GOOD MORNING, WELCOME TO OUR EMPLOYEE TOWNHOME TODAY ITS WAY TO VALUE HERE.

[Employee Town Hall on May 18, 2021.]

[00:00:05]

DURING OUR LAST MEETING WE HAD NEARLY 3000 OF YOU JOIN US AND COME TOGETHER SO WE ARE REALLY APPRECIATE NOT ONLY THOSE OF YOU WHO JOIN IN BUT THOSE OF YOU WHO SHARED QUESTIONS AS WELL.

I HOPE YOU WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO.

AS WE MOVE FORWARD WITH THE TOWN HALLS WE WANT TO CONTINUE TO RESPOND TO YOUR QUESTIONS.

REALLY THIS IS ABOUT HOW WE DO A BETTER JOB OF COMMUNICATING AND MAKING SURE THAT WE ARE CREATING TRANSPARENCY SO THAT EVERYONE IS NOT ONLY INFORMED BUT HOPEFULLY FEELS THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENGAGE.

WE WILL ALSO BE MORE INTENTIONAL ABOUT HIGHLIGHTING SOME TOPICS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO OUR STUDENTS, OUR COMMUNITY AND DALLAS COLLEGE AS A WHOLE.

TODAY, WE WILL BE DOING JUST THAT BY FOCUSING ON SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND INCLUSION.

I TRULY APPRECIATE YOUR ENGAGEMENT IN THESE MEETINGS BECAUSE IT GIVES US THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE IMPORTANT INFORMATION AND HEAR WHAT IS ON YOUR MIND.

TO DATE WE WILL BE RESPONDING TO YOUR PRECIPITATE QUESTIONS AS WELL AS TAKING A LIVE QUESTIONS AND SEE SOME HAVE ALREADY POPPED IN, SO THANK YOU FOR THAT.

THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE QUESTIONS YOU MAY SEND THEM TO TOWNHALL AT DCC .

EDU.

WE WILL GET TO AS MANY AS POSSIBLE TODAY.

JOINING ME TODAY IS MARISOL ROMANY OUR CHIEF DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION OFFICER.

DOCTOR KENNETH CHAPMAN EQUITY AND INCLUSION, GEORGEANNE MOSS FOR SUSTAINED ABILITY AND OUTREACH INITIATIVES AND PROFESSOR ELGRIE HURD FROM OUR BROOKHAVEN CAMPUS.

OUR EXECUTIVE VICE CHANCELLOR DOCTOR JOE LONON I WILL TURN OVER TO YOU.

>> THANK YOU CHANCELLOR MAY.

I APPRECIATE ALL THE QUESTIONS COMING IN.

THE SERIES OF TOPICS ARE GOING TO DISCUSS WITH THE PANEL TODAY BUT BEFORE WE GET TO THAT DOCTOR MAY ANYTHING NEW WITH YOU? THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE AND HIGHLIGHT A LITTLE BIT SOME RECENT NEWS.

>> AT THAT WE WOULD SKATE RIGHT BY THAT THIS MORNING.

OBVIOUSLY, I MADE AN ANNOUNCEMENT THAT AFFECTS ME BUT MOST ARE PORTLY RELATIVE TO DALLAS COLLEGE TO OUR COMMUNITY.

I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SAY WHEN WE TALKED ABOUT THIS THERE IS NEVER AN IDEAL TIME TO MAKE DECISIONS LIKE THIS BUT FOR ME IT'S REALLY ALWAYS AS I LOOK AT IT ABOUT INSTITUTIONAL STEWARDSHIP.

ONE, LOOKING AT SOME OF THE INCREDIBLE TEAM THAT WE PULLED TOGETHER IN THE LEADERS SHIP ROLES IN DALLAS COLLEGE.

WHEN YOU MAKE A TRANSITION IN THIS AREA OR THIS APPROACH YOU WANT TO BE SURE THAT YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE AS YOU HANDLE, HANDOFF TO THE INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE GOING TO CONTINUE TO DO GREAT WORK.

BOY, I COULD NOT BE MORE PROUD OF THE GROUP THAT WE HAVE TOGETHER IN THE WORK THAT IS TAKEN PLACE.

NOT EASY AS WE MAKE THE TRANSITION IMPORTANT.

KNOWING THAT WE ARE ABOUT TO FINALLY GET ALSO TO IMPLEMENTING THE PLANS.

QUITE HONESTLY, IMPLEMENTATION IS EASIER THAN PLANNING ON A PROJECT LIKE THAT AND GETTING THAT APPROVED BY THE VOTERS AND GOING FORWARD WHERE THAT IS GOING TO TAKE YEARS TO IMPLEMENT.

WE WANT TO BE SURE THAT THE INSTITUTION HAS BEEN GUIDED DURING THAT TIME WITH SOMEONE THAT CAN TAKE IT THROUGH AS LONG AS THE PROCESS AS POSSIBLE.

WHILE WE'VE GOT ABOUT 830 MINUTE, 30 MONTH WINDOW, WE ARE ALREADY UNDERWAY AND JUST A GREAT TEAM AND GREAT PARTNERS.

I WORKED ON THAT PROJECT, WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT IS SUCCESSFUL AS WELL.

AND CONTINUE TO CONTINUE WITH HER EARLY HIGH SCHOOLS AND PTECH.

IT JUST SEEMED TO ME THAT FROM A STRATEGIC POINT OF VIEW THIS WAS A GOOD TIME.

HAD I ORIGINALLY PLANNED TO STAY A LITTLE BIT LONGER, I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE, EXCEPT THAT IT JUST FELT LIKE THIS WAS THE TIME TO MAKE THAT TRANSITION SO THAT THINGS

[00:05:01]

WOULD GO SMOOTHLY GOING FORWARD.

AND OF COURSE, YOU HAVE GOT TO PUT UP WITH ME FOR ANOTHER YEAR ANYWAY AS WE LOOK TO MAKE SURE THAT WE DO THIS HANDOFF AND TRANSITION IN THE RIGHT WAY.

TO ALL THE SPECULATION, NO, I AM HEALTHY.

I AM DOING WELL.

THE FAMILY IS DOING GREAT.

WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT IT.

THERE IS NO EXTERNAL ISSUES AT ALL.

IT REALLY IS ABOUT SUPPORTING THE NEEDS AND MAKING SURE THAT ALL INDIVIDUALS IN OUR COMMUNITY ARE SERVED WELL.

IN THE FUTURE OUR EMPLOYERS ARE SUPPORTED AND THEIR NEEDS ARE BEING MET AND OUR COMMUNITY CONTINUES TO BE SUCCESSFUL WITH DALLAS COLLEGE BEING AN IMPORTANT PART OF IT.

THAT'S A GREAT THING ABOUT THIS INSTITUTION IT'S BIGGER THAN ANYONE OF US AND BIGGER THAN ALL OF US.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THAT IS WHAT REALLY MATTERS.

PROUD TO BE A PART OF IT NOW, TO HAVE BEEN A PART OF IT IN THE PAST AND TO REALLY BE ABLE TO SET THE STAGE FOR HOPEFULLY THE NEXT 50 YEARS WITH PREPARING FOR GREAT LEADERS WHO WILL FOLLOW.

WITH THAT, LET'S JUMP RIGHT IN TO TODAY.

>> THANK YOU DOCTOR MAY.

THERE ARE A LOT OF CRAZY RUMORS OUT THERE.

GLAD YOU COULD SHARE WITH EVERYONE.

OBVIOUSLY, YOU HAVE A LONG AND STORIED CAREER AND YOU ARE NOT LEAVING ANYTIME SOON SO WE LOOK FORWARD TO CONTINUED WORKING WITH YOU.

WITH THAT, LET'S SHIFT TO THE IMPORTANT TOPICS AT HAND.

THE MULTITUDE OF QUESTIONS WE HAVE RECEIVED AND DOCTOR MAY I WILL START THE FIRST QUESTION WITH YOU.

GIVEN THE FOCUS AND IMPORTANCE ON SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND INCLUSION CAN YOU TELL US YOUR PERSPECTIVE OF HOW WE GOT HERE AS AN INSTITUTION AND A WHITE YOU FEEL THESE TOPICS ARE SO IMPORTANT?

>> I AM GUESSING FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE IT WAS JUST OBVIOUS WHY IT IS IMPORTANT.

AS INSTITUTIONS CREATED AND PROVIDED RESOURCES TO MEET THE NEEDS OF INDIVIDUALS OUR EMPLOYERS, OUR COMMUNITY TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE NOT JUST REACTING BUT THAT WE ARE LEADING IN IMPORTANT AREAS.

I DON'T THINK THERE IS ANY MORE IMPORTANT THAN WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT AS IT RELATES TO BOTH SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION AND ENSURING THAT EVERYONE HAS AN OPPORTUNITY BUT ALSO THAT WE PREPARE CITIZENS TO NOT ONLY TAKE CARE OF TODAY'S WORLD BUT TO MAKE OUR WORLD BETTER AND TO THE FUTURE.

I REALLY THINK THIS IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF EVERY SINGLE INSTITUTION, EDUCATION OR NOT.

I DO THINK THAT EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS HAVE A UNIQUE RESPONSIBILITY TO DEMONSTRATE LEADERSHIP IN THIS AREA AND BY CREATING A CULTURAL WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION THAT IS INCLUSIVE, RESPECTFUL AND DOESN'T TAKE FOR GRANITE INDIVIDUALS AT ALL.

