IN THE COMMUNITY AROUND IT, CIRCULATING THROUGH THERE AND PROVIDING DIFFERENT TYPES OF OF RIDERSHIP, THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET AROUND. SO, YOU KNOW, AND I THINK THE DETAILS WE'RE STILL IN THE EARLY STAGE OF OF TALKING TO TECH SUPPORT AND ALL OF THAT.
SO DETAILS WILL GET WORKED OUT AS WE GO.
YES, WE'LL HAVE ONE FOR THE 4TH OF JULY PARADE, TOO.
THAT'S RIGHT. IT'S ACTUALLY GOING TO TRANSFORM FROM OPTIMUS PRIME.
ALL RIGHT. SO ROUND ONE ROUND, YOU DON'T REALLY MATTER.
BUT IT'S ALL HAPPENING CONCURRENTLY.
BUT THIS IS JUST TO GIVE YOU A SENSE, THE FIRST ROUND, WHICH DALLAS COLLEGE WAS A PART OF, PUT TOGETHER AN INITIATIVE OR ALL THESE FOLKS PUT TOGETHER PROPOSALS THAT WERE APPROVED. AND THEN WE BECAUSE WE'RE A REGIONAL ENTITY, WE WANT TO BALANCE THINGS OUT.
SO IT'S THE WHOLE REGION'S REALLY STEPPED UP INTO A REALLY INTERESTING STUFF HERE.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN THE REGION WORKING ON THE WORKFORCE PART OF THIS, OR ARE WE THE ONLY ONE? I WOULD SAY THE ONLY ONE WITH A FORMAL CURRICULUM.
THERE'S THERE'S TWO OTHER I SHOULD I SHOULD SAY, NOT INVOLVED WITH THIS PROJECT.
SO. WELL, PAUL QUINN COLLEGE, I THINK, IS GOING TO PUT TOGETHER SOMETHING FOR THEIR STUDENTS RELATED TO THAT SPECIFIC DEPLOYMENT, BUT NOT LIKE, YOU KNOW, A WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT IN THE WAY Y'ALL ARE DOING IT.
HERE'S ANOTHER MOUTHFUL, Y'ALL.
I'M SORRY, BUT NORTH CENTRAL TECH, OUR NORTH TEXAS CENTER FOR MOBILITY TECHNOLOGIES, THE NCTC, CMT, THAT IS THAT'S A IT'S A CONSORTIUM OF ALL THE RESEARCH UNIVERSITIES IN THE REGION, ALONG WITH THE TEXAS RESEARCH ALLIANCE AND NKT, WE'VE PUT TOGETHER IT'S NOT SO MUCH A WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT AS MUCH AS IT IS TO CREATE OPPORTUNITY FOR INDUSTRY WANTS TO COME TO THE REGION AND DO RESEARCH ON TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGY.
WE CAN GIVE YOU REALLY GOOD QUALITY RESEARCH THAT PROBABLY HALF THE PRICE.
SO WE CAN DO THAT THROUGH THIS PROGRAM.
AND IT'S TO GIVE RESEARCHERS IN THE AREA A CHANCE TO WORK ON THIS STUFF.
AND SO IT IS WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT, BUT IN A MORE ADJACENT WAY.
SO WE HAVE COMMISSIONERS, MAYORS, WE HAVE MR. RITTER IS IS ON THE REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION COUNCIL.
SO YOU HEARD THIS THERE, BUT THAT'S WHERE WE GO AND THE REGION DECIDES ON WHAT'S OUR WHAT'S OUR POLICY DIRECTION FOR SURFACE TRANSPORTATION IN THE REGION. SO I BROUGHT THIS TO THEIR ATTENTION TO SHOW THEM IN THE FIRST ROUND, NOT ONLY DID WE MATCH THOSE GOALS WE SET OUT, BUT IN THE FIRST ROUND, WE WE REALLY KIND OF BLEW IT OUT OF THE WATER WITH THE INCREDIBLE PROPOSALS THAT WERE PUT TOGETHER.
AND THEN IN THE SECOND ROUND, OTHER ENTITIES STEPPED UP.
AND WE WE DEEPEN THE TECHNOLOGY PORTFOLIO EVEN MORE.
AND THERE'S BY OUR LIGHTS, THERE'S NO OTHER REGION IN CERTAINLY WITHIN THE STATE, BUT WE PRETTY SURE WITHIN THE REGION OR WITHIN THE WHOLE COUNTRY THAT HAS THIS KIND OF CONNECTED AUTOMATED VEHICLE ECOSYSTEM.
[01:10:03]
REGION'S GOING TO LOOK LIKE AND HOW WE MOVE AROUND IN THE NEAR AND LONG TERM.BUT WHERE DALLAS COLLEGE FITS IN IS THERE TO BE, AS I'VE ALREADY HIGHLIGHTED, THEY'RE THE ONLY ONE.
Y'ALL ARE THE ONLY ONES DOING STRICT WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT.
YOU STEP UP TO THE PLATE, SAID, WE WANT TO BE A LEADER IN EQUIPPING THE REGION WITH THE TALENT.
WE NEED NOT TO JUST DO THE ENGINEERING, BUT TO ALSO SERVE ALL THESE OTHER ASPECTS.
THE VEHICLES ARE A TINY LITTLE PART OF THIS WHOLE PUZZLE, BUT THERE'S A WHOLE CLOUD OF TECHNOLOGY.
WE WANT TO EQUIP THE REGION TO BE READY FOR THIS.
WE'VE GOT TO PULL THE REINS ON SOME TIME.
WELL, GOSH, YOU KNOW, YOU DON'T HAVE TO, YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW, TRY TO ENCOURAGE YOU.
IT'S IT'S IT'S KIND OF THE OPPOSITE.
SO WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR ENTHUSIASM AND YOUR YOUR EXPERTIZE.
SO I COULD GO ON ALL DAY WITH THIS.
I'M REALLY PROUD OF THIS GROUP HERE AND WHICH I'LL DONE.
SO I'M HAPPY TO ANSWER QUESTIONS OR NOW OR AFTER.
SO WHAT THE COLLABORATION LOOKS LIKE.
HERE'S THE NUMBERS. SO WHAT WHAT THE REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION COUNCIL APPROVED WAS $4.74 MILLION TO SUPPORT BOTH THE WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE BEING HOSTED AT CEDAR VALLEY AND THE WHAT BECAME THE EASTFIELD CAMPUS AUTOMATED VEHICLE DEPLOYMENT.
AND WE'RE A SMALL PIECE OF GIL'S WHOLE PUZZLE HERE.
SO SO WHAT IS IT THAT YOU BE OFFERING IN THE SOUTH, ESPECIALLY THE VERY SOUTHWEST PART OF THE COUNTY, ALL THE MILES WE HAVE NO EAST-WEST TRANSPORTATION, SO WE HAVE MAJOR MANUFACTURERS WHO'VE GOT EMPLOYEES WHO CAN'T GET TO WORK AND THAT WELL, WHY WOULDN'T YOU TAKE A PROJECT LIKE Y'ALL WORKING ON AND AND DEVELOP THAT EAST-WEST SOLUTION FOR FOR THE BEST SOUTH-WEST CITIES.
SIR, I THINK YOU'VE GIVEN US OUR NEXT BEST PROJECT IDEA.
I MEAN WE DON'T I THINK SOME OF OUR COLLEAGUES AT NKT WHO ARE WORKING ON THE THE THE HIGHWAY SPECIFICALLY ARE TRYING TO SOLVE SOME OF THAT PROBLEM WITH LOOP NINE AND SOME OF THE OTHER CHALLENGES.
I MEAN, JUST LIKE KODIAK NOW, I MEAN, SO YOU'RE NOT GOING TO PUT FREIGHT IN THERE, BUT YOU COULD TAKE A TRACTOR RIGHT NOW AND PUT A VEHICLE OF PEOPLE CARRYING VEHICLE WITH A TRACTOR, AND YOU COULD BE HAULING PEOPLE TODAY WHILE THEY'RE WORKING ON THEIR TECHNOLOGY.
WELL, I MEAN, THAT'S A VERY GOOD POINT.
AND I THINK IT'S A STEP IN THAT DIRECTION MIGHT BE THE INLAND PORT.
OUR AGENCY IS REALLY OUR DIRECTOR HAS MADE IT A BIG PRIORITY TO FIGURE OUT RIGHT NOW IT'S SORT OF LIKE OUR REGIONS, DUNKIRK, RIGHT? LIKE THERE'S ALL THESE JOBS DOWN THERE, BUT IT'S OUTSIDE TRANSIT.
WHO AM I? I WAS A TRANSPORTATION PLAYER.
SO I WOULD JUST SAY THE WORLD NEEDS MORE NERDS LIKE YOU, AND IT UNDERSTATES THE ROLE OF THE COG AND THE URGENCY TO SAY THAT YOU'RE A PARTNER BECAUSE YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN LEADING ON THIS AND IT'S THE ELECTED OFFICIALS, IT'S YOUR STAFF, IT'S THE ENGINEERING COMMUNITY, IT'S ALL THE INDUSTRY PARTNERS THAT HAVE COME IN.
THANK YOU. YEAH, I APPRECIATE EVERYONE.
WHAT'S NICE? THANK YOU, CLINT.
