NAVIGATING SUPPORT WITH THEIR OWN CHALLENGES.

[Item 1]

[00:00:19]

I'M EXTREMELY PLOWED THE EMPHASIS PLACED ON STUDENT PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH AS WE CREATED OUR LEARNER CARE MODEL.

THE SUCCESS DIVISION OF THE DELLS COLLEGE.

PSYCHOLOGICAL TEAM AND SERVICES TEAM HAS 18 LICENSED PROFESSIONALS THAT PROVIDE FREE MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING AND OTHER SUPPORT TO OUR STUDENTS.

WE PROVIDED THEM WITH COMMUNITY RESOURCES WHEN NEEDED.

AS A COLLEGE, WE INVEST IN THE WHOLE PERSON, NOT JUST THE STUDENT IN THE CLASSROOM.

AND NOW, I AM PLEASED TO INTRODUCE CHANCELLOR JUSTIN, WHO IS COMMITTED TO THE WELLNESS AND DEVELOPMENT.

ASSUMED LEADERSHIP OF THE COLLEGE MARCH 1.

HE HAS BEEN AT AN INTEGRAL MEMBER OF THE TEAM SINCE 2005.

HE IS GETTING DOUSED COLLEGE TO FULFILL ITS MISSION TRANSFORMING LIVES AND COMMUNITIES THROUGH HIGHER EDUCATION WITH A FOCUS ON EQUITY, INCLUSION, AND STUDENT SUPPORT.

I'M HAPPY TO JOIN US HERE TODAY.

PLEASE JOIN US JUSTIN LONGMAN.

>> GOOD MORNING EVERYONE.

>> COLLEGE MAY NOT SEE IN THE ROOM.

>> SO, LISTEN.

WE'VE BEEN THROUGH A LOT IN THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS.

AS INDIVIDUALS, AS A COLLEGE, AS A COMMUNITY AS A SOCIETY.

WHO AMONGST THE AS LITTLE STRESSED OUT LAST COUPLE OF YEARS? STILL, THAT IS CERTAINLY TRUE FOR OUR STUDENTS.

YOU ALL KEEP OUR STUDENTS AT THE HEART OF EVERYTHING WE DO.

>> ENOUGH TIMES WE BEEN THROUGH TOGETHER AS AN INSTITUTION.

WE FOCUS ON THE MAIN THING.

€" €" YOU ARE ALL HUMAN TALK ABOUT THE BUSINESS HERE AT THE DELLS COLLEGE.

AND CERTAINLY ACCESS TO MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES AND BREAK DOWN THOSE BARRIERS.

[00:05:05]

WE WILL AND SO MUCH THE PANDEMIC WE'VE LEARNED SO MUCH ABOUT HER STUDENTS.

IN OURSELVES.

AND WE'VE LEARNED THAT IT'S OKAY TO SAY THAT WE NEED HELP.

IT'S OKAY TO SAY THAT €" €" YOU KNOW WHAT? I JUST NEED TO TAKE A LITTLE BIT OF TIME OUT NEED SOMEBODY TO HELP ME THROUGH EVERYTHING AND GO.

AND I THINK IT MEANS A LOT AS AN INSTITUTION.

AS DOCTOR JOSEPH SAID THAT WE REALLY HAVE INVESTED HEAVILY IN PROVIDING MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES FOR OUR STUDENTS.

CERTAINLY BY HIRING THE 18 LICENSED COUNSELORS €" €" THAT'S IMPORTANT.

THE STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS.

BY PARTNERING WITH OUR FRIENDS AT METRO CARE AND OTHER MATTERS.

SO STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS TO QUALITY MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES.

AND I THINK THE THEME TODAY €" €" THE STRUGGLE ISRAEL.

BUT RESILIENCE IS MORE REAL.

I THINK THAT'S IMPORTANT AND I THINK IT'S GONNA BE A GREAT CONVERSATION TODAY WITH STUDENT PANELS AND WITH OUR SPEAKERS.

TO REALLY HELP US ONAN AND FOCUS TO TAKE THIS TIME TOGETHER TO THE TO ENSURE THAT WE ARE DOING EVERYTHING THAT WE CAN TO SUPPORT STUDENTS.

>> MARCH 2020 SHIFTED THE WORLD.

SHIFTED EACH OF US.

SO, LET'S TAKE WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS.

AND MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE PUTTING ALL THOSE LESSONS IN ACTION.

AS WE LOOK AHEAD WITH EVERYTHING THAT WE'RE DOING IT DOUSED COLLEGE.

CERTAINLY EVERYTHING AS WE TRANSITION OUR STRUCTURE THIS IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE WAS THAT WE HAD A REAL FOCUS ON STUDENT SERVICES.

BE A REAL FOCUS ON PROVIDING ACCESS TO SOME OF THOSE BARRIERS THAT I'VE TALKED A LOT ABOUT.

INCLUDE MENTAL HEALTH.

SO, YOU KNOW? AS AN INSTITUTION, WE WILL CONTINUE TO DO EVERYTHING WE CAN TO ENSURE THAT WE PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR STUDENTS.

AND THIS CONVERSATION TODAY €" €" I THINK IS THE CONVERSATION OF OUR SOCIETY TODAY.

SO, I CAN TELL YOU THAT THE LEADERSHIP TEAM HAS COMMITTED TO CONTINUING TO INVEST IN OUR MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES.

AND I CANNOT THINK OUR STUDENTS €" €" STAFF, AND TEAM ENOUGH FOR ALL THE CARE AND WHAT YOU DO YOUR WORK.

YOU KNOW? THOSE OF YOU THAT WORK IN STUDENT SERVICES DO SO BECAUSE YOU HAVE A HEART FOR OUR STUDENTS.

AND A PASSION FOR OUR STUDENTS AND I THINK THAT'S TRUE OF EVERY EMPLOYEE IT DOUSED COLLEGE.

I THINK AS WE TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE CHALLENGES TODAY €" €" I THINK WITH TO BE REALLY INTENTIONAL ABOUT ENSURE THAT STUDENTS, EMPLOYEES, OUR COMMUNITIES KNOW THAT IT'S OKAY.

AND THAT IT'S OKAY TO AGAIN, TO SAY YOU NEED HELP AND THAT I NEED SERVICES.

AND THAT WE WILL DO EVERYTHING WE CAN TO PROVIDE THE ON AN ONGOING BASIS.

SO, AGAIN, I THANK THEM IN THE STUDENT CARE COORDINATORS IN STUDENT CARE NETWORK TEAM FOR PUTTING THIS ON TODAY.

FOR CAUSING ALL OF US TO FOCUS ON THESE IMPORTANT ISSUES TODAY.

I EXPECT A ROBUST CONVERSATION THROUGH THE PRESENTATIONS AND THE SPEAKERS.

AND I REALLY DO APPRECIATE AGAIN, TAKING THE TIME JUSTICE BECAUSE TIME IS A VIABLE RESOURCE FOR ALL OF US.

THIS IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT CONVERSATION.

SO, THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING HERE AND ALL THAT YOU'RE DOING IN YOUR PARTICIPATION TODAY.

HAVE A GREAT REST OF YOUR DAY AND I APPRECIATE IT.

[APPLAUSE] >> THANK YOU DOCTOR LENNON FOR ALL THIS GREAT WORDS.

NOW I'M GONNA BE CALLING UP OUR ASSOCIATE DEAN OF COUNSELING AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES.

REVEREND DOCTOR PAMELA FOX TO THE STAGE AND SHE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THE COLLEGIATE MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS AND RESILIENCE TOPIC PORTION OF OUR CONVERSATION TODAY.

DOCTOR FOX?

[APPLAUSE] >> GOOD MORNING EVERYONE.

MY PLEASURE TO BE HERE WITH YOU THIS MORNING.

AND WE'RE GONNA TALK FOR JUST A FEW MINUTES ABOUT A VERY IMPORTANT TOPIC.

LONDON IS ALREADY TALKED WITH US ABOUT THE TOPIC OF THE DAY.

[00:10:03]

AS WE WERE COMING IN TODAY NATE AND MIKE, WHO TAUGHT COMING IN TODAY AND WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THIS IS I AM EXCITED.

I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT AM EXCITED.

SO, AS WE ARE DRIVING IN TODAY.

WHAT WE HEARD ON THE NEWS BROADCAST WAS ABOUT YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES.

AND YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES IS VERY MULTI- FACTORIAL AS I WOULD CITE FOR MY RESEARCH MINDSET.

AND SO, TODAY, WE'RE GOING TO FOCUS IN ON THE STATE OF COLLEGIATE MENTAL HEALTH.

MENTAL WELLNESS AND RESILIENCE.

AGAIN, AS WE ARE NOTING TODAY, OUR FOCUS IS GOING TO BUILD MENTAL HEALTH, WELLNESS, AND RESILIENCE PUT INTO THE COMPLEMENT OF ONE OF MY STAFF PERSONS.

SHOULD BRENDA BROWN.

WE WILL CALL HER DOCTOR SUGAR AND NOT BROWN.

COME ON NOW.

[LAUGHTER] SHE CAME UP WITH OUR HASHTAG FOR TODAY, WHICH IS RESILIENCE AT DELLS COLLEGE.

THAT WILL PREACH.

AND SO, BY MATTER OF INTRODUCTION FOR THOSE THAT I DON'T KNOW, I AM PAMELA FOX FROM A LICENSED CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER TEXAS BOARD APPROVED SOCIAL WORK SUPERVISOR.

I SERVE.

DELLS COLLEGE AS THE ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES.

OUR OFFICE AT CEDAR VALLEY CAMPUS CEDAR VALLEY.

AND I AM OG.

AND FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT DON'T KNOW WHAT OG IS €" THIS TIME FROM CHICAGO.

SUNNY SOUTH SIDE OF CHICAGO.

I SEE A TOWN IN THE HOUSE.

SO IN OG IS AN ORIGINAL GANGSTER.

WHICH I CAN GO THERE.

OF RIGHT NOW, REMAINS OLD GRANDMOTHER.

SO I CAN BE OG OR IT COULD BE ORIGINAL THIS DISH OG ORIGINAL GANGSTER.

OR I CAN BE OLD GRANDMOTHER DEPENDING ON THE DAY OF THE WEEK.

AND THE TIME OF THE DAY.

AND THE LEVEL OF THE STRESS.

I'M JUST SAYING STRATA CHICAGO'S SOUTH SIDE.

AND I AM A WIFE, MOTHER, GRANDMOTHER, MOTHER-IN-LAW, SISTER, COUSIN, AUNT, COLLEAGUE, AND MINISTRY PARTNER.

HAS-BEENS IN THE HOUSE HERE TODAY.

WHEN YOU SAY THAT? BROTHER KEVIN FOX IN THE HOUSE TODAY.

FROM NAPA.

TEXAS BEHAVIORAL HEALTH AND HIS COLLEAGUES HERE ARE IN THE HOUSE AS WELL.

AND I AM TRIBE VOCATIONAL.

I DON'T KNOW PEOPLE WHO WERE TRIBE VOCATIONAL AS A CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER AND CLINICAL RESEARCHER.

I'M SHOWING UP IN THE BACHELORS DEGREE MASTERS DEGREE IN PHD IN SOCIAL WORK RESEARCH.

COME ON SOMEBODY.

ABOUT THE SOCIAL JUSTICE BUSINESS.

I'M AN ORDAINED MINISTER IN THE CHURCH OF CHRIST RETIRED BUT ALSO THE COMMANDER IN THE SUN NAVY.

MEDICAL SERVICE PORTED OPERATED AS A MEDICAL BABY SOCIAL WORKER EXITED.

AT THE TIME, ONLY SERVE, I WAS 181 MAY BE SOCIAL WORKERS IN THE NATION.

THAT'S QUITE A STATEMENT.

AND BECAUSE OF MY SERVICE DOSES CASINO AND IS WATCHING YOU.

SO, I AM RESERVE ONE WEEKEND IN TWO MONTHS DURING THE YEAR.

MY CHILDREN WERE WATCHING ME PUT ON MY UNIFORM AND SO, AS A RESULT, THREE OF OUR CHILDREN, ONE SERVED IN THE U.S.

MARINE CORPS.

ONE SERVED IN THE ARMY.

IN ONE SERVED IN THE AIR FORCE.

AND OUR YOUNGEST CHILD, WE OFFERED HIM THE COAST GUARD AND HE SAID NO THANKS MOM.

I WANT ANY PART OF THAT.

[LAUGHTER] 'S I HOPE TEST THIS BUILDING POSITIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS SO COMMITTED TO INTERACT IN BETTER WAYS.

TO LEARN TO EXPRESS OUR THOUSAND FEELINGS ARE VERY IMPORTANT.

TO COPE WITH NEGATIVE THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS.

LOOK AT WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE WORLD TODAY IS ENOUGH TO GIVE YOU NEGATIVE THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS.

WE HAVE TO LOOK AT THAT SO WE CAN OPERATE WITH LESS EMOTIONAL DYSREGULATION BEHAVIORAL ACTING APPEARED WHICH IS A CHALLENGE FOR OUR YOUNG PEOPLE TODAY.

AND THEN WE WANT: STRESS MANAGEMENT SKILLS AND COPING STRATEGIES AND RELAXATION TECHNIQUES SO WE CAN DO IT WITH HOLISTIC HEALTH AND WELL-BEING.

WHICH IS FOR ME, SPIRIT, SOUL, AND BODY.

WITH THAT IN MIND, WE'RE GONNA HAVE A MINDFULNESS MOMENT.

WE GOT TO THE TRAFFIC, THE DALLAS MORNING TRAFFIC.

I GOT HERE SAFE AND SOUND.

IT'S A GOOD THING.

LET US TAKE A MINUTE TO REFLECT AND QUIETLY SAY TO YOURSELF, THE SERENITY PRAYER.

WHICH EXITS THERE, GRANT US THE SERENITY TO CHANGE THINGS THAT WE CANNOT CHANGE.

CHANGE THE THINGS WE CAN AND WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.

AND THOSE OF YOU, CLOSE YOUR EYES FOR JUST A MINUTE.

WE ARE TO DO SOME DEEP BREATHING.

GOOD PART OF MINDFULNESS.

WITH YOUR EYES CLOSED.

[00:15:01]

GONNA SLOWLY INHALE THROUGH YOUR NEWS.

TAKE THE BREATH LOAD TO YOUR BELLY BUTTON.

HOLD IT.

AND THEN SLOWLY EXHALE EVERY MOUTH.

MAKING A LITTLE WISHING NOISE IS SEVERE CONTRIBUTE MOUTH.

WE CAN DO THAT.

IT'S IMPORTANT IN TERMS OF RELEASING STRESS AND TENSION.

BECAUSE STRESS AND TENSION CANNOT COEXIST WITH RELAXATION.

IT JUST DOES NOT GO TOGETHER.

WE WANT TO BE MINDFUL ABOUT THOSE KINDS OF THINGS.

THE OTHER IS A DEEP BREATHING FOR STRESS MANAGEMENT AND RELAXATION WE'RE GONNA FOCUS ON THE COLLEGIATE STATE OF MENTAL WELLNESS.

AS WE MENTIONED, STRUGGLES REAL.

I GOT THIS TITLE FROM OUR YOUNGEST SON WHO SAID, MY STRUGGLE IS REAL.

WHAT IS YOUR STRUGGLE MY BROTHER? WE LIVE IN A NICE HOUSE IN A NICE NEIGHBORHOOD.

WHAT IS YOUR STRUGGLE? HE SHOULD WITH ME WITH SOME OF THE STRUGGLES WERE.

AND FOR HIM, THE STRUGGLE IS NOT.

THE STRUGGLES THAT WERE THE CASE WHEN I WAS A TWENTYSOMETHING TEST €" WHICH WAS A LONG TIME AGO IS VERY DIFFERENT FROM WHAT TH YOUNG PEOPLE TODAY ARE GOING THROUGH.

SO, MAKES ME WONDER DO THEY HAVE THE SAME COPING SKILLS THAT WE HAD BACK IN THE DAY? WOULD THEY HAVE THE PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS? DO THEY HAVE THE STRESS MANAGEMENT SKILLS THAT I HAD WERE COMMON SENSE SKILLS? IS IT COMMON SENSE IS NOT COMMON.

GIVES YOU SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.

AND DO THEY HAVE THE LIFE SKILLS? I KNOW SOME OF THE YOUNG PEOPLE DON'T KNOW HOW TO CHANGE A TIRE OR WASH CLOTHES.

DON'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE FOOD.

DON'T KNOW HOW TO GO GROCERY SHOPPING.

AND WHOSE ISSUES THAT? IS THE ISSUE, BUT IT'S OUR ISSUE TO TEACH.

SO, PART OF THE JOB OF PARENTING IS TO LOVE, NURTURE, MODEL, AND TEACH OUR KIDS.

SO WE OTHERS HAVE TO BE ABOUT THE BUSINESS.

SO, THE STRUGGLES REAL THE WORDS OF MY ANCESTOR AND LIBERATION, FREDERICK DOUGLASS.

HE SAID BACK IN 1857 JUSTICE IF THERE IS NO STRUGGLE, THERE IS IN PROGRESS.

SO, THERE HAS TO BE SOME STRUGGLE WITH HER TO BE SOME MOVEMENT.

ALSO THE WORDS OF THE GRAMMY AWARD WINNING SINGER AND SONGWRITER LAUREN HEAL, HOW ARE YOU GONNA WIN? IF YOU AIN'T RIGHT WITH THAT? SO, WE TO GET RIGHT WITH THAT.

WE HAVE TO SHOW THAT WITH OUR YOUNG PEOPLE.

THAT THEY HAVE TO GET RIGHT WITH THEM.

WE HAVE TO GET RIGHT WITH THEM AS WELL.

BECAUSE OF IT TO BE ROLE MODELS WHAT WE ARE HOPING FOR WITH OUR YOUNG PEOPLE.

SO GOOD, STRUGGLES REAL AND WHAT WE KNOW IS THAT I DOUSE COLLEGE STUDENTS FACULTY AND STAFF AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS HERE IN THE HOUSE TODAY.

THEY KNOW THAT IT'S HARD TO BALANCE COLLEGE WORK RELATIONSHIPS AND OTHER LIVES RESPONSIBILITIES.

BUT THE QUESTION IS WHAT IS OUR MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS RIESLINGS FIT INTO THAT EQUATION? AND AGAIN, AS WE ARTIE MENTIONED.

IT HAS ALREADY BEEN MENTIONED HOW YOU WIN IF YOU AIN'T RIGHT WITH THEM? STATISTICS INDICATE FROM A RECENT REPORT DECEMBER 7 2021 FROM THE U.S.

SURGEON GENERAL, DOCTOR DAVID MURPHY SAID TODAY'S GENERATION OF ADOLESCENTS AND YOUNG ADULTS ARE EXPERIENCING DEVASTATING DEVASTATING MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AND CHALLENGES IS EXACERBATED BY THE COVID-19 CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC CRISIS.

WHICH WAS IDENTIFIED IN 2020 HERE IN THE UNITED STATES.

THE SURGEON GENERAL CITED THAT THERE HAVE BEEN SIGNIFICANT INCREASES IN SULFUR AND ANXIETY.

DEPRESSION ALONG WITH A WHOLE LOT MORE EMERGENCY ROOM VISITS FOR MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES.

THESE EMERGENCY ROOM VISITS ARE ALSO FOR SUICIDE ATTEMPTS, DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, AND EATING DISORDERS WE FORGET ABOUT EATING DISORDERS FOR THE REAL DEAL ISSUE.

THINK MUCH AND EATING TOO LITTLE.

ALL THESE THINGS HAVE INCREASED SINCE 2019.

IN THAT REGARD, I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU A PROP FOR TODAY.

ENTER THE PROP FOR TODAY IS A T-SHIRT, WHICH COMES FROM THE METALS FOUNDATION AND THE OKAY TO SAY PROGRAM.

THE T-SHIRT SAYS HOW ARE YOU REALLY? REALLY? THIS IS NOT OKAY.

IT IS NOT OKAY TO SAY THAT YOU ARE OKAY.

WHAT WE KNOW FROM THE SURGEON GENERAL'S REPORT THAT THERE ARE MANY FACTORS THAT SHAPE THE MENTAL HEALTH OF OUR YOUNG PEOPLE.

THEY INCLUDE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC INEQUALITIES, DISCRIMINATION, RACISM, MIGRATION, MEDIA.

TECHNOLOGY, POPULAR CULTURE.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES.

AS WE WERE COMING IN TODAY ON THE NEWS, THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT SOME OF OUR YOUNG PEOPLE STRESS OUT ABOUT POLITICS.

WE THOUGHT THEY WERE NOT LOOKING AT POLITICS.

BUT THEY HAVE A SENSE TO WHAT'S GOING ON IN TERMS OF CURRENT EVENTS.

EVEN SOME THE CLASSES I'VE BEEN ABLE TO OBSERVE AT DOUSE COLLEGE, MANY OF THE

[00:20:01]

FACULTY MEMBERS START OFF THE CLASS FOR FIVE MINUTES POSING A QUESTION TO THE STUDENTS.

WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON CURRENT EVENTS? AND I OVERHEARD SOME OF THOSE CONVERSATIONS PRETTY DEEP CONVERSATIONS.

VERY THOUGHT-PROVOKING, BECAUSE THEY ARE DOING THE WORK FOR THEIR PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE WORLD.

SOME ISSUES NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY.

ACCESS TO GREEN SPACES.

WE HAD EARTH DAY WILL DAYS AGO.

ACCESS TO GREEN SPACES VERY IMPORTANT.

ACCESS TO HEALTHY FOOD, HOUSING, HEALTHCARE, ETC. RELATIONSHIPS WITH PEERS AND OTHERS.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEIR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS.

SIBLINGS AND FAMILY MEMBERS.

ACCESS TO MENTAL-HEALTH SERVICES.

AND ALSO AGE, GENETICS, RACE, ETHNICITY, GENDER, SEXUAL ORIENTATION.

DISABILITY, BELIEFS, KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDES AND COPING SKILLS.

ALL THESE THINGS MADE THE LIST FOR THE SURGEON GENERAL.

LOOKING AT IT FROM A SYSTEM STANDPOINT.

AND THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR ME AS A SOCIAL WORKER AND OTHERS.

WE THINK IN TERMS OF SYSTEMS THINKING.

THE SOCIETY, THE ENVIRONMENT, THE COMMUNITY.

THE FAMILY, AND THE INDIVIDUAL.

SO, MICROSYSTEMS, MESO SYSTEMS €" €" MACRO SYSTEMS. SO, THE REASONS FOR THESE MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS ARE VERY COMPLEX.

VERY COMPLEX.

GIVEN EFFECTIVE HEALTH BRAIN CHEMISTRY AFFECTS THE BEHAVIORS OF ADOLESCENTS AND YOUNG PEOPLE.

THE CURRENT RESEARCH SAYS THE BRAIN IS NOT FULLY FORMED UNTIL ABOUT AGE 25.

SO, WE SHOULD HAVE NO LOW-LEVEL EXPECTATIONS OF PEOPLE UNTIL THEY ARE 25 YEARS OLD, RIGHT? I DON'T KNOW.

[LAUGHTER] WE KNOW ABOUT BRAIN CHEMISTRY IS VERY IMPORTANT STUFF.

BUT ALSO INELUCTABLE RELATIONSHIPS WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA.

POPULAR CULTURE AND SO MUCH MORE.

AND ALL THESE FACTORS AND THEN SOME CAN LEAD CAN LEAD AND LEAVE VULNERABLE ADOLESCENTS AND ADULTS FEELING HOPELESS AND HELPLESS.

SO, THIS IS STATING WHAT THE PROBLEM IS.

WE WILL LOOK FOR SOME SOLUTIONS BECAUSE THE PROBLEM JUST GETS DEEPER AND DEEPER AS WE GO ON AND EXPLORE.

IN 2020, REGARDING COLLEGIATE MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS.

THE OUTLOOK AGAIN BECAUSE VERY TROUBLING.

GIVEN THE ISSUES OF MENTAL HEALTH STIGMA THIS DISH ALSO ISSUES OF SHAME €" AS THEY SAY THAT SHAME IS DISTINGUISHED FROM GUILT.

GUILT ESSAYS FEELING BADLY ABOUT SOMETHING YOU'VE DONE.

AND SHAME HAS TO DO WITH FEELING BADLY ABOUT WHO YOU ARE.

THEY SAY SHAME IS A SELF-ESTEEM ISSUE.

THAT WHOLE SHAME PIECE IS VERY IMPORTANT.

SHAME AND STIGMA ARE ISSUES IS EXACERBATED BY THE CORONAVIRUS PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS €" €" THE RELATED MENTAL HEALTH PANDEMIC IF YOU WILL.

RACIAL RECKONING COULD ALL THIS WENT ON IN 2020 AND ECONOMIC HARDSHIPS AND SO MUCH MORE.

ALL THIS WAS GOING ON SIMULTANEOUSLY IN 2020.

AS WE KNOW AS MENTAL HEALTH AND HIGHER EDUCATION PROFESSIONALS, WE KNOW THAT COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS HERE IN THE U.S.

HERE IN TEXAS, AND EVEN HERE AT DALLAS COLLEGE ARE STRUGGLING WITH A VARIETY OF THESE ISSUES.

THIS IS SOME VERY INTERESTING STATISTICS FROM THE CENTER FOR COLLEGIATE MENTAL HEALTH.

THIS IS WHAT THEY CALL THE SEA'S, WHICH IS THE COUNSELING CENTER ASSESSMENT OF PSYCHOLOGICAL SYMPTOMS AND THIS IS RECENT DATA FROM 2021.

SO YOU CAN SEE AT A GLANCE WHAT SOME OF THE INTERESTING STATISTICS ARE AS WE LOOK AT THE CATEGORIES OF DEPRESSION.

AND ACADEMIC DISTRESS.

AND ANGER AND FRUSTRATION.

GENERALIZED ANXIETY.

EATING DISORDERS.

FAMILY DISTRESS, SOCIAL ANXIETY.

ALCOHOL AND THE OVERALL DISTRESS INDEX.

I WILL POINT OUT JUST FOR YOUR PERUSAL, ACADEMIC DISTRESS.

