MADAM CHAIRMAN, I WAS HERE LAST MONTH AS A FACULTY MEMBER.
TODAY, I APPEAR BEFORE YOU YOU AS A TAX PAYING CITIZEN OF DALLAS COUNTY, URGING YOU TO VOTE NO ON ANY CHANGES TO EXISTING BOARD POLICY REGARDING THE FACULTY'S ROLLING THREE-YEAR CONTRACT.
I'M HERE IN RESPONSE TO THE BOARD'S SPECIAL MEETING OF DECEMBER 2ND, WHERE THE UPCOMING CHANGES OF FACULTY ROLLING THREE-YEAR CONTRACT WAS DISCUSSED.
I OBSERVED THE DISCUSSION WITH GREAT CONSTER NATION.
I WAS DISGUSTED TO WITNESS THE VILE, BULLYING BEHAVIOR OF ONE PARTICULAR BOARD MEMBER TOWARDS ANYONE ON THE BOARD OR
[00:05:02]
IN THE ROOM WHO DISAGREED WITH HER.THE DISRESPECT SHE DEMONSTRATED FORWARD THE FACULTY OF DALLAS COLLEGE, WHO ARE THE ONLY MEMBERS OF THIS INSTITUTION WHO ARE ACTUALLY TEACHING STUDENTS.
IT SHOULD ALSO BE NOTED THAT AT THAT DECEMBER 2ND BOARD MEETING, LEGAL COUNSEL STATED THERE WERE 32 FULL-TIME FACULTY MEMBERS AT DALLAS COLLEGE.
WHEN THERE'S EVIDENCE THAT THERE ARE LESS THAN 850 FULL-TIME FACULTY.
THIS EVIDENCE WAS OBTAINED FROM A PUBLIC INFORMATION ACT REQUEST THAT THE COLLEGE'S LEGAL OFFICE RESPONDED TO.
IN M I HAVE WITNESSED BULLYING FIRSTHAND.
AND THE UGLY END RESULT IS YOUNG PEOPLE COMMITTING SUICIDE.
OTHERS HAVING NERVOUS BREAK DOWNS.
I'M CURRENTLY WITNESSING THE EXACT SAME END RESULT IN THE BULLYING OF FACULTY AND STAFF BY THE COLLEGE ADMINISTRATION, ITS FOOTMEN AND A PARTICULAR MEMBER OF THIS BOARD THROUGH INTIMIDATION, RETALIATION, RETRIBUTION, AND/OR TERMINATION.
AT T OF DECEMBER 2ND, IT APPEARED EVERY ONE OF YOU WAS ALLOWING ONE PARTICULAR MEMBER TO DICTATE AND CONTROL THE DESTINY OF NEARLY 2.6 MILLION CONSTITUENTS.
I HAVE HEARD A BOARD MUST SPEAK WITH ONE VOICE.
THAT IS FOOLISH AND ANTI-DEMOCRATIC.
DO NOT ABDICATE YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.
YOU MUST VOTE THE WILL OF YOUR CONSTITUENTS EVEN IF IT'S AGAINST THE MAJORITY VOTES OF YOUR BOARD COLLEAGUES.
WHAT CONVERSATION, COMMUNITY DIALOGUE AND NO MORE OF THIS BOARD MEMBER'S TOXIC HOSTILITY, WHICH MOVES NOWHERE SERVING STUDENTS AND CREATING COMMUNITY.
I EN TO FACULTY, REACH OUT TO THEM INTENTIONALLY, GET TO KNOW THEM AND YOUR STUDENTS AND ATTEMPT TO RECONCILE AND HEAL THIS BROKEN INSTITUTION.
WE A WE'RE ALL IN IT TOGETHER.
THE FACULTY WILL NO LONGER TOLERATE BULLYING OF ANY KIND, AND YOU AS A BOARD, SHOULD NEVER ALLOW ONE BOARD MEMBER TO DOMINATE DISCUSSIONS, IMPOSE THE BOARD MEMBER'S WILL, NOR SPEAK FOR YOU OR ILLEGITIMATELY REPRESENT THE VIEWS OF YOUR CONSTITUENTS.
I LE THAT I HEARD AND LEARNED IN MY YOUTH.
YOU CANNOT RUN AWAY FROM A PROBLEM.
YOU MUST SOMETIMES FIGHT IT OUT.
AND IF THAT BE SO, WHY NOT NOW AND WHERE YOU STAND? THANK YOU.
>> CHAIRWOMAN LIRA BRAVO: THANK YOU.
NO OTHER SPEAKERS, CORRECT? OKAY.
[5. Special Presentation: Sean Preston Nguyen - El Centro Campus Student, 2021 World Food Championship Winner]
ALL RIGHT THEN, WE WILL MOVE ONTO ITEM 5.WE WILL HAVE A PRESENTATION FROM EL CENTRO CAMPUS.
AND PRESIDENT BRAD WILLIAMS WILL ROW DO YOU SAY IT.
IT'S AN HONOR TO BE HERE TODAY AND EXCITING BECAUSE IT'S A TOPIC WE'RE ALL VERY FOND OF, WHICH IS FOOD, RIGHT? (LAUGHTER)
>> I'D LIKE TO RECOGNIZE THIS YEAR'S WINNER OF THE COMPETITION HERE IN DALLAS, THE WORLD FOOD CHAMPIONSHIP, THE MR. PRESTON NGUYEN.