I THINK BACK ON IT MIGHT CAREER AND IT HAS BEEN A LONG ONE OF COUNTLESS STORIES THAT I HAVE HEARD THAT BROUGHT ME TO TEARS.

WITH STORIES OF SYSTEMIC AND RACIAL AND SOCIAL INJUSTICE.

I WAS ACTUALLY TALKING TO DOCTOR C BROOKS LAST NIGHT.

AT CEDAR VALLEY, WHO MENTIONED A PLACE I USED TO WORK AND IT BROUGHT BACK THE PAIN OF TALKING TO INDIVIDUALS FROM THE BLACK COMMUNITY THERE THAT DESCRIBED WHAT IT WAS LIKE WHEN THEY WERE TRYING TO GET INTO EDUCATION.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE OUR INSTITUTIONS MAKE TODAY.

I HAVE BEEN READING ABOUT THE FARMWORKERS ASSOCIATION IN THE 60S.

THE ISSUES THAT THOSE PARTICULARLY IN AGRICULTURE FACED AND THE CHALLENGES THAT THEY FACED DURING THAT TIME AND AGAIN LACK OF ACCESS NOT ONLY TO EDUCATION BUT TO BASIC NEEDS.

WE STAND AT A POINT IN TIME WHERE WE REALLY HAVE TO STAND UP AGAINST HATE.

WE HAVE TO SUPPORT INCLUSION.

CERTAINLY VALUES THAT I HAVE.

WE WANT THAT NOT ONLY FOR OURSELVES BUT FOR OUR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES AND

[00:10:04]

THOSE AROUND US.

I REALIZE IT SOMETIMES, MANY DON'T FULLY UNDERSTAND THE IMPACT THAT WORDS HAVE ON PEOPLE.

AND THAT SUCH INTOLERANCE AND INSENSITIVITY TO OTHERS THESE TYPES OF IDEOLOGIES HAVE NO PLACE IN OUR CURRICULUM, OUR CLASSROOM OR ON OUR CAMPUS.

THIS PRECEDES ME, PRECEDES THE CONSOLIDATION OF DALLAS COLLEGE BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY I THINK THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE NEED TO PUT A STAKE IN THE GROUND AS A LEGACY GOING FORWARD TO BEING CLEAR WHAT WE STAND FOR, WHAT WE REPRESENT AND WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT.

PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS MAKING COMMENTS ABOUT BEING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY I SAY WE NEED TO BE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF PEOPLE.

THE RIGHT SIDE OF OUR COMMUNITY NOW AND GUIDE IT INTO THE FUTURE.

WITH ALL THIS IN MIND THIS IS REALLY WHAT WE CREATED THIS OFFICE OF SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND INCLUSION TO HELP US STAY FOCUSED.

TO HELP US BUILD UP THE CULTURE AND MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE PAYING ATTENTION TO NOT JUST ISSUES THAT ARE OBVIOUS BUT PERHAPS, IMPORTANT ISSUES LIKE SUSTAINED ABILITY THAT MAY NOT ALWAYS BE CLEAR ABOUT HOW THAT CONTRIBUTES IN ITS OWN WAY TO INEQUITY WITHIN OUR COMMUNITIES UNLESS WE ARE PAYING ATTENTION TO IT.

ANYWAY, PROBABLY MORE THAN YOU WERE HOPING FOR THIS MORNING BUT I AM REALLY GLAD THAT WE ARE MOVING IN THIS DIRECTION.

>> GREAT, THANK YOU DOCTOR MAY.

RECENTLY YOU AND THE BOARD PRESENTED TO THE TRUSTEES AND PART OF WHAT YOU TALKED ABOUT WAS THE TERMS THAT WE USE DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND SOMEHOW THOSE ARE USED INTERCHANGEABLY.

AND MAKE SURE WE ARE ON THE SAME PAGE CAN YOU BRIEFLY DESCRIBE WHAT THESE TERMS MEAN AND WHAT SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY LOOKS LIKE HERE AT DALLAS COLLEGE.

>> SURE, I AM GOING TO DO THAT IN A VERY SPECIFIC WAY.

INSTEAD OF GIVING YOU THE TEXTBOOK DEFINITION OR MANY OF THE DEFINITIONS THAT ARE OUT THERE I WOULD LIKE TO PRESENT IT IN A DIFFERENT WAY BY SHOWING YOU A BUSINESS ANALOGY.

IF YOU TAKE THE TERM DIVERSITY, IT'S WHO YOU SERVE, WHO YOUR CUSTOMER IS.

SO YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT THINGS LIKE RACE, ETHNICITY, GENDER, AGE, NATIONAL ORIGIN BUT THERE IS MORE TO IT THAT THAN THAT.

YOU ALSO HAVE TO LOOK AT THE DIFFERENT IDEAS AND PERSPECTIVES AND VALUES THAT PEOPLE BRING WHEN THEY COME THROUGH YOUR DOOR.

WHETHER THEY ARE YOUR EMPLOYEE OR CUSTOMER.

IN TERMS OF EQUITY WE LOOK AT WHAT YOU OFFER.

I KNOW THAT I SAID STORE, BUSINESS OWNER, AND YOUR ART THINKING ABOUT YOUR SERVICE OR PRODUCT BUT I AM TAKING MORE THAN THAT.

WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU OFFER? WHAT IS YOUR DIFFERENTIATOR FOR PEOPLE TO COME THROUGH YOUR DOOR? THE FAIR TREATMENT, THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT YOU OFFER, THAT (WORD? ) FOR ALL PEOPLE ALL OF THOSE CHARACTERISTICS TO DIFFERENT CUSTOMERS WHETHER IT IS YOUR CLIENT OR EMPLOYEE.

BUT YOU ALSO DO SOMETHING ELSE THAT IS A DIFFERENT IF YOU ARE PRACTICING EQUITY AND THAT IS IDENTIFYING AND ILLUMINATING BARRIERS.

BARRIERS THAT PREVENT THE PARTICIPATION OF SPECIFIC CATEGORIES OR GROUPS.

WHEN IT COMES TO INCLUSION, IT'S HOW YOU OFFER IT.

SO PROVIDING THAT ENVIRONMENT WHERE PEOPLE FEEL WELCOME, RESPECTED AND THAT THEY BELONG.

THAT IS A BUSINESS ANALOGY.

NOW LET'S GET TO THE FUN PART AND TALK ABOUT THE SOCIAL ANALOGY.

YOU MAY HAVE ALREADY HEARD THIS.

THE SAME CHARACTERISTICS OF A PEOPLE TO DESCRIBE DIVERSITY BUT BECAUSE WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A SOCIAL ANALOGY THINK OF THIS AS YOU BEING OUT IN THE COMMUNITY AND BEING ASKED TO A PARTY.

THAT REPRESENTS EQUITY.

TO GET TO INCLUSION YOU HAVE TO BE ASKED TO DANCE AT THE PARTY.

I KNOW HOW YOU FELT SOMETIMES YOU GO TO PARTIES AND YOU SEE THAT WOMEN ON ONE SIDE AND THE MEN ON THE OTHER SIDE AND NOBODY IS REALLY DANCING.

BUT WHEN YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT INCLUSION, BEING ASKED TO THE DANCE, IS WHAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE.

[00:15:01]

ALL OF THAT BEING SAID WE GET TO THE PART ABOUT SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY.

WHAT WE INTEND TO DO IS PROVIDE PROGRAMS AND POLICIES THAT ENCOURAGE REPRESENTATION AND PARTICIPATION FOR DIVERSE GROUPS OF PEOPLE.

ALSO, ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF LIFE TO OUR DI AND SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS.

>> GREAT, THANK YOU.

DOCTOR MAY I'M ATTORNEY BACK TO YOU.

YOU TOUCHED ON THIS EARLIER BUT THE FIRST ONE REALLY IS AROUND WHAT IS THE ROLE COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITIES CAN AND SHOULD PLAY AN LEADING DISCOURSE AROUND SOCIAL RESPONSIBLY ISSUES BUT ESPECIALLY IN THE CONTEXT OF WHAT WE HAVE SEEN SO MUCH OVER THE LAST YEAR OR SO BETWEEN THE MURDER OF GEORGE FLOYD, THE ATTACKS ON THE U.S.

CAPITAL ON JANUARY 6.

THE DAC EIGHT RULING.

THE TAX ON THE ASIAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY.

CAN YOU PUT STATEMENTS OUT ABOUT THAT TO PUT A VOICE THERE, THE SECOND QUESTION IS WHAT YOU THINK IS IMPORTANT THAT OUR VOICES AND RESOURCES TO THESE EVENTS?

>> GREAT QUESTION.

OBVIOUSLY A LOT OF REASONS AROUND THAT WHY AS A DALLAS COLLEGE WE NEED TO BOTH HAVE A VOICE ESTABLISH THE EXAMPLE, PROVIDE LEADERSHIP AND UTILIZE SEVERAL THINGS THAT ARE UNIQUE TO US.

ONE, WE HAVE THE POWER TO CONVENE AND BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER IN WAYS THAT OTHER ORGANIZATIONS MAY NOT HAVE.

SECONDLY, WE GOT THE POWER OF PUTTING TOGETHER CURRICULUM AND ENFORCE CONTENT THAT CAN REALLY TELL THE STORY IN A TRUTHFUL WAY THAT MAKES IT CLEAR WHY THIS MATTERS.