THIRD PART OF THE SOLUTION, THE DALLAS COLLEGE PART AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT.
I'M THE VICE PROVOST FOR SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT AND SCIENCES.
AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME FOR ME TO TALK ABOUT THE PRESENTATION.
WE HAVE HEARD ABOUT YOU, AND WE'RE GLAD YOU'RE HERE.
[01:15:03]
YOU'RE WELCOME.YEAH. SO JUST INTRODUCE A LITTLE BIT OF MY BACKGROUND.
I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF WORKING ON A LOT OF PROJECTS.
I'VE BEEN SITTING THERE THINKING, WHICH PROJECTS WOULD I TO MENTION? THE FIRST ONE THAT STOPPED MY MIND WAS LIKE I WAS PART OF A TEAM THAT ACTUALLY DESIGNED THE COVER OF A GRAY GOOSE VODKA BOTTLE.
SO THE LIQUID LEVEL IN THE CONTAINER WAS NOT VISIBLE FROM OUTSIDE.
SO THE COMPANY CAME TO US AND SAID, LIKE, CAN YOU DESIGN THE COMPOSITION OF THE GLASS IN A WAY THAT THE LIQUID LEVEL COULD BE VISIBLE FROM OUTSIDE? I DON'T THINK THAT I TAKE THOSE.
AND THEN I HAD I WAS WORKING ON A PROJECT WITH DARTMOUTH TRYING TO CREATE A PROPULSION SYSTEM FOR A NANO ROBOT TO EXPLORE THE SPACE.
AND THE OTHER PROJECT THAT I WORKED ON WAS LIKE 3D PRINTING OF NUCLEAR FUEL.
AND I WORKED WITH BRIDGESTONE IN MICHELIN STARRED COMPANIES WITH THEIR MANUFACTURING ARMS AGAINST OUR LAUNCH. BUT ANY JOINT DALLAS COLLEGE I'VE BEEN WITH SPOKE ABOUT BEING A GREAT.
I'M VERONIQUE TRAN. I'M THE VICE PROVOST FOR THE SCHOOL OF MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY.
MY BACKGROUND IS STARTING OUT AS AN ENGINEER IN OIL AND GAS AND THEN WENT ON TO, I GUESS, A DETOUR INTO BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING AND RESEARCH.
IN BAYTOWN. I JOINED DALLAS COLLEGE IN OCTOBER OF 2020.
SO I'VE BEEN HERE ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF.
AND THIS EXCITING OPPORTUNITY THAT THAT BROUGHT ME HERE.
SO SINCE I'VE BEEN HERE, WE'VE BEEN DOING SOME OF THE INITIAL INNOVATIVE WORK.
AND THROUGH PATHWAYS, WE'RE GOING TO SHARE MORE ABOUT THAT MODEL WHEN WE TALK ABOUT IT.
WE TRAINED OVER 330 EMPLOYEES OF AMAZON ALEXA SINCE JUNE OF 2020.
WE WANTED TO ACTUALLY PRESENT HOW ARE WE GOING TO TRAIN THE WORKFORCE IN THIS EVOLVING ARENA OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES? SO TO START OFF THAT SPIRIT, I ACTUALLY WANTED TO TOUCH BASE WITH ONE OF THE QUESTIONS TRUSTEE FLORES ASKED, SAYING LIKE, THIS IS A GROWTH INDUSTRY. SO THIS INDUSTRY IS A $800 BILLION INDUSTRY AS OF NOW, WHICH HAS ABOUT 50,000 OF THE QUADRANT ONLINE RIGHT NOW.
BUT IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS, THAT NUMBER IS GOING TO MOVE TO 160,000.
SO THIS IS AN INDUSTRY WHERE WE NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW CAN WE BUILD ON OUR EXISTING TECHNOLOGIES AND PROVIDE THE NEED OF WHAT THE INDUSTRY WANTS IN A SKILL SET FOR A WORKFORCE.
BUT FOR TRUCK, FOR TRUCKING, IT IS NOT ALWAYS THE CASE.
SO LEVEL FOUR IS A SLOWER ONE, BUT 11 FOUR IS ALSO AN AUTOMATION.
[01:20:03]
MAPS ARE ALL PLANNED AND EVERYTHING IS AVAILABLE IN A DATA FORM, BUT THERE'S STILL A DRIVER IN FRONT.SO THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE IN THAT.
SO NOW WHEN WE ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE NEEDS OF HOW THE WORKFORCE NEED TO BE DEVELOPED FOR THIS EMERGING TECHNOLOGY, AS YOU MENTIONED, WE HAVE COMPRESSION SESSIONS WITH THE LEAD INDUSTRIES IN THIS AREA.
WE HAVE AURORA, BP, CISCO, KODIAK TO SAMPLE.
AND IN THESE SESSIONS, WE ACTUALLY WERE ABLE TO FIGURE OUT DIFFERENT AREAS IN HERE.
AND WHEN WE MAKE TEACHING, WE WANT TO CREATE THE WORKFORCE FOR THE INDUSTRY THAT NEEDS IT.
AND HERE THE INDUSTRY IS TELLING US THAT THESE ARE THE AREAS THAT ARE WHERE WE NEED THE WORKFORCE.
SO THESE ARE THE AREAS THAT ARE NON EXISTENT RIGHT NOW.
SO THE FIRST ONE IS SERIAL ARCHITECTURE OR THE LEFT SPEAKER.
THIS IS NOT SOMEBODY LIKE IN THE PAST.
WE USED TO HAVE SOMEBODY SITTING IN THE RIGHT SEAT TELLING OUR NAVIGATION DECK, NO, ABSOLUTELY NO.
THEY HAVE A UNIQUE SET OF JOB DUTIES AS THEIR LEGACY.
AND I'M GOING TO JUST FLIP IT AND THEN WE MOVE ON TO THE I.T.
SPECIALIST WHO IS GOING TO BE OFF THE VEHICLE OUTSIDE SOMEWHERE.
DAN WAS ACTUALLY MENTIONING ABOUT THE NEW CLASS OF WORKFORCE.
AND THIS IS AN AREA THAT WE ARE ALSO LOOKING AT.
IT COULD MOVE TO THE NEXT SLIDE.
SO THIS IS AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE FUNCTIONS HERE.
AND THE LEFT BOTTOM YOU SEE HERE IS THE LEFT SINGER WHO IS IN FRONT OF THE STEERING WHEEL.
AND THEN THE RIGHT TOP YOU SEE IS THE RIGHT SPEAKER.
AS YOU CAN SEE, THE TASKS ARE DIFFERENT AND THE RIGHT SITTER IS A PERSON WHO IS KIND OF LIKE A COPILOT IN AN AIRPLANE WHERE WHERE THE JUST TO GIVE AN EXAMPLE, A RIGHT IS A PERSON WHO IS GOING TO BE LOOKING INTO THE DATA, ONTO THE SCREEN WITH THE INFORMATION OF THE SENSORS THAT ARE SENSING, SAYING THAT THAT INCIDENT IS PROBABLY GOING TO CAUSE A LEFT CORNER POCKET, WHICH MEANS THAT THERE IS A VEHICLE AT THE REAR END OF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE.
SO THE LEFT SEATER IS GOING TO COPY THAT SAYING, YES, I SEE IT.
WHAT NOW WE ARE DOING IS WE ARE TRYING TO INPUT THE HUMAN INTELLIGENCE INTO THE SYSTEMS TO ADAPT.
SO A COMPANY LIKE TUSIMPLE ACTUALLY IMPLEMENTS MULTIPLE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SENSORS.
IT USES CAMERA TECHNOLOGY, IT USES LIGHT, IT USES LADDER, IT ACTUALLY USES FOR DIVESTMENT.
SO THAT COMMUNICATION IS WHERE THAT HAPPENS BETWEEN THE RIGHT AND THE LEFT.
BUT NOW, IF WE GO BACK TO REGULATIONS, IF IF AT ALL, THERE IS SOME SITUATION WHERE WHO'S THE PERSON WHO'S GOING TO TAKE THE DECISION, THE PERSON IN FRONT OF THE STEERING WHEEL.
THE LASSETER IS ALWAYS THE AUTHORITY OF TAKING A DECISION, WHATEVER THE DECISION IS.
SO THE TOP LEFT IS THE PERSON WHO IS OFFSIDE, NOT IN THE VEHICLE, BUT OUTSIDE, SOMEWHERE IN A BUILDING, MONITORING THE VEHICLE LIFE.
AND THEN THE BOTTOM LEFT, BOTTOM RIGHT IS THE PERSON WHO IS ACTUALLY MAINTAINING THE VEHICLE.
[01:25:09]
DIFFER. SO INITIALLY, WE WILL HAVE A MORE NEED OF AN EXIT LIGHT SYSTEM.AND THEN PROBABLY AFTER THAT TWO OR THREE YEARS, WE WILL HAVE MORE NEED OF THE IT SPECIALIST.
SO IT DEPENDS ON THE TIMELINE OF HOW WE MOVE THROUGH THE TECHNOLOGY.
AND HOW THE TECHNOLOGY GETS IMPLEMENTED THROUGHOUT THE US.