PRESTON, IF YOU WOULD COME FORWARD ALONG WITH YOUR FATHER.
BUT THESE TWO GENTLEMEN AND PRESTON'S MOTHER EMMA WILL TRAVEL TO THE FINAL TABLE CHAMPIONSHIP IN SOUTH CAROLINA.
WE'RE LOOKING FOR WAYS DALLAS COLLEGE CAN CONTINUE TO SUPPORT HIM AND HIS COOKING TEAM, HIS CULINARY TEAM AS THEY TRAVEL TO THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS.
THE FACULTY ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT AT EL CENTRO AND BRIAN HAYES, JASMINE, THE BAKER AND CHEF.
WE HAVE FACULTY WITH US TODAY AS WELL.
IF YOU WOULD RECOGNIZE THEM FOR THEIR WORK.
>> LAST STEVE, THE SENIOR DIRECTOR OF WORK FORCE AND CAREER CONNECTED LEARNING REMINDED ME DALLAS COLLEGE IS THE OFFICIAL HIRE AND PARTNER FOR THE WORLD FOOD CHAMPIONSHIPS.
[00:10:01]
IT.AND WE WISH THIS FAMILY CONTINUED SUCCESS AS THEY COMPETE.
>> CHAIRWOMAN LIRA BRAVO: ARE WE DOING A PHOTO OP? (SPE MICROPHONE)
>> CHAIRWOMAN LIRA BRAVO: WE'RE GOING TO DO THEM ALL AT ONCE? OKAY.
>> CHANCELLOR MAY: DON'T GO FAR.
>> THERE'S A VIRUS GOING AROUND.
>> CHAIRWOMAN LIRA BRAVO: OKAY.
NOW I'D LIKE TO WELCOME RICHLAND PRESIDENT -- OH.
SO THE PICTURES FROM THE WORLD FOOD CHAMPIONSHIP ARE BEING SHOWN ABOVE US, BEHIND US.
IS THAT WHAT YOU'RE SAYING? OKAY.
>> TRUSTEE: WAS IT HERE IN DALLAS? (CHITCHAT)
>> CHAIRWOMAN LIRA BRAVO: IT WAS IN DALLAS? FAIR PARK.
[6. Special Presentation: Dallas College National Championships - Richland Campus Men's Soccer and Brookhaven Campus Women's Soccer]
BOARD CHAIR BRAVO, TRUSTEES, DR. MAY.I'M DELIGHTED TO BE HERE YET AGAIN TO CELEBRATE THE SUCCESS OF THE RICHLAND CAMPUS MEN'S SOCCER TEAM.
[00:15:04]
AS THEY WON THEIR FOURTH CONSECUTIVE NATIONAL JUNIOR COLLEGE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION DIVISION 3 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP DURING THE NATIONAL TOURNAMENT IN NEW YORK, NOVEMBER 11TH THROUGH 14TH.THIS APPEARANCE IN A NATIONAL TOURNAMENT MATCH AND 16TH NATIONAL TOURNAMENT APPEARANCE, CONCLUDING THE SEASON WITH A 17-0-1 RECORD.
>> ALL OF THESE EXCEPTIONAL YOUNG MEN WERE LED BY AN AMAZING COACH, RAUL HERRERA.
THE HE'S A HILLCREST -- RAUL, STEP OUT.
>> RAUL IS A HILLCREST HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE.
GREW UP IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD SO TO SPEAK.
HE PLAYED SOCCER FOR RICHLAND AS A STUDENT.
COMPLETED HIS ASSOCIATE DEGREE FROM NOW DALLAS COLLEGE.
HE ALSO WAS THE ASSISTANT COACH FOR SIX YEARS BEFORE HE BECAME OUR HEAD COACH.
SO WHILE HE PLAYED AT RICHLAND, HE WAS NAMED TWO-TIME ALL-AMERICAN AND HELPED WIN THE MJCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AS A STUDENT.
SO H OUR COMMUNITY AND IN THE SUCCESS OF OUR STUDENTS, AND HE IS A CHAMPIONSHIP COACH.
HE WAS NAMED THE COACH OF THE TOURNAMENT DURING THIS MOST RECENT NATIONAL TOURNAMENT.
AND I AM SO HONORED TO INTRODUCE HIM TO YOU, SO HE CAN SHARE WITH YOU THE SUCCESS OF THE TEAM THIS YEAR.
FIRST TIME I CAME HERE -- HOPEFULLY, I HAVE IMPROVED.
IT'S BEEN AWHILE BUT I'M HAPPY TO BE HERE FOR MANY ASPECTS.
WE'RE HAPPY TO BE HERE FOR A BIGGER ISSUE WORLDWIDE.
I'M HAPPY WE'RE SLOWLY BUT SURELY HOPEFULLY GETTING BACK TO NORMAL.
FIRS ANYTHING, I WANT TO INTRODUCE MY TEAM.
THERE'S A FEW GUYS THAT PLAYED IN THE SPRING WITH US THAT CAME HERE.
FIRST OF ALL, BYRON, RAISE YOUR HAND, GUYS.
>> I WANT TO GET THOSE NAMES OUT.
I'M VERY PROUD OF THE PROGRAM.
AS THE HEAD COACH AND ALUMNI AND ASSISTANT AND PLAYER, THERE'S A LOT OF JOY AND PRIDE IN THE SUCCESS WE'RE HAVING RIGHT NOW.
