WE HAVE A LIMITED NUMBER OF AUDIENCE MEMBERS HERE AND NO MATTER HOW YOU'RE WATCHING, WE APPRECIATE YOU, THANK YOU SO MUCH.

OVER THE NEXT HOUR OUR CONVERSATION WILL FOCUS ON THE LONG-AWAITED END OF OUR COLLEGE ORGANIZATION, HOW WE ARE MOVING FORWARD AS A UNITED INSTITUTION.

IT'S BEEN MORE THAN TWO YEARS SINCE PLANS WERE ANNOUNCED TO MERGE DCCCD INTO UNIFIED.

WE ARE DALLAS COLLEGE, TRANSMISSION THAT DID NOT HAPPEN OVERNIGHT.

AS THE TWO TASKED WITH LEADING OUR COLLEGE THROUGH THE CHANGE, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE LESSONS YOU HAVE LEARNED ALONG THE WAY?

I CANNOT SEE YOU BUT CERTAINLY, I APPRECIATE YOU AND ALL OF YOU, THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU HAVE DONE OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS.

JUST A BRIEF ON WHY WE MADE THE DECISION TO CONSOLIDATE OUR COLLEGES.

IT WAS NOT ABOUT DOLLARS, IT REALLY WAS NOT ABOUT THAT WE THOUGHT JUST THINGS NEEDED TO CHANGE, IT WAS A REALIZATION THAT OUR EMPLOYERS, COMMUNITIES HAVE REALLY EVOLVED OVER THE LAST 50 YEARS.

WHEN WE LOOK BACK TO THE EARLY DAYS, ONLY ABOUT 20 OR 22 PERCENT OF THE POPULATION NEEDED A POSTSECONDARY CREDENTIAL TODAY IT IS OVER 65 PERCENT.

AND OUR DESIGN WORKED GREAT WHEN WE REALLY DID NOT NEED TO EDUCATE THE MAJORITY OF THE POPULATION BUT WE DO TODAY AND YET WE WERE STIL OPERATING HONESTLY THE NUMBERS IN THE COMMUNITY OVER 50 YEARS AGO WE WERE SEEING ONLY 27 PERCENT IN A POSTSECONDARY CREDENTIAL AND THE CREDENTIALS HAVE CHANGED AS WELL.

AND THE NEED TO RESPOND IS ALSO RESPOND.

I THINK THE LESSONS LEARNED AS WE LISTEN TO STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS, AND EMPLOYER WE HAD AN EXAMPLE AT THE BOARD MEETING I DON'T THINK WHAT OCCURRED IN HER OLD STRUCTURE WHERE WE WERE ABLE TO PARTNER WITH AN ORGANIZATION ORGANIZATIONS ACTUALLY WITHIN THE COMMUNITY AND WAYS TO SOLVE THE NEEDS OF INDIVIDUALS AND EMPLOYERS AND TO REALLY HELP THE COMMUNITY TO PROSPER.

WE ALSO LEARNED THAT THE FOLKS WERE LEAVING BEHIND WERE THE MOST VULNERABLE WITH IN THE COMMUNITY, THOSE THAT UNDERSTOOD THE LEAST ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY AND HOW TO ACCESS THEM.

ALSO I THINK YOU WOULD AGREE TO THIS, WE HAVE SOME AMAZING PEOPLE IN OUR ORGANIZATION.

JUST, JUST INCREDIBLE PEOPLE.

THAT EVEN THOUGH OVER THE TWO YEARS, WE DID NOT ALWAYS HAVE A ROADMAP, TO FOLLOW, WE WERE LEARNING MUCH OF THIS AS WE WENT THROUGH THE PROCESS AND READ HEROES STEP UP EVERY SINGLE DAY TO HELP FIGURE OUT.

AND WE STILL DO! BECAUSE SOME OF THE OLD STRUCTURES HAVE CHANGED AND THE GO TO PEOPLE ARE NOT THERE AND WE HAVE TO SORT IT OUT AND FIGURE IT OUT EVEN AS WE ARE PUTTING IN PLACE THE NEW STRUCTURE AND DESIGN SO THANK YOU FOR THAT.