SEE HOW IT WENT UP IN THE CYSTO BETWEEN 20? AND SO, I'M WONDERING WHY YOU COME DOWN? AND PERHAPS A CAME DOWN WOMAN WENT BACK TO IN PERSON LEARNING.

SO, SOMETHING ABOUT VIRTUAL IS GOOD.

IT WORKS IF YOU WORK IT.

[LAUGHTER] THAT IN PERSON LEARNING IS BETTER.

BECAUSE EVEN LIKE TODAY THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE HERE IN THIS ROOM THAT IT HAD A LOT OF REALLY GREAT VIRTUAL MEETINGS WITH.

THERE ARE PEOPLE IN THIS ROOM WHO'VE NEVER MET IN PERSON UNTIL TODAY.

SO IT'S NICE TO SEE HUMANS.

AND KNOW THAT THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT AVATARS.

THAT THESE ARE REAL PEOPLE.

AND THEY ARE NICE PEOPLE.

AND THEN SMILING FACES.

ONLY OF CONVERSATION.

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT IN TERMS OF LOOKING AT THAT.

THE ACADEMIC DISTRESS.

INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, ALCOHOL WENT DOWN.

IT'S THAT ABOUT? MAYBE THEY WANT TO LEAD? [LAUGHTER] WE WENT OUT.

ALCOHOL WENT DOWN.

[LAUGHTER] REFER THEM TO MY PEOPLE OVER HERE.

[00:25:01]

COME ON SOMEBODY.

CAN I GET A WITNESS OVER HERE? FAMILY DISTRESS? IT IS INTERESTING IT WENT UP BECAME A LITTLE BIT DOWN.

THE THING WANTED TO POINT OUT TO.

DURING 2020, 2021, UNTIL THE KIDS €" JUST A LITTLE BIT TO THE BIGGER KIDS WENT BACK TO SCHOOL.

THE KIDS WERE AT HOME WITH THE PARENTS.

MY HEART JUST AS I HAVE LITTLE KIDS AT HOME.

PRAISE THE LORD.

REMEMBER, I'M OG.

TOUGH ON KIDS.

BUT I DON'T HAVE LITTLE KIDS OF HOPE IN MY HEART WENT OUT TO THE PARENTS THAT ARE WORKING FROM HOME.

AND CONSIDER TRYING TO TEACH THE KIDS FROM HOME.

HOW DID THEY DO THAT? ALRIGHT ALRIGHT.

ALL RIGHT.

COME ON NOW.

THROUGH HOW THEY DID THAT.

MY HEART GOES OUT TO Y'ALL WHO WERE ABLE TO DO THAT SUCCESSFULLY.

THE FAMILY DISTRESS WHEN A LITTLE BIT IN 2020.

KINDA MELLOW THAT WHEN THE KIDS WENT BACK TO SCHOOL.

THE THING IS WITH THAT POINT SOMETIMES PARENTS GET ANOTHER KIDS AND THEY DIDN'T REALLY KNOW THEIR KIDS.

BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT THEY GOT THEM UP AND THEY WENT OFF TO SCHOOL PER DAY WERE GONE FOR SIX HOURS WE CAME BACK AND ATE FOOD AND WENT TO BED.

SO, DURING PANDEMIC, THE KIDS HAD TO GET TO KNOW THESE KIDS BRITTNEY SAID WHO IS THIS PERSON MARLEY IN MY HOUSE? WHAT ARE THEY LEAVING? I DON'T LIKE THEM.

THAT'S MY SON.

EXCUSE ME.

SO, SIGNIFICANTLY HERE, HE SEES SOCIAL ANXIETY WHEN OUT.

SO, WE GOT BACK TO THE PEOPLE.

BUT THEN ANXIETY GOES UP BECAUSE WE ALSO PEOPLE SKILLS.

WE FORGOT HOW TO TALK TO PEOPLE.

WE SAID €" THIS STUMBLING AND BUMBLING BECAUSE HE CANNOT FIGURE OUT WORDS.

IN TALKING HUMANS RIGHT NOW.

WITHOUT A MASK.

THIS IS INTERESTING.

THAT MASK.

SO, WILL BE NOT TO IS THAT RECOMMENDED HEALTH AND WELLNESS SOLUTIONS PRETTY STIGMATIZING.

MENTAL HEALTH HAS TO DO WITH THAT IT'S OKAY TO NOT BE OKAY.

AND WE NEED TO BE OKAY WITH THAT.

AND THEN SOME OF THE RECOMMENDATIONS HAVE TO DO WITH NORMALIZING MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS.

DO STIGMATIZING AND NORMALIZING.

JUST LIKE IT'S OKAY TO SAY OKAY, IF I HAD TYPE II DIABETES, WHICH I DON'T, I PREDIABETES, OBAMA BETTER NOW.

BUT, IF ONE HAD DIABETES OR EPILEPSY OR WHATEVER, YOU CHOOSE SELF DISCLOSE THAT.

HER CANCER.

AND YOU'RE OKAY WITH THAT.

BECAUSE YOU'RE SELF DISCLOSING.

IT IS NOT OKAY.

EVEN STILL NOW.

TO DISCLOSE THAT YOU HAVE DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY AND STRESS AND BIPOLAR DISORDER.

EATING DISORDER.

WE'RE GOING DISORDER.

IT'S NOT OKAY TO SAY THAT IN PUBLIC ON SOCIAL MEDIA.

YOU HAVE TO KEEP ON WORKING ON NORMALIZING THE STIGMATIZING.

IN THE SO, SOME SUGGESTIONS TO DO THAT, BY BEING ACTIVE, HEALTHIER EATING, ACTIVE, I GO BACK TO BEING ACTIVE.

WITH BEING ACTIVE, DOESN'T MEAN IF WE GO TO THE FITNESS CENTER AND SPEND THE TIME AND MONEY.

WE DON'T HAVE IT LIKE THAT.

ALTHOUGH WE DID SAVE SOME MONEY OVER THE COURSE OF.20.

[LAUGHTER] WE DID DO THAT.

AND WE SAVED ON STUDENT LOANS.

EXCUSE ME PLEASE.

BY BEING ACTIVE IN BS AS SIMPLE AS GOING FOR WALK.

RIDING A BIKE.

GOING SWIMMING, DEFINITELY LIKE TO DO.

WE HAVE TO GET THE BODY MOVING WHAT THAT DOES IS IT DECREASES YOUR STRESS HORMONES.

IN DECREASES DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY.

IT'S A WIN-WIN.

THE BODIES GETTING IN SHAPE.

AND YOU ARE DISTRESSING.

IT'S GOING FOR THE WALK WITH THE DOG.

WHICH I ENCOURAGE YOU, FEEL THE DOG OR CAT.

DOGS ARE BETTER THOUGH.

HEALTHIER EATING.

SO, THE PROBLEM IS FOR SOME PEOPLE THAT THEY'VE NOTICED OVER THE COURSE OF 2020 AND SO FORTH AND SO ON THAT THEY WERE NOT EATING RIGHT.

THEY HAD DUMPED TOO MUCH ACCESS TO THE FRIDGE.

IT MINUTES RIGHT THERE.

LAPTOP IS HERE.

FRIDGE IS THERE.

WE ARE NOT GOING THERE AND GET SOMETHING? SO, WHAT HAPPENED IS THAT SOME PEOPLE DID END UP WITH TYPE II DIABETES.

IS THERE EATING SUGAR IN SEPARATE CAKES AND COOKIES AND PIES.

ALL SORTS OF SUITES AND WHAT THEY WERE DOING WAS SELF-MEDICATION DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY.

THERE FOOD.

BECAUSE SUGAR IS A DRUG, YOU KNOW THAT? SUGAR IS A DRUNKARD WITH DO HEALTHIER EATING PIT WHICH MEANS DRINKING WATER.

WATER IS A DETOX BEVERAGE IF YOU WILL.

SO DRINKING MORE WATER GETTING QUALITY SLEEP.

EASIER SAID THAN DONE.

ESPECIALLY IF YOU STRUGGLE WITH INSOMNIA AS I DO.

SOMETIMES.

GETTING A GOOD QUALITY SLEEP BECAUSE WHAT THAT DOES IS YOU GET A CHANCE TO RECHARGE YOUR BATTERIES.

YOUR BODY'S BATTERIES.

BATTERIES AND THAT'S A GOOD THING.

TAKING MEDICATION AS PRESCRIBED.

[00:30:02]

REDUCING THE RISK OF HARM BY SEEKING PRACTICING SELF-CARE AND SELF COMPASSION.

PRACTICING SCHOOL WORK AND LIFE BALANCE.

AGAIN, EASIER SAID THAN DONE.

WE HAVE TO WORK ON THAT.

ESTABLISHING BOUNDARIES BOUNDARIES AND SETTING LIMITS WITH PEOPLE AND ACTIVITIES.

ALL PEOPLE IN YEARS.

INFLUENCE ARE NOT ON YOUR TEAM.

OKAY? YOU COULD IN NEGATIVE NAYSAYERS AND NEGATIVE FOLKS IN YOUR SPACE.

AND YOU'VE GOT A SOCIALLY DISTANCE YOURSELF FROM THOSE PEEPS.

THEY DO NOT HAVE YOUR BEST INTEREST AT HEART.

SO, IF YOU HAVE TO BE WITH THOSE NEGATIVE PEOPLE €" €" YOU KEEP IT SHORT.

HELLO, HOW ARE YOU? HAVE A GOOD DAY.

AND THEN YOU LEAVE.

YOU GO TO WORK ON THAT.

SO, TO SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE PEOPLE PLACES AND THINGS.

PRACTICE HEALTHY COPING AND STRESS MANAGEMENT WE PRACTICE TO BE LOOKING AT THE SERENITY PRAYER AND DEEP BREATHING.

AND THEN CONNECTING WITH POSITIVE SUPPORT PEOPLE.

SO, HE HERE THE DOLLS COLLEGE COLLEGE COUNSELING AND ECOLOGICAL SERVICES CONTINUES TO FOCUS ON THE STIGMATIZING MENTAL ILLNESS.

AND NORMALIZING MENTAL HOME THIS IS OUR BUSINESS.

THE OTHER THING I WANT TO ADD TO THE CONVERSATION IS CALLED THE PAIR OF ACES.

THIS IS NOT A CARD GAME.

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.

THIS IS PSYCHOLOGICAL.

SOCIOLOGICAL THAT KIND OF IMPORTANCE.

IS IT TALKED ABOUT ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCE.

NEVERS COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENTS.

THE PAIR OF ACES.

THIS IS A DEPICTION OF THE PAIR OF ACES.

ESPECIALLY DURING COVID-19.

LOOKING AT THIS ADVERSE COMMUNITY EXPERIENCES.

LISTED ON THAT TREE.

TREE AS MANY BRANCHES.

THINGS SUCH AS LACK OF ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY.

REMOTE WORK IN EDUCATION TECHNOLOGIES.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.

HOUSING INSTABILITY.

FOOD INSECURITY.

LACK OF ACCESS TO PRIMARY CARE AND SCREENING.

UNEMPLOYMENT AND LACK OF PAID LEAVE.

HIGHER RATES OF RISK FACTORS TO KELLY.

ADVERSE COMMUNITY EXPERIENCES.

BUT THE ROOT CAUSE IF YOU WILL, IF YOU LOOK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TREE €" €" POVERTY.

INCRIMINATION.

COMMUNITY DISRUPTION.

LACK OF OPPORTUNITY.

ECONOMIC MOBILITY AND SOCIAL CAPITOL.

WAREHOUSING QUALITY AND AFFORDABILITY.

THERE WAS A PERSON I THINK RUNNING FOR OFFICE IN A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO AND HE SAID HIS QUOTE FOR HIS CAMPAIGN WAS THE RENT IS TOO DAMN HIGH.

HE RAN ON THAT AND HE DID NOT WIN, BUT HE JUST WANTED TO PUT THAT OUT THERE.

IF YOU LOOK AT THE RENT RIGHT NOW, IT'S TOO DAMN THAN VIOLENCE, THE ISSUE OF VIOLENCE.

JUST UNPACKED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE PAIR BASIS, WE KNOW THAT IT CAN LEAD TO CHILDHOOD AND ADULTHOOD TRAUMA.

LOOKING AT THIS ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES.

ROUTES ABUSE GROWING UP IN A FAMILY WHERE THERE IS MENTAL HEALTH OR SUBSTANCE ABUSE ISSUES.

TOXIC STRESS ISSUES, THE BRAIN CHEMISTRY AND BRAIN DEVELOPMENT AND AFFECTS HOW THE BODY RESPONDS TO STRESS.

IT CAN ALSO LEAD TO ADULT CHRONIC HEALTH PROBLEMS. MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES.

ON THIS AND SUBSTANCE ISSUES AND ON THE ADVERSE COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENT PIECE.

HIGH CONCENTRATION OF POVERTY AND VIOLENCE.

BIG ISSUES.

LOCAL ACCESS TO RESOURCES.

FOOD STORES.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION EDUCATION HEALTHCARE.

MENTAL HEALTH AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH, EMPLOYMENT JOBS.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL SUPPORT.

AGAIN, BEING HIS NATIVE CHICAGO.

I SHARE MY COLLEAGUES AND FRIENDS HERE IN TEXAS.

I CAME FROM CHICAGO AND SAID I LOVE CHICAGO.

IT'S GREAT.

DEEP DISH PIZZA IN DOWNTOWN CHICAGO.

AND LAKE MICHIGAN AND EVERYTHING ELSE.

AND I SAID OKAY.

SO WHAT ABOUT THE SOUTH AND WEST SIDE? WE WANT TO TALK ABOUT SOUTHSIDE.

YOU ONLY WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE WEST SIDE.

THAT'S WHERE THERE'S A WHOLE LOT OF ISSUES GOING ON.

DOWNTOWN CHICAGO, VERY IMPRESSED WITH THAT AND EVERYTHING CHICAGO HAS TO OFFER.

BUT A LOT OF URBAN AREAS, IT'S THE KIND LIKE THAT.

PEOPLE SAY HERE LOCALLY SELF-DOUBTS, THAT MEANS SOMETHING? THAT MEANS SOMETHING.

WEST DALLAS.

THAT MEANS SOMETHING.

DOWNTOWN DALLAS, OH, OH, YEAH.

SO, WITH TO BE MINDFUL ABOUT THAT.

BUT IT ALSO LEADS US TO ISSUES ABOUT SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH.

WE LOOK AT THE PSYCHOSOCIAL CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENTS.

WHERE PEOPLE ARE BORN, LIVED AND WORKED IN PLAIN WORSHIP.

AND AGE.

AND ALL THESE FACTORS CAN AFFECT A WIDE RANGE OF HEALTH, FUNCTIONING QUALITY OF LIFE OUTCOMES AND RISK.

VERY IMPORTANT, WE TALKED ABOUT THE PAIR OF ACES, WITH TALK ABOUT SOCIAL

[00:35:01]

DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH.

SOME OF THE DOMAINS WITH THIS HAVE TO DO WITH ECONOMICS, EDUCATION, HEALTH CARE ACCESS, QUALITY NEIGHBORHOOD IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT.

SOCIAL AND COMMUNITY CONTEXT.

WE THINK ABOUT THIS RELATED TO HER STUDENTS HERE AT DALLAS COLLEGE.

MANY OF OUR STUDENTS ARE DEALING WITH ECONOMIC ISSUES.

IT MIGHT NOT TELL YOU, BUT THEY ARE.

DEALING WITH ACT EDUCATION ACCESS AND WE MAKE THAT AFFORDABLE FOR THEM HERE.

HEALTHCARE ACCESS WE MAKE IT ACCESSIBLE FOR THEM HERE TO BECAUSE WITH HEALTH SERVICES.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT WE ARE TRYING TO HELP THAT IS BEST WE CAN WITH OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS.

AND IN THE SOCIAL AND COMMUNITY CONTEXT AGAIN, WITH THE HELP OF OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS.

SO, THE OTHER EXPECTS OF THE SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH, SAFE HOUSING TRANSPORTATION AND NEIGHBORHOODS.

DISCRIMINATION AND VIOLENCE.

EDUCATION AND JOB OPPORTUNITIES AND INCOME.

ACCESS TO NUTRITIOUS FOODS.

OTHER NOT FOOD DESERTS? FOOD DESERTS ARE REAL THING.

I WAS SHARING WITH THE COLIC THAT I THINK THE OTHER DAY THAT THERE ARE SOME NEIGHBORHOODS THAT DON'T HAVE THE GROCERY STORE.

THEN THE FAST FOOD.

THEY DON'T HAVE ANY GROCERY STORE PIT WAS THAT ABOUT? ACCESS TO PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, OPPORTUNITIES, CAN YOU RIDE YOUR BIKE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD? IS IT SAFE ENOUGH TO DO THAT? POLLUTED AIR AND WATER.

THINK ABOUT FLINT MICHIGAN.

AS AN EXAMPLE.

AND LANGUAGE AND LITERACY SKILLS.

WHICH BRINGS US TO A LIVED EXPERIENCE, A PAIR OF ACES WITH EXPERIENCED NARRATIVE.

AND IN THIS STORY, FOR THIS PERSON.

CHILDHOOD AND ADOLESCENT NARRATIVE FROM THE STRUGGLES REAL FOR THIS PERSON.

THIS PERSON IS A CHILD WAS A SURVIVAL OF RACISM, COLORS HIM AND BULLYING.

AT THE AGE OF 13 DISTRICTS THIS PERSON WAS HEARTBROKEN ABOUT THE SESSION NATION OF REVEREND DOCTOR AND MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. AT 15, THIS PERSON WAS ALMOST SEXUALLY ASSAULTED AT KNIFE POINT.

BY STRANGER.

THE ADULT NARRATIVE FOR THIS PERSON IS AGAIN LOOKING AT THE STRUGGLES REAL.

22, DISPERSANT WAS IN TROUBLE AT KNIFE POINT BY STRANGER.

AT 28, DISPERSANT WAS ON WAS MURDERED AT GUNPOINT BY HER FIRST HUSBAND.

CHICAGO POLICE OFFICERS.

AT 30, DISPERSANT WAS THE DIVORCED MOTHER OF THREE CHILDREN.

SO, THIS PERSON WAS A PERSON WOULD WITH DEPRESSION, ANXIETY STRESS, COMPLEX, LOW SELF-ESTEEM NEGATIVE THINKING AND HOUSING AID SECURITY.

AND PERSONAL AND FINANCIAL BANKRUPTCY.

WHICH BRINGS US AGAIN TO THE ISSUE OF HOW ARE YOU REALLY? HOW ARE YOU REALLY? SO, THIS PERSON WAS NOT IN A SPACE.

AND THAT LITTLE GIRL TEENAGER, THE YOUNG ADULT WAS ME.

ALL THOSE THINGS THAT HE MENTIONED HAPPEN TO ME PERSONALLY.

AND SO, WHAT I LEARNED THROUGH ALL THAT EXPERIENCE HOW ARE YOU REALLY? IS THAT IN ORDER TO WIN I HAD TO GET RIGHT WITH THAT.

IN ORDER TO WIN, I HAD TO GET RIGHT WITH THEM.

SO, THAT'S THE WAY THAT I JUST TOLD YOU MOMENTS AGO I'VE NEVER SHARED IN PUBLIC BEFORE.

IN THIS WAY.

YOU'RE THE FIRST TO HEAR THE STORY.

THE TOTALITY OF THE STORY.

I DIDN'T THINK OF GETTING A CLUE TELLING THE STORY.

FALLEN OUT IN THE FLOOR.

BUT APPRECIATE YOUR LISTENING TO THE STORY BECAUSE THE STRUGGLE IS REALLY REAL.

HAPPENED TO REAL PERPER €" IS THIS HEAVENLY.

IN ORDER FOR ME TO GET REAL, IN ORDER FOR ME TO GET RIGHT WITH THEM AND TO UNDERSTAND MY LIFE UNMANAGEABILITY AND MY NEED FOR EMPOWERMENT.

EDDIE COME TO BELIEVE THAT A HIGHER POWER COULD RESTORE ME TO CLEAR THINKING.

I DID TURN MY LIFE AND MY WILL OVER TO A HIGHER POWER.

I DO CELEBRATE MY FAITH IN GOD MY FAITH IN CHURCH AND SOCIAL JUSTICE MINISTRY THE I.

THE LITTLE IS MY FRIEND AND FAMILY SUPPORT.

IF THE REACH OF PEOPLE.

YOU CANNOT JUST STAY IN YOUR LITTLE CLOSET ALL BY YOURSELF.

IF THE COME OUT AND REACH OUT FOR HELP.

GET INDIVIDUAL FAMILY THERAPY.

I CAN PURSUE MY CAREER OF HELPING PROFESSIONAL.

FOR ME, THE KEY, A MINORITY KIND OF PERSON.

ASK MR. FOX.

I HAVE A HOUSE FULL BOOKS.

I LOVE BOOKS.

SO, THE KEY FOR ME WAS EDUCATION.

EDUCATION.

EDUCATION, EDUCATION.

SO COMMENSURATE WITH OUR DALLAS COLLEGE STUDENTS WITH OUR STAFF.

EVERYBODY I KNOW.

THE KEY IS EDUCATION FOR REAL FOR REAL.

SO, ALL THAT LED ME TO THIS.

AS I SAID, I WAS COMMANDER OF THE U.S.

NAVY RESERVES.

IN GRADUATED FROM UTA CLASS OF 2016 I SHARE WITH WHEN A COLLEGE HERE THIS MORNING.

I WENT INTO UTA THREE PROGRAM MOST FIRST UNDERGRADUATE IN THE CLASS OF 10.

[00:40:02]

AT THE TIME, THE FULL-TIME EMPLOYEE MIGHT HELP.

FULL-TIME PHD STUDENT.

FIRST UNDERGRADUATE MY CLASS.

AND SO, I HAD TO TAKE LIKE 4 MILLION STATISTICS COURSES.

[CHEERING] I SAID Y'ALL ARE TRYING TO KILL A SISTER PRETTY TAKE THE DOG ON GRE.

PASTORED BY THE SKIN OF MY TEETH.

AND I DID EVERYTHING THEY TOLD ME TO DO.

ROLLED THE DISSERTATION.

DOCTOR JOSEPH.

WITH A SLING ON MY ARM.

BECAUSE I JUST HAD SHOULDER SURGERY.

MISTYPING THE DISSERTATION WITH 100, SOMEBODY.

YOU CANNOT KEEP A GOOD PERSON DOWN.

IN GRADUATED SO THE SURGERY WAS IN AUGUST.

SLING CAME OFF IN OCTOBER.

THINK IT WAS OCTOBER.

DEFENDED IN OCTOBER.

GRADUATING IN DECEMBER.

2016.

AND SO, WE RELENTED UP IN THE GRADUATION SIMPLY CALL OR SOMETHING LIKE THIS.

I SAID WHERE MY SUPPOSED TO SIT TO THE PROCTOR? HE SAID LISA RICHTER.

SEEK ONE.

ROLE ONE.

I SAID OKAY.

SOMEBODY.

,.

IN MARCH MY WAY I WANT TO GET TO THE BIG GOBLET AUDITORIUM, WAS PLAYING THE SONG, THE THEME FROM SOUL TRAIN.

YOU'LL PUT THIS SISTER AT THE FRONT LINE OF THE SOUL TRAIN.

THE OJI FROM CHICAGO.

I HAD A GREAT TIME.

IT A GREAT TIME.

SO, THE POINT OF THE MATTER IS THAT RESILIENCE IS REAL.

I WAS SHARING WITH THE COLIC THIS MORNING DISCLOSURE PERSONAL.

TO BECAUSE ON THE OJI.

STARTED THE PHD PROGRAM I WAS 58 USUAL.

FINISHING THE PHD PROGRAM AT 61.

DON'T TELL ME WHAT CANNOT BE DONE.

I DID NOT ACQUIRE FOR $5000 STUDENT LOAN.

I'M WAITING ON PRESIDENT BIDEN TO SIGN SIGN THAT THING.

COME ON MAN I NEED 50 K RIGHT NOW.

MR. FOX IS TO COME UP WITH 50 K.

[LAUGHTER] MR. FOX PUT HIS HEAD DOWN.

BUT RESILIENCE BECAME REAL FOR ME.

SO, WHAT WE KNOW THAT RESILIENCE IS THAT BOUNCE BACK AND SPIRIT.

SO, YOU GOTTA HAVE BOUNCE BACK IN YOUR SPIRIT AND FROM THE FIVE KEY RESILIENCE SKILLS ARE SELF-AWARENESS, ATTENTION, LETTING GO, LETTING GO AGAIN.

AND PROCESSING AND SUSTAINING POSITIVE EMOTION.

SO THAT SELF-AWARENESS HAS TO DO WITH THAT EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE COULD REALLY TALK ABOUT THAT NOWADAYS.

IT'S A REAL THING.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE.

THEY SAY NOWADAYS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN INTELLECTUAL INTELLIGENCE.

BECAUSE IT CAN BE SMART AS ALL GET CRITICALLY I WAS NERDY.

DO I KNOW HOW TO GET TO TALK TO PEOPLE? DO I KNOW HOW TO EXPRESS MY FEELINGS? IT'S IMPORTANT.

MORE IMPORTANT IN TERMS OF HAVING HIS PEOPLE SKILLS.

ATTENTION THAT YOU HAVE TO DESTRESS BY MINDFULNESS IN THE SPECIAL REFUTABLE OF MINDFULNESS EXERCISES TODAY.

THE LETTING GO PHYSICALLY WHERE WE HAVE TO DO WITH MUSCLE RELAXATION AS I SAID.

STRESS AND ANXIETY CANNOT COEXIST WITH CALMNESS.

IT JUST DOESN'T WORK.

AND LETTING GO MENTALLY, YOU HAVE TO HAVE CLEAR THINKING.

AND THEN ACCESSING AND SUSTAINING POSITIVE EMOTION PUT MY LITTLE JOE, I'VE GOT JOKES.

WHAT TYPE.

MY JOB AND BLOOD TYPE JOKE IS THAT YOU HAVE TO BE POSITIVE.

AND NOT GO NEGATIVE.