IT'S CRAZY TO THINK 11 MONTHS AGO, WE DIDN'T HAVE A SEASON.
AS A HEAD COACH AND COACH PERIOD, I NEVER FELT SO HELPLESS.
HAVING A LOT OF KIDS FROM AS CLOSE TO DALLAS TO AS FAR AS OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD TO COMMIT TO COME TO OUR SCHOOL AND PROGRAM TO TELL THEM WE DON'T HAVE A SEASON, AND I FELT HOPELESS.
I RE COMMITTING TO OUR PROGRAM AND STICKING IT OUT.
LIKE I TOLD THEM, TRY TO HAVE A GOOD ATTITUDE AND FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CONTROL.
DON'T BE VICTIMS. AND THESE GUYS FOR A FEW DAYS DIDN'T HAVE A SEASON AND IT WAS A LIMITED SEASON WHERE RECRUITING WAS LIMITED AND IT WAS FRUSTRATING AFTER A HISTORIC RUN THE YEAR BEFORE.
[00:20:01]
THEY STUCK IT OUT AND WE'RE GETTING THE FRUITS FROM THAT.LET EVERYBODY ELSE PRAISE YOU AND SUPPORT YOU.
FORTUNATELY, FOR WHATEVER REASON, WE HAVEN'T HAD A TIME TO PRAISE THEM AND BRAG.
FOR NOW, I FEEL WE SHOULD APPRECIATE THEM AND BRAG A LITTLE.
I WANT TO GIVE YOU A LITTLE WHAT THESE KIDS HAVE ACCOMPLISHED.
IT'S A THIRD STRAIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP -- FORTH STRAIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP BUT THREE STRAIGHT YEARS UNDEFEATED.
THE THREE YEARS WE WENT 46-0-2.
AND WE CURRENTLY HAVE 56-GAME WINNING STREAK.
LIKE C IN SPEECH AND A IN MATH SO I LIKE NUMBERS.
I'M GOING TO GIVE YOU A FEW MORE NUMBERS.
>> WE HAVEN'T LOST IN OVER THREE YEARS.
THAT'S 1,170 DAYS TO BE EXACT.
WE HAVEN'T LOST TO A DIVISION 3 SCHOOL THAT'S AT THE SAME LEVEL AS US IN OVER 4 YEARS.
THAT WAS A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2017.
AS COMPETITIVE AS I AM, IF WE WON THAT GAME, WE WOULD HAVE TALKED ABOUT SIXTH STRAIGHT.
WE T CHAMPIONSHIPS PROGRAM HISTORY WITH TEN.
WE TIED FOR THE MOST IN PROGRAM HISTORY.
WITH THE FIRST MEN'S OR WOMEN'S IN WIN FOUR IN A ROW.
WE'RE THE FIRST COLLEGE UNIVERSITY THAT I KNOW THAT WON TWO IN ONE YEAR.
WE TALK ABOUT TURNING NEGATIVE INTO POSITIVE BECAUSE OF COVID, THAT TURNED INTO A POSITIVE.
NOBODY ELSE I KNOW OF WON TWO CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THE SAME YEAR.
THAT'S AN ACCOMPLISHMENT ON ITS OWN.
ANOT WE HAVE FIVE GUYS THAT PLAYED FOR US THREE YEARS WON THREE CHAMPIONSHIPS BECAUSE IT'S A TWO-YEAR SCHOOL AND THEY HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WIN.
WE WON THE LAST RICHLAND NATI CHAMPIONSHIP.
ALL THE CHAMPIONSHIPS RICHLAND COLLEGE HAS WON, WE'RE THE LAST AND THE FIRST DALLAS COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIP.
>> OVERALL, THOSE NUMBERS ARE GREAT.
THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE PROUD.
MOST PROUD, THE GUYS ARE MOVING ON AND WE WOULD LIKE TO WIN ON THE FIELD BUT WE LOVE WINNING OFF THE FIELD.
CURRENTLY, WE HAVE 20 ALUMNI PLAYING OR COMMITTED TO UNIVERSITIES.
WE'VE GOT KIDS PLAYING ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, TULSA.
THEY WERE RANKED NUMBER TWO IN THE NATION AND MADE THE SWEET 16 RUN.
PLAYING TOP TEAMS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.
THAT'S ONE THING WE'RE VERY PROUD OF.
WE'RE WINNING CHAMPIONSHIPS AND WINNING OFF THE FIELD, THEIR EDUCATION AND GETTING THEIR EDUCATION PAID FOR AND IT STARTED WITH DALLAS COLLEGE.
I TREAT THEM LIKE A FOUR-YEAR UNIVERSITY LIKE THEY'RE ON FULL RIDES AND THEY'RE NOT.
A LOT OF THEM LEAVE FROM HOME AND BUDGET ON THEIR OWN AND HAD TO BRING HELP HOME AND PROVIDE FOR THEIR FAMILIES.
APPRECIATE YOU GUYS BEARING WITH ME AND TAKING ON MY HARD-NOSE LOVE THAT I GIVE YOU.
>> ALSO, I WANT TO THANK ALBERT RODRIGUEZ.
>> HE'S MY ASSISTANT AND ONE OF MY GOOD FRIENDS.
HE'S A SUNSET ALUM DALLAS ISD AND PLAYED WITH ME AT RICHMOND COLLEGE IN 2006.