WE HAD SO MANY PEOPLE ALONG THE WAY THAT REGARDLESS OF WHERE THEY WERE, IF THEY WERE SUPPORTIVE OR CONVINCED THIS WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO PEOPLE REALLY STEPPED UP.

ALL ALONG THE WAY.

YOU THINK ABOUT, THERE ARE PARTS OF THIS WE HAD TO DO THEY HAVE THE PARTS RELATED TO ACCREDITATION AND THAT WAS DEFINED BUT EVEN THAT TO GO THROUGH THE PROCESS FOR THE TEAM TO COME OUT AND EVALUATE YOU KNOW AND THEY DON'T PLAY AROUND, TO EVALUATE AND SAY OKAY, YOU GUYS HAVE DONE THIS IN THE RIGHT WAY, THEY HAD STUDENTS ENGAGED IN THE CONVERSATION WITH THEM IN THEIR SITE VISIT HERE AND WHAT THEY HEARD FROM STUDENTS, THE DIFFERENCE THEY COULD TELL THAT MADE FOR STUDENTS BECAUSE I TALK A LOT ABOUT THAT WE HAVE BEEN IN THIS BUSINESS TO IDENTIFY BARRIERS, THAT GET IN THE WAY OF STUDENT SUCCESS.

TO THROUGH AND BEYOND US.

WHETHER IT IS -- IN THE END THERE WERE STRUCTURE WAS A BARRIER.

AND SO WE KNEW IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT BUT NECESSARY AND ABSOLUTELY, CLEARLY THERE ARE PAIN POINTS AND THE TRANSITION ASPECTS.

YOU KNOW, WE WILL CONTINUE TO EVOLVE MOVING FORWARD BUT I REALLY AM EXCITED AS I LOOK AHEAD, KNOWING THAT WE'VE GOT A GREAT TEAM IN PLACE AND JUST A REAL SPIRIT OF WILLINGNESS AMONGST PEOPLE TO BUILD ON THE FOUNDATION OF DCCCD, THAT THE DALLAS COLLEGE, WE ARE ABOUT 16 MONTHS OLD NOW AS DALLAS COLLEGE.

WE'VE LEARNED SOME THINGS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO STUDENTS AND CERTAINLY WE GOT SOME INTERNAL THINGS THAT WE WILL CONTINUE TO FOCUS ON AND ADDRESS OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS.

THIS IS WHERE WE DO WITH CREDENTIALING, THIS IS ALSO WHERE WE HOUSE DIFFERENT SPECIAL ACADEMIC PROGRAMS LIKE HONOR SOCIETY.

IT IS A VERY ROBUST AREA, AN AREA THAT REALLY WORKS CROSS COLLABORATIVELY WITH THE ACADEMIC INCUBATOR AS WELL AS WITH STUDENT SUCCESS.

WHETHER IT IS VIA ACADEMIC SCHEDULING, TUTORING OR OTHER ACADEMIC SUPPORTS.

THAT AREA JUST COVERS SEVERAL CRITICAL NEEDS FOR OUR STUDENTS AND WORKS IN COMPANION WITH THE WHOLE COLLEGE IN TERMS OF WORKFORCE AND STUDENT SUCCESS.

OUR SCHOOLS AS YOU KNOW OUR HEALTH SCIENCE, EDUCATION, ENGINEERING, TECHNOLOGY, MATH AND SCIENCE.

SCHOOL OF LAW AND PUBLIC SERVICE.

WE HAVE THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, HOSPITALITY AND GLOBAL TRADE.

MANUFACTURING AND INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGIES, AND THOSE COVER THE SPECIFIC CRITERIA FOR BOTH CREDIT PROGRAMS AS WELL AS NON- CREDIT PROGRAMS. THIS IS VERY NEW FOR US, VERY GROUNDBREAKING.