THEN I THINK ALSO AS THE INSTITUTION THAT IS IN A COMMUNITY TO LEAD THAT WE CAN REALLY BE AN EXAMPLE THAT OTHERS CAN LOOK TO WITHIN THE LARGER COMMUNITY AS ONE THAT CAN HELP SET AN EXAMPLE.

WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT WE DO NOT KNOW IN MANY CASES.

SOME OF THIS IS UNFORTUNATE WHILE MANY HAVE LIVED SOME OF THE CHALLENGES RELATED TO RACIAL INJUSTICE.

I THINK AFTER THAT THAT PARTICULAR EVENT HOW WELCOME WERE THEY FEELING AT THAT POINT IN TIME.

HOW WERE THEY FEELING ABOUT PREPARING THEMSELVES FOR THE FUTURE.

WHAT DO THEY THINK ABOUT THE FUTURE NOT ONLY THEIR EDUCATION BUT OF WORK AND LIFE AND RAISING FAMILIES AND LIVING IN A SOCIETY.

THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT MATTER.

AS WE THINK ABOUT THE ROLE THAT WE PLAY, WE IMPACT NOT ONLY THE HERE AND NOW BUT WE IMPACT THE FUTURE.

BEING A PLACE WHERE INDIVIDUALS CANNOT ONLY FEEL SAFE WHEN THEY ARRIVE BUT EMPOWERED WHEN THEY LEAVE IS I THINK WHAT THE CULTURE THAT WE WANT TO CREATE.

>> SO MARISOL, LET ME TURN TO YOU AND ASK YOU, DO YOU FEEL LIKE THE CURRENT CLIMATE AIDS OR HINDERS OUR EFFORTS TO PROMOTE WITHIN DALLAS COLLEGE?

>> IT'S A DOUBLE-EDGED QUESTION BECAUSE IT ACTUALLY DOES BOTH.

IT HELPS IT AND IT HURTS IT.

IT HELPS IT IN THE WEIGHT THAT WHEN YOU HAVE SO MUCH INFORMATION OUT THERE THERE IS A LOT OF ATTENTION SO PEOPLE ARE PAYING ATTENTION AND LISTENING BUT THEN IT HINDERS IT BECAUSE WHAT ARE THEY HEARING? REMEMBER, EVERYBODY COMES FROM DIFFERENT PLACES, DIFFERENT FILTERS SO THAT COMMUNICATION THAT IS COMING THROUGH WHILE EVERYBODY IS HEARING THE SAME THING, PEOPLE ARE PERCEIVING IT FROM THEIR POINT OF VIEW.

SO IS THAT COMMUNICATION HELPING OR HURTING AND CONFUSING MORE THAN IT'S

[00:20:05]

HELPING? SO, IT DOES BOTH.

>> GREAT, THANK YOU.

DOCTOR CHAPMAN LET ME TURN TO YOU WITH THE NEXT QUESTION WE RECEIVED.

CAN YOU SHARE WITH US HOW DALLAS COLLEGE IS ELEVATING DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION ACROSS THE COLLEGE AND WHY IS IMPORTANT PART OF THE CULTURE WE ARE CREATING?

>> YEAH, SO I THINK THE IMPORTANT THING TO UNDERSTAND IS THAT WE ARE ALL ACCOUNTABLE TO EACH OTHER WE ARE ACCOUNTABLE AS A DALLAS COUNTY RESIDENTS AND THE STUDENTS THAT WE TEACH, THE ACCOUNTABILITY PIECE IS CRITICAL.

WE ARE THEN ABLE TO ELEVATE DEI ACROSS ALL AREAS.

WE WANT A BETTER DALLAS COLLEGE WHEN IN INCLUSIVE DALLAS COLLEGE WE WANT TO DALLAS COLLEGE THAT EVERYONE WANTS TO COME TO, STUDENTS FACULTY AND STAFF, WE ALL WANT A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE.

PART OF THAT IS IN MOSS WORKING WITH ALL AREAS, HR, PROVOST, WORKING WITH FACULTY, STUDENT SERVICES, THAT'S HOW WE ELEVATE THE DEI ACROSS THE WHOLE AREA.

A BETTER ANALOGY IS RIDING ON A PLANE WHEN YOU'RE SITTING BY THE EXIT DOORS AND THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT ASKS ARE YOU COMFORTABLE IN AN EMERGENCY ASSISTING IF THAT WERE GONNA MOVE YOUR SEAT.

THEY WON'T KICK YOU OFF THE PLANE THEY WILL JUST MOVE YOUR SEAT.

SO WERE ON THE PLANE AND DALLAS COLLEGE HEADED SOMEWHERE SO IF YOU'RE NOT CONTROL WE WILL MOVE YOUR SEAT BUT WE WILL ALL GET THERE TOGETHER AND SAVE IT IN ONE PIECE.

>> GREAT ANALOGY, THANK YOU.

COUPLE QUESTIONS ABOUT DEI AND CURRICULUM FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE HOW ARE WE PLANNING TO INTEGRATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBLY AND EQUITY THINKING INTO ACADEMIC INSTRUCTION?

>> THANK YOU FOR THE QUESTION, FOR ME, I DON'T THINK IT SHOULD BE SOMETHING THAT WE SHOULD INTEGRATE IT SHOULD BE SEVEN THAT IS ALREADY THERE.

I THINK IF WE ARE TRYING TO WRITE IN THE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE THEN WE SHOULD BE MAKING SURE THAT WE ARE CONSISTENTLY CREATING OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE ON THE VARIOUS THINGS THAT AFFECT THE STUDENT DYNAMIC.

WE ARE TALKING ABOUT DOCTOR MAY TALK ABOUT BEING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HUMANS AND TO KIND TO ECHO THAT WE HAVE TO BE INTENTIONAL ABOUT MAKING SURE THAT WE ARE EXPECTING WHAT WE EXPECT.

SO IF WE SAY WE ARE ABOUT INTEGRATION OR DIVERSITY AND EQUITY AND INCLUSION WE HAVE TO ASK OURSELVES AS A COLLEGE SYSTEM WHO ARE WE ASKING THAT TO? WHO ARE WE INVITING TO BE PART OF THAT QUESTION? WHO ARE WE INVITING TO BE PART OF THE DANCE? ARE WE REALLY INTENTIONAL ABOUT VERIFYING THAT WERE GETTING THEIR INPUT.

ANOTHER THING WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE DOING INTENTIONALLY IS BEING TRANSPARENT ABOUT OUR PROCESSES.

WE HAVE A CONFLICTING THING GOING ON IN EDUCATION RIGHT NOW.

WE HAVE EDUCATORS BEEN ENCOURAGED TO SHARE AND ENGAGE ON DIFFERENT TOPICS OF CURRENT EVENTS AND THEN WE HAVE A LEGISLATIVE LEVEL EFFORTS TO CURTAIL THAT.

SO WE HAVE TO BE INTENTIONAL ABOUT WHAT WE ARE DOING IS DALLAS COLLEGE TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF PEOPLE.

THAT WE ARE INTENTIONALLY BEING, MAKING OUR STUDENTS, OUR EMPLOYEES AND OUR COMMUNITY AWARE OF WHAT WE ARE DOING TO COMBAT EFFORTS TO TAKE AWAY THE CONCEPT OF DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION IN A MEANINGFUL WAY.

I THINK THOSE ARE THINGS THAT WE HAVE TO BE MINDFUL OF.

I THINK AS AN EDUCATOR IT'S IMPORTANT FOR US TO MAKE SURE IT IS NOT JUST OUR PERSPECTIVE THAT IS BEING HEARD IN THE CLASSROOM.

THERE NEEDS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE HEARING FROM HIS STUDENTS AND IS IMPORTANT THAT WE ALSO MAKE SURE THAT STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS OKAY TO BE COMFORTABLE WITH THE UNCOMFORTABLE.

WE ARE NOT ALWAYS GOING TO SAY THINGS THAT ARE GOING TO MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD BUT PART OF GROWTH REQUIRES HAVING THAT UNCOMFORTABLE SITUATION SO THAT YOU CAN GROW FROM THAT.

>> I AM READY TO SIGN UP FOR YOUR CLASS.

YOU MENTIONED AUSTIN AND SOME OF THE LEGISLATIVE DISCUSSION LET ME ASK YOU ABOUT SOME OF THE QUESTIONS COMING UP ON THE LIVE CHAT BUT THE FOCUS IN AUSTIN AROUND THE DEI, HOW DO YOU THINK SOME OF THAT CONVERSATION OR PERHAPS ULTIMATELY DECISIONS THEY MAKE WILL IMPACT THE WORK THAT WE ARE DOING HERE?

[00:25:03]

>> YET, I AM ALWAYS CONCERNED ABOUT AUSTIN AND THE QUESTION THE DECISIONS THAT THEY MAKE.

IT REALLY, LET ME JUST BEAT TRANSPARENT, BIG BECAUSE IT BECOMES A LITTLE BIT SURREAL WHEN THE WORLD I LIVE IN IN DALLAS WILL HEAR DALLAS COLLEGE AND THE BROADER COMMUNITY, BOARDS I SERVE ON, REALLY CARE ABOUT EVERY MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY, REALLY CARE ABOUT INCLUSION, REALLY CARE ABOUT THE VOICES BEING HEARD.

AND PEOPLE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO VOTE AND EXPRESS THEIR OPINION.