WON A CHAMPIONSHIP WITH ME AS A PLAYER.
SCORED THREE GOALS IN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.
HELPED ME WIN AS ASSISTANT COACH AND THREE CHAMPIONSHIPS AS A HEAD COACH.
HE'S CURRENTLILY A TEACHER AT DALLAS ISD.
LORENZO AND (INDISCERNIBLE) MAYBE WE HAVE BETTER PLAYERS OR CAPTAINS, BUT I DON'T THINK WE HAVE BETTER THE COMBINATION.
IN TULSA, WILL BE THE FOURTH PLAYER PLAYING AT UNIVERSITY OF TULSA.
AND THE MVP OF THE TOURNAMENT COMMITTED TO (INDISCERNIBLE) UNIVERSITY.
THEY'LL BE TRANSFERRING THIS SPRING.
>> WE'LL BRING THEM ALL THE WAY AROUND.
[00:25:05]
(APPLAUSE) (CHITCHAT)>> CHAIRWOMAN LIRA BRAVO: NOW, NEXT WILL BE PRESIDENT LINDA.
BROOKHAVEN PRESIDENT, WOULD YOU LIKE TO INTRODUCE THEM AS THEY COME IN.
>> SO THANKS FORGIVING US A CHANCE TO RECOGNIZE OUR TEAM.
I WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU ALL NOTICE IT TOOK ALL THOS CHAMPIONSHIP.
SO WE CAN GIVE HIM CREDIT A LITTLE BIT.
SO I ELDER HAS BEEN HERE LONGER THAN I HAVE.
THE MY FIRST YEAR HE WON A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, RIGHT? SO IT WAS PRETTY EXCITING TO COME INTO THAT MY FIRST MONTH.
SO I COACH MENTIONED ABOUT THE STUDENTS GOING ON AND PLAYING AT UNIVERSITY.
THAT'S WHERE THE REST OF THE TEAM IS.
THEY'RE ALL VISITING, LIKE COLLEGE VISITS TO GO TO UNIVERSITIES, SO THAT'S WHY THEY COULDN'T BE HERE.
THE TIMING DIDN'T WORK OUT FOR THEM.
HOW MANY ARE ON YOUR TEAM, COACH?
I WANT TO SAY HOW MUCH I APPRECIATE YOU ALL CONTINUING TO SUPPORT ATHLETICS, BECAUSE THAT'S EVIDENCE THAT THEY ARE GOING ONTO UNIVERSITIES NOT JUST TO PLAY SOCCER BUT TO GET A BACHELORS DEGREE.
SO THEY OFTEN GET SCHOLARSHIPS, NOT JUST THE SOCCER TEAMS BUT ALL OF OUR TEAMS, BASEBALL AND OTHERS.
[00:30:01]
IMPORTANT PART OF ATHLETICS, RIGHT? THE COACHES TAKE CARE OF THE STUDENTS, RECRUIT THEM, BRING THEM IN, BUILD RELATIONSHIPS, SUPPORT THEM AND MAKE SURE THEY'RE GOING TO CLASS AND DOING THEIR WORK AND STAY ELIGIBLE TO PLAY.FOR ME, THAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT PART.
THOUGH, I DO LOVE TO WIN, TOO.
I WANT TO INTRODUCE COACH JIMMY ELDER AND LET HIM TALK ABOUT THE TEAM.
IT'S HARD TO FOLLOW THAT RICHLAND STUFF.
I HAVEN'T BEEN HERE LONG ENOUGH.
I COACHED SOCCER ALL MY LIFE, PLAYED PROFESSIONALLY, PLAYED COLLEGE.
COACHED MY KIDS AND CLUB AND WON A STAT CHAMPIONSHIP.
I'VE COACHED A LONG TIME AND COULD NEVER GET MY HANDS ON A COLLEGE JOB, BECAUSE EITHER THEY DIDN'T PAY WELL ENOUGH OR MY WIFE HAD NINE KIDS AND I COULDN'T WORK.
SO THE FIRST COLLEGE JOB I FELL INTO WAS THE BROOKHAVEN JOB, ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO.
I HAD ANOTHER JOB, WHICH I WAS DOING IT BECAUSE MY WIFE LET ME DO IT.
AND IT WAS MY FIRST CHANCE TO WORK WITH COLLEGE KIDS.
AT THE TIME BROOKHAVEN HAD NOT WON ANYTHING, NOT A CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT, NOTHING IN SOCCER.
AT T MY ASSISTANT COACH ROBERT WILLIAMS WITH YOU ME, NOT WITH US HERE TODAY AND ALBERT.
AND WE DECIDED TO DO WHAT WE DO BEST, GO FIND PLAYERS.
WE COMMUNICATED WITH COACHES ALL OVER THE TEXAS AREA, AND WE STARTED BRINGING IN PLAYERS FROM COLLEGE STATION, AUSTIN, HOUSTON, SAN ANTONIO.
MAJORITY OF OUR PLAYERS COME OUT OF THE DALLAS-FORT WORTH AREA.
WE PROMISED THEM WE WERE GOING TO BE A CHAMPION.
I DIDN'T HAVE ANYTHING TO SHOW THEM.
WE B OF WHICH WOULD NEVER HAD GONE TO WILL SKU.
THEIR PARENTS WERE LIKE JUST GO TO WORK, GO TO WORK.