I WAS HAPPY TO BE PARTICIPATING IN A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT LAST WEEK TO KNOW THAT WE ARE DOING COMMUNITY COLLEGE 3.0 WHERE WE REMOVED SILOS BETWEEN NONCREDIT AND CREDIT.

MORE IMPORTANT, WE REMOVED SILOS BETWEEN STUDENT SUCCESS AND WORKFORCE AND I HAVE TO HONESTLY SAY THAT ISN'T SOMETHING JUST REFLECTED IN OUR STRUCTURE BUT REALLY IN OUR LEADERSHIP AND HOW WELL WE WORK TOGETHER COLLABORATIVELY AS A TEAM.

NOT ONLY WITH THE VICE CHANCELLOR OF WORKFORCE AND VICE CHANCELLOR STUDENT SUCCESS, BUT ALSO WITH OUR PRESIDENTIAL PARTNERS.

I'M HAPPY TO SEE DOCTOR EGGLESTON HERE AND I'M GLAD THAT WE ARE RESPONSIVE TO COMMUNITY NEEDS, DEMANDS FOR STUDENTS FOR NONCREDIT AND CREDIT PROGRAMMING.

AGAIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE 3.0 WITH REALLY ALIGNING OUR TEMPLATES OUR CRITICAL PRESENTATION TO STUDENTS OF WHAT OUR COURSES LOOK LIKE ONLINE.

SO THEY CAN NAVIGATE THEM BETTER.

AS ONE COLLEGE, DALLAS COLLEGE, WERE ABLE TO COME TOGETHER BEHIND WHAT THE STUDENTS NEED AND THAT THEY HAVE CHALLENGES IN THIS PANDEMIC WHERE MANY OFFERINGS HAVE BEEN ONLINE FOR OVER A YEAR NOW AND SO WE REALLY NEED TO BE RESPONSIVE TO THAT AND MAKE SURE WE ARE ALLOWING THEM TO NAVIGATE COURSES IN A MANNER THAT'S EASY FOR THEM SO THEY CAN BE SUCCESSFUL I THEIR ENDEAVORS THERE.

WE ALSO HAVE EDUCATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS UNDER ACADEMIC AFFAIRS, WHICH IS THE HOME OF OVER 32,000 PLUS DUAL CREDIT STUDENTS.

SOME OF WHICH TAKE COURSES ON THE CAMPUSES.

MANY OF WHOM TAKE COURSES AT THEIR HOME CAMPUSES, AND FINALLY, I FEEL LIKE I AM MISSING SOMETHING.

WHAT IS ENROLLMENT AND MANAGEMENT? THAT'S FOR EQUIPMENT OUTREACH RETENTION FINANCIAL AID ADMISSIONS AND REGISTRAR.

YOU SAY HOW IS THAT ANY DIFFERENT THAN WHAT IT WAS BEFORE? LET ME TELL YOU ONE DIFFERENCE.

WE HAVE A POSITION CALLED THE COLLEGE COACH.

THE COLLEGE COACHES REACH OUT TO THE EIGHTH-GRADERS.

WE ARE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ISDS, WE CREATE A COLLEGE GROWING CULTURE FROM EARLY ON WE ARE TRYING TO SUPPORT THOSE INDIVIDUALS WHO REALLY DID NOT SEE OR CONSIDER THEMSELVES AS COLLEGE MATERIAL.

THAT IS ONE MAIN DIFFERENCE.

WE ALSO SUPPORT INTENTIONALLY OUR ADULT STUDENTS WHO ARE COMING BACK TO US BUT THEY DON'T KNOW THE WAY.

THEY GET LOST IN OUR PROCESSES BECAUSE THEY ARE COMPLEX.

AND WE ARE STILL WORKING ON MAKING THEM SIMPLER.

BUT THEY ARE COMPLEX.

I HAVE MYSELF GOT TO OUR ADMISSIONS PROCESS AND I DON'T THINK I WOULD HAVE MADE IT TO DALLAS COLLEGE SO WE ARE CONTINUOUSLY WORKING AND SIMPLY FINDING THE SPLIT-SECOND AREA STUDENT SUCCESS.