IT IS HARD TO GET YOUR HEAD AROUND AND IT MANY CASES INDIVIDUALS THAT DON'T SEE THE WORLD THAT WAY.

THAT SOMEHOW SEAT PROVIDING INCLUSION AND OPPORTUNITY IS A THREAT.

AND SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE SILENCED AND SUPPRESSED.

BUT THANK GOODNESS THERE ARE LEADERS BEYOND EVEN HERE WITHIN DALLAS COLLEGE AND THE BROADER COMMUNITY AND THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY THAT UNDERSTAND THIS ISSUE.

SO WHILE ON ONE HAND THERE ARE CLEARLY INDIVIDUALS THAT WANT TO SUPPRESS AND LIMIT THESE CONVERSATIONS I AM ALWAYS ENCOURAGED BY HEARING AND SEEING FROM OTHERS THAT ARE SUPPORTING THE OPPORTUNITIES.

THE REACTION FROM OUR COMMUNITY, MANY OF YOU MAY NOT HAVE SEEN IT, IT HAS ESSENTIALLY BEEN HUGE.

WHERE'S SUDDENLY WE HAVE SEEN THE DALLAS REGIONAL CHAMBER NOT ONLY PUT IN FOR THE FIRST TIME AND EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION COMMITTEE AS AS SUCH BUT THEY HAVE HIRED A FULL-TIME VICE PRESIDENT THAT OVERSEES THAT AREA TO SUPPORT THE WORK.

WE HAVE SEEN THE NORTH TEXAS COMMISSION TO AN ALL-DAY WORKSHOP AROUND THIS TOPIC AND ENGAGING BUSINESS LEADERS AND OTHERS.

I KNOW JUSTIN, THAT WAS BEYOND THE QUESTION UP THERE BUT AS I LOOK AT IT I THINK WHAT I AM SAYING IS OUR INVOICE NEEDS TO BE CONTINUED OUT THERE.

EXACTLY WHAT PROFESSOR ELGRIE HURD WAS TALKING ABOUT.

WE PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE SOMETIMES WE DON'T SEAT THOSE VOICES LEVERAGED UNTIL YEARS FROM NOW BUT AS THEY ARE A PART OF THESE OTHER ORGANIZATIONS BUT THAT IS WHAT WE WANT, RIGHT? SOMETHING THAT WE KIND OF STRAP ON BUT REALLY IS PART OF NOT ONLY OUR CURRICULUM AND COURSEWORK BUT PART OF THE CLIMATE IN THE COMMUNITY IN WHICH WE LIVE.

>> LET ME TURN IT BACK TO YOU MARISOL.

WE TALKED A LOT ABOUT THE BARRIERS WE HAVE BEEN ELIMINATING THE PAST FEW YEARS, HOW IS DALLAS COLLEGE PLANNING ON PROVIDING EQUITABLE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ITS STUDENTS AND EMPLOYEES?

>> THERE ARE DIFFERENT WAYS IN TERMS OF THE STUDENTS THE EQUITABLE OPPORTUNITIES GO TO THE TRAINING THAT IS PROVIDED, THE RESOURCES THAT ARE PROVIDED AND DOCTOR CHAPMAN TALKED ABOUT COLLABORATIONS, INTERNAL COLLABORATIONS AND WORKING WITH OTHER UNITS WITHIN THE COLLEGE WE WILL BE ABLE TO PROVIDE THE MESSAGE, THE LEARNING, THE RESOURCES IN ADDITION TO HAVING THEM POSTED ON THE WEBSITE FOR STUDENTS TO BE ABLE TO FIND THEM UP FOR EMPLOYEES TO BE ABLE TO FIND IT.

DOCTOR CHAPMAN WILL ALSO BE TALKING ABOUT THE EMPLOYEE RESOURCE GROUPS SO I DO NOT WANT TO TAKE HIS A PUNCHLINE AWAY BUT THAT WOULD BE A GREAT WAY FOR US TO BE ABLE TO PROVIDE THAT CONNECTION TO THE EMPLOYEE.

>> LET'S TURN TO THAT DOCTOR CHAPMAN BECAUSE WE HAVE HAD A COUPLE QUESTIONS COME IN AROUND THAT.

CAN YOU SHARE MORE INSIGHT ON THE ROLE OF OUR ERG'S AND HOW INTERESTED EMPLOYEES CAN JOIN?

>> SO ERG'S AND DEI WORK, THE FUN THING ABOUT MOSS IN DALLAS COLLEGE IS YOU GET TO MEET THE EMPLOYEES OF DALLAS COLLEGE SO WE HAVE FIVE ERG'S FOR THOSE WHO DON'T

[00:30:03]

KNOW.

THE ONE THAT PRIVATELY SERVES ARE LATINO, AFRICAN AMERICAN ERG, LGBTQ+ ERG AND WOMEN ERG, THERE ARE MORE TO COME IN THE FUTURE.

IF YOU JUST TYPE IN ERG OR EMPLOYEE RESOURCE GROUPS IT WILL PULL YOU UP TO THE ERG LANDING PAGE AND YOU'RE ABLE TO FIND ALL THE ERG'S.

EMPLOYEES ARE ALLOWED TO MEMBERSHIPS.

SO WE GAVE FLEXIBILITY THERE BECAUSE THERE MAY BE MORE THAN ONE THERE INTERESTED IN.

THERE ARE VIP STATUS, I WILL ENCOURAGE A PLACE TO FIND A GROUP, THOSE ARE SPACES WERE TRYING TO CREATE WHERE INTENTIONAL DEVELOPMENT WHERE YOU CAN BE WITH LIKE-MINDED PROFESSIONAL INDIVIDUALS.

A PLACE THAT YOU CAN GO TO DEVELOP YOURSELF PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY.

SHOUT OUT TO OUR ERG LEADERSHIP THEY HAVE BEEN PATIENT WITH US AS WE RESTRUCTURE TO GET EVERYBODY ON THE SAME OPERATING GUIDELINES THEY HAVE BEEN PATIENT SO I ANTICIPATE VERY SOON BREAKING OUT THE ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPER AND OPPORTUNITIES AND ACTIVITIES SO YOU CAN SEE A STRONG PRESENCE OF THE ERG.

I TOLD THE BOARD THIS AND I WILL SHARE IT AS WELL IF YOU HAVEN'T HEARD, NATIONALLY ERG ENGAGEMENT FOR CORPORATION OR AN INSTITUTION IS AT 4.3 PERCENT, DALLAS COLLEGE WE ARE AT SEVEN PERCENT.

SO WE ARE ABOVE AVERAGE.

THAT MEANS OUR EMPLOYEES WANTED AND THEY ARE ENGAGED AND WE EXPECTED TO GO HIGHER.

SO AGAIN, FIND THE ERG OF YOUR CHOICE.

PLEASE ADDRESS CHURCH QUESTIONS TOWARDS ME, YOU CAN FIND ME AND I CAN ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS.

>> I WOULD LIKE TO ADD ONE MORE THING TO THAT.

THAT IS ON THE HR PART WE ARE COLLABORATING WITH HR AND ARE PROVIDING SOME INSIGHT AND SOME RESOURCES IN TERMS OF LOCAL, DIVERSE ORGANIZATIONS THAT NOT ONLY WILL HELP US BRING IN TARGETED, DIVERSE, TO HAVE OUR OWN INTERNAL RECRUITMENT BUT ALSO A SPECIFIC PROGRAM AND IN THIS CASE THAT ALSO PROVIDES A DIVERSE POOL OF CANDIDATES THAT WE CAN LOOK THROUGH AND CAN SELECT.

IN ADDITION TO THOSE SAME ORGANIZATIONS WILL OFFER SOME DEVELOPMENT THAT WE INTEND TO MAKE AVAILABLE TO OUR EMPLOYEES.

>> GREAT, THANKS.

LET ME TURN TO SUSTAINABILITY.

GEORGIANA YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING PATIENTLY, WE DO HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY.

SOME PEOPLE MAY NOT EQUATE SUSTAINABILITY WITH SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY, SHARE WITH US WHY YOU THINK THAT SUSTAINABILITY IS WITH A BROADER SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY.

>> I THINK SOME PEOPLE THINK THAT SUSTAINED ABILITY IS JUST ABOUT ENVIRONMENT COMMENTS ABOUT POLAR BEARS AND ENDANGERED SPECIES, BUT IS REALLY MUCH, MUCH BROADER THAN THAT.

THERE ARE THREE MAIN PILLARS OF ASSISTING ABILITY.

EQUITY, ECONOMY AND THE ENVIRONMENT.

ALL THREE OF THOSE ARE INTERCONNECTED.

YOU CANNOT HAVE A HEALTHY ECONOMY IF YOU DON'T HAVE A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT.

YOU CAN'T HAVE A HEALTHY SOCIETY IF YOU DON'T HAVE A EQUITY.

ALL THREE OF THOSE THINGS ARE IMPORTANT.

SUSTAINABILITY IN HIGHER EDUCATION WE CALL SUSTAINABILITY, JUST THAT.

BUT IN THE BUSINESS WORLD THEY CALL IT THE TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE, THE COLORED PEOPLE, PLANET, PROSPERITY.

THE COLOR ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIAL GOVERNANCE SO YOU CAN SEE THAT ALL OF THOSE THINGS ARE INTERTWINED AND ALL THREE ARE VERY IMPORTANT AND DESERVES OUR ATTENTION.