WE BROUGHT THEM IN TO PLAY SOCCER, WHICH THEIR PARENTS LOVED.
THE MINUTE THESE KIDS GOT THEIR ASSOCIATES DEGREES, MANY OF THEM HAVE SINCE GOT THEIR FOUR-YEAR DEGREES, AND WE HAD TO GO TO BAT FOR THEM WITH THEM SOMETIMES AGAINST THE PARENTS WHEN WE GET THEM A FULL RIDE AT A FOUR-YEAR INSTITUTION TO GET THEIR DEGREE, WE HAD TO SAY YOU NEED TO GO BACK TO YOUR MOM AND DAD AND SAY THERE'S THIS WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY CLOSING PATH.
YOU HAVE ATHLETIC TALENT AND THEY'LL PAY FOR YOUR EDUCATION AND YOUR WHOLE LIFE WILL TURN, THEIR LIFE WILL TURN.
WE LOVE THESE KIDS AND LOOK FOR THE BEST TALENT IN THE AREA.
AND WE BRING THEM IN AND MEANTER THEM OFF AND ON THE FIELD.
IF YOUR GOING TO BE A GOOD SOCCER PLAYER, YOU HAVE TO BE A GOOD PERSON AND STUDENT.
IT JUST DOESN'T WORK OUT OTHERWISE.
SO R WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THEIR ACADEMICS AND STUDIES AND DISCIPLINE AND GETTING TO PRACTICE AND THEN WE PRACTICE THE HECK OUT OF THEM.
I'M TALKING 20-30 HOURS A WEEK, SOME 40 HOURS A WEEK.
WE SCHEDULE PRACTICE AT 6:30 IN THE MORNING BECAUSE THAT'S WHEN THEY WANTED IT, BECAUSE THAT WAY THEY CAN GO TO WORK AND DO THEIR SCHOOL AND SURVIVE.
I DIDN'T HAVE TO DO THAT AS A YOUNG SOCCER PLAYER, SO WHEN I LOOK AT THESE KIDS I'M TOTALLY AMAZED.
THEY COME TO PRACTICE AND HAVE TALENT AND GO TO THEIR WORKOUTS AND MAINTAIN THEIR GRADES.
THE LAST AVERAGE GPA FOR OUR TEAM HAS BEEN 3.2.
THESE GIRLS BACK HERE JUST HAPPEN TO BE THE ONLY ONES AVAILABLE.
THE MCKENZIE, WHAT DO YOU HAVE, 4.0? (APPLAUSE)
TORI JUST GOT AN EAGLE SCOUT BADGE LAST WEEK.
FIRST FEMALE IN GRAND PRAIRIE TO GET AN EAGLE SCOUT BADGE.
>> IT'S ALL ABOUT SOCCER TO US.
WE DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARING WE GET THEM ON CAMPUS.
WE KNOW THEY'RE TALENTED SOCCER PLAYERS AND WE TAKE OVER AND TRY TO GUIDE THEM.
THE BROOKHAVEN COLLEGE SOCCER TEAM THE LAST SIX SEASONS SINCE WE STARTED WORKING AND LOOKING FOR ATHLETES HAS WON THE LAST FIVE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THE DALLAS COLLEGE CONFERENCE.
WE'VE BEEN TO NATIONAL TOURNAMENT FIVE TIMES IN SIX YEARS.
[00:35:04]
WE FINISHED SECOND ONCE.AND WE FINISHED THIRD OUR FIRST YEAR THERE.
AND THE PROGRAM WE PUT TOGETHER.
WE GET -- RIGHT NOW, WE GET CALLS AND EMAILS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY FROM FOUR-YEAR SCHOOLS ASKING ABOUT OUR PLAYERS.
I KNOW THE MAJORITY OF YOU GUYS PROBABLY DON'T FOLLOW THE BIG SOCCER ASSOCIATIONS, BUT THERE'S A HUGE ONE IN THE UNITED STATES, WHERE THE NUMBER ONE RANKING FOR JUNIOR COLLEGE IS OFTEN THE TOP FIVE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
WE'RE BEING SEEN BY COLLEGES ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.
JCA, WE'RE TYPICALLY IN THE TOP FIVE.
THE FOUR-YEAR SCHOOLS ARE WATCHING BECAUSE THEY KNOW WHERE TO GET THEIR PLAYERS NOW.
WE'RE ABLE TO SEND THESE KIDS ON AND GET THEM A REALLY GOOD EDUCATION.
BUT AS THIS YEAR, WE WON IT AGAINST DELTA.
IT WAS THE NUMBER ONE RANKED TEAM.
THREE WEEKS AGO, IN THE SNOW, IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL DAY.
AND DELTA HAD BEATEN US IN JUNE.
THE OTHER THING I'M PROUD TO SAY IS EVERY STUDENT THAT HAS COME AND GOTTEN AN ASSOCIATION DEGREE AT -- I'M SORRY EVERY SOCCER STUDENT HAS GOT A RING TO GO WITH THEM ON, A CHAMPIONSHIP RING, A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP RING.
EVERY STUDENT THAT'S BEEN TWO YEARS.
IN JUNE, OUR FRESHMAN LOST IN THE FINAL.
THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN THE ONLY TEAM NOT TO GET A CHAMPIONSHIP RING HAD THEY NOT WON THIS GAME AGAINST NUMBER ONE DELTA THREE WEEKS AGO.