[LAUGHTER] YOU GET IT? WE TOUCH THE LIVES OF MANY STUDENTS THAT PROVIDE OVER 10,000+ STUDENTS COUNSELING SESSIONS.

MR. NATE EVANS JUNIOR.

PERFECT.

FIRST AND FOREMOST, CAN WE GIVE DOCTOR PAMELA FOX ANOTHER ROUND OF APPLAUSE? OKAY, I WILL TAKE THAT.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

HOW'S EVERYBODY FEELING? IT'S EARLY, CHARLIE, CHARLIE.

WE'RE GOING TO WAKE UP.

ALL OF YOU.

WE'RE GONNA HAVE A GOOD TIME.

THIS IS GONNA BE A HEAVY HEAVY CONVERSATION.

I'M JOKING.

IT'S LIKE TO BE THAT HEAVY.

BUT, WE ARE GONNA TALK TESTED SOME EXCITED AND HONORED TO BE HERE IN DALLAS TEXAS.

TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TALK TO ALL OF YOU.

WHAT I'M NOT GONNA DO IS THIS.

IS TRY TO DUMP A LOT OF INFORMATION ON YOU.

BECAUSE I BELIEVE THAT YOU ALREADY HAVE THE INFORMATION.

A LOT OF TIMES WE DON'T APPLY WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW.

SAY AMEN.

AMEN.

>> SO, WHAT I WANT TO DO IS SHOW LITTLE BIT ABOUT MYSELF AND WHERE TO TAKE A LITTLE BREAK AND COME BACK AND I'M GONNA SHARE A LITTLE BIT MORE ON WHAT I DO WITH

[00:55:01]

STUDENTS AND OUR WORK WITH COUNSELORS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

DOES THAT SOUND GOOD? SOUNDS GOOD BUT SOUNDS GOOD.

DRIVING IN ACTUALLY JUST AS WE WENT PAST A DISTANCE I DID NOT KNOW YOU GUYS HAD A SIX LIVES OUT HERE.

I DID NOT YET A SIX FLAGS TRIP WE WANT NEW JERSEY.

I BELIEVE IT'S IN JACKSON.

BUT WE HAVE A SIX FLAGS AND AS WE WERE DRIVING BY, I THINK OF MY YOUNGER €" €" WILDWOOD.

I DO NOT HAVE ANY OF YOU €" €" SOMEBODY'S BEEN TO WILDWOOD.

MY GOOD? OKAY, GOOD.

SO, I'M DOWN IN THE ATLANTIC CITY AREA.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WILL LIKE TO THE AMUSEMENT PARK.

HOW MANY OF YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH THIS DISH THERE WERE TWO REDS JUST AS ONE WRITER WAS ACTUALLY REALLY CRAZY.

ONE RIGHT WHERE YOU WOULD JUMP AND STICK TO THE WALLS.

YOU NEVER THAT? IT'S A BAD IDEA.

WHY IS THAT RIGHT? YOU KNOW SOMETHING? WHY IS THAT A RIDE? YOU WOULD JUMP AND WHEN YOU GO INSIDE, THEY WOULD SAY HEY LOOK, DON'T FLIP UPSIDE DOWN.

FIRST THING WE DID WAS FLIP UPSIDE DOWN.

IT IS CRAZY.

I DON'T KNOW IF THAT RIGHT STILL EXISTS.

IT WAS TERRIBLE.

BUT, THERE WAS ALSO €" I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY OF YOU REMEMBER THE GLASS HOUSES.

REMEMBER THE GLASSHOUSE? IF THE WALK AND FIND A WAY OUT OF THAT.

I WAS WATCHING A VIDEO ONCE ON YOUTUBE AND THERE WAS A AND HE WAS IN THERE WITH HIS SON.

HIS SON AT ABILIFY RESULT IN HIS CALLING HIS SON.

MARK HENRY, I'M OVER HERE.

HIS SON RUNS FULL SPEED AND SMACKS THE GLASS.

[LAUGHTER] IT WAS HILARIOUS.

AS I THINK ABOUT THAT.

[LAUGHTER] IS MESSED UP.

SOMETHING I PROBABLY DID WHEN I CHILDREN.

BUT, AS I THINK ABOUT THAT, THE GLASSHOUSE, RIGHT? I THINK ABOUT MY LIFE.

AND I WANT TO BREAK THIS DOWN TO YOU.

WHEN YOU ARE IN THE GLASSHOUSE AND WELL, IT'S A MIRROR HOUSE.

NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT.

WHEN YOU'RE IN THAT MIRROR HOUSE BY YOURSELF €" €" EVERYWHERE YOU TURN IS YOU.

EVERYWHERE YOU TURN.

AND FOR ME, FOR SO LONG IN MY LIFE €" €" I WANTED TO SEE DIFFERENT IMAGE.

BUT IT JUST KEPT REFLECTING WHO I WAS IN THAT MOMENT.

MY STORY WAS ONE OF RUNNING.

THAT WAS MY POSTURE.

I GREW UP IN THE SOUTH ATLANTIC THIS IS ATLANTIC COUNTY AREA.

A BOUNCE DOWN OF TWO COMMITTEES.

ONE IN ATLANTIC CITY AND ONE CALLED PLEASANTVILLE PADILLA TOOK MY MOM, MY DAD, MY AUNTS, MY UNCLE, GRANDPA, MY AMP, MY UNCLE PETER BOUNCED AROUND FROM HOME TO HOME.

FIRST GRADE TO HIGH SCHOOL, WITH THE NINE DIFFERENT SCHOOLS.

SO, IS VERY CHALLENGING TO REALLY MAKE FRIENDS.

BECAUSE BENSON RAN EVERY SINGLE YEAR TO A NEW PLACE.

A NEW PLACE.

A NEW PLACE AND THEN WITHIN THAT, WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, A LOT OF TRAUMATIC THINGS HAPPENED AND SO I'M SURE MANY THINGS HAPPEN TO YOU.

NOT HERE TO ASK FOR A SYMPATHY.

BUT I HOPE THAT YOU GAIN A BETTER UNDERSTANDING AND THEN YOU ALSO HEIGHTENED YOUR EMPATHY FOR OTHERS PER THAT IS SOMETHING IF YOU LIKE WE LOST.

WE HAVE SO MUCH INFORMATION, RIGHT? INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN ALL THESE DIFFERENT THINGS.

YOU CAN GET SO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS WELL BUT A LOT OF US, WE HAVE TURNED OFF OUR EMPATHY BUTTON.

AND MY CHALLENGE IS AND MY HOPE FOR THE HIGHER SYMPOSIUM IS THAT BY THE END OF IT, YOU WILL TURN ON AND YOU WILL APPLY WHAT YO KNOW.

RIGHT? I WAS YOUNGER, WAS INTRODUCED PROVIDED FOR YOUNG, JOKES, SEXUALLY MOLESTED AS A YOUNG MALE.

WHICH IS INTERESTING BECAUSE FOR YOUNG MALCOLM YOU THINK THAT IT'S THE COOL THING WHEN THE OLD WOMAN COMES INTO THIS THESE THINGS TO YOU.

BUT THE REALITY IS IT'S VERY, VERY UNCOMFORTABLE AND TRAUMATIZING.

SO, THESE ARE THINGS THAT I DEALT WITH THE CHILD.

MY SCAPEGOAT ON WHAT YOURS WAS, BUT MINE WITH BASKETBALL.

I PUT EVERYTHING I HAD INTO THE GAME OF BASKETBALL WHENEVER I FELT ANXIOUS, WHEN DEPRESSED.

I'M GONNA GO PLAY BASKETBALL.

AND ENDED UP GETTING REALLY REALLY GOOD AT BEST.

TO BE HONEST, IT BECAME ONE OF MY LOVES.

IT WAS JUST A SCAPEGOAT.

IT WAS AN OUTLET AND AT SOME POINT, IT HAS TO END.

THEY HAD TO ADDRESS THESE ISSUES BE THERE IN A SAFE SPACE.

I'M GONNA TALK ABOUT THIS DURING THE SECOND HALF OF THE PRESENTATION.

SAFE SPACE CREATION, BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT I SPECIALIZE IN.

CREATING SAFE SPACES FOR STUDENTS, FOR YOU, INDIVIDUALS THAT JUST TALK AND OPEN UP.

BECAUSE THE REALITY IS THAT EVERYBODY'S NOT GONNA GO TO THERAPY.

EVEN IF IT WAS ACCESSIBLE.

THAT'S THE REALITY.

WE CAN ALL CREATE SAFE SPACES IN OUR HOMES AND SCHOOLS.

WITHIN OUR WORKPLACES.

VERY SIMPLE AND I'M GONNA BREAK IT DOWN TO YOU.

FOR ME, I DIDN'T HAVE A SAFE SPACE.

MY PARENTS WERE NOT TALKING ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH.

TO BE HONEST, IT WAS SO STIGMATIZED.

BILL OF THAT ONE FAMILY MEMBER.

FOR ME, IS MY UNCLE.

IT WAS ONE OF MY UNCLES AND HE WAS THE CRAZY UNCLE, RIGHT? AND THEY CALLED HIM THE CRAZY UNCLE.

[01:00:01]

LOOKING BACK NOW, YOU REALIZE THAT HE ACTUALLY HAD REAL ISSUES.

THAT WE ALL IGNORED BECAUSE NOBODY WANTED TO ADDRESS WHAT WAS GOING ON.

EVERYBODY WAS SILENT.

HAPPENED IN HIS HOUSE STAYS IN HIS HOUSE.

BILL FINISHED BEFORE I EVEN SAID.

THE OWNER WHEN I TALK ABOUT.

HAPPENS IN THIS HOUSE STAYS IN THIS HOUSE.

AND THAT PUT US IN A POSITION TO SUFFER IN SILENCE FOR YEARS.

SO, SO TO REALIZE THESE THINGS AS I GOT OLDER OBVIOUSLY.

FAST-FORWARD SS ARE REMEMBER WAS MY EIGHTH GRADE GRADUATION.

AND GRADUATION IS A CELEBRATION.

A BIG CELEBRATION.

YOU AND YOUR FAMILY FROM GRADUATING AND GOING TO HIGH SCHOOL.

AND MY DAD PULLED ME TO THE SIDE AT THE GRADUATION.

NOW MY HEAD THAT SAYS SOMETHING KATE HE GOT ME SOME AIR FORCE ONES.

I'M HYPED.

I'M HYPED.

HE GOT ME THIS.

I'M SO HYPED.

HE PULLED ME TO THE SIDE AND HE SAYS LOOK, I WANT TO TAKE SOMETHING.

I'M LIKE OKAY.

I'M ANXIOUS AND READY TO HEAR.

HE SAYS SO, THIS IS WHAT'S GONNA HAPPEN MOVING FORWARD.

HE SAYS WHEN YOU GET HIGH SCHOOL, SOME YOUR FRIENDS ARE GONNA DROP OUT.

SOME OF THE GIRLS GOING TO GET PREGNANT.

SOME YOUR FRIENDS ARE GOING TO PRISON.

SOME OF YOUR FRIENDS ARE GONNA DIE.

IT WAS SO HEAVY AND I'M LOOKING LIKE WAIT A MINUTE.

THIS IS MY GRADUATION.

THAT WAS REAL HEAVY BROW.

FOR WHATEVER REASON.

BUT THAT WAS ACTUALLY THE REALITY OF WHAT WAS HAPPENING AROUND ME.

WHAT HE THOUGHT HE WAS DOING WAS PREPARING ME FOR WHAT WOULD INEVITABLY COME.

BUT, HE PROVIDED ME NEW RESOURCES TO BE EMOTIONALLY FLUENT WHATSOEVER.

BECAUSE HE DID NOT HAVE THE RESOURCES.

HE TAUGHT ME WHAT HE KNEW.

THE DAY AFTER MY EIGHTH GRADE GRADUATION TEST IS VERY CLOSE FRIEND OF MINE NAMED JAMAAL SMITH WAS SHOT IN THE HEAD.

THE DAY AFTER EIGHTH GRADE GRADUATION.

HE ENDED UP SURVIVE THE HEAD,.

A YEAR LATER, WE WERE IN HIGH SCHOOL.

HE DIED IN THE STREETS IN HIS HOME.

THIS HAPPENED QUICK.

THE NEXT THING I LOST ANOTHER FRIEND NAMED JOHN.

MIKE.

ONE OF MY CLOSE FRIENDS MIKE, HE'S IN PRISON STUFF THAT I TALKED TO HIM NOW.

HE CHANGED HIS LIFE AROUND, BUT HE WAS IMPRISONED FOR GUN CHARGE.

A LOT OF THE GIRLS STARTED TO GET PREGNANT.

THIS IS HUGE.

THIS IS HUGE BECAUSE WHILE I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, THEY ACTUALLY DEVELOPED A TEEN CENTER FOR YOUNG GIRLS WHO ARE PREGNANT.

IT WAS SO NORMALIZED.

ALL THE TRAUMA AND ISSUES.

IT WAS SO NORMALIZED THAT WE STARTED TO CONFORM WITH THE INCENTIVE FIGHT AGAINST IT.

AND I REMEMBER GOING TO HIGH SCHOOL.

DOING MY THING AND PLAYING BASKETBALL AND DOING WELL MY GRADES ARE GOOD.

I'M SO STUPID.

ON THE OTHER SIDE, I'M STILL ANXIOUS AND YOUNG BREAKING DOWN.

CALM COOL AND COLLECTED.

I WAS THE LAID-BACK GUY.

LAID-BACK AND PLAYED BALL IN THE BACK AND DID MY THING.

SENIOR YEAR, CALLED THE MORNING ON COLLEGE IN MEMPHIS TENNESSEE.

DIVISION II COLLEGE.

THEY GIVE ME A FULL RIDE SCHOLARSHIP.

I WANT TOM KING THAT YEAR.

I WANT THE SCHOOL TALENT SHOW.

LIKE SENIOR YEAR.

SENIOR YEAR WAS I WAS POP IN.

I WAS THAT GUY.

THEY WERE LITERALLY CALLING ME 08.

I WAS LIKE WHEN NOBODY REALIZED WAS THE MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL STRUGGLE I WAS STILL GOING THROUGH.

WHEN I WAS GROWING UP, MY AUNT LIZ €" €" SHE HAD A HEART ATTACK USING THE BATHROOM.

SHE HAD THREE OR FOUR CHILDREN.

THREE OF THEM CAME AND MOVED IN WITH US.

SO, IF YOU THINK THREE CHILDREN THAT ARE MY COUSINS.

TO RECRUIT MY BROTHERS FROM MY NANNIES MOVED IN WITH US NOW AND ALSO MY MOM'S DAD MOVED IN WITH US.

THIS IS A FOUR BEDROOM HOME.

WITH ALL WAS IN THIS PLACE.

AND NOBODY WORKING BUT MY MOM.

AND I REMEMBER HER COMING TO ME JUST AS SHE PULLED ME AND MY BROTHER MY OLDER BROTHER, MY YOUNGER BROTHER IS 28.

PULLED US IN AND SHE SAID WE HAVE TO START PACKING OUR STUFF UP TO GET OUT OF HERE.

WE TALKED ABOUT? WE HAVE TO GO SOON.

AND WHAT SHE WAS TELLING ME WAS THAT WE WERE BEING EVICTED.

WITH ALL THESE PEOPLE IN THE PLACE TO GO.

IT WAS JUST INSANE.

IT'S TRAUMA ON TRAUMA AND TRAUMA ON TRAUMA.

BACK TO EIGHTH GRADE GRADUATION.

JUSTICE GOING TO COLLEGE WAS A HUGE DEAL.

GOING TO COLLEGE.

DON'T JUDGE ME.

BOOM AND GOING TO COLLEGE FOR AN ONGOING DRIVE HIM DOWN THERE.

THAT HE WAS SO SET ON DRUG MIDDLE SCHOOL PARTIES GONNA TAKE ME FROM NEW JERSEY ALL THE WAY TO MEMPHIS TENNESSEE.

LET ME SAY IT AGAIN.

BECAUSE NEW JERSEY TO MEMPHIS TENNESSEE.

[01:05:04]

IN ASTRO VAN.

HE WAS SO SET ON A PRETTY WAS SO SET.

WE HAD IT ALL PLANNED OUT.

THE WHOLE ENTIRE PLANE TRIPPED OUT.

IT WAS THE SUMMER LEADING UP TO ME GOING TO SCHOOL BRUNO'S WORKING ON IT LIFTING WEIGHTS AND GETTING READY FOR THE SEASON.

AS PLANE BASKETBALL AND AT THE TIME, I WAS STAYING AT HIS HOUSE FOR THE SUMMER.

I WAS COMING HOME AND HE WAS SITTING ON THE HOUSE HOLDING HIS STOMACH LIKE HE WAS IN A LOT OF PAIN.

FOR ME, MY POP-UP WAS LIKE SUPERMAN TO ME.

THAT'S HOW I VIEWED HIM.

HE ALWAYS HAD LIKE A BUTTON UP SHIRT LIKE THIS ON.

HIS KHAKI CREASED PANTS.

HIS CHOCOLATE ISSUES.

HE HAD HIS HAT ON AND WAS ALWAYS DOING SOMETHING WITH HIS HANDS.

USING THE BREAKING DISCUSSION WOULD BREAK STUFF JUST TO FIX IT, HE WAS ON THE LAWN.

HOUSTON TOO MUCH STUFF HE WAS ALWAYS ACTIVE.

LITERALLY.

THAT'S HOW I SEEN HIM.

USING HIS HANDS ALL THE TIME TO PROVIDE, PROVIDE, PROVIDE WHERE HE WAS ALWAYS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD FIXING SOMETHING FOR SOME MEALS.

I SEE HIM IN PAIN AND I'VE NEVER SEEN HIM LIKE THIS.

MCMAHON, THIS IS TO ASK MY BROTHER JOSH BUT HOW LONG HAS POP-UP BEEN SITTING HERE LIKE THIS? HE SAYS HE'S BEEN LIKE THIS ALL DAY SINCE THE MORNING.

WHEN HE LEFT, HE'S BEEN LIKE THIS ON THE COUCH ALL DAY.

ONLY REALLY? THAT'S WEIRD.

I WILL BLOW OVER THE POP-UP, YOU OKAY? I'M ALL RIGHT.

DISTILLED SCHOOL.

HE FROM ALABAMA PRETTY DON'T TALK MUCH.

UNLIKE JOSH, THIS DOES NOT LOOK GOOD.

I THINK WE NEED TO TAKE HIM TO THE HOSPITAL.

YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MEN, IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT BLACK MEN FROM THE SOUTH €" €" THEY'RE NOT TRYING TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL.

I WOULD RATHER DIE WITH SOME DIGNITY ON MY COUCH.

THEN GO TO THE HOSPITAL.

BUT I WAS NOT LETTING IT GO DOWN LIKE THAT.

SO, I LITERALLY WENT OVER TO MY BROTHER AND PULLED INTO THE CORNER NEXT TO JOSH, HE DOESN'T WANT TO GO.

BUT, WE CANNOT REALLY GIVE HIM A CHOICE BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE GONNA DO.

IT WAS HIM.

[INDISCERNIBLE] SO, I SAID THIS IS WHAT WE'RE GONNA DO.

I PLAY BEST WELL.

I STARTED LIFTING WEIGHTS BUT GETTING READY FOR SCHOOL.

GETTING LITTLE STRONGER.

PUTTING LITTLE MUSCLE ON PIGMENT BROTHER PLAYED FOR POWERHOUSE FOOTBALL SCHOOL IN NEW JERSEY.

I SAID THIS IS WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DO.

WE ARE GOING TO GRAB HIM.

WE'RE NOT EVEN MET TO DO THIS.

WE'RE GONNA GRAB HIM.

WE CANNOT BE BOTH OF US BUT WE'RE GONNA GRAB HIM.

WE'RE GONNA THROW THEM IN THE VAN.

AND WE'RE GOING TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL COULD BE LITERALLY €" €" THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED.

WHEN IN [LAUGHTER] AND I JUST GOT MY LICENSE.

18 THOSE OLD DEMOLITIONS.

I GRABBED HIS STUFF AND INSURANCE CARPET TO PUT IN MY POCKET.

SET ART, ON THREE.

[LAUGHTER] ONE, TWO, HOLD ON, SHOULD WE DO THIS? HOLD ON WE ARE GOING TO DO THIS.

ALL RIGHT.

KEEP YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME.

ALL RIGHT.

ONE, TWO JUST AS WE LITERALLY GRABBED HIM.

HE DIDN'T REALLY FIGHT WITH US BUT HE DIDN'T FIGHT WITH US AT ALL.

WE GOT THEM, PUT THEM IN THE VAN.

STRAP THEM IN.

HE DIDN'T SAY MUCH OF NOTHING COULD JUMP IN AND I LITERALLY RAN FOR LIKE THREE RED LIGHTS.

FLYING BECAUSE HE LOOKED LIKE HE WAS IN AGONIZING PAIN TO DIVERSITY THAT WAS SOMEBODY'S AROUND YOU AND THEY ARE IN PAIN.

AND YOU CAN FEEL THE PAIN? IT'S LIKE SOMETHING JUST ON WHAT TO DO.

I STARTED TO FORGET BIT OF DRIVING THROUGH THINGS.

AND WE GET TO THE HOSPITAL PRODUCTION OF MAKING PHONE CALLS.

I CALLED MY DAD, MY MOM, MY AUNTS.

WE ARE AT THE HOSPITAL.

WE ARE AT POP-UP.

WE'RE NOT SURE WHAT'S WRONG.

COME QUICK.

THE FAMILY STARTS ROLLING IN.

FAMILIES ARE FALLING IN.

EVERYBODY GETS THERE AND SETTLED IN AND TALKING.

FIGURING IT UP WITH THE DOCTOR COMES FROM THE BACK AND SAYS IS THIS THE EVANS FAMILY? OKAY, THIS IS ASKING WHAT'S GOING ON DOC.

OKAY, WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS AND WHAT CAN YOU GIVE HIM? HIS ANTIBIOTICS.

WHAT CAN WE DO? HE SAYS MR. EVANS HAS GANGRENE.

IT'S INTERESTING BECAUSE WHEN I TELL THIS STORY IN FRONT OF A BUNCH OF HIGH SCHOOLS, THE LACK OKAY.

BUT YOU KNOW LITTLE MORE THAN SOME HIGH SCHOOLS.

SO COOL.

COOL.

ME BEING NAïVE IS A HIGH SCHOOL AND MYSELF JUST BEING GRADUATED.

I SAID OKAY.

WE TALK ABOUT? ARE YOU GIVEN UP SOMETHING SO WE CAN TAKE THEM HOME LATER? IS HE GONNA BE HERE FOR A FEW DAYS? WERE WE DOING? RIGHT? HE JUST HAD A STROKE A FEW YEARS PRIOR.

WHAT WE DO AND HOW CAN WE GET HIM OUT OF HERE AND GET HIM BACK ON HIS FEET? POP-UP WITH UP TO BE IN THE YARD HAD WE GET BACK IN THE YARD? SAID NO, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND PREVIOUS GANGRENE INFECTION AND WHAT'S HAPPENING IS THAT IT'S EATING AT HIS INTESTINES.

THIS IS WHY HE WAS HOLDING HIS STOMACH THE ENTIRE TIME.

IT WAS LITERALLY EATING AWAY AT HIS INTESTINES.

AND HE SAID MR. EVANS WILL NOT MAKE IT TO TOMORROW MORNING.

SO GO SAY YOUR GOODBYES.

AND I REMEMBER IT LIKE MY HEART DROPPED IN THAT MOMENT.

EXCUSE ME? YOU HAVE TO THINK €" €" A GROUP AROUND SO MUCH CHAOS AND TRAUMA AND I WAS BOTTLED IN.

MY ENTIRE LIFE.

RIGHT? DID WAS RIGHT BOTTLE.

LEVINSON YOU SHAKE A SPRAY BOTTLE UP? AND YOU START TO CRACK THAT PUPPY OPEN? WHAT'S CAN HAPPEN? THAT WAS LITERALLY HARASSED OF THE FILM INSIDE PEDOPHILIC SOMEBODY WAS

[01:10:03]

STARTING TO TWIST TOP.

MY ENTIRE LIFE SOME NEW TAKEN AGGRESSIVELY LIKE THIS.

AND I FELT LIKE SOMEBODY STARTED TO TWIST THE TOP.

IN THE REMEMBER GOING TO THE BACK ROOM SEEN HIM ALL ISINGLASS YELLOW TUBES ALL IN HIS MOUTH AND LOOK ON HIS FACE OCCASIONALLY.

AND IT HIT ME SO HARD.

AND I DIDN'T HAVE THE COPING STRATEGIES.

I DIDN'T HAVE ANY LEVEL OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE OR FLUENCY.

ANYTHING.

AND I REMEMBER MOST SNAPPING IN THAT MOMENT FOR NOT SNAPPING IN THE SENSE OF GOING OFF, BUT IT WAS SOMETHING THAT SNAPPED IN M MIND AND SOMEBODY BROKE A STROLL.

RIGHT? SUMMARY BREAK A TOOTHPICK OR SOMETHING.

AND I BLACKED OUT.

AND I REMEMBER THAT I WENT BACK TO SCHOOL.

TWO WEEKS LATER, I WENT TO SCHOOL IN MEMPHIS TENNESSEE IS THE FIRST FLIGHT EVER TAKEN BY MYSELF.

I FLEW DOWN THERE AND MET THE COACH.

FIRST NIGHT ON CAMPUS €" €" THEY RAN ME WITH THE SENIOR, WHICH IS CRAZY FIRST OF ALL.

AND ON A HOOK IN FRONT OF THE SENIOR.

BUT I HAD A SENIOR, MY FIRST NIGHT, NIGHT OUT ON THE TOWN, AND HE DID NOT DRINK, PARTY, SMOKE, WHATEVER IT IS.

YOU NEED TO GO GET MY MIND OFF OF WHAT'S GOING ON.

THE BECAME A CYCLE.

VERY JUST TRAUMATIC CYCLE.

SO MUCH SO THAT THREE MONTHS AND, I WAS READY TO LEAVE SCHOOL AND COME BACK HOME.

I HAD A FULBRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP AT THE BASKETBALL SCHOLARSHIP.

I DIDN'T HAVE TO PAY FOR ROOM AND BOARD.