>> LOOKS LIKE WE WILL CONTINUE ON, THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, APPROVED A CONTRACT WITH A COMMITMENT TO RENEWABLE ENERGIES.

HOW DOES THAT DECISION IMPACT DALLAS COLLEGES COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY?

>> IT'S A FANTASTIC STEP, A HUGE STEP IN OUR JOURNEY TOWARDS A SUSTAINABILITY.

THAT ONE DECISION WILL HELP US AVOID PUTTING 30,000 TONS OF GREENHOUSE GASES INTO THE ENVIRONMENT EVERY YEAR.

SO THAT IS A HUGE, HUGE STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

WE ARE VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

THAT SAID, WE CANNOT REST ON OUR LAURELS WE STILL NEED TO DO ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS WE CAN DO WHICH IS REDUCE OUR ENERGY CONSUMPTION.

THERE IS A NEW PHRASE OUT THAT THE NEW FUEL IS ENERGY EFFICIENCY.

[00:35:06]

WE ARE VERY, VERY HAPPY THAT WE HAVE TWO LEADERS HERE IN DALLAS COLLEGE, SCOTT WRIGHT AND GARRETT FOSTER, WHO ARE LEADING A BRAND-NEW ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAMS. WE WILL BE SAVING MUCH, MUCH MORE ENERGY AND THE ENERGY WILL BE USING IS RENEWABLE AND THAT'S GREAT BUT WE WILL ALSO BE REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF ENERGY THAT WE USE.

THE OTHER THING WE NEED TO DO IS WHEN WERE BUILDING NEW BUILDINGS OR RENOVATING EXISTING BUILDINGS WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE HIGH PERFORMANCE BUILDINGS AND THAT THEY USE THE LEAST AMOUNT OF ENERGY AS POSSIBLE.

MY PERSONAL GOAL IS THAT I'M HOPING THAT THEY WILL ALL BE NET ZERO ENERGY READY WHICH MEANS THAT WHEN THE TIME COMES AND WHEN IT THERE IS ENERGY EFFICIENT AS POSSIBLE THAT WE COULD PUT SOLAR PANELS ON TOP OF THOSE SO THE BUILDING WILL GENERATE AS MUCH ENERGY AS IT ACTUALLY USES.

>> GEORGIANA, LET ME STICK WITH YOU FOR A MINUTE.

SHIFTING FROM THE ORGANIZATIONAL SIDE INTO THE STUDENT SIDE, HOW WE ARE ENGAGING OUR STUDENTS AND THEN THE LARGER COMMUNITY AROUND US ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY AND HOW IT IMPACTS US ON A DAILY BASIS?

>> WE HAVE A PROGRAM CALLED SUSTAINABLE YOU AND THAT'S KIND OF A PLAY ON WORDS.

IT COULD BE SUSTAINABLE UNIVERSITY IT COULD BE CHARACTERIZES SUSTAINABLE HUMAN BEING SO WE HAVE A WEEKLY WEBINARS.

THERE IS ONE TODAY AT 12 O'CLOCK IF ANYONE WAS TO SIGN UP FOR IT.

WE HAVE WEEKLY WEBINARS THAT ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND THOSE ARE OPEN TO OUR STUDENTS AND EMPLOYEES AS WELL.

THEY COVER ALL THREE AREAS, EQUITY, ENVIRONMENT AND THEY COVER THE ECONOMY.

WE OFTEN HAVE EMPLOYEES HERE, DOCTOR CHAPMAN AND DOCTOR HURD HAVE BEEN ON OUR SUSTAINABLE YOU WEBINARS TO TALK ABOUT DIVERSITY ISSUES BUT SOMETIMES WE TALK ABOUT THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING IN THE COMMUNITY LIKE TODAY WE ARE TALKING ABOUT BIKEWAYS AND TRAILS BECAUSE AGAIN IT THOSE ARE VERY SUSTAINABLE.

THE MORE PEOPLE THAT TAKE THE BIKES THE LESS CARS WE HAVE ON THE STREETS AND THE BETTER OFF WE ARE.

THAT IS JUST ONE OF OUR PROGRAMS. WE ALSO HAVE A SUSTAINABILITY SUMMIT EVERY YEAR IN NOVEMBER.

THAT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND IF YOU WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE PROGRAMS WE HAVE YOU GOOD OUR WEBSITE DEBBIE DEBBIE DEBBIE.DALLAS COLLEGE.EDU /SUSTAINABILITY.

THE SECOND PROGRAM WE HAVE IS CALLED REFRAMING THE CURRICULUM.

THAT IS A PROGRAM WE ARE SHOWING FACULTY MEMBERS HOW TO INFUSE SUSTAINABILITY INTO EVERY SINGLE COURSE ACROSS THE COLLEGE.

THERE MAY BE SOME PEOPLE THAT SAY THAT SUSTAINABILITY DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH WHAT I TEACH AND I WOULD SAY IF YOU FEEL THAT WAY GIVE ME A CALL AND WE WILL TALK ABOUT IT.

I'VE YET TO FIND ONE COURSE THAT DOES NOT HAVE SOME ASPECTS OF SUSTAINABILITY RELATED TO IT.

WE HAVE PILOTED THIS COURSE ABOUT TWO OR THREE TIMES SO FAR.

LAURA DELACRUZ LEWIS SHE IS LEADING IT.

SHE IS GETTING RAVE REVIEWS.

THE NEXT ONE STARTS JUNE 3.

I WOULD ENCOURAGE ALL FACULTY MEMBERS WHO WANT TO LEARN HOW TO INFUSE SUSTAINABILITY AND OF THE 17 SUSTAINABLE GOALS INTO THEIR CURRICULUM - - BASICALLY DIALOGUES THERE IS AN ORGANIZATION THAT WE ARE WORKING WITH A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT IS GOING TO TEACH US HOW TO HAVE IT REFLECTIVE, STRUCTURED DIALOGUES.

THIS IS NOT WITH THE INTENTION OF TRYING TO CHANGE PEOPLE'S MINDS, IT'S NOT WITH THE INTENTION OF TRYING TO MEET YOUR AGENDA, THIS IS TRULY OPENING UP A SPACE THEY CALL IT HAVING A SPACE FOR COMPLEXITY BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT PEOPLE, EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT THEY ALL COME TO THEIR OPINIONS AND ATTITUDES FROM DIFFERENT AVENUES AND ONCE WE REALLY SIT DOWN AND START TALKING TO THEM AND LEARNING ABOUT THEM THEN WE UNDERSTAND THAT MOST EVERYBODY OUT THERE IS JUST LIKE US, THEY CARE VERY MUCH ABOUT THEIR COMMUNITY AND THEY CARE VERY MUCH ABOUT BUILDING A WORLD THAT WORKS FOR EVERYONE.

THE MORE WE CAN TALK AND WHAT HAPPENS IS WHEN YOU HAVE THAT IT REDUCES POLARIZATION.

IT MAKES IT EASIER FOR US TO HAVE THOSE CRUCIAL CONVERSATIONS THAT WE NEED

[00:40:04]

TO HAVE A.

THAT IS COMING UP IN THE FALL.

AND THEN THE LAST THING I WANT TO TALK ABOUT IS A TOOL THAT WE ARE TEACHING STUDENTS IS CALLED SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS.

ANYBODY WHO WATCHED THE BOARD MEETING SAW SOME OF THOSE SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS THAT WE TALKED ABOUT AND IT'S A TOOL WHERE WE ASK PEOPLE NOT JUST STUDENTS, ALSO EMPLOYEES, IF YOU HAVE A CHALLENGE OR ISSUE OR PROBLEM YOU ARE TRYING TO SOLVE ASK YOURSELF THREE QUESTIONS.

IS THIS SOLUTION GOOD FOR PEOPLE? IS IT GOOD FOR THE PLANET? IS A GOOD FOR OUR PROSPERITY? IF YOU ANSWER TO ANY OF THE QUESTIONS IS NO THEN YOU GO BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD AND KEEP WORKING UNTIL YOU CAN ANSWER YES TO EVERY ONE OF THOSE QUESTIONS.

COMING BACK FULL-CIRCLE I AM SO PROUD TO SAY THAT OUR BOARD CHOSE EIGHT SOLUTION WITH THE RENEWABLE ENERGY ELECTRICITY CONTRACT THAT WE CAN ANSWER YES TO ALL THREE OF THOSE QUESTIONS.

SO, IT'S A SIMPLE TOOL BUT IT IS ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT'S A SIMPLE TAKE AWAY THAT THEY CAN USE FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES.

AND MY SUPERVISOR MARISOL SAYS EVER SINCE WE STARTED DISCUSSING THIS THAT NOW SHE THINGS ABOUT THAT EVERY TIME SHE IS WORKING ON A SOLUTION SHE ASKS HERSELF THOSE THREE QUESTIONS.

>> SHE CALLED ME OUT.

>> IF, OFTENTIMES I GET THE QUESTION WHY SUSTAINABILITY AND DEI TOGETHER.

IN LAYMAN'S TERMS BASICALLY THE SAME AS FOR THE PLANET AND SOCIAL JUSTICE IS FOR US.

EVERYBODY WISHES THEY JUST TURN THE KEY INCOME IS ULTRA INCLUSIVE INSTITUTION TOMORROW BUT WE WANT TO BUILD SUSTAINABLE SO FOR THE NEXT 20 OR 30 OR 50 YEARS WE WANT TO DO THE WORK AND THAT WAY IT'S ALREADY IN PLACE SO THAT WHOEVER, HOWEVER THEY IDENTIFY IT, WE HAVE INCLUSIVE POLICIES AND PRACTICES IN PLACE THAT ARE SUSTAINABLE OVER TIME.