THAT HEAVY ON THEM BUT ALSO ON US.
SO DELTA WAS A MIGHTY FORCE, UNDEFEATED IN TWO YEARS.
WE SCORED TWO MINUTES LATER, TIED THE GAME.
WE SCORE WITH 20 MINUTES LEFT.
JUST TOTALLY ERUPTS ON THE SIDELINES.
PACKED IT BACK FOR 20 MINUTES.
IT WAS THE LONGEST 20 MINUTES OF MY CAREER TO WIN AGAINST A SUPER TEAM.
IT WAS PROBABLY THE MOST REWARDING CHAMPIONSHIP I'VE WON.
SO THAT'S, YOU KNOW, OUR STORY.
WE HAD T JOANNA RODRIGUEZ WHO WASN'T ABLE TO JOIN US.
WE HAD THE DEFENSIVE PLAYER, LILY SIMPSON.
WE HAD THRE ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM, AWESOME ON THEIR RESUMES.
OUT OF 11 FIRST TEAM SPOTS, BROOKHAVEN HAD FOUR.
MY F OF THE TOP THREE TEAMS IN THE COUNTRY.
WE DIDN'T MAKE THE RANKINGS OR ALL-AMERICANS, WE DIDN'T GET ANYTHING.
A LOT COMES BECAUSE THEIR PREDECESSORS WERE GOOD AND THEY'RE GETTING THE ACCOLADES.
WE HAD FIVE TOTAL AN ALL-AMERICAN TEAM.
WE'RE UP FOR MVP IN THE UNITED SOCCER COACHES, WHICH MEANS A FULL TRIP TO KANSAS CITY HERE IN A COUPLE OF FEW WEEKS.
A PRESENTATION IN FRONT OF ALL THEIR MENTORS AND PEERS.
I'M APPRECIATIVE WE HAVE THE SUPPORT HERE TO DO THAT.
BECAUSE I KNOW IT COSTS A LOT OF MONEY.
THE I TELL THESE GIRLS WHEN THEY COME IN, WE DON'T HAVE A SCHOLARSHIP TO GIVE YOU BUT I'M GIVING YOU A JERSEY, SWEATS, BUS RIDE.
AND I'M TAKING YOU TO NEW YORK FOR THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.
AND IF YOU DO WELL, YOU'RE GOING TO GET ONE OF THESE AND THESE LADIES AND GENTLEMEN ARE PRICELESS.
I DON'T KNOW WHEN A TEAM LAST WON THEIR TEXAS CHAMPIONSHIPS, TEXAS A & M, TEXAS TECH, I BET YOU SCHOOLS ON THAT LIST HAS NOT WON A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP LIST.
THESE DO NOT COME AROUND OFTEN.
THAT'S HOW WE RECRUIT PLAYERS AND TRY TO BACK IT UP AND DELIVER THIS TO THEM.
WE COULD NOT DO IT WITHOUT YOU GUYS.
I FORGOT THE YOUNG LADY THAT MADE THIS POSSIBLE, MISS JONES, SHE'S OUR NEW EXECUTIVE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR.
[00:40:01]
INTRODUCE HER.>> AND WITHOUT MISS JONES, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN REALLY CHALLENGING.
SHE WAS SUPER THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE PROCESS.
FIRST OFF, I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU TO COACH ELDER AND OUR STUDENT ATHLETES.
I'M BLESSED TO BE ABLE TO DO WHAT I DO AND TO BE ABLE TO WORK WITH GREAT COACHES, BUT ALSO GREAT STUDENT ATHLETES.
AND THEY'RE JUST A TESTAMENT OF WHAT WE GET TO WORK WITH EVERY DAY.
I AL OPPORTUNITY TO THANK EVERYONE IN THIS ROOM FOR YOUR SUPPORT FOR OUR STUDENT ATHLETES AND OUR COACHES, BECAUSE WE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DO EVERYTHING THAT WE DO WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT.
BUT DIRECT E I'M BLESSED THAT I HAVE A GREAT GROUP OF COACHES.
I ALSO HAVE A GREAT GROUP OF STUDENT ATHLETES THAT DAY IN DAY OUT, YOU KNOW, WORK HARD, HAVE DEDICATION TO NOT ONLY THEIR TEAMS, THEIR COACHES, BUT ALSO TO DALLAS COLLEGE.
I'M ONLY DO THEY REPRESENT THEMSELVES WELL IN OUR COMMUNITY, BUT THEY GO OUT AND REPRESENT US ON THE NATIONAL STAGE.
AS T HEAR COMMENTS, ESPECIALLY AFTER OUR TEAMS ARE TRAVELING, TO WHERE YOU KNOW, THE HOTELS WILL CALL BACK AND LET US KNOW WHAT A GREAT GROUP OF STUDENT ATHLETES WE HAVE, THAT'S A TESTAMENT TO THEIR HARD WORK AND DEDICATION AGAIN.
BUT ALSO, YOU KNOW, JUST THE GREAT PEOPLE THAT THEY ARE.
AND THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT FOR ATHLETICS.
>> CHAIRWOMAN LIRA BRAVO: SO PICTURE.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO THANK DR. JOSEPH, BECAUSE SHE HAS BEEN A GOD SEND FOR US.