IT SEEMS LIKE IT'S MORE LABOR INTENSIVE BECAUSE OF THE ADDITIONAL PEOPLE YOU NEED TO MONITOR THE TECHNOLOGY. WOULD IT POTENTIALLY GET TO BE THEN NOW? RIGHT NOW IT'S JUST THE TRUCK DRIVER, RIGHT? YES. YEAH, BUT THIS IS INTERESTING.
WELL, TAKE THREE PEOPLE WHILE THE TRUCK IS IN MOTION.
WHEN WE GET TO WHERE IT'S LESS LABOR INTENSIVE OR IT.
BUT THE SAFETY RECORD IS GOING TO GO UP.
THE AUTOMATED VEHICLES ARE 10% LESS FUEL THAN A NORMAL VEHICLE.
AND THEN, AS I MENTIONED, IT GETS TO THE POINT WHERE WE CAN SAFELY GET TO THE.
THIS IS NO DIFFERENT THAN IN BIOLOGICAL.
THERE'S FIVE PEOPLE IN A LAB WORKING ON MICROSCOPES AND EVERYTHING ELSE.
AND IT'S TAKING ALL THOSE PEOPLE TO EVENTUALLY GET TO A SERUM THAT WORKS.
IT'S JUST IT'S JUST IT'S A MORE AN ACTIVITY AS OPPOSED TO WHAT WE DON'T SEE IN LAB SOMEWHERE.
EXACTLY. THE TECHNICIAN THAT'S HERE IN THE BOTTOM CORNER, THAT IS THE TECHNICIAN THAT JUST TAKES CARE OF THE ROBOTICS, THE I.T. AND THINGS.
OR I MEAN, THAT'S NOT A DIESEL MECHANIC, IS IT? NO, NO, NO. IT'S NOT MAINTAINING THE CROP, BUT IT IS MAKING THE SYSTEMS TO TALK TO EACH OTHER.
SO THEN WE STILL HAVE THE DIESEL MECHANIC.
IT'S NECESSARY. WE STILL HAVE ALL OF THE OTHER DIESEL END OF THINGS.
WE DO HAVE THAT AND THAT IS JUSTIFIED MENTIONED.
THE FURTHER AIM OF ALL THIS INDUSTRY IS TO GO TOWARDS AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE.
BUT WE KNOW WE DON'T HAVE IN HERE ANYTHING ON THAT FOR BATTERIES AND EVERYTHING ELSE.
BUT THE REAL MESSAGE IS THAT FOR THE FIRST TIME, HIGHER EDUCATION IS GETTING INVOLVED NOW THAN BEFORE NOW INSTEAD OF LATER AND CATCH IT UP.
YEAH WE'RE INVOLVED IN THE EVOLUTION AS OPPOSED TO THE WORKING THEM IN LATER.
YEAH. DALLAS COLLEGE IS REALLY LEADING THE WAY AS YOU HEARD EARLIER AND WE GOT TO DO THAT IN ALMOST EVERY DISCIPLINE IN THE COUNTRY THAT IT'S GOING TO DISTINGUISH DALLAS COLLEGE FROM THE REST OF THE WORLD.
LET'S PRESS AHEAD. LET'S PRESS AHEAD.
SO SO WHEN WE TALK ABOUT DALLAS COLLEGE LEADING THE WAY IN TERMS OF PROVIDING A SOLUTION, THERE ARE SOME HALLMARKS ABOUT DALLAS COLLEGE THAT MAKES THIS POSSIBLE THAT WE'RE RESPONSIVE, ADAPTIVE AND INNOVATIVE.
IF YOU'LL RECALL, IT'S THE TEXAS RESKILLING OF SKILLING THROUGH EDUCATION, WHICH INCLUDES THIS INITIAL COMPONENT THAT YOU SEE IS AND THAT WE CAN QUICKLY STAND UP A NONCREDIT FAST TRACK CERTIFICATION.
WE CAN QUICKLY WORK WITH INDUSTRY ON WHAT ARE THE SKILLS THAT YOU NEED, DESIGN THAT CURRICULUM, LEARN FROM THE FOUNDATION THAT PIMA COMMUNITY COLLEGE HAS ALREADY BUILT AS WELL, AND WE CAN BUILD THOSE CERTIFICATES AND OFFER THEM.
THE OTHER ADVANTAGE THAT WE HAVE IS THAT WE'RE NOT COMING INTO THE SPACE FROM THE GROUND UP.
WE ALREADY HAVE, AS YOU MENTIONED, AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIAN OR DIESEL MECHANICS PROGRAM.
WE HAVE ALL OF THESE CERTIFICATES AND ASSOCIATE DEGREE PROGRAMS THAT WE CAN INTEGRATE AND BUILD THIS AUTONOMOUS TECHNOLOGY INTO OUR EXISTING PROGRAM. SO THAT ALSO IS AN ADVANTAGE THAT WE HAVE.
AND MOVING FROM THE BLUE TO THE ORANGE, WE'VE ALSO DEVELOPED A QUICK WAY FOR STUDENTS TO BRIDGE NON CREDITS INTO A LEVEL ONE CERT THROUGH A CO OP CLASS.
SO ON THE JOB TRAINING, WE THEN ADMIT THEM AS A CREDIT STUDENT FOR A CO OP CLASS.
[01:30:09]
SO WE CAN GO AHEAD AND SPEED AHEAD TO TO IMPLEMENT THIS WITHOUT WAITING AND SAY, OKAY, IN THREE MORE YEARS WE'RE GOING TO DO THIS BECAUSE OF THE EXPERIENCES THAT WE'VE HAD.THE OTHER EXCITING PART IS THEN OF COURSE, WE CAN.
COURT RULES ARE A FOUR YEAR UNIVERSITY AND BACHELOR'S DEGREE.
SO THERE'S SOME EXCITING WORK HERE.
WE DON'T HAVE ANY FOUR YEAR PLANS IN THIS AREA, I WOULD ASSUME, BUT WHO ARE THE UPPER DIVISION UNIVERSITIES? SO WE HAVE REALLY ACTIVE IN THIS SPACE.
YES. SO WELL, IN TERMS OF WE ARE IN TALKS RIGHT NOW WITH TEXAS A&M COMMERCE HAS A B.A.
AND THE EXCITING THING THERE IS THEY RECENTLY RECEIVED APPROVAL TO ACCEPT ALL OF THE ASSOCIATE THAT AS THE ASSOCIATES APPLIED SCIENCE AS WELL AS THE 42 HOUR POUR INTO THEIR BASE.
AND THEN THE STUDENTS ONLY HAVE TO TAKE 40 MORE CREDIT OUTWARD TO GET THE 120.
BUT ALL THOSE 40 CREDITS ARE OFFERED ONLINE.
WE HAVE CYBERSECURITY AND ENGINEERING PARTNERS THAT YOU CAN SPEAK TO FOR CYBERSECURITY.
SO SO THERE'S A SAFETY PERSPECTIVE IN THERE AS WELL.
SO AS I MENTIONED, WE ACTUALLY HAVE THE FOUNDATION OF OUR PROGRAMS. SO WE'LL BUILD THAT.
WE ACTUALLY HAVE AN IN-BUILT COURSE.
WE CAN ACTUALLY TEACH THEM BASED ON THAT PERSPECTIVE.
BUT, YOU KNOW, OUR REAL OPPORTUNITY THAT I SEE IS THAT AS WE DID IN EARLY CHILDHOOD, RIGHT, THERE WERE NO OTHER UNIVERSITIES OFFERING A BACHELOR'S DEGREE.
RIGHT. WHAT I LEARNED IN NEW YORK AT THE CONVENTION LAST WEEK AND ONE OF THE PRESENTATIONS AND AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, THERE IS NO FOUR YEAR DEGREE OF BEING OFFERED.
SO PEOPLE WHO GET AN ASSOCIATE IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE THEN KNOW WHERE TO GO.
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL OPPORTUNITY FOR DALLAS COLLEGE.
I MEAN, SO SO WHAT I'M SAYING IS THAT WHERE THERE ISN'T ANYTHING, WE'RE NOT AFRAID TO LOOK.
AND THAT'S WHAT MADE THE COLLEGE DIFFERENT.
AND THAT'S OUR IN MY OPINION, THAT'S THE GREATEST VISION WE CAN HAVE.
HE WAS IN THE SAME PRESENTATION.
THE OPPORTUNITIES ARE UNBELIEVABLE.
IF WE'RE JUST WILLING TO STEP OUT AND TAKE THE FAITH AND MOVE.
AND SO I IT'S IT'S EXTREMELY EXCITING ABOUT WHAT WHAT WHAT I'M LEARNING.
AND THAT'S WHY INDUSTRY IS GOING TO LOOK TO US, BECAUSE WE'RE ALREADY REALLY AHEAD OF MOST PEOPLE.
AND THE BIG DIFFERENCE IS GOING TO BE OUR ATTITUDE START IN THIS ROOM.
WELL, AND AS YOU CAN ALSO SEE, THE TALENT THAT WE'VE WE'VE RECRUITED TO LEAD THESE AREAS THAT UNDERSTAND THE REAL WORLD, UNDERSTAND WHAT'S HAPPENING AND AND WORK WITH ALL SIDES OF OUR HOUSE TO CONNECT THOSE THINGS.
ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO WRAP UP? YEAH, WE GOT A LITTLE WRAP UP, BUT, YEAH, THAT COLLABORATION HAS BEEN AMAZING.