THAT IS WHAT SUSTAINABILITY AND MOSS COME TOGETHER.

THEY COME IN HAND-IN-HAND TO DO THE WORK STRATEGICALLY AND SUSTAINABLE SO I JUST WANTED TO THAT BECAUSE THERE'S A LOT OF CONFUSION OUT THERE.

WHY IS THE GREEN STUFF WITHOUT THE SOCIAL JUSTICE STUFF? IT'S PEOPLE STUFF.

IF YOU DON'T HAVE A PLANET THAN THE PEOPLE STUFF IS FOR NOT.

SOMETHING FOR LONNIE TO INTERJECT.

>> I WOULD LIKE TO SAY ONE OTHER THING, THE UNITED NATIONS DEFINITION OF SUSTAINABILITY IS MEETING THE NEEDS OF THE CURRENT GENERATION WITHOUT COMPROMISING THE ABILITY OF FUTURE GENERATIONS TO MEET THEIRS.

TO ME, THAT IS ANOTHER DEFINITION FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY.

>> GREAT, GREAT CONVERSATION.

MARISOL LET ME TURN BACK TO YOU FOR MINUTE.

THE PREVIOUS QUESTION WE TALKED A LOT ABOUT THE COMMUNITY AND DOCTOR MAY REFERENCED EARLIER OUR ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITY AND AT THE COMMUNITY AND YOU TOUCHED ON SOME OF THIS A LITTLE BIT EARLIER.

WHAT ROLE ARE WE PLAYING IN OUR COMMUNITY TO PROMOTE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND INCLUSION? BEYOND THE BORDERS OF OUR CAMPUSES.

>> DOCTOR CHAPMAN SPOKE ABOUT INTERNAL COLLABORATIONS AND THIS GOES TO EXTERNAL COLLABORATIONS.

WHO ARE WE COLLABORATING WITH OUT THERE? WE ARE COLLABORATING WITH OTHER COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES AND ALSO WITH DIVERSE ORGANIZATIONS IN THE COMMUNITY.

ONE COLLABORATION THAT IS ACTUALLY COMING UP MAY 27, JUNE 3, JUNE 10 IS A FORM THAT WILL BE CALLED CANDID CROSS-CULTURAL CONVERSATIONS.

THAT'S A COLLABORATION THAT DALLAS COLLEGE CURRENTLY HEADS WITH UNC DALLAS.

WE WILL POSTED ON OUR WEBPAGE AND ALSO OUR MARKETING AND SEE THE FLYER AND HOPEFULLY GET TO ENJOY THAT CULTURAL CONVERSATION.

GEORGEANNE ALSO MENTIONED THAT WE HAVE SUSTAINABLE U WEBINAR AND TRAINING AS PART OF THE SUSTAINABILITY UMBRELLA.

WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO LOOK AT THE WEBSITE AND SIGN UP FOR ANY OF THE WEBINARS, ANY OF THE CONVERSATIONS THAT WE MENTIONED AND ENGAGE IN THE DIALOGUE.

PARTICIPATE.

BE AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF OUR COMMUNITY NOT JUST EXTERNALLY AND INTERNALLY BUT ALSO EVEN AT HOME.

THINK ABOUT THIS TOPIC, LIKE A GEORGEANNE MENTIONED, TOUCH UPON THREE AREAS AND THOSE SOLUTIONS REALLY CAN BE USED IN YOUR JOBS, IN YOUR DAILY LIVES WHETHER YOU

[00:45:02]

ARE AT WORK, IN YOUR COMMUNITY OR AT HOME.

>> GREAT, THANKS.

WE ARE GETTING ALL KINDS OF GREAT LIVE QUESTIONS COMING UP.

I'M GOING TO TURN TO THE GROUP HERE AS I POSE ONE OF THESE QUESTIONS I CAME IN.

WHAT RECOMMENDATIONS OR AT WORK IS NEEDED TO IDENTIFY AND CHALLENGE ONE'S OWN COMPLICIT OR IMPLICIT BIASES?

>> I WILL TAKE THAT ONE.

FROM MY PERSPECTIVE YOU HAVE TO BE AWARE AS WE KNOW THAT BIAS WE ALL HAVE IT NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE.

WE CAN CALL IT WHAT IT IS UNTIL WE ACCEPT IT FOR WHAT IT IS.

WE NEED THAT AWARENESS PIECE THAT'S THE FIRST STEP.

ONCE YOU'RE AWARE THAT YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT AND NAVIGATE THE DIFFERENCES.

AWARENESS IS KEY WHETHER THAT IS READING OR YOUTUBE VIDEOS OR WHATEVER IT IS, TECHNOLOGY IS AT OUR FINGERTIPS.

BE AWARE THAT YOU HOLD THE BIAS AND THEN YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

>> AFTER THAT, I WOULD SAY ASK QUESTIONS.

ASK QUESTIONS FROM A GOOD PLACE.

ASK QUESTIONS BECAUSE YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW HOW TO BEST COMMUNICATE WITH THAT COLLEAGUE, WITH THAT STUDENT, WITH THAT COMMUNITY MEMBER.

BE INFORMED AND THEN MORE THAN ANYTHING KNOW YOUR FILTERS.

WHERE ARE YOU COMING FROM.

ARE YOU COMING FROM THE SIDE OF FAMILY, THE SITE OF YOUR SOCIAL UPBRINGING, ARE YOU COMING FROM THE SIDE OF YOUR PROFESSIONAL, ARE YOU COMING FROM THE SIDE OF YOU ARE A STUDENT.

YOUR FILTERS AND WHEN YOU ARE HEARING INFORMATION ARE YOU REACTING OR ARE YOU COMMUNICATING? SO START THINKING THOSE THOUGHTS.

>> TO BUILD ON THOSE TWO THINGS THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN SHARED ONCE YOU HAVE THE AWARENESS, ONCE YOU ARE ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS THE NEXT THING IS WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO? WE CAN TALK ABOUT THINKING AND HAVING THE RIGHT FEELINGS UNTIL WE ARE TIRED.

THE NEXT STEP IS TAKING OWNERSHIP OF THE OUTCOME.

WE ALL PLAY A PART IN HOW TO MAKE THIS WORLD A BETTER.

WE NEED TO MAKE IT BETTER THAN WHEN WE GOT IT.

WE HAVE TO BE INTENTIONAL ABOUT ASKING OURSELVES HERE IS MY BIAS, HERE ARE THE QUESTIONS I HAVE RUN MY BIAS, HOW ARE THEY AFFECTING PEOPLE NOW WHAT AM I GOING TO DO ABOUT IT? WHAT AM I GONNA DO ABOUT IT AS RELATES TO HOW MY BIAS HINDER OTHER PEOPLE'S SUCCESS? HOW MY BIAS HINDER COLLABORATIONS AND PARTNERSHIPS WITH OTHERS.

HOW MY BIAS ALLOWS ME NOT TO BE EMPATHETIC TO THE CIRCUMSTANCES OR THE PERSPECTIVE OF SOMEONE THAT'S NOT MY OWN.

>> RIGHT, THANK YOU.

WE HAVE A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS AROUND TRAINING.

AS A LIMIT START WITH YOU DOCTOR CHAPMAN, DEI AND RELATED ACTIVITIES?

>> ABSOLUTELY, TRAINING IS A BIG PIECE WE DO DEI TRAINING.

OUR MINDSET IS NOT JUST FLESH PAINTED JUST ANOTHER LECTURE, ANOTHER VIDEO, ANOTHER QUIZ THEY JUST CLICK THROUGH THE ANSWERS, WE WANT SOMETHING THAT HAS IMPACT.

WE ARE LOOKING AT VENDORS RIGHT NOW TO PROVIDE SOME TRUE, IMPACTFUL TRAINING AROUND STEREOTYPES.

SOME OTHER INSTITUTIONS USE THAT THERE'S ANOTHER ONE ABOUT BIAS.

WE ARE LOOKING AT IS MAKE SURE THE TRAINING WE PROVIDE IS ACTUALLY IMPACTFUL AND ACTUALLY RELATES TO THE INDIVIDUAL.

NOT HIGH-LEVEL TRAINING TO WHERE, SORRENTO SPECIALIZES WELL, WHATEVER AREA YOU'RE IN WE CAN UNDERSTAND HOW DEI APPLIES TO PARTICULAR ROLE THAT YOU DO.

AND THEN EXPAND IT.

IF WORKING WITH HR, WORKING WITH STUDENT LIFE PARTNERS AND STUDENT TRAINING AS WELL.

THE NEXT FEW WEEKS WE WILL SEE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES COME OUT AND THERE BE A MULTITUDE OF METHODS ONLINE AND AS YOU COME BACK IN PERSON IT WILL BE IN PERSON AS WELL.

THE KEY IS WE WANT IMPACTFUL NOT TO JUST SIT THERE ANOTHER TRAINING AND CHECK THE BOX THAT SAYS YOU HEARD SOME THINGS WE ONE APPLICATION OF THE KNOWLEDGE THAT YOU RECEIVED BECAUSE IGNORANCE IS NOT LACK OF KNOWLEDGE BUT LACK OF DECENT KNOWLEDGE.