WITHOUT HER, LEADERSHIP FOR ATHLETICS AND HER LOVE FOR ATHLETICS, ESPECIALLY IN THE SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME I'VE BEEN HERE, TRULY APPRECIATE T I KNOW I SPEAK FOR COACHES AND STUDENT ATHLETES, THANK YOU.
>> CHAIRWOMAN LIRA BRAVO: ALL RIGHT.
IT'S ALWAYS EXCITING TO SEE OUR STUDENTS, ESPECIALLY RECOGNIZING SUCH A SPECIAL MOMENT IN THEIR LIVES.
[00:45:01]
WE'L CHANCELLOR ANNOUNCEMENTS.[7. Chancellor and Board Announcements]
>> CHANCELLOR MAY: THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
LADY BEARS THUNDER DUCKS AND THE HOLIDAYS, I'M READY.
THAT WAS GREAT! I REALLY HAVE SAID AND ALL OF YOU FEEL THE SAME WAY, REALLY PROUD OF OUR FACULTY, STAFF, STUDENTS AND THE IMPACT OF HOW WE COME TOGETHER.
I WANT TO THANK THE BOARD FOR THE SUPPORT OF NOT JUST OUR ATHLETIC PROGRAMS, BUT ALL OF OUR PROGRAMS. SO MANY OF THEM EQUAL TYPES OF SUCCESS THAT IS WE DON'T GET TO SEE AND CELEBRATE, BUT REALLY IS FUN AS WE SAW FROM OUR STUDENT CULINARY PROGRAM TO EXCEL TO OUR SOCCER TEAMS AND REALLY, REALLY PROUD OF THAT WORK.
WHAT LAST BOARD MEETING OF THE YEAR AS WE WRAP UP 2021.
I'M PRACTICING 2022 AS WE HAVE THAT COMING UP, BECAUSE THAT'S WHEN WE'LL BE BACK TOGETHER AGAIN.
YOU YEAR WITH GREAT NEWS ALSO FROM OUR SOC UPDATE.
YOU HEARD EARLIER FROM DANIELLE VALLE.
SHE'S BEEN HARD AT WORK, VERY BUSY DURING THIS TIME, LEADING OUR EFFORTS AND NAVIGATING THE -- ALL THE ACCREDITATION OPPORTUNITIES THAT WE ENCOUNTER ALONG THE WAY.
AND THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HAS BEEN A PART OF THAT.
WE HOS PEER-REVIEWERS, WHO WERE IN OUR AREA VISITING SEVEN CAMPUSES, FOUR CENTERS AND 12 HIGH SCHOOLS BECAUSE THAT'S REQUIRED.
AND THE GREAT NEWS IS THAT THEY ALL WENT WELL.
THERE'S NO ADDITIONAL WERE REPORTING REQUIRED, WHICH IS WHAT WE WANTED TO SEE HAPPEN.
WE A BOARD REVIEWED OUR MONITORING REPORT ON PROGRAM ASSESSMENT AND COMPLIANT SUPPORT ON SUBSEQUENT CHANGE, WHICH IS THEIR -- MEANING WE WERE -- WHAT WE WERE GOING THROUGH AS PART OF THAT.
THEY WER WITH OUR FORMER COLLEGES, THE CONSINGLE INDICATION OF -- TIED TO THE PRECONSOLIDATION OF OUR COLLEGES.
THE GREAT NEWS IS THAT ALL OF THAT IS CLEAR, FINAL, OVER.
NO ADDITIONAL MONITORING OR REPORTS TO BE DONE.
SO CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE WHO WORKED ON THAT.
(APPLAUSE) (SPEAKER MICROPHONE)
>> CHANC SOMETHING I JUST WANT TO MENTION, BECAUSE I'M EXCITED THAT WE ARE GOING TO HAVE SOMETHING THAT WE'VE NOT DONE THAT I'M AWARE OF, REGISTRATION FAMILY DAY.
GETTING READY FOR THE SPRING SEMESTER AS STUDENTS NEED ASSISTANCE, WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING THEM IN-P VIRTUALLY.
IN THAT PROCESS WE'RE HOSTING -- HERE IN-PERSON, FAMILY DAY ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 18TH, FROM 9:00 TO 3:00 P.M.
ACROSS ALL SEVEN CAMPUSES TO ASSIST ANYONE WITH CHILDREN THAT THEY NEED TO BE TOGETHER ON SITE.
WE'LL MAKE THAT -- WE WILL HAVE -- IF YOU BRING YOUR CHILDREN, STORY-TELLING TIMES AND MOVIES I UNDERSTAND FOR THAT.
SO W SUPPORT SO MANY OF OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE WITH THEIR FAMILIES.
THEY'RE BALANCING WORK, FAMILY, CHILDREN, AND CERTAINLY MANY OF THEM HAVE HAD CHALLENGES THAT THEY'VE DEALT WITH THE PAST YEAR.
SO I LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING HOW IT GOES.
ALSO BE ON OUR MIND IN THE NEWS, AND WE CONTINUE TO PRACTICE THE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS THAT WE PUT IN PLACE.
WE'LL CONTINUE TO REEVALUATE THAT OBVIOUSLY.
WE'RE NOT CHANGING ANYTHING THAT WE'RE DOING RIGHT NOW.
AND I'M GETTING EMAILS REQUESTING THAT WE SHOULD OR MAYBE WANT TO CONSIDER DOING THAT.