THE AREA HAS OUR SUCCESS COACHING, OUR PATHWAY SPECIALISTS, CAREER AND TRANSFER SPECIALISTS AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT UNIT FOR STUDENT SUCCESS.

MS. BETSY RIVAS WHO IS IN THE AUDIENCE TODAY IS THE ONE WHO LEADS THOSE EFFORTS FOR STUDENT SUCCESS.

HOW IS THAT DIFFERENT FROM WHAT WE'VE DONE BEFORE? I WILL JUST TELL YOU ONE TITLE WHICH EVERYONE HAS HEARD OF SUCCESS COACHES.

THOSE INDIVIDUALS ARE A CRITICAL PIECE TO STANDING UP AND SUCCESS OF THE NEW MODEL.

THE INDIVIDUALS, THEY WALK THEM ALL THE WAY.

ONCE THERE READY FROM THE COLLEGE COACHES, THEY ARE HANDED OFF TO OUR SUCCESS COACH.

WHO WILL WALK WITH THEM ALL THE REST OF THE WAY.

WE WILL CONNECT THEM TO RESOURCES WHETHER THEY MIGHT BE, THEY NEED FOOD, COUNSELING, A JOB, THEY NEED HELP WITH RESUME.

THEY NEED TO HAVE BETTER CLARITY ABOUT WHAT PATHWAY THEY NEED TO PURSUE.

BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW ABOUT WHAT JOBS AND WHAT COULD I DO AND I HAVE A FAMILY AND HOW DO I MANAGE ALL OF THIS? THAT'S WHAT THE SUCCESS COACH DOES.

HOLDS A STUDENTS HAND AND IS A PARTNER ALONG THE WAY.

THEN WE TALK ABOUT THE STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES, SUPPORT AND WELLNESS.

DOCTOR TRACY JOHNSON, THE AREA HAS BASIC NEEDS PEOPLE.

OUR INDIVIDUALS AND HELPING STUDENTS WITH MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING, WITH HEALTH AND WELLNESS, WITH FOOD AND HOUSING AND CHILD CARE.

WE HAVE SUPPORT ALSO FOR OUR FOSTER STUDENTS, WE HAVE SUPPORT FOR MEN OF COLOR, A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT OPPORTUNITIES THERE FOR DIFFERENT STUDENT POPULATIONS.

IN INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH WHICH IS REALLY CALLED STRATEGIC ANALYTICS.

IN THAT AREA HAS TWO MAIN FUNCTIONS.

ONE OF THE PROBLEMS THAT NEGATIVELY IMPACTS OUR COMMUNITY AND THEIR VERY OWN DALLAS COLLEGE STUDENTS IS LACK OF ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE AND HIGH QUALITY CHILDCARE.

THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HAS MASS CHILD CARE CLOSURES.

AND IN THIS WAS A CRITICAL ROLE THAT ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY CHILDCARE PLAYS IN THE ECONOMIC HEALTH OF OUR REGION AND SLEEP.

BECAUSE THE CHILDCARE SECTOR ENABLES MANY PARENTS AND STUDENTS TO WORK, DEVELOPMENTS THAT THREATEN THE QUALITY, QUANTITY OR AFFORDABILITY OF THE SERVICE DISCOURAGE MANY PARENTS, WOMEN IN PARTICULAR, TO RETURN TO THE LABOR FORCE.

BECAUSE OF THIS, CHILDCARE IS NOW FINALLY BEING RECOGNIZED AS AN ESSENTIAL SERVICE FOR WORKING PARENTS AND STUDENTS.

WHAT ARE WE AT DALLAS COLLEGE AND WHAT ARE WE AT THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION DOING TO SOLVE THESE PROBLEMS? FIRST, WE ARE JUST IN THE NEED TO DEVELOP A ROBUST EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATOR WORKFORCE.

OUR REGION IS SHORT OVER 4000 EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATORS.

WE WORKED TO CREATE THE FIRST COMMUNITY COLLEGE BACHELORS DEGREE IN EDUCATION AND THE ENTIRE STATE.