SO THESE FOLKS WILL BE GREAT TO WORK WITH.
AND ALONG THOSE LINES, WELL, WE'RE A LITTLE BIT OVER TIME, SO I'LL JUST RUN THROUGH THIS.
THERE'S A NEED TO INNOVATE AND TO PROVIDE A PIPELINE FOR GOOD.
THE OPPORTUNITY IS THERE FOR US TO TAKE THE PERFECT POSITION.
COMPANIES WANT TO MOVE TO DALLAS.
[01:35:01]
WE'VE GOT A GREAT COLLEGE SYSTEM HERE AND A NETWORK OF PARTNERS, BOTH REGIONALLY AND NATIONALLY, THAT WE CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF TO TO REALLY MAKE IT WORK HERE, NOT JUST REGIONALLY, BUT NATIONALLY.AND THE SOLUTIONS ARE TO DO JUST THAT, PUT TOGETHER THE PERFECT CURRICULUM THAT MEETS WHAT THE INDUSTRY NEEDS TO WORK WITH OUR GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES AND FRIENDS TO PROVIDE SEED FUNDING TO GET US STARTED.
WE NEED TO GET STARTED ON AND MOVE FORWARD IN THIS EXTREMELY EXCITING FIELD.
BUT MENTIONED HE'D BEEN IN A LOT OF AUTOMATED VEHICLES AS A PASSENGER.
IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN A TOUR OF EITHER KODIAK OR AVAILABILITY.
AURORA I'M SORRY, AURORA IN ARLINGTON.
THEY WON'T LET US DO. BELIEVE ME, OUR GAS.
BUT WE CAN RIDE IN A CAR AND IT IS AN AWESOME EXPERIENCE.
ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU. WE'LL TAKE A FIVE MINUTE BREAK.
WE'LL COME BACK AND QUARTER TO THE.
WE HAVE TAKEN A LITTLE LONGER TODAY THAN WE THOUGHT.
BUT WE'RE GOING TO GO WE'RE GOING TO GO AHEAD WITH THIS PRESENTATION BECAUSE IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT.
[4.1. Student Outcomes: AY19-20 Graduates One Year Out]
AND I TALKED TO JERRY AND THE CHANCELLOR, THE DR.JOSEPH, AND WE THINK WE CAN GET THROUGH THIS.
BUT IF YOU NEED TO TAKE MORE TIME WITH ANOTHER MEETING, WE WILL.
THE CONTENT IS GOING TO GENERATE A LOT OF QUESTIONS.
AND LIKE I SAY, WE WILL COME BACK TO IT WHEN WE NEED TO.
THANK YOU FOR GIVING US THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE WITH YOU THE STORY OF OUR GRADUATES.
THAT'S THE CONVERSATION TODAY.
WE ARE 19, 19, 19, 19, ACADEMIC YEAR OF 1920, 19 OH, 29, 19, 20, 2019. I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THAT.
YES, WE DESIGNED TIME TRAVEL MACHINE.
BUT SO THE CONVERSATION TODAY IN TERMS OF OUTCOMES DEALS WITH TRANSFER AND EMPLOYMENT AND THE VALUE ADDED THAT DALLAS COLLEGE BRINGS TO OUR GRADUATES AND THEIR FAMILIES.
SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, ANDERSON, THANK YOU.
AND I WILL SKIP A LONGER INTRODUCTION.
SO WE'RE GOING TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT BOTH OF THOSE TEAMS DO TODAY.
SO ALL THE WAY FROM ENTRY TO PERSISTENCE, THAT ATTAINMENT OF CREDENTIAL.
AND THEN WHAT HAPPENS AFTERWARDS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE YEAR OUT TRANSFER AND THEN CAREERS.
WHAT'S GOING ON THERE? SO WE WERE ASKED TO JUST MAYBE GIVE A LITTLE BIT OF CONTEXT BEFORE GETTING INTO THIS GROUP, THOSE THOSE AWARDEES IN 2019, 2020.
SO WE HAD 166,000 STUDENTS WITH US IN THAT YEAR AND 121/6 CREDIT STUDENTS.
SO THAT THAT PROFILE, AGAIN, VERY REPRESENTATIVE WHERE I WANT TO SLOW DOWN JUST A LITTLE BIT AND SPEND A COUPLE OF SECONDS HERE IS ON EDUCATIONAL GOALS AND FINALLY TALK ABOUT THE OUTCOMES OF OUR STUDENTS.
WE SHOULD PUT IT IN THE FRAME OF WHAT THEIR GOALS ARE WHEN THEY COME TO US.
IN FACT, IF YOU LOOK AT THE PIE CHART HERE, THE MAJORITY OF THE STUDENTS COME WITHOUT THAT GOAL.
ONLY ONE OUT OF EVERY THREE IN THIS GROUP CAME ASKING TO EARN A DEGREE FROM US.
THERE WAS ABOUT ANOTHER THIRD THAT WAS LOOKING TO TRANSFER TO A FOUR YEAR, AND THEN THERE'S STILL ANOTHER 40 YET WHO ARE LOOKING FOR A WHOLE DIFFERENT REASON, WHETHER IT BE AN INTEREST OR IMPROVE THEIR GRADES OR WHATEVER THE CASE IS.
[01:40:02]
THIS POST CREDENTIAL WORK.SO REALLY QUICKLY, WHAT HAPPENS WITH THESE STUDENTS WHO STARTED IN 1718? THIS IS ALSO AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE STORY FOR CONTEXT, WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO SEE HERE FROM YEAR TO YEAR.
WHEN YOU GET TO YEAR FOUR, THIS IS WHERE IT'S EXCITING TO COMPARE THESE NUMBERS TO THE LAST SLIDE, 60%, 61% OF OUR STUDENTS A BY YEAR FORM ARE EITHER STILL ENROLLED, THEY HAVE EARNED A CREDENTIAL FROM US OR THEY HAVE TRANSFERRED TO A FOUR HERE.
SO WHEN WE TALK ABOUT PUTTING THIS IN THE PROPER CONTEXT, THAT'S AN IMPORTANT PIECE TO TAKE AWAY.
SO TWO, TWO WINS THERE TO HIGHLIGHT.
I'M GOING TO SKIP OVER THE PARK HERE.
THIS IS JUST TO SAY, WE HAVE TWO IMPORTANT TEAMS WHO ARE WORKING ON THIS AND REALLY FRONTLINE WITH OUR STUDENTS AND ACADEMICS TO PLAN WHAT THIS JOURNEY LOOKS LIKE TO MAKE SURE WE'RE GETTING THESE OUTCOMES.
SO ANY QUESTIONS? DR. STILLS IN THE AUDIENCE, THEY CAN TAKE IT THERE.
AND WE'RE GOING TO START, LIKE I SAID, WITH THE ENTRY AND PERSISTENCE, THIS GROUP WAS FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT FROM THAT OVERALL POPULATION THAT WE WERE JUST LOOKING AT, WHICH WAS MUCH MORE VARIED IN THEIR GOALS.
AGAIN, FOR THESE STUDENTS, WE DID RIGHT BY WHAT THEIR GOALS WERE.
WHEN WE GO INTO THE THE ACTUAL GRADUATION, THIS IS WHERE WE CAN SPEND A LITTLE BIT MORE TIME.
SO UPWARD TRAJECTORY, AGAIN, WE'RE DOING GREAT WORK HERE.
AND THIS IS WHAT THAT GROUP LOOKS LIKE.
ALMOST 13,000 CREDENTIALS WERE AWARDED TO ALMOST 11,000 UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS.
SO ATTAINMENT WELL DEFINED THAT THAT IS WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT.
WHEN WE GO BACK A LITTLE BIT IN THE PRESENTATION, ONLY ABOUT 10% OF THOSE STUDENTS WHO ARE HERE SEEKING A CREDENTIAL SAID THAT THEY WANTED A CERTIFICATE, WHEREAS WHEN WE GET HERE, WE GOT ABOUT 33% HAVE FLIPPED.
AND THERE'S A REAL OPPORTUNITY HERE THAT WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT IN STUDENT SUCCESS TO HELP GUIDE STUDENTS, TO THINK ABOUT CERTIFICATES, NOT AS LIKE THIS FALLBACK OPTION, BUT THEY ARE VERY MUCH A VIABLE FIRST LEVEL OPTION WHEN YOU COME TO DALLAS COLLEGE.
AND THERE'S AN EXCITING STORY TO TELL ABOUT THAT WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE LABOR MARKET.
SO HOW WE CAN GUIDE OUR STUDENTS MORE CLEARLY AT THE FRONT END TO SAY HERE'S THE VALUE AND VALUE PROPOSITION OF THE CERTIFICATE, BECAUSE CLEARLY THEY'RE FIGURING IT OUT ALONG THE WAY. SO THE THE AWARDS THAT WE'RE OFFERING AND THIS IS WHERE IF YOU COME DOWN AND START TO LOOK AT THE CREDENTIALS THAT WE AWARD ASSOCIATES VERSUS CERTIFICATES, THERE'S A VERY DIFFERENT STORY FOR THESE TWO ASSOCIATES.
AND WE WILL SEE THAT WHEN WE LOOK AT TRANSFER RATES.