I TH SOMETHING THAT WE JUST NEED TO EXERCISE.
AS WE GET PARTICULARLY AFTER THE HOLIDAYS, WE'LL GET A BETTER SENSE OF WHERE THINGS ARE GOING, WHAT WE NEED TO DO.
WITH THAT, MADAM CHAIR, THAT CONCLUDED MY REPORT.
>> CHAIRWOMAN LIRA BRAVO: THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPORT.
[00:50:02]
CONGRATULATION TO SAY TRUSTEE FLOYD ON HIS NOMINATION TO THE ABG COUNCIL OF STUDENT SUCCESS.THANK YOU FOR REPRESENTING DALLAS COLLEGE ON THAT BOARD.
WE CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR ABOUT ALL THE GREAT THINGS.
>> CHAIRWOMAN LIRA BRAVO: YOU WILL LEARN.
FIRST MEETING IS NEXT TUESDAY.
>> CHAIRWOMAN LIRA BRAVO: AWESOME.
ALSO RECOGNIZING THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED DALLAS COLLEGE AND NOW RETIRING TO A DIFFERENT SEASON IN THEIR LIVES.
WE ARE SAD TO SEE THESE GREAT CONTRIBUTORS TO STUDENT SUCCESS GO BUT WISH THEM THE BEST IN NEW ENDEAVORS.
ANTOINETTE HENDERSON, 32 YEARS.
AND LINDA SOBOUNICH, 34 YEARS.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO DALLAS COLLEGE.
ALSO OCCASION THIS MONTH, TRUSTEE WILLIAMS WILL BE CELEBRATING HER BIRTHDAY NEXT WEEK.
WE WISH YOU HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY.
AND CONSENT AGENDA, I WOULD LIKE TO REMIND THE BOARD TO COMPLETE THEIR SELF-ASSESSMENT, WHICH YOU HAVE NOT RECEIVED YET, BUT WILL BE EMAILED TO YOU TOMORROW.
>> CHAIRWOMAN LIRA BRAVO: BUT LOOK OUT FOR IT.
ALONG WITH THE CYBER SECURITY TRAINING, WHICH YOU DID ALREADY RECEIVE.
AND THAT IS DUE AT THE END OF THE YEAR.
I HAVE NOT DONE IT MYSELF, BUT I WILL BE DOING IT.
IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ON EITHER TASKS, LET MISS MOLINA KNOW.
LAST BOARD MEETING, I WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL THE STAFF, FACULTY AND STUDENTS AT DALLAS COLLEGE FOR ALL THE WORK YOU'VE DONE THIS PAST YEAR TO ADVANCE THE COLLEGE'S MISSION.
WE HOPE THE LEADERSHIP AND EVERYONE HAS A VERY MERRY HOLIDAY SEASON.
AND DO A HAVE COMMENTS? TRUSTEE FLORES.
>> I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE STAFF INVOLVED IN THE CITIZENSHIP WORKSHOPS TO OFFER FREE ASSISTANCE TO FILLING OUT THE CITIZENSHIP APPLICATION.
SO THEY WALKED AWAY WITH A COMPLETE PACKET, READY TO GO TO INS OR --
>> CHAIRWOMAN LIRA BRAVO: USCIS.
>> THIS IS A TREMENDOUS SERVICE.
WE HELD THE FIRST ONE OCTOBER 30TH.
AND ONE THIS PAST SATURDAY AT BROOKHAVEN DECEMBER 4TH.
THE ONE AT BROOKHAVEN WAS NOT AS WELL TRAFFICKED AS THE OTHERS, HOWEVER, THEY HAD ABOUT -- WELL, THIS WAS A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN DALLAS COLLEGE...
>> SO THEY HAD VOLUNTEERS THERE.
WE WERE ABLE TO KIND OF ENGAGE IN A GROUP CONVERSATION WITH THEM.
IT WAS MOSTLY WOMEN, MAYBE TWO OR THREE MEN, ABOUT 30 PEOPLE AND REALLY PUSHING DALLAS COLLEGE AND THE PROGRAMS THAT WE OFFER TO THEM.
SO IT WAS A REAL GOOD SMALLER EXPERIENCE FOR THOSE PEOPLE.
WE HOPE EITHER THEM OR FAMILY MEMBERS WILL CONVERT INTO DALLAS COLLEGE STUDENTS.
SO E INVOLVED, THE PRESIDENTS OF CAMPUSES, REALLY DO THANK YOU FOR ALL THE GREAT WORK.
AND DR. MAY, THANK YOU FOR AGREEING TO HAVE DALLAS COLLEGE BE A SPONSOR.
WE HAVE THREE MORE, ONE HELD IN CEDAR VALLEY IN MARCH AND THE OTHER TWO IN FORT WORTH.
>> CHAIRWOMAN LIRA BRAVO: ANY OTHER TRUSTEES HAVE COMMENTS?
>> AGAIN, I MENTIONED AT OUR LAST BOARD MEETING, THE SUCCESS WE HAD WITH THE VETERANS PROGRAM.
I SAY IT EACH MEETING FOR THE REST OF NEXT YEAR AND NOT SAY IT AS ENOUGH APPRECIATION FOR THE COLLEGE STAFF AND ALL THE HELP IN THE PLANNING AND ALL THE VOLUNTEERS WHO CAME OUT AND WORKED.
[00:55:02]