$79 PER CREDIT THIS IS THE MOST AFFORDABLE EDUCATION BACHELORS DEGREE IN THE STATE.

SOMETHING WE KNOW OUR STUDENTS ARE EXCITED ABOUT BECAUSE WE HAD OVER 3000 APPLICATIONS FOR THE FIRST COHORT THAT STARTED THIS FALL.

THIS ACADEMIC YEAR WE WILL ERODE NEARLY 500 STUDENTS IN UPPER LEVEL BACHELORS DEGREE COURSES AND EXPECT THE NUMBER TO DOUBLE TO ABOUT 1000 NEXT YEAR.

SECOND, OUR EARLY CHILDHOOD STUDENTS TOLD US THEY NEEDED TO WORK IN ORDER TO CONTINUE TO PROGRESS THROUGH THEIR DEGREE PLANS.

MANY OF OUR STUDENTS COME TO US HAVING TO CHOOSE BETWEEN WORKER SCHOOL LEAVING THEM WITHOUT A VIABLE PATHWAY TO CONTINUE THEIR EDUCATION.

WE'VE BEEN WORKING WITH THE DALLAS COLLEGE WORKFORCE AND ADVANCEMENT TEAMS AND HAVE BEEN ABLE TO IDENTIFY NEARLY $1 MILLION IN FEDERAL WORK-STUDY FUNDING TO CREATE PAID WORK-BASED LEARNING EXPERIENCES FOR STUDENTS.

THIS MEANS DALLAS COLLEGE STUDENTS ARE EARNING CLASS CREDIT AND GETTING PAID WHILE WORKING UP TO 20 HOURS A WEEK DIRECTLY WITH YOUNG STUDENTS IN EARLY LEARNING CLASSROOMS. THESE TYPES OF INTENTIONAL WORK-BASED LEARNING EXPERIENCE EXPOSE OUR STUDENTS TO THE INDUSTRY EARLY ON WHILE PROVIDING THEM WITH A SEAMLESS PATHWAY TO A FULL-TIME JOB ONCE THEY FINISH THEIR DEGREE.

FINALLY, AS DISCUSSED EARLIER STUDENTS HAVE SHARED WITH US THEY NEED ACCESS TO CHILDCARE THAT IS AFFORDABLE AND HIGH QUALITY.

TO ADDRESS THIS WE BEEN WORKING WITH STUDENTS SUCCESS LEADERSHIP TO -- DELICACY WAS LOOKING HIGH-QUALITY CHILDCARE CENTERS IN EACH OF OUR SEVEN CAMPUSES BUT STUDENTS CAN ALSO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF CHILDCARE VOUCHERS, GIVING THEM ACCESS TO FREE CHILDCARE AND ELIGIBLE CENTERS ACROSS DALLAS COUNTY.

WE DON'T WANT STUDENTS TO HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THEIR EDUCATION AND CARING FOR THEIR CHILDREN.

I WORK IN THE SPACE IS JUST STARTING AND WE ARE REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO CONTINUING TO WORK COLLABORATIVELY WITH OTHER DALLAS COLLEGE DEPARTMENTS TO DEVELOP INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS TO COMPLEX COMMUNITY PROBLEMS. THANK YOU.

BUT ALONG THE WAY WE ALSO REALIZED IN SOME AREAS, WE WILL NEED TO CREATE GREATER INVESTMENTS, MAKING SURE THAT WE GET THE PEOPLE IN PLACE TO REALLY SERVE STUDENTS WELL.

AND I'VE KIND OF HEARD THAT FROM A LOT OF FOLKS TODAY THAT OUR INVESTMENTS HAVE BEEN, REALLY WHAT I WILL CALL STUDENT FACING AND STUDENT SUPPORT POSITIONS.

MAKING SURE WE HAVE THE PEOPLE IN PLACE AND THINGS WE HADN'T REALLY THOUGHT ABOUT BEFORE, YOU JUST HEARD DR. DEHAAS TALK ABOUT CHILDCARE.