SO 70% OF THE AWARDS ON THE ASSOCIATES SIDE OR IN THE ASSOCIATES OF ARTS OR THE ASSOCIATES OF SCIENCE INTENDED FOR TRANSFER THAT NEXT TOP TEN OF ASSOCIATE'S PROGRAMS, THOSE ARE GOING TO BE IN AREAS LIKE STEM BUSINESS EDUCATION, WHERE THERE IS A HIGH PREMIUM ON TRANSFER INTO FOUR YEARS.
THAT IS AN OPPORTUNITY WITH WITH STUDENTS IN THAT AREA.
[01:45:04]
CERTIFICATES, THOUGH, THE STORY IS VERY DIFFERENT FIVE FOUR KIDS WHERE IF YOU'RE HERE FOR A CERTIFICATE, WHAT WE'RE SEEING BY AND LARGE, THESE ARE IN TECHNICAL FIELDS, VERY HANDS ON WHEN THEY GO OUT.WHAT THEY'RE ACTUALLY DOING IS THEY'RE JUMPING RIGHT INTO THE WORKFORCE.
THERE IS A VERY CLEAR INCENTIVE FOR THEM TO DO SO.
THE THE INCOME IS THERE, THE JOBS ARE THERE.
AGAIN, THAT THAT 13,000 IS WHAT WE'RE GOING TO START TO TALK ABOUT.
THEY GO ON TO DIFFERENT BRANCHES OF THE JOURNEY THAT FIRST WE'RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT TRANSFER.
AND ON TRANSFER, WE WORK WITH THE NATIONAL STUDENT CLEARINGHOUSE.
WHAT THEY DO IS THEY KIND OF TRACK STUDENTS ACROSS HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS.
SO IF I'M MOVING, I'VE ATTENDED THREE HIGHER ED INSTITUTIONS.
SO IT GIVES US THIS WHOLE PICTURE FOR OUR STUDENTS OF WHERE THEY ARE, WHERE THEY GO.
SO. WE USE THIS DATA HIGH LEVEL OF MATCHING 99% PLUS.
THE EXCITING THING IS OVER 4600 STUDENTS COMPLETED THAT TRANSFER PROCESS INTO A FOUR YEAR INSTITUTION PREDOMINANTLY AND ALSO INTO PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS WHERE WE HAVE BEEN PUTTING MUCH OF OUR EFFORT ON ARTICULATION.
THIS NUMBER, IF YOU LOOK AT IT AND CONSIDER IT 43% TRANSFER, WHICH COMPARED TO A COUPLE OF SLIDES BACK, 56% SAID THEY WANTED TO TRANSFER. THAT VOTE IS GOING TO BE DRIVEN BY THAT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CERTIFICATE EARNERS AND ASSOCIATE EARNERS.
84%. SO ROUGHLY EIGHT IN TEN ARE DOING SO FROM ONE OF THOSE TRANSFER INTENTIONAL PROGRAMS. SO WE ARE HITTING THE GOAL THAT THESE STUDENTS HAVE WHEN THEY COME TO US.
THE CERTIFICATE EARNERS, ONLY 14% OF THEM ARE TRANSFERRING OUT INTO A FOUR YEAR INSTITUTION.
AND WHAT WE'RE SEEING IS THERE'S JUST NOT A DEMAND FOR THEM TO TRANSFER INTO FOUR YEARS.
SO WE'RE SEEING REALLY GOOD THAT THE CERTIFICATES THAT WE DESIGNED ARE WELL ALIGNED TO THE MARKETPLACE AND VERY SMALL PERCENTAGES OF STUDENTS ARE NEEDING TO GO ON TO GET A FOUR YEAR.
WHAT WE'RE FINDING, THOUGH, IS THAT NUMBER IS UNDER TRANSFERRED.
SO THE LEARNING HERE IS HOW DO WE TALK TO THOSE STUDENTS COMING IN WITH A HEALTH PATHWAY WITH US AND GIVE THEM THE TOOLS SO THAT WHEN THEY GET TO THAT FOUR YEAR INSTITUTION, THEY HAVE AN OFF RAMP INTO A DIFFERENT FIELD OR ALONG THEIR JOURNEY WITH US, THEY'RE FINDING AND EXPLORING SOME OTHER ALTERNATIVES.
SO THAT'S THAT IS AN OPPORTUNITY THAT WE HAVE.
SO WHAT WE'VE FOUND, FOR EXAMPLE, WITH HEALTH IS THAT THERE ARE HIGH BARRIERS TO ENTRY FOR OUR STUDENTS GPA REQUIREMENTS OR LETTERS OF REFERENCE THAT HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO DISPARATELY IMPACT IN AN INEQUITABLE WAY POPULATIONS.
SO OUR STUDENTS ARE FACING THOSE HEADWINDS AT THE FRONT END, ON THE ADMISSIONS SIDE.
AND THEN ONCE THEY GET THERE, THEY'RE ALSO FACING WHAT ARE CALLED GATEKEEPER COURSES.
THAT'S GOING TO BE INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT TO EMPOWER THEM TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS AS A LEARNER.
SO WORK THAT THE SUCCESS COACHING TEAM WILL DO WITH OUR STUDENTS MOVING FORWARD.
[01:50:07]
AND THIS THIS AGAIN, WE DID A LITTLE BIT OF RESEARCH.WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO DO RESEARCH.
AND THIS IS ULTIMATELY GOING TO LEAD TO RECOMMENDATIONS THAT WILL BE PUT INTO PLACE.
ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT AT THE END? WE'VE GOT A GREAT COLLEAGUE OUT THERE.
SO THIS IS WHERE I HUSTLED A LITTLE BIT TO GET US TO THE WORLD OF WORK.
SO WHAT ARE WE SEEING IN THAT REGARD? AND I WANT TO SLOW DOWN AND TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT METHODOLOGY, BECAUSE THIS MATTERS AND THERE MIGHT BE SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS.
THE CHALLENGE FIRST CHALLENGE IS THEY RELY ON EMPLOYERS TO STUDY THAT INFORMATION.
SO IF THAT PERSON IS SELF EMPLOYED OR UNEMPLOYED OR THEY WORK IN ANOTHER STATE AND TEXAS ISN'T RECEIVING THEIR INFORMATION, WE DON'T GET AS GOOD OF A MATCH AS WE DO WITH NATIONAL STUDENT CLEARINGHOUSE.
SO THAT'S THE FIRST CAVEAT THAT I WANT TO JUST PUT OUT THERE.
THE SECOND CAVEAT IS IT'S MORE OF THE METHOD.
WE'RE GOING TO LOOK AT THE 35,000, 3500 SORRY, 5000, 3500 WHO HAD PRE EMPLOYMENT AND POST EMPLOYMENT SO THAT WE CAN DO A REALLY GOOD RETURN ON INVESTMENT ANALYSIS. SO AGAIN, THESE ARE NOT ALL OF THE STUDENTS WHO WENT OUT TO THE WORLD OF WORK.
I'LL GIVE YOU A LITTLE NUGGET ABOUT THEM.
SO THIS IS BUILDING UP ANTICIPATION HERE.
THAT'S THE 6200 STUDENTS WENT OUT INTO THE WORLD OF WORK IMMEDIATELY.
ONLY ABOUT HALF OF ASSOCIATES.
IT'S THE FLIP SIDE ON THE CERTIFICATES.
BY AND LARGE, THEY'RE GOING OUT INTO THE WORKFORCE BECAUSE THERE IS THE WAGE PREMIUM THAT WE'LL GET TO MOMENTARILY, THE PER CAPITA INCOME OF THESE STUDENTS VERSUS THE COUNTY.
THERE ARE TWO REALLY IMPORTANT POINTS TO BE MADE HERE.
BY THE TIME THAT THEY COMPLETED, THEY WERE WELL OVER ABOUT 12,000 OVER THE COUNTY AVERAGE.
THAT IN AND OF ITSELF IS A GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT.
THE OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENT THERE, THOUGH, IS THEY'VE EARNED THEIR EARNINGS.
THAT'S ROUGHLY A 50% EARNING POWER INCREASE.
AND WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THAT $32,000 OF EARNING AND WHAT THAT DIFFERENCE IS TO TO 46, THAT'S THAT'S HUGE, ESPECIALLY IN FAMILIES WHERE WE HAVE SINGLE EARNERS TRYING TO SUPPORT A HOUSEHOLD.
WHAT THAT DOES IS IT HELPS US MOVE THE COUNTY ABOVE THE POVERTY LINE.
AND TO BE ABLE TO SEE THAT WE ARE MOVING OUR STUDENTS IN 2018, MORE THAN HALF OF THEM, IF THEY WERE SINGLE EARNERS OR BELOW THAT POVERTY LINE WITH A MEDIAN INCOME OF $26,000.
AND IF THEY HAVE MULTIPLE EARNERS, THEY'RE EVEN MORE SECURE.
SO THIS IS THE STORY RIGHT HERE OF WHAT WE'RE DOING AS WE GRADUATE OUR STUDENTS.
WE ARE ADVANCING AND WE ARE MAKING MORE EQUITABLE THE WHOLE COUNTY.
SO THIS IS THE THE UPSHOT RIGHT THERE IS THE WORK THAT WE'RE DOING.