ANYTHING.

[INDISCERNIBLE] AND HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING.

HE SAID THE PLAY BALL AND DO WELL AT SCHOOL.

[INDISCERNIBLE] I BE SUPER DEPRESSED ON THE WEEKENDS AND IT WAS EATING ME A LOT.

I CANNOT STAND IT.

I FORFEITED THE ENTIRE SCHOLARSHIP TO THE HEAD.

THEY GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL.

THEY DEFINITELY CANNOT AFFORD TO SEND ME OFF TO COLLEGE.

IT CAME BACK HOME, I WORKED A LITTLE BIT.

SINCE IN MY TO MY MOM AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

IN THE GUN WHO BEST BALL TOURNAMENT NEW JERSEY CALLED THE EK GET A FEW DIFFERENT COLLEGE LOOKS.

GOOD OTHER FULBRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP.

€" €" [INDISCERNIBLE] NEW MEXICO AND NEW MEXICO MILITARY INSTITUTE.

IT WAS A DIVISION I JUNIOR COLLEGE.

SO, MY PLAN IS TO CLICK BASKETBALL FOR YEAR AND THEN TRANSFER TO MARQUETTE OR SOMEWHERE THAT WAS DIVISION I FOR THAT WAS THE PLAN.

GOT THERE.

I WAS THERE FOR ABOUT A YEAR.

ALMOST A YEAR.

THE SAME THING HAPPENED.

SOMETHING WAS HAPPENING IN MEMPHIS.

HE FOLLOWED ME PUBLIC TO NEW MEXICO.

I DID PUT TWO AND TWO TOGETHER.

I DIDN'T PUT TWO AND TWO TOGETHER EVERYWHERE YOU GO, THOUGH YOU ARE PRETTY DIDN'T MAKE SENSE TO PROVIDE TO LEARN THE HARD WAY.

THIS IS A LONG PROCESS FOR ME.

AFTER THAT.

AND I ENDED UP JUST AS THIS TIME TAKING CLASSES IN NEW JERSEY AND THE SCHOOL IN NORTH JERSEY CALLED CALDWELL UNIVERSITY.

CALDWELL COLLEGE.

GOT IN CONTACT WITH THEM.

, FOR THE TEAM AND WILL GET YOU ON.

COOL.

AGAIN, MUSING THE SCAPEGOAT I WAS HAD, WHICH IS BASKETBALL.

I'M NEVER ADDRESSING THE ACTUAL REAL ISSUES AND THINGS HAVE GONE ON WITH ME.

I'M THERE FOR ABOUT A YEAR AND 1/2, MANY COACH ANNOUNCING IDA I.

I LEAVE AGAIN.

THREE SCHOOLS THEM.

BOUNCE AROUND FROM SCHOOL TO SCHOOL SCHOOL.

TRYING TO OUTRUN THE ANXIETY, STRESS, THE WORRIES.

NOT REALIZING THAT I CAN JUST STOP AND ADDRESS THEM.

NOBODY PULLED ME TO THE SEPARATELY AND HAVE THE SYMPOSIUM BUT WE DIDN'T HAVE ME OR YOU.

SIT ME DOWN AND HAVE THESE CONVERSATIONS.

I CONSTANTLY RAN AND I DID NOT HAVE THE RESOURCES THAT WERE AVAILABLE.

ENDED UP BACK HOME AND I REMEMBER THIS TIME I WAS HOME.

ONE OF MY CLOSEST FRIENDS, HIS NAME IS CLEMENTS FRIENDS EXES.

BASKETBALL TOGETHER.

AUNT CAME HOME TO SOME VERY DRAMATIC NEWS THAT HE HAD JUST COMMITTED SUICIDE.

YES.

AND I REMEMBER IT WAS HITTING ME SO HARD DURING THAT TIME.

AND THAT'S WHEN I GOT A VERY, VERY DARK SPOT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE.

VERY DARK SPOT.

REMEMBER BEING IN MY BEDROOM LITERALLY THINKING THAT IT WOULD BE BETTER IF I WAS NOT HERE.

LIKE NONE OF THIS IS MAKING SENSE GOD.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND.

AND I REMEMBER LITERALLY GETTING BACK IN THAT DARK SPOT AND THERE WERE A FEW THINGS THAT SAVED ME.

ONE WAS ACTUALLY WRITING.

HOW MANY OF YOU JOURNAL? JOURNALING WAS HUGE FOR ME.

ACTUALLY STARTED TO WRITE A LITTLE BIT AND GET SOME THINGS OUT.

THE SECOND ONE WAS A CLOSE FRIEND.

HOW MANY OF YOU I ASKED STUDENTS THIS ALL THE TIME.

HIM HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE A BEST FRIEND? OR CLOSE FRIEND? SOMETIMES BEST FRIENDS.

FRIENDS AT ALL? ALL RIGHT.

COOL, COOL.

IF NOT, USUALLY WITH SOME FRIENDS.

SO, SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS.

THE AIR FORCE TONY CHAPMAN.

HE LIVES IN FLORIDA PRETTY USE MY WEDDING LAST YEAR.

HE ACTUALLY CAME TO MY HOUSE.

[01:15:01]

THIS THE POWER OF HAVING PEOPLE AND RELATIONSHIPS.

PEOPLE THAT YOU CLOSE WITH.

THIS IS THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING CLOSE WITH STUDENTS AND THE WAY WE UNDERSTAND THEM AND HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM.

WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE THEM ON A PEDESTAL.

HE CAME INTO MY HOUSE AND HE IS SEEING SOMETHING OFF WITH ME.

HE WOULDN'T LET IT REST.

GOING ON.

ON FUN.

I'M GOOD.

I'M GOOD.

YOU NOT GOOD.

LET'S GET OUT OF THE HOUSE COULD YOU COME WITH ME TO THE GYM.

I'M NOT GOING TO THE GYM TONY.

TONY WAS KIND OF SWELL.

TONY HAD BEEN LIFTING WEIGHTS FOR A LONG TIME.

SO, THE TONE IS JUST AS ACTORS SHOW YOU A PICTURE.

WE'RE GOING TO THE GYM.

UNLIKE BROKEN MAMA COME TO THE GYM.

HE SAID WERE GOING TO THE GYM.

I WANTED PROBLEMS. HE SAID IT TWICE AND YOU GOT WERE BASING YOUR VOICE.

I'M NOT TRYING TO ROLL.

I'M NOT TRYING TO WRESTLE WITH YOU IN THIS HOUSE.

OF GOT ENOUGH ON MY PLATE.

THIS IS WHERE WE START THE TRANSITION FOR ME.

TAKE HIM TO THE GYM AND INTRODUCES ME TO TWO OTHER MEN WHO LOOKED JUST LIKE ME.

TWO OTHER MEN.

IN TALKING AIDES, TATTOOS, THESE BLACK MEN THAT LOOK LIKE ME.

AND WHAT WE WOULD DO BEFORE WE WORKED OUT €" €" JUST HOW WE ARE ALL HERE, WE WOULD SIT IN THE LOCKER ROOM FOR 30 MINUTES.

WE WERE SITTING IN THE LOCKER ROOM AND WE WOULD TALK.

NOW WE WERE NOT TALKING ABOUT WOMEN, WE'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT SEX, DRUGS, BARELY EVEN TALKED ABOUT SPORTS TO BE HONEST.

WE WERE IN THAT LOCKER ROOM HAVING VERY TRANSPARENT CONVERSATIONS ABOUT WHAT WE'RE GOING THROUGH AND HOW WE WERE GETTING THROUGH.

IRMA THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED.

ALSO GUILTY, THIS WAY.

WHAT'S GOING ON HERE? REMEMBER THAT HAPPENING AND IS AGLOW.

OVER TIME, I STARTED TO GET MORE COMFORTABLE AND I STARTED TO BE MORE TRANSPARENT AND VULNERABLE AND OPEN UP AS WELL.

THEY REALLY OPEN UP THAT DOOR FOR ME AND THAT WAS FOR SOME WORSHIP TO EXPERIENCE SOME LEVEL OF HEALING.

AND I SAID THERE IS SOMETHING TO THIS.

BUT I WAS AWFULLY END.

I WASN'T FULLY IN.

AND IT IS GETTING BACK IN THE SCHOOL AND GOING BACK DOWN TO ATLANTIC CAPE COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

AND TAKING SOME CLASSES IN GETTING MY ASSOCIATES DEGREE.

SAME TIMEOUT PLAN BASEBALL.

NOW, IF THE THINK ABOUT THIS.

SCHOOLS WANT TO RECRUIT A NUMBER THEY WANT TO BRING ME IN ON THEIR TEAM.

BUT, I'VE BEEN OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS.

I'VE GOT A CARD AND OUTPUT OF THAT CONSCIENCE.

GET A FEW OF THE BILLS.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE SCHOOL IS COVERING WITH THOSE.

I CAN'T PLAY BASEBALL FOR FREE ANYMORE.

I LITERALLY FORFEIT ALL OF MY ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY AND I GO OVER TO LAS VEGAS FOR OVERSEAS TRIAL.

I GO FOR WEEK, MY PLAN AGAIN IS TO PUT EVERYTHING INTO BASKETBALL.

AND NOT FULLY ADDRESS EVERYTHING THAT'S GOING ON.

I PLAYED AMAZING OR AT LEAST I THOUGHT WAS AMAZING AT THE COMBINE.

I GET HOME AND EXPECT SOME PHONE CALLS BUT I EXPECT SOME AGENTS TO REACH OUT.

THE DAYS GO BY AND NOTHING.

OKAY.

I JUST GOT HOME.

A FEW WEEKS GO BY.

NO CALL OR EMAIL.

ABOUT A MONTH GOES BY.

NO CALL, NO EMAIL.

SO NOW LITTLE INSECURE KID WHO LIVES INSIDE ME IS STARTING TO RISE UP AGAIN.

FEELING UNWORTHY, UNSEEN, UNHEARD I CONNECTED A CALL BACK FROM SCOUT.

OUTPUT MY ALL INTO THIS.

CONSTANTLY RUNNING, BUT NEVER ADDRESSING THE ISSUES.

ADDRESSING THE REAL ISSUES.

I GET AN EMAIL OUT OF NOWHERE.

THE AGENT FROM ENGLAND WAS TO BRING ME IN ON THE TEAM PRETTY SENDING OVER THE CONTRACT.

THIS IS MY SHOT.

THIS IS IT.

I'M SUPER EXCITED ABOUT THIS.

I GET THE CONTRACT, I'M HYPED.

I TOLD MY WIFE, WHO WAS MY GIRLFRIEND AT THE TIME HE TOOK WITH THIS CONTRACT, I'M GOING.

AND AM BLESSED TO HAVE FRIENDS WHO PLAYED PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL.

I SHOWED HIM THE CONTRACT IN MCKAY,, CAN YOU LOOK AT THIS AND MAKE SURE IT'S GOOD.

MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS COPACETIC AND THAT THE HOUSING IS GOOD.

THAT MY PAY IS GOOD.

ALL THESE DIFFERENT THINGS.

SO, IT'S CHECKING OUT VERY WELL.

THE AT THE LAST PAGE.

WHO'S CLOSE OF THE PUBLIC DECIDED THIS IN 2500 OVER AS A DEPOSIT FOR YOUR STATE.

THAT'S WEIRD.

HE RECRUITED ME.

WHY WOULD I PAY YOU ANYTHING? IF SOMEBODY WANTS TO COME IF YOU PLAY SPORTS, THEY WILL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET YOU THERE.

YOU NEVER SEND ANYTHING.

I WAS LIKE MAYBE IT'S A TYPO OR SOMETHING.

I'M JUST CURRENTLY.

REACH BACK OUT HEY LOOK, SOMETHING ON THE LAST PAGE, WHAT'S THAT ABOUT? I GET NO RESPONSE.

COME TO FIND OUT FROM THE AGENCY WHO DID THE OVERSEAS TRAP THE SUN REACTED TO THE SYSTEM.

I HAPPEN TO BE ONE OF THE PLAYERS ON THE LEFT BUT STANKO DID NOT SEND ANY MONEY COULD IMAGINE WHAT THIS DID TO ME EMOTIONALLY AND MENTALLY.

I GET SCANNED TOO? THIS IS CRAZY.

AGAIN, THE DEEP DEEP DEPRESSION.

EXPLAIN BEST BOTH THE LOCAL REC CENTER.

I WENT FOR A DUNK.

SOMEBODY UNDERCUT MY LEGS.

IF YOU EVER PLAYED SPORTS AND SIMPLY RELAX, CONTROL AND BE NASTY AND UGLY.

FOR ME, I ONLY TWIST MY ANKLE.

I TWISTED MY ANKLE.

YOU KNOW WHAT? THAT'S NOT THAT BAD.

I CAN GO TO REHAB THIS.

THIS IS FINE NOW.

I DON'T KNOW IF YOU CAN TELL OR SEE ME APPEAR.

ACTUALLY BOWLEGGED AND PIGEON TOED.

CANNOT REALLY TELL.

I HAVE ADJUSTED FOR 31 YEARS, I'VE ADJUSTED IT BECAUSE IT USED TO BE ON

[01:20:01]

SOME REAL TINY PICKLES LIKE THIS.

IT WAS BAD.

IT WAS BAD.

DO NOT LIE TO YOU.

IT WAS BAD.

OVER THE YEARS.

I HAVE TO THINK WHEN I WALK.

SO, I'M NOT IGNORING YOU.

I'M THINKING.

[LAUGHTER] [INDISCERNIBLE] I REALIZED THERE WAS ALSO NO FEELING MY FOOT.

AND LIKE ANY NORMAL HUMAN, I STARTED TO FREAK OUT.

I'M RUNNING WITH THE PEN ON THE BOTTOM MY FOOT LIKE NO FEELING IN MY FOOT.

WHAT'S GOING ON? SO, WE ENDED UP GOING TO THE ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON OR TO THE DOCTORS IN CHECKING IT OUT.

I FOUND OUT THAT I TORE A BUNCH OF LIGAMENTS IN MY ANKLE.

AND I HAD TO BE IN THE BOOT AND I CANNOT PLAY BASKETBALL.

SO, THE ONE THING THAT I USED HAS BEEN TAKEN AWAY.

AND IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT I ACTUALLY SAT THERE WITH THE THOUGHTS THAT I WAS HAVING.

I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY OF YOU DO THAT, I CHALLENGE YOU TO SIT AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT.

AND ASK WHY MY THINKING ABOUT THIS? I REMEMBER SEEING THE THOUGHTS LIKE MY MISSING THIS TO MYSELF? WHERE DID THAT COME FROM? HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? AND IN THE MOMENT, I DECIDED THAT I WANTED BETTER FOR MYSELF.

BECAUSE I GREW UP IN PAIN AND TRAUMA AND WORRY AND ANXIOUSNESS.

ALL THESE DIFFERENT THINGS.

I KNEW WHAT THAT SIDE FELT LIKE AND I MADE A DECISION IN THAT MOMENT WITH THAT BOOT ON THAT I WANTED TO SEE WHAT THE OTHER SIDE FELT LIKE.

NOW, I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S OVER THERE.

I'M KIND OF SCARED OF IT.

BUT LOOK, I KNOW WHAT THIS FEELS LIKE AND I DON'T LIKE IT.

SO, I STARTED TO GO ON ACTUAL HEALING JOURNEY.

I GOT BACK IN SCHOOL AND LOOK TO MY BACHELORS DEGREE AT THE UNIVERSITY.

AND I WAS DRIVING HOME ONE DAY.

I WAS DRIVEN HOME ONE DAY FROM SCHOOL AND MY PASTOR CAUGHT ME.

FOR NOW, PRIOR TO THIS, I SAID I WANTED TO MAKE HIS WHOLE LIFE CHANGE.

TWO THINGS BUT I WANT TO START GOING TO THERAPY AND GET BAPTIZED.

THOSE ARE THE TWO THINGS BUT I WANTED TO DO THOSE THINGS BEEN A MINUTE COMMIT TO THIS STUFF.

WE GET EMOTIONAL AND WANT TO COMMIT THE STUFF AND THEN WE DON'T DO IT.

[LAUGHTER] THAT WAS ME.

OF MIKE ON DOING THIS AND CHANGE MY LIFE.

THIS IS THE MOMENT.

AND HE CAUGHT ME.

AND MANY CALLED HE SAID HEY, WHAT'S GOING ON PASTOR STEVE? WE HAVE BAPTISMS THIS SUNDAY AT 1030.

CAN YOU MAKE IT? WAS LIKE HE GOT REALLY QUIET ON THE OTHER END OF THE PHONE.

ALL I HEARD WAS HELLO.

HELLO? AND I WAS THINKING €" €" MAN.

IT'S AMAZING HOW WE KNOW THE RIGHT DECISIONS TO MAKE WHEN IT COMES TO HER MENTAL HEALTH AND PHYSICAL HEALTH.

OUR WELL-BEING, BUT WE DON'T MAKE THEM.

YOU KNOW THE DECISION.

YOU HAVE THE INFORMATION.

I WAS IN THAT CROSSROAD MOMENT.

ROY KNEW THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

I KNEW WHAT I HAD AND WANTED TO COMMIT TO.

I AM MOST DIDN'T DO IT.

AND I CAUGHT MYSELF.

THIS IS NOT THE RIGHT TIME FOR ME TO DO THIS.

AND I, MYSELF AND SAID THE FACT THAT YOU THINK THIS IS THE RIGHT TIME MEANS IT'S THE PERFECT TIME.

IT'S THE ABSOLUTE PERFECT TIME.

SO, I SAID I WOULD BE THERE.

I WENT THROUGH THAT, I WENT THROUGH WITH THAT AND THEN SHORTLY AFTER THAT, I STARTED LOOKING FOR THERAPISTS AND I FOUND A FE PUT THEM ON MY THIRD THERAPIST NOW.

LOOK.

KEEP GOING TO FIND ONE THAT FITS YOU.

I WOULD SAY THAT PRETTY SPECIALLY TO MY YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN.

KEEP GOING AND KEEP GOING.

IT WON'T BE THE FIRST ONE EVERY TIME.

SO, THAT'S WHAT I ENDED UP DOING.

THE POWER IN THIS AND THE MOMENT.

I WANT TO CLOSE HERE €" €" PART OF ME DOING THAT AND BEING A TRAILBLAZER PUT MARTY FIRST JEN HIGH SCHOOL GRAD AND FIRST JEN ENTREPRENEUR PUT ALL THESE DIFFERENT THINGS.

WHEN I STARTED TO CARE FOR MYSELF, SHOULD TAKE CARE OF MYSELF.

WHAT HAPPENED WAS THIS.

IT WAS HUGE AND CINCHING MY FAMILY FOREVER.

MY DAD STARTED GOING TO THERAPY.

MY MOM STARTED GOING TO THERAPY.

AND NOW MY YOUNGER BROTHER IS ALSO LOOKING FOR THERAPIST AS WELL.

SO NOT EVERYBODY €" €" SOMEBODY STEPPED UP.

I COULD EASILY NOT DONE THAT.

IT'S NOT THAT THEY NEED PERMISSION FOR ME TO DO.

THEY DON'T.

SOMETIMES PEOPLE NEED TO SEE SOMEBODY THAT THEY KNOW AND LOVE TAKE THE FIRST STEP TO TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES.

THAT'S WHY WE CAN TAKE ACTION.

WE CAN GIVE YOU ALL INFORMATION YOU WANT.

IT DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU DO NOT APPLY.

FOR ME, BEING THE TRAILBLAZER AND APPLY THE THINGS THAT I KNEW AND THE THINGS THAT I WANT TO GET DONE AND IMPROVE MY MENTAL HEALTH AND MY EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING €" €" IT ENCOURAGED ALL OF THEM AND NOW WE ARE ALL DOING THE SAME AS A FAMILY.

SO WE DO NOT CONTINUE TO CARRY THIS GENERATIONAL TRAUMA INTO THE NEXT GENERATION.

SO, SOMETHING I LOVE TO SAY IS THAT YOUR STORY IS ABOUT YOU.

BUT IT'S NOT FOR YOU.

IT'S FOR SOMEONE ELSE.

EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US PRESSES WE HAVE A STORY.

MAYBE IT'S NOT AS TRAUMATIZING AS THAT.

THAT'S NOT WHAT IT'S ABOUT.

BUT WE HAVE A STORY.

BE A BOOT PEOPLE THAT ARE WATCHING YOU.

YOU PEOPLE THAT ARE LOOKING UP TO.

WHETHER THEY SAY IT OR NOT.

YOU HAVE TO DO IS BEST FOR YOU.

LET'S CAN ENCOURAGE YOU TO DO WHAT'S BEST FOR THEM.

[01:25:01]

FOR ME, SHARE YOUR STORY.

RIGHT? SHARE YOUR STORY.

AND OFTEN, PARENTS SPEAK LIKE ME OR READ BOOKS.

BUT IT'S GONNA BE MAYBE A ONE-ON-ONE CONVERSATION.

ANYONE SHARE THE THINGS THAT YOU FILLED FROM.

YOU NEVER WANT A TRAUMA DUMP ON ANYBODY.

I WAS TELL PEOPLE, SHOW YOUR BONES, NOT YOUR SCARS.

I WANT TO SEE YOUR WOUNDS.

I WANT TO SEE THE COOL CUT.

TELL ME THE STORY ABOUT IT.

DON'T COME TO ME WITH AN OPEN WOUND BECAUSE THEN YOU CAN AFFECT US BOTH.

SO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF, SHARE YOUR STORY AND REALIZE THAT YOUR STORY IS ABOUT YOU.

BUT IT'S NOT FOR YOU.

MY STORY, EVERYTHING I TOLD Y'ALL IS ABOUT NATE EVANS JUNIOR.

IT IS NOT FOR NATE EVANS JUNIOR.

IT'S FOR SOMEBODY ELSE WHO NEEDS IT.

SO, ON A TRANSITION INTO THE MINDFUL MOMENT.

GIVE EVERYBODY FEW MOMENTS.

ABOUT 10 MINUTES.

ABOUT 10 MINUTES AND WE WILL MEET BACK HERE AND DIE BELOW BIT MORE INTO WHAT ACTUALLY DO.

WITH MY STUDENTS AND WORKING WITH COUNSELORS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

I CAN FOR BEING PRESENT.

THANKS FOR LISTENING AND THANKS FOR ENGAGING.

LET'S TAKE 10 MINUTES.

[MUSIC] [APPLAUSE]

>> WE'RE LIVE AT THE DALLAS COLLEGE ART EVERYBODY.

THE TENSION PLEASE.

CAN I BE ATTENTION PLEASE? IF YOU CAN, MAKE YOUR WAY BACK TO YOUR SEATS.

YOU ALL LOOK AMAZING BY THE WAY.

SO I CAN PUT THAT OUT THERE.

YES.

THAT'LL BE THE NEXT SLIDE PLEASE.

WE'RE GOOD TO GO.

I'M GONNA TRY NOT TO WALK IN FRONT OF YOU GUYS SO YOU CAN SEE IT.

EVERYBODY WAKING UP A LITTLE BIT NOW? GOOD, GOOD I LIKE THAT.

EARLY IN THE MORNING IS TOUGH.

I GET IT.

COFFEE HAS TO SET IN.

SOME OF YOU MAY HAVE BEEN UP LATE.

GOT CHILDREN I BET.

SAY THAT AGAIN? ME TOO.

ME TOO.

WE'RE GONNA TALK ABOUT THAT LATER TOO.

ABOUT THE PLAYOFFS.

WHAT'S GOING ON.

ALL RIGHT.

GOOD TO GO? I WILL PUT IT ON.

ABSOLUTELY.

ALL RIGHT SO, LET'S GO AHEAD AND GET STARTED.

REALLY? I GO THERE ALL THE TIME.

SMALL WORLD.

SMALL WORLD.

ART SO €" €" THANK YOU ALL AGAIN FIRST AND FOREMOST FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION.

I MEXICAN ASK FOR A LITTLE BIT MORE PARTICIPATION FOR THIS SECOND HALF.

WE'RE GONNA DO A FEW DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES.

HOPEFULLY, LIKE I SAID, HEY, ARE YOU AWAKE? I DOTES A LITTLE CHILLY IN HERE.

YOU CAN GET COMFORTABLE FOR YOU FOR FRUIT SNACKS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

YOU NEED TO GO AHEAD AND GRAB ONE.

WE'RE GONNA BE HERE FOR ABOUT ANOTHER I WOULD SAY 35 MINUTES OR SO.

HANGING WITH ME WITH THAT? ARE, CAN BE SUPER IMPORTANT.

SOME INFORMATION I REALLY WANT TO SHARE.

WE GIVE YOU SOME INSIGHT ON THE WORK THAT I DO.

FROM ACTIVITY STANDPOINT.

ONE OF ENGAGING WITH STUDENTS, WHETHER IT'S FRESHMAN AT THE UF PROGRAMS IN NEW JERSEY ARE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.

THEY ARE ALL AROUND THE SAME AGE GROUP AS TO BECOME YOUNG ADULTS.

IT'S REALLY REALLY IMPORTANT THAT YOU ENGAGE WITH THEM, BUT YOU ALLOW THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO FEEL SEEN AND FEEL HEARD.

YOU NEVER WANT TO COME WITH INFORMATION FIRST.

INFORMATION, INFORMATION, YOU WILL MAKE THEM FEEL SEEN AND HEARD.

YOU WANT TO BUILD THOSE RELATIONSHIPS.

WANT TO TALK A LOT ABOUT THAT A LITTLE BIT.

GO TO MIKE AND THE CLICKER.

WHEN WORK IS THINGS OUT SO MY HANDS ARE NOT FREE.

LIVING THE LIFE OF MENTAL WELLNESS, EMOTIONAL WELLNESS, AND RESILIENCE.

THOSE ARE MY CORE CORE VALUES.

THESE ARE THE THINGS THAT I'M THINKING ABOUT.

MENTAL HEALTH, EMOTIONAL WELLNESS, AND RESILIENCE.

THESE ARE THE THINGS THAT EMBODY EACH AND EVERY DAY.

THESE ARE THE THINGS THAT I LIKE TO PASS ON AND TEACH.