>> IF I MAY ADD TO THAT THE TRAINING WILL BE PROVIDING YOU THE HOW TO.

TO DOCTOR HURD'S POINT WE COULD TALK ABOUT THINGS ALL DAY LONG BUT WE NEED TO PROVIDE SOLUTIONS SO HOW DO YOU DO IT? HOW DO YOU HAVE THOSE MANY PHONE CONVERSATIONS? HOW DO YOU CREATE THAT POSITIVE IMPACT? THAT HOW TO, IT'S REALLY GOING TO BE THE KEY TO THE TRAINING.

[00:50:05]

>> PERFECTER HURD I AM CURIOUS YOUR PERSPECTIVE HOW YOU THINK THEY DEI TRAINING THAT DOCTOR CHAPMAN AND MARISOL JUST DESCRIBED CAN IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION FOR OUR STUDENTS?

>> I THINK IS A GOOD STARTING POINT.

AT THAT WE HAVE TO RECOGNIZE THAT THAT EVERYONE IS AT A DIFFERENT PLACE.

I THINK HAVING THOSE TRAININGS AVAILABLE IS IMPORTANT.

I THINK YOU WANT TO CONTINUE TO ENHANCE IT HAS TO BE AVAILABLE NOT ONLY TO ALL THE EMPLOYEES, WE WANT TO ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO BE PART OF THOSE CONVERSATIONS BECAUSE OUR STUDENTS ARE REPRESENTATIVE OF DALLAS COLLEGE.

WE WANT TO PUT THEM AS WELL TO BE ABLE TO GO INTO THE COMMUNITY AND GO WITH THEIR FAMILIES AND BE ABLE TO BEAT THAT SPHERE OF INFLUENCE TO BE MORE AWARE OF THINGS.

I THINK IS THE DEI TRAINING CONTINUES TO INVOLVE THE HOPE IS THAT HOW IT HELPS IS THAT IT CONNECTS TO LOCAL THINGS.

SOME OF THE CHALLENGES WE HAVE ABOUT DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION WE TALK ABOUT NATIONAL THINGS AND WE DON'T TALK ABOUT LOCAL THINGS.

IT IS IMPORTANT AS WE TALK ABOUT THINGS LIKE GEORGE FLOYD WE HAVE TO TALK ABOUT MRS. JEFFERSON IN FORT WORTH.

WE HAVE TALKED ABOUT THINGS THAT HAPPEN IN A DALLAS COUNTY THAT HAPPENED IN COLLIN COUNTY THAT ARE CURRENTLY HAPPENING BECAUSE WHAT WE WANT STUDENTS AND EMPLOYEES TO KNOW IS THAT WE CARE ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON LOCALLY.

WHATEVER TRAINING WE PUT FORWARD WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT WE CONNECT TO THE LOCAL ASPECT OF IT.

IF WE DON'T DO THE LOCAL ASPECT OF IT WILL GIVE THE IMPRESSION OF ONE OR TWO THINGS.

ONE THAT THERE ARE NO ISSUES IN DALLAS COUNTY, WE KNOW THAT NOT TO BE TRUE.

OR TWO, THAT THE ISSUES THAT ARE GOING ON IN DALLAS COUNTY AREN'T REALLY RELEVANT TO THE DIVERSITY CONVERSATIONS, THE EQUITY CONVERSATIONS, THE INCLUSION CONVERSATION THAT WE ARE HAVING.

WE KNOW THAT IS ALSO NOT TRUE.

WE HAVE TO BE INTENTIONAL ABOUT CONNECTING THOSE DOTS VERY INTENTIONALLY BECAUSE FOR THOSE WHO ARE NEW TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION CONVERSATION IT IS EASY FOR THEM TO NOT TO CONNECT IT TO THE LOCAL ISSUES.

>> GREAT, I'M GOING TO TURN TO ONE OF THE LIVE QUESTIONS AND I WILL JUST TURN TO THE PANEL FOR ANYONE THAT WANTS TO WEIGH IN ON THIS.

WE RARELY DISCUSS AGEISM SO HOW IS DALLAS COLLEGE ADDRESSING THE CONCERNS OF AGEISM AND HOW IT IMPACTS OUR STUDENTS AND FACULTY?

>> I LOVE THIS QUESTION.

I THINK IT IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE FORGET ABOUT.

FOR ME, IT'S A PERSONAL STORY OF SEEN MY FATHER APPLYING FOR JOBS AS HE GOT OLDER AND BEING DENIED OPPORTUNITIES.

AND NOT WANTING TO RECOGNIZE HIS WORK EXPERIENCE ABOUT WANTING HIS WORK EXPERIENCE FOR THAT PARTICULAR ORGANIZATION.

I THINK WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT, THE CONCEPT OF AGES AND BEEN DISCREDITED ON BASIS OF AGE, I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE BE VERY INTENTIONAL ABOUT MAKING ACCESSIBILITY FOR EVERYONE AND TO DO THAT WELL WE HAVE TO INTENTIONALLY ASK PEOPLE WHO ARE TYPICALLY DISCRIMINATED BASED ON AGE, WHAT ARE YOUR NEEDS? HOW CAN WE BE MORE SUPPORTIVE? WE TALK ABOUT THE IDEA OF STUDENTS WHO ARE ENTERING COLLEGE FOR THE FIRST TIME, WE FORGET THAT THAT AGE CAN BE 14 TO 105 AND WE CANNOT ASSUME THAT ALL THE NEEDS OF THOSE INCOMING STUDENTS WE HAVE ARE GOING TO BE THE SAME.

I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WHEN WE ARE TALKING ABOUT EXAMPLES THAT WE ARE GIVING A BROADER EXPERIENCE NOT JUST FOR THE 18 TO 25, NOT JUST FOR THE 25 TO 40 BUT THAT WERE INCLUDING EVERYBODY'S EXPERIENCES BECAUSE THAT MATTERS.

PEOPLE ARE GOING TO SCHOOL LATER.

PEOPLE ARE HAVING DIFFERENT THINGS, PEOPLE ARE HAVING CHILDREN IN THEIR 60S THROUGH NATURAL CHILDBIRTH.

THESE ARE THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING AND I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE ARE VERY INTENTIONAL ABOUT BEING INCLUSIVE AND VERY INTENTIONAL ABOUT NOT ASSUMING BECAUSE OF SOMEONE'S AGE WE KNOW THEIR STORY.

BECAUSE THEIR AGE WE ARE EXCLUDING THEM FROM CONVERSATIONS.

THAT HAS TO BE VERY INTENTIONAL AND HAS BEEN ONGOING THINK BECAUSE WE CONTINUE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT AGEISM, WE ARE LEARNING THAT WE JUST DON'T KNOW AS WE THOUGHT WE DID.

>> THANK YOU, WE ONLY HAVE A FEW MINUTES REMAINING SO WE WILL HIT A FEW QUESTIONS.

MARISOL, AND DOCTOR MAY YOU MAY HAVE PERSPECTIVE, YOU WILL REPRESENT EARLIER THIS IS A LONG-TERM EFFORT FOR US.

MARISOL, YOU TALK TO LIMIT ABOUT THIS AT THE BOARD MEETING, SHARE WITH US HOW WE ARE PLANNING TO MEASURE PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENT IN THIS SPACE SO CENTERS THAT WERE TALKING ABOUT IT BUT HOW ARE WE ENSURING THAT WE ARE ACTUALLY MAKING

[00:55:06]

MEANINGFUL AND IMPACT WILL CHANGE?

>> THERE ARE SPECIFIC TRACKING MECHANISMS FOR EACH AREAS SO IN TERMS OF SUSTAINABILITY WE ARE USING THE SUSTAINABILITY TRACKING ASSESSMENT AND RATING SYSTEM.

THAT COMES FROM THE ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SUSTAINABILITY IN HIGHER EDUCATION.

FOR THIS PARTICULAR MEASUREMENT TOOL IT REALLY MEASURES THINGS LIKE THE 17 SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPING GOALS AND OTHER SUITABILITY GOALS.

BUT WHAT DOES IT MEASURE WITHIN THAT? IT MEASURES THINGS LIKE IN ACADEMICS AND OPERATIONS AND ENGAGEMENT PLANNING AND ADMINISTRATION, INNOVATION AND LEADERSHIP.

THE SAME THING WITH DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION WHERE WE ARE USING A TOOL CALLED DEI MATURITY INDEX.

THAT PARTICULAR TOOL COMES FROM THE COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR HUMAN RESOURCES.

IN THE CASE OF THAT TOOL IT REALLY HELPS US IN PARTICULAR BECAUSE WE ARE HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION TAKE MEANINGFUL STEPS TO DEVELOP OUR DEI EFFORTS AROUND STAFF AND FACULTY.

SO WHAT IS A MEASURE? IN THIS CASE, IT ALSO MEASURES OF FIVE THINGS.

IT MEASURES ASSESSMENT, CULTURE, INVESTMENT IN INFRASTRUCTURE, RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION, COMMUNICATION AND EDUCATION.

OUR GOAL REALLY REVOLVE AROUND MAKING SURE THAT WE ARE ABLE TO NOT ONLY PROVIDE PROCESSES, POLICIES AND RESOURCES BUT THAT WE ARE MEASURING OUR GROWTH, OUR IMPROVEMENT AND THAT THOSE PROCESSES AND POLICIES BECOME MEANINGFUL TO THE COLLEGE.

>> GREAT, THANKS.