AND IF YOU LOOK AT JUST THE RAW NUMBERS, ASSOCIATES MIGHT SEEM LIKE IT'S LESS OF AN UPSHOT AS A CERTIFICATE, BUT I WANT TO REFRAME THAT A LITTLE BIT. SO IT GOES.
ROUGHLY HALF OF ASSOCIATE ERS ARE GOING TO WORK.
THEY'RE GETTING AN INCREASE OF ABOUT $16,000 A YEAR TO 38 SEVEN.
THAT IS A 71% INCREASE TO THEIR SALARY IN A THREE YEAR PERIOD, 71% RATES.
IF SOMEBODY CAME AND GAVE ME THAT TOMORROW, I'D SAY BY EVERYBODY, I KIND OF WRITE THAT DOWN AND.
[01:55:06]
YOU KNOW THE NUMBER? YEAH.BUT EVEN THAT ONLY 15,000, THEY'RE GOING RIGHT? THEY'RE GOING TO 51,000.
IN EARNING, THEY START A LITTLE BIT HIGHER.
SO THAT WAGE PREMIUM IS ONLY ABOUT A 41% INCREASE.
YEAH. SO THAT IS WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT, MOVING THESE THESE FOLKS FORWARD.
AND WE WANTED TO JUST END WITH ONE SLIDE HERE TO SHOW YOU IF YOU GET DOWN TO THE PROGRAM LEVEL, BECAUSE WE CAN GET TO THIS LEVEL OF ANALYSIS AND WE'LL BE WORKING WITH ACADEMICS AND STUDENT SUCCESS TO MAKE USE OF THIS INFORMATION.
SO THESE ARE SOME OF THE TOPS.
AGAIN, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT TAKE AWAY HERE CERTIFICATES DOMINATE THAT LIST.
SO HOW DO WE REFRAME CERTIFICATES ON THE ACADEMIC SIDE AND ON THE SUCCESS COACHING SIDE TO MAKE SURE THAT STUDENTS ARE UNDERSTANDING WHAT A CERTIFICATE IS AND WHAT THE VALUE IS IN THE WORKFORCE AND HOW IT'S GOING TO ADVANCE THEM IN THEIR LIFE.
SO THAT WAS THE ABRIDGED VERSION, OR I WANTED TO PAUSE THERE AND OPEN IT UP FOR QUESTIONS.
THANK YOU FOR CONDENSING THAT.
BUT WE DO HAVE TIME FOR QUESTIONS.
I'LL ASK ONE. WHEN I WAS OUT ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL, YOU HEARD A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS.
YOU HEARD A LOT OF NUMBERS THROWN AROUND.
ONE WAS THE GRADUATION RATE IN DALLAS COLLEGE IS ONLY 9%.
HOW DO YOU RESPOND TO THAT? YEAH, IN THE MOST POLITICAL WAY, I WOULD SAY THAT'S DONE.
I'M GOING TO GO BACK HERE A NUMBER OF SLIDES.
THE FIRST THING IS WE NEED TO REFRAME THAT CONVERSATION.
FIRST OF ALL, OUR STUDENTS AREN'T COMING TO US JUST TO GRADUATE.
TWO THIRDS OF THEM FOR SOME OTHER REASON.
THEY WANT TO TRANSFER TO A FOUR YEAR, AND THAT DOESN'T MEAN EARN A CREDENTIAL HERE FIRST.
SO THEY'RE COMING TO US AS A BRIDGE.
THAT'S ONE OF THE PILLARS OF OUR MISSION AS A COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
SEE, I'M A DISAPPOINTMENT TO THIS FIELD BECAUSE I DID NOT GET AN ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE BECAUSE IT WOULD HAVE TAKEN ANOTHER 12 HOURS TO GET AN ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE WHEN I WAS GOING FOR A FOUR YEAR.
THAT'S WHAT I WAS GOING TO DO.
RIGHT. SO HERE I WAS, THIS BIG DISAPPOINTMENT BECAUSE I DIDN'T GRADUATE, BUT I GOT WHAT I WANTED.
THANK YOU. AND I DIDN'T SPEND THE EXTRA 12 HOURS GETTING IT BECAUSE I DIDN'T NEED IT.
AND SO AT THAT POINT, I'M GLAD TO SEE THESE THESE ARE FINALLY NUMBERS THAT MATCH.
YEAH. AND SO I'LL SAY, TOO, IT'S NOT JUST THE THE TRANSFER.
SO THEY MIGHT TAKE ONE OR TWO COURSES TO GET A QUICK PAYOFF.
WE'RE SERVING THAT MISSION WHEN YOU GO BACK AND YOU LOOK AT WHAT WE'RE DOING.
WE'RE HITTING THAT. THAT'S PRETTY MUCH 100% RIGHT.
WELL, SO BY YEAR, FOR THAT TOP 60% THAT THEY ARE HITTING THE THE CREDENTIAL AND THE TRANSFER GOALS.
YES. THE OTHER WAY THAT I WOULD ANSWER THAT IS THIS ONE NUMBER, 22% IN YEAR FOUR IN THIS BLUE GRADUATING 20.
ONE OF EVERY FIVE HAVE GRADUATED.
IF YOU GO BACK, I THINK THERE WAS A NUMBER THROWN OUT, 9%.
THAT NUMBER TAKEN OFFLINE WAS A 9% GRADUATION RATE AFTER EIGHT YEARS FROM ONE CAMPUS AND THAT WAS A TEN YEAR OLD COHORT. SO IF YOU COME IN TEN OR 11 YEARS FROM TAKING EIGHT YEARS TO GRADUATE, 9% TO WE'RE NOW GRADUATING ONE OUT OF EVERY FIVE IN 40 YEARS.
[02:00:01]
TO GET THROUGH.SO THERE ARE THERE ARE STILL FOLKS WHO TAKE LONGER.
BUT WE HAVE COME A GREAT DISTANCE AND SEE THESE NUMBERS.
THESE NUMBERS ARE THESE ARE WHAT WE SHOULD HAVE HAD SIX YEARS AGO.
I MEAN, PART OF THAT I GIVE JEREMY AND THE ANALYTICS TEAM A LOT OF CREDIT THAT IN THE OLD STRUCTURE THERE WERE DIFFERENT POCKETS OF DATA THAT THEY HAVE REALLY HAD TO PULL TOGETHER TO CLEAN UP A LOT OF DATA TO BE ABLE TO PULL THIS TOGETHER SO WE CAN FULLY REALIZE AND UNDERSTAND WHAT THE IMPACT IS. AND SO ANOTHER THING I MEAN, I APPRECIATE YOUR PERSONAL STORY BECAUSE THERE ARE A LOT OF STUDENTS OUT THERE LIKE THAT THAT AT THE STATE POLICY LEVEL, AT THE FEDERAL POLICY LEVEL WOULD WOULD BE IDENTIFIED AS A FAILURE.
WOULD VICKI HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A, QUOTE, SUCCESS? BUT TELL THAT TO HER AND HER DAUGHTER AND HER FAMILY.
SO I'M A FAILURE TO THE STANDARDS SET BY THE DEPARTMENT OF ED.
BUT THESE THESE NUMBERS THESE NUMBERS CHANGE THE STORY.
WELL, IT'S GOOD TO HEAR THE CORRECT INTERPRETATION OF THIS, BECAUSE IN THIS LAST RACE, ONE OF MY OPPONENTS KEPT HARPING ON THIS INFORMATION, AND I KEPT SAYING, I DON'T THINK THIS IS EXACTLY THE CORRECT INFORMATION.
AND SHE ARGUED DIFFERENTLY, BUT IT'S GOOD TO HEAR THE CORRECT INFORMATION.
SO ON SLIDE 19, WHERE IT SHOWS IN TERMS OF THOSE THAT SAID THEY WANTED TO GO INTO A HEALTH FIELD AND AT THE POINT WHERE THEY TRANSFER HITTING SOME BARRIERS.
SO THE STUDENTS THAT DECLARED IT STEM BUSINESS OR ARTS AND HUMANITIES AS THEIR GOAL, THEY'RE OVERPERFORMING, IN OTHER WORDS, 20% IN STEM AND THEN 25% ACTUALLY TRANSFERRED.
ARE THEY NOT HITTING THE SAME TYPES OF BARRIERS? AND THAT'S WHY YOU HAVE SOME OVERPERFORMANCE THERE.
THAT'S A THAT IS A GOOD QUESTION.
WELL, IT WOULD BE GOOD TO FIND OUT WHAT HEALTH THESE THESE OTHER THREE CATEGORIES, THOSE STUDENTS BE SUCCESSFUL AND AT A GREATER RATE TRANSFER THAN WHAT THAT WHAT THEY DECLARED BECAUSE IS THERE'S SOME REPLICATION THERE THEN POSSIBLY IN THE HEALTH AREA AND THEY MAYBE ARE THEY ARE MAYBE ARE THEY NOT AS WELL AS ADVISED AS THEY NEED TO BE IN TERMS OF HOW TO PREPARE TO TRANSFER, TO OVERCOME THOSE BARRIERS. YOU SHOULD WRITE THE STORY AND GIVE IT TO THE DALLAS LAB TO PUBLISH ON THE WAY.