SO, WHAT I WANT TO DO IS ACTUALLY SHOW YOU A VERY BRIEF VIDEO.

DO YOU MIND €" €" IF FOR THE VIDEO'S SAKE THAT WE DEMO THEM A LITTLE BIT? IS IT POSSIBLE? WORK AND THEY SEE IT IF WE DEMO IT JUST FOR THE VIDEO? IF NOT, CAN'T A PROBLEM.

YES.

GIVE US A THUMP.

OKAY.

COMICAL, GOTCHA.

WHAT I WANT TO DO BEFORE HE PLAYS THE VIDEO.

WHEN WE ASK YOU THIS.

BY SHOW OF HANDS, HOW MANY OF YOU FEEL OR HAVE FELT BURNT OUT SINCE THE SCHOOL YEAR? THAT'S THE ENTIRE ROOM? [LAUGHTER] ALL RIGHT.

[LAUGHTER] AND WE GET THE WHOLE THING OUT.

NO.

SO, THAT IS THE REALITY OF WHAT IS GOING ON WHEN WE FEEL BURNED OUT AND WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE FEEL BURNED OUT, WE NO LONGER HAVE ANYTHING ELSE TO POOR.

[01:30:04]

RIGHT? AND A LOT OF TIMES, WE FORGET WHY WE GOT INTO THE PROFESSION THAT WE ARE IN.

BECAUSE IT'S NOT BY CHANCE.

A LOT OF TIMES WE FORGET WHY WE ARE IN THIS POSITION WHEN WE CHOSE THIS PROFESSION WHAT WAS THE WORK WE WANT TO DO? BUT WE STUDY SO HARD TO GET HERE SERVE? SO, ON A SHOW YOU A VERY, VERY BRIEF VIDEO BEFORE I DIVE INTO THE PRESENTATION ABOUT YOUR WIFE AND IT SUPER IMPORTANT TO CONSTANTLY REMIND YOURSELF OF THAT WIDE.

HIS WOMAN THE SCHOOLS WHEN I'M SPEAKING AND TRAVELING €" €" I CAN GET BURNT OUT AS WELL.

I HAVE TO REVERT AND STAND BACK.

AND REMEMBER WHY I'M DOING THIS.

THE BIGGER PICTURE IS WHAT MATTERS.

THAT'S WHAT'S CAN ALLOW YOU TO PERSEVERE AND CONTINUE TO BE RESILIENT.

AND CONTINUE TO SHOW UP WITH INTEGRITY AS YOU SERVE THESE STUDENTS.

OKAY? SO, WE'RE GONNA PLAY THIS BRIEF VIDEO.

>> IS TRENDING UP A LITTLE BIT.

>> YOU KNOW YOUR WIFE TO ASSIST YOUR WHAT SHOULD BE MORE CLEAR.

FOR INSTANCE THIS IS PEOPLE IN THE ECONOMY.

THAT'S WHAT I DO.

WHY IS ENTIRELY ITS OWN PURPOSE.

I CAN DO COMPANY, I CAN WRITE BOOKS TO THE SECOND HAVE A MOVIE, IT'S OVERRATED.

BY THE WIFE.

IN FACT, EVERY NEW WEB SERIES CALLED MICHAEL JUNIOR [INDISCERNIBLE] SIX EPISODES ON YOUTUBE.

DROP IN NEW EPISODES ON YOUTUBE €" THIS [INDISCERNIBLE] TO ME, I TRAVELED THE COUNTRY AND €" €" [INDISCERNIBLE] IN THE MIDDLE OF MY COMEDY SOMETIME I WILL STOP AND JUST TALK TO MY AUDIENCE.

AND THE FULFILLMENT IS ENOUGH, IT'S PRETTY COOL.

WERE THEY, WINSTON-SALEM, SHE CLIP FROM WINSTON-SALEM.

AND I WAS TALKING TO THIS GUY IN THE AUDIENCE AND HE TELLS ME HE'S A MUSICAL INSTRUCTOR AT THE SCHOOL.

MCCARTT, WE THIS IS CAN YOU SING SING A SONG? THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED THE LAST EPISODE.

[INDISCERNIBLE] [MUSIC] >> ZERO MUSICAL DIRECTOR, YES SIR.

LET ME GET A COUPLE OF PARTS OF AMAZING GRACE FOR THE FIRST PART OF THAT.

PREPARE?

>> AMAZING GRACE.

HOW SWEET THE SOUND.

[MUSIC] >> OKAY, BROKEN SAYING.

[APPLAUSE] >> ALL RIGHT, ALL RIGHT.

NOW, THIS IS AS IF YOUR UNCLE JUST GOT OUT OF JAIL, YET SHUT THE BACK WHEN YOU WAS A KID.

WE SEE THAT EXISTS.

[LAUGHTER] [MUSIC] [APPLAUSE] >> HE'S JUST MISSING HIS PURPLE HAT RIGHT NOW.

[LAUGHTER] [APPLAUSE] [MUSIC] [APPLAUSE]

[CHEERING] >> THE GO.

[LAUGHTER] >> HE KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING.

SECOND TIME HE KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING IT.

WHEN YOU KNOW YOUR WALLET YOUR WHAT BECOMES MORE IMPACTFUL BECAUSE YOU'RE WALKING TOWARDS YOUR PURPOSE.

>> SO, WE CAN HAVE THE LIGHTS.

PERFECT, PERFECT.

MANY OF YOU ENJOYED THE VIDEO?

>> YES, HE'S IN JUNIOR THIS IS HIS INCREDIBLE PRETTIES A CLEAN COMEDIAN PRODUCING PERSON IS COMEDY.

HIS LETTERS, I LOVE HIS WORK.

SOMETHING HE SAID WAS SUPER SUPER IMPORTANT.

WHY?

[01:35:05]

YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DO.

IF I ASK YOU, YOU CAN TELL ME BREAKDOWN A DESCRIPTION.

YOU CAN GIVE ME ALL YOUR TITLES, BUT WHY DO YOU DO? THAT'S VERY, VERY IMPORTANT FOR THE WORK THAT WE DO, BECAUSE WE ARE WORKING WITH HUMANS.

WE ARE WORKING WITH PEOPLE THAT ARE GOING THROUGH EMOTIONAL CRISIS.

WE ARE WORKING THROUGH THE END OF THE PANDEMIC.

HOPEFULLY THE END OF A PANDEMIC.

AND IT'S GOING TO BE VERY, VERY CHALLENGING.

I WISH I COULD SAY TO YOU THAT YOU KNOW, WE GET THE INFORMATION AND EVERYTHING CAN BE COOL.

REWRITE THIS THING OUT ORGAN OR YELL RESILIENCE AND IT'S GONNA BEAT NOW, THE REALITY IS THAT WE ARE WALKING INTO THE UNKNOWN AND AN EXPECTED.

SO FROM LEFT ARM OURSELVES AND RIVER WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO.

THAT'S A LITTLE SHORT VIDEO.

I THINK IT'S FUNNY.

IT'S HILARIOUS AND THAT BROTHER CAN REALLY SAYING.

THE REASON THIS INTESTACY WAS LIKE THAT €" I CANNOT SIGN, BUT HE WAS DOING HIS THING.

I LOVE IT.

LET'S DIVE INTO THIS RIGHT.

A QUICK PSA.

STUDENTS DON'T CARE MUCH WE KNOW UNTIL THEY KNOW HOW MUCH WE CARE.

I'VE NEVER WORKED WITH THE STUDENT WHOSE FIRST THING HE ASKED ME WHAT MY BACKGROUND APPEARED WHAT SCHOOL DID YOU GO TO? WHAT DEGREES DO I HAVE? THINGS ARE GREAT AND I SAY GET THEM ALL.

MY WIFE IS IN HER DOCTORATE PROGRAM NOW.

NOW, THESE ARE THE THINGS €" €" TITLES DON'T NECESSARILY SAVE LIVES.

I WILL SAY THAT.

WHEN WE REALIZE THAT THIS THIS WILL TAKE OURSELVES OFF THE PEDESTAL AND GET EYE LEVEL WITH THE STUDENTS AND THE PEOPLE WHO NEED HELP.

RIGHT? SO, REMEMBER, THEY DON'T CARE HOW MUCH YOU KNOW.

THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT ALL OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM IN ALL THESE DIFFERENT THINGS.

THEY WANT TO KNOW HOW MUCH YOU CARE ABOUT THEM? AND THAT IS WHERE WE BUILD A BRIDGE.

YOU ARE NOT YOUR DIAGNOSIS.

THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR THOSE IN THE ROOM AS WELL AS YOUR STUDENTS.

AS I'M GOING THROUGH THIS PRESENTATION, I'M GONNA KIND OF DEFINITE OUT AS IF YOU WERE STUDENTS.

IS THAT COOL? SHE GETS HER STUDENTS TODAY.

COOL.

MIGHT BE A FEW MORE USE FOR SOME OF YOU, BUT YOU ARE STUDENTS AGAIN.

WHAT A TRULY BELIEVE IS THAT MANY OF US VIEW OUR DIAGNOSIS AS AN IDENTITY AND AS A RESULT BECOMES OUR IDENTITY.

EXAMPLE GIVEN, I AM DEPRESSED.

CORRECTION, I FEEL DEPRESSED AT TIMES.

AND FOR ME, WHEN I WAS GOING TO MY JOURNEY OF GOING TO SCHOOL TO SCHOOL TO SCHOOL €" €" I WOULD IDENTIFY IS THE THING I WAS GOING THROUGH.

AND I WOULD LOVE THAT EACH AND EVERY DAY.

IS THIS THE THING I SPOKE WITH OVER MY LIFE.

I AM DEPRESSED.

I WILL TAKE SOMETHING THAT WOULD'VE BEEN A MOMENT AND I TURNED IT TO THIS LONG THINK WHAT WE TAKE OF THE DAY, THE WEEK, SOMETIMES MONTHS.

LIVING IN THOSE MOODS.

I WOULD CONTINUE TO FEED THE THING.

THAT WAS MY BEING.

MANY OF YOU DISTANCE THIS CAN BE FUNNY.

HAVE ANY OF YOU SAY YOU'VE BEEN UPSET, FRUSTRATED, MAYBE BACK IN THE DAY EVEN BROKE UP WITH SOMEBODY AND IT WAS ROUGH RELATIONSHIP.

AND YOU THRONGS OF MUSIC I PRETTY MUCH PROMOTED HOW YOU WERE FEELING? I KNOW FOR A LOT OF YOU AND FOR ME IT WAS MARY J BLOTCH.

ONE MIGHT FIND HIS MUSIC IS MAKING ME MORE DEPRESSED? I'M DIVING DEEPER INTO THIS THING.

IT'S VERY INTERESTING.

SO NOW KIND OF COUNTERACTED BY DOING THE OPPOSITE.

I PLAYLISTS MADE THAT I HAVE CREATED TO GET THE HEAD OF CERTAIN MOODS AND FONTS.

BECAUSE OF BEFORE IS LIKE, BUT THE STRAY, MEDICAL MY EX-GIRLFRIEND AND DO THIS IS A BAD SLOPE TO GO DOWN.

AGAIN, WE CANNOT CONTINUE TO FEED THOSE MOODS, RIGHT? SO, PERSON FIRST LANGUAGE, PERSON FIRST LANGUAGE, SUPER IMPORTANT.

AND I LEARNED THIS THROUGHOUT MY MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING.

PERSON FIRST LANGUAGE.

ONE WAS THAT HONORS A PERSON'S INDIVIDUALITY AND HUMIDITY FIRST.

USING THIS LANGUAGE RECOGNIZES THAT A DIAGNOSIS IS NOT WHO A PERSON IS, BUT RATHER A PART OF THEM.

AGAIN, I THINK ABOUT GROWING UP.

AND HOW WE IDENTIFY MY UNCLE WHO HAD A REAL PROBLEM.

THE NOBODY ADDRESS.

WE LABELED HIM WITH THAT PROBLEM.

THAT IS WHO WE WAS.

TO US.

AND IT WASN'T RIGHT.

BECAUSE WE STRIPPED AWAY HIS ACTUAL HUMANITY.

A LOT OF TIMES, YOU'RE OUT AND ABOUT AND WE SEE PEOPLE LIKE THAT.

THIS PERSON IS CRAZY OR THIS PERSON IS DESPERATE AND WE NEED TO PULL BACK AND REALIZE WE'RE STRIPPING THEM OF THEIR COMMUNITY.

THEY'RE JUST LIKE US.

THEY'RE JUST HAVING A ROUGH TIME RIGHT NOW.

AND PRAY THAT THEY GET THROUGH THAT.

SO, TO STATISTICS, MUCK AND STATISTIC YOU HAVE, BECAUSE Y'ALL GOT TOUGH.

YOU GOT THE STATISTICS.

DOCTOR PAMELA FOX GAVE US SOME AMAZING AMAZING INFORMATION THAT I HOPE YOU ALL CAPTURED TOOK SCREENSHOTS OF.

BUT JUST REALLY QUICK €" €" SUICIDE BEING A SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH AMONG COLLEGE AGE STUDENTS, WHICH IS THE GROUP WE ARE WORKING WITH RIGHT NOW AND WE SAY IT'S A LIGHTLY SOMETIMES THAT WE DON'T REALIZE THAT IT'S SUCH A SEVERE ISSUE €" €" IT'S SO SEVERE .

0 THOUGH SCHOOL WAS PRETTY WILL NOT IN THE SCHOOL.

[01:40:01]

HE ASKED ME TO COME SPEAK OF THE MENTAL HEALTH CONFERENCE.

FOR THE SCHOOL.

ACTUALLY IT WAS THREE SCHOOLS.

AND DEFENDANT AT THIS PARTICULAR SCHOOL THAT I WAS SPEAKING AT IN THE SEMESTER.

HOW LONG IS A SEMESTER? THREE OR FOUR MONTHS MAX? THEY LOST EIGHT STUDENTS.

EIGHT STUDENTS ONE SEMESTER.

MOST OF IT HAPPENED AROUND FINALS.

THINK ABOUT THE PRESSURE.

BRIEF TO GET MENTALLY AND EMOTIONALLY TO LOSE THAT MUCH HOPE? WE PULL BACK PEOPLE'S HUMANITY AND WE CAN EMPATHIZE WITH THEM? TO SEEK TO UNDERSTAND THEM.

ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO JENS A.

I KNOW FOR MY ELDERS THAT THERE IS A MISSING BRIDGE IN THE MIDDLE.

BETWEEN MY ELDERS AND JEN SAY.

THEY SEE THEM AS LAZY, ALL THESE DIFFERENT THINGS.

THE REALITY IS THAT THEY ARE VERY INTELLIGENT.

THEY CAN BE VERY EMOTIONAL AT TIMES.

BUT, THAT'S WHERE WE STEPPED IN TO GUIDE THEM.

TEACH THEM THE SKILLS COME TO ACTUALLY NOT EVEN TEACH THEM, BUT EXEMPLIFY.

BECAUSE WE CAN TEACH THEM UNTHINKABLE BUT WE DON'T LIVE IT OUT, IT WILL NOT MATTER.

AS THE COMPARED TIME YOU WANT THAT, DON'T DO THIS DON'T DRINK, DON'T SMOKE.

REPEAT AFTER ME, BUT THEY DO IT RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU EVERY SINGLE DAY.

ASK YOURSELF, AM I LIVING OUT THE THINGS THAT I PREACH? MY PASTOR ONCE SAID YOU CAN PREACH ABOUT A SERMON WITH HER LIFE AND THEN YOUR LIPS.

IT'S VERY, VERY IMPORTANT.

SO, MORE STATISTICS.

LET'S SEE.

AS OF FALL 2020, 89 PERCENT AND THESE NUMBERS FLUCTUATE ALL THE TIME.

TO HIS WILL.

OF COLLEGE STUDENTS REPORTED HAVING ANXIETY AS A RESULT OF COVID-19 IS JUST THEY ALREADY DISTANCE WE WERE ALREADY IN A CRISIS PRIOR TO COVID-19, BUT OBVIOUSLY I DID EVERYTHING FOR STUDENTS AS WELL AS OURSELVES.

YOU CAN OVERLOOK YOU LIKE YOU ARE SUPER IMPORTANT AS WELL.

IF ANYTHING, YOU ARE THE PRIORITY AND A MINIATURE LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THAT AS WELL.

SAVE SPACE CREATION.

THIS IS SOMETHING I BELIEVE I SPECIALIZE IN.

I LOVE TO DO.

ONE OF THOSE THAT IT SERVES AS A RISK REDUCTION METHOD.

SO, WE'RE GONNA CREATE A SAFE SPACE.

GREETINGS SAFE SPACE STARTED WHEN I TOLD YOU MY STORY.

YOU INSTANTLY START TO FEEL A LITTLE MORE COMFORTABLE AROUND ME.

BECAUSE I BECAME MORE HUMAN TO YOU.

AGAIN, I'M NOT TELLING YOU THE MOST IN THE ROOM AND SAY I WANT TO THREE DIFFERENT TEST IS NO, NO, NO.

TO GET, START TO THINK HOW CAN I CREATE THIS SPACE.

HOW CAN IT BE MORE RELATABLE AND SEE MORE HUMAN TO YOU? HOW CAN SHE YOUTUBE THAT I ALSO HAD A FEW CHALLENGES AND THAT I HAD TO BUILD UP MY RESILIENCE.

THAT IS SUPER IMPORTANT START THAT WAY.

AND FILL IN THE GAP.

SO, WHEN I WENT TO MY MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING AND ME BEING AN ADVOCATE €" I'VE LEARNED TO FILL THE GAPS.

NOT A LICENSED THERAPIST.

MY WIFE IS.

THE COUNSELOR.

ALSO THE PERSON WHO FILLS THE GAP.

GETS THEM TO YOU.

WE NEED TO WORK TOGETHER.

AND HONESTLY, WE NEED MORE PEOPLE WHO CAN FILL THE GAP.

AND BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT A LICENSED THERAPIST OR A SOCIAL WORKER OR CLINICIAN OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU CANNOT HELP IN THIS FIGHT THAT WE HAVE RIGHT NOW.

NEED ALL HANDS ON DECK.

ALL HANDS ON DECK.

SO, NEED TO TEACH YOU HOW TO FOR THE GAP.

SO, LITTLE HARD TO SEE, BUT WE'RE GONNA WORK.

ANYWAY.

QUICK MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID ACTION PLAN, WE CALL THE ALGAE.

ASSESS, LISTEN, ENCOURAGE.

AND ENCOURAGE.

AGAIN, ASSESS LISTEN FOR ASSESS, LISTEN, GIVE, ENCOURAGE, ENCOURAGE.

, THIS IS ONE SOMETHING A SITUATION IS GETTING SEVERE.

WHILE CAMPUS, REDUCING SOME THINGS WITH STUDENTS.

BUT THIS COULD BE A REAL CRISIS SITUATION.

THE STUDENT MIGHT BE ON THE VERGE OF HURTING THEMSELVES.

WE NEED TO ASSESS FOR RISK OF SUICIDE OR HARM.

USE YOUR JUDGMENT OR HARM.

USE YOUR ACTUAL JUDGMENT AND ASSESS.

THIS NONJUDGMENTALLY PUT ON THE NUMBER LISTEN TO YOUR BRAIN SPREAD LISTEN.

WE'RE GONNA TALK ABOUT THIS IN A FEW MORE SITES.

LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN.

IT'S A SKILL THAT SO MANY INDIVIDUALS DO NOT HAVE.

AND DON'T CULTIVATE OR DEVELOP.

WITH THE INFORMATION FIRST.

HAPPY INFORMATION IF YOU HAVE NOT LISTENED TO THE PROBLEM? AGAIN, GOES BACK TO COMING OFF THE PEDESTAL.

LISTEN NONJUDGMENTALLY.

GIVE REASSURANCE AND INFORMATION.

CONTINUE TO REASSURE.

ENCOURAGE APPROPRIATE PROFESSIONAL HELP.

FOR ME, I KNOW MY BOUNDARIES FOR WHAT I CAN DO ETHICALLY.

IN A STILL POINT WHERE I NEED TO REFER YOU OFF, THAT'S WHAT YOU DO.

WORK PROFESSIONALS.

THEY ARE ALL AROUND US TO BE OF DIFFERENT RESOURCES IN THE BUILDING.

PLEASE GET CONNECTED.

ENCOURAGE SELF-HELP AND OTHER SUPPORT STRATEGIES.

SO, THESE ARE THE FOUR CORE PILLARS IN BUILDING A SAFE SPACE.

[01:45:01]

I CREATED THESE FOUR PILLARS €" IT SHOWS THAT A MENTAL HEALTH CONFERENCE IN WASHINGTON DC PETE HAVE ANY OF YOU KNOW TO WRITER P HANSEN? WERE THEY CALL IT COOKIE EMPIRE? I DON'T WATCH EMPIRE SO I DON'T KNOW.

SO, SHE IS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION CALLED THE BORIS MORE INTENSIVE FOUNDATION.

NAMED AFTER HER FATHER.

WHO BATTLED WITH MENTAL ILLNESS AND PASSED AWAY.

AND WITH HIS CONFERENCE ME AND MY WIFE AND THE CONFERENCE WAS THIS HUGE CONFERENCE OF BLACK MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS.

COME TOGETHER TO TRY AND THINK ABOUT IDEAS TO BRING TO LOW INCOME COMMUNITIES OR HOW WE CAN SERVE THE PEOPLE THERE WHO DON'T HAV THE RESOURCES.

AND AT THE END OF THIS CONFERENCE, SOMETHING THAT I REALLY TOOK €" JUST CAME FROM A GUY NAMED MICHAEL LINDSAY.

I TOOK ONE OF HIS SESSIONS CALLED MAN UP AND HE SHARED A QUOTE.

AND HE SAID LOVE BLACK MEN AND CHILDREN LIKE THEY'VE NEVER BEEN HATED.

AND I REMEMBER IT HIT ME REALLY HARD.

AND THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE CONFERENCE, LEARNING ABOUT ACES, IS LEARNING ABOUT ALL THESE DIFFERENT THINGS.

WHAT I TOOK FROM IT, BY THE SUM IT UP IS LOVE.

WAS NEEDED.

LOVE WAS WHAT WAS NEEDED.

AND NOT JUST SOME WATER DOWN VERSION OF LOVE WHERE LOVE YOU.

IT WAS LIKE SHOW ME.

ACTION STEPS.

SO, DEVELOPED THAT PLAN AND I STARTED TO PUT INTO PLACE RIGHT AFTER THE CONFERENCE FOR THIS WAS IN 2019 TO JUNE 20, 2018.

MY DEVELOP THIS AND I STARTED TO PUT INTO PRACTICE AND ITS LISTEN.

I TOLD YOUNGMAN TO BRING THIS INTO YOUR SKULL.

OPEN HEART.

AND I'LL SHARE MORE ABOUT THAT.

VALIDATE.

ENCOURAGE.

IF UTILIZED THIS AT EVERY PROGRAM THAT I'VE DONE IN EVERY SCHOOL THAT HAVE BEEN TO.

IT'S WORKED LIKE A CHARM.

AND I'M NOT SAYING IT'S PERFECT.

I'M JUST SAYING IT WORKS.

LISTEN.

BEFORE YOU OFFER ANY INSIGHT INTENTLY LISTEN.

YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO REMEMBER THE CONVERSATION.

YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO REMEMBER THE PERSON'S NAME WHO YOU'RE TALKING WITH.

THAT'S HOW YOU SHOULD BE LISTENING.

YOU SHOULD BE LISTENING IN A WAY WERE ALREADY IN YOUR BRAIN THINKING THIS IS SOME CANNOT RESPOND.

BECAUSE WHAT YOU'RE DOING IS DISMISSING THEIR VOICE AND THEIR PROBLEMS. LISTEN.

SUPER SUPER SUPER IMPORTANT IN THIS IS ACTUALLY HACK FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE IN MARRIAGES AND RELATIONSHIPS.

LISTEN ONCE IN A WHILE YOU KNOW NOTHING? LISTEN.

[LAUGHTER] MAYBE YOU'LL BE ALL RIGHT.

MAYBE YOU GET SOME DINNER.

[LAUGHTER] OPEN HEART.

EMBRACE THE EMOTIONS OF THE PERSON YOU'RE COMMUNICATING WITH.

EMOTIONAL RESPONSES MIGHT BE EMOTIONAL OR DISMISSIVE.

YOU WANT TO DEVELOP AN OPEN HEART.

AND WHAT I MEAN BY THAT IS YOU WANT TO BE ABLE TO EMBRACE THAT INDIVIDUAL WHEN THEY ARE GOING THROUGH THOSE UP AND DOWN ROLLER COASTER EMOTIONS.

YOU DON'T WANT TO JUST BE STILL FACED.

YOU WANT TO NOT FEEL ANYTHING TO GO AHEAD AND EMBRACE THOSE AND FEEL THIS BECAUSE WHAT IT DOES IS THAT IT ALLOWS YOU TO HAVE EMPATHY FOR THAT PERSON.

AND THAT'S WHAT WE WANT TO GET TO.

EMPATHY.

YOU DON'T WANT TO JUST SYMPATHIZE AND CRY WITH THEM AND FALL OUT.

ONE OF EMPATHY BECAUSE THEN YOU CAN ACTUALLY BE OF SERVICE TO THEM.

AND YOU DO THAT YOU'RE HAVING AN OPEN HEART.

VALIDATE.

VALIDATE IS SUPER HUGE BECAUSE EVEN US AS ADULTS IN THIS ROOM, STILL UP TO BE VALIDATED.

WHETHER THAT'S THROUGH FRIENDS OR SPOUSE, COLLEAGUES, AVAILABLE TO VALIDATION.

WE MIGHT NOT ALWAYS ACT LIKE WE WANT TO RECEIVE IT, BUT YOU LOOK SOME VALIDATION.

AND THAT'S THE TRUTH.

THAT'S WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO COME WITH THE WHY WE DRESS THE WAY WE LOVE.

OUR STUDENTS NEED VALIDATION.

THOSE WHO ARE STRUGGLING MENTALLY AND EMOTIONALLY NEED VALIDATION.

THEY NEED TO FEEL SEEN, THEY DID FEEL HEARD, THE NEED TO FEEL LIKE YOU'RE ACKNOWLEDGING THEM.