WE HAVE A COUPLE MINUTES LEFT LET ME GET A COUPLE QUESTIONS THAT HAVE COME IN.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT FOR PEOPLE LISTENING TO THIS CONVERSATION AND I WILL START WITH YOU DOCTOR MAY.

PEOPLE LISTENING TO THIS CONVERSATION TODAY THAT MAY STILL FEEL LIKE SOCIAL RESPONSIBLY AND INCLUSION DOESN'T APPLY TO THEM AND THAT THEIR VOICES ARE NOT NECESSARILY BEING HEARD, WHAT CAN THEY DO?

>> HONESTLY, I HAVE A TOUGH TIME REACTING TO THE QUESTION, FOLKS THAT DON'T THINK IT APPLIES TO THEM.

IT REALLY IS A PART OF ALL OF WHAT WE DO AS COMMUNITY COLLEGES.

IT'S REALLY ABOUT THE DAYS, I HAVE ASSURED BEFORE, I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET EARLY ON WHEN I CAME TO DALLAS WITH MARGARET MCDERMOTT ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF DALLAS COLLEGE WHO DESCRIBED THE REASON WHY SHE WENT DOOR-TO-DOOR TO HAVE THE PETITION TO SIGN TO CREATE THIS INSTITUTION AFTER IT HAD ALREADY BEEN TURNED DOWN TWICE.

THE REASON WHY SHE SAID IT WAS TURNED DOWN BECAUSE THERE WERE INDIVIDUALS THAT DID NOT THINK EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE OPPORTUNITIES.

THAT THERE WERE PEOPLE IN THIS COMMUNITY THAT SOME FELT SHOULD BE EXCLUDED FROM OPPORTUNITIES.

SO WE WERE FOUNDED ON THE VERY PRINCIPLES OF IT BEING INCLUDED TO CREATE OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL.

AND ALL MEANS ALL.

BUT IT MEANS THAT WE HAVE TO BE VERY FOCUSED IN TERMS OF HOW WE ENSURE THAT INDIVIDUALS THAT OTHERS THAT GROUPS FEEL THAT THEY ARE NOT ONLY INVITED AS WAS SHOWN EARLIER BUT ARE ALLOWED TO BE FULLY ENGAGED IN TERMS OF NOT ONLY THEIR EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPENSES BUT THE ABILITY TO TRANSLATE THAT INTO THE LARGER COMMUNITY SO I THINK THIS IS JUST SOMETHING AGAIN I GO BACK I DON'T KNOW HOW THIS IS SOMETHING THAT SOMEONE COULD THINK THAT THEY BY COMING HERE THAT THEY AREN'T A PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER FROM DAY ONE THAT IS WHY THEY'RE HERE, THAT'S WHY WE ARE ALL HERE.

TO HAVE THAT IMPACT AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

I GUESS IF YOU DON'T SEE IT HONESTLY I HAVE TO KIND OF QUESTION A LITTLE BIT MOTIVATION BEHIND WHITE YOU WOULD WANT TO BE PART OF THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

>> AS WE CLOSE OUT, MARISOL, LET ME ASK YOU AND ANYBODY ELSE ON THE PANEL THAT WANTS TO WEIGH IN, FOR PEOPLE LISTENING TO THIS CONVERSATION THAT WANT TO KNOW MORE AND WANT TO LEARN MORE.

ARE THERE SPECIFIC RESOURCES THAT YOU WANT TO DIRECT THEM TO?

>> YES, WE INVITE YOU TO LOOK INTO OUR WEBSITE AT DALLAS COLLEGE.EDU/SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY.

[01:00:01]

YOU CAN EMAIL US AT SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AT DCCD .

EDU.

WE NOW HAVE A YOUR VOICE LINE SO CALL US AND LET US KNOW WHAT YOUR THOUGHTS ARE, WHAT YOUR QUESTIONS ARE AND YOU CAN CALL US AT 972- 860- 7800.

GET INVOLVED, GOING TO THE WEBSITE, LOOKING AT WHAT HERITAGE EVENTS ARE LISTED, LOOK AT THE NEWS ARTICLES THAT ARE THERE.

GET INVOLVED AND GET EDUCATED WITH THE ARTICLES THAT WE HAVE.

>> GREAT, GREAT CONVERSATION AND WE APPRECIATE ALL THE QUESTIONS AND THE EXPERTISE OF OUR PANEL.

BEFORE WE CLOSE, DOCTOR MAY I WILL TURN TO YOU.

IF YOU LIVE QUESTIONS COME IN THAT WERE FOCUSED ON MASKS.

AND ESSENTIALLY THE QUESTION IS WHY DID WE MAKE THE CHANGE REGARDING MASKS AND WHITES REDO IT SO RAPIDLY TO IMPACT SUMMER AND THAT WHICH OF ALL?

>> GREAT QUESTION AND I APPRECIATE THAT FROM A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES.

WHAT WE SAID FROM DAY ONE THAT WE WOULD FOLLOW THE CDC GUIDELINES.

SO ALL ISSUES RELATED TO COVID 19 AND REALLY LISTEN TO THEM.

I WANT TO GO BACK TO MARCH OF 2020 WHEN WE MADE THE DECISION LITERALLY WITHIN ONE DAY THAT WE NEEDED TO TRANSITION REMOTELY.

THAT OUR COMMUNITY TRANSITION TO A WEARING MASKS AND TO SOCIAL DISTANCING IN ORDER TO MEET THAT NEED.

THAT WAS A CHANGE I DO NOT THINK WE WERE PREPARED TO DO.

WE ALSO HAD CHANGES ALONG WITH THAT UNATTENDED CONSEQUENT US.

WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION TODAY.

WHO WERE THOSE THAT WERE MOST NEGATIVELY IMPACTED BY THOSE RAPID CHANGES? THE SAME POPULATIONS THAT WE WANT TO SERVE AND ENSURE THAT THEY HAVE THESE OPPORTUNITIES.

SOME OF THE MOVING REMOTELY ACTUALLY IN ITSELF WAS DISCRIMINATORY NOT BY INTENT BY A DEFECTIVE INFRASTRUCTURE, FACT OF AS MENTIONED AGED, THAT HAD IMPACT ON WHO WAS ENGAGED.

WE WERE PREPARED WHEN THE CDC GAVE US THE GO-AHEAD THAT IT WAS SAFE WE KNEW THERE WERE INDIVIDUALS WAITING OUT THERE TO GET BACK ON OUR CAMPUSES, TO ENGAGE, BECAUSE THEY NEED THAT PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO THEM TO ENSURE THAT THEY HAVE THEIR EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FULFILLED AND ACHIEVED.

ALSO LET ME SAY SOMETHING ABOUT CHANGE.

THESE CAN CHANGE AGAIN.

WE ARE NOT ELIMINATING THE INFRASTRUCTURE THAT WE PUT IN PLACE TO MAKE SURE THAT IF WE NEED TO GO BACK TO SCREENING WE WILL DO IT.

IF THE CDC SAID IT'S TIME TO WEAR MASKS, I DON'T CARE IF IT'S FOR COVID OR THE FLU OR FOR WHAT THAT NEEDS ARE, WE WILL.

WE ARE ALWAYS GOING TO DO SO WITH HOW DO WE ENSURE THAT EVERYONE HAS OPPORTUNITY FOR THEIR EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE THAT IS THERE.

I UNDERSTAND SOME INDIVIDUALS MAYBE ARE NOT MENTALLY READY FOR THAT AS A SUCH BUT I THINK THE FACT IS WE ARE GOING TO HAVE MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES TO CHANGE AS WE CONTINUE THE YEAR.

I AM REMINDED OF A STATEMENT THAT WAS TOLD TO ME IN 1997, JOE, REMEMBER THE PACE OF CHANGE TODAY IS AS LOW AS IT WILL EVER BE.

THAT TURNED OUT TO BE TRUE.

I THINK WE WILL CONTINUE TO SEE RAPID CHANGE IN HEALTH AND HOW WE ENGAGE IN EDUCATION AND OUR OVERALL ENGAGEMENT IN THE COMMUNITY.

>> GREAT, THANK YOU THAT'S THE LAST OF OUR QUESTIONS.

AGAIN, I APPRECIATE EVERYONE SENDING THOSE IN.

THERE ARE SOME WE COULD NOT GET TO WE WILL TRY TO CONTINUE TO ANSWER THEM AS WE CAN ON THE SHAREPOINT SITE.

WITH THAT DOCTOR MAY IS YOURS TO CLOSE OUT.

>> WELL, I WANT TO THANK ALL OF YOU, PANEL, GREAT DISCUSSION AROUND A VERY IMPORTANT TOPIC.

THANK YOU FOR NOT ONLY WHAT YOU SHARED TODAY BUT FOR THE WORK YOU DO EVERY DAY FOR OUR STUDENTS, FOR OUR COMMUNITIES AND TO HELP ENSURE THAT OUR EMPLOYERS HAVE THE DIVERSIFIED WORKFORCE THAT WE NEED IN ORDER TO HAVE A GREAT

[01:05:01]

COMMUNITY THAT IS A TRULY SUCCESSFUL AT EVERY LEVEL.

I ENCOURAGE FOLKS TO KEEP SENDING IN QUESTIONS AT TOWN HALL.

D CCD.COM.

I THINK ALL OF YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO EVERY DAY AND THANK YOU FOR JOINING US.

HAVE A GREAT DAY, GOOD TO SEE YOU.