SO, ON SLIDE 21, YOU SAID THAT IN TERMS OF THE TRANSFER STUDENTS, WE'VE GOT A VERY GOOD DATA SOURCE THROUGH THE NATIONAL CLEARINGHOUSE, BUT NOT NECESSARILY THOSE THAT GO STRAIGHT TO WORK.
IS IT CAN WE ADVOCATE THEM? WE SHOULD ADVOCATE FOR THERE TO BE A SIMILAR CLEARINGHOUSE FOR THOSE THAT TRACK STRAIGHT OUT OF THE COLLEGES INTO THE WORKFORCE, NO MATTER WHAT COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY THEY ATTEND, BUT CAN TRACK THEM AS WELL.
THE £400 PERSON IN THE BASEMENT OF THE PARENT'S HOUSE, THERE'S ONLY 200.
BUT I KNOW IF WE CAN HAVE THE SAME TYPE OF CLEARINGHOUSE.
BUT FOR THOSE WHO TRACK STRAIGHT OUT OF WORK, STRAIGHT OUT OF AT THE POINT THAT THEY STOPPED GOING TO THE COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY AND THEN WENT INTO THE WORKFORCE, IT WOULD BE GOOD TO BE ABLE TO HAVE THAT KIND OF A GOOD DATA PLACE TO LOOK, THEIR ACCOUNTS TO LOOK AT THAT.
IS THERE A WAY WE CAN ADVOCATE? YEAH. I MEAN, AND AS JEREMY CAN TELL YOU, IT'S ONLY FAIRLY RECENT THAT EVEN THE TEXAS WORKFORCE COMMISSION, THE COORDINATING BOARD AND TDA HAVE BEGUN TO SHARE SOME DATA SO WE CAN MAKE SURE WE UNDERSTAND WHAT'S HAPPENING ALONG THE JOURNEY.
[02:05:04]
THE WORKFORCE PIECE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A CHALLENGE BECAUSE OF THE SELF-REPORTING AND OTHERS THAT THE JOURNEY OF THE JOB.SO THERE ARE FOLKS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT AND PAY ATTENTION TO IT.
AND WE'RE NOT THE ONLY COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY INVOLVED THAT WAS GOING.
THERE IS JUST NOW, OVER THE LAST SIX MONTHS, THERE'S BEEN SOME STEAM GAINING AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL TO POTENTIALLY TURN THAT CORNER AND MAKE IT SO THAT NATIONALLY THERE IS A POLICY TO TRACK.
BUT THERE ARE OBVIOUSLY THERE ARE PRIVACY AND SECURITY ISSUES THAT ARISE.
HAVING MORE OF THAT DATA STORED BY THE GOVERNMENT.
BUT YEAH, THAT'S DEFINITELY THAT'S WHERE WE'RE HEADED.
SO ON SLIDE 26, ON THOSE THAT ARE ON THOSE THAT ARE LEAVING WITHOUT NECESSARILY A CERTIFICATE AND AND OR TRANSFER, ETC., I THINK WE WOULD DO WELL TO ADVISE THEM.
IF YOU CAN'T PERSIST BECAUSE OF WORK LIFE ISSUES THAT GET IN THE WAY AS A MAJORITY OF OUR STUDENTS ARE PART TIME AND THEY WORK RIGHT THAT THAT WE ADVISE THEM OKAY IF YOU CAN'T PERSIST TO FINISH YOUR GOAL IF IT WAS TO TRANSFER, WHY NOT AT LEAST LEAVE US WITH A CERTIFICATE THAT FITS IN WITH THE COURSES YOU'VE ALREADY TAKEN? I THINK WE CAN IMPROVE THE ADVISING AND THAT'S PART OF WHAT JERRY WAS MENTIONING.
THIS THIS RESEARCH INFORMS THE PRACTICE OF OUR SUCCESS COACHES SO THEY CAN HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH THEIR CASELOAD TO TO TALK ABOUT, HEY, YOU KNOW, THESE ARE OPTIONS FOR YOU IN THE EVENT, FOR EXAMPLE, NOT NOT ONLY IN THE EVENT OF SOMETHING HAPPENING, BUT AS AN OPTION TO BEGIN WITH. I THINK THAT'S A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE THAN WE'VE HAD IN THE PAST OF JUST ADVISING TOWARDS AN ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE WHEN WE KNOW VERY WELL BASED ON THE DATA, THAT THAT'S NOT NECESSARILY THEIR INTENT TO BEGIN WITH.
SO HAVING THIS INFORMATION ALLOWS OUR SUCCESS COACHES TO BE BETTER INFORMED AND UTILIZE THAT WITH IN TERMS OF CONVERSATIONS WITH OR WITH THEIR STUDENTS. SO IN THIS LAST COLUMN, THAT'S NOT THE WAGE.
THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WAY, BY HAVING THE CREDENTIAL CORRECT.
SO WHAT WE'RE DOING TWEAKED OUT A LITTLE BIT.
AND I FORGOT THE CREDIT I SEE IS THE GROUP WHO WORKED ON THIS SLIDE.
SO YOU'RE GOING TO TAKE THAT MEDIAN INCOME FOR THAT PROGRAM OF A DALLAS COLLEGE GRADUATE AND YOU'RE GOING TO SUBTRACT THE 25TH PERCENTILE EARNING FOR SOMEBODY IN THAT FIELD AND ASSOCIATED FIELD.
AND THAT'S WHAT YOU GET IS THE WAGE DIFFERENTIALS.
SO THESE ARE FOLKS WHO ARE OVERPERFORMING WHAT WE WOULD EXPECT BASED ON THEIR COLLEAGUES WHO ARE OUT THERE IN THE WORKFORCE, THE AVERAGE EMPLOYEE YOUNG WORKFORCE. SO THE FIRST TWO THAT ARE SO HIGH EXPLAIN LIKE THE CARDIOVASCULAR TECH, THEY HAVE AN ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE. SO THEY WOULD EARN 49,000 MORE THAN THOSE WHO DON'T GRADUATE WITH HOURS ARE ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE IN BASIC CARDIOVASCULAR TECH.
THEY ARE MAKING $49,000 MORE THAN A NON DALLAS COLLEGE GRADUATE JUST.
IT IS GOOD. I GOT ONE SLIDE 17.
AND AS I UNDERSTAND THIS, THIS IS FOR 626 AWARDEES TRANSFERRED.
THEN WE HAVE A MUCH IS IT A MUCH LARGER OR WHAT IS THE POPULATION LOOK LIKE WHO DID NOT GET AN AWARD BUT NONETHELESS TRANSFER TO A FOUR YEAR INSTITUTION? AND BECAUSE I DIDN'T SEE THAT CAPTURED ON ANY OF THE SLIDES, BUT MY SENSE IS THAT WE GOT A WHOLE LOT OF STUDENTS COMING FOR US TO ACCUMULATE 15, 20 HOURS OF CREDITS WITH NO DESIRE, NO INTENT, AND THEY WANT TO TRANSFER A FULL YEAR.
YEAH, I'M GOING TO GO BACK TO ANOTHER GRAPHIC.
YEAH. SO SO FIRST OF ALL, WE GET ABOUT 30% COMING IN, 27% SAY I WANT TO TRANSFER.
WHAT WE'RE SEEING IS THAT WE ARE GETTING 16% OF THAT COHORT WHO STARTED WITH US.
[02:10:10]
BASIS. SO PUTTING ASIDE COHORT, PUTTING ASIDE THE YEAR THAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT PRETTY STEADY STREAM.AND WE JUST DON'T. HOW MANY OF OUR STUDENTS WOULD YOU DEFINE AS TRADITIONAL? MEANING YOU GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL, ENROLLED AT FALL SEMESTER, YOU GO FULL TIME AND YOU FINISH YOUR YOUR IF YOU WANT AN ASSOCIATE'S TO THEN TRANSFER.
YOU GET THAT WITHIN TWO YEARS.
YEAH, WE, WE REPORT ON AND I DON'T, I DON'T PARTICULARLY LIKE THE THIS.
BUT THERE IS A FIRST TIME IN COLLEGE GRADUATION RATE THAT WE REPORT THAT WE CAN DIG UP FOR YOU.
THAT IS INCREDIBLY RESTRICTIVE, THOUGH OUR POPULATION.
BUT IN SO MANY PEOPLE'S MINDS THAT ARE REALLY IGNORANT OF THE REALITY OF OUR STUDENTS THAT COME HERE, EXPECT THAT TRADITIONAL STUDENT AND THAT JUST DOESN'T EXIST FOR THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
YEAH, RIGHT AROUND FOR THE COMMUNITY COLLEGES, THAT STUDENT NEVER EXISTED.
THAT STUDENT MIGHT EXIST THOSE THAT GO DIRECTLY TO THE UNIVERSITY.
BUT THAT'S NOT A STUDENT TO THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
THEY COME FOR THAT MANY DIFFERENT REASONS.
SO THERE'S THREE, THREE PILLARS.
THERE'S A NUMBER OF THAT HERE.
SO THOSE, THOSE THINGS RIGHT THERE, WE ARE DOING ALL OF THEM.
AND THIS SLIDE REALLY DRIVES THAT POINT.
THIS TELLS THEM THE MORE ACCURATE, MORE COMPLETE STORY OF OUR STUDENTS.
YOU CHARGE THAT WE GOT 166,000 STUDENTS? THAT DOES MEAN IF SOMEBODY MIGHT HAVE HAD ONE HOUR.