WITHOUT JUDGMENT.

AND ENCOURAGE.

WHICH WE HAVE HAD ON QUITE A BIT TODAY, BUT ENCOURAGE IS IMPORTANT.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART ABOUT THIS THOUGH IS TO TRULY ENCOURAGE SOMEBODY, I BELIEVE YOU HAVE TO EMBODY SOME LEVEL OF COURAGE WITHIN YOURSELF.

YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO ENCOURAGE YOURSELF.

YOU CANNOT GIVE WHAT YOU DON'T HAVE IT ALREADY.

SO, BEFORE YOU TRY TO PASS OFF ENCOURAGEMENT, MAKE SURE YOU'VE ALREADY ENCOURAGED YOURSELF BUILD YOURSELF UP.

HIS OF NOT AGAIN, YOUR POINT FROM AN EMPTY CUP.

SO, HOW TO CREATE THIS LASTING IMPACT, REQUIRES TWO THINGS.

THE WILLINGNESS TO SHOW UP EVERY SINGLE DAY WITH EFFORT AND ENERGY.

LISTENING NONJUDGMENTALLY.

YOU HAVE TO BE WILLING TO DO THIS WORK.

THIS ISN'T LIKE WORKING IN A RETAIL STORE WHERE YOU CLOCK IN AND CLOCK OUT IT HIT YOUR SHIRTS AND SELL SOME SHIRTS AND ROLL AND FORGIVE TO BE WILLING AND READY TO DO THIS WORK AND IT'S NOT EASY.

IT'S CAN REQUIRE THAT YOU TAKE CARE OF YOU FIRST.

IN ALLOWING PEOPLE TOLD YOU THAT, BUT YOU ARE THE PRIORITY.

TALK TO PARENTAL TIME AND I ASKED HIM HEY, WHO'S THE PRIORITY LIST.

NOTABLY KIDS, CUTE.

IT'S REALLY CUTE.

>> THE POLITICALLY CORRECT ANSWER TO SAY.

THAT'S THE CORRECT ANSWER.

THE REALITY IS THAT YOU'RE THE PRIORITY.

THEY ARE THE PRIORITY.

VERY HIGH PRIORITY.

YOU ARE THE FIRST PRIORITY.

IF YOU DON'T TAKE CARE OF YOU, YOU'RE GIVING THEM MEDIOCRE VERSION OF YOURSELF.

FOR ALL THE LESSONS FROM THE SAY THAT WE FEEL BURNT OUT, IT'S TIME FOR SOME REAL

[01:50:03]

SELF-CARE GOING ON.

FOR YOU.

IT'S REALLY TIME FOR THAT.

WILLINGNESS AND CONSISTENCY.

ONE THING I NOTICED IS THAT STUDENTS TEND TO FALL OFF THE WAGON WORK INTEND TO GO BACK TO THE BEHAVIORS THAT THEIR WANTS AND WENT THE PERSON WHO WAS SHOWING UP FOR THEM BACK CONSISTENCY.

REMEMBER YEARS AGO THAT I WAS THE DIRECTOR OF THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB ATLANTIC CITY AT THE TURNOVER IT WAS JUST CRAZY.

NEW PEOPLE WITH EVERY OTHER MONTH.

AND THE KIDS JUST COULD NOT COMPREHEND WHO IS, AND PRETTY CANNOT CONNECT WITH THEM AND THEY WOULD CONSTANTLY ACT OUT.

BECAUSE THERE WAS NO CONSISTENCY.

IF YOU SHOW FOR SOMEBODY, SHOW CONSISTENTLY.

THAT'S HOW THEY KNOW THEY CAN TRUST YOU.

THEY CAN COUNT ON YOU AND THAT'S WHAT YOU WANT.

THAT'S WHEN PEOPLE START TO REALLY SEE HEALING.

CONSISTENCY, CONSISTENCY, CONSISTENCY AND EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO.

BECAUSE THE REALITY IS THAT YOU CAN JUST CHANGE SOMEBODY'S WHOLE LIFE IN ONE DAY.

YOU TAKE TIME.

ARE YOU WILLING TO BE CONSISTENT IN THIS FIGHT? LEADING WITH LIPID THIS IS THE PART WHERE YOU INTERACT A LITTLE BIT.

I NEED EVERYBODY TO SAY HEY.

>> HEY.

IF SOMETHING ELSE, BUT IT WAS LIKE THE LAST MINUTE THING I CAME UP WITH AN UNOFFICIAL ME THINKING.

I WAS LIKE WHAT WESLEY? WHEN WE SAY? HEY.

[LAUGHTER] SO, LEADING WITH LOVE.

SO, THIS IS THE PROGRAM AND CURRICULUM THAT WE DEVELOP.

WHEN WALKING THROUGH THE SPREAD OBVIOUSLY I CANNOT WALK YOU THROUGH EVERY DAY WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE.

VERY LITTLE INTERACTION.

A FEW OF YOUR GONNA BE STUDENTS.

COOL? COOL.

WHAT DOES IS BUILDING EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING AND RESILIENCE THROUGH COMMUNITY AND CONVERSATION.

CONVERSATION IS CRUCIAL.

THE BUILDING MENTAL WELL-BEING.

IN THIS GUIDE IS USUALLY UTILIZED FOR SCHOOL COUNSELORS.

PEOPLE WHO HAVE NONPROFIT PROGRAMS, MENTORS, WHO ARE LOOKING TO BRIDGE THAT GAP.

IS A LOT OF TIMES THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO TO CONNECT WITH STUDENTS.

SO, IF THE REMAIN RELEVANT.

REALLY QUICK, NOW, WHEN WE CHOOSE THIS FIRST.

HIS FIRST ROW, REALLY THIS QUICK.

YOU GUYS ARE MY STUDENTS.

WHAT I LIKE TO DO IS THIS.

LIKE TO DO MENTAL WELLNESS CHECK IN BEFORE WE DO ANYTHING BEFORE WE START ANY EXERCISES OR ANYTHING WITHIN THE CLASS.

MENTAL WELLNESS CHECK ENTERED WHAT IT DOES IS THIS.

YOU CHECK IN MENTALLY AND EMOTIONALLY, YOU SHARE NUMBER.

1 TO 10, HOW ARE YOU HONESTLY FEELING ON A SCALE OF 1 TO 10.

IF YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE SHARING WHY, YOU COULD SHARE WHY.

IF NOT, WE COULD SHARE NUMBER.

IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE GAUGE THIS BECAUSE I WILL MAKE ASSUMPTIONS THAT EVERYBODY'S OKAY.

IF SMILE ON HER FACE, BUT YOU COULD BE HERE TOO.

IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE ENGAGE WE CONSTANTLY GO BACK DAY IN AND DAY OUT.

ASK THEM EVERY SINGLE DAY.

SO POINTING IT OUT WHERE MY STUDENTS BEAT ME TOO.

MR. NICK AND MY FEELING TODAY? WHAT'S YOUR NUMBER? AND ON THE GO SHOOT.

WITH THE ABOUT.

SO, REALLY THIS REALLY QUICK PRINT REALLY GO THROUGH THIS FRONT ROW.

ONE THROUGH 10.

SHE NEVER COULD HIRE FEELING SIR.

EIGHT?

>> EIGHT? SEVEN? ALL RIGHT.

SEVEN? THREE?

>> SIX?

>> EIGHT?

>> EIGHT.

ART, THIS ANYBODY WANT TO SHARE WHY THEY CHOSE THAT NUMBER? OKAY.

WHO WILL GO WITH YOU TWO.

>> WELL, WHICH IS A THREE BECAUSE THIS IS ABOUT THE FINISHING OF THE STUDENT ACTUALLY PAID HIM AN ACTUAL STUDENT AT DELL'S COLLEGE.

AND IT'S COMING UP AND I'M JUST TRYING TO DO HER THING AGAIN TO GRADUATE.

AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER.

>> I GOT YOU.

[APPLAUSE] THANK YOU.

THANK YOU.

ALL RIGHT, ALL RIGHT.

>> AM ALSO A STUDENT.

>> HIM IN OVER THINKER.

SO OBVIOUSLY I SWAM SEVEN.

>> THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU FOR YOUR TRANSPARENCY AND SHARING.

NOW, WHAT THIS DOES IS THIS.

ONCE YOU HEAR MULTIPLE STUDENTS SHARE OVER TIME, HE BEGAN TO GET MORE COMFORTABLE SHARING.

BUT WHAT YOU'RE GOING THROUGH AGAIN, THIS IS ALL ABOUT BREAKING DOWN THOSE WALLS SO WE CAN ACTUALLY HAVE THE ROOT OF THE ISSUES.

THANK YOU BOTH FOR PARTICIPATING IN THAT.

SO, LEARNING OBJECTIVES.

THIS IS WHAT WE ARE LOOKING TO DO WHEN WE GO TO THE SCHOOLS.

WORKING WITH THE STUDENTS INTERACT WITH THE GROUPS.

ESTABLISH CONNECTIONS WITHIN THE GROUP.

BUILD TRUST AMONGST GROUPS COUNSELORS FOR GROW AWARENESS ABOUT SELF ANYWHERE EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING.

NOW, WHAT'S THE PURPOSE? WE LIKE TO DO IS BREAK DOWN THE PURPOSE OF THE GROUP ON WHAT WE HEAR HERE WITH THE STUDENTS.

I NOTE FOR THE STUDENTS THERE USUALLY DON'T TO THE SPIRIT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ALWAYS THINK THEY ARE IN TROUBLE.

SO, THINK WHAT MY DOING HERE? I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW I WAS GETTING DISHES LIKE WHOA, WHOA, WHOA.

THIS IS NOT WHAT THAT IS.

A LOT OF TIMES THEY COME IN AND THAT'S THE MOOD IN HIS ENERGY AND WE CAN NEGATIVELY GET TEMPERED SO, WE SHOULD WHAT'S THE PURPOS AND WHERE WE HERE? WE ALSO ASKED THE STUDENTS WHAT YOU HOPING TO GET OUT OF THIS GROUP? BECAUSE THIS IS ABOUT YOU.

WE WANT TO GET OUT OF THIS? THAT'S IMPORTANT TO GIVE THEM THAT POWER AND PUT THE BALL IN THEIR COURT.

[01:55:02]

WE WANT FROM THIS? AND WE ASKED HIM THAT OVER TIME AS WELL PAID WHAT THEY WANT FROM US? SUPER IMPORTANT.

WHAT ARE OUR GUIDELINES? WE SHARE GUIDELINES.

NOW, WE DON'T COME IN AND DO IS JUST GIVE THEM A BUNCH OF RULES.

WE ACTUALLY ALLOWED TO MAKE AND PARTICIPATE HEY, LET'S MAKE THE GOVERNMENT TOGETHER.

WE THINK THE RULE SHOULD BE? JUST A FEW EXAMPLES OF THINKING RESPECTING EACH OTHER AND ONE ALIKE WILL PUT ONE PERSON IS NOT TALKING AND THE OTHER PERSON IS IN.

AND THEN ASK FOR HELP WHEN NEEDED FOR THAT THE BIG ONE.

AGAIN, WE GIVE THEM THE POWER TO CREATE THIS SPACE.

I'M JUST THERE REALLY TO MONITOR.

AND GIVE THEM A FEW DIFFERENT GUIDELINES.

THEY ARE CREATING THIS AMONGST THEMSELVES BECAUSE WHEN I LEAVE, YOU'RE STILL AMONGST YOUR PEERS.

WE WANT YOU TO BE EMPOWERED TO DO THIS.

JUST BREATHE.

I'M ACTUALLY DECISION WHAT KNOW, YOU GUYS DESERVE IT.

GUESS DESERVE A QUICK SEVEN BREATHS PER MINUTE.

I WAS GOING TO DO THIS, BUT FOR TIME SAY, WE'RE GONNA CUT YOU DOWN TO SEVEN QUICK BREATHS.

WE DID SOME INCREDIBLE BREATHING WORK WITH YOU IF LITTLE EARLIER, WHICH IS POWERFUL PRINT LIKE TO DO EVERY MORNING LITTLE BIT O MEDITATION PEOPLE WE DO WITH OUR STUDENTS, WHICH IS POWERFUL.

SO NOW, WHAT YOU'LL NOTICE IS THIS.

IF YOU NOTICE SOMEONE IN THIS CLASSROOM SETTING THE STAGE IT'S REALLY HARD FOR STUDENTS TO STAY STILL.

THERE WAS FIDGETING.

WAS MOVING PROTECTION THE POCKETS.

AND A LOT OF THEM CANNOT CLOSE THEIR EYES.

IT FIGHT AGAINST IT.

A LOT OF THEM WITH THEM OPEN.

THOSE ARE SIGNS.

OF DIFFERENT THINGS THAT THEY MAY HAVE WENT THROUGH.

THEY HAVE EXPERIENCED.

SO, GIVES YOU A LITTLE MORE INFORMATION ON HOW TO APPROACH THEM.

AND OVER TIME YOU WILL NOTICE WITHIN A WEEK TO ASSIST THIS STUDENT BEGINS TO BE MORE COMMON CLOSES THEIR EYES BUT THESE ARE GREAT SIGNS.

RIGHT? .

IT IS REALLY QUICK PRINT SEVEN BREATHS AND WHEN YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES.

ONE OPULENT COULD WILL NOT BE LONG FOR DON'T FALL ASLEEP ON ME PLEASE.

SEVEN BREATHS.

SEVEN BREATHS.

NOW, JUST FOLLOW MY VOICE.

I WANT NOBODY TO TAKE IT DEEP BREATH IN.

LET IT OUT.

BIG DEEP BREATH IN.

BUT IT UP.

BIG DEEP BREATH IN.

THIS IS YOUR PERSONAL TIME.

LET IT OUT.

BE SELFISH AT THIS TIME.

BIG DEEP BREATH IN.

LET IT OUT.

BIG DEEP BREATH IN.

AND LET IT OUT.

WE'VE GOT TWO MORE EVERYBODY.

BIG BIG DEEP BREATH IN.

LET IT OUT.

LAST ONE, BASED ONE.

BIG DEEP BREATH IN.

LET IT OUT.

ONLY TO SLOWLY BLINK YOUR EYES OPEN.

WHEN YOU TAKE YOUR HANDS DEALT WITH THIS.

GOOD, GOOD, GOOD.

SO, ALL OF THE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS THAT YOU MAY HAVE WOKE UP WITH THIS MORNING AND STRESSES AND ANXIETIES AND WORRIES THE THINGS EAGER TO OFFER THIS TO RON NEXT WEEK.

I WANT YOU TO GO AHEAD AND YOU END UP WITH THOSE THOUGHTS.

PRINT CLOSER TO YOUR MOUTH.

AND I WANT YOU TO BLOW THOSE OUT.

WILL NEED THIS RIGHT NOW.

WE NEED YOU FOCUS.

[LAUGHTER] CAN LET THOSE ATLASES OUT.

SO, WE USUALLY GO A LITTLE MORE IN DEPTH WITH THE PREWRITTEN MUSIC ON THE BACK AND COULD WE GO ABOUT TWO OR THREE MINUTES AND WE ALLOW THEM TO REALLY GET INTO DEEP SPACE PRITIKIN WALKING THROUGH.

IT SUPER SUPER IMPORTANT FOR THEM TO SLOW DOWN AND THINK ABOUT WHAT THEY'RE DOING BECAUSE THEY ARE SO ANXIOUS ALL THE TIME.

ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE SOMEBODY WHO'S DOING WITH HIGH STRESS.

PROCESSING WHAT I FEEL.

THIS EARLY IN THE SPRING HAVE SOME SORT OF PAPER? OR PHONE? OR PHONES.

YOU GUYS GO PHONES.

OR PHONES.

WE'VE GOT PHONES.

IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT.

MINERAL TO THIS ACTIVITY.

PROCESSING WHAT I FEEL WE'RE GONNA USE PROMPTING QUESTIONS.

SOUND GOOD? WE'RE GONNA DO A LITTLE INTERIOR EXAMINATION.

THIS IS IMPORTANT AND EXIT PRACTICE THIS WHENEVER PHILIP AND GETTING REALLY ANXIOUS OR SOMETHING PUT A STOP AND ASK MYSELF THESE FOUR QUESTIONS.

WHAT HAPPENED? WERE WE FEELING? MY TELLING MYSELF WHAT IS THE COUNTER INSTINCTUAL ACT? I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT A TIME VERY RECENT.

THE RECENT PICNIC BE TODAY, YESTERDAY, HE MUST BE, THINK ABOUT A TIME WHEN YOU WERE ANXIOUS OR JUST HIGH STRESS AND ASK YOURSELF WHAT HAPPENED? WHEN MY FEELING? ARE MY TELLING MYSELF? WHAT IS THE COUNTER INSTINCTUAL ACT? AND IF YOU NEED TO SCREENSHOT THIS, DEFINITELY DO IT.

UTILIZE THESE QUESTIONS.

BECAUSE ONCE YOU THINK IT ALL THE WAY THROUGH, YOU'LL REALIZE THAT THE THING THAT YOU WERE STRESSED ABOUT IS NOT IS THAT AS HE THOUGHT WAS.

OUR MINDS AT TIMES TEND TO PLAY TRICKS ON US IN THE INTERNAL DIALOGUE IS THE BEAST.

IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO RETAIN IT.

I'LL GIVE YOU A FEW MORE SECONDS.

[02:00:02]

WHAT HAPPENED JUSTICE WHAT WAS THE SCENARIO, OR MY FEELING RIGHT NOW? MY TELLING MYSELF ABOUT WHAT I'M FEELING WAS THE COUNTER INSTINCTUAL ACT? THERE'S ALWAYS A WAY OUT.

ART, MOVING FORWARD.

A FEW MORE MINUTES HERE.

REFLECTION.

RELATED WITH THE STUDENTS, AND PEOPLE WERE IN THIS GROUP, WHAT I WANT TO TAKE AWAY FROM TODAY'S SESSION €" €" WHAT ARE THINGS THA YOU GATHER? GIVING AN OPPORTUNITY TOGETHER AND BRING BACK THINGS THAT THEY TALK ABOUT THE PEERS WITH CUPID WERE YOUR TAKEAWAYS? THIS HOW ENTITY.

LISTENING AND PARTICIPATING.

YOU GETTING SOMETHING FOR THIS.

SO WE CAN ASSESS WHAT'S GOING ON.

AND THAT WE DO ANOTHER CHECK IN.

AS WE STARTED HERE WITH 1 TO 10.

I WILL NOT DO IT AGAIN SO WANT TO KNOW IF YOU NEVER CHANGE.

AFTER WE BEEN TOGETHER FOR 30 MINUTES TO AN HOUR.

THE UNIVERSE CHANGED? I WANT THE NUMBER TO GROW.

AT LEAST 1 TO 2 NUMBERS.

THAT LEASE.

AND IF IT DOESN'T, TRYING TO PRODUCE THE PERFECT WAY TO GAUGE BECAUSE YOU CANNOT MAKE ASSUMPTIONS ON HOW SOME REFILLS.

BY LOOKING AT THEM.

ON A RELENTLESS YOU SHARE.

THE POWER OF AFFIRMATIONS.

REALLY REALLY HUGE ON AFFIRMATIONS AND WORDS.

AS I TALKED ABOUT EARLIER WITH THE I AM STATEMENTS AND IDENTIFYING WITH THE THINGS THAT YOU GOING THROUGH.

INSTEAD OF SEPARATING YOURSELF FROM THAT IS YOUR IDENTITY, I'M REALLY BIG ON AFFIRMING YOURSELF.

BUT THE STUDENTS ALL THE TIME,, THEY TODAY IS THAT WE LIVE BY AFFIRMATIONS PRINT WHETHER WE WANT TO BELIEVE IT OR NOT.

AS SOON AS WE WAKE UP, OUR BRAIN IS ON AFFIRMATIONS MOVE.

I'M TIRED, I'M THIS, I'M THAT.

I HAVE TO GO TO WORK, IT'S MONDAY AGAIN? YOUR BRAIN IS CONSTANTLY FEEDING YOU QUICKLY AND A LOT OF TIMES WE FALL INTO AUTOMATIC NEGATIVE THOUGHTS.

LIKE THE CALL OF ANTS.

RIGHT? IF YOU DON'T CONTROL ANTS, THE REP CRAZY.

VERY QUICK STORY.

I HAVE TWO SMALL DOGS.

A YORKY AND A TERRIER MIX.

TWO SMALL DOGS.

NIXON ROXY PRINTER GONNA GO CRAZY WHEN I GO HOME PADILLA'S DEMAND.

I WANT THEM EVERY MORNING AROUND 5 AM.

THIS PARTICULAR MORNING I'M COMING DOWN THE STAIRS AND LET'S PUT A LEASH ON THEM AND HIM WALKING PAST THEIR KITCHEN.

THE TRASH CANS AND THEN I SEE THE BIG BLACK STRIP OF JUST I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS.

AND I STOPPED TO REALIZE THAT IT'S ANTS.

LEADING FROM THE TRASHCAN ALMOST TO THE LAUNDRY ROOM.

REASON I BRING THAT UP AS THIS.

I COULD'VE IGNORED THE ANTS.

IN WALKING THE DOGS.

BUT I HAD TO ADDRESS THE ANTS, BECAUSE I DIDN'T ADDRESS THEM IT WOULD'VE GOT WORSE.

THE SAME THING WITH THEIR NEGATIVE THOUGHTS.

WITH THOSE THAT WE DON'T ADDRESS THIS IS TO GET WORSE.

SHE STARTED TO ADDRESS THOSE ANTS THERE GONE INTO MY KITCHEN AND DRIVING ME CRAZY, YOU HAVE TO ADDRESS THOSE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS THAT COME UP.

ESPECIALLY THE ONES THAT ARE CONSISTENT.

THE ONES THAT YOU CONSTANTLY THINK THOUGHTS THAT YOU HAVE FOR A WEEK STRAIGHT.

YOU NEED TO ADDRESS THOSE THOUGHTS.

DO NOT IGNORE THEM.

BECAUSE THEY WILL BECOME WORSE.

SO, WE DO AFFIRMATIONS.

GIVE EXAMPLES IN THIS I AM BLESSED, AND HELD AND LEFT.

I GIVE THEM EXAMPLES IN CASE THEY NEED ONE.

RIGHT BECAUSE NOBODY WRITES POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS.

GIVE THEM A DIFFERENT EXAMPLE.

EXPLAIN WHAT THEY ARE IN THE POWER OF USING THEM.

IN THE I GO THROUGH AFFIRMATIONS AS A GROUP WHILE THEY REALLY HAVE THEIR OWN.

NOW THAT I HAVE YOU ALL AS A GROUP, ONCE IT IS REALLY QUICKLY WITH YOU ALL.

SOUND GOOD? COOL.

WHEN REPEAT AFTER ME.

I AM ENOUGH.

>> AM ENOUGH.

I AM LOVED.

I AM WORTHY.

>> MICHIGAN REPEAT THAT ONE BECAUSE I NEED YOU TO FILL THAT LITTLE ONE.

I AM WORTHY.

A LOT OF TIMES WHEN I HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH MYSELF IS THAT I DID NOT FEEL WORTHY ENOUGH TO GET THE HEALING THAT YOU NEED.

I WAS REVERTED BACK TO THE THING THAT MADE ME COMFORTABLE, WHICH IS TRAUMATIC.

AT THE OF TO GET TO A PLACE OF WORTHY GET TO A PLACE OF HEALING.

NOT THAT YOU CAN GET THE HELP, NOT THAT THE HELPLESS FOR YOU AND THAT YOU CAN LIVE A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE MENTALLY AND EMOTIONALLY.

I AM WORTHY.

>> AND WEATHER.

I AM NOT DEFINED BY MY PAST.

>> AM NOT DEFINED BY MY PAST.

>> AND BECOMING THE BEST VERSION OF MYSELF.

>> AND BECOMING THE BEST VERSION OF MYSELF.

>> YOU CAN RUN TO THIS AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT WITH STUDENTS IN GROUPS AND FRIENDS COULD RUN THROUGH A COUPLE TIMES.

I HAVE THEM GET UP AND GET ENERGIZED.

WE REALLY GET INTO IT.

AT FIRST YOU CAN TELL THEY'RE KIND OF UNCOMFORTABLE.

I'M WORTHY.

AFTER THE FIFTH TIME ABOUT THEM JUMPING UP AND DOWN PIECE AND THEN KEEP STARING AT YOU UNTIL YOU DO IT.

GET THEM UNCOMFORTABLE AND GET THE MOVE IN, RIGHT? AT THE SMILING AND LAUGHING COULD GET THEM JOYFUL.

SUSTAINING OUR SICK SPACE.

WHAT IS SAID HERE STAYS HERE.

WHAT IS LEARNED HERE LEAVES HERE.

OF COURSE, IF THERE'S SOMETHING REP TO REPORT SOMEBODY, I WILL.

BUT FOR THE MOST PART, WHAT IS SAID HERE STAYS HERE.

WHAT YOU LEARN HERE LEAVES HERE.

BECAUSE YOU CAN DO THE SAME THING FOR SOME DEALS.

SO IT'S THE SAME THING FOR THE SYMPOSIUM.

WHAT'S LEARNED HERE NEEDS TO LEAVE HERE.

[02:05:02]

BECAUSE PEOPLE WHO NEED THE HELP, THEY ARE NOT IN THIS ROOM RIGHT NOW.

SO, WE HAVE TO GET OUT THERE AND DO THE WORK.

NEXT STEPS, THREE, TWO, ONE.

GO BE THE CHANGE.

ACTION, ACTION PUT UP A CONNECTION GO.

SOMETHING ABOUT SMALLTALK THAT JUST DOESN'T WORK FOR ME.

SORRY.

REAL BIG LIKE ACTION, OR WE DON'T? WHERE WILL THIS MEETING FOR 30 MINUTES WHEN I COULD BEEN FIVE? LET'S GET TO IT.

LET'S PUT THESE THINGS IN PLACE AND LET'S MOVE PERSON HE SAID WELL.

[LAUGHTER] THEY GOT TIRED OF THEM.

DON'T GET IN TROUBLE.

SO, THREE, TWO, ONE.

THIS IS FOR THE ALL OF YOU AND THIS IS I WILL CITE YOUR HOMEWORK.