ONE. ONE COURSE THROUGH JUNE 31, 2018.
CORRECT. LIKE AN AMERICAN STUDENT.
YES. BECAUSE IT HAS AN ON PRICE AS WELL.
SO THEY WILL BE PART OF THE 53,000.
I DON'T NEED THE WHOLE SHEBANG.
I'M OUT OF HERE. I GOT LIFE TO DO.
WAIT ON WHAT IT NEEDS TO BE FOR A SPECIFIC SOMETHING.
IS JUST A WAY FOR SOME OF OUR CITIZENS.
THEY HAVE LIFE TO DO. AND THEY'RE BALANCING THIS AMONG EVERYTHING ELSE IN LIFE.
WHILE IT MOVES THE NEEDLE, IT'S NOT MOVING IT ENOUGH YET.
BUT AT LEAST IF IT'S FOR AN INDIVIDUAL, IT GETS THEM OUT OF THAT POVERTY LEVEL.
AND AS YOU ALL KNOW, OUR MISSION IS TO TRANSFORM LIVES AND COMMUNITIES THROUGH HIGHER ED.
AND WE ARE TRANSFORMING THOSE LIVES AND BY EXTENSION, THE COMMUNITY.
I WENT TO THE RECEPTION THAT WE HAD WITH DOWNSIZED CORRECT THIS ON THE ON THE P-TECH STUDENT WHERE ONE OF THEM AT 20 YEARS OLD BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY GOT THROUGH US AND THE P-TECH PROGRAM IS AT AMERICAN AIRLINES.
THEY WERE WORKING FOR, I THINK LIKE AT $100,000 SALARY AND AT 20 YEARS OLD, YOU GOT THE CAR THAT HE OR SHE HE GOT THE CAR HE WANTED AND ALSO BOUGHT A HOUSE AT 20 YEARS OLD ON HIS OWN.
WHAT'S THE SECOND PART OF THAT? THAT'S IMPORTANT THAT YOU POINTED OUT TO ME BEFORE REMINDING ME OF BEFORE, IS THEY COME FROM FAMILIES.
THE AVERAGE SALARY OF THE FAMILIES OF THESE P-TECH STUDENTS IS $38,000.
THE AVERAGE SALARY OF THE P-TECH STUDENTS THAT GO INTO THE WORKFORCE IS AROUND 50,000.
SO IMMEDIATELY BEGINNING JOB, ENTRY LEVEL JOB, THEY'RE ALMOST TWICE WHAT THE FAMILY MAKES.
IF THAT'S NOT A GAME CHANGER, I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS.
[02:15:02]
AND THAT'S THEIR BEGINNING SALARY AT 18, 19, 20 YEARS OLD, AND THAT'S WHAT WE'RE DOING.SO, I MEAN, DO YOU ENVISION THAT CERTAIN SUCCESS COACHES, FOR EXAMPLE, WILL BE FOCUSING ON TRANSFER STUDENTS ONLY OR CERTAIN OTHERS WILL BE FOCUSED ON JUST AN ASSOCIATE DEGREE? OR ARE YOU SEEING THEM AS MORE GENERAL IN TERMS OF WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT, THE DIFFERENCE WITH THE PATHWAY? AND SO WE HAVE WE HAVE TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF POSITIONS.
WE HAVE A SUCCESS COACHES THAT OBVIOUSLY PROVIDE ALL AROUND SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS.
WE ALSO HAVE PATHWAY SPECIALISTS.
SO IF A STUDENT HAS, FOR EXAMPLE, HEALTH CARE, RIGHT? WE HAVE INDIVIDUALS THAT SPECIALIZE IN THOSE PATHWAYS.
SO THEY CAN HAVE THOSE CONVERSATIONS WITH STUDENTS TO SAY, HEY, THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT TO DO.
THESE ARE THE KINDS OF OBSTACLES THAT YOU MIGHT FIND AS YOU MOVE ON TO A FOUR YEAR INSTITUTION.
HOW DO WE HELP YOU OVERCOME THOSE? SO THEY ARE THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT, DIFFERENT BUT CONNECTED ROLES IN THE SUPPORT OF STUDENTS.
IN TERMS OF THE DATA THAT THAT JEREMY JUST SHARED IN THE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE AND A CERTIFICATE IS IMPORTANT FOR BOTH PATHWAY SPECIALISTS AND OUR SUCCESS COACH IS TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE.
SO WHEN YOU'RE HAVING THAT CONVERSATION AND SAY, HEY, THIS IS THIS IS A SMORGASBORD OF OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU, DON'T JUST LIMIT YOURSELF TO THE TRADITIONAL WAY OF LOOKING AT EDUCATION TO THINK THAT I JUST HAVE TO HAVE AN ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE AND I HAVE TO TRANSFER IT TO A FOUR YEAR INSTITUTION TO GET A BACCALAUREATE DEGREE.
IS THERE ARE THERE OPPORTUNITIES, WHAT YOU WANT TO DO, WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO, YOUR YOUR CURRENT SITUATION, WHETHER YOU WANT TO DO WITH YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY MOVING FORWARD. SO PROVIDING THOSE OPPORTUNITIES AND THAT INFORMATION AT THE BEGINNING WOULD BE IMPORTANT AS WELL AS WE ALSO HAVE OUR COLLEGE COACHES ON THE RECRUITMENT SIDE THAT WILL THAT HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS, WITH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.
SO SHARING THIS INFORMATION WITH THEM EARLY ON HELPS DEFINE WHAT KIND OF COURSES SHOULD I BE TAKING, WHAT KIND OF OTHER OPPORTUNITIES I PURSUE AS PART OF MAYBE SUMMER INTERNSHIPS, MAYBE SUMMER PROGRAMING, A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT THINGS.
SO IT'S NOT ONLY THE POINT HERE IS THIS IS NOT JUST RESEARCH THAT IS DONE AND HERE IT IS.
AND THIS IS WHAT WHAT HAPPENED IS THE THE ACTION PIECE THAT WILL INFORM PRACTICE MOVING FORWARD.
SO I'M GOING TO GIVE THE CHANCELLOR THE LAST WORD BECAUSE WE'RE ON A JOURNEY HERE.
BUT THE QUESTION THEN YOU CAN SAY WHATEVER HE WANTS.
I MEAN, DO YOU SEE THE ABILITY TO PROJECT SOME OF THIS DATA? INTO YOUR PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT.
YOU KNOW, THE INSTITUTION'S PERFORMANCE MANAGER.
ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO SAY TO THIS TOPIC? YEAH, I APPRECIATE THE QUESTION BECAUSE I MEAN, THE ANSWER IS YES.
JOSEPH JUST IDENTIFIED AND AND AGAIN IN WHAT SHE JUST SAID, FOR STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND THE THE SCOPE OF POSSIBILITY, THE SCOPE OF OPPORTUNITY THAT EXISTS FOR THEM, BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, WE CAN TELL STORIES OF STUDENTS THAT COME TO US AND SAY, I LOVE GRAY'S ANATOMY, SO I WANT TO BE A NURSE, BUT I DON'T LIKE BLOOD.
AND SO THEY CAN UNDERSTAND THOSE POSSIBILITIES.
AND SO FROM A ORGANIZATIONAL STANDPOINT, I THINK, YOU KNOW, AS WE HAVE DONE, THE RESTRUCTURING OF TALENT AND PLACE THAT WE BEGIN TO IDENTIFY HOW WE CAN AS PART OF OUR EVALUATION AND ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEM, TAKE A LOOK AT THAT AS AN ELEMENT TO HELP UNDERSTAND AND REWARD THAT PERFORMANCE ACCORDINGLY.
WELL, I APPRECIATE THE PRESENTATION.
I MEAN, I'M SO GLAD WE HAVE THIS KIND OF QUALITY DATA TO REALLY LOOK AT.
I MEAN, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE, I DON'T THINK UNDER OUR OWN MODEL WITHOUT ONE COLLEGE AS WELL AS THE INVESTMENTS HAVE MAY NOT AS WELL AS SOME REALLY SMART PEOPLE AND DATA ANALYSTS THAT YOU HAVE IN YOUR TEAM.
JAMIE, I THINK YOU'RE GOING TO BE BACK HERE IN FRONT OF THIS BOARD PRETTY REGULARLY.
[02:20:01]
ONE LAST QUESTION. SO WHEN WE TOTALLY TRANSITION TO WORKSPACE OR WORKDAY, WORKDAY, WILL THAT MAKE THE DATA GATHERING EVEN EASIER AND BETTER, YES OR NO? SO OFF THE CUFF, THE ABILITY OR THE OPPORTUNITY TO MOVE FROM A SYSTEM THAT'S 30 YEARS OLD AND HAS A LOT OF BAGGAGE IN IT TO MOVING INTO A NEW SYSTEM.I KNOW JIM PARKER AND LUCKIN HAVE BEEN WORKING DILIGENTLY TO MAKE SURE WE'VE GOT REALLY ROCK SOLID DATA GOING INTO WORKDAY, SO I'M VERY MUCH PARTICIPATE IN THAT OPPORTUNITY. GREAT.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THANK YOU.
IT'S 434 AND THE CORPORATE WORK IS DONE.
WE?