YOU SCREENSHOT THAT ARE RIGHT IN.

I WANT YOU TOGETHER THREE RESOURCES TO LEARN FROM TODAY'S SYMPOSIUM.

THE THREE RESOURCES? IT CAN BE SOMETHING I SAID.

SOMETHING PAMELA FOX SAID.

IT COULD BE SOMETHING YOU LEARN FROM ONE OF THE PARTNERS.

WHATEVER IT IS.

WHAT ARE THREE RESOURCES YOU CAN LEARN FROM TODAY'S SYMPOSIUM? WE DON'T WANT TOGETHER FOR THE SAKE OF GATHERING AND WE DO NOTHING.

WAYS TAKE SCREENSHOTS HERE AND IT WAS BEAUTIFUL.

WE PLAN OF IT.

SHOW ME THAT YOU WERE IN THE ROOM ABOUT WHAT YOU DO.

THREE RESOURCES TO REMEMBER FROM TODAY'S SYMPOSIUM.

WHAT ARE TWO THINGS THAT YOU LEARNED TODAY? RIGHT? TWO THINGS THAT YOU LEARN TODAY THAT YOU APPLY? AN ACTION STEPS JUST AS I WOULD TAKE TO IMPROVE MY OWN TO WELLNESS.

WAS ONE ACTION STEP THAT YOU WILL TAKE.

IT COULD BE BREATHING.

WHATEVER THAT THING IS.

WHAT IS ONE THING? ACTION, ACTION, ACTION.

IF THE TAKE ACTION FOR THINGS TO OCCUR.

THREE, TWO, ONE.

GO BE THE CHANGE.

NOW THIS IS FOR ALL THE ROOM THAT RAISED HER HAND TO YOUR BURNT OUT.

WE SAY THIS WITH LOVE AND KINDNESS.

SELF-CARE IS NOT AN OPTION.

IT'S A NECESSITY.

LISTEN TO ME.

IT'S AN OPTION FOR ANY OF YOU.

IT'S A NECESSITY.

WAS SADISTIC AND STUBBORN WESTERN PARENT.

THIS IS NOT AN OPTION.

IT'S A NECESSITY IN AGE TO BE DONE.

LET'S NOT TALK ABOUT ENOUGH.

BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO THINK I CAN COME IN AND SPEAK TO 500 STUDENTS.

IT'S BEAUTIFUL.

IT'S GREAT, WE THE RIGHT TIME.

STUDENTS FEEL EMPOWERED.

WHO'S WITH THEM ALL THE TIME, NOT ME.

TELL OF YOU.

YOU HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF FIRST.

IS WHAT GOOD ARE YOU IF YOU BURN IT? I THERAPIST SAID THIS TO ME ABOUT THREE WEEKS AGO.

AND I WAS TELLING HER, MAN, I'M FEELING REALLY ANXIOUS LATELY.

JUST FEELING REALLY ANXIOUS.

AND SHE IDENTIFIED THAT SUCCESS WAS ONE OF MY TRIGGERS.

PINGS ARE SOME THINGS THAT HAPPENED IN CHILDHOOD COULD ONE OF REFLECTION GETTING A LITTLE BIT OF SUCCESS.

I'M GETTING A LITTLE BIT FORWARD.

I FREAK OUT.

AND I JUST HAVE A BREAKDOWN.

HERE'S THE THING.

SUCCESS IS NOT ABOUT TO STOP.

ONE WAY THIS STOPPED FOR YOU IS IF YOUR BODY GIVES OUT.

FROM BURNOUT.

SAME FOR ALL OF YOU.

YOU DON'T TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF I THINK WE TALK ABOUT MATTERS.

BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT GOOD TO ANY OF US.

FOR NOT BEING THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF.

I WANT YOU TO REALLY REALLY REALLY FOCUS ON SELF-CARE.

MAYBE YOUR NOSE DONE, WHATEVER THE THING LOOKS LIKE FOR YOU TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR MENTAL HEALTH.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR EMOTIONAL HEALTH.

GONNA TAKE CARE OF YOUR PHYSICAL HEALTH.

WHATEVER THAT THING IS.

AND THEN WE CAN GO OUT AND SERVE.

YOU DON'T WANT TO BE HYPOCRITES.

WE WANT TO SERVE AND WE WANT TO WALK BY AND LEAD BY EXAMPLE.

SO, I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

FOR BEING PRESENT FOR PARTICIPATING, FOR ALLOWING ME THE OPPORTUNITY IN SPACE TO SHOW WESTWARD WITH YOU.

FOR LISTENING NONJUDGMENTAL YEARS.

IT'S A TRUE HONOR.

AND I'M GRATEFUL, THANK YOU TO DOCTOR PAMELA FOX AND ALL THE PARTNERS.

AND THE CHANCE TO PROVE THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO MADE THIS HAPPEN.

I COULD TO THE STUDENTS AND EVERYBODY WHO'S WATCHING ON A SIMULCAST.

THANK YOU TO THE STUDENTS THAT ARE HERE.

I TRULY TRULY APPRECIATE YOU.

I WAS ONCE SOMEBODY WHO'S ON THE OTHER SIDE THAT WAS STRUGGLING AND HURTING THE CANNOT FIGURE THIS SCHOOL THING UP.

I WAS ON THE EDGE OF THINKING ABOUT SUICIDE.

AND NOW AMONG THE OTHER SIDE BEING ABLE TO SHARE MY TESTIMONY AND INFORMATION THAT I GATHERED TO HELP SOME DEALS WHO WAS JUST LIKE ME.

AGAIN, IT GOES BACK TO SHARING YOUR STORY.

AND YOU ALL HAVE THAT NOT WITH ALL AND POWER TO DO THE SAME WITHIN YOUR OWN RIGHT.

SO AGAIN, TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF, DO ME? AND GET BACK ON Y'ALL ABOUT THE SELF-CARE THINKING TO COME BACK AND YOU NOT TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF, WE'RE GONNA HAVE A REAL PROBLEM.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF.

SO WE CAN GO OUT AND SERVE OTHERS PARTICULAR TIME.

IT'S AN HONOR.

IT'S A PLEASURE.

I DID THIS COOL QR CODE THING.

MY ASSISTANT DID.

YOU CAN DEFINITELY DO THE QR CODE SIMILAR INFORMATION.

I'M GONNA BE AROUND AND BLESSED TO BE HERE TO SUPPORT ALL JOKES ASIDE.

[02:10:02]

THANK YOU.

OKAY.

>> DOING ANNOUNCEMENTS TOO.

SO [LAUGHTER] SO WE'RE GONNA DO ABOUT ANOTHER FIVE MINUTE BREAK.

NUMERATOR? EMERGING TO DO THE PANEL WITH THE STUDENTS.

SOUND GOOD? ARE, FIVE MINUTE BREAK AND READY.

[LAUGHTER]

[INDISCERNIBLE] >> CHECK, CHECK.

>> ARE WE GOOD TO GO?

>> YES SIR, WE'RE GOOD.

[LAUGHTER] >> ALL OF THE ROOMS REACTION.

IT WAS FUNNY.

[LAUGHTER] THIS WAS GOOD? OKAY.

WANT ME TO INTRODUCE? ALRIGHT SO, THANK YOU ALL AGAIN.

PATIENT ENGAGEMENT.

WE ARE NOW GOING TO MOVE INTO THIS PORTION RIGHT HERE.

WITH OUR INCREDIBLE STUDENTS.

A MEXICAN HAVE THEM INTRODUCE THEMSELVES.

LET'S HEAR LITTLE BELL ABOUT THEMSELVES AND WE WILL JUMP INTO SOME Q&A, SOUND GOOD? ALL RIGHT.

>> HELLO.

I AM IS DAILY €" €" I AM A STUDENT AT THE DALLAS COLLEGE.

MY HIGH SCHOOL IS SENIOR HILL COLLEGIATE HIGH SCHOOL.

I'M A SENIOR.

I GRADUATE THIS YEAR.

[CHEERING] >> WHEN HE WAS HERE AND I AM A STUDENT.

AS A GO TO CITY VALLEY.

>> HELLO, MY NAME IS CHRISTOPHER TAYLOR FROM A FIRST YEAR COLLEGE TO MY WORK IN THE OFFICES STILL LEFT WHILE WORKING AS BEING AN ASSISTANT GOVERNMENT PRESIDENT.

MY BAD.

>> OG.

>> YOU WANT ME TO GIVE HER THIS MIGHT? OKAY.

YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE IT'S GOOD? IT'S GOOD TO GO?

>> OKAY.

SHE'S COMING UP NOW.

>> CHECK, CHECK.

OKAY.

>> PERFECT, PERFECT, PERFECT DID YOU WANT ME TO KICKOFF WITH THE OKAY, PERFECT, PERFECT, PERFECT.

GETTING THIS OPPORTUNITY TO TALK TO YOU ALL.

FIRST, ON SQ ABOUT THE ACTUAL EXPERIENCE THAT WE ARE HAVING NOW.

WHAT ARE THIS IS BEFORE WE DIVE A LITTLE DEEPER.

I'M GONNA GO DEEP Y'ALL.

CAN YOU GO DEEP.

WHAT ARE OR WHAT WAS ONE TAKE AWAY FOR YOURSELF FROM TODAY? TODAY'S SYMPOSIUM?

>> I WILL NOT PUT YOU ON THE SPOT.

WHAT WE WILL DO IS ACTUALLY JUST GOING ORDER.

>> ONE THING THAT I KNOW I SHOULD BE DOING, BUT I KNOW I HAVEN'T.

I'VE BEEN AVOIDING.

SHE'S FACING MY PROBLEMS. MUCH AS PUTTING IT IN.

I'LL DEAL WITH IT LATER.

I'M NOT, LOOK AT.

I'LL SAVE IT FOR ANOTHER TIME.

I JUST KEEP DOING THAT.

THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL.

PUTTING UP SENIOR YEAR.

SO COLLECTING.

BEFORE I GRADUATE DEPOSITION NEED TO FIND THE TIME TO STOP AND VIEW WHAT'S INSIDE.

>> VERY GOOD.

[APPLAUSE] >> MY THING WOULD BE REFLECTING ON MYSELF AND GIVING MYSELF TIME INSTEAD OF MYSELF OFF AND FOCUSING MORE ON OTHERS.

TIMES TO START FOCUSING ON MYSELF AND SLIPPING SELFLESS AS WELL AS BEING ASSERTING MYSELF.

>> ONE THING I WOULD SAY I GOT FROM THIS WHOLE EXPERIENCE IS THAT PEOPLE WHO GO THROUGH THEIR OWN EXPERIENCES AND JUST LIKE BATTLE SCARS AND DON'T JUST AS TRIVIAL EXPERIENCES.

AND JUST BEING ABLE TO TREAT PEOPLE JUST DIFFERENT I WOULD SAY CLICK ON THINGS EMPATHY.

JUST BEING ABLE TO USE THAT MORE IN LIFE.

[APPLAUSE] >> AS YOUNG STUDENTS WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MAIN CHALLENGES THAT YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE FACED WITH BOTH MENTALLY AND EMOTIONALLY?

>> WERE THINGS THAT YOU'RE GOING THROUGH A NOT THAT YOU FEEL THAT YOUR GENERATION IS REALLY BEING CHALLENGED WITH?

>> IF YOU LIKE TRYING TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERYTHING THAT'S GOING ON IN YOUR LIFE.

YOU'RE THE ONLY DRIVER IN YOUR LIFE.

I'M 18, RIGHT? FRESHMAN YEAR, AT MY SCHOOL, WE'VE ALWAYS BEEN OUT OF THE COLLEGE STUDENT STANDARD.

SO, FROM 15 OR 16 TO 18 JUST IS JUST TRYING TO BE OUR OWN DRIVERS.

OUR STUDIES.

AND JUST HAVE THAT RESPONSIBLY.

YOUNGEST WAS TO DO.

BUT NOT RECOGNIZING SOMETIMES IT'S HARD TO JUST TAKE THAT STEP JUST DO WHAT WE ARE GOING TO BE DOING.

I THINK THAT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO HAVE TO BE YOUR OWN BOSS AND NOT HAVE SOMEBODY TO CONSTANTLY CHECK ON YOU.

BUT NOW, AS A SENIOR, I DON'T HAVE A TEACHER OR A NORMAL TEACHER THAT'S ALWAYS LIKELY CHECK YOUR GRADES.

ASSIST ALWAYS BETWEEN THE SEMESTER IN THE SEMESTER.

THAT'S WHAT I'M TOLD CHRISTOPHER GRADES.

[02:15:03]

WHEN ARRESTED SLIPPING, IT'S NOT SOMEONE THEREFORE THEY ARE THERE, BUT I JUST DESISTED ON SEEM LIKE THEY ARE RIGHT BEHIND ME.

IF THAT MAKES SENSE.

>> OVERALL, I WOULD JUST SAY A SELF REFLECTION MAJORITY OF THE TIME I NOTICE ME AS A STUDENT OVERALL.

OTHER TIMES WE'LL HAVE TIME TO ACTUALLY REFLECT ON HERSELF IN.

IN OUR SELF-AWARENESS.

SO, I FEEL LIKE THAT'S JUSTICE IT'S SAD TO SAY, BUT IT'S CONFUSION AND SELF REFLECTION.

WE'LL HAVE VISTA SOMETIMES WE TEND TO NOT HAVE TIME OR MAKE TIME FOR OUR OWN SELF.

SO, >> I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY THAT LIKE THE FIRST-YEAR COLLEGE STUDENT, I FEEL LIKE THE DIFFERENCE IN HIGH SCHOOL WAS THAT EVERYTHING WAS SCHEDULED.

BOTH LIKE SOCIAL AND JUST THE SORT OF THINGS.

HE UP THE PACE AT YOUR OWN DATE HOW YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE.

>> LIKE TIME HAS BEEN GOING BY PRETTY FAST.

AND I GUESS THAT WOULD BE IT.

>> SO, CAN REFLECT ON WHAT SHE SAID.

>> SHE HAD MENTIONED REFLECTING ON YOURSELF.

AND THAT IS ONE THING THAT I DON'T DO.

I JUST THINK ACADEMICS AND DEFEND MYSELF WITH MY ACADEMICS.

IF ICI PAYS ACROSS THE BOARD, I'M DOING GOOD.

BUT THEN ON THE ACADEMICS, I'M NOT DOING SO GOOD.

BUT I DO FIND MYSELF WITH HOW UNDOING IN SCHOOL.

AND THAT'S NOT WHAT AM SUPPOSED TO BE DOING.

I'M MORE THAN JUST WHAT I PUT OUT ACADEMICALLY.

I HAVE THE EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE THAT I NEED TO ALSO EXPAND.

>> OLATHE, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

[APPLAUSE] >> I WOULD ADD TO THE CONVERSATION AS WELL THOUGH AS I SAY, YOU CANNOT FOR FROM AN EMPTY CUP.

SO, WE HAVE TO FULFILL AND FILL OUR CUPS WITH THE KINDS OF THINGS THAT STATION WITH US THIS MONEY.

SOME OF THE THINGS I MENTIONED THIS MORNING AS WELL.

BECAUSE WE HAVE TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND BE GOOD STEWARDS OF OUR SELF AND TIME.

HE SAID LOOKING AT TIME MANAGEMENT AND I TOOK A CLASS SOME YEARS AGO ABOUT TIME MANAGEMENT.

IT SAID THAT WE HAVE TO ASK OURSELVES THE QUESTION.

IS IT AN URGENT JUSTICE IS AN IMMEDIATE? IS A ROUTINE? AN URGING IS LIKE A 911.

THE HOUSES ON FIRE.

THEY HAVE TO CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT.

IF THE TAKEOVER RIGHT NOW AND IMMEDIATELY THE TRAINER SAID HOPING THAT SHOULD BE DONE 28 TO 48 HOURS.

A ROUTINE IS SOMETHING THAT TYPICALLY CAN BE DONE WITHIN 5€"7 DAYS.

OUR PROBLEM, WHILE WE BURNED OUT AND BECOME A CRISPY CRITTER.

[LAUGHTER] BECAUSE WE IDENTIFY EVERYTHING AS AN URGENT.

EVERYTHING IS NOT AN URGENT.

MOST THINGS IN LIFE ARE A ROUTINE.

SO, WITH A LOOK AT THAT SO WE DON'T GET INTO THE PLACE OF BURNOUT.

AND THE THING THAT ALSO REMINDED OF IS THAT NEXT MONTH €" €" I THINK THE FIRST WEEK IN MAY IS FINALS WEEK.

SO, ANXIETIES BEING HEIGHTENED BECAUSE OF THAT.

AND THE OTHER THING A WEEK OR SO OR 10 DAYS OR SO THEREAFTER IS GRADUATION.

SO, ANXIETY IS REALLY HEIGHTENED RIGHT NOW BECAUSE THESE EVENTS THAT ARE COMING UP ORGAN IMPACT THE STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES.

SO, JUST WANT TO BE MINDFUL OF JUSTICE AS WELL AS HEALTHCARE AND WELLNESS AND COMPASSION.

AND SELF CARE AND COMPASSION AND AWARENESS IS NOT SELFISH.

IT'S A MUST DO.

ON THE LIST THAT WE TALKED ABOUT TODAY.

IDENTIFY THE WILL OF SOMETHING IS URGENT.

IS IT AN IMMEDIATE OR AS A ROUTINE?

>> THAT'S GOOD.

IT'S VERY IMPORTANT.

BY DOING TO DO THAT BECAUSE EVERYTHING AT ONE POINT WAS URGENT, URGENT, URGENT.

THERE THING IN MY CALENDAR WAS URGENT AND I HAD TO GET DONE THEN AT THAT TIME.

AND YOU GET TO THE END OF THE DAY AND YOU BURNOUT.

YOU REALIZE YOU HAVE NOT DONE ANY OF IT AND THAT YOU GO TO SLEEP FEELING UNPRODUCTIVE.

FOR YOU THREE, DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE HAD THE EXAMPLE OF WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE TWO MORE SO ORGANIZE YOURSELF OR HAVE YOU HAD A EXAMPLE OF SOMEONE WHO WAS EMOTIONALLY FLUENT LIKE SOMEBODY WALKED OUT OUT FOR YOU? DID YOU HAVE THOSE EXAMPLES WERE MISSING THIS WAY.

YOU FEEL LIKE YOU WERE WELL PREPARED? FOR RIGHT NOW?

>> FOR RIGHT NOW?

>> WHY WHY NOT?

>> I FEEL LIKE IF I JUSTICE BECAUSE THERE IS PROVIDED WITH RESOURCES.

I TOOK THE INITIATIVE TO TAKE THIS RESOURCE IS NOT PARTIAL TO MAKE IT WORSE LATER, I WOULD JUST WAIT TILL IT WAS THERE.

THAT'S NOT WERE SUPPOSED TO DO.

WE ARE FOR US TO GET UP REPORTS AND SCROLLING BIGGER AND BIGGER.

BECAUSE I KNOW THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR, MY TEACHER WOULD BRING IN DIFFERENT SPEAKERS.

DIFFERENT MENTAL HEALTH SPEAKERS.

LIKE A COHERENT FRONT.

SHE BROUGHT IN HER FOR MEDITATION.

AND WE DID AS A CLASS.

I WAS ALWAYS GRANTED A DIFFERENT RESOURCES.

[02:20:05]

LIKE THE COUNSELOR SERVICES AT DOLLS COLLEGE TO STITCH IT WAS EMBARRASSING MYSELF BECAUSE I KNOW THEM.

THESE PEOPLE KNOW ME PERSONALLY.

I WANT THEM TO KNOW THAT THERE IS ALSO ANOTHER BATTLE UNDER I WANT.

EVEN THOUGH I KNOW THAT I'M TRYING TO STAND FOR THESE STIGMATIZING HEALTH.

BUT BEING LIKE A HYPOCRITE IN THAT WAY, WORRY STIGMATIZE MYSELF.

AND TRY TO TAKE CARE OF MYSELF.

LIKE ON CAMPUS, I CREATED A CLUB CALLED STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH EMOTIONAL SUPPORT.

AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, THE SPRING SEMESTER 2021, WAS A DEFAULT .

21?

>> FALL 20.

>> TALK TO THEM IN THE FRONT.

HAD I STARTED.

SHE DIRECTED ME OVER HERE TO COUNSELING SERVICES.

I HAD TO KEEP TALKING TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE AND KEEP THIS STARTED.

BECAUSE I KNOW AS A STUDENT, THIS TRUST, AS, AND I HAD €" €" I SAY MENTIONED AFFIRMATIONS.

AN EXPERT IN AN AFFIRMATION BOARD.

THERE THE CEDAR VALLEY CAMPUS.

WHERE IN THE STUDENT LIFE CENTER, THERE IS BIG BOARD WITH STICKY NOTES WE COULD WRITE AFFIRMATIONS AND ALSO TAKE SOMETHING THAT YOU THINK RESONATES WITH YOU.

FIRST, I THOUGHT IT WAS SILLY TO GO THROUGH THE AIR I WAS NOT TAKING IT SERIOUSLY.

WHEN I SUGGESTED IT.

NOW I SEE THE BOARD DRAWN ACROSS THE WINDOW.

AND I GO BY TO SEE DIFFERENT HANDWRITINGS.

I SEE PEOPLE RESPONDING TO EACH OTHER.

IN LITTLE JOKES.

SEE MOTIVATION AND THEIR LITTLE STORIES ON IT.

AND IT'S LIKE REALLY EMPOWERING TO SEE THAT I CREATED SOMETHING JUSTICE ONLY YOU KNOW WHO THESE PEOPLE ARE.

BUT I KNOW THAT I'M TOUCHING SOME PEOPLE.

EVEN IF THIS IS FIVE DIFFERENT PEOPLE INTERPRET HANDWRITINGS.

IT WAS REALLY EYE-OPENING THAT JUST THIS IDEA PROBABLY HELPED MORE PEOPLE BECAUSE NOW THEY'RE WALKING BY CINDY'S POSITIVE THINGS ENCOURAGED TO WRITE SOMETHING FOR THEMSELVES.

[APPLAUSE] >> YOU ANYTHING ON THAT?

>> EXAMPLES AROUND THAT?

>> I WOULD JUST SAY FROM BEING A STUDENT.

STARTING OFF MY FRESHMAN YEAR TO NOW, I CAN SAY IT'S BEEN TREMENDOUSLY A BIG DRASTIC CHANGE.

AS FAR AS STAFF €" €" SORRY TO SENSE OFFICE, BUT CEDAR VALLEY HAS THE BEST.

THEY ARE VERY LOVING AND GENUINE AND IT'S CRAZY BECAUSE BEING INTROVERTED NOW AND NOT EXTROVERTED PERSON JUSTICE OF ALWAYS BEEN EXTROVERTED.

I JUST NEVER NOTICED.

AND TO HAVE THE RESOURCES AND BEING JUST GENUINE IS WAS A BLESSING TO ME.

I WAS LIKE IT'S GOOD.

OKAY? I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT I'M THANKFUL BECAUSE LIKE I SAID, CEDAR VALLEY, THE IT HAS BEEN A TREMENDOUS CHANGE FOR ME THROUGHOUT MY WHOLE LIFE AND I AM JUST LIKE?

>> I THINK THE QUESTION WAS USED TO EXAMPLES OF JUSTICE SHOULD BE OF HER HEAD AND EXAMPLES OF JUSTICE MENTOR TO SOMEONE ELSE?

>> EMOTIONALLY WELL JUSTICE EMOTIONAL SUPPORT? IF YOU HAVE THOSE EXAMPLES?

>> AND FOR MANY STUDENTS TO SAILOR PEOPLE DON'T.

>> THAT'S WHAT I WAS SAYING.

FILL A DON'T PRAY LIKE WHEN YOU SAID URGENCY AND HAVING TO DO A LOT OF THINGS TO ASSIST IF YOU LOOK FROM A CLOSE EXAMPLE WOULD BE LIKE MY MOM.

SHE WAS ALWAYS DOING LIKE 100 THINGS AT A TIME.

LIKE SHE WAS A SUPERHERO.

SHE HAD THREE KIDS €" JUST A JOB.

HER HUSBAND.

AND LIKE JUST CHURCH LIFE AND SOCIAL LIFE.

AND I NEVER REALLY SAW HER OPEN UP AND TALK ABOUT THOSE EXPERIENCES UNTIL JUST LIKE RECENTLY.

LIKE SHE STARTED GOING TO THERAPY.

I WAS THE THAT LIKE YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO HAVE A LOT OF THINGS GOING ON.

THAT YOU WERE DISPERSED TO KEEP IT IN.

I DON'T REALLY KNOW HOW TO CONTINUE ON THAT.

BUT YES.

>> THINK.

>> SO, MOVING FORWARD.

WITH THAT, AND THANK YOU ALL FOR SHARING IN YOUR TRANSPARENCY.

WITH THIS AUDIENCE HERE.

YOU GOT A QUESTION? YES, PLEASE.

>> MY NAME IS JUSTICE IN THE SUN.

>> MY NAME IS CONSUELO AND AUNTIE.

I AM THE COORDINATIONS DIRECTOR IN CEDAR VALLEY.

AND MOUNTAIN VIEW.

MY OFFICE IS IN CEDAR VALLEY.

I'VE SEEN ALL THESE STUDENTS INTERACTED WITH THEM.

AND I WANT TO SAY SERIOUS, SHE CAME TO AN EVENT AND THEN EMAILED ME AND CAME TO MY OFFICE AND GAVE GREAT FEEDBACK AND PERSPECTIVE THAT IS NEEDED.

[02:25:04]

IN TERMS OF WHERE THE STUDENTS NEED FOR PROGRAMMING.

WITH THE STUDENTS NEED IN TERMS OF STUDENTS AND WHAT THEY NEED IN TERMS OF BEING ABLE TO REACH THEM AND FOR THEM TO KNOW.

SO, I KNOW YOU KNOW THAT WE TEND TO BE HARD ON OURSELVES, BUT YOU'VE DONE AN AMAZING JOB.

YOU ARE AWESOME AND GREAT AT WHAT YOU'RE DOING.

AS A NOTE WHEREVER YOU GO €" €" AFTER CEDAR VALLEY COMMITTEE WILL CONTINUE TO BE GREAT AND I KNOW YOU WILL COME TO MY OFFICE AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER.

THAT SCHOOL AS WELL.

AND €" €" I KNOW I'VE SEEN YOU AROUND AND BUILDING A AND YOU ARE DOING AN AWESOME JOB IN STUDENT LIFE.

AND THEY REALLY HELP ME, BECAUSE I'M NEW TO THE COUNT TO SYSTEM.

IN TERMS OF DATA KNOW WHAT I'M DOING.

AND IT SOMEHOW.

CAN YOU SHOW ME AND DIRECT ME? SO, WE HAVE A REALLY GOOD STUDENT POPULATION.

ON OUR SIDE, WITH THE DO BETTER JOB OF BEING OPENED AND ENGAGING WITH THE STUDENTS.

AND TREATING THEM AS OUR CLIENT.

OR ARE PERSON TO BE LIKE WHAT MAKES SENSE FOR THEM? HOW THEY GO ABOUT THEIR DAY? I WILL BETTER INTERACT WITH THEM? HOW WILL NATURAL THESE RESOURCES THAT WE HAVE, THEY ARE AWARE OF AND HAVE ACCESS TO? Y'ALL ARE MISSING.

ANOTHER OTHER THINGS THAT ARE GOING ON AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO TRY TO OFFER THAT RESOURCE AND SUPPORT.

AND MAKE IT OVER TO YOU GUYS SO THAT Y'ALL CAN KNOW WHERE TO CLAIM FROM.

[APPLAUSE] >> THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING FOR THE MADE ME THINK ABOUT SOMETHING WE TALKED ABOUT EARLIER.

THE WILLINGNESS AND CONSISTENCY.

AND IT KIND OF REALLY JUST SPOKE TO THAT.

WILLINGNESS TO SHOW UP AND BE THERE AND ENGAGE IN MAKING SURE THAT WE ARE CONSISTENT IN DOING THAT.

NEXT I WANT TO ADD TO.

AND THANK YOU FOR SHARING ABOUT WHAT THEY CALL THE HOW CONCEPT.

A TO W.

THEY HAVE TO BE HONEST.

AN OPEN AND WILLING TO CHANGE.

SO, OUR DEPARTMENT IN OFFICE AND THE CANCELING OF PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES ON ALL THE SEVEN CAMPUSES AND OFFICE SUITES HAVE TO BE IDENTIFIED BY NAME.

SO PEOPLE KNOW WHERE THEY ARE GOING TO.

AND WITH THE ROOM NUMBER IS AND STUFF LIKE THAT.

ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE CANCELING SUITE, AS IS COUNSELING.

AND SO, TO COURAGEOUS STEP FOR SOMEONE TO COME INTO THE OFFICE SUITE AND SAY I NEED HELP.

SO, I APPLAUD ALL OF OUR STUDENTS, WHO MAKE THAT COURAGEOUS STEP.

THERE IS NO SHAME IN THE GAME.

AT THE MAKE THE COURAGEOUS STEP TO COME FORWARD AND SAY I NEED HELP.

AND SO, THAT'S WHAT WE ARE ABOUT THE BUSINESS OF.

WE DESTIGMATIZE COUNSELING.

WE DESTIGMATIZE MENTAL HEALTH AND THE FACT THAT THERE IS NO SHAME IN YOUR GAME TO GET SOME HELP AND REACH OUT SOMEBODY.

AND IT'S FREE.

SOME ON SOMEBODY.

, SOMEBODY.

YOU KNOW MUCH IT COST IN THEIR IN THE REAL WORLD? $200 AN HOUR? OKAY, WE'RE OFFERING A FREE SERVICE AND SO MANY OTHER FREE SERVICES AT OUR COLLEGE.

THE PEOPLE NEED TO ACCESS.

COME ON DOWN AND GET RESULTS IN COUNSELING AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES IF YOU WILL.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

[APPLAUSE] >> THANK YOU FOR SHARING THAT.

VERY VERY IMPORTANT.

VERY, VERY IMPORTANT.

SO, MY NEXT QUESTION IS THIS.

I WANT TO TALK MORE SELF-CARE PRACTICES.

AS WE SHARED EARLIER.

WE ALL NEED TO REALLY DIVE DEEP INTO THAT SELF-CARE.

BUT YOU AS WELL AS STUDENTS.

IT'S A NECESSITY AS WELL.

SO, WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR CURRENT, IF YOU HAVE ANY PRACTICES PRACTICES FOR SELF-CARE, WOODEN CURRENTLY DOING THINK ABOUT IT FOR A MINUTE.

IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANY THAT, THAT'S FINE AS WELL.

BUT IF YOU DO HAVE SOME, WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR IT AS WELL.

>> I HAVE THREE.

THE FIRST ONE, I WAS ALWAYS LIKE, IF I GET SO FRUSTRATED, BECAUSE OVER THINKER.

SO I WAS OVER THINK EVERYTHING.

SO, WHAT I NORMALLY DO AS I SIT INSIDE AND I GO INSIDE EVERY EMOTION THAT COMES TO ME.

OR WOULD WRONG THINKING.

IF IT COMES TO CRYING, I CRIED.

IT'S NOT WHATEVER.

I PUT THE CRAZIEST SIGN I COULD EVER HAVE ON MY PLAYLIST AND LEADED GLASS.

AND UNLIKE YOU GO GIRL.

THE SECOND THING WOULD BE I WAS USED TO PLAY SIT IN THE BACK BATHTUB AND SIT THERE AND MEDITATE.

AND I WOULD ALWAYS LAUGH AT MEDITATION.

NOW UNLIKE I'M CRAZY.

BUT ACTUALLY LOOKED INTO IT AND RESEARCHED IT AND ACTUALLY MEDITATE AND I JUST LOVE IT LINGER.

THE THIRD THING I WOULD JUST SAY IS I WAS JUST TRY TO OUT OF THE NORM, FIND SOMETHING DIFFERENT.

I WOULD ASK PEOPLE LIKE WHAT YOU ALL DO.

HAVE YOU ACCOMMODATE YOUR SELF AS FAR AS BEING IN OVER THINKER OR WHATEVER YOU'RE GOING THROUGH? HOW DO YOU HANDLE THAT AND WHATEVER THAT IS.

I TRY TO ADJUST TO IT AND IF I DON'T LIKE IT, I FIND SOMETHING ELSE.

>> THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

[02:30:02]

I APPRECIATE THAT.

>> IS BEEN A SAILOR, WHICH REALLY €" €" COPELAND?

>> SOMETHING YOU UTILIZE FOR YOURSELF.

PRACTICES.

WHAT YOU DO.

>> I WOULD SAY NUMBER ONE THIS IS PROBABLY LIKE A SHOWER A LOT.

[LAUGHTER] HEY, THAT'S WHERE I FEEL LIKE FOR LIKE THIS WERE MOST OF MY DEEP THOUGHTS,.

AND THEN SECOND, I WITH A LITTLE WIENER DOG OR DACHSHUND.

I THINK AMONG ALL THE WALKS.

HE'S A FUNNY LITTLE DUDE.

[LAUGHTER] AND THEN PROBABLY GO FISHING WITH MY DAD.

AT ABOUT THREE AND HE WILL TALK ABOUT HIS WEEK AT WORK.

MOST OF HIS EXPERIENCES COME FROM GOING OUT TO LUNCH WITH HIS COWORKERS AND STUFF.

I TOOK ABOUT MY WEEK IN SCHOOL.

I WORK-STUDY, MY ASSISTANT LIFE.

INSTEAD WE JUST TALK.

>> IT'S AN AWESOME CONVERSATION.

>> IT'S BEAUTIFUL.

AGAIN, THANK YOU.

SO, SHIFTING GEARS ONE MORE TIME.

LET'S TALK SOCIAL MEDIA.

BECAUSE THAT'S A HUGE HUGE THING AS WE ALL KNOW.

WE ALL HAVE FOR THE MOST PART.

I BELIEVE EVERYBODY IN THIS ROOM HAS SOME LEVEL OF SOCIAL MEDIA.

BEFORE YOUR GENERATION, IS VERY PREVALENT.

BUT IT ALSO CAUSES A LOT OF ISSUES.

HAVE YOU FOUND YOURSELF ALMOST SUCCUMBING TO SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE COMPARISON TRAP OR HAS IT EVER BROUGHT YOU ANY ANXIETY.

HER WORDS ARE STRESSORS.

BECAUSE IT'S SO MUCH AT ONE TIME AND SO MUCH BEING PUSHED AT YOU.

THE TIMELINE DOES NOT END.

CONTROL UNTIL YOUR FINGER FALLS OFF.

BUT IT DOESN'T END.

SO, DO YOU FEEL ANY PRESSURE FROM SOCIAL MEDIA OR HAS IT CAUSED ANY EMOTIONAL OR MENTAL ISSUES FOR YOU? HOW ARE YOU UTILIZING IT?

>> WELL, ONE PERMITS WHAT SHE SAID, COPING.

I WOULD SAY THE BETTER THE SOCIAL MEDIA FOUR.

BUT IS THAT A HEALTHY COPING MECHANISM.

I SCROLL SO I FEEL BETTER POINT WITH SOCIAL MEDIA HAS A LOT OF INFORMATION ALL THE TIME.

WHETHER IT'S POSITIVE NEWS OR BAD NEWS OR AWARENESS.

AND SOMETIMES THAT IS A LOT OF OVERWHELMING TEST TEST TO SEE DIFFERENT STATES OF THE WORLD WORK THAT SITES THAT ARE JUST COMING UP RIGHT NOW.

LIKE REAL LIFE ISSUES.

LET'S SAY STIGMATIZATION OF DIFFERENT MENTAL ILLNESSES, RIGHT? IN SEEN PEOPLE IN THE COMMENTS DISPATCHING THOSE.

AFTER THE VIDEO TRYING TO GIVE LIGHT AND THIS IS REAL.

PEOPLE WANT TO COME AND SAY USE BEING A BABY, YOU KNOW? SEEING THAT.

WHICH ONE WOULD I BELIEVE? WHEN I SEE ALL THESE COMMENTS BEING NEGATIVE TO POSITIVE VIDEO.

WHAT IF ONE PERSON IS VENTING AND NOBODY ELSE IS IN REALITY.

JUST SEEING THAT CONSTANT BATTLE AN ARGUMENT BETWEEN DIFFERENT ISSUES.

COULD BE VERY STRESSFUL TO SEE WERE I LIVE AND WORK WHAT I SHOULD BELIEVE HOW I CAN IGNORE THE OTHER SIDE THAT I KNOW IS WRONG.

>> THAT'S GOOD, THANK YOU.

>> I WOULD JUST SAY THAT I WAS JUST LOOKING SOCIAL MEDIA AS AN ESCAPE MECHANISM.

LIKE I SAID, I WAS AN INTROVERT.

SO, I CHOSE TO GO TO SOCIAL MEDIA TO SEE THE POSITIVE SIDE OF IT.

AND IT HAS BEEN SOME NEGATIVES.

BUT OVERALL, I WOULD JUST SAY THAT ONE OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA NOW I'M GLAD THAT THEY HAVE LIKE BLOCKERS WE CAN BLOCK CERTAIN THINGS.

I WILL BLOCK TEST IS MY BLOCK LIST IS SO LONG.

SERIOUSLY.

[LAUGHTER] I WAS FOUND POSITIVE OUTLOOKS TO THAT.

OTHER THAN JUST BLOCKING, I WOULD ALWAYS JUST €" €" I HAVE THREE LITTLE RULES IN MARBLEHEAD.

IF IT DOESN'T HELP ME OR IT'S NOT GONNA KILL ME €" €" THEN WHY MY WATCHING THIS VIDEO OR WHY MIGHT EVEN INTERACTING WITH THIS? I JUST GO AHEAD AND SHUT THEM WITH SOCIAL MEDIA.

I ONLY WANT TO BOTHER WITH.

>> I WILL SAY LIKE HE WAS TALKING ABOUT THE COMPARISON THING.

IF YOU LOOK WITH TICK-TOCK LIKE THAT.

THE PICKUP YOUR INTERESTS.

IF YOU LIKE CARS THIS DISTINGUISHES MUCH OF COURSE.

SO, YOU COULD HAVE PEOPLE IN YOUR AGE GROUP.

JUST SEE THEM.

DRIVING HELLCATS LIVING A SUCCESSFUL LIFE IF YOU THINK THEY ARE.

IN THE BE LIKE BIOMONITORING A NICE CAR? WHY MINA THIS DESPINA? DO IN THE THAT, IF LOOK FROM THE OUTSIDE.

AFTER LOOKING JUST RECENTLY, SELF HATE, I'M ONLY 18.

NOAM SIGN?

[02:35:02]

YOU JUST HAVE TO REALIZE THE YOU GET PEOPLE TO FEEL OR DO BENNETT BETTER THAN YOU DO AND WORSE.

AND THEN THERE'S YOU.

SO.

>> 12.

12, THANK YOU.

>> I WOULD ADD THAT I'VE HEARD ABOUT THE ISSUE ON SOCIAL MEDIA ABOUT REGARDING CYBER BULLYING.

THAT'S A REAL PROBLEM FOR A LOT OF OUR PEOPLE AND YOUNGER PEOPLE IN PARTICULAR.

USED TO BE THE GOT BULLET IN THE BACKYARD WITH THE SCHOOLYARD WHATEVER.

ANNOUNCE ON SOCIAL MEDIA.

BECAUSE NOT EVEN 10-YEAR-OLDS HAVE A CELL PHONE.

AND SO, THEY ARE ABLE TO ACCESS ALL SORTS OF STUFF.

STUFF MIGHT HAVE BEEN AT THE SCHOOLYARD AND IT CARRIES A REAL SOCIAL MEDIA.

WE HAVE TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT WHAT WE POST STUFF THAT WE LOOK AT.

AND ALL THAT BECAUSE IT CAN BE TOXIC.

CAN BE VERY NEGATIVE.

YES.

>> I DEFINITELY AGREE WITH THAT I HAD TO GET TO A POINT BECAUSE I WAS ON THE COMPARISON KINDLY TRAP.

I GUESS YOU COULD SAY.

ESPECIALLY AT MY PROFESSION YEARS AGO WHEN I FIRST STARTED.

WAS THAT THIS PERSON IS HERE, PERSON IS DOING THIS.

AND HE REALIZED THAT IT WAS CONSTANTLY MAKING ME LIKE INCHES PER FEELING LESS THAN AND NOT WORTHY AND I HAD TO PULL BACK LIKE THIS IS NOT REALITY.

YOU CAN POST WHATEVER YOU WANT ON HERE.

AND [LAUGHTER] TO BE ON THIS WHEN I WAS JUST €" I WAS A PERSONAL TRAINER.

FOR QUITE SOME YEARS.

I WANT BUNCH OF AWARDS, I TRAVELED WORLD WITH SOME COMPANY.

STILL OF THE COMPANY, BUT REMEMBER MEETING A LOT OF THE INFLUENCER PEOPLE WITH THE MILLION FOLLOWERS AND THINGS LIKE THAT AND WHO THEY ARE AND SOCIAL MEDIA IS NOT WHO THEY ARE IN REAL LIFE.

ME TO SAY THAT.

AND IT JUST MADE ME REALIZE THAT THAT'S THE REALITY.

THIS IS THE THING THAT YOUR POSTING, THIS IS NOT REALITY.

SO, AS IT WILL SEPARATE MYSELF FROM THE TOOL CAN SEE IT IS JUST IT'S A TOOL.

NEITHER GOOD OR BAD.

IT'S REALLY JUST A RESOURCE.

IT'S A RESOURCE, BUT WE STARTED TO USE FOR NEGATIVE THINGS.

AND A LOT OF STUDENTS A LOT OF STUDENTS AND YOUNGER PEOPLE €" €" THEY FALL VICTIM TO THAT.

AND IT BECOMES THEIR EVERYTHING.

YOU KNOW? A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT ARE ON THEIR WHO WERE SUPER EXTROVERTED, BUT IN REALITY THEY ARE REALLY INTROVERTED.

THEY CREATE A WHOLE DIFFERENT PERSONA.

I THINK THAT'S A REALLY REALLY IMPORTANT CONVERSATION TO HAVE ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA AND WILD THING ABOUT THE, NOT ON THE TOPIC OF SOCIAL MEDIA, BUT MORE ON THE GLOBAL THIS IS ONLY GO DEEP IN THE POLITICS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

BUT, I KNOW.

[LAUGHTER] WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS CONCEPT OF HOPE.

BECAUSE THE FUTURE IS YOURS.

IT'S OURS.

AS BEING YOUNG.

DO YOU HAVE HOPE FOR A BETTER FUTURE? AND IS PRETTY BROAD QUESTION, BUT THEY DID NOT WANT TO BOIL IT DOWN TO JUST POLITICAL THINK SOMETHING LIKE THAT.. BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN CHANGE IN POLITICAL ISSUES AND FINANCIAL ISSUES.

YOU LOOK UP AND JUST FEEL HOPELESS AT TIMES? OR YOU JUST FEEL IT OKAY, I CAN DO SOMETHING TO MAKE SURE THAT THE FUTURE IS ACTUALLY BETTER FOR MYSELF.

YOU FEEL POWERLESS?

>> I DO HAVE HOPE FOR THE FUTURE.

ESPECIALLY WITHOUT COMING GENERATION.

KINZIE.

ALMOST LIKE TO START OR AT LEAST AT THAT BRIDGE POINT, BETWEEN BUT TO MAKE THE CHANGE.

HE STIGMATIZING ANYTHING AND NORMALIZING BEING OPEN-MINDED.

LISTEN TO EACH OTHER AND SAYING €" THAT IT'S A REALLY GOOD RIGHT NOW AND I CAN SEE A LOT OF GROWTH AND OPENNESS THEN THERE IS NOW.

IS ANOTHER ARSON DOOR SIDES OF THE INTERNET.

BUT ALSO ON THE OTHER SIDE, I SEE PEOPLE MY AGE WERE LITTLE BIT OLDER SHARING THE SAME VALUES THAT I HAVE.

AND SAME VALUES THAT I KNOW A LOT OF YOU HAVE HERE.

ESPECIALLY ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS AND EVEN OTHER POLITICAL TOPICS THAT ARE LIKE GOING TO, BUT I CAN SEE IS OVER OPEN CONVERSATION EASIER TO MAKE.

WE HAVE THIS RIGHT NOW TALKING ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH.

IF YOU LIKE IT'S A LARGE STEP.

AND NOW IF I WERE TO TALK TO SOMEONE MAYBE MY ANSWER SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

THEY WOULD NOT SEE IT THE SAME WAY.

THEY WOULD SEE IT IS NO, THIS IS PERSONAL STUFF.

WE'LL TALK ABOUT PERSONAL STUFF FOR THIS IS WHAT YOU KEEP WITH YOU AND EVEN WITH THE FAMILY.

YOU DON'T WANT PUBLIC START TALKING ABOUT WHAT YOU GOING THROUGH.

BECAUSE IT'S A PRIVATE MATTER.

YOU KNOW? PHILIP RIGHT NOW, I DO HAVE HOPE FOR THE FUTURE TO ANSWER THE QUESTION.

>> RIGHT.

>> I'LL BE HONEST BECAUSE OF VERY TRANSPARENT.

AT FIRST, I WAS VERY SCARED FOR MY FUTURE.

AS LIKE OUTCOME OF THIS GENERATION SCARE ME.

BUT, NOW, THERE ARE PROS TWO.

[02:40:03]

THE GENERATION BEHIND ME, I LOVE THEM, I LOOK THEY ARE VERY UPFRONT AND THEY SPEAK €" €" LIKE I NOTICED MY GENERATION AND A LITTLE BIT OLDER €" THIS WE ARE MORE SELF-CENTERED.

SO, INSTEAD OF SPEAKING OUT, WE GO TO EACH OTHER AMONGST EACH OTHER.

I LOOK AT THE OLDER GENERATION IS BEHIND MEAN THAT THAT YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT WHO SAID WHAT.

THEY'RE GONNA DO IT IN THEIR GONNA TAKE ACTION.

HELLO THAT'S WHAT BRINGS HOPE TO ME BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE A LOT OF TIMES WE DON'T TAKE ACTION, BUT WE JUST SPEAK.

I LOVE THAT THAT GENERATION, THE TAKE ACTION.

THEY ARE NOT AFRAID.

AND THEY ARE FEELERS.

I LIKE THAT.

>> IF YOU LIKE I DO GOT HOPE FOR THE THIS IS A BETTER FUTURE.

JUST FROM THE AMOUNT OF RESOURCES THAT I'VE BEEN GIVEN, THAT WE HAVE NOW.

I DON'T REALLY KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN IT.

BUT I JUST FEEL LIKE YOU CAN DO AS MUCH AS YOU WANT TO, RIGHT? I DON'T WANT TO GO TOO DEEP INTO THAT, BUT JUST LIKE.

>> SO, LAST QUESTION.

MORE SO IN CLOSING.

ON ASK YOU THIS.

WANT TO ASK YOU TO SHARE WITH THIS ROOM, WITH THIS AUDIENCE.

WHAT DO YOU WANT US TO KNOW OR WHAT YOU WANT US TO FOCUS ON AS IT PERTAINS TO MENTAL HEALTH, MENTAL HEALTH FOR YOUR GENERATION? WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU FEEL LIKE YOU MIGHT BE OVERLOOKING, IF NOT OVERLOOKING, WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO PUT MORE EMPHASIS ON? AND I'LL GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE TO SAY YOU CAN €" €" FOR MY GENERATION, IT WAS SIMPLY JUST HAVING THE CONVERSATION AND IN THE HOUSEHOLD.

IT WAS A BIG ONE FOR ME.

LET'S NORMALIZE THE CONVERSATION.

AND THEN WE CAN NORMALIZE THE HELP IN THERAPEUTIC TREATMENT.

LET'S SOMEBODY TALK.

BECAUSE WE WOULD BE SITTING HERE NOBODY'S QUIET AND I NEED TO KNOW SOMETHING.

NOW IS REALLY IMPORTANT.

SO, NOT FOR ME, IT WAS A BIG FOCAL POINT FOR ME.

I HAVE A MISSION TO CHANGE WHAT WE NORMALIZE.

THAT IS MY ENTIRE BRAND AND MISSION.

IT'S THE CHANGE NORMALIZING AND HAVING THIS CONVERSATION SUN NOSE NORMAL.

SO, EACH OF YOU €" €" I WANT YOU TO SHARE WITH ALL OF US.

BECAUSE WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO HELP.

I'M BIG ON LISTENING.

AND HOW CAN WE HELP.

SO €" €".

>> FROM THE STUDENT PERSPECTIVE, AT LEAST FROM KIDS IN MY SCHOOL AND MY FRIENDS €" €" THE GUITAR TO SPEAK OUT.

THEY ARE SCARED OF WHAT THE REACTIONS CAN BE FROM HILLARY SPEAK OUT TOO.

YOU DON'T KNOW IF THEY'RE GONNA DISMISS IT LIKE WE ARE USED TO IT.

WHATEVER WE SAY BEING DISMISSED.

IT'S KIND OF HARD TO COME ABOUT THE TRUST AGAIN WITH SOMEBODY OLDER.

THE EXPERIENCE AFTER BEING DISMISSED FOR SO LONG.

IN A? 90 BEING HEARD IS NEVER NEVER GUARANTEED.

SO, HOW IT'S RESEARCHED AROUND ME, BUT I CAN NEVER DISCUSS MAYBE I'M DOWNPLAYING.

MAYBE SOME BIG IN MY HEAD AND THEY WILL BE WITH THAT AND I WILL GET HELP BECAUSE WE BOTH SEE THE TOPIC WHEN ACTUALLY IS PRETTY SO I THINK IT'S REALLY HARD TO HAVE THAT TRUST.

AND THEY SAID ABOUT CONSISTENCY.

I KNOW OF MY HIGH SCHOOL, A LOT OF TEACHERS AND STAFF AND PEOPLE COULD COME AND GO.

WITH MY CLASS OF 2022.

EVERYBODY IS UNEASY WITH SOMEBODY COMES IN.

WE DON'T KNOW IF WE SHOULD CONFRONT THAT PERSON BECAUSE THEY MIGHT JUST LEAVE AGAIN AND WE DON'T REALLY HAVE THAT SAFE SPACE.

AGAIN.

SO, I JUST TRY TO MAKE A LOT MORE APPROACHABLE AND MAKE IT BE KNOWN THAT OUR VOICES CAN BE HEARD AND NOT DISMISSED UNDER THE RUG.

JUST HAVE AN OPEN MIND AND OPEN DOORS.

EVEN IF PEOPLE ARE HESITANT TO WALK IN.

>> ARE, THANK YOU.

>> I LIKED I'M GONNA TAKE THAT WHAT YOU SAID EARLIER.

I ALWAYS LOOK AT THAT.

I'M VERY OBSERVANT.

SO I WOULD JUST SAY MAKE IT A SAFE ZONE FOR US AS INDIVIDUALS.

YOU NEVER KNOW >> SPECIAL TO ENGAGE WITH ME.

>> IS ABLE TO TRUST THEM.

[02:45:18]

I TEACHERS ALL THROUGHOUT MY LIFE.

I DON'T REMEMBER HALF OF THEM.

BUT THE ONES WHO MADE ME FEEL SEEN AND HEARD I REMEMBER THEM.

SO, BUILD THOSE RELATIONSHIPS AND THANK YOU TO OUR AMAZING PAMPERED THANK YOU TO PAMELA FOX.

AND THAT'S CAN CONCLUDE THE Q&A FOR TODAY.

>> WE GOT A GIFT YOKE.

[APPLAUSE] >> DON'T GO ANYWHERE.

I WANT TO TAKE A PICTURE.

[APPLAUSE] >> THEY GO.

THANKS GUYS.

>> IT'S DANGEROUS.

€" €" [INDISCERNIBLE] >> YOU CAN DO THE THANK YOUSE TO.

>> YES, GO AHEAD.

[LAUGHTER] >> WE'RE GONNA TAKE A GROUP PICTURES IN JUST A MINUTE, BUT AT THIS TIME WE WANT TO GIVE A SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR DALLAS COLLEGE LEADERSHIP.
